"IntroductionThis paper is the seventh of a series describing an investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Mines on underground communication. A review of past work and results obtained has been published. The present paper deals with a study of line-radio or wired-wireless methods of communication, herein electrical energy is transmitted by metallic conductors.The use of line-radio over metallic conductors has been practiced for a number of years, and at present is being used on a large scale in long-distance carrier-current telephone and telegraph. The early work of the U. S. Army Signal Corps and the Bureau of Standards in using ordinary radio transmitting and receiving apparatus for communication over metallic conductors was been descried. Later publications describe commercial applications, and an excellent treatise and resume is given by E. Colpitts and C. B. Blackwell.Scope of ReportThis report contains (1) a discussion of the chief factors affecting carrier-current transmission, with particular reference in application to underground communication for mines; (2) a description of typical underground circuits used for power and lighting; and (3) description of apparatus used and results obtained in line-radio experiments in coal mines near Pittsburgh, with circuit diagrams, and conclusions as to power requirements and limitations for mine use."

Since the discoveries of favorable deposits are becoming increasingly difficult, mining operations shift to lower grade and deeper deposits. The viability of these operations is sensitive to many factors, such as commodity prices and operating costs. Given that a mining corporation has no power to set prices, the focus is directed on minimizing the operating costs. Underground mining operations require a network infrastructure, including shaft, ramps, declines, levels, cross-cuts, raises, winzes, and adit. The design of this network is a costly process. As such, it has a significant potential to reduce development and haulage costs. Furthermore, network design is a continuous process along with development, production, and maintenance throughout mine life. Under the constraints of the turning radius, the gradient, and the obstacle avoidance for haulage network of underground mines, this paper first demonstrates network design and optimization approaches using Dubins path combined with the Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) algorithm. A threshold-based model is developed, providing viable solutions to the network design when the number of declines is high. Furthermore, a three-dimensional Rapid-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm combined with Dubins path is employed as a heuristic solver for obstacle avoidance purposes in the network. Various case studies are conducted to show the applicability of the proposed methods.

Since crushing of rock to a smaller size is an integral part of almost any mining and quarrying operation, a study was carried out to identify and develop improved techniques for alleviating a major cause of accidents and work stoppages arising when an oversize luck or boulder lodges in the throat of the crusher. The configurations and operations of various crusher types is described, sources of boulders in the mining operation, and a detailed review is made of mining, quarrying, and construction regulations for all states, Canada, and the Federal Government for applicable provisions. Representative mines were visited and other operations contacted for their boulder handling techniques where it was found that blasting techniques used included mudcapping, bombs, and blockholing, often done very crudely and inefficiently with poor practices and various mechanical systems were used such is hooks of, overhead cranes, impact hammers, and grapplers. Safety analyses of all methods pointed out the hazards associated with blasting in the open and the dangers of entering a crusher. Boulder blasting can be done in a safer fashion if a planned step-by-step procedure is followed, and inherently safer blasting products such as exploding bridge wire blasting caps and improved blockholing techniques. In general, though, the installation of a suitable mechanical system such as an impact breaker will prove safer and cost effective even in a smaller mine or quarry.

This paper describes the sinking and lining of a 14 foot 6 inch finished diameter shaft down to and into the salt of a typical dome of the Gulf States region. The conditions and nature of the strata encountered divide the work into three distinct sections - that in (1) alluvial surface deposits, sunk through by open caisson methods, (2) water bearing rock, directly above the salt, and in (3) salt. In this paper the possibility to complete the copper recovery and to enrich in PVC a mixture of plastic granules obtained by grinding electrical cables are investigated. The recovery of a large part of the copper still present among the plastic granules was possible by means of a mechanical screening, the finer polymeric fraction was collected, at the same time. In order to complete the copper polymer separation the following techniques were employed. Counter current separation in water, static dense medium separation with zinc chloride solution and copper extraction with nitric acid and subsequent electrolytic deposition. A Tri-Flo® dynamic dense medium separator was employed in order to separate the lighter polymeric fraction, from the heavier polymeric fraction, mainly PVC. Water or a salt-water solution was employed to feed the separator device.

The project is located in the northern region of the People’s Republic of China and was awarded to Impregilo, as sponsor of the Wan Long Joint Venture, in September1997. The project consists of four tunnels for a total length of 88,700 m, with an excavation diameter of about 4.9 m. The lining is made of honeycomb pre-cast segments, connected by PVC dowels and the joints are sealed with elastomeric gaskets. The geology is mainly Limestone, Dolomite and Sandstone. Karst cavities are abundant and are often in-filled with plastic red clay. This has adversely affected the TBM’s progress. Four double shield telescopic TBMs were mobilized to cope with the very tight construction schedule and, at the end of November 2000, more than 80% of the tunnel has been bored. The article analyses the TBMs’ productions in the various geological conditions and the results of different technical solutions adopted at the project.

