"The neutralization process of SO2 from coal burning plants is a well-defined technology using limestone to form CaSO4 according to the following reaction: CaCO3 + SO2(g) + 1/2O2(g) = CaSO4 This paper presents the results of a study carried out to validate the option of capturing SO2 using gases from a non-ferrous smelter; SO2 content was up to 12% using a three-stage fluidized bed reactor. The difference in SO2 content affects equilibrium conditions and kinetics, rendering a direct extrapolation of the high efficiency achieved for low SO2 content impossible. The R&D program consisted of a laboratory study using a semi-pilot operation of a one-stage fluidized bed reactor and the construction and operation of a three-step reactor prototype. Results show that the reaction proceeds according to the unreacted core model that imposes a compromise between CaCO3 conversion and SO2 capture. For high SO2 capture, the calcine from the reactor contained CaSO4 and CaO. A complete capture of SO2 from gases with 8 vol.% can be achieved with a mean reaction time of two hours at 800°C."

Lenders do not normally participate in any project upside. The economics of lending dictate that banks can only accommodate a low probability of loan default and consequently banks' principal focus in mineral ""valuation"" is ensuring an acceptably comfortable probability of debt repayment. A simple conceptual explanation of lenders' risk / return position is outlined.

"We studied the mechanism of structural and chemical transformations of columbite, tantalite, zircon and feldspar surface during the treatment by high – power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) using the methods of X - ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), analytical electron microscopy (SEM - EDX), Kelvin probe force microscopy and flotation experiments. According to XPS and SEM - EDX data, major changes in the atoms chemical state of investigated minerals surface are related with formation and modification of functional cover and changing in concentration (% at.) of hydroxyl groups on the mineral surface, leading to increase in the contrast of technological properties of the rare metals minerals. Research has identified the optimal parameters of HPEMP - treatment of rare - earth minerals Npuls ??104, Ttreatment ??100 sec. improving the selectivity of the flotation separation of columbite and zircon. The difference in mineral recovery into the froth (? e) before and after HPEMP - treatment was about 11 % and 24.5 %, respectively. No significant increase was observed in the flotation activity of feldspar. This study's findings demonstrate the effectiveness of HPEMP - treatment in inducing a controlled change in the structural and chemical properties of rare - earth minerals and improving the process efficiency for the processing of rougher tantalum - niobium gravity concentrates.INTRODUCTIONThe importance of improving the processing methods of tantalum-niobium ores and concentrates is explained by the mineralogical properties of rare - earth ores. These are properties such as the variable mineral, chemical, and grain size composition, complex morphometric properties, and the dissemination of ore mineral grains of micro - and nanometric size. Iron oxide and hydroxide films on the mineral surfaces neutralize the surface physicochemical and absorption properties of the minerals. Both in Russia and globally, nonconventional (non - mechanical) methods are being developed based on physicochemical, electrochemical, and pulsed energy impacts to improve the efficiency of disintegration and liberation processes of disseminated mineral complexes and to enhance the contrast of the structural, chemical, and technological (floatability) properties of refractory ores. This study is devoted to the investigation of the applicability of high – power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP – treatment) for the change in the structural and chemical properties of rare - earth minerals and improving of the flotation properties contrast."

The effect of sulfuric acid concentration on the extractions of arsenic and copper in the catalyzed batch leaching of an enargite concentrate was studied. The acid concentrations studied were 60, 45, 30 and 15 g/L. The experimental series yields maximum copper extractions of 96 to 98% in an interval of 81 - 185 h leaching time for 60 - 15 g/L initial sulfuric acid concentration; all the copper extractions plateaued after these values; the rates and plateaus of copper extraction are increased with higher acid concentrations. Arsenic extractions reached maximum values of 89% in 57 hours, 57% in 49 hours, 33% in 25 hours, and 25% in 112 hours respectively; these maximum values were followed by a steep decrease in arsenic concentration, which indicates a precipitation event occurs in the process. According to the literature and process conditions, the arsenic precipitates obtained are iron arsenates similar to scorodite. The stability of the residues was tested using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) from EPA; the residues for the four concentration levels passed the TCLP test, reporting arsenic leaching values below 1 mg/L.

