The objective of this paper is to analyze the evolution of the strategic drivers of the mining sec-tor over the last half century, which has been guided by a varying and expanding list of motivations. While companies cannot survive for long unless they are making profits, the strategic drivers of the industry have gone far beyond profits since at least the mid-1970s when environmental concerns began to be taken seriously. For the most part, these forces have followed global trends and public opinion, but they have been shaped and magnified by the significant, often dominant role that the mining sector plays in many economies. While the mining sector used to be primarily motivated by the first pillar of sustainable development -i.e. the economics pillar-, in the 1970s the second environmental pillar became an important factor in decision making, and in the 1990s the third social pillar emerged as a major driver.1 The entrance of new strategic drivers has also had considerable impact on technological and organizational developments in the mining industry; however, technological changes, driven by cost reduction considerations, have in turn impacted the strategic drivers of the industry, resulting in the need for further technological and organizational developments.

The term "fusain" was first adopted from the French by the American geologist J. J. Stevenson in 1911, according to Wheeler, (1),3 who applies it to that portion of coal resembling charcoal, which he treats as one of the four ingredients of banded bituminous coal. The term has since been adopted by American writers. The Germans use it with slightly different spelling - namely, fusit. It is the equivalent of "mother-of-coal" and "mineral charcoal" of the earlier British writers. The English word fusain is also applied to "a crayon of fine charcoal" and is derived from the Latin root fusus. OCCURRENCE OF FUSAIN IN COAL AND ITS RECOGNITION Fusain is fairly widely distributed in coals of all ranks in varying amounts. It is almost always present in very thin sheets between the bedding planes of the banded coal constituents and presents a jet-black silky appearance who n the coal is split away. As fusain has little cohesive power the coal splits readily along the planes where it occurs. Such fusain bands often attain appreciable thickness -- frequently 1/4 to 3/4 inch. -Beet (2) has reported a maximum thickness of 2 inches for fusain partings, and Sinnatt (3) has found it in the form of plates and lumps; one lump taken by him from the Peacock mine weighed 3-3/4 pounds. Bore (4) has found it in coal balls. Sinnatt (3) states that fusain occurs in two forms, "the first a hard compact variety occurring rather rarely, which can not be pulverized by pressure of the fingers the second type is the common substance" -- that is, a very friable, easily pulverized material. The writer has also found the two types of fusain in the same coal bed and has observed that the hard variety contained considerable calcium carbonate, which probably entered the material in situ by infiltration. Sinnatt further remarks that the layers of fusain (soft type) usually contain less moisture than the coal (or lose it more readily on exposure), and when exposed they quickly change to flocculent powder so that the fines of the coal as mined are likely to contain a major proportion of this substance.

By now the term AFMAG has been fairly well introduced to the mining industry. Several papers have been presented and published concerning AFMAG (references 1 and 2). However, the term AFMAG remains rather new to the industry, and the exact place which AFMAG occupies in the minerals exploration field is still somewhat uncertain in the minds of many who may have use for this new and interesting method of electromagnetic exploration for conductive minerals. It is the purpose of this paper to again review the basic theory of the AFMAG system, to describe and - illustrate the equipment and data presentation as used in aerial surveying, and to provide some idea of the cost and nature of airborne AFMAG surveys. This paper is primarily of a general descriptive nature and presents AFMAG theory in a schematic rather than mathematical form; emphasis is placed on the equipment, the present method of data presentation and survey operations, since it is believed that such, information will now generally best serve to inform the mining industry of the characteristics of the AFMAG system.