Micro-optical and synchrotron radiation-induced X-ray fluorescence (SXRF) techniques have been used to study unoxidized and oxidized samples of Carlintype sedimentar,y rock-hosted disseminated gold ore. In these samples, Where much of the gold is submicroscopic, the SXRF technique, which has a spatial resolution of about 20 ~m and a minimum detection limit (MDL) in the ppm range, is an ideal and necessary tool for precisely locating gold-rich areas in a sample. Gold-rich areas pinpointed by SXRF were later studied in detail by micro-optical methods, principally optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). In two unoxidized and one oxidized ore samples, SXRF analyses have shown gold to be present predominantly in discrete clay-rich and silicified areas. Gold was not detected by SXRF in association with pyrite or carbonaceous materials. SEM-EDX examination of the gold-bearing areas in the unoxidized samples succeeded in identifying only two free gold particles, 0.2 and 0.5 ~m in size. In the oxidized sample, gold particles appear to be larger (but still submicroscopic) in average size and more evident in micro-optical examination after SXRF location of goldbearing areas. The findings of these studies may help to improve the efficiency of processing and recovery of gold from unoxidized ores.

In 2004, the engineers at the Deer Creek Mine located near Huntington, Utah initiated the ventilation planning to exploit a remote area of the mine?s reserves. This area was located under a mountain which would not allow for the incorporation of an additional shaft or portal access near the proposed longwall panels. With this constraint along with the desire to maintain a two entry gate road system and the expected condition of frequent coal wash outs a ventilation plan was established. Different options were examined that included; increasing the current exhaust fan power, adding another exhaust fan installation, converting the ventilation fans in the active portion of the mine to a forcing system, and modifying the ventilation system in the active area of the mine to a push-pull system. The push-pull ventilation system was ultimately selected. This paper details the design process of the ventilation system upgrade, the procurement process for the new fans, and the new fan startup testing.

Owing to the broad scope of the content and the diversity of interests represented, the Annual Report for 1954 has been divided into two separate publications. Each is being published by the Bureau of Mines as a Report of Investigations, and the respective titles follow: R. I. 5118, Part I - R. I. 5119, Part II - 011 From Coal. 011 From 011 Shale. The introduction, identical in both reports, summarizes research progress in 1954 under the entire Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. On the 26th of June 2000 a hydraulic fill retaining barricade failed at the Bronzewing mine in Western Australia. The barricade failure resulted in the release of 19,000 m3 of saturated hydraulic fill into the mine and caused the deaths of three miners. Following this tragic accident, the practices and procedures of mines using hydraulic fills came under intense scrutiny by regulatory bodies and mining companies. At this time, the use of hydraulic fill at Normandy?s zinc/copper Scuddles mine was suspended and waste rock became the sole backfill material in use underground. By 2003, development of the adjacent Gossan Hill mine had progressed to a point where a self supporting fill material was required to enable full recovery of high grade ore. Cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) was identified as the optimal fill type and work began on designing appropriate management procedures and controls to ensure the safe implementation. This work included definition of the fill properties, plant design and construction, reticulation system design, design of stope barricades and drainage systems and fill placement control and monitoring practices. CHF placement began on 16th July 2004 and has continued to date. Significant operational experience has since been gained in areas including plant performance, fill product quality assurance, barricade construction, stope drainage and in-situ performance.

A bench-scale method for recovering lead and zinc from slimes and mill tailings from the Tri-State District of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas was developed by the Bureau of Mines. Dilute hydrochloric acid, containing sodium chloride, and chlorine gas were used to decompose the mineral constituents. Lead was electrolyzed from the pregnant acid solution, and zinc was precipitated from the depleted electrolyte by neutralization with lime. Up to 98 percent of the lead was recovered in an impure lead electro- deposit assaying approximately 85 percent lead. Zinc recoveries up to 90 percent of the total were attained in a precipitate assaying approximately 40 percent zinc.