The lorsion effusion method has been used to measure the vapor pressure of lead over pure lead and eight Pb-Sn alloys ranging from 9.1 to 87.9 at. pct Pb in the temperature range 950° to 1125°K. The resulting ?H°y 298 = 46,630 ± 200 cal per g-atow for pure lead is in excellent agreement with previous work. Deriued ?Gph values for the alloys were smoothed and correlated with previous heat of formation data to obtain entropies for the liquid alloys. values for the tin component were calculated by Gibbs-Duhem integmtion. Surfhce depletion of these liquid alloys was found to be absent, as shown by the fact that the measured pressure remained substantially constant with time in contrast with previous measurements on iron-rich solid Fe-Mn alloys. The activities and Gibbs (free) energies of the liquid Pb-Sn system are not well known although the heats of formation have been accurately determined by K1eppa.l Vapor pressure determinations of the activity of lead by Voronin and Evseev2 disagree with those of Predel.3 Elliott and chipman4 measured activities by the electromotive -force technique in the ternary Pb-Sn-Cd system. From the resulting values of the activity of cadmium, they were able to calculate the activities of lead and tin for the binary Pb-Sn system at the compositions xsn = 0.33 and 0.67. Atarashiya, Uta, Shimoji, and Niwa5 determined the activity of tin from Hz-H2O equilibrium measurements, but their results are subject to question due to uncertainty in the final state of their samples. To resolve these differences, measurements of the activity of lead were made using a torsion-effusion apparatus. Among other advantages, this apparatus rapidly detects errors caused by surface depletion, which tends to reduce the apparent vapor pressure of the more volatile component. If the measured torques remain nearly constant with time, only bulk depletion is occurring. This contrasts with the rapid decrease in torque found in solid Fe-Mn alloys at high temperatures and low manganese contents.6 EXPERIMENTAL 99.999+ pct Pb was obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. and 99.999 pct Sn from Vulcan Detinning Co. Eight Pb-Sn alloys were prepared by melting together weighed amounts of the pure metals in evacuated Pyrex tubes and quenching the melts in water. Loss of weight in preparation was less than 0.02 pct in all cases. The effusion cells were made from high-purity, nonporous graphite. Graphite was chosen because of its resistance to reaction with lead and tin and because it can be accurately machined with precision orifices. Two cells were used with overall dimensions as shown in Fig. 1. The orifices of cells 1 and 2 were, respectively, 1 and 1.5 mm in diam.

The bleaching of edible oils, industrial oils, and some chemicals may be achieved using natural and acid-activated clays. These materials remove impurities and pigments from the oils. In this work, a bentonite clay from Turkey (Somas bentonite) was activated with different concentration of H2SO4 and HCl at 70~90°C and 5~8 hours. Under these conditions several cations were removed from natural bentonite (Al, Mg, and Fe) and DTA-TGA, FT-IR curves of the solids obtained after acid treatment were examined. Treatment time and acid concentration increased the degree of destruction of the bentonite structure which was determined by ICP. Activated samples were tested in order to verify their capacity to bleach soybean oil and compared to standard commercial bleaching clays. The experimental results indicate that treated samples with H2SO4 have the same efficient in bleaching crude soybean oil with the standards and treated sample with HCl is more efficient in bleaching than the commercial products.

