The dissolution behaviour of ilmenite in acid solutions has been studied by many researchers to improve the leaching efficiency. Most studies which utilized natural ilmenite from different origins resulted in different reactivity due to the alteration caused by the weathering process. Previous researchers have suggested that the greater reactivity shown by some ilmenite samples towards sulphuric acid may be a result of the mineral being relatively unaltered. In the present study a rotating synthetic ilmenite disc of 2.2 cm diameter was subjected to leaching studies in hydrochloric acid. The dissolution rates of iron and titanium from synthetic ilmenite were determined in hydrochloric acid solutions (4 M to 9 M) over a temperature range of 50 to 80°C. Results show that the rate of dissolution of both iron and titanium increased with the increase in acid concentration. However, the rates decreased with time and obeyed a parabolic rate law indicating the blockage of the surface by an insoluble product. The rates of dissolution of both iron and titanium were higher in the presence of SnCl2 and remained unaffected with time indicating the reductive role of SnCl2 which inhibits the formation of surface blocking solids. Application to natural ilmenite is also discussed.

A flotação é uma técnica de separação baseada na afinidade das espécies minerais com as moléculas de água. Na flotação reversa de minério de ferro, utilizam-se os compostos químicos da família das aminas primárias (R-NH2), que são moléculas compostas por uma parte apolar (R), formada por uma cadeia carbônica, e por outra polar, constituída por grupos amina (NH3), os quais ao serem protonadas, adsorvem-se fisicamente sobre a superfície negativa das partículas de quartzo, tornando-as hidrofóbicas. O poder de “hidrofobização” das aminas está diretamente relacionado ao tamanho de sua cadeia carbônica, sendo o limitante desta grandeza a sua solubilidade em água. Dentro desse contexto e a fim de aumentar o poder “hidrofobizante” do coletor, foram realizados testes laboratoriais, utilizando soluções formadas por diferentes proporções de amina e óleo diesel para avaliar o impacto da dosagem da mistura (óleo diesel + amina) sobre o consumo de coletor e a seletividade da flotação dos finos da Mina Casa de Pedra concluindo-se que a utilização da mistura de óleo diesel + amina não prejudica o desempenho da flotação, abrindo espaço para uma redução de quase 7% do consumo de amina, insumo mais caro que o óleo diesel.

China?s remarkable levels of economic growth during the past three decades have lifted almost 300 million people out of poverty. This amazing achievement has placed an increasing demand on energy and minerals, especially coal, which supplies 68.7 percent of China?s energy (June 2011). It is estimated that China mined more than 3 Gt (3.3 billion st) of coal in 2010, three times as much when compared to merely 10 years earlier. Such an impressive achievement does not come without major costs ?? including concerns with mine safety and an increasing number of occupational illnesses due to fast growth. This article reports on one of the major safety concerns in China?s coal mining, dust and dust control practices, and known cases of caol worker?s pneumoconiosis affiliated with prolonged exposure to excessive coal dusts. The exact size of China?s mining industry is not known, but it is estimated the coal industry is at least five-million people strong, and the metal and nonmetals industry probably employs another three million people. To meet increasing energy demand, China mined more than 3.1 Gt (3.4 billion st) of coal in 2010 from its 15,000 plus coal operations1, most of which are small- to medium-sized operations with annual coal productions ranging from a few thousand tons to 300 kt (330,000 st). These small coal operations are typically in remote areas, inadequately engineered, poorly ventilated and still using rudimentary drilling and blasting mining methods employing antiquated mining equipment and, presenting safety concerns, i.e., methane and dust explosions.

In the vast majority of American coal mines, roof bolt holes are drilled dry, mainly because of mine operator concern with the spent water creating adverse working conditions. Wet drilling, however, can increase drilling rates and the effective lifetime of the drill bits used. This study, carried out as part of an ongoing cooperative research program between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Missouri-Rolla, shows that the large volumes of water conventionally used in wet drilling are not necessary, and the performance benefits from wet drilling can be achieved with total volume flows on the order of 0.4 L per hole. This conclusion is validated based on the measured respirable dust generated in drilling Berea sandstone. The results are confirmed using a variety of bit shapes, which are also shown to have a significant effect on penetration rate.

