Three different sulphidic raw materials were treated in a laboratory scale laminar flow fur-nace simulating suspension smelting conditions. The materials were a pure chalcopyrite concentrate, a high-antimony concentrate (tetrahedritic), and crushed copper mattes. The gas preheating temperatures were 500 -1 100°C ana the atmospheres ranged from N2 to N2 -75 % O2, Two particle size fractions were used for the concentrates with x = 20 -38 um and x = 62 -74 um, and three for the granulated copper mattes with x < 37 um, x = 62 -88 um, and x = 125 -177 um. Scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive analysis and backscattered electron analysis was used for determining the morphology and the mineralogy of the reacted particles. Fragmentation of the particles were observed in all materials during the flash oxidation, the conditions depending on the iron and sulphur content and the original particle size fraction of the material. The melting and/or reaction stages of the particles in different conditions were studied from powder samples. Polished sections were examined in order to follow the development of porosity and the mineralogy of the particles.

This paper describes the location, features, qualities, extent, and potential of iron occurrences and some associative resources - limestone and dolomite, coal, petroleum and natural gas, power, and water - in New Mexico. Reconnaissance investigations were made of 118 iron occurrences to determine their extent, attitude, and potential; character samples were analyzed to determine their quality and impurities; and pioneer metallurgical investigations were made on character samples to present their metallurgical problems. Some factors influencing past and potential iron markets are discussed. The most abundant iron minerals are magnetite and hematite, The higher grade deposits are extensive contact-metamorphic and pyrometasomatic replacements in calcareous Paleozoic rocks associated with intrusives. Low-grade deposits of considerable potential are the extensive Cambrian oolitic hematites of sedimentary origin and the Precambrian magnetite-hematite taconite iron formation. Iron occurs also as extensive colluvial and alluvial concentrations. A wide variety of accessory elements are indicated and these pose metallurgical and economic problems.

THE PROBLEM Two and a half years have gone by since the December, 1976 Civil Engineering article on subway costs caused such a furore. What has happened in this interval? Even after discounting the crushing inflation rate, costs are still increasing, and there is no sign of a turndown, even in the rate of increase. Some steps outlined in the article have been taken. In April this year, the first D.O.T.-sponsored Peer Review Group, made up of managers of other transit properties, met in Boston to review MBTA&apos;s $500 million Red Line Extension-Northwest for cost effectiveness. While the impact of a review at the end of the design phase, with substantial segments under contract, cannot be as effective as a review early in the design phase, it is nevertheless a start. This first meeting will be followed by a review of Boston&apos;s Orange Line relocation, the final design for which is just underway. In the industry at large two facts are evident: 1. We are failing to reduce underground construction costs. 2. Underground construction is in danger of pricing itself out of the market place. It has always been a greater challenge to design a Chevvy than to design a Cadillac, but it is the Chevvy we need today. Much attention has been focussed in the past on engineering design in the narrow sense: areas such as ground loading conditions and concrete design. Because of insufficient funds for printing, the Bureau of Mines was unable to publish its annual bulletin covering accidents at metal mines in the United States for the year 1933. A brief mimeographed summary of the principal statistical data for that year was released to the public late in 1934. Since then reports for 1934 have been received from the mining companies, and in order to avoid further delay in releasing this information to the mining industry and others interested in the prevention of accidents in mining, statistics for both years are presented in this publication with a minimum of interpretation and comment. The fatal-accident rate for the metal and nonmetallic mines (excluding coal mines) of the United States was more favorable in 1933 than in any previous year since 1911, the first year for which the Bureau of Mines obtained reports from the operators. Further progress was made in 1934, when the fatality rate was even lower than that of 1933. On the other hand, the nonfatal-accident rate, which had reached its lowest level in 1932, increased in 1933 and increased further in 1934, although not to such an extent as to prevent the rate for either of those 2 years from being better than that for any year previous to r1931.