"A novel hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards has been proposed, which consists of selective leaching of copper metal as Cu(I) by Cu(II) in ammoniacal alkaline solution, purification, and electrowinning. The distinct feature of this process is much lower power consumption during the electrowinning than that during the conventional one from acidic copper sulfate media, because the deposition of copper metal from Cu(I) at the cathode and the oxidation of Cu(I) to Cu(II) at the anode take place in the present method. In the laboratory-scale tests using waste printed circuit boards, high purity copper which contains 1.1ppm of impurities was obtained in a chloride system. INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of various metals from waste materials is an important issue in order to conserve the environment and metal resources. Copper is used for cables, electric appliances, etc., and is currently a very important material for industries and will continue to be in the future. Among the wastes that contain copper, one of the most complex recycling materials is electronic scrap like printed circuit boards (PCB), which generally contain 10-30% copper as well as plastics, fibreglass and other metals. There are two ways to recover copper, either pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical. Hydrometallurgical treatments generally have more flexibilities in the process scale and control. The separation processes tend to become complicated because of the poor selectivity during the leaching in the sulphuric and hydrochloric acid media. On the other hand, the use of ammonia as a complexing agent, gave a higher selectivity for copper leaching (Nigo, Majima, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Majima, Nigo, Hirato, Awakura, & Iwai, 1993; Zhou, Shinme, & Anezaki, 1995; Koyama, Tanaka, & Lee, 2006) .In this study, recycling process containing leaching, copper deposition at a cathode and oxidation of copper(I) at an anode from ammoniacal alkaline solutions containing Cu(I) or Cu(II) is introduced. Furthermore, copper recovery from a waste printed circuit boards and impurity behaviour was examined in ammonia-ammonium sulfate (sulfate system) and ammonia-ammonium chloride (chloride system) systems."

The major fire and fire injury findings for all metal/nonmetal mining categories for 1990-2001 are shown in tables 64-65. Table 66, partly illustrated in figure 22, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, fire fatalities, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays for all metal/nonmetal mining categories by time period. For all metal/nonmetal operations (including stone and sand and gravel), a total of 518 fires occurred during 1990-2001; 296 of those fires caused 308 injuries and 4 fatalities (Ewhr = 4,012 x 106 hr, In = 0.015, LWD = 36,204). Thirty fires and 26 injuries involved contractors. The greatest number of fires and fire injuries occurred at surface operations; the highest risk rate values were also calculated for surface operations. The number of fires increased during the first four 2-year time periods (1990-1991, 1992-1993, 1994-1995, and 1996-1997), then decreased during the last two periods (1998-1999 and 2000-2001). The number of injuries showed a decrease throughout the periods, accompanied by an increase in employees' working hours. Twenty-five firefighting interventions by mine rescue teams in underground mines and at least 30 interventions at surface operations were required to combat these fires. However, 45 fires destroyed or heavily damaged facilities and equipment (including 19 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. Ninety-seven fires were detected late, and 30 fires were undetected. The ignition sources that caused the greatest number of fires were flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame (169 fires or 33% with 137 injuries), hydraulic fluid/fuel sprayed onto equipment hot surfaces (89 fires or 17% with 46 injuries and 3 fatalities), heat source/explosion and flammable liquids/ gas/refueling fuel on hot surfaces (98 fires or 19% with 73 injuries), electrical short/arcing (51 fires or 10% with 16 injuries), and spontaneous combustion/hot material (46 fires or 9% with 17 injuries). The flame cutting/welding spark/slag/flame source caused fires usually involving welders' clothing or oxyfuel/grease and other materials (including chute and dust collector liners, flammable liquids, belt material, crusher, hopper and shaker deck materials, washer plants, equipment mechanical components, stampler breaker, hydraulic fluid, rubber tires and hoses, gear boxes, bin feeder, dump rope cables, screen liner and screen panel, kiln and shaft material, pipelines, liquor pumps, wood pallets, electrical junction boxes, handrails, grease, refuse, shop and wood). The spontaneous combustion/hot material and electrical fires were usually detected late due to lack of combustion gas/smoke detection systems. IN the brown rock phosphate fields of Tennessee there are large deposits of phosphate matrix in which quartz is a major constituent of the gangue, and which cannot be beneficiated by the conventional washing process to yield a concentrate of suitable grade for use in the electric furnace. A huge tonnage of high-grade phosphate concentrate is produced in the Florida pebble district from low-grade siliceous feed. However, the characteristics of the