Using the quadratic formalism, thermodynamic equations are derived for the composition dependence of the heat and entropy of mixing. The applicability of these equations is confirmed by available experimental data on the activities and heats of mixing for binary metallic systems of Group ZZB elements. In a recent paper arkeen' introduced a quadratic formalism describing the composition dependence of the activity coefficient in the terminal regions of binary metallic solutions. That is, in the terminal region, which may extend to as much as 60 at. pct, the logarithm of the activity coefficient, log y,, of component 2 is a linear function of (1 - N,)' where N2 is the atom fraction of component 2. Similarly, for the other component, log yl is a linear function of (1 - N,)'. A number of iron-base binary liquid alloys were shown to obey this quadratic formalism. arkeen' extended this formalism also to any corner of a ternary system and showed that the activity coefficients of the components 1, 2 and 3 (1 is taken as the solvent) can be represented by quadratic terms involving five parameters, four of the binaries and one for the ternary system. Numerous examples given by arkeen' demonstrated the general applicability of the quadratic formalism to iron-base systems over a wide composition range. In this paper further examples are given of binary liquid systems (Group IIB elements, Zn, Cd, and Hg) and of several solid solutions, again demonstrating the appropriateness of this concept. A further purpose of this paper is to extend the quadratic formalism to the enthalpy and excess entropy of binary metallic solutions and to test the equations so found using available experimental data. QUADRATIC FORMALISM FOR HEATS AND ENTROPIES OF MIXING OF BINARY METALLIC SOLUTIONS The following equations, reproduced from Darken's paper, are for the two terminal regions of binary systems. at infinite dilution and a's are temperature dependent parameters to be determined from the experimental data. Although the quadratic formalism is an assumed representation of the data, Eqs. [I] to [4] are thermo-dynamically consistent with the Gibbs-Duhem relation and satisfy Raoult's and Henry's laws as limiting cases. As pointed out previously,' the following form of the Gibbs-Duhem equation facilitates the integration in general but particularly in regions I and 11, where each of the derivatives is constant. The partial molar enthalpy of solution i, (and i; the value of i, at infinite dilution) are related to the activity coefficients y, and y," by the thermodynamic relation Differentiating Eq. [l ] with respect to 1/T and substituting the above thermodynamic relation gives for region (I) It is reasonable to assume that over a temperature range of experimental interest, the enthalpy of mixing is essentially independent of temperature, implying from Eq. The coal-bearing areas of Kansas cover approximately 18,800 square miles (23 percent of the state's total area). Coal in Kansas ranges from lignite to high volatile bituminous, located principally in the south-eastern part of the state. Kansas reserves are estimated to be 987,500,000 tons, approximately 0.2 percent of U.S. reserves. Coal beds generally occur in thin seams up to five feet thick. The overburden-to-coal stripping ratios in Kansas are among the highest in the nation, typically 20 to 1, with some ratios up to 35 to 1. The first commercial coal mining operation in Kansas opened in 1865 at Fort Scott in Bourbon County. As in other states, coal production in Kansas increased during the industrial revolution, and then fell as industry converted to alternative fuels. Production peaked in 1916 and 1917, with annual production of 7,250,000 tons. Coal production today is by surface mining methods. The Kansas regulatory program was approved April 14, 1982; the Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 1, 1982; and the emergency program authority was approved January 10,1989.

"Northparkes installed and commissioned a secondary crushing circuit in 2010 to debottleneck the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill constrained grinding circuits. Following further improvements to the circuit (inclusion of a double deck vibrating screen), the project successfully delivered finer feed to the SAG mill. The result of this project was an increase in the milled tonnes from 5.6 Mt/a in 2012 to 6.0 Mt/a in 2013.The increased throughput rates introduced new challenges with the circuit becoming power limited. How to best optimise the available comminution power, while delivering the optimal particle size to the flotation circuit was made the key optimisation objective. To achieve this objective, Northparkes initiated a project that included engaging comminution experts. Recommendations included changes to the SAG mill including mill lifter design, increased grinding media charge levels and reduced grinding media size with aim of producing a finer grind size.Northparkes implemented these recommendations along with some other changes to SAG discharge grates and the mill discharge vibrating screen. This achieved a substantial reduction in the flotation feed particle size distribution (approximately 20 microns) by utilising increased average SAG power utilisation, in turn resulting in a two per cent increase in copper recovery.With power utilisation now maximised, the next phase of optimisation has moved to the throughput-grind-recovery relationship and the cost benefit analysis of installing additional grinding power.Citation:Sulianto, Y, Trott, T, Morgan, D, Bell, T, Kock, F and Putland, B, 2016. "The Antamina project, owned by BHP Billiton Plc, Mitsubishi Corporation, Noranda Inc., and Teck Cominco Ltd., is a $2.3 billion copper/ zinc project, located in the Ancash Department of Peru. The project consists of an open pit mine, a 70 000 ton per day concentrator, a 302 km long concentrate pipeline, port facilities, a new access road, power line, and town site. The project is designed to produce up to 1.5 Mtpy of copper and zinc concentrates over a 23 year project life, and will be the third largest producer of zinc and the seventh largest producer of copper in the world.This mega project is the largest mining investment in the country and, during its construction stage, was the most important construction project worldwide. On May 28, 2001, Antamina commenced testing operations and four months later, it reached commercial production. Antamina was officially inaugurated on November 14, 2001 by Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo.The construction stage of the project generated 8000 direct jobs, with a peak of 10 000 employees, and 30 000 indirect jobs. The permanent workforce consists of approximately 1650 employees, the vast majority of which are Peruvian Nationals, around 30% of whom came from the region where the deposit is located. Approximately 5600 indirect jobs were generated from the project. Independent sources state that Antamina increased the Peruvian mining exports by 30% (mining exports constitute 50% of Peru’s total exports) and Peruvian GDP by 1% in its first year of full operation in 2002.Since winning the privatization bid for the project in 1996, the company has implemented an approach to community development and environmental protection based on sustainable development principals. Throughout the development of the project, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to ensure full involvement of the local populations in community development activities and the company’s environmental program.Due to its size, difficult logistics, cultural considerations and financial aspects, the project has faced a number of unique challenges in the area of environmental protection and management of community interaction. Antamina has been innovative in its approach to these issues and, as a result, has set new standards in Peru for environmental and community management and sustainable development."

