The evaluation of the tribological behavior of thermochemically treated surfaces, such as carburising and nitriding, is of uppermost importance for the productive chain of tools, molds and matrices. However, the use of tribological tests for these surfaces should be well selected to avoid erroneous evaluations, in particular considering the effect of the substrate at different levels. In this context, the linear scratch test may be well suited to distinguish the roles of the surface and the substrate. For that purpose, this paper presents a review on the use of this type of test for tribological evaluation in terms of the performance of thermochemically treated surfaces. The approach used is multiscale, considering what types of results are obtained from each load range used and the applications for each one of them.

The thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity, and Seebeck coefficient for nine compounds, based on the formula for enargite Cu3AsS3, were measured in a search for efficient materials to be used in thermoelectric generators or refrigerators. Results indicate that one of these compounds, Cu3SbSe4, has thermoelectric properties approaching those of bismuth telluride. An investigation of the effect of adding small quantities of tellurium to Cu3SbSe4 and Cu3SbS4 in order to improve their properties also was made. A figure of merit of 2.1 x 10-4 °C-1 was obtained for Cu3SbSe4 + 0.1 percent tellurium.

There are various types of natural zeolite deposits in Turkey. Naturally occurring zeolites are excluded from many important commercial applications where uniformity and purity are essential. In this paper, the beneficiation of natural zeolite, taken from western part of Turkey, was investigated. According to X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and mineralogical studies carried out on the representative ore sample, the natural zeolite was found to be in the forms of clinoptilolite and heulandite. Clinoptilolite forms as a devitrification product of volcanic glass in tuffs. Quartz, clay minerals, orthoclase, plagioclase, biotite, seruzite-muskovite and epidote were observed as impurities. Several types of mineral processing methods were performed in order to remove impurities from the natural zeolite sample to produce high purity zeolite. Gravity separation methods such as shaking table and superpanner were carried out for separating heavy minerals, while high intensity dry magnetic separation was used for discarding magnetic minerals.

New Mexico produced 31,913,816 bbl. of oil in 1942, the lowest annual production since 1936, and dropped one place to rank eighth among oil-producing states. This production decreased 7,838,052 bbl., or 19.71 per cent, from the 1941 figure is the result of transportation difficulties caused by the dislocation of tanker sailings to east coast ports. The average per-well allowable in New Mexico on Jan. I, 1942, was 43 bbl. and at the end of the year was 38 bbl. Allocations as set by the New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission followed the recommendations of the Petroleum Administrator for War. After setting the daily outlet, however, the average daily pipe-line runs were 87,545 bbl.—11.06 per cent short of these allocations. Production for Lea County was 26,812,949 bbl., Eddy County 4,624,578 bbl., northwestern New Mexico 473,609 bbl., Chaves County 2,680 barrels. Drilling activity for New Mexico in 1942 was approximately 84 per cent of that in 1941 with 339 completions. Of these completions 254 were oil wells, II gas wells, and 74 dry holes. Proven fields accounted for 55 of the dry holes and 19 were wildcats. Three new oil fields and one new gas field were discovered as the result of wildcat drilling. Extensions were made to one oil field and one gas field. By the close of the year, the New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission had designated 59 areas as proven for oil and/or gas. Southeastern New Mexico Lea County Monument was again the largest producing field in the state, with 5,729,336 bbl.; Eunice was next, with 5,217,965; Vacuum produced 3,295,624 and Hobbs 2,973,488. The Hobbs field has the largest accumulated production, which at the close of 1942 totaled 100,381,417 bbl. The 100-million-barrel mark for Hobbs focused attention on the fact that this is the first field in the state to attain this figure, and also that, as Hobbs has been under continuous proration since July 1930, or approximately the entire life of the field, this 100-million-barrel recovery was obtained with 86 per cent of the wells in the pool still flowing and having a drop in bottom-hole pressure of only 3.5 Ib. per million barrels recovered. Hobbs stands out as perhaps the best regulated major oil field in the world. Two new oil fields were discovered in Lca County, the most inlportant being the area designated as East Lusk, consisting of the south 4 tiers of Sections in T. 19 S., R. 32 E. The discovery well was drilled in the SW. SW. 1/4 of sec. 21, T. 19 S., R. 32 E., by Culbertson and Irwin, Inc., and others. It was completed at a total depth of 2751 ft. in the Seven Rivers formation of Permian age. The initial potential of the well was 237 bbl. per day on pump. A nutating grinding mill, exemplified by the commercial HICOM mill, achieves efficient particle size reduction through the accelerated motion of the material charge within the nutating chamber. This design, characterised by high particle velocities and rapid charge circulation, offers a compact solution compared to tumbling mills. There have been concerns regarding the mechanical reliability of kinetic joints for certain specialised mining applications. Recognising the need to model internal forces in such systems, this study focuses on the uncoupled simulation using multibody dynamics and the discrete element method. The investigation employed a small-scale experimental test mill, referred to as the NuMILL, featuring a cylindrical chamber (140 mm internal diameter, 245 mm height, 6° nutation angle). Instrumented with an array of sensors, the NuMILL provided internal load data for validating the simulations. Experiments were conducted with an empty chamber or filled with charge material. Charge materials included coarse sand or steel pellets with a charge-to-chamber mass ratio of 0.25. The mill speed ranged between 100 to 700 RPM. Multibody dynamics modelled resultant inertial and frictional loads within 5%, while the discrete element method simulated the internal material contact loads with accuracies ranging from 1% to 19%. The combined simulation approach predicted the resultant forces in the critical kinetic joint within a 20% margin. Representing the charge using rigid lumped mass elements was also studied. The presented simulation techniques, validated against experimental data, offer a robust foundation for analysing larger systems, including the industrial-scale HICOM.