The analytical results of Dagushan grinding workshop primary grinding operation product show that the size fraction of -0.079mm is 32.88%, the size fraction of -0.01mm is 9.97%, the rate of -0.01mm size fraction and -0.079mm size fraction is 30.32%. It means that there is too much -0.01mm size fraction in primary grinding operation product and fall out that there will not be a better result in following operations. Several tests have been carried out to control the size distributing of the primary grinding operation product according to confirm the appropriate conditions of grinding operation. Integrate with theoretic count, grinding property tests show that the appropriate rev ratio of ball mill should be between 85% and 90% so as to get better size distributing. Based on the results of grinding property tests, the shocking property tests simulated the momentum of different diameter steel balls in the ball mill have been carried out. It showed that if want to get better size distributing the appropriate diameter of steel ball should be 110mm. The tests result shows that regulate diameter of steel ball and rev ratio of ball mill could control the size distributing. Contrast to the technical parameters of ball mill in grinding operation now, there are some significant advices are given for practice and industrial tests.

Limit Analysis Theorems has revealed to be a powerful tool for the development of numerical models aiming the determination of the load bearing capacity of structures reached by plastic collapse. This work presents a numerical formulation for the computation of strict upper bounds of the collapse loads of rigid-perfectly plastic mechanical systems, derived within the kinematical theorem framework. A key advance of this present method is that the problem is described only in terms of nodes and discontinuities connecting those nodes rather than element or bodies. The alternative approximation procedure to the traditional finite element method might involve discretization of a given body using a suitably large number of nodes laid out on a grid, with the failure mechanism comprising the most critical subset of potential discontinuities interconnecting these nodes. Potential discontinuities which interlink nodes laid out across the problem domain are permitted to crossover one another, giving a much wider search space than when such discontinuities are located only at the edges of finite elements of fixed topology. Highly efficient interior point method solvers can be employed when certain popular failure criteria are specified (e.g. Mohr-Coulomb). By adopting this processing approach it is possible to solve very large problems which normally exceed the memory capacities of a single computer. The developed numerical tool reveals to be robust and versatile, able to solve a wide range of 2D problems. Velocity singularities are automatically identified and visual interpretation of the output is straightforward. Several numerical examples including rock slope are studied by the new method, and the results are very close to those calculated by using analytical method and FEM.

The threat of rock bursts along with the danger from methane gas and coal dust explosions belongs to particularly dangerous phenomena in Polish pit-coal mines. This phenomenon results mainly from the physical-mechanical properties of the rock mass as well as the geological-tectonic structure of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. In the postwar years in Polish coal mining thanks to a multi- directional activity, a decrease of rock bursts and their effects has been noted. For example, the number of rock bursts reported in 1965 amounted to 71 in comparison to only 23 in 1974. The ratio of rock bursts calculated for 100,000 tons of coal extracted from rock bursting strata amounted to 0.08 in 1965; however, in 1974 it amounted to 0.023 /Fig. 1/. These results were obtained in face of a continually growing potential threat from rock bursts caused by the systematic increase of extraction from rock bursting strata, exploitation at gradually greater depths along with the extension of exploitation into deposits enclosed in different types of pillars and other parts of deposits surrounded by workings. Despite the achievements of science and mining practice in this field, this threat has not yet been fully studied and controlled as it should be, As a result, research on preventing rock bursts is being continually widened in Poland. This research has a complex, multi-staged and long-range character. Theory, laboratory and field work in the mines are working on a solution to the problem.

