O presente trabalho avaliou o comportamento de extração dos metais cálcio, magnésio e níquel, contidos em licores sintéticos sulfúricos, utilizando-se o extratante Cyanex 272 (0,64 mol/L) e misturas entre Cyanex 272 (0,64 mol/L) e ácido versático (0,53 mol/L). Os resultados revelaram que a adição de ácido versático ao Cyanex 272 provocou um aumento nas extrações de cálcio, que atingiram cerca de 40% em pH = 5,1, decrescendo com a elevação do pH do licor até atingir aproximadamente em 15% pH = 5,9. As extrações de níquel (em torno de 80% em pH = 7,1) foram favorecidas, enquanto as extrações de magnésio permaneceram em torno de 75-80%, numa faixa de pH entre 6,0 e 7,0, em comparação com a utilização de apenas Cyanex 272 como extratante. O níquel pode ser separado dos metais cálcio e magnésio, pela mistura dos extratantes nas concentrações estudadas, em pH = 5,1, utilizando-se de 2 a 3 estágios de contactação.

Metal Mines Limited (Bancroft Division) was incorporated m 1964 to take over the assets of Faraday Uranium Mines Ltd., including their uranium deposit near Bancroft. Ontario. This paper outlines the geology of the Bancroft area, and. then go on to describe the principle rock types m the mine workings, especially the pegmatite, which is the host rock for the uranium mineralization. The structure and mineralogy of the orebodies are thoroughly covered, and, after a summary of the production and ore re-serve figures, the paper concludes with suggestions for further exploration work. Location and History M ETAL Mines Limited, Bancroft Division, is located in Faraday township, Hastings county, Ontario. The main production shaft and concentrator are about: Y2 mile north of Highway 28 and about 5 miles west of the village of Bancroft (Figure 1). The presence of radioactive minerals in the Ban-croft-Wilberforce area has been known since the early 1920's. Uraninite was found at the Richardson deposit near Wilberforce in 1922, and some attempts were made to produce radium from the deposits of the area between 1929 and 1931.

MR. Woo's succinct description of the mining and smelting of silver-lead in Mongolia, with the roasting-and-reduction process and cupellation, has much interest as a picture of methods that not only may have been in use, as he suggests, a thousand years ago, long before the existence of mining schools or chemical laboratories, but probably vary little, if at all, from the practice of prehistoric times, when King Priam's handsome silver vases, cups and bowls were formed. For it is highly improbable that such large objects were made from comparatively rare native silver, and the metal must have been smelted from ore, and most likely in great part from galena,, with cupellation of the lead. Dr. W. A. P. Martin, in his excellent book on the Lore of Cathay, points out that Chinese alchemy is over 2000 years old, antedating the European by at least six centuries; and he infers that the Chinese skill in metallurgy and many branches of practical chemistry owes its origin to " those early devotees of the experimental philosophy who passed their lives among the fumes of the alembic." Those alchemists, however, may have more likely derived some of their leading ideas from the mys terious, and at that time wholly unexplainable results observed in already very ancient metallurgical processes; in which, for example, certain stones were transmuted, as it were, into metals widely divergent in character from their ores, and even silver and gold were obtained from the most unlikely-looking mate rials. It is therefore, in any case, not improbable that the Chinese may have preceded western nations in the discovery of metallurgical methods. At all events, it is now evident that the Japanese acquired these arts from China, the former source of all their higher civilization. A mineral pigment is a colored substance dug from the ground, which after treatment can be mixed with a drying oil to form a paint. Not all colored earths, however, can be made into satisfactory pigment. Much depends upon the attractiveness and uniformity of the color and the ease of purification. Mineral pigments are distinguished from chemical pigments by a difference in origin and treatment. Chemical pigments are not found ready-made in the earth but must be synthesized or otherwise obtained from other compounds or elements; for example, cadmium yellow, a chemical pigment, is precipitated from a solution of cadmium chloride, hydrochloric acid, and sodium sulfide.

Search Minerals has developed a Direct Extraction Process for recovery of rare earths from the Foxtrot and Deep Fox deposits in Labrador Canada. The process includes crushing, acid treatment, water leaching, impurity removal, precipitation of an intermediate rare earth product and finally re fining of the intermediate product to produce a high purity mixed rare earth oxide (*99% total rare each oxides). The Direct Extraction Process has been validated in an extensive demonstration pilot plant program at SGS Minerals. A total of 3 tonnes of material was processed to produce final mixed rare earth product. The results of the demonstration pilot plant program are reported.

