The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc. (Hibbing, MN), investigated ways of enhancing the quality (compressive strength, after-tumble and reducibility) of domestic acid and fluxed magnetite pellets by modifying the oxygen content during the preheat and induration periods of the firing operation . Oxidation of magnetite was best accomplished when sufficient oxygen and time were available before the peak induration temperature was reached. The rate of magnetite oxidation increased directly with the gas oxygen content during the preheat period at 7000 C and above. With 30 pct ( or more) O2 and a preheat rate of 2000 C/min, most of the magnetite was oxidized during the preheat period. With laboratory tube and mini-pot furnace tests, oxygen enrichment during the preheat period improved the pellet properties more in the simulated grate-kiln tests than in the simulated straight-grate tests. The longer induration period with the grate-kiln test resulted in more sintering of the residual magnetite and its reaction with the silicon compounds. When flux was present in the pellets, calcium silicates and calcium and magnesium ferrites were formed. More calcium ferrite was formed when the magnetite was oxidized early and less iron was present in the fayalitic calcium silicate slag.

Large structural faults create serious ground control hazards, as well as adversely affect coal mineproduction. Two faults related to the Pine Mountain overthrust sheet in Buchanan County, VA, were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine their effect on ground control and to develop recognition criteria for prediction. Five underground mines encountering these faults were visited and mapped for structural information. This information, along with surface mapping, indicated that Pistol Gap and Keen Mountain Faults show right-lateral, strike-slip faulting and bedding planes slippage, which can be projected linearly and vertically. These fault zones are up to 200 ft wide, with coalbed offsets up to 18 ft vertically, coalbed swags (depressions) up to 15 ft, and roof falls up to 20 ft high. Recognition criteria include bedding plane slips, coalbed offsets, fault gouge, coalbed swag (depressions or synclines), and disturbed bedding. These recognition criteria will help an informed operator realize that many sudden coalbed discontinuities are related to larger geologic events (in this case thrust faulting) and can be projected linearly and vertically. Ground control strategies include mine designs that minimize fault exposure. Mining plans can be adjusted based on type and extent of fault movement.

Bord and pillar is the most predominant method of wining of coal in Indian underground coal mines. Development heading in coal mines often encounters roof stability problem and results in roof overbreak. Research on this reveals that the blast-induced ground vibration may have significant contribution in roof overbreak, especially, when solid blasting is carried out in the bord and pillar method. Solid blasting, in general, is associated with higher charge confinement due to lack of free face and generates higher ground vibration, which in turn results in excess overbreak.

The Bagdad-Chase copper-gold mine south of Ludlow, Calif., was visited by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in July 1955 to determine the mine's status of activity and to obtain a bulk sample for metallurgical testing. The deposit was discovered in 1903 and has been worked intermittently. It has a production record of about 273,000 tons of ore. The first production of about 150,000 tons was treated in a cyanide plant 2 miles west of Barstow, Calif. The extraction of gold was not satisfactory because of the presence of copper minerals. Since 1910 the ore has been shipped to various smelters in Arizona and California for use as a flux.

In 1987, the Bureau of Mines initiated a mineral assessment of the 5.7 million-acre Valdez Creek Mining District (VCMD). Following a literature search and interviews with persons knowledgeable about deposits within the district, limited on-site field visits were made to various deposits. Present within the district are the industrial minerals limestone, argillite, granite, basalt, perlite, zeolite, and sand and gravel. At least six limestone deposits of potentially economic size and grade are known to exist within the district. Adjacent to the Parks Highway and marginal to the district, a limestone deposit is currently being mined as a source of agricultural lime. A perlite occurrence near Yacko Creek was evaluated but proved not to be of industrial grade. The sand-and-gravel resources of the district are vast, but high silt content renders many of the glacial deposits unsuitable for use in construction applications.

