Efforts to evaluate washery performance are nearly as old as the art of coal cleaning, and in former years there was no uniformity in either the methods used or the basic terminology employed. This situation, and the con- fusion it bred, prevailed until about the time of the First International Coal Preparation Conference in 1950, Largely because of the interest of the French coal research organization Cerchar, the subject of evaluating performance was given prime importance at this conference. As a result, there is now a much greater degree of uniformity in terminology and methods of expressing cleaning results. The International Standards Organization currently is working toward international standards of terminology and methods that should improve the situation even more. The various criteria that are used to evaluate the performance of coal- cleaning equipment fall into three categories, depending upon the extent to which they are dependent on the density composition of the raw coal; some are directly dependent, others are only indirectly dependent, and still others are substantially indenpendent.

The Permian Cutler Formation in Kane Creek, Utah bears uranium ore in fissure-type vertical veins. This fissure vein formation and its associated host rock bleaching, weak argillic alteration, and base-metal sulfide mineralization along with the development of hydrothermal minerals, a 60 m.y. isotopic Pb/U age, and well-crystallized uraninite's structural control, give evidence of ore deposition in a hydrothermal environment consistent with Laramide mineralization. Mica polymorph studies indicate first, that temperature during the hydrothermal alteration or subsequent ore deposition did not exceed 200°; hence Cutler deposits are classified telethermal; and secondly, that rock alteration and ore deposition are closely related both in time and space, as is seen in argillic alteration sequence. Ore deposition in an alkaline to slightly acid reducing environment is postulated. Ore textures and mineral associations and distributions also indicate that carbonate complexes may have been transported with the deposing ores. Bleached rock formations are not primary strati-graphic phenomena. Bleaching, or changes in ferric iron content, results from a chemical process involving reduction and conversion of hematite to a soluble aqueous ion. Nearby Chinle bedded deposits (Moss Rack sandstone), containing shale lenses, fossil wood, organic debris and minor fractures, overly the Cutler formation. Chinle ores have a single reported isotopic age of approximately 200 m.y. Their chemical environment is assumed similar to that of the Cutler ores, though slightly more acidic. Two genetic, paradoxically divergent interpretations of the bedded deposits are derived from available spectrographic, petrographic, X-ray and chemical analyses. Kane Springs canyon is located southwest of Moab, Utah, south of the Colorado River and northwest of the Lisbon Valley mining district (Fig. 1). Uranium deposits occur along the northeast flank of a Kane Creek salt anticline where two geologic formations bear ore, the Permian Cutler and the Triassic Chinle. The Cutler deposits' fissure vein formation is an unusual occurrence in the Colorado Plateau. The Chinle deposits appear to be of the normal sedimentary type. Associated with the vein deposits are a number of features, including argillic alteration of sedimentary strata. The minerals of these deposits and their associated features have been studied in detail in a two year program entailing both field and laboratory techniques. STRATIGRAPHY A stratigraphic section of the lithologic units in the Kane Creek area is given in Table I.

Five sewer connections were required to divert Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)from existing outfalls to an old underutilized large diameter brick sewer (the Easterly Interceptor). The connections were part of an on-going CSO control program by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) in the City of Cleveland, Ohio. Each connection was made by pipejacking and hand-mining a fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) pipe through soft glaciolacustrine clays and silts. Jet grouting was utilized to stabilize the soils and fill the voids surrounding the interceptor prior to making the underground connection. Reinforced concrete liners were constructed inside the aging brick sewer to provide structural stability during ground improvements and connection work. The project also involved micro tunneling two approximately400 foot lengths of FRP pipe through soft ground using a slurry pressure balanced machine.

Dowsing is really IESG which inductively locates electric gradients (dv/dx) on the flanks of SP anomalies. "Sensors" are in one?s head. The "meter" consists of one?s body, limbs, and two $.69 welding rods. The method was calibrated near Mamainse Point, Ontario, where IESG-negative chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite-native copper ores reveal mineral zoning related to the IESG-positive Keweenaw fault, down which oxidizing solutions moved. In Michigan, the IESG-positive Keweenaw fault suggests that oxygen-bearing solutions from the Jacobsville Sandstone moved downward to oxidize hydrothermal sulfur to produce native copper, and to supply sufficient water to satisfy Walter White.

