Leonardite , a naturally occurring , partially oxidized form of lignite with a high content of humic acids , was investigated as a binder for iron ore pellets . Although insoluble in original condition , leonardite forms watersoluble salts with good binding properties when treated with certain alkalis such as sodium hydroxide . Soluble leonardite imparts excellent dry strength to pellets , but green strength is somewhat lower than that obtainable with bentonite . However , green strength can be improved by adding a small amount of calcium hydroxide to the leonardite - concentrate mixture . Leonardite binders were used successfully on three of the four different concentrates tested .

The production of low- and medium-Btu gas from coal provides a more economic source of energy for most industrial users than pipeline-quality coal gas (SNG), although the latter has received more publicity. The paper reviews existing and advanced methods of coal gasification, with particular emphasis on the production of low- and medium Btu gas for industrial and utility use. Some of the ways in which coal gasification can be integrated into power cycles and industrial plant energy balances are discussed.

Slope stability in open pit mines is governed by rock structure, rock quality, ground water conditions, blasting, pit geometry and excavation method. Of these factors, the control of ground water pressures often represents the primary tool to improve slope stability. Production equipment has recently been used to stabilize two slide areas by dewatering using blasthole drills for vertical holes and secondary drills for horizontal holes. This paper describes both of these dewatering programs and contrasts an earlier slope stabilization program that employed a subcontracted horizontal drill.

"HistoricalWHILE DIGGING caves and underground passages for living quarters, primitive man must have had some means of illumination. Most likely he used pieces of wood or slim bundles of reeds or grasses as torches, perhaps steeped in animal fats to give more light. If this is so, we may accept these as the first means of underground illumination. Very little was clone to improve lighting devices for many generations, but slowly there was developed a fount holding fatty oils, with a spout in which was inserted a form of wick.Actual mining. for metals first of all, was started about 3,000 B.C. Some of the old Greek and Roman records refer to the use of torches underground, and some evidence of clay lamps has been found. Candies came into use some time during the first century A.D. When coal mining began about the 14th Century in England, candles were used for illumination because of the ease of manufacturing and handling them. Open oil-lamps came into use early in the 16th century -Agricola, in his De Re .Metallica, written about 1540. pictures a miner with such a lamp. However, the expense of these was so great that candies still continued as the general means of underground lighting.Unfortunately, as miners went deeper underground, they encountered a mysterious gas which. upon coming in contact with open lights, flamed violently, resulting in explosions and accompanying loss of life. The first reference to the results of these gas explosions appeared in 1621. No help seemed to be available. The gas was given off when the coal was mined and the miners could not see without lamps. Attempts were made to use the phosphorescent glow from partly decayed fish, fish skins, and fungus, also to bring daylight clown into the workings by means of a series of • mirrors; •but these means of illumination proved to be impracticable."

A GREAT deal of time and energy is now being devoted to the study of post-war reconstruction and rehabilitation, in spite of the fact that as yet we have not won the war in which we are presently engaged. If you feel that the study of post-war problems takes our thought away from the problem immediately before us, you may well query, "Well! What has all that to do with winning the war, our most urgent problem today?" The answer has been given by Principal James of McGill University, Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Reconstruction: "Reconstruction is something which must be thought of in advance, partly for the purpose of recognizing exactly the influence of war-time activities, controls, and regulations on the post-war Canadian scene. Many people are acutely interested in this great problem. It is not that they are not interested in the war itself, or epochal events that are taking place from day to day. They have a vision of that future which they hope will be Canada's, and this vision inspires them to even greater efforts at the present time". The trend of events would indicate that changes, economic and industrial, after this war will be greatly out of line with those that followed previous wars in history, for the present struggle has involved every nation in the world. In the peace that will come, every engineer will have a task in bringing the most desirable order out of the most distressing chaos. We certainly are living in a changing world; we are witnessing geo-graphical and economic readjustments that no other generation in world's history has ever witnessed. And there is an opinion gaining strength in our Dominion, as in other lands, that after this war we shall live in a world in which our process of thinking and our very way of life will have to undergo drastic changes to cope with the new order of things. Sadly our world of today has had to revise the sublime vision that nation shall not lift up sword against nation, while salvage operations continue to beat ploughshares into tanks and the peaceful pruning-hook into a weapon for the deviltry of the commando.