Introduction The impact of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, or Superfund, as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and their state counterparts underscore the intention of the nation&apos;s lawmakers to reduce the risk from hazardous substance to American society. The promises and requirements embodied in these laws, together with their prospects for liability, will continue to have a very substantial impact on decision making in the mining industry. These laws present the prospects for staggering liabilities, often of an unquantifiable nature in terms of time and amount. It is therefore necessary to keep them in clear focus. This is particularly true in light of President Reagan&apos;s signing into law the Superfund amendments on Oct. 17, 1986, and in light of the Environmental Protection Agency&apos;s (EPA) major policy pronouncement of July 3, 1986, regarding solid wastes from extraction of ores and minerals. This article examines the general trends as well as the specific provisions of these laws in an effort to assess the prospects of liability for the mining industry of releases of hazardous substances into the environment. Hazardous substances vs. hazardous wastes The distinction between the terms "hazardous substances" and "hazardous wastes" is important to appreciate for the purposes of assessing the potential for liability for a mining operation. Hazardous substance is a term that appears in and is defined in the Superfund Act. In Superfund, it is defined by reference to other substances that have been declared to be hazardous under other federal environmental statutes, such as RCRA, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act. Hazardous waste is a term that is less all-encompassing than hazardous substance, as that term is defined by RCRA. Hazardous substances do not need to be wastes to be considered hazardous for the purpose of Superfund liability. A "release" of a hazardous substance into the environment can bring about potential liability under Superfund. Many mining wastes, even though they are not considered hazardous wastes by EPA under RCRA, have been determined by that agency to be capable of bringing about liability under Superfund if they contain chemical substances, such as the heavy metals copper, lead, mercury, zinc, silver, and others. Therefore, it is not sufficient for the mining industry to be able to answer whether one has hazardous waste at a mining site. That question only goes partway in addressing the potential for liability. The next question is, do one&apos;s solid or liquid mining wastes contain hazardous substances that could bring about liability under Superfund? Superfund 1980 law: A review Some provisions of Superfund as it existed before its recent amendments must be considered. The law provides that the owners and operators of mining sites, together with those who transport hazardous substances to such sites, can be held jointly and severally liable for the cost of cleaning up the site. The concept of joint and several liability means that one party, as among many, can be held totally responsible for the costs of cleanup. Economical dewatering of ultra-fine (minus 74 m) clean coal slurry produced in column flotation to a 20 percent or lower moisture level will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced fine coal cleaning processes. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of three dewatering techniques, namely, hyperbaric, vacuum and screen bowl centrifuge, in dewatering of ultra-fine (D50 -25 m) clean coal slurry produced by the &apos;Ken-Flote&apos; columns operating at the Powell Mountain Coal Company, St. Charles, Virginia. he hyperbaric filter using 3 bar pressure and 1650 cake formation angle, provided a filter cake with 23.6 percent moisture with a throughput of 800 Kg/m2-h and air consumption of 868 Nm3/t (460 scfm/t). The vacuum filter with 30 percent submergence provided a filter cake with 27.8 percent moisture with a throughput of 122 Kg/m2-h. The screen bowl centrifuge provided a dewatered product containing 32.9 percent moisture at a feed rate of 450 Kg/hr, however, the solids capture was only 65 percent. Addition of 1 Kg/t of a cationic surfactant provided filter cakes with 19.1 percent, 23 percent, and 34 percent moisture using hyperbaric, vacuum, and centrifuge, respectively. Similarly, addition of 0.5 Kg/ton of copper chloride lowered filter cake moisture to 20.7 percent and 24.8 percent, using hyperbaric and vacuum. With the centrifuge no improvement in filter cake moisture was noted. However, use of 80 Kg/ton of &apos;orimulsion&apos; in the centrifuge provided dewatered product containing 26 percent moisture, and the solids capture increased from 65 to 95 percent. The dewatered product appeared dry and was easily handleable.

The use of spectrographic semi-quantitative analysis has recently been of considerable value in establishing the geological relationships in a complicated orebody. The principal minerals found in the Mount Pleasant orebody are cassiterite, stannite, sphalerite, molybdenite, wolframite, chalcopyrite and galena, associated with arsenopyrite, pyrite and fluorite. In addition to the large number of minerals, a further com-plication is the non-uniform distribution of the economic minerals, with one mineral being the only one present in major amounts in one area and another mineral being predominant in another area. At the same time, all minerals are present to a minor extent throughout the deposit. This heterogeneity made it advisable to analyse all exploration samples thoroughly. Analysis by conventional means would have resulted in prohibitive costs. By the use of emission spectroscopy, however, it was possible to obtain, quickly and relatively inexpensively, a reasonably comprehensive picture of the orebody un-der investigation.