INTRODUCTION The particular field of application of machines utilizing air currents as the primary separating medium is in the cleaning of the fine sizes of bituminous coal. Approximately 25,400,000 tons of bituminous coal were cleaned by air machines during 1965. They have not found any application for cleaning anthracite. Since the development and introduction of the first successful commercial pneumatic oscillating machine for cleaning bituminous coal in 19 16, by the Sutton, Steele and Steele Co, Dallas, Texas, and the American Coal Cleaning Corporation, formerly of Welch, W. Va., seven other successful pneumatic coal-cleaning machines have been developed and introduced to the American coal-mining industry: 1. Peale Davis: "Pneumo-Gravity" machine. 2. Arms "Concentrator," oscillating table. 3. Hey1 and Patterson oscillating table. 4. "Stump Air-Flow," pulsating air jig. 5. "Super Airflow," pulsating air jig. 6. Ridge air jig. 7. Phillip air jig. While not all coals can be beneficiated by air washing, the air washing of coals that are easy to clean can be readily proved advantageous. Of all the preparation methods, pneumatic cleaning is the most acceptable from the standpoint of delivered Btu cost. This is based on the premise that a percent of moisture is just as detrimental as a percent of ash. The principle of dry concentration has never been determined with scientific accuracy. To the present time the study has been more of an art than a science. It is possible to forecast the results of wet concentration from a study of the washability characteristics of the raw coal but only after applying rule-of-thumb methods of interpretation to the specific gravity and size distribution can it be ascertained that the raw coal is amenable to dry concentration. Air as a separating medium dates back to biblical times as exemplified in the winnowing of chaff from the grain. However, the same application of air to coal serves merely to blow the dust away and size the remaining particles. Pulsating air was the solution to the problem and largely eliminated the necessity for close screen sizing which was required on early separators. Because of the low density of air, a medium of sufficient density has to be built with the material itself. "The deep-buried rock surrounding the Jinping II Hydro-power Station was taken as the engineering background. Using model specimens of classified rock materials to simulate fractured rock mass under high in-situ stress conditions, the test about acoustic propagation law on single fracture model of specimen under different pressures and different angles were carried out. The variation of p-wave velocity in fractured rock mass and axial stress-strain relationship in the whole test procedure was also studied. Based on damage mechanics principle and the acoustic wave propagation in cracked rock mass, comparative study on damage constitutive relation of fractured rock mass under high in-situ stress in consideration of equivalent strain and equivalent energy was performed. As the results showed, with the change of axial stress level under constant confining pressure, the change in wave velocity can be divided into three stages: slow increase (small variation in amplitude), rapid reduce (large variation in amplitude ) and accelerate reduction. When the confining pressure is constant, the maximum p-wave velocity and the peak strength of specimens increases with the decrease of the crack angle.When the crack angle is constant, the maximum p-wave velocity and the peak strength of specimens increases with the increase of confining pressure.It is identified that the theoretical calculation results of constitutive relation about elasto-plastic damage model containing variable wave velocity in the fractured rock mass is consistent with the model test results.Therefore,the constitutive relation can provide reasonable suggestions for engineering practice. INTRODUCTIONThere are a lot of joints and fractures in surrounding rock mass of deep-lying in the Jinping-II hydropower station, which has a great influence on the physical and mechanical properties of rocks and effects the acoustic wave propagation and attenuation law in rock. Many previous research and project examples has proved that sound propagation parameters are closely related to crack and stress condition. Thus, it has certain theoretical significance and practical application value to carry out researches on sound propagation characteristics and establish damage constitutive model of fractured rock mass which is related to sound propagation parameters."