low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore are such that flotation under the conditions employed in treating the Florida ore1-2 results in inadequate beneficiation. INVESTIGATION OF FLOTATION METHODS Flotation has been used in Tennessee primarily to produce a concentrate of premium grade by moderate enrichment of a marketable grade of phosphate.3,4 A secondary use was to increase the recovery of phosphate from the fines (down to approximately 200 mesh) from medium-grade ores with a concomitant moderate increase in over-all grade.3,5 It was considered desirable to investigate methods of improving the grade of washed products from low-grade siliceous Tennessee ore when these products were substantially below the requirements for use in the electric furnace. The present paper describes the results of a laboratory-scale study of factors that affect the beneficiation of such siliceous phosphate ore by flotation. The primary objective of the investigation was to ascertain the conditions under which the ore could be made to yield a concentrate suitable for reduction in the electric furnace. It was assumed that a phosphate concentrate for electrothermal reduction should contain at least 26 pct P205 and should have a weight ratio of silica to lime of not more than 0.80. Since a concentrate of moderate grade can be used in the electric furnace, and since, as Grissom4 has shown in detail, the ore will not bear the cost of expensive treatment, the study of collectors was limited to the relatively inexpensive fatty acids. A secondary objective was to determine whether a portion of the phosphate could be recovered in a grade suitable for treatment with phosphoric acid to produce 45 pct superphosphate. The ore consisted of variably cemented sand interlayered with clay. The sand layers were composed of grains of quartz, phosphate, and clay embedded in a matrix of clay and phosphate. Some clay was finely disseminated in the phosphate grains. Little massive high-grade phosphate was present. The material used in the flotation tests was a washed sand that had been separated from the ore in a bowl classifier at the TVA phosphate-washing plant. Numerous investigations of the effects of the various impurities common to commercial coppers have been published, and the data have found wide use in industry. Naturally, emphasis has been placed on the oxygen-bearing coppers of the tough-pitch variety, but need is now evident for data covering the oxygen-free condition as well. Furthermore, relatively few of the important reactions between oxygen and the various impurities are well understood, and often the data at hand are not applicable to the low concentrations encountered in commercial coppers. This paper presents the changes in conductivity and softening temperature derived from individual additions of the group VIII triad, iron, cobalt and nickel, to high-purity copper, and constitutes a portion of the copper-research program being conducted at the Central Research Laboratory of the American Smelting and Refining Co. The method of preparation of high-purity copper and its alloys in either the oxygen-free or oxygen-bearing form has been described previous1y.l The purity of this material, and the methods developed to produce it, provide the means for direct investigation of the very low concentration range in which the various impurities generally exist in commercial coppers. The usual necessity for extrapolation to this range using the results obtained from higher concentrations, and the interfering effects of extraneous impurities, are thus simultaneously circumvented. Since previously published data have adequately presented the effects of higher concentrations of iron, cobalt and nickel, the present investigation has been confined to the composition range o to 0.05 per cent. All alloys were initially prepared in the form of oxygen-free continuous cast rod, the weighed alloying additions in suitable form being charged with the pure copper to the continuous casting crucible. The best of the available high-purity alloying materials were used, and spectrographic analyses confirmed the absence of interfering elements from the alloys formed. Each series was compounded in the direction of increasing concentration, starting with pure copper in a new crucible and finishing with the 0.05 per cent alloy. Composition was closely controlled by adding the alloying element in the form of a carefully compounded and analyzed master alloy rendered uniform by continuous casting. The accuracy of this method of synihesis was proved by chemical analysis of the more concentrated alloys, and, accordingly, there is every reason to credit the stated composition of the very dilute alloys in the range where chemical analysis becomes highly uncertain. Unmanned mining technology in underground mines offers high efficiency, safety, and low cost. However, ground operators face challenges in accurately perceiving the underground environment through videos. This paper presents an augmented reality (AR) platform developed to enhance the unmanned mining process. The platform uses cameras and 5G technology to transmit high-fidelity video streams to the ground, where key targets are identified and virtual models are registered in the video to enhance the real scene. Tests in the Xinli stope of the Sanshandao gold mine showed the platform’s effectiveness in improving ground operators’ perception and production efficiency.