"Abstract Although one can think that it is very low the probability of a seism occurrence during the execution of an excavation in an urban lot protected by a diaphragm wall curtain, reality shows that whenever a seism occurs in an urban area several diaphragm walls will be affected by it. So it is advisable to consider the seismic action when designing a diaphragm wall curtain. The paper refers the main information about the seismic design of diaphragm walls according to the Eurocodes 7 and 8 and to the Portuguese Norms related to them (respectively NP EN 1997-1 2010 and NP EN 1998-5 2010), as the Eurocodes consider the possibility of each European country to adopt their own seismic parameters as the seismic risk is different in each country. Introduction This paper deals with the operations and plant of the Craigmont Corundum Project, formerly of Wartime Metals Corporation but now under the Mines Section of the Resources Development Branch of the Department of Reconstruction and Supply. Corundum is recovered by the re-treatment of an old tailing deposit at Craigmont, Ontario. Crude concentrates so produced are shipped to the plant of the American Abrasives Company, Inc., at Westfield, Mass., for final processing and distribution to the abrasive industry. The plant was recently described in a paper entitled Craigmont Corundum which was presented by the writer before the Chicago meeting of the A.I .M.E. in February, 1946. General The Project is located on? lots 4 and 5, concession XVIII, township of Raglan, Renfrew county, Ontario, near the village of Combermere, which is on Highway 62. The property is about 135 miles from Ottawa. The general area enjoys a pleasant climate with moderate summer temperatures, though the winters are rather severe, the mercury frequently falling to - 35 deg. F. The excellent boating, fishing, and hunting have made the district a favourite resort for tourists. Lumbering is the main industry. Some farming is carried on, but the soil is poor and much of the land is hilly and rocky. There are no other operating mines in the immediate vicinity, though several &apos;industrial minerals&apos;, including mica, feldspar, nepheline, beryl, socialite, and others have been produced in the area. The district is drained by the York and Madawaska rivers and is generously dotted with large and small lakes. The general elevation is about 1,000 feet above sea level, though numerous hills rising several hundred feet give a rolling appearance to the landscape.

Prior work by the Bureau of Mines demonstrated a feed preparation method that eliminates the formation of slime during leaching of calcined kaolinitic clay and makes leached residues fast settling and easy to filter. Nitric acid leaching rates determined for calcined kaolinitic clay prepared by this method were found to correspond to a zero-order reaction model for both batch and continuous, stirred-tank leach-ing. A rate constant of 0.136 min-1 was determined. Separation of solid residues from the reacted slurry was examined, and filtration rates were determined. Permeabilities of the flocculated, leached residues were around 51 darcys, or 5.0 x 10-7 cm2 for laminar flow through 4-ft-deep beds.