Today’s lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) are found in more than half of the hybrid-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on the marked, all-electric vehicles, and nearly all consumer electronics. As a result, recycling of LiBs will be a strategic necessity in the near future. In the present study, the feasibility of application of conventional aluminum recycling process (secondary aluminum production) as a suitable process for treatment of LiBs was studied. The overall idea is to recover aluminum, copper and lithium from a mixed waste stream of LiBs and aluminum scrap. A two-stage process, consisting of a preheating step and a melting step, were tested on cell phone batteries mixed with pure aluminum in a ratio 1:10 and the distribution of elements between the metal phase and the slag phase evaluated. O antracito é um dos tipos de combustíveis utilizados no processo de pelotização. Estudos de caracterização desses materiais realizados no CTF-Vale indicaram muitos casos de antracitos contaminados com carvões betuminosos. O objetivo desse estudo é avaliar como essa contaminação pode afetar a qualidade das pelotas queimadas e também o manuseio desses combustíveis. Para este desenvolvimento alguns antracitos, com diferentes níveis de contaminação, foram caracterizados química, física, petrográfica e mineralogicamente e seus desempenhos foram avaliados em plantas piloto de pelotização. De acordo com os resultados, quanto maior o grau de contaminação de antracitos com carvões minerais pior a qualidade física das pelotas queimadas. Em casos extremos, quando os antracitos foram contaminados com maiores teores de carvões alto-voláteis as pelotas se desintegraram durante os pot grate tests. Observou-se também que a contaminação afeta negativamente os principais parâmetros que influenciam o manuseio de combustíveis, que são umidade, distribuição granulométrica e composição mineralógica.

O objetivo do estudo é avaliar o efeito do teor de elementos intersticiais no envelhecimento por deformação do aço ao carbono SAE 1010 submetido ao processo de laminação a frio para a produção de vergalhão. Foram selecionadas duas bobinas de fio-máquina, emprego para a produção do CA-60, com teores distintos de elementos intersticiais. As bobinas foram processadas no laminador a frio para a produção do vergalhão CA-60 Reto bitola 5 mm e o envelhecimento foi avaliado através de variações no limite de escoamento obtidos por ensaio de tração uniaxial, realizados em tempos distintos após a deformação. A composição com alto teor de elementos intersticiais apresentou aumento significativo do limite de escoamento com o tempo quando comparada com a bobina com teores mais baixos desses elementos. Esta última, no período de acompanhamento não mostrou variação expressiva. A análise quantitativa, através de ensaios massivos para cada condição pode ser uma ferramenta útil para estudar o fenômeno

In 1911 the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines instructed the chief mining engineer of the bureau , during an investigation of coal-mine safety conditions in Europe, to ask the directors of the various mine-experiment stations whether they would favor a European conference . The majority of the officials in immediate charge of experiment stations favored the plan , and Victor Watteyne, inspector general of Belgium, suggested that the United States call such a conference to be held immediately after the Eighth International Congress of Applied Chemistry, which was to assemble in New York on September 3, 1912 . Accordingly, invitations were issued by the United States Government to those countries having mine-experiment stations , namely, Austria-Hungary, Belgium, France, Germany , and Great Britain, and to those that contemplated the establishment of such stations , Canada and Mexico . All but Great Britain and Canada accepted ; Mexico designated a representative , who later found it impossible to come. The Government of Great Britain in declining, expressed regret at its inability to accept ; an informal statement was made that the opening of the experimental gallery at Eskmeals , England , occupied the attention of the officials in charge . Delegates were appointed by their respective Governments as follows: Austria-Hungary, Julian Czaplinski , royal mining engineer. Belgium, Victor Watteyne , inspector general of mines . France, J. Taffanel, director of the Lievin experiment station . Germany, Carl Beyling, bergassessor, director of Dortmund experiment station. United States , Charles E. Munroe, consulting explosives expert and George S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines . Subsequently Mr. William O'Connor , a mining engineer and mine operator of Wales , who opportunely appeared at the Pittsburgh station with letters of introduction from the South Wales Institute of Engineers and from prominent mining officials of Great Britain , was unanimously invited to take part in the meeting as an unofficial representative of Great Britain . Messrs . Beyling, Taffanel , and Watteyne were met in New York on September 3, by George S. Rice, who accompanied them to Washington, where they were welcomed by Director J. A. Holmes , of the Bureau of Mines , and where , with the delegates to the Eighth International Congress of Applied Chemistry , they were presented to President Taft . Mr. Taffanel was unfortunately called back to France just before the scheduled time of the conference on account of a mine disaster ; the other delegates , including Mr. Czaplinski , convened at Pittsburgh on the morning of September 14. Mr. Rice, representing the Director of the Bureau of Mines , acted as temporary chairman , and called the meeting to order.