ONE of the methods for preparing a fiber-reinforced composite is that of directional solidification of a eutectic melt. Its major drawback lies in the fact that the matrix in this case is a pure constituent (or a terminal solid solution of fixed concentration) and the ratio of fiber to matrix volume is fixed. Only very few, if any, pure metal matrices possess technically useful properties, and the necessity for alloying is the inevitable consequence of this fact. Nevertheless, structures similar to binary eutectic ones can be obtained in higher-order systems by pseudoeutectic reactions of a type where crystallites and a solid-solution matrix are simultaneously precipitated from a liquid.1"3 Trials to solidify such alloys directionally—the matrix consisting of a solid solution of chromium, nickel, and silicon and the reinforcing phase being Cr3C2— will be reported elsewhere.4 This note describes constitutional studies carried out primarily to determine -the position of the pseudoeutectic and further to insure that no undesirable reactions between the reinforcing phase and components of the matrix occur in the solid state at elevated temperatures. In the investigation it was specifically desired to reinforce a matrix which is as close as possible to the 80/20 Nichrome composition with Cr3C2 to insure good oxidation resistance and improve the strength at high temperatures. No konstitutional information on the quaternary C-Cr-Ni-Si svstem in the range of interest was found in the literature. Nevertheless, the two most important ternaries c-cr-Ni5 and have been completely investigated. On C-Cr-Si some investigations have been conducted,7"9 and C-Ni-Si was studied with a few alloys in the course of the present investination 9 Eight alloys were prepared to investigate the changes in the constitution of the ternary C-Cr3Ce-yNi eutectic5 with silicon contents up to 10 wt pct. Five alloys were made with varying chromium and carbon contents around compositions containing -60 to 70 wt pct Ni and 5 to 6 wt pct Si. The latter alloys were designed to locate the y(Ni-Cr-Si-C)-Cr3C2 pseudoeutectic reaction and to determine the maximum chromium content in solid solution compatible with a two-phase equilibrium between y and Cr3C2 only. The alloys were prepared from electrolyte nickel, semiconductor-grade silicon, high-purity chromium (99.999 pct pellets), and semiconductor-grade graphite. They were melted inductively in high-purity alumina crucibles under flowing argon. Twenty-gram charges were prepared and investigated by optical microscopy (including hot-stage investigations), X-ray powder methods, and electronmicroprobe analysis. The alloys were studied in the as-cast condition and also after a homogenization annealing treatment of 48 days at 900°C in evacuated quartz ampoules. The structures of all alloys based on the ternary eutectic plus silicon in the as-cast state consisted generally of an inhomogeneous solid solution and at least two other phases. Annealing of the alloys showed that the solid solution was homogenized but that an incomplete solid-state reaction had taken place in all alloys with silicon contents over 5 wt pct. This reaction is clearly visible in Fig. 1 around the large Cr3C2 crystals (gray areas). Below this concentration, the alloys consisted of a homogeneous matrix and precipitates of Cr3C2 plus graphite, Fig. 2. The Cr3C2 was entirely unreacted here. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing, and grinding methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that in many instances publication of total production costs may cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The following report deals with the methods employed by the Malvern Clay Co., Malvern, Carroll County, Ohio. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of the following persons: H. C. A remoção do fosfóro através do processo de desfosforação do ferro-gusa tem sido cada vez mais relevante, devido a influência que exerce de forma prejudicial as propriedades do aço e devido a extensão do cenário de escassez de minérios com menor teores de fosfóro. Este trabalho tem como objetivo a avaliação termodinâmica computacional de misturas a base de dolomita e finos de minério utilizadas no processo de desfosforação realizado em panela para o refino do ferro-gusa. Foi utilizado o software Factsage para avaliação termodinâmica, tendo este se mostrado eficaz na determinação da concentração de fósforo de equilíbrio no metal, fases presentes e temperatura de fusão das misturas. Verificou-se uma tendência de maiores valores de eficiência para o processo de desfosforação quando aumenta-se a razão de massa de desfosforante e massa de gusa.