lron oxides or the gangue minerals of iron ores can be made to float, depending upon the choice of collector. The selectivity of the separation is controlled by the accompanying chemical and operating conditions. In this report the findings on the general flotation characteristics of magnetite are summarized and the results are compared with those obtained for other iron oxides. Depending upon the choice of collector, either the iron oxides or the gangue minerals of iron ores can be made to float, the selectivity of the separation being controlled by the accompanying chemical and operating conditions. The mechanism by which a collector exerts preferential affinity for either group of minerals has been a subject of extended discussion. Previous investigations on the electrokinetic properties and flotation characteristics of hematite,' goethite,2 and quartz3 have demonstrated the electrical nature of the interaction of the collector with these oxide surfaces; anionic collectors are effective on positively charged surfaces and cationic collectors on negatively charged surfaces. Thus, from the differences in the electrokinetic properties of the above-named oxides, a theoretical basis has been provided for their separation by some typical collectors. Examination of the results reported for hematite and goethite shows that their electrokinetic properties and flotation characteristics are remarkably similar. It is of considerable interest, therefore, to examine similar information for magnetite, another common iron oxide, in order to consolidate the flotation characteristics of the three principal minerals of oxide iron ores. Such information is practically significant in the up-grading of both natural and artificial mag- netite produced from taconite, and in the treatment of partially oxidized magnetite ores. Information on maghemite and lepidocrocite, polymorphs of hematite, and goethite, respectively, is also of some theoretical interest in ascertaining the effects of crystal structure and of hydration in the iron oxide group. This article reports the findings on the general flotation characttxistics of magnetite, and compares the results with those obtained for other iron oxides. Experimentally, tlhe surface properties of magnetite were investigated by electrophoresis, and by measurement of the aclsorption of some typical flotation collectors. Its flotation behavior was tested by contact angle measurements and by simple flotation tests using a modified Hallimond tube. The basic information thus gathered was shown to be directly applicable to the interpretation of the results of batch flotation tests made on an artificial mixture of magnetite and quartz. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS Magnetite: Magnetite concentrate from Port Henry, N. Y., was further purified by fine crushing and magnetic separaiion, and was used throughout this investigation. For flotation tests the 150/200 mesh fraction was iso1ated and was cleaned by leaching briefly with warn 0.1 N HC1 followed by repeated washing with demineralized water. The final sample analyzed 71.71 pct Fe, 22.37 pct Fe" and 0.47 pct insoluble, and was stored in demineralized water. For e1ectrophoresis and adsorption measurements, the —400 mesh fraction of the magnetite concentrate was ground dry in a pebble mill. The surface area of the ground sample, as determined by the gas permeability method, was 70,000 sq cm per g. Since artificial magnetite has been reported to possess somewhat different physical properties than those of natural magnetite, it also was briefly examined. Preliminary flotation tests on a sample of artificial magnelite, prepared by reducing Brazilian hematite in a C0/CO2 mixture and analyzing 71.94 pct Fe and 23.78 pct Fe'', gave, however, nearly identical results with those using natural magnetite. PT Freeport IndonesiaÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine is the new underground block caving mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) which started production in mid-2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining method and will be the fourth underground mine opened within the EESS deposit. A review of the DOZ extraction bolting design was conducted in November 2000. The aim of this review was to re-evaluate the effectiveness of the current design in relation to bolt length and spacing and to challenge some questions about the technical background of the design. For instance, the influence of the rock condition on the design. To review this bolting design, several books and papers are reviewed and several experienced people have been contacted to give their opinion. The methodology used for this review is:reviewing the technical background of current design; collecting ideas and alternatives; collecting data from books and personal communication and conducting analysis; and conclusion and proposed design.