Coalbed methane (CBM) is currently being produced from a relatively small area in the Dunkard and Pocahontas basins, in the northern and central parts of the Appalachian Basin, respectively. In general, much of the production occurs where the coal beds are beneath 500 feet or more of overburden, where the rank of the coal is high-volatile B or greater (%Ro >0.8), and where the natural fracture system is enhanced by structural deformation. It is anticipated that near-term CBM development will continue within these areas and will expand in the Appalachian basin as technology improves and as the price of gas rises.

TWO groups of binary alloys were prepared. The first group consisted of those elements relatively soluble in magnesium: Li, Al, Zn, Ga, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, Hg, T1, Pb, and Bi. These are predominately Group B elements. The second group consisted of most of the remaining metallic elements, all of which are relatively insoluble in magnesium: As, Au, Ba, Ca, Ce, Cu, Ir, La, Mn, Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, Sb, Si, Te, Ti, W, and Zr. These are all Group A, transition, or rare earth elements. Alloys of the first group were prepared by melting sublimed magnesium and elements as pure as obtainable in a graphite crucible, using a standard flux1 for protection. The melts were poured into a small graphite mold to produce 3xY4 in. diam slugs. Spectroscopic analyses were made of each slug. In all cases, the total impurity content was less than 0.05 pct. The slugs were then heat treated 5°C below the eutectic temperature until complete solution, as judged metallographically, was obtained. Filings from the center of the slugs were compacted at room temperature into 1/2 in. long x 1/4 in. diam cylinders, sealed in pyrex under 1/2 atm of purified argon, annealed at the heat-treating temperature for 1 hr, and quenched in water. After the X-ray diffraction patterns were made, each compact was analyzed chemically for the solute. It was found that the Mg-Li alloys reacted during filing to reduce the Li in solid solution. For this series of alloys, the slug was cold worked, annealed in purified argon, the surface dissolved in dilute HC1 to a depth of about 0.005 in., and the X-ray exposure made on the fresh surface. This procedure resulted in sharp, continuous lines and in true values for the lattice parameters. The alloys in the second group were prepared in the same way except that about 1 wt pct of each solute was added. Since the solubility limit was exceeded, not all the solute dissolved. These alloys were analyzed spectroscopically only to confirm the presence of the solute. The diffraction patterns were of the back-reflec-tion type using the characteristic copper radiation* and a flat cassette. Both the film and the specimen were rotated. The specimen temperature was maintained at 25" ± 1°C. The films had sharp lines; their diameters were measured directly to 0.01 cm. The parameters were calculated from the line diameters using a modified version of Cohen's extrapolation method.2 his method effectively eliminates systematic errors such as film shrinkage, inaccurate alignment, and non-precise film-to-speci-men distance. The limiting cases of non- Newtonian fluids flowing inside a concentric annular duct are developed without using a model of the fluid behavior. The solutions provide limits with which to test the various models of fluid behavior such as the power law and Bingham plastic models. The results of previous theoretical work are discussed in terms of limiting cases. This limiting case study also shows that experimental work on flow of non-Newtonian fluids in annular ducts should be confined to ducts for which the ratio of the radius of the inner wall to that of the outer wall is less than 0.3 and preferably less than 0.2. INTRODUCTION During the last 10 years the problem of laminar flow of non-Newtonian fluids in concentric annuli has received much attention large1y because of its application to the hydrodynamics of the wellbore. Recently solutions utilizing the power law1,2 and Bingham plasticl,3,4 models have been published. In this paper the method of limiting cases, which has been successfully applied to laminar-flow heat transfer516 will be applied to the problem of flow of non-time dependent, non-Newtonian fluids through annuli. This method permits solutions for the limiting cases to be made without using a model of unknown validity. The solutions, therefore, provide limits with which to test the various models which have been or will be proposed. A pertinent conclusion concerning the region of experimental work is also provided. DEVELOPMENT OF LIMITING CASES The limiting cases for the axial flow of fluids in concentric annuli may be defined with reference to Fig. 1. It is possible to define two limiting cases which pertain to the physical dimensions of the annulus. First, the annulus must degenerate to a circular pipe as the radius of the inner wall decreases or, as k = (k R/R) ? 