A fabricação de matrizes para forjamento a quente vem sendo estudada com maior atenção nos últimos anos devido à necessidade de fabricação das ferramentas com maior rapidez e menor custo, estudo do processo de usinagem, com melhores propriedades mecânicas a fim de aumentar sua vida útil. Para atender as atuais necessidades do mercado são utilizados softwares de CAD e CAM e principalmente de máquinas CNC, que além da rapidez garantem a qualidade da usinagem das matrizes. O objetivo deste artigo é demonstrar, através de um estudo de caso, as etapas para a fabricação das matrizes superior e inferior, para forjamento a quente. Foram utilizados sistemas de CAD e CAM, o SolidWorks para modelagem da peça e das cavidades da ferramenta, e o software Edgecam para a programação e simulação da usinagem. As facilidades obtidas com a integração entre os sistemas CAD/CAM e máquina CNC conferem a manufatura de ferramentas muitos benefícios, dentre eles destaca-se a rapidez com a qual se pode fabricar uma matriz.

Este trabalho estuda o fenômeno da erosão e a validação de um erosímetro. Com este propósito, as taxas de erosão, perda de massa acumulada por unidade de área e o fator de esfericidade foram medidos. Os testes foram realizados com corpos de prova de latão 360 CLA, efetuando quatro testes com durações de 5, 10, 15 e 20 horas, respectivamente. As amostras foram pesadas em uma balança de precisão antes e após os testes. O abrasivo utilizado foi a areia ABNT em uma concentração de 10% em peso. O impacto repetitivo entre as partículas abrasivas causou trincas, lascamentos e, consequentemente, a formação de partículas menores. Também foi constatado o arredondamento das partículas abrasivas. Tais fatos são a causa do decréscimo da taxa de erosão com o aumento do tempo de teste. Micrografias apresentam a degradação da superfície na parte frontal do corpo de prova devido à remoção de material. O erosímetro obteve sucesso nas comparações com outros artigos.

Aços assistido pelo efeito TRIP (Transformation Induced Plasticity) com alto teor de Al estão sendo desenvolvidos com grande potencial de se tornarem aços de terceira geração para aplicações no setor automotivo. Assim, por ainda estarem na fase de desenvolvimento, estudos sobre esses materiais são de extrema relevância. Este trabalho buscou correlacionar a influência da laminação a frio e recozimento intercrítico, em uma liga de aço TRIP com elevado teor de Al, com o comportamento da liga face as análises de transformações de fase via Calorimetria Diferencial de Varredura (DSC), identificação de fases e textura da matriz ferrítica via Difração de Raios X (DRX) e aspecto microestrutural via Microscopia Óptica (MO). O processamento termomecânico adotado, com distintas temperaturas de encharque no recozimento intercrítico, não influenciaram a textura cristalográfica da liga, entretanto, distintos percentuais de austenita retida foram verificados para cada condição, sendo o maior valor observado para a temperatura de 820 ºC.

O presente estudo foi realizado com o intuito de determinar parâmetros microestruturais que definem os comportamentos eletroquímico e elétrico de uma célula a combustível do tipo óxido sólido, SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell). A caracterização microestrutural foi realizada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, possibilitando a revelação de particularidades dos microconstituintes como porosidade, tamanho médio de grão e suas distribuições. As micrografias obtidas foram submetidas à análise digital de imagens, obtendo assim a quantificação de propriedades das microestruturas dos eletrodos (catodo e anodo) e do eletrólito. A análise de microscopia revelou a presença de uma camada de pequena espessura (interlayer) de céria dopada com gadolínio localizada entre o eletrólito e o catodo. O eletrólito exibiu grãos com uma tendência equiaxial, com tamanho médio de grão de 3,43 µm. O anodo apresentou um gradiente de porosidade, não alcançando a porcentagem de porosidade ideal para que a difusão de gases ocorra de maneira eficiente. A região catódica demonstrou valores de porosidade em conformidade com o recomendado na literatura.