"The treatment of an oxidized copper-gold ore by stage cyanide addition was investigated. For cyanidation, free cyanide ion concentration can be an indicator of whether there is copper dissolved in cyanide solution, and maintaining the free cyanide ion concentration lower than 1.0 g/L could be an effective way to prevent copper dissolution and reduce cyanide consumption. For that purpose, stage cyanide addition was introduced to control free cyanide ion concentration within the range from 0.8 to 1.0 g/L. Cyanidation tests results indicate that gold extraction was still acceptable at reduced cyanide consumption with a lower copper extraction. Based on the experimental study, industry application works at Beiya concentrator of Yunnan province, China were successfully conducted. When the raw ore contains 2.95 ppm Au and 0.75% Cu, by stage cyanide addition method, the gold extraction was still 93% at reduced cyanide consumption of 2135 g/t, which was only half of one addition method, and the copper extraction dropped to only 5%, which indicated that dissolution was prevented for almost 75% of the malachites.INTRODUCTIONCyanide with its competency to form a strong complex with gold, is the most preferable lixiviant for gold leaching. However, cyanidation is not inherently a selective process since many other minerals present in the ore are also readily soluble, especially the copper minerals. Muir (2011) reported that every 1% reactive copper present in the ore consumes about 30 kg/t NaCN, which can have detrimental effects on the process efficiency and economics due to high cyanide consumption, reduced gold leach rates and poor gold recovery."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on cable bolt ground supports to assess their material and support properties, to provide design criteria for using cable bolt supports as roof control systems under various types of underground mining conditions, and to provide a mathematical model of cable bolt support systems. Part 1 describes laboratory studies of the support properties of cable bolts made of conventional steel cables and provides recommendations on such topics as the use of thick grouts, selection of breather tubes, and reduction of water bleeding in cement-based grouts. The studies evaluated both single and double cables; effects of different embedment lengths, water-cement ratios, and grout curing temperatures on support strength; effects of use or nonuse of breather tubes; pumpability and water-bleeding properties of grouts; and the strength properties of sand-cement grouts. Part 2 will cover the strength characteristics of birdcage cable bolt supports, epoxy-coated cables, and cables with steel buttons attached.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the technology of petroleum and its products, the investigation including well-drilling methods and the transportation, treatment, and utilization of petroleum and of natural gas, with especial reference to the prevention of waste and to increased efficiencyin the development of oil and gas resources in land belonging to or controlled by the Government. During. the winter of 1912-13 the enormous waste of the gas encountered while drilling for oil in the Cushing field, Oklahoma, called forth protests from various sources, and appeal was made to the President of the United States and to the Secretary of the Interior in behalf of the landowner and of the public in general. The facts were wanted regarding the amount of waste and the technical conditions that were responsible for practices causing it. An investigation was ordered and conducted under the direct supervision of the late J. A. Holmes, the first Director of the Bureau of Mines. R. S.Blatchley was sent to investigate the amount of waste going on in the Mid-Continent flelds.s In the latter part of March, 1913, J. A. Pollard and A. G. Heggem were sent to Oklahoma to study well-drilling methods with reference to the waste of gas from wells on Indian lands and to suggest means of preventing the waste of natural gas on such lands. Pollard and Heggem decided that the mud-laden fluid process, which had been used successfully for some years in Texas, Louisiana, and California was the method that would meet the situation most efficiently and economically. The method was accordingly demonstrated in Oklahoma. In 1914 Congress provided for the employment of six oil and gas inspectors to supervise oil and gas mining operations on lands of the Five Civilized Tribes in Oklahoma and to conduct investigations with a view to the prevention of waste. Positions under this appropriation have been held by William F. McMurray, James O. Lewis, Harry D. Aggers, Ralph R. "Weed,George W. McPherson, James C. Fowler, Louis W. Courtney, and Carl H. Beal, the technical work of these men being directed "byW. A. Williams, chief of the petroleum division, Bureau of Mines. After careful and impartial investigation of conditions in Oklahoma, these men also decided that the mud-laden fluid process was the one best adapted to prevent further wastes. In 1915 laws were passed by the State of Oklahoma that provide for the conservation of natural gas and oil, authority being given to the corporation commission to make rules and regulations and to employ agents to enforce them. After hearings and investigations, the corporation commission reached substantially the same conclusions as the Federal agents regarding the importance of the wastes and the best methods of conserving the gas. Technical Papers 66a and 68b were published by the Bureau of Mines in December, 1913, and January, 1914, respectively. Technical Paper 66 deals with the mud-laden fluid process in general and No. 68 with its application in Oklahoma. The interest aroused by these publications has been so widespread that within two years the first editions have been practically exhausted. Rather than reprint these publications, it has been considered advisable to replace them with the present report, which includes the results of more recent investigations. The methods of using the mud-laden fluid are an outgrowth of the rotary drilling system, which was developed in Texas and later employed in Louisiana and California. Some of the principles of the use of mud fluid had been observed and used to a limited extent for a long time in cable-tool drilling. So far as known it was first used successfully with a circulator and cable tools in the Coalinga field, California, in 1906,Harry D. Aggers, one of the contributors to this paper, working on the well. The part of the Bureau of Mines has been to call attention to its merits and to demonstrate its practical use in fields like those of the Mid-Continent.

T HE 121st meeting of the Institute held in New York City, February 16 to 19, 1920, was a great success despite vicissitudes of weather of unusual severity. On account of tremendous snowstorms, only two members of the Canadian contingent arrived, and several of our members from the west arrived thirty hours late. Two weeks prior to the meeting, the heaviest snowstorm in 34 years wrecked the surface transportation in New York; and it was only by special dispensation that arrangements were effected, with the New York Street Cleaning Department to clear away 39th street in front of this building so that vehicles could reach the curb. The total registration of members and guests was 1138.