Devido à grande aplicação de polímeros no nosso dia a dia sob condições de trabalho reais, ou seja, sob a influência de intempéries, surgiu a necessidade de estudos visando a avaliação de resistências estruturais e mecânicas desses polímeros. O envelhecimento é um processo que envolve mecanismos simultâneos que influenciam diretamente suas propriedades mecânicas, degradando os materiais. Com esse intuito, foi avaliado o envelhecimento por análise de espectroscopia no infravermelho por transformada de Fourier (FTIR) do PEMD de controle (tempo 0) e das amostras ensaiadas sob raios UV por 300, 600 e 900 horas. Os resultados obtidos mostraram o aparecimento e desaparecimento de bandas nos espectros de FTIR, que, relacionados aos resultados de emissão acústica (EA), indicaram a ocorrência de cisão de cadeias, ramificações e reticulações.

"The Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain deposits are located near Princeton in southern British Columbia. They are owned by Newmont Mining Corporation's wholly owned subsidiary, Similkameen Mining Company Ltd. The property includes the Copper Mountain mine, a former producer. Ore reserves recoverable by open-pit mining are estimated to be 76 million tons containing 0.53% copper. Production commenced during 1972 at a rate in excess of designed capacity (15,000 tpd). All of the known major copper deposits in this area lie in a 14,000- by 3,500-foot belt of Triassic volcanics (Nicola Group) that is situated between a well-defined syenitemonzonite- diorite stock on the south and a variable intrusive complex on the north. The Nicola rocks consist of andesitic tuffs and agglomerates with lesser amounts of flows and some lensy siltstone layers. The orebodies are essentially disseminated sulphide deposits, although fracture-fillings are also important in many areas. Total sulphide content is usually less than 5%. At lngerbelle, and at Pit 2 and most of Pit 1 at Copper Mountain, the sulphides are chalcopyrite-pyrite. In part of Pit 1 and most of the former underground mine they are chalcopyrite-bornite. At lngerbelle the predominant alteration associated with mineralization is a pale greenish-gray bleaching of the dark andesitic rocks. This has been identified as albitization, with lesser amounts of epidote, chlorite, biotite, scapolite and calcite. This bleaching is plentiful at Pit 2, but K-feldspathization is also evident here. These orebodies can better be classified with pyrometasomatic deposits than with typical porphyry coppers. Their relationship to intrusives, the probably extensive metasomatic replacements, the evidence of pneumatolytic activity, the formation and redistribution of magnetite, and the irregular distribution of mineralization are all characteristic of this class. Deep-seated faults probably acted as channelways for mineralization; fracturing, faulting and rock contacts influenced ore localization in detail."

Two microtunnel access shafts were constructed using the Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) method in the San Joaquin Delta region of California, east of San Francisco. Unlike conventional slurry walls and diaphragm walls that utilize concrete, soil mixing relies on blending the soils in situ with a cement slurry to create a soil-cement wall. Cutter Soil Mixing technology utilizes two sets of vertically mounted cutting wheels rotating about a horizontal axis to produce rectangular panels of treated soil. Overlapping of the soil mixed panels enabled the construction of two circular shafts. CSM panels were constructed to a depth of 29 m (95 ft) for the microtunnel jacking shaft and to a depth of 19 m (63 ft) for the microtunnel receiving shaft. The site presented several challenges, including the high depth of treatment, the variable nature of the alluvial soils, and the high water table. This paper describes the CSM technique and presents the design, construction, quality control measures and advantages of using this method for this project.