During copper production in shaft and flash smelting processes at KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., lead bearing material of sulfide, sulfate, and oxide character is generated in forms such as slime from shaft furnace gas handling systems, converter dusts, and dusts from an electric furnace for copper removal from flash smelting slag. These materials are polymetallic concentrates of Pb, Zn, and Cu, with As, Cl, and Cd as impurities. Shaft furnace slime, containing. about 50% PbS and 15% bituminous substances, is the main lead-bearing material. At the Glogów copper mill, a new plant was commissioned in June 2001 to process 80,000 tonnes per year of lead bearing materials to produce 26,000 tonnes per year of crude lead. The plant consists of a feed conditioning system, three (3) rotary rocking furnaces with a capacity of sixteen (16) tonnes of lead feed fired with natural gas and oxygen-enriched air containing up to 45 vol% O2, and a gas handling system. The gas handling system includes a post-combustion chamber, a gas cooling chamber with Cl neutralization, gas mixing chamber, bag filter, and dry limestone scrubbing system for SO2 removal. The lead-bearing feed is smelted with five (5) wt% Na2CO3 and thirteen (13) wt% iron scrap at a temperature of 950 to 1050°C for three (3) hours. The smelting process consists of four (4) stages; feed drying, firing of gaseous hydrocarbons and solid coal from the feed, lead reduction from slag, and separation of molten products. The flow rates of natural gas and oxygen to the burners are controlled to ensure combustion of the bituminous material in the furnace. The process produces crude lead bullion containing (wt%) 0.1 to 0.5% Cu, 0.02 to 0.5% As, 0.05 to 0.07% Bi, 0.1 to 0.5% Sb, and 0.1 to 0.6%Sn. The process also produces a mixture of sodium silicate slag, Fe-Zn-Pb-Cu-S matte, and Fe-As speiss containing (wt%) 5 to 10% Pb, 2 to 6% Cu, 10 to 15% Zn, 1 to 3% As, 10 to 15% S, 0.5 to 3.0% Cl, 2 to 4% K, 4 to 7% Na, 20 to 30% Fe, and 5 to 10% SiO2. The dust is made up of PbO, ZnO, PbSO4, and PbCI2, KCI, and NaCI with a chemical composition (wt%) of 35 to 50% Pb, 5 to 15% Zn, 3 to 6% As, 4 to 8% Cl, 2 to 5% K, and 2 to 5% Na. The construction of the new lead production plant at the Glogów copper mill will process both current lead-bearing materials as well as lead-bearing material that have been stockpiled over the last fifteen (15) years to give a significant improvement in protection of the natural environment.

IN my opinion, the concentration of minerals by flotation is the most interesting problem in ore-dressing, and will command eventually far more consideration than it has at present. For many ores it furnishes a complete method of concentration absolutely independent of specific gravity, and thus simplifies the milling of many difficult combinations. Not having to recognize the influence of specific gravity, we are also able to dispense with some of the complications resulting from classifying-conditions. Where flotation cannot be used for a complete separation of the minerals from the gangue, it will be found, in nearly all cases, to save those portions which are generally lost by reason of their fine state of division. For this reason, it should be looked upon mainly as an aid to general concentration, although there are many ores so well adapted to flotation that more than 90 per cent. of the valuable metals can be recovered from them in one operation by this process. In presenting the results of my investigations in. flotation, I have endeavored to theorize as little as possible. That side of the subject has been extensively discussed by others. My earliest work with flotation was done in 1895, when I used various oils, grease, soap, etc., with results that were remarkable. I did not realize then that with water alone equally good separations could be made. Up to 1906, my endeavors were confined to attempts to keep the concentrates on the tables well wetted and away from exposure to the air. In common with others, I observed that when there was any obstruction in. the wash-water on the table of sufficient size to divert the water to either side, the concentrates collected, and, on exposure to the air, would promptly float away. The proportion of underground coal production as a percentage of overall Australian production has fallen in the last 10 years, with underground production remaining more or less static at about 53 Mt (58 million st). However, underground coal mining remains a viable industry in Australia, due to use of modern longwall mining systems. In 1993-1994, 26 longwalls were in operation, with total production exceeding 39 Mt/a (43 million stpy). Some of these longwalls achieve productivity levels approaching efficient opencut operations, and in some cases, they exceed them. These high-production longwall mines are not without problems when depth and distances from outcrop increase and the gas content of the seams approaches or exceeds critical limits. When gas content of a coal seam exceeds 6 m3/t (233 cu ft/st), gas flows into the mine may be sufficient to interrupt production from time to time.

"A study of the physical properties of long grades of asbestos fibers imported into the United States during the past eight years has disclosed information that will contribute materially to effective selection and use of fibers for electrical products. The study embraced fiber lengths, volume resistivity under three different conditions, total iron by chemical analysis, magnetic rating, conductivity of an aqueous ex-tract and its sodium chloride equivalent.The fibers examined included chrysotiles from Rhodesia, British Columbia, and Barberton area; marlime from Bechuanaland and Province of Quebec; amosite and crocidolites from Africa and Australia; and anthophyllites from Mozambique and from Georgia in the United States. Volume resistivity values provide a relative basis for estimating the electrical performance of end products; magnetic rating -an estimate of the quantity of iron compounds present in excess of those in the asbestos structure; conductivity of an aqueous extract; and an estimate of the ionizable impurities in fibers.Tests of these factors yield in-formation, not heretofore generally known, which may serve as a guide in the evaluation of asbestos fibers for electrical products."