0. Second, the annulus must approach the limit of parallel plates of infinite extent as the spacing between the inner and outer tubes becomes small in comparison with the radius R of the annulus, or as k?1. It is also possible to ascertain three limiting cases which pertain to fluid behavior. With reference to Fig. 2, as a fluid becomes progressively more pseudoplastic, the shear stress-shear rate relationship progressively approaches the indicated horizontal line more closely. At this limit the shear stress becomes independent of the shear rate. At the other extreme of increasingly dilatant behavior, the vertical asymptote is approached. THE existence of isothermal martensite without the presence of the athermal form thus far has been established only in a 6 pct Mn, 0.6 pct C steel' and a 23 pct Ni, 3.5 pct Mn-Fe alloy.' " Theoretical calculations, moreover, predict this phenomenon to be observable only within narrow composition limits.' In all other steels, it is generally considered that martensite inevitably forms upon cooling below the M, temperature. Even the possibility of isothermal martensite transformation has been questioned for the common steels, although Averbach and Cohen" showed that martensite formation does not stop when the cooling is arrested and that as much as 5 pct retained austenite may transform isothermally to martensite at room temperature. This note presents some observations made on a number of low alloy steels by dilatometric and inductive measurement of isothermal austenite transformation at various temperatures close to the Ms. In the dilatometer studies reported previously, austenitized specimens were immersed in a salt bath maintained at proper temperature and immediately inserted into the dilatometera8' already at thermal equilibrium with the bath. The dilation was read on a dial gage divided into 0.001 mm intervals. Induction measurements were made with a separate excitation source and a test coil, sealed together in a salt-tight case. The increase in the induced voltage caused by the transformation products was recorded at a paper speed of 4 mm per sec. The steels studied are listed in Table I. Specimens prepared from steels 1 and 2 were in the form of hollow cylinders 60 mm long, 10 mm ID, 14 to 16 mm OD, while specimens of steels 3 and 4 were in the form of notched-bar impact test specimens, DVM type. Specimens of steel 5 were in the form of strip, 7x0.3 mm. In the bainitic range, curves representing the amount of transformation vs log time have a single step appearance, as is shown by the curve of isothermal transformation at 320°C in Fig. 1.Y ransformation proceeds in accordance with the Austin-Rickett equationo P -----------= k t" 100-P where P is the percentage of transformed austenite, t is time, and k and n are constants. Near the M, temperature, however, complex curves having two steps are observed. As shown in a previous papera for steel 3 isothermally transformed at 245"C, such complex curves can be separated into two separate transformations or reactions each following the Austin-Rickett equation. O material em estudo consistiu em um aço inoxidável austenítico 201LN, na forma de chapa com aproximadamente 5,00 mm de espessura na condição laminada a quente. As etapas de processamento adotadas neste estudo consistiram em laminação a temperatura ambiente e pré-resfriamento em salmoura, com o objetivo de avaliar a formação de martensita e evolução da resistência mecânica do material. As técnicas de caracterização utilizadas foram macro Dureza Rockwell C (HRC), Ferritoscopia e Difração de Raios-X (DRX). Os resultados preliminares mostraram que tanto a fração volumétrica de martensita formada, como a dureza, foram maiores nas amostras submetidas a maiores percentuais de redução e pré-resfriamento em salmoura.