"We analyzed two copper and lead flotation concentrates from the LaRonde mill using MLA technology (Mineral Liberation Analyzer) to identify the contaminants and to quantify their size and liberation. The MLA mineral quantification was compared with traditional mineralogical techniques (Scanning Electron Microscopy, Optical Microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction and Chemistry). The accuracy of MLA data was then quantify in application to metallurgical decision (mineral identification, mineral quantification, particle sizing and liberation quantification). We prepared five well-known materials from pure minerals and analysed them by MLA. MLA concentrates analyses showed the lead concentrate is mainly contaminated by pyrite and sphalerite. These minerals are liberated above 70 % and present a floatable size around 15 to 35 µm. Surface activation by dissolved lead from galena is therefore assumed for these contaminants. The analyses of the known samples show that mineral quantification and size distribution given by the MLA are consistent with the chemical analyses and the laser particle sizer. The liberation measurement is affected by the stereological effect. Modelling quantifies the overestimation of the particle liberation. Based on the modelling, the stereological shift on liberation should not impact metallurgical conclusions on the concentrate contaminations.INTRODUCTIONTo face the diversity of mineral processing challenges, the process mineralogy includes phase quantification, measurement of mineral size, liberation by exposure and by grade, association, surface contact proportion and texture. In the last decades, two SEM commercial tools emerged: MLA and QEMSCAN R. Both are based on specific combinations of backscattered electrons and X-ray images as well as image analysis routines developed at CANMET (Petruk & Pinard, 1976, Petruk, 1989), CSIRO (Frost, O'Hara, Suddaby, Grant, Reid, Wilson & Zuiderwyk, 1977, Reid, Gottlieb, MacDonald, & Miller, 1984) and JKMRC (Hall, 1977, Gu & Sugden, 1995). Recently, TIMA (TESCAN) and Mineralogic MiningR (ZEISS) supplied automated mineralogy for mining industry (Bouzahzah, Benzaazoua, Graham & Cropp, 2015, Gottlieb & Dosbaba, 2015a). In parallel, home-made routine were developped to resolve mineralogy challenges in mineral process but also in geometallurgy and mining environment (Kahn, Mano, & Tassinari, 2002, Knight, Klassen & Hunt, 2002, Mermillod-Blondin, Benzaazoua, Kongolo, de Donato, Bussiere & Marion, 2011, Hunt & Bradshaw, 2015). SEM mineralogy become essential to operation by setting units on mine sites (MacDonald, Latti, Adair, Bradshaw, & Dunn, 2011, Goergen et al., 2013, Dobbe et al., 2014, Gottlieb & Dosbaba, 2015b)."

Hydrogen peroxide production was measured during the grinding of a complex sulfide ore, and its oxidizing effect on solid surfaces was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) with diffuse reflectance attachment measurement. In turn, an attempt was made to correlate the formation of hydrogen peroxide, surface oxidation and sphalerite flotation. Additionally, in order to predict and minimize detrimental production problems due to the recycling of process water in sulfide ore processing, the effects of major components of calcium and sulfate species present in recycled process water and the effect of temperature on sphalerite flotation were investigated through bench-scale flotation tests using complex sulfide ores. The significance of process water species in flotation was studied using tap water, process water and simulated water containing calcium and sulfate ions. Formation of hydrogen peroxide was revealed during the grinding of the complex sulfide ore, and its formation was counteracted by diethylenetriamine (DETA). The FTIR spectrum of the pulp solid fraction showed varying degrees of oxidized surface species, which are related to the concentration of H2O2 analyzed in pulp liquid. Bench-scale flotation using two different complex sulfide ores showed that sphalerite recovery is better in process water than in tap water. Flotation results also indicated a varied recovery of sphalerite at different temperatures in either tap water or process water.

Application of dynamic simulation for a base metal processing plant is discussed. The plant receives ore of variable quality from two pits and blending had to be applied to maximise recovery. The plant employs multiple stage crushing, screening, dense media separation, two-stage milling, flotation and further filtration. Stockpiles and bunkers are used in the plant to cater for breakdowns and operating delays, the latter being appropriately incorporated in the model. A detail dynamic simulation model was constructed from the rock face to the filtration plant to assist the plant design, notably with definition of the ore blending method, sizing storage capacity and in-plant conveyors. The plant model was broken down to capital equipment items and various feed types and mass balances were tested to ensure that the production target is met. The dynamic simulation tested the proposed blending method, identified bottlenecks, produced risk profiles for all strategic storage facilities and overall helped minimise the project risks and improve confidence in the plant design. Durante a fabricação do aço as grandes siderúrgicas possuem usinas térmicas integradas aos seus processos industriais. Uma operação bastante comum na indústria siderúrgica é a geração de vapor, normalmente utilizado para a produção de trabalho mecânico em turbinas (vapor superaquecido) ou em processos de aquecimento, nos quais se emprega o vapor saturado. Estes vapores de processos também podem ser utilizados na geração de energia elétrica. Para isto, foi importante assegurar a qualidade da água e do vapor de baixa pressão (VBP) enviado para Termelétrica. Foi com este intuito que a TKCSA se preocupou em padronizar o (VBP) gerado na Caldeira Auxiliar da área de Utilidades e Caldeiras da Aciaria. O desafio era transformar o (VBP) na mesma qualidade do vapor produzido nas caldeiras recuperadoras de calor (HRSG). O procedimento adotado foi á modificação no tratamento químico, a instalação de uma monitoração química contínua e eficiente para assegurar os parâmetros químicos dentro da especificação técnica recomendada pelo EPRI - Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. Com este tratamento foi controlada as dosagens químicas, a operação da caldeira e a geração dos efluentes líquidos para o tratamento químico ambiental. Contudo foi possível tornar um mecanismo dinâmico e econômico para a empresa viabilizando a utilização do vapor na termelétrica.