The occurrence of dust in mines has always been a source of trouble, but for any years, and virtually up to the beginning of the present century, relatively little of a definite nature was known as to the numerous ill effects of dust in mining operations. Even today, with the west amount of time given and attention paid (for at least 40 years in various, countries) to research and observation en dust in mining, and in spite of the experience with it, much information remains to be obtained, before definite, well-authenticated statements can be made as to numerous features connected with the occurrence of dust in Dines an of its effect upon the health and safety of the worker. One statement that can be made with relatively good assurance of being uncontradicted in that dust is a real menace to the well-being of mine workers, and this includes both health and safety. In addition, dust in and around mines and mining plants is one cause of large financial losses to mine owners and operators. FORMATION OF DUST IN COAL MINES IN THE UNITED STATES One definition of mining is "the processes by which useful materials are obtained from the earth's crust; " since virtually all of the useful materials of or in the earth's crust either are solids or must be reached by penetrating through solids, the materials that are moved in mining must necessarily be broken or disrupted, so that almost every phase of the work of loosening the material and transporting it is likely to produce dust.

The Bureau of Mines devised a column flotation technique using either fine or coarse bubbles and compared it with conventional flotation on a Montana chromite ore. On deslimed ore, fine-bubble column flotation produced a 44.7-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrate with 87-pct recovery, compared with 43.8- and 43.5-pct-Cr203-grade rougher concentrates with 85- and 77-pct recovery for coarse-bubble column flotation and conventional flotation, respectively. On undeslimed ore, coarse-and fine-bubble column flotation produced rougher concentrates containing approximately 41.5-pct-Cr203 with 95-pct recovery, exceeding conventional flotation which produced 35.6-pct-Cr203-grade concentrates with 87-pct recovery.

The growth of computer and ground control technology in recent years, combined with an urgent demand for low-cost fossil fuels and mineral resources, has set the stage for full-scale utilization of computers in mine planning. Steeply rising production costs and the need to preserve the environment are placing great demands on engineers to improve their mining efficiencies, which can best be accomplished by applying the full capabilities of the computer. Pressure to develop and perfect programs with an immediate potential for improving mine de- sign, reducing mining costs and extending the viable coal reserves of the country has already come to bear in the form of exploding energy requirements, environ- mental considerations and the visible limitations of other energy sources. The computer program discussed in this paper, RAMPLAN (Rock Mechanics Applied to Nine Planning), was constructed as part of a continuing effort at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University under the sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research to develop a suite of programs to benefit the mining engineer in improving mine design and evaluation techniques. This program averages out structural data values obtained from randomly placed or gridded point sources across a mining property and uses these values in structural design equations. The basic purpose of the program is to provide accurate estimates of mineable tonnages, based on a realistic assessment of structural conditions existing in the deposit, for use in subsequent evaluation programs. Program output, however, also provides sound engineering data for the mine planner to use in planning and laying out new properties. Mining dimensions produced by the program provide a good starting point for initial layouts; and as more refined procedures are developed for increasing and improving the quality and quantity of information from boreholes, this information may be used with increasing confidence. The rock mechanics principles utilized in the program are generally well-established with full details provided to the user. To produce meaningful results extensive input data, obtained from exploration borehole core data, outcrop sampling points, or mine samples, are required. To assist the engineer, details of the types of tests that should be conducted have been listed. By including all of the ground control equations in the program the otherwise long and tedious calculations can be performed easily and quickly, and the work can provide the basis for a more detailed ground control study. The program is written in Fortran IV Level G to run on an IBM 3701155 ASP and requires 156K storage.

"Introduction In 1925 the Bureau of Mines published as Technical Paper 346 a discussion of typical crude oils of the Western Hemisphere. That paper was one of a series of surveys of typical crude oils, and was the first of these to deal with properties of crude oils from countries other than the United States. The paper contains comments, tabulated data, and individual analyses of crudes typical of the producing districts of Canada, Mexico, Trinidad, Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, and Peru; for comparison, it also has analyses of typical crudes from the chief producing districts of the United States.The Bureau of Mines undertook a study of foreign crude oils for two reasons: First, foreign fields are potential sources of supply for the United States; in fact, considerable quantities of some foreign crudes have already been imported. Second, these oils are very similar in physical and chemical properties to oils found in the United States, and a study of these resemblances has scientific value.After the publication of Technical Paper 346, the attention of the Bureau was called to the fact that the two analyses of crude oil from Venezuela which appeared in that paper were not completely representative of the production of that country. Samples of other types of oil were procured through the cooperation of Mr. R. Ogarrio, manager of the Texas Petroleum. Co., Huston, Texas, and officials of the following companies operating in Venezuela; British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., Venezuelan Oil Concessions, Ltd., Creole Syndicate, and Venezuelan Gulf Oil Co.. Samples were collected and dispatched by Mr. D. 3. Park, representative in Maracaibo, Venezuela, of the Texas Petroleum Co. The value of the interest and cooperation of these agencies in obtaining the samples is gratefully acknowledged."

Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

CONSIDERABLE progress has been made during the last few years in analyzing the action of plastic deformation in metallic crystals. This is due largely to the development of X-ray spectrographic methods for studying changes in the orientation of single crystals, or of conglomerates, as they occur during the process of plastic deformation, but partly to the widespread knowledge of suitable technique for preparing large (single or variously combined) crystals for direct crystallographic observation under stress or in various conditions of strain. These two methods of studying changes in the crystalline structure of metals may of course be used in conjunction with features of mutual support, but unfortunately the advantage of direct crystallographic observation is lost when we proceed to the study of severely cold-worked structures, owing to the occurrence of real or apparent crystalline discontinuities which become more and more complicated as the amount of plastic action increases. Furthermore, the X-ray methods do not appear to be adequate, at least in their present stage of development, to fix definitely the character of structural alteration in the parent crystal lattice by plastic deformation. The principal question at issue concerns the nature of the crystalline particles that remain after plastic deformation. These are generally known in our American metallurgical literature as crystalline fragments,' and they seem, indeed, to diffract as individuals causing the Hull pattern of a severely cold-worked metal to resemble the pattern of a fine powder,2 with certain features of preferred orientation among the particles deter- mined by the manner and intensity of cold working. We must freely concede that there are conceptions of lattice alteration, apart from that of simple fragmentation, which would account for an increasing number of lattice positions according to X-ray spectrographic observation as the degree of deformation increased.

The potash mine of the International Minerals and Chemical Corp. is about 18 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in sec 1 and 12, T 22 S, R 29 E, N.M.P.M. Potash is produced from two zones in the Salado formation of late Permian age. The lower zone, consisting of a mixture of sylvite (KCI) and halite (NaCl), lies at a depth of about 900 ft, and the upper zone, in which the principal potassium mineral is langbeinite (K2SO4 2MgSO4), lies at a depth of about 800 ft. Because of the plastic nature of the material, fractures in the Salado formation are extremely rare and have been noted only on the 800 ft level of the International mine. The open fracture described below is almost unique. Only one other open fracture has been noted, and it was on a working face in the same general area as the one described, but was destroyed before the writer had a chance to examine it. According to J. E. Tong, foreman on the 800 level, this fracture was similar to, but smaller than, the one herein described. The saline strata are nearly flat-lying and comprise interbedded layers of halite, anhydrite (CaSO4), and poly-halite (2CaSO4.MgS04.K2SO4-2H2O), with halite predominating. The halite layers contain local concentrations of sylvite, carnallite (KC1.MgCl2.6H2O), and langbeinite. The principal marker in the potash mines area is a bed of anhydrite about 8 ft thick, and 70 ft below the 800 level. This bed contains varying amounts of polyhalite, and locally a few blebs of sylvite. Two principal marker beds are present over most of the 800 level. The lower is the "Middle Salt Marker," a bed of bright-orange halite, which ranges in thickness from a knife-edge to about 0.6 ft, and is usually bounded above and below by thin seams of green or reddish-brown clay. In langbeinite-rich areas, this marker usually contains abundant blebs of langbeinite. The upper of the two principal markers is a green clay seam, containing abundant halite, which ranges in thickness from 0.1 to about 0.5 ft. A conformação a laser (Laser Beam Forming – LBF) é um processo mecânico sem contato realizado pela introdução de tensões térmicas na superfície de um material com laser, a fim de induzir a deformação plástica. Neste estudo, foram realizadas conformações em chapas de 1,6 mm de espessura, de alumínio de alta resistência, classe AA6013-T4, com uso de um laser de Yb-fibra operando em modo contínuo. A potência do laser foi variada entre 200 e 1000 W e a velocidade entre 3 e 30 mm/s, com o feixe desfocalizado em 5 mm sobre a superfície da chapa. O ângulo de dobramento das chapas variou entre 0,1 e 2,5° por passe, dependendo das condições experimentais. Na condição de maior ângulo, 1000 W e 30 mm/s, a poça de fusão atingiu 0,6 mm de profundidade, porém sem alterar a microestrutura da parte inferior da chapa. Em todas as condições, a dureza se manteve constante em aproximadamente 100 HV, sendo semelhante ao material de base. Para verificar a aplicabilidade do método, foram desempenadas chapas previamente soldadas na configuração T. O método mostrou-se eficiente em corrigir o empenamento de chapas com inclinação de até 5°.