There are many technologies available today in terms of fire and life safety in road tunnels. So many in fact that it is becoming more and more difficult for clients and contractors alike to determine what they want and what they need. From a clientÆs perspective, fire and life safety is about protection to its infrastructure and to the public at large. Conversely, the contractor is looking to meet its æfit for purposeÆ or ædeem to complyÆ requirements in the most economic and practicable way. Practices regarding fire and life safety in road tunnels have undergone a degree of transformation during the last decade or more throughout the world. This transformation has largely been driven by a series of catastrophic accidents such as the major fires in Europe including the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Tauern Tunnel, Saint-Gothard Tunnel, and now most recently in the CityLink Tunnels in Melbourne. International guidelines produced by organisations such as the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses (PIARC), the European Union, the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) and the US National Fire Protection Authority (NFPA) now provide clients, owners and designers with the tools required to define and specify the required fire and life safety systems in road tunnels. The majority of these tools are based on risk assessment and risk management. Recent road tunnel projects within Australia, however, have not referred solely to such guidelines. Clients have opted to prescribe different or additional fire and life safety requirements within the projectÆs technical specification documentation (project requirements), leaving designers and contractors with little room to implement alternatives or substitutions. Further, these project requirements are largely dictated by practice established on previous road tunnel projects within Australia. This paper looks at the current international guidelines and practices and undertakes a comparison with the EastLink tunnels in Melbourne and other road tunnels within Australia and makes assessment on whether Australian methods are the most appropriate for clients and contractors alike. Focus is directed to the key elements of fire and life safety such as:traffic envelope, barrier arrangements and emergency walkway provisions;deluge systems;drainage systems;fire rating requirements;tunnel ventilation systems;cross passage provisions;fire safety assessment;critical intelligence systems including help phones, CCTV, incident detection, tunnel signage, etc; andexternal tunnel control systems.

The author contends that geoscience is presently under-utilised in the rock fragmentation by blasting process. Before we can set standards in this area, the following is required: mine geologists need to gain a better understanding of the blasting process and the blasting team needs to obtain a better appreciation of geology. Both groups need to be informed of what can be done to improve blasting outcomes, why it is necessary and how it can be achieved. By working closely together, both the geoscience toolkits and blasting expertise can be applied and focused on priority blast sensitive issues, with potential to improve mine economics and safety. Finally, and ideally, mine geologists need to take a leadership role in raw rock mass data collection and data management, and invited to take an active role in rock mass related behaviour data collection, integration and presentation.This paper attempts to provide insight into all these prerequisites for setting a new standard for collaboration and mutual learning in this strategic opportunity area. The potential for blasting to leverage downstream processes is highlighted. Blasting objectives and blast design principles are introduced along with the required rock mass related inputs. Some hazardous geological materials and environmental conditions are described, along with how they can affect operational complexity.Four case examples are used to illustrate the need for closer liaison between geology and blasting professionals. The first related to grade control blasting, aims to demonstrate how a blasting geology approach can add significant value. Case example two demonstrates how geological models and bench face analysis can assist with fragment control. The third and fourth case examples involve an overview of two case studies where timely geological and geotechnical knowledge input and intervention into blasting activities may have reduced losses due to blast initiated open pit slope collapses.CITATION:Little, T N, 2017. The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine those factors that are significant in affecting the velocity of flames propagating along the boundary separating gaseous fuel and air. In addition the aerodynamic motion of the gases in the vicinity of such interfacial flames was delineated. Parameters in the study included flammable zone thickness, flammable zone concentration of gradient, fuel type, and position of the flame relative to various environmental surfaces. Of all these factors, the flammable zone thickness and burning velocity of the stoichiometric mixture were found to have the most significant effect on the flame speed. Notion of the gases in the vicinity of the interfacial flames was examined by particle track and interferometric techniques. The relative velocity of the interfacial flame with respect to the unburned gas on the central streamline was found to equal the burning velocity of a stoichiometric homogeneous fuel-air mixture. In addition, it was observed that the composition of the lean fuel-air mixture at the boundary of the combustion zone appears to be less than that defined as the fuel's lower flammable limit.

Flyrock is the unexpected and undesirable projection of rock fragments during detonation of a blast and managing this risk is becoming an increasing challenge as urban development encroach toward mineral extraction sites. The basic factors associated with flyrock are discussed in relation to geology, blast design and management. Published data of historical flyrock events are investigated and compared with local information on incidents. Good agreement was found between the data sets. A computer program of flyrock was developed using projectile motion based on launch velocity and angle, rock size, shape and density. This deterministic model was coupled with a probability model to simulate blast events. The impulse time ?t of the explosive pressure was taken as the stochastic variable to replace launch velocity. The variables were calibrated to replicate field data. A simulation was executed to demonstrate the capability of the approach to defining flyrock danger zones. For a simplistic situation it was identified that an appropriate distance to be cordoned off for the blast danger zone is a radius of 120 m in front of the blast and 65 m behind.

In recent years, suction piles and suction anchors have been used as underwater foundations for various offshore structures. They have been proven very versatile, effective, and environmentally friendly. This paper describes the load resisting mechanism, installation, and design of suction piles and suction anchors. Also included are brief descriptions of three offshore structures that have recently been constructed using suction piles and suction anchors. They include: a new breakwater system utilizing gravity-type concrete caisson superstructure on top of concrete suction piles; a floating breakwater system utilizing embedded suction anchors; and a foundation system utilizing suction piles for temporary mooring of underwater tunnel elements.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) find wide range of applications from portable electronics to electric cars and stationary storage or renewable energy. LIB electrode fabrication is done through mixing the active material (Li-ion host) with carbon (conductive component) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), which acts as a binder. These components are dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) to form a paste which is then doctor bladed onto the aluminum current collector. NMP is a toxic chemical and the overall fabrication process remains costly. Efforts are made of eliminating NMP by (1) replacing the binder and (2) using a new fabrication method. Of particular interest among these new methods is electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Via the application of DC potential, particles in suspension can be electrophoretically deposited on different conductive substrates in a relatively fast rate rendering EPD feasible for industrial application. A key aspect for successful application of EPD is the formulation of a stable suspension. Within the McGill HydroMET group, we explore the potential of EPD in fabricating LIB electrodes having demonstrated its effectiveness in the case of P25 nanotitania/carbon anodes. The performance of EPD fabricated TiO2/C electrodes is compared to standard PVDF-based electrodes and shown to have comparable charge capacity. This method is now being extended to other electrode materials. In this paper an introduction to the EPD method will be made and subsequently its use in fabricating LIB electrodes will be described. The performance of the fabricated batteries is evaluated via galvanostatic charging/discharging and cycling tests.

Borates are minerals that contain boron. Trace amounts exist in rocks, soil, water and people. Boron-containing ores are rare and U.S. Borax, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Borax, controls one of the world’s two world-class borate deposits. Through its global systems of mines, refineries, ports, sales offices and distribution centers, the company supplies nearly 45 percent of the world’s demand for borates. Borax has been mining borates in California for more than a century. This year the company celebrated 131 years of continuous business in the Golden State and 76 years at its operations in Boron, the site of California’s largest openpit mine. It also has mines and refineries in Argentina, refineries and ship-ping facilities in Europe and technical staff in the United States, North and South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. So, with the 130±years of borate mining and processing experience behind it as well as its global marketing and distribution centers, there is very little that Borax does not know about borates.