Gold in sulfide ores is associated predominantly with sulfide minerals and occurs as both microscopic and submicroscopic particles. In non-refractory sulfide ores, gold occurs mainly as coarse- and medium-grained particles. Minute inclusions and submicroscopic gold usually account for a minor portion. In contrast, gold in refractory sulfide ores occurs mainly as minute particles and submicroscopic gold, and microscopic gold usually accounts for an insignificant portion. In gold ores containing carbonaceous material, the preg-robbing nature of carbonaceous material may impose challenges on gold extraction and cause gold losses. To extract gold from refractory sulfide ores, the ore needs to be finely ground and preoxidation is often required. Sulfide host minerals must first be oxidised to create a porous structure through which the cyanide leach solution can penetrate to reach the colloidal gold particles. The oxidation is traditionally achieved by roasting, autoclaving or bacterial oxidation. In carbonaceous sulfide ores exhibiting a preg-robbing nature, the carbonaceous material needs to be treated by roasting, autoclaving or other means to minimise the preg-robbing effect. As a predictive and troubleshooting tool, the gold deportment study plays an important role in gold metallurgy. It determines the deportment of gold in an ore or mill product and identifies the mineralogical issues that may affect or may have affected gold extraction. The information acquired from a gold deportment study can be used to assist in process selection, flow sheet development, recovery improvement and reagent optimisation.CITATION:Zhou, J, 2013. Most of South AfricaÆs high-grade iron ore resources are hosted within a fault-controlled structural basin in rocks of the Palaeoproterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Iron mineralisation occurs as individual orebodies in fault-bounded basins or as fold-controlled concordant lenses around an unconformity plane above the Kuruman Banded Iron Formation. The Sishen mine near Kathu and the beeshoek mine and Sishen South deposit near Postmasburg lie on the northern and southern border of a major domal structure known as the Maremane dome, respectively. The effects and structural constraints of at least three orogenic compressive episodes and several intermittent extensional episodes on the formation, erosion and preservation of iron mineralisation on the Maremane dome and surrounding environs were investigated. Ventersdorp impactogenal rift basin development at ~2.78 - 2.64 Ga, finalised with the deposition of the volcano-sedimentary Vryburg Formation during the thermal subsidence stage at ~2.64 - 2.6 Ga, and was followed by tectonic quiescence/stability and an extensive marine transgression across the entire Kaapvaal craton. The drowning event led to the formation of a carbonate platform with the deposition of the Schmidtsdrif and Campbellrand subgroups conformably above the Vryburg Formation at ~2.6 - 2.52 Ga. The initiation of distal (to the west of the Kaapvaal craton) off-craton oceanic rifting, causing submarine volcanism and associated hydrothermal activity, led to the deposition of initially manganiferous chert (Wolhaarkop Formation) followed by banded ironstone formations (Manganore Iron/Kuruman Formation) of the Asbestos Hill Subgroup at ~2.52 - 2.46 Ga. Initial passive margin rifting along the N-S oriented western edge of the Kaapvaal craton, initiated at the end of Ghaap Group time (during Koegas Subgroup deposition) at ~2.46 - 2.35 Ga, formed a prominent system of N-S striking, westerly dipping normal faults. Easterly directed crustal compression in post-Ghaap Group time in response to the Kalahari Orogeny (accretion of Rehoboth craton along western edge (Kalahari suture zone) of the Kaapvaal craton at ~2.35 - 2.24 Ma led to the formation of large-scale regional, N-trending F1-folds. Partial to complete inversion of the Koegas passive margin rift system (ie reverse dip-slip reactivation of the N-S striking normal fault system to high-angle reverse faults and dextral strike-slip reactivation of the Ventersdorp rift system developed in the Archaean basement), was followed by uplift, erosion and formation of a regional angular unconformity (Postmasburg unconformity). Uplift was accompanied by deposition of fluvio-glacial sediments of the Makganyene Formation (Lower Postmasburg Group) within an intracratonic peripheral foreland basin setting unconformable above Ghaap Group strata at ~2.35 - 2.24 Ga. Post-orogenic crustal relaxation and rifting caused extensional reactivation of the N-trending Palaeoproterozoic passive margin rift system and NE-trending Neoarchaean Ventersdorp impactogenal rift system, forming a fault-controlled depository for the volcano-sedimentary Upper Postmasburg Group at ~2.24 - 2.1 Ga. Deceleration in rifting was succeeded by thermal subsidence of the Upper Postmasburg Group rift, erosion, formation of a regional angular unconformity and deposition of clastic sediments of the Lower Olifantshoek Supergroup unconformable above Postmasburg Group strata at ~2.1 - 1.93 Ga. Renewed rifting led to the deposition of volcano-sedimentary units of the Upper Olifantshoek Supergroup within a rift system superimposed on the Postmasburg Group rift depository at ~1.93 - 1.83 Ga. Easterly directed crustal compression during the Kheis Orogeny at ~1.83 - 1.73 Ga led to renewed inversion of rift structures of the Postmasburg Group and Olifantshoek Supergroup depository, N-trending F2 folding and thin-skinned thrusting of older rock units eastwards over the cratonic cover, thereby utilising planes of weakness in the strata such as prominent unconformities and lithological contrast boundaries as principal dTcollements. NNW-directed crustal compression in response to Lomanian (Namaqua-Natal) Orogeny at ~1.15 - 1.0 G along the southern margin of the Kaapvaal craton, resulted in minor sinistral strike-slip reactivation of the N-S striking fault system, the formation of extensional NNW-SSE striking fracture/fault zones and the development of ENE-trending F3 folds forming a F2/F3 fold interference pattern. Post-Lomanian tectonic events (eg the Pan-African Orogeny at ~650 - 500 Ma, the Cape Orogeny at ~310 - 240 Ma, and the Gondwana breakup at 205 - 120 Ma), caused only comparatively minor extensional reactivation of the pre-existing fault systems. Iron mineralisation was ultimately preserved from erosion by Kheis Orogeny-related N-trending F2 synclines and Lomanian Orogeny-related ENE-trending F3 synclines, in particular areas of interference between F2 and F3 synclines representing comparatively deep semi-circular trough- like depressions, as well as in half grabens formed adjacent to reactivated westerly dipping N-S normal faults. Support for relating the iron and manganese mineralisation to structurally controlled hydrothermal fluid flow during the Kheis orogenic event has also been found, and ongoing research is aimed at confirming and refining the hydrothermal model for iron ore mineralisation in the Northern Cape.

