The purpose of this paper is to point out some of the benefits and economies to be derived by the better selection , preparation, storage , preservation and utilization of mine timber , and to give some specific information on certain wood preservatives and processes suitable for mine timber preservation . The paper is based largely upon data obtained by actual experimentation and service tests conducted by the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory , Madison, Wisconsin, on wood preservation , covering a period of many years , and upon a field survey during the past summer by one of the mining engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines of some of the principal mining districts of Michigan , South Dakota , Montana , and Idaho , in which he made a general ' study of mine timber in metal mines , particular attention "being given to timber decay ; the conditions under which it takes place most actively ; the measures , if any , that are being used to combat it; and, finally, the advantages that might be anticipated in the use of chemically treated timber to prevent decay and thus prolong its life .

The process of liquid?liquid extraction of gold from chloride solution is complicated by the presence of many variables acting simultaneