Com o objetivo de prover informações precisas, coesas e em tempo real aos gestores da Diretoria da Usina Presidente Vargas (UPV) para a tomada de decisões, foi criado o projeto para Gestão de Indicadores de Desempenho em Tempo Real com o foco no processo produtivo e performance das áreas de Laminação (a quente e a frio), Zincagem e Folhas Metálicas. O projeto foi desenvolvido em fases, onde cada fase contemplava um determinado número de equipamentos, áreas e plantas, com visualização em drill down. Utilizando os conceitos de Data Visualization e Operational Intelligence, foi possível integrar e centralizar as informações de diversas fontes de dados, tais como, PIMS, MES, LIMS, ERP, Supervisórios, PROCOM's e entradas manuais. Padronizar as informações de controle do processo produtivo entre os gestores facilita a identificação de problemas e suas causas, e permite analisar simultaneamente várias áreas e plantas. Exibir em tempo real perdas operacionais em decorrência de desvios de processo, torna o processo de tomada de decisão mais rápido e assertivo, contribuindo para a melhoria da performance dos equipamentos, redução de riscos de falhas, e além disso aumenta a vida útil dos equipamentos e otimiza a monitoração dos processos.

This Bureau of Mines report presents results of an underground evaluation to determine the respirable dust and gas control effectiveness of a combined (push-pull) face ventilation system for coal mines. The system utilizes both blowing and exhaust curtain, continuous miners equipped with radio remote control, and flight conveyors. Bureau of Mines tests showed a 97% reduction in respirable dust concentrations from the usual cab position on the continuous miner to the remote control operator's position. This allowed the remote control operator to be well within, and the usual cab position to exceed, Federal respirable dust standards. Tests utilizing a safe tracer gas, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), to determine the face ventilation effectiveness of the combined blowing and exhaust system showed that the system also has excellent methane dispersion capability. Where wide entries permit, this combined face ventilation system and use of remote control can be a very effective method for dust and gas control.

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Red Hook Houses was subjected to damage during Superstorm Sandy. As a result, the NYCHA has an ongoing project known as Restoration Associated with Sandy Recovery Program to improve the resistance against future storms. The specific project included 28 residential buildings and several service buildings within the Red Hook Development. The subsurface conditions within the eastern portion of the site included existing fill material underlain by varying stratums of very loose, loose and medium dense silty sands followed by very soft to medium stiff clay or dense silty sands. The western portion of the site included existing fill material, very loose to medium dense silty sands and organic clayey silts underlain by very soft to medium stiff sandy silts. Based on the geotechnical report, a conventional driven steel pile system was specified containing two pile depths. As part of the project bidding, an alternative pile type was recommended and analyzed to provide quicker installation, reduce vibrations, reduce noise, and provide relatively large cost savings. Due to relatively high lateral loading, an innovative double steel casing drilled displacement piles was proposed as the alternative pile option. Field testing proved the piles capable of the required project capacities and the use of drilled displacement piles as the best alternative for the project and accepted by the NYCHA.

The world's largest fluidized bed steam generator located at Rivesville, West Virginia is currently undergoing initial operation. This unit is designed to generate 3708 kg/s (300,000 Ib/hr) equivalent to 30 MWe of superheated steam while firing coal in a fluidized bed of limestone. Coal was first fired in this unit in December, 1976 and start up operation is progressing.

The principal thrust of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Coal Preparation R&D Program is to develop technology to reduce the ash and sulfur contents of United States coals to levels such that the resultant product can be formulated into a high quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. Specifically, the objective is to develop and refine cost-effective physical and chemical beneficiation processes to extract 85-95 percent of the total sulfur and ash. The Coal Preparation program is implemented by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and is conducted both in-house and by a cross section of industrial organizations, universities, and national laboratories. Research is subdivided into three areas -coal characterization, beneficiation, and ancillary unit operations. This paper will provide a brief overview of many of the research projects being carried out in these areas in fiscal year 1984.

Kaolin clay is used as a filler and pigment in various applications such as paper, paint, rubber, plastics, adhesives, ink and ceramics etc. Major mineral content in crude kaolin clay is kaolinite along with some accessory minerals as quartz, hematite, mica, feldspar, anatase, rutile, illemnite etc. The Fe and Ti bearing minerals play very important role in determining quality of the kaolin, as these minerals impart yellow, pink or darker color to the white kaolin. Conventional beneficiation methods used in kaolin processing are de-gritting, classification and sodium dithionite bleaching, which improves the optical properties of kaolin, wherein reduction of color imparting constituents such as Fe2O3 and TiO2 is marginal. In the present study, these coloring impurities are separated using selective adsorption of water-soluble polymers. Degritted kaolin samples after passing through 45 micron sieve is used in the study for selective flocculation by polyacrylamide based polymers. The effect of pH, zeta potential, and polymer dose on the reduction of impurities is studied. Analytical tools such as XRF, XRD, SEM, and TEM techniques are utilized and results are discussed in detail.

Over the years the coal industry in Alabama has generated about 150 million tons of fine waste coal, increasing at a rate of 2 million tons/year, during mining and cleaning operations. Reclamation of the fine-size wastes containing 20-60% by weight clean coal provides, free of charge, mined and crushed feedstocks for coal recovery and eliminates a major source of acid water pollution. Tests were made on the impounded wastes and current plant discharges to recover the coal fraction by sizing, gravity and flotation techniques. Gravity separation of the plus 100 mesh material produced commercial grade coal averaging 8.2% ash, 0.8% sulfur and 13,350 Btu/lb. However, the coal recovery was relatively low at 50-65%. Froth flotation using mechanical and froth column methods gave similar coal products at much higher coal recovery of 87-93%. The coal produced analyzed 10% ash and 1.1% sulfur.

This study relates to the spongillite deposits from the region of Jopo Pinheiro, in the north-west of the State of Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. The deposits occur in shallow ponds (with a maximum depth of 3.5 m) on a karstic planation surface developed on rocks of the Spo Francisco Neoproterozoic Supergroup. Cenozoic detritic covers are associated with this surface. The field study of spongillite deposits from the Preguita and Avipo deposits revealed sedimentological and pedological similarities between the different deposits. They have a lenticular shape and contain different layers of sedimentary spicules intercalated with layers of quartz sand and clay minerals. Representative samples from the different layers investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential and gravimetric thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy showed a range from three to 80 per cent of amorphous silica (opal) corresponding mostly to the sponge spicules in the sediments. Optical microscopic investigation determined that the spicules predominantly belong to the sponge Metania spinata. This species is represented by smooth megascleres (alpha type), prickly megascleres (beta type) measuring 240 to 450 mm in length, as well as the spiny microscleres; whereby the smooth megascleres are larger and thinner. The morphological variation of the spicules as well as the presence of more fragmented spicules towards the base of the deposits, portray a variation in texture and in the state of their preservation along the profile, suggesting environmental variations at the time of their formation and deposition.

This paper describes results obtained on aluminum-beryllium alloys and aluminum-beryllium-copper alloys in the preparation of which aluminum of 99.95 per cent. purity was used. The constitution and structure of the high purity binary alloys are given. The aluminum-beryllium eutectic occurs at 0.87 per cent. beryllium and 645° C. The solid solubility of beryllium in aluminum at 631° C. is 0.05 per cent, beryllium, and at room temperature is less than 0.013 per cent. beryllium. The densities of the alloys are substantially the same as the values calculated on the assumption that the densities of the elements are not changed by alloying. All of the alloys age-harden at room temperature after a solution heat treatment, and the chill cast aluminum-beryllium-copper alloys age-harden at room temperature without a prior solution heat treatment. Hardness and tensile properties are given. Salt spray corrosion tests on sheet specimens are described. It is shown that beryllium docs not lower the corrosion resistance of aluminum to salt spray provided the alloy has received a solution heat treatment. Commercial Possibilities of Beryllium Alloys Beryllium has certain properties such as low density, high hardness, good corrosion resistance, low thermal expansion and fairly good electrical conductivity, which would indicate that it is worthy of consideration as an ingredient of light alloys. It was not until recently, however, that beryllium could be produced with sufficient ease to encourage research along this line. The production of beryllium by electrolysis from a fluoride bath has now developed to the stage where it could be used commercially if there were sufficient demand for the element. Claims made in certain newspapers and technical articles in regard to thc strength and corrosion resistance of thc aluminum-beryllium alloys are not justified by experimental results. Moreover, beryllium is an expensive metal ($200 a pound at the time this work was done) and, on account of the nature of its ore and the consequent difficulty of its extraction, it will in all probability continue to be a relatively expensive metal, although the cost would undoubtedly be a great deal less than $200 a

The Mount Carlton project in Queensland's North East sits on a high-sulphidation epithermal style deposit rich in gold, copper and silver. Mt Carlton is an open pit mining operation with ore processed using a primary crusher, single stage SAG mill and flotation to produce a concentrate for sale. Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) was involved in the original design of the comminution circuit and the project was commissioned in late 2012, with first concentrate shipped in March 2013. When Evolution sought to optimise the project in 2015, OMC was invited to assist by undertaking a circuit review to identify opportunities for the optimisation. During 2016, the Mt Carlton site team implemented the optimisation strategies developed in conjunction with OMC. These included reconfiguring the SAG mill discharge arrangement, reducing the average ball diameter and allowing the mill to operate at higher speed and under more autogenous conditions. Cyclone operation was changed to constant pressure and the vortex finder size was decreased. The combined strategies improved energy efficiency and allowed higher SAG mill power utilisation. The additional power has been used to increase throughput by 2.4 per cent while achieving a 27µm reduction in product size (P80) to gain downstream recovery improvements. The reduction in grind size has been achieved with only 6.8 per cent increase in specific energy consumption because of a 6.5 per cent increase in grinding efficiency. The circuit product size is also notably more consistent due to the improvements made to the cyclones, providing benefit to the downstream flotation circuit. A significant decrease in ball consumption was also gained, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in operating cost.This paper will discuss the circuit design, start up and will detail the changes made during the optimisation and why these were successful.CITATION:Putland, B, Lovatt, I, Cervillin, A and Schwann, D, 2018. THE large pyrites ore-bodies, the underground mining of which is to be described, are situated at Rio Tinto in the Province of Huelva in Southern Spain. The situation of the different ore-bodies with relation to one another is shown in Figure 1. It will be seen on the plan that the strike of the ore-bodies is approximately east and west. The geology of the district has been very fully described by Dr. D. Williams (1), so that for the purposes of this paper it will be sufficient to give briefly the salient features o each of the two larger ore-bodies which are being mined by underground methods at the present time. (a) San Dionisio.-This ore-body is the largest single deposit in Rio Tinto, having on its upper levels a length of 3,500 ft. On the upper levels the average width is approximately 200ft. but in places on the lower levels there is a width of 900ft. of un broken pyrites. Diamond-drill holes, without running out of ore, show the ore-body to persist to a depth of at least 1,600 ft. The ore-body in the upper part lies between slate and porphyry walls, but in depth is enclosed in porphyry walls. (b) South Lode.-Faulting is considered to be responsible for the break in the solid ore between South Lode and San Dionisio. On the upper levels, the South Lode ore-body has an unbroken length of 4,000 ft. The massive pyrites has a maximum width of 300ft. and an average of about 100 ft. Ore has been proved to a depth of 1,000 ft., at which depth the ore-body is much reduced both in length and breadth. This ore-body, to the depth at which it has been proved, lies entirely between slate and porphyry walls. The South Lode and the San Dionisio ore-bodies are mined both by open-cast and by underground methods. There is evidence that these mines have been exploited intermittently during the last 3,000 years; but, as is to be expected, no records are available of the tonnage mined prior to the time of purchase by the present company.

The Geomechanics Classification (Bieniawski, 1979) was modified for entry and roof support design in underground room-and-pillar coal mines. Adjustment multipliers were introduced to incorporate the influence of strata weatherability, high horizontal stresses, and the roof support reinforcement factor into the existing classification system. Sixty-two case histories of both standing and fallen mine roof were collected from two mines in the northern Appalachian coalfield. Twenty-seven engineering and geologic parameters were recorded for each case. A partial correlation analysis was carried out on the cases to establish which parameters have a significant impact upon the supported stand-up time of coal mine roof. Survival analysis, a statistical technique used in medical research to assess the effect of a drug or treatment on a patient's life expectancy, was conducted together with stepwise multiple regression to derive values for the adjustment multipliers. A practical example is included to illustrate the application of the modified Geomechanics Classification to underground coal mine design.

The current and future requirements for an underground mine information management system are being met with a flexible, value-engineered approach to mine information/communication infrastructures. El-Equip has developed and delivered to over fifty mines around the world an integrated, high capacity, radio-based leaky feeder communication system called MultiCOM. To meet the requirements of recently developed advanced information management technologies, such as production and ventilation management, the system has evolved to support simultaneous mobile and fixed information delivery services over an integrated single cable system. The following paper will review how MultiCOM is enabling information/communications technology to cost-effectively implement mine monitoring and control applications. Applications described in this paper include mobile vehicle production tracking, vehicle location, ventilation system monitoring and control with integrated ventilation system simulation. The techniques described are leading the world in terms of flexible and value-engineered applications of technology in the underground mine.

A high seam geologic condition exists at Jim Walter Resources No.4 mine which requires immediate rib support after a continuous miner cuts a place, High seam mining heights are typically 2.4 to 2.6 m (8 to 9 it) and a thick rock layer is present in the upper portion of the coal rib side. The 610 m (2000 ft) mining depth at No. 4 mine induces horizontal rib line movement after excavating an entry. Horizontal rib movement greater than 30.5 cm (12 in) have been noted. When lateral movement occurs in the high seam areas, the thick rock layer, and the coal above the rock layer, become fractured and tend to roll into the entry. If not adequately supported, large rib rolls develop in the place being bolted as well as in previously mined areas which endanger men and equipment. To control this situation rib support must be installed in the roof bolting operation as the bolting crew works towards the face. A rib control system has been developed for this high seam mining condition utilizing a mechanical anchor bolt placed at an angle in the rib and installed with a modified Fletcher DDFI- 15 bolting machine. Over 120 km (75 mi) of entry have been supported with angle rib bolts. These angle bolts constitute 43 to 60% of the total roof and rib bolt footage in the high seam port- ions of No.4 mine. The angle rib bolting system has proven safer, more effective, and more efficient than the earlier support method employing bolts installed horizontally into the rib. No rib roll accidents have occurred since the angle drill bolting machines were placed in service in 1981. By securing the broken rib material with an angle bolt anchored above the coal pillar, a more effective means of rib control is achieved. Angle rib bolting does not interfere with continuous miner productivity. In addition, bolting crews are now reduced from three to two people and the total drilling supply costs are approximately 60% the previous cost, when compared to the previous support method using horizontal rib bolts.

The objective of this paper is to review advances in the art of borehole (slurry) mining made by the Bureau of Mines. The introduction gives historical and general background information on borehole mining. The borehole mining concept is defined and justified in terms of economics, health and safety, the environment, and resource conservation. This is followed by a description of the design of a prototype borehole mining tool (BMT) developed by the Bureau of Mines. Included are design drawings and performance specifications. The next section describes the application of the BMT in the extraction of metallurgical coal from steeply pitching seams near Wilkeson, Wash., during 1975-76. The field test showed that the BMT produced coal at the rate of 8 tons per hour (tph) (7,272 kg/hr) from a depth of 88 feet (26.8 m) and was effective in producing coal as far as 15 feet (4.6 m) from the center of the borehole. The data are used as a basis for an economic analysis of borehole coal mining and for the suggestions for the design of a second-generation borehole coal mining tool. The following section describes Bureau efforts in applying borehole mining to the extraction of uraniferous sandstone at Rocky Mountain Energy Corp.'s Nine-Mile Lake site, Natrona County, Wyo. BMT design changes appropriate to uranium mining are described along with production, reliability, and reclamation data taken during 1977-73. The field test revealed that the BMT produced 900 tons (81.8x105 g) of uraniferous sand at an average race of 8 tph (7,272 kg/hr) from a depth of 75 (22.8 m) to 90 (27.4 m) feet and created a cavity 25 feet (7.6 m) in radius. These data are used as the basis for an economic analysis of borehole mining of shallow uraniferous sandstones. Reclamation data included will be the results of backfilling experiments conducted at Nine-Mile Lake during 1978. The most significant of these data were that backfill was emplaced at the rate of 16 tph (14.5x103 kg/hr) and that 90 percent of the material extracted from a cavity can be backfilled.

In the course of the development of the Red Coulee field, northwest of Coutts, Alberta, a considerable amount of information has been gathered by the Department of the Interior regarding the chemical character of waters encountered in the drilling of wells in this area. The writer, in this paper, has undertaken to assemble the available material with the idea of deducing what relations, if any, may exist between the different waters from the same well, and also how these compare with waters encountered in similar horizons in other wells. From no other district, with which the Department of the Interior has had to do, have there been received so many samples of water, and yet not all the waters logged in the drilling reports were sent in for analysis. The information, therefore, herein contained is not as complete as the writer would have desired, but sufficient evidence has been accumulated to indicate some very definite tendencies in the chemical nature of the waters of this field. The drilling of Red Coulee wells has been carried out exclusively by percussive tools. These permit 'dry' drilling, and, consequently, water-sands are recognized when encountered. Had rotary tools been used, information regarding water-sands would have been very meagre, if not entirely lacking, since, in the mudding-off process, water-sands would have been overlooked, with the result that, should water break through into a completed well, its source would not be known and remedial efforts would be greatly handicapped, if not entirely defeated.

A new center for mining and metallurgical research is developing at Sterling Forest, N. Y., under the auspices of Union Carbide Corp. Here is to be located the Union Carbide Nuclear and Ore Research Laboratories. In truth, history has repeated itself; the Sterling Forest area in the days of the Revolutionary War, and for many years thereafter, was the mining and metallurgical center of the US. For in these Ramapo hills along the New York-New Jersey border, iron ore was mined, pig lion was cast, and the weapons of war and the plowshares of peace were forged. Before embarking on an historical pilgrimage to yesteryear-a brief description of Sterling Forest. Located in Orange County, N. Y., near Tuxedo, immediately north of the New York-New Jersey State line, and just west of the Erie Railroad and the New York State Thruway, Sterling Forest is approximately 35 mi from New York City. Title was acquired in 1956 from the Harriman family by City Investing Co. Its President, Robert W. Dowling, has established himself as a city planner, having conceived such projects as Pittsburgh's Gateway Center and Philadelphia's Penn Center. A unique, self-contained community -is planned that will contain light industry and centers for research and engineering. Colonies of homes will be interspersed throughout the 20,000 acres of forest land, lakes, and rolling hills. Culture will not be neglected, for Sterling Forest will be the new home for the annual Empire State Music Festival The Sterling Forest Gardens, 125 acres of landscaped woodland and streams, will become the "world's largest permanent floral showplace" The Sterling Forest International Research Building was opened earlier this year, and designed to provide all facilities needed by small growth research companies. The first major company to acquire land to construct research buildings at Sterling Forest is Union Carbide. 1763 ... Discovery of iron ore In turning back the pages of history, a fascinating story can be told of special interest to the metallurgist, the mining engineer, and perhaps even the sociologist. For, where new communities are planned today, older communities had been born, matured, and died. In these hills had lived the. iron miners, the blacksmiths, the lumbermen, the masons, and the teamsters that had given America its start in heavy industry. This was the area where the forests were crisscrossed with many wood roads that brought logs to the charcoal pits, and iron ore to the furnaces. Men make history. Our story brings forth many names of men known as ironmasters, or as industrial leaders-Hasenclever, Faesch, Erskine, Townsend, Ryerson, Parrott, Cooper, Hewitt, Jay Cooke, and Harriman. The name Sterling is derived from a Scotch Lord, the Fifth Earl of Stirling (in its earlier spelling). Lord Stirling was one of seven Englishmen granted a patent of land in the Ramapo hills by Queen Anne in 1707, known as the Cheesecock Patent. He sent an agent, Cornelius Board, to America in 1730, with the express purpose of looking for copper deposits. While he found no copper in his travels up and down the Ramapo Valley, he did find iron ore in two localities: first, in the vicinity of what is now Ringwood, N. J.; second, five miles to the north. There he constructed a forge and furnace at the edge of a lake in 1736, naming the land Stirling Property, after his patron. In 1740, the Ogden family in Newark bought land from Board at Ringwood and began smelting of iron in 1741. The Ringwood story Soon, a genius in the person of Peter Hasenclever appeared on the scene. He was attracted by an advertisement in the New York Mercury for March 5, 1764, in which David Ogden of Newark offered

CERRO'S power system consists of three main hydroelectric plants and one steam-electric plant. These are located on the eastern slope of the main Andes range at altitudes between 12,000 and 13,000 ft. The hydroelectric group utilizes the watershed which extends for about 150 kilometers south from Cerro de Pasco, divided into two catchment areas which lie adjacent. The northern area serve,, the medium-head plant of Mal¬paso. while the southern area provides for the high-head plants at Pachachaca and Oroya. The rainfall, as registered at the rain gauging stations of the three hydroelectric plants, averages 33 in. per year; all these stations are subject to the same hydrological conditions, and the bulk of precipitation occurs between October and March. Rainfall during the dry season, April till September, has no appreciable effect on the total annual runoff. Table 1 shows the storage capacities of the main reservoirs of the hydroelectric group. Central to any business is its Asset Management Plan which encapsulates the business context and key organisational objectives such as profitability, safety and environmental standards. Life Cycle Planning (LCP) is a key component of an overall Asset Management Plan. A comprehensive approach to Life Cycle Planning forecasts the financial expenditure required to support the performance of the asset over the business life. It incorporates capital, maintenance and operational expenditure along with an estimation of economic life. Within its body the LCP provides the detail of the maintenance plan and method of its execution. Once optimised the LCP becomes the overarching plan executed through the application of several elements of the Asset Management Plan to ensure the return on investment from the assets is optimal. Each of the elements of the LCP is bound by a set of loops that provide information based on the analysis of outcomes. These loops drive the continuous improvement of performance and cost over the life of the asset. In this way we ensure that the LCP is a dynamic plan responsive to the changing business environment. The paper being presented today will describe the process undertaken and the outcomes derived when this approach was applied to a $600 M+ coal handling and preparation plant in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin. It will also delve into the difficulties encountered from both technical and cultural aspects; the latter proving to be the most difficult to manage. It will describe the hurdles and barriers that hampered progress including the human influences and the natural desire to revert to what has been done in the past when things became a bit difficult. In the end the results are there to show that the upfront expenditure and investment in time was time and money well spent and the outcome has the operation well placed to manage the assets in a manner designed to deliver the optimal business outcome.

"The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County is planning to construct a new, approximately 7-mile-long (11.3 km) effluent outfall tunnel to be excavated by TBM and lined with precast concrete segments. Anticipated net operating pressures within the tunnel are expected to approach 3 bar. To counteract joint opening and exfiltration leakage, an approach has been investigated to post-tension the precast concrete tunnel lining with steel tendons. The tunnel alignment crosses several seismically active fault zones, at which installation of steel pipe is proposed as a secondary inner lining to mitigate potential offset displacements. This paper discusses the tunnel lining design approach and methods used to address these unique challenges.INTRODUCTION The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Sanitation Districts) is planning to construct a new 18-foot-diameter (5.5 m), approximately 7-mile-long (11.3 km) tunnel from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP), located in the City of Carson, to the existing White Point outfall manifold structure at Royal Palms State Beach (RPSB) (Figure 1). The project is part of the Sanitation Districts’ Clearwater Program, which will improve overall system reliability through the repair and replacement of the existing aging infrastructure. The existing system includes two 6-mile-long (9.7 km) tunnels, 8- and 12-feet in diameter (2.4 and 3.7 m), and four ocean outfall pipes with a maximum capacity of approximately 675 million gal/day (MGD) (2.6 billion L/day). Addition of the new parallel tunnel will increase overall capacity to accommodate peak wet weather wastewater flows of up to 1,262 MGD (4.8 billion L/day) and will allow inspection and repair of the existing tunnels. The new outfall tunnel will be excavated using a pressurized face tunnel boring machine (TBM). Shafts at the north (JWPCP Shaft) and south (RPSB Shaft) ends of the proposed alignment will connect the tunnel to the existing wastewater treatment plant and existing ocean outfalls manifold and during construction act as launch and receiving shafts for the TBM. The tunnel will be excavated from north to south as a single heading."