Along with other transportation modes, the barge industry will be greatly effected by trends in domestic coal production. Traditionally, coal has been one of the major commodities moved by barge. Now, because of events in the international energy market, coal is finally getting the recognition it deserves as a major component of the country's energy program. Perhaps even more significantly, a series of events have caused other countries to turn to the United States as a source of coal. Although the outlook for coal demand is optimistic, it will be greatly influenced by the ability of the transportation sector to handle the additional traffic. Because of our long experience in moving large quantifies of coal, the barging industry is in an excellent position to capitalize on coal's increased popularity. A brief description of the barging industry should facilitate the discussion of coal as it relates to the barging industry. Barge companies operate on a 40.23-Mm (25 000 mile) river system which includes the East and West Coasts and the Mississippi River System. Included in the Mississippi River System are the Allegheny, Monongahela, Kanawha, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Warrior - Tombigbee and Mobile Rivers as well as some smaller tributaries. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which stretches along the Gulf Coast from Brownsville, Texas to Apalachicola, Florida, is also considered part of the inland waterway system.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivos estudar por meio da termodinâmica computacional alguns tópicos do sistema quaternário CaO-SiO2-FeO-MgO (CSFM) importante na siderurgia pela conexão com o tema espumação de escória, que são: (i) composições de saturação das fases sólidas ‘MgO’ e ‘CaO’ e (ii) a viscosidade efetiva de um ponto particular deste sistema.

The historical progression in installed electric furnace smelting capacity of some 1650 calcium, chromium, manganese, nickel and silicon ferro-alloys furnaces is reviewed. Key increases in the inherent installed electrical capacity, often achieved through uprating furnaces, are identified. Possible factors facilitating such advances are explored, including: specific process engineering and pyrometallurgical enhancements (e.g., improved control over the consistency, size and chemical form of raw materials, extents of preheating and pre-reduction delivered into the furnace; and patterns of feed distribution); furnace electrical configuration (AC or DC; immersed, submerged-, shielded- or open-arc); form of electrode (graphite, self-baking or composite); furnace configuration (circular or rectangular; closed or open and 1-, 3- or 6- electrodes); better engineering and equipment designs (e.g., high-intensity cooling) and state of furnace electrical and metallurgical control systems. A view is presented on the prevailing state of evolution of the Mega-scale in ferro-alloy smelting and opportunities for still further improvements.