Recovering valuable metals from tailings not only provides a source of income but also helps conserve natural resources, thus reducing the environmental impact of mining activities. This study aimed to recover cobalt using tailings of the Küre flotation plant, which were determined to contain 0.17% Co. Flotation tests were conducted on samples taken from the tailings to investigate the effects of pH and pH conditioning time, as well as types and amounts of depressant, collector, and frother on the grade and recovery of Co in rougher flotation tests. Optimal flotation conditions were determined to be pH 6, a pH conditioning time of 7 min, and dosages of 50 g/t, 100 g/t, and 20 g/t of sodium hexametaphosphate, X-231, and DF250, respectively. According to the rougher flotation test results, a concentrate with a Co grade of 0.46% and a Co recovery of 84.15% was obtained. In the concentrate obtained using cleaner flotation tests, the Co grade increased to 0.49% and Co recovery increased to 90.56%. These results show that froth flotation, carried out with the appropriate reagents, is a successful method for recovering Co by enriching the flotation plant tailings.

Uma ferramenta de trefilação deve suportar as altas tensões a que fica submetida durante o processo sem apresentar deformações. Para isso, o projeto da fieira deve iniciar com a escolha correta do material de fabricação e um dimensionamento adequado. Tais fatores podem minimizar a ocorrência de falhas, tanto na fieira, quanto no produto trefilado, assim como diminuir as tensões e desgaste na ferramenta. Portanto, este estudo visa analisar as regiões de uma ferramenta de trefilação industrial que estão sujeitas as maiores amplitudes de tensões ao longo de um processo de trefilação. O método de elementos finitos foi utilizado para simular a trefilação de uma barra de aço utilizando uma ferramenta de carbeto de tungstênio. O perfil da fieira foi inserido no software e então analisado em diferentes etapas ao longo do processo de trefilação e após o seu término. Observou-se a ocorrência de tensões compressivas superiores a 600 MPa na região de trabalho e as maiores tensões trativas foram visualizadas na região de saída, com valores próximos a 200 MPa. A presença de tensões residuais não foi registrada na fieira, como esperado.

Starting in 1980, a committee of the National Research Council studied the question of why some underground coal mines are safer than others and what could be done to improve the ones with poorer performance. The results indicated that safety is improved by management commitment to safety, by cooperation between labor and management on safety matters, and by quality training of employees and managers. Younger mines have higher accident frequencies, but are less likely to be killed or permanently disabled by a lost-time accident. Methods for improving safety performance are proposed.

A new suspension electrolysis method has been developed, which enables without any gas or dust pollutants a direct anodic extraction of zinc from zinc sulfide concentrates, while simultaneously oxidizing sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur. The investigations were performed in a laboratory scale electrolytic cell with suspended zinc sulfide concentrate particles with or without graphite powder additions in dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte. By regulating the redox potential of the electrolysis system in combination with some additions, for example [Fe3+/Fe2+, MnO 4/MnO2, MnO 2/Mn2+ or MnO 4/Mn2+], the anodic dissolution reaction of zinc sulfide has been accomplished effectively without evolution of hydrogen sulfide. Under optimum conditions the anodic current efficiency of zinc dissolution ammounted up to 95 %, while sulfide sulfur was converted nearly completly to the elemental form. Purification by removal of sulfur and other impurities gives a zinc sulfate solution suitable for electrolysis to cathode zinc.

The North American-based mining engineer needs to understand the differences that exist between mechanical mining or boring machines built on this continent and those built in Europe. The differences Ere most clearly seen when machines for large-sized openings--about 15 feet high-are considered. This report will focus on the innovations of European origin. The rock-breaking tool, drag bit, or roller cone that is efficient for a particular project is related directly to the strength of the rock involved. This strength is generally stated in reference to the rock's unconfined compressivee strength in pounds per square inch (psi) although it is well recognized that a rock's shear strength is also important. Compressive strength has been adopted because it is simple to test for and provides a convenient comparison. Table 1 relates cutter type to compressive strength and indicates the general nature of the machine innovation devel¬oped in Europe.