A new and unique logging tool, called the Borehole Televiewer (BHTV), has been developed to inspect boreholes and to evaluate formations. Even though geologists and engineers have had only about 3 years' experience with the BHTV, the thinking of many of them has been radically influenced by the fascinating and revealing "log-picture" recorded with the tool. The BHTV fills a need for a logging tool that can produce a direct and descriptive record of the physical properties of the borehole environment. Although primarily developed to evaluate fractured reservoirs, the BHTV has been used successfully to solve a variety of problems related to formation evaluation and borehole inspection. Geologists and petroleum engineers have been confounded for many years by the problems of locating and evaluating fractures. Interpretation of the usual resistivity, acoustic or radioactivity logs, as well as the analysis of cores, for evaluation of fractured reservoirs is extremely difficult and often not definitive. This is understandable since analysis of cores from fractured formations has reported variously: (a) low porosity, (b) no effective permeability, (c) lack of any matrix oil saturation and (d) oil stains on fracture planes as the only indications of potential production.14 In recent years acoustic amplitude logs have been introduced and used with varying degrees of success to locate fractures.8'9'11"13 Conventional amplitude logs at best give only qualitative answers where quantitative ones are desired. The logs reveal nothing of the orientation of the fractures. In addition to these logs, various types of cameras, television, and rubber impression packers have been used for borehole inspection. (See Appendix.) The BHTV logging tool supplies both the quantitative and the orientation answers about fractures. The borehole can be filled with any homogeneous, gas-free liquid such as fresh water, saturated brine, crude oil or drilling muds. This tool takes an "acoustic picture" of the borehole wall. The resulting log is a representation of the borehole wall as if it were split vertically and laid flat. The log is oriented with respect to magnetic north. Any physical changes in the borehole wall are seen as changes in picture intensity. In this way, fractures, deformation or pits are reflected on the log. Tool Description The fundamental parts of the BHTV are shown in Fig. 1. A piezoelectric transducer probes the borehole wall with bursts of acoustic energy. A flux-gate magnetometer senses the earth's magnetic field and provides the means for determining the orientation of the log. A motor rotates the transducer and mag-

INTRODUCTION DURING the summer of 1919, the late Dr. Henry M. Howe, then Chairman of the Division of Engineering of the National Research Council, organized a committee to obtain a better insight into the behavior of carbon steels under the influence of various treatments by a proper control of the time and temperature factors. During part of 1919 and 1920, work in connection with this investigation was carried on at Dr: Howe's laboratory at Bedford Hills, N. Y. During 1921 there was an enforced hiatus in the work, occasioned by the illness which resulted in Dr. Howe's death in 1922. At that time one of the present authors compiled the results of the work which had been done and this was published in 1923.1 Following the publication of this work, it seemed desirable to carry on in the same manner an investigation of steel of C 0.75 per cent., which steel had not been as fully treated as had the other steels of C 0.34 and 0.52 per cent., used in the published work. Furthermore, certain unusual results have been obtained in the treatment of C 0.52 per cent. steel by quenching and drawing, and repetition of this part of the work seemed advisable. This has been done during the past year at the School of Mines and Metallurgy of the University of Missouri at Rolla, Mo., by a cooperative undertaking of the School and the Bureau of Mines, working in conjunction with the Committee on Heat Treatment of Carbon Steels of the National Research Council. The present paper is a report of the results obtained in this work.

Paper presented at the conference: Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in Exeter, UK, 23-24 March 1994, and first published London: IMM, 1994, preprint volume, 10pp., 11 refs. No completely reliable method for characterising and quantifying airborne dust risk exists. A new monitoring technology has been developed whereby dust collected from four-way directional and high volume samplers is analysed for mineral content and particle size for integrated dust mapping. A dust database was set up for the area surrounding the Ffos Las open cast coal site in South Wales. It included XRD directional traces from 17 gauges over 20 months, XRD traces from window ledges in the nearby communities, the major soil types in the area, dust data from haulage roads and public roads and reference-type mineral samples. The database can be accessed relationally to compare and analyse the data using mineral, direction, time, weather and geographical relationships. The South African mining industry continues to be a major source of employment at a time when at least 25 per cent of the working age population is unemployed. At the same time the industry faces a skills shortage in many of the disciplines necessary for its future health. The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa have historically produced mining graduates for the South African mining industry with any shortfall being met by the recruitment of overseas graduates. More recently, the global shortage of engineers and other mining industry professionals has seen a reversal of this trend and a very significant emigration of well-educated and highly skilled personnel. The traditional career path for mining graduates is in production and mine management. However, there is the parallel (and possibly more pressing) need for specialized skills in such fields as ventilation, rock engineering, mine planning, mineral resource evaluation, and mineral asset valuation. Chronic shortages in these essential areas continue to hamper the development of the industry and may well frustrate its ambitions to be safe, healthy, and profitable into the future. The permeability of skills across sectorial boundaries within the mining industry requires that skills shortages in the platinum sector are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of the entire industry. This paper reviews the efforts being made by the universities, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to meet the needs of the South African mining industry in terms of the required numbers and the range of specialized skills.