Coarse sand flotation, both alone and in conjunction with gravity concentration, is a subject of research at the U. S. Bureau of Mines Field Office, Moscow, Idaho. One of the most important results of this work which is being carried out in cooperation with the University of Idaho, has been the development of a concentration process embodying flotation, classification, and tabling, in the order named. The flow sheet of the process is given in Figure 1. The type of feed desired for this process is coarser than is common in present "all flotation" practice, and is about the size of table feed.

Representation of actual oil yields from sections of the Green River formation oil shales by two types of drill - cutting samples was evaluated . Average oil yields of single sets of mud cuttings from hydraulic rotary drilling in Colorado and gas cuttings from pneumatic rotary drilling in Utah were compared statistically with yields of core samples taken from adjacent holes . Oil yields from gas cuttings were identical to oil yields of core samples . Mud cuttings appeared to represent a section of the formation conservatively , the deficiencies increasing with increasing richness of sample . Because a large amount of the oil - yield data currently available for the Green River formation is based on mud- cutting samples , development of a valid correction method by additional testing is needed .

The oolitic iron ore reserves in Lisakovsky, North Kazakhstan represent quite a challenging deposit both from a technological and from a resource point of view. The difficulties in processing such types of ore are connected with the extremely fine dissemination of phosphorus and gangue minerals inside the oolitic formations. The goethite crystals are cemented in their structure by aluminosilicates with quartz and other gangue minerals and dissemination is so fine that they are not separable by physical methods. The laboratory tests performed for dephosphorisation show that the combination of alkaline roasting followed by low intensity magnetic separation and acid leaching enables the obtaining of high grade iron concentrate. The magnetic separation performed ahead of leaching is effi cient as a means of buffering the high pH by washing out the soluble salts and the excess of base and after leaching facilitates the removal of secondary liberated gangue minerals in the non-magnetic fraction. As a consequence, phosphorous content is dropped to a more acceptable level for the ferrous metallurgy and iron grade and recovery reach 61.6 and 80.8 per cent respectively.

Sunshine Mining Co.'s Kellogg operation is the primary silver producer in the US. Maintaining a comfortable working environment in this deep underground mine historically has been a complex and costly problem. To improve the ventilation and cooling systems at a time of declining and un-certain silver markets, it was proposed to optimize the performance of existing facilities at minimum cost. This paper discusses a two-year, $400,000 optimization program that resulted in increased total mine airflow, cooler ambient temperatures, reduced compressed air usage, and lower energy consumption by primary fans, air compressors, and refrigeration plants. This saved the company about $650,000 per year.

"Increased rail capacity is required into Kooragang Coal Terminal near Newcastle, NSW, Australia to relieve rail traffic congestion and improve management of train arrivals. An additional arrivals track is proposed on new embankment within a heavily constrained site located between existing railway tracks, a high pressure gas pipeline located 7m beyond the toe of the embankment and an environmentally sensitive wetland area. Ground conditions at the site consist of deep soft estuarine clays, a soil profile which is consistently encountered throughout this part of the east coast of Australia. Upon determining that a ground improvement solution was required to ensure global embankment stability, various solutions were considered including a piled viaduct, retaining walls, dry deep soil mix (DSM) columns and concrete injected columns (CICs). DSM columns were adopted as the design solution, a decision which was driven by the presence of sensitive infrastructure and a confined site. DSM offered further advantages including reduced impacts on temporary working platform design, where the use of a thinner platform could be justified owing to the lower track loads of a DSM rig relative to other ground improvement techniques.INTRODUCTIONThis paper presents a case study of the design of DSM ground improvement works to provide support for and enable safe construction of a new railway embankment over deep soft soils with a number of nearby infrastructure and other constraints. The project site is approximately 1km long and is constrained by existing railway tracks, a high pressure gas pipeline and a wetland area of ecological significance. Due to the site constraints and ground conditions, a number of ground improvement techniques were considered during the design process, with DSM columns eventually adopted. This paper discusses the design development and the particular suitability of the technique for use in this application.SITE DESCRIPTIONLandformThe site is located along the northern boundary of the Kooragang Coal Terminal (KCT) at Kooragang Island (KI), a collection of former islands located near the mouth of the Hunter River, north of Newcastle, NSW. The topography of the original area was generally flat with mudflats, swamps and mangroves existing along tidal water courses. Subsequent dredged fill reclamation and development has amalgamated the previous islands into the current KI. The site area extends over numerous channel infills including the buried former course of the Moschetto Channel (paleochannel).Figure 1 shows the proposed 1km long new rail corridor construction area in relation to the various natural and man-made site constraints including existing tracks, the high pressure gas pipeline, the wetland area and the existing reclaimed area."