"The oxidized and mixed ores are processed by heap leaching. Primary ores with high gold content are floated. In recent years mining of primary ores with the low gold content (up to 4 ppm) has increased. Extraction of gold from these ores by floatation is technologically ineffective. Gravity concentration is ineffective for fine gold particles because of their floatability. The research objective was assessment of the viability of processing gold-bearing ore with combined gravitational and hydrometallurgical methods and testing of recovery of metals from a gold-copper oxidized ore chloride-hypochlorite leaching solution. The advantage of chloride-hypochlorite lixiviant is the low cost of reagents which is produced by the electrochemical synthesis of NaCl solution with the addition of HCl. The adsorption of chlorine compounds by a mineral matrix and its ability to oxidize the refractory ore components and allows for the application of chloride-hypochlorite systems for gold recovery for both oxidized and primary ores. The complexity and problem in using a gold–chloride system is the strong adsorption of gold–chloride complexes onto mineral surfaces, such as goethite, quartz, and alumina. In preliminary testing, gold recovery from gravity circuit gold bearing concentrates processed by agitation leaching in chloride-hypochlorite solution, gold recovery has reached up 82% after 4 hours of leaching. Chloride-hypochlorite leaching of copper-gold oxidized ore with preliminary processing by sulfuric acid provided for 94 % gold recovery to solution. Understanding of ecological hazard of cyanides is the motive power of researches in the field of search non-cyanic chemistries to provide for technologically and economically effective solvents of gold. Soluble compounds of chlorine with a suitable oxidizer are one of the alternatives to cyanides. Basic researches of gold extraction by chloride-hypochlorite solution have shown high rates of gold recovery.INTRODUCTION Because of the continued and growing environmental concern for the use of cyanide for gold processing, interest for the use of non-cyanide lixiviants, especially with halides has renewed recently (Tran et al., 2001; Ferron et al., 2003; Bhaghalha, 2007). Leaching solutions based on halides (chloride, bromide and iodide) are viable alternative to cyanide (Kwang et al., 2008). The major disadvantage of the chlorine–chloride system is the high reactivity of chlorine in reaction with sulfide and gangue carbonate minerals. It is believed that only high grade materials may be treated by chlorine–chloride systems economically (Baghalha, 2007). Another important problem of the application of gold–chloride complex is that it tends to be rather unstable and may re-precipitate upon contact with a reductant, such as sulfidic minerals of ore. It is well known that Au(III)–chloride hydrolysis species are strongly adsorbed by goethite, quartz, and alumina (Machfsky et al., 1991). To minimize adsorption of gold–chloro complexes, it works best to minimize the adsorption time."

Research objectives included 1) determine relationships if any between spectral response of soil and soil textural groups, Unified Soil Classification subgroups and selected landforms and 2) develop computer assisted techniques for engineering soils mapping of remotely sensed data. The sire in northeastern Kansas, 1.6 Km by 43 Km (1.0 mi by 27 mi), contained glacial and alluvial soils. Multispectral scanner data (0.40 to 1.80 pm) collected at 915 meters altitude (3,000 feet) were analyzed using two distinct computer techniques: the nonsupervised approach involving delineation of soil training areas directly by computer and the supervised approach entailing training area selection manually by the researcher. Computer classification of surface materials follows both methods. Non supervised analysis results failed to show a consistant relation- ship between landform type and soil spectral class. Landforms correlating well displayed either unusually bright or unusually dark spectral signatures. Supervised analysis results showed a strong relationship between soil texture and soil spectral class. A moderately strong tie was shown between engineering soils groups (ML, CL, CH and OH) and their respective spectral classes, and a weak association between landform type and soil spectral class. An analysis procedure for engineering soils mapping by computer of remotely sensed data was developed. 1. Locate cultural features by visual examination of imagery. 2. Produce generalized bare soil-vegetation- water map using nonsupervised technique. 3. Outline significant soil fields for computer training using supervised approach. 4. Computer-classify entire area based on these soil fields.

"Natural fibers, as a class of material, are attracting the interest of engineering sectors owing to specific advantages such as comparatively reduced cost and lower density as well as environmental benefits associated with renewability and biodegradability. For industrial applications, thermal properties, among others, are required. These are major requirements, especially in the case of an insulating natural fiber. In the present work, thermal properties of the curaua were investigated by photothermal techniques, i.e., the open photoacoustic cell and a method based upon the monitoring of the temperature evolution as a function of time. This investigation, in tum, permitted to evaluate two important thermal properties: the thermal diffusivity and the specific heat capacity of the curaua fibers. Indirectly, by means of simple mathematical relations, the thermal conductivity was also obtained. The results were compared with other materials and characterize the curaua fiber as an efficient insulator.IntroductionMaterials are gaining attention in recent years owing to their benefits for the environment as compared to synthetics. Being biodegradable, yearly renewable and recyclable, the natural planted-based are considered fully sustainable [1]. In particular, their life-cycle, from growing to industrial processing, absorbs as much C02 as it is emitted and makes them neutral with respect to greenhouse gases responsible for global warming [2]. Typical examples of these environmentfriendly materials are the lignocellulosic fibers that have been used in simple items such as ropes, baskets, textile, modest roofing, etc, since the beginning of our civilization [3]. In the past few decades, these natural fibers have been extensively investigated [ 4-1 O] as a possible reinforcement phase of polymer composites in substitution for synthetic fibers. In fact, engineering application of lignocellulosic composites are today in the market, especially in the automobile industry [11-13]. Out of the hundreds available natural fibers, only part of them exhibits superior properties to be qualified for composite reinforcement."