A deposit to be mined by underground methods can be accessed by a number of methods: ? Adit ? Decline or ramp ? Inclined shaft ? Vertical shaft. Adits are an economical approach when the orebody is above the general floor elevation i.e. suitable in hilly or mountainous terrain. Incline shafts are limited to relatively shallow deposits, and because they are developed on an incline, development lengths for a given depth are the three to five times longer than for a vertical shaft. Vertical shafts are the preferred method for deposits deeper than 300 m but the development rate is slow and construction costs are very high. Declines or ramps offer early access to shallow deposits, which develops the ore body expediently, but are generally developed at a gradient of approximately 12 per cent. Decline haulages have become an attractive alternative to shaft hoisting, and over recent years the role of decline access has become more widespread throughout South Africa. Traditionally, South Africa has enjoyed the use of shaft systems, largely due to the large knowledge base of mining the Witwatersrand Basin, where vertical and inclined shafts were the norm. South Africa has also had the advantage of cheap electricity, giving shafts a definite economic advantage. However, in recent years the national power utility ESKOM has undergone an expansion programme that has led to tariff increases of nearly 100% over a three-year period. Based on the changes in electricity tariffs and technological improvements to underground haulage trucks, the economic inputs to access development have changed. This paper reviews mine access for shallow deposits as currently applied in South Africa. Based on current economic inputs, the paper investigates at what point a vertical shaft would be more economical than a decline system utilizing typical South African mining equipment.

Because segments of the Canadian mineral-based economy are dependent totally or in part on foreign sources of certain minerals, their well-being may well be affected by inability to obtain these minerals. Where such dependency exists, it is therefore important that contingency plans be available to counteract possible price increases or lack of supplies by means of technology, developed well in advance of any pending crisis . Canada is vulnerable to possible future real or artificial shortages of certain foreign-produced mineral commodities, and science and technology can provide information for the development of policies for counteracting efforts by foreign exporters to control prices or limit supplies.

The orebodies of the Giant Yellow-knife mine occur in zones of schist, in an assemblage of typical Precambrian greenstones which form part of the Yellowknife Greenstone Belt. One of the most interesting problems at the mine concerns the fold-like attitudes assumed by the schist zones. The internal structure of the zones and orebodies provides much evidence of folding. A logical conclusion would be that the zones represent a single horizon which has been folded and drag-folded in the ordinary course of mountain building. However, surface mapping, and correlation of certain marker horizons, in underground work, indicate a homo-clinal succession of steeply dipping flows. If this concept of the geology is correct, the zones must cross-cut the regional strike at a small angle and, in the over-all aspect, the regional dip at a large angle. A mechanical interpretation of the zone structure is presented as a suggestion for the present until new evidence is found.

Frozen coal creates severe handling problems. Utilities require uninterrupted supplies of coal to meet their increasing coal consumption rates. Difficulties incurred due to frozen coal result in more costly downtime for the utilities. Air cannons, vibratory hammers and thaw sheds are examples of mechanical devices used to break, crack or thaw frozen coal. Recently chemical treatments have been developed as preventive measures. The freezing of coal depends upon a number of factors, of which one of the most significant is surface moisture. The more there is, the larger the frozen coal problem. Slide 1 depicts a graph of frozen coal compressive strength as a function of surface moisture. Below a certain minimum value the coal will not freeze. Above this point, compressive strength is essentially a linear function of moisture over the range practically encountered. By surface moisture is meant the free moisture on coal having a normal vapor pressure as opposed to capillary moisture or inherent moisture. In addition to the straightforward freezing of coal surface moisture binding particulates together, frost formation occurs due to temperature gradients which develop in rail-cars and stockpiles .

Beneficiation of Nickel Lateritic Ore from Montes Claros de Goißs, Brazil Beneficiation is a key factor for both technical and economical aspects of industrial processing of nickel lateritic ores. A combination of comminution, classification and concentration stages are usually used to upgrade the metallurgical plant feed, thus resulting in both capital and operating cost reductions. This paper describes the testwork conducted on Montes Claros nickel lateritic ore in order to investigate the potential for upgrading. A comprehensive laboratory testing program included crushing, scrubbing, screening, grinding, gravity separation and attritioning, for both saprolitic and limonitic ore types from the Montes Claros deposit. The results indicated a clear potential for such an upgrade, which was later validated in a pilot plant program.