Traditionally, secant piles have been utilized to provide temporary support during excavation for shafts and cut-and-cover tunnels. As an alternative, the secant piles can be included into the permanent structure, where they serve as the envelope sustaining the lateral loads and gravity of the permanent structure in addition to supporting the excavation during construction. This has several benets, such as shorter building times and lower excavation costs. Recent construction of an approach structure and an underground station as part of Montréal, Canada’s Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM), one of the biggest transit systems in North America, was completed with remarkable success using this. In this paper, a case study based on a project that employed secant piles as the permanent liner is presented. Techniques to guarantee a watertight construction with over a century of service life are described, along with a variety of structural and waterproong methods applied to create an economical design.

THE ABRASIVES INDUSTRY throughout the world enjoyed a profitable year. With the exception of tripoli, the quantity of each kind of abrasive produced in the United States was greater than for any of the past 5 years and value of each was greater than for many years. Production of silicon carbide both in the United States and in Canada was the largest since 1960. Abrasive machining, which offers great potential for the increased Use of aluminum oxide, contributed to increased industrial productivity. Diamonds from the sea off the coast of South-West Africa attracted wide interest. Much of the production from this source has been gem diamond, and there is little likelihood of significant quantities of industrial diamond from that source. Manufactured diamond from all free-world sources was sold in the United States in 1964.

Introduction The great importance of air warfare during World War II and the introduction of large-scale air transportation and airborne operations created an immediate demand for large quantities of high quality light alloy products. Before this war, the use of magnesium, the lightest structural metal, was barely in the development stage, and considerable research work was needed to overcome difficulties in improving its properties and to attain uniform quality in mass production of magnesium alloy products. The Canadian Bureau of Mines was frequently called upon, by various agencies of the Armed Forces and of the newly established war industries, to examine magnesium alloys that had failed in fabrication or in actual service, and to advise on proper alloys and fabrication methods to be used. Failures in magnesium alloy castings were connected mainly with lack of knowledge of proper founding and surface-protecting techniques. Most of the defects were due to microporosity and faulty heat treatment. To aid the foundry industry, small-scale investigations were started on the effect of various factors in the casting technique in order to improve the quality of the products. These investigations were made in co-operation with representatives of the Armed Forces and the Canadian magnesium industry. This work was later co-ordinated into a broad research programme on magnesium alloys, comprising problems on melting, refining, various casting methods, heat treatment, and testing of properties of standard and special alloys. This research programme? is still in force, and the present paper contains some results of the first series of investigations on magnesium casting alloys carried out at the Experimental Foundry of the Bureau of Mines.

The Mercer Clay bed in central Pennsylvania has produced feedstocks for the refractory industry in the USA and has also been investigated as a source of alumina and lithium. Developments in global markets for these commodities, as well as rare earth elements, have led to their classification as critical minerals in the USA, in turn renewing production opportunities for the Mercer Clay resource. The work reported here includes a review of the clay types and minerals involved, as well as past mineral processing and extractive metallurgy test work, and reports new research results from renewed investigation of the deposit as a polymetallic resource. This renewed work has found lithium contents that exceed 1,000 ppm, lying directly below the overlying Mercer coal, where the alumina content ranged from 32 to 34 wt%. Total rare earth concentrations were somewhat lower than have been found elsewhere in the region, and the highest contents were also found to be stratigraphically close to the coal. Further work is required to establish the mineral hosts for lithium and rare earths and to define the extent of enriched alumina, lithium, and rare earth concentrations.

Roadheaders are gaining widespread acceptance in North America as a means for mechanical tunnel excavation. Until recently, almost all of the large-scale North American tunnel projects were excavated one of two ways ? the tried and true drill-and-blast method or with the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM), the hi-tech super-excavators. TBMs enjoyed fast-growing popularity worldwide as TBM manufacturers offered greater technology to meet the demand of the civil tunnel industry in the late 20th century. Recently, though, more tunnel projects, large and small, can thank the brute force of a roadheader for getting the job done.