"Zimbabwe is endowed with rich deposits of minerals such as diamonds, platinum, coal, uranium, lithium, gold, antimony, iron, and chrome. Bioleaching has been implemented as an efficient and low-cost method to extract metals such as copper, cobalt, and gold from sulphide and/or ironcontaining ores and mineral concentrates in a number of countries around the globe. Zimbabwe, despite being a world leader in mineral wealth, has gone through years of economic stagnation which have brought with them energy shortages. Bioleaching is an innovative way to recover minerals from ores using relatively low-capital-cost and non-polluting technology. Principally, iron- and sulphur-oxidizing bacteria can be used to oxidize iron and sulphide to ferric iron and sulphuric acid, respectively, and the ferric iron oxidizes the insoluble metal sulphides to soluble metal sulphates that can be readily recovered from solution. Although some minerals such as gold are inert to biological reactions, they can be liberated using bacteria that act on certain types of ores and other minerals that co-occur with these minerals. The geology of the mineralized areas in Zimbabwe, rich in chalcopyrite / pyrite, allows a number of microorganisms to be used for the extraction of minerals by bio-oxidation. This paper reviews the potential of bioleaching in the country. IntroductionZimbabwe has rich deposits of minerals including diamonds, platinum, coal, uranium, lithium, gold, antimony, iron, and chrome. Bioleaching is defined as the use of microorganisms to facilitate the extraction of metals from sulphide or iron-containing ores or concentrates (Rawlings, 2004, 1997). Bioleaching has been shown to be an efficient (Blowes, Ptacek, and Jurjovec, 2003; Nordstrom and Southam, 1997; Schippers, 2004) and low-cost (Schippers et al., 2010) method to extract minerals in many countries around the globe. For example, aerobic Fe(II)- and sulphur-oxidizing bacteria have been shown to be up to two orders of magnitude more efficient in the oxidation of pyrite than the chemical processes (Blowes, Ptacek, and Jurjovec, 2003; Nordstrom and Southam, 1997; Schippers, 2004). Additionally, bioleaching can be used to extract minerals from low-grade ores, sulphidic waste rock dumps, and tailings efficiently (Schippers et al., 2010)."

ABSTRACT: The chicken and egg scenario — where adverse truck motions cause ground deterioration and poor ground profiles cause adverse truck motions — is a downward deterioration spiral dominating our industry. If we remove one action, the reaction stops. A simple truck to excavator load data analysis and wireless communication system is outlined, which will provide visual assistance to the excavator operator in achieving improved load placement and balance in a truck body. This will reduce subsequent hauler duty cycle adverse motions and g levels that contribute to structural fatigue, higher tkph, reduced tire life, and ongoing maintenance of haul roads.

Cooling staves in blast furnaces are used to minimize the process heat loads on steel shell and refractory system. Copper staves are exposed to significant fluctuating thermal loads which may lead to premature stave failures due to cracks, water leakage, bending, abrasion and resultant wear. In this paper, an assessment methodology is presented to evaluate the effect of thermal cycling on copper staves including bending, fatigue and thermal ratcheting. This approach incorporates temperature-dependent copper properties including creep and plasticity to more accurately capture inelastic deformations, damage and fatigue in staves under transient and cyclic thermal loading conditions. Root cause failure assessment and improvements to copper stave design can be assessed using the presented methodology.

And since its acquisition of Bucyrus in 2011, Caterpillar has positioned itself to become a worldwide leader in the underground mining sector as well.But don’t think that the company is resting on its reputation. As evidence of its commitment to the global mining sector, as well as its confidence in the future of mining, Caterpillar invited mining trade press, including Mining Engineering, to its Tinaja Hills Training Center near Tucson, AZ in November to introduce the latest editions to its mining portfolio. The two-day event focused mostly on the newest electric drive haul trucks, the Cat 796 AC, which will operate in the 326-t (360-st) class, and the 798 AC in the 360 t (400 st) weight class.Caterpillar representatives also spoke about new offerings in the underground space as well as the newest version of the D11 large dozer.“It has been 10 years since we launched the F Series,” Jean Savage, Caterpillar’s vice president, surface mining and technology said. “Since then, we have been on a journey to serve our mining customers and we wanted to have trucks in every application. Today, we are launching two new trucks that will allow us to fill out our portfolio.”While Caterpillar previously offered the broadest range of off-highway haul trucks to the mining industry, it was noticeably absent from the 326-t (360- st) and 360-t (400-st) weight classes."