The Twin Buttes camp embraces eight mines in the Pima mining district. The first mining claims in the camp are said to have been located in 1876, but little mining was done until 1905. Intermittent operation of five of the mi.nes to 1928 yielded 388,231 tons of ore averaging 6.19 percent copper and 8 small tonnage of high-grade oxidized zinc ore. While the Bureau was investigating the area, one mine was active, and it started to produce in 1944. The mines of the Twin Buttes camp are at or near contacts of intrusive granite with Paleozoic limestones and quartzite. The ore shoots lie in metamorphosed sediments adjacent to a zone of garnet rock that separates the ore from the footwall granite. Small fissures that originate at the contact and cut the sedimentaries appear to have been controlling factors in ore deposition. No important ore bodies are exposed at the surface, and those developed wore discovered by sinking on the fissure veins to the contact zone. Most of the area overlying the favorable ore zone is covered by alluvium ranging in thickness from 5 to more than 20 feet.

Background The CSIR Division of Mining Technology assumed responsibility for the operations of the Hoist Rope and Mechanical Test Laboratories at Cottesloe in April 1999. The laboratories were previously the responsibility of the CSIR’s Division of Manufacturing and Materials Technology, before which they fell under the National Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (also of CSIR). As the focus of this conference is on safety in mines research institutes, it was thought appropriate that this paper should review some of the activities at Cottesloe and its role in supporting mine safety strategies.

Em virtude da periculosidade do Pó de aciaria (PAE), práticas alternativas, como a reinserção do resíduo no processo produtivo, ou sua incorporação em outros materiais fizeram com que a reciclagem tenha se tornado uma via para este subproduto. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo identificar as áreas de desenvolvimento tecnológico de utilização do PAE, avaliar a potencialidade de reaproveitamento e reciclagem do resíduo oriundo do processo de produção do aço carbono, comparando as características obtidas do PAE analisado com os requisitos indicados através da análise de patentes. O PAE produzido no estado de Pernambuco foi caracterizado pelas técnicas de Fluorescência de raios X (FRX), separação granulométrica via peneiramento, distribuição do tamanho de partículas, Difração de raios X (DRX), Microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e Espectroscopia por energia dispersiva (EDS). A prospecção tecnológica foi realizada nas bases de patentes europeia EPO e na base nacional de patentes nacional do INPI. As análises realizadas mostraram que o material apresentou aproximadamente 28,5% de suas partículas com granulometria inferior a 53μm, composto em sua maioria por ferro e zinco presentes na forma de óxidos, organizados nas fases franklinita, zincita e magnetita. A baixa granulometria e composição química possibilitam a sua aplicação no campo dos materiais cerâmicos, bem como sua reinserção no processo de fabricação. O resíduo estudado apresentou características similares com os demais resíduos observados nas patentes.

Soil erosion is strongly related to soil hydraulic properties. Understanding how surface coal mining impacts those properties is important in developing effective management practices to control erosion during reclamation. Soils from undisturbed areas, roughly graded mine spoil, replaced topsoil before seeding, and revegetated areas at the Rosebud Mine in Eastern Montana were evaluated to determine impacts on soil hydraulic properties. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine soil hydraulic properties, including particle-size distribution, organic matter content, and saturated hydraulic conductivity. WEPP simulations and risk analyses were performed on the soil hydraulic property data to determine the impacts of changes on soil erosion. The hydraulic properties of the soils in each representative area have significant differences due to the mining and reclamation practices at the mine. WEPP simulations show that the potential for soil erosion increases due to mining activities disturbing the soil. WEPP simulations also indicate that the potential for erosion may return to pre-mining levels over time with effective revegetation practices.

In the first part of this paper the authors present an overview of industrial minerals produced in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, and supplied to the Pacific Rim countries. The second part outlines some of the unique opportunities for industrial minerals that exist in the three western Canadian provinces and those minerals we feel have development potential for overseas markets. Because of time constraints, it is not an exhaustive presentation on industrial minerals, but is focused on a few selected minerals that we believe have high potential.

La stabilité des bancs miniers est un élément important de la conception des fosses. Il n’y a pas de consensus sur les critères à utiliser pour évaluer la fiabilité des bancs miniers. Lors de la conception des fosses, la fiabilité des bancs miniers est analysée à l’aide d’un ou deux critères. L’objectif de cet article est d’analyser l’efficacité de la conception des bancs miniers de la fosse Tiriganiaq du projet minier Meliadine par rapport à des critères de fiabilité rencontrés dans la littérature et la pratique. L’article présente les similitudes et les différences entre les résultats obtenus pour les différents critères et propose une approche multicritère systématique pour évaluer la fiabilité des bancs miniers à l’aide de cartes de susceptibilité.