Thermal reactions of l-methylpyrrole, l-butylpyrrole, and l-isopropyl-pyrrole were investigated by a flow method in the temperature range of 4500 to 5750 C. Those of I-butylpyrrole and l-isopropylpyrrole were also investigated in the 3400 to 4000 C range in a static system. The I-substituted pyrroles isomerize by an irreversible reaction to 2-substituted pyrroles. A reversible isomerization reaction shifted the alkyl group from the 2-to the 3-position on the pyrrole ring. All of the isomerization reactions are homogeneous, unimolecular, nonchain, first-order reactions having similar mechanisms and transition states. There is decomposition and cleavage of the longer alkyl side chain when it is in either the 2-or 3-position giving, as products, pyrrole, 2-and 3-methylpyrrole, 2-and 3-ethylpyrrole, pyridines, and hydrocarbons. The decomposition reactions appear to be by free-radical mechanisms. Pyridine homologs are formed by the expansion of the alkylpyrrole: butylpyrrole produces pyridine, and isopropylpyrrole produces 3-methylpyridine. Approximate Arrhenius equations are given for the formation of the decomposition products.

My. first paper, read at the Cobalt Meeting of the Institute,1 July, 1907, dealt with the behavior of a small Wilfley table when concentrating galena from quartz, the table being fed with natural products, with sized products; and with classified products. Since galena, having a specific gravity of 7.5, is among the heaviest minerals ordinarily concentrated by Wilfley table, it was desirable that a similar set of tests upon a mineral of, lighter weight should be made. Chalcopyrite, of a specific gravity of 4, would have been the best mineral for this purpose, on account of its great importance as an economic mineral, but in carrying out the test, however, I was obliged to content myself with a cupriferous pyrite, the specific gravity of which was 4.68 and the contents in copper 8.80 per cent. Through the kindness of Mr. H. 0. Cummins, this material was obtained from Shasta, Cal.,in very pure, clean, homogeneous condition. It was broken by rolls to 2 mm. in size, taking care to make a minimum of slimes. The quartz used to mix with it was pure, white, New England quartz, broken in the same way to the same size. In studying the accompanying tables, it should be borne in mind that the material concentrated was of low copper-content, and in many cases the quantity fed to the machine was 1 kg: or less.. As a consequence of the smallness of the 'quantity treated it was very difficult to adjust the table and get it in condition to do its best work before the feed became exhausted, and for this reason many results were obtained which appear irregular.

THIS paper offers examples of some of the typical calculations which occur in the ventilation of metal mines. The fi.rst section of the paper discusses the problems associated with natural-draft pressure; the second section presents the more common of the calculations concerned with the operation of mine fans; the third section illustrates the integration of the individual problems covered by the preceding sections into the larger problem of determining the operating characteristics of a fan for a particular mine duty. There is a very definite limit to the extent to which pure arithmetic can be successfully applied to the solution of min<; ventilation problems. As mines advance from the exploration, development, and initial production stage to the rime when underground workings become exceedingly complex, there is a considerable increase in the relative importance o theory and judgment in the solution of ventilation problems. These calculations illustrate the application of mathematics to ventilation, but they also in-elude examples of instances where arithmetic cannot be conveniently applied, and important estimates, based on judgment compounded of experience and a knowledge of the theoretical consideration involved, must be made. The inclusion of such estimates is intended as a guide and a warning to the reader; a guide in assisting him to recognize and estimate his own incalculables; and a warning that the solutions must not be blindly applied to his apparently similar problems. These sample calculations are intended to assist the reader in applying the theory contained in the standard texts on metal-mine ventilation. They have been selected from the ventilation experience of a British Columbia mine.