Introduction The writer was instructed to visit the Chibougamau region during the field season of 1927 and report on the mineral discoveries that had been made there since 1911. lt was deemed advisable to obtain detailed information regarding the rocks underlying the area in the vicinity of these recent discoveries. Accordingly an area 60 square miles in extent was mapped. The outcrops were studied along the water courses and along bush traverses spaced at half-mile intervals between these water courses. The completion of the rest of the summer's programme allowed only three weeks for this work. lt is from this small, mapped area, and this necessarily cursory survey, that the material for this paper was obtained. Location And Means Of Access The name Chibougamau district is applied loosely to an ill-defined area of about 1,000 square miles lying mostly north and west of Chibougamau lake in the Province of Quebec. The lake is approximately half way between lake St. John and James bay. It lies 150 miles north of the Canadian National railway and 40 miles south of Mistassini?lake.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream pH is very important in leach mining and treatment of MIW (mining influenced water). On the production side, solution acidity can impact SX (solvent extraction) effectiveness through PLS (pregnant leach solution) and raffinate pH. Many older operations and legacy mining sites generate ARD (acid rock drainage) that is too weak for profitable metal production by conventional means and faces costly wastewater treatment for mitigation and disposal. For wastewater and environmental treatment, neutralization to precipitate and remove metal contaminants to clean the wastewater is the dominant approach. Traditional lime neutralization and precipitation is most often used but results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS); which focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources, has developed a new “reagentless” neutralization process. Electricity is utilized in its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform capability to controllably raise target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost approach yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. It can result in less sludge generation and enables possibilities to selectively recover contaminants as potentially saleable products for new revenue generation to offset further offset treatment costs. A model is being developed to quantify the benefits for mining houses resulting from the reduction in greenhouse gas and energy consumption by the application of innovative blast designs in addition to direct financial benefits throughout the mine to mill value chain. The conversion from shock tube initiation systems to electronics and some changes to powder factor measured on an open pit mine had previously been used to show significant improvement on blast outputs. Benefits were realised on drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and beneficiation. Quantification of the relationship between powder factor and reduced greenhouse gasses is investigated in this study. The study has highlighted new data that must be recorded and hence some assumptions were made as to fuel consumption and the energy in crushing was obtained from the Bond work equation. The mine to mill projects in an open pit platinum mine and a quarry produced energy savings and reduced greenhouse gas emissions associated with the careful application of explosives and blast innovations. The less fines project showed an increased carbon footprint. The model provides a new insight into how project feasibility should be decided based on economic and environmental viability.

"The Waihi Gold Mine (WGM) operated by OceanaGold New Zealand Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the OceanaGold Corporation of Australia. Traditionally WGM has stockpiled and processed separate campaigns of open pit and underground ore. The ore is processed via a conventional semi-autonomous grinding (SAG) / ball circuit (SABC). The low aspect SAG mill operates in a closed circuit with two 20" cyclones, whilst the ball mill is also a closed circuit with a 10" cyclone cluster. A major wall movement in April 2015 ceased open pit operations indefinitely, 18 months ahead of the mining plan. This immediately reduced the forecast mill tonnage leaving two options: begin campaign milling or change the operating strategy and target lower throughput. Additional cost pressures necessitated improved milling cost efficiency. The immediate ore restriction limited processing alternatives to within the existing major infrastructure. Available comminution circuit survey data laid the foundation for developing a comminution model using the JKSimMet™ software package (version 6, created by KJTech). A number of flow sheet variants were then evaluated based on predicted throughput and efficiency. The comminution models suggested opportunities for improved efficiency lay in reducing throughput and increasing utilisation rather than on/off campaign milling under the existing operating philosophy. A series of process alterations followed, delivering new cost efficiencies that maintained the current $/t processing cost. Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. concluded an exchange of land and reserves in an agreement signed May 3, 1999.This exchange of assets allowed Newmont to develop the Deep Post underground mine from within Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit, thus reducing capital expenditures, lowering operating costs, and advancing the production schedule by nearly three years. Based on previous experience, Newmont is confident that the Deep Post underground mine can be successfully developed and operated within a large, active, open pit mine. The project also faces difficult geotechnical conditions including weak ground, scattered pockets of groundwater, and elevated rock temperatures.