O trabalho enfoca: 1. a mudança cultural - que vem sendo continuamente trabalhada com as equipes e tem reforçado princípios como o senso de propriedade, autonomia e integração; 2. o incentivo ao intercâmbio entre funções - contribuindo para que as atividades da operação e manutenção fossem conhecidas por todos; 3. alterações na rotina, com a introdução de reuniões, inspeções e relatórios compartilhados - para melhor troca de informações entre as equipes de operação e manutenção; 4. mudança na localização física das equipes - com a acomodação das equipes de operação e manutenção mais próximas entre si e dos equipamentos; e por fim, 5. a implantação da manutenção autônoma - com a capacitação e realização de intervenções de manutenção pelos operadores. Com a melhoria da integração têm sido obtidos resultados expressivos de segurança, estabilidade operacional e custo.

Together with Sociedad Punta del Cobre S.A. (Pucobre) and Orica, we are carrying out a study of alternatives for methodology of excavation in Slot Up Raises from actually built with Blind Hole (BH) to drilling and blasting (DB) methodology. The study is part of the permanent search for innovation, the use of technology and the reduction of mine operation costs. This application aims to optimize the Sub Level Stoping method, which has historically been exploited at Pucobre. Using a new variant of the method “Open Stoping”, through the initial development of ascending blind raises using a pilot drilling of a bore hole, with the objective of eliminating the upper level in order to excavate the free face opening. This industrial test aims to replace the mechanized BH Up Raise of 1.5m (4.9 ft.) in diameter and 30m (98.4 ft.) high, with a Up Slot Raise considering two separate blasting events, using different technological enablers, as detailed below: accuracy drilling with relief holes of 254mm (10 in.) diameter, high viscosity bulk emulsion, wireless initiation system and high-strength injectable bulk resin. Considering the importance of the success of this application, a DB diagram was defined to allow the opening of the up raise in two blasting events, separated by intermediate stemming deck located at the same level at a height of 15m (49.2 ft.) from the collar, using high-strength injectable resin. The first blasting event considers the first section from the collar to the first 15m (49.2 ft.), using wired electronic initiation that is detonated on the first day. A second event blasts the section from 16.5 to 30m (54.1 to 98.4 ft.), using a wireless initiation system, as, it has no physical connection, is blasted on the second day after the extraction of the material resulting from the first event. For greater precision, the design of the explosive charge configuration and initiation sequence is made, adjusted to the measurements of trajectory deviations of the actual ground drilling and is also considered for the control of the explosive charge configuration with high viscosity bulk emulsion. This application improves the profitability of the mining business by generating savings through the change of Blind Hole methodology, estimating a savings of more than 75% per Up Slot Raise

The Republic of Botswana, one of the newer countries of southern Africa, attained independence on September 30, 1966. It covers an area of about 225,000 square miles (582,000 square kilometers) which makes it slightly larger than France, or slightly smaller than Texas. It is bounded by Zimbabwe, the Republic of South Africa and Namibia, including the Caprivi Strip. Angola and Zambia are close neighbors. (Map 1). Botswana lies at the center of the southern African plateau at a mean elevation of 3,300 feet (1,000 m). It is a natural habitat for most species of African fauna. The rolling sands and extensive grasslands of the Kalahari Desert cover the southwest. The climate is sub- tropical. Summers, although tempered by north- easterly breezes, are hot, but mean maximum temperature seldom rises above 100°F (38°C). Winters are dry with wide temperature variations, which often give rise to frosts.