"Since the commencement of mining operations at the Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) in 2005, reverse circulation (RC) drilling has been the preferred method for grade control (GC) sample collection. This method was selected because it allowed:for multibench drilling (20 m hole depths for two benches of mining) to aid mine planning increased data density for comparison against the wide spaced ore reserve model angled drill holes to intersect perpendicular to the strike and dip of the shallow dipping mineralisation ability to take two metre sample intervals to enhance the understanding of the mineralisation’s short-scale variability and provide the ability to flitch mine.From June 2008 to December 2013, RC GC was performed using a UDR rotary cone splitter. The field duplicate data over the period displayed strong precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average relative per cent difference (RPD) of 21 per cent for gold. Up to 66.1 per cent of field duplicate data greater than 0.1 g/t fell within ±20 per cent RPD. This is within limits of industry best practice. The Mine to Mill reconciliations over the same period showed the estimated GC grade was 7.7 per cent lower than the calculated head grade (CHG).In December 2013, the Progradex sampling system (PGX) was introduced at CGO due to its advertised ability to capture 100 per cent of the drill cuttings for the complete sample interval, inclusive of fines. Analysis of field duplicate data indicates that since the introduction of the PGX, the sample precision has drifted. From January 2014 to February 2016, the correlation coefficient was 0.92 and up to 51.2 per cent of field duplicate data, greater than 0.1 g/t fell within the ±20 per cent RPD. Over the same 26 month period, the Mine to Mill reconciliation improved to one per cent lower than the CHG. Granulometric analysis of the RC samples collected from the PGX indicated the fines material(<212 µm) averaged up to 22 per cent of the samples mass and following assay determination, the fines material represented a weighted average of 31 per cent of the total gold content within the sample.This paper highlights the:importance of the complete capture of all drill cuttings during an RC drill programinfluence of fines material on the sample quality and accuracyimpact sampling of the fines material has on the Mine to Mill reconciliation performancechallenges experienced in commissioning a PGX system.Citation:Reid, B, 2016. "The use of small such as canaries and white mice, for detecting carbon monoxide depends primarily on the fact that the volume of respiration of these animals in proportion to their volume of blood is much higher than for man. Accordingly, when animals and men are simultaneously exposed to a given concentration of carbon monoxide the animals will absorb it more rapidly and attain serious poisoning in less time than men. Prom a practical viewpoint the use of the animals depends on the margin of time between observable symptoms in them and serious poisoning in man, during which man can return to fresh air or use respiratory protection. It should be remembered, however, that during the time the animal is incurring a detectable degree of poisoning, man is also absorbing some carbon monoxide, and the margin of time is not very wide. Experience with canaries has shown that an occasional specimen may have a tolerance above the average of the species and fail to exhibit symptoms before man incurs a very discomforting and possibly a serious degree of poisoning.It is also well known that physical activity increases the demand for oxygen by the body, and the respiratory exchange and circulation of the blood are increased to meet the demand. This sets up a vicious condition if carbon monoxide is present in the air because the rate of absorption of carbon monoxide is not only increased by the increase in respiration and circulation, but the absorption of carbon monoxide decreases the capacity of the blood for carrying oxygen at a time when the demand is high. These facts, together with the increase in respiration and circulation which attend excitement, underlie the caution to be calm and to walk slowly and to reduce physical exertion to a minimum when exposed to carbon monoxide. For these same reasons, when using animals for detecting carbon monoxide it is endeavored to keep them active, thereby tending to increase the response of the birds and widen the time between observable effects in the birds and effects in the man. As rule canaries are kept fairly active through fright at the unnatural surroundings and in their endeavor to remain on the perch of the cage when carried into the atmosphere to be examined. They also experience an excitement stage with oncoming carbon monoxide poisoning. Sometimes, however, especially if the air is cold, they tend to be inactive and quiet. Ordinary mice and white mice become inactive with use and also with oncoming poisoning. They huddle in the corner or the cage, and thereby not only reduce their sensitivity but make it difficult to observe signs of poisoning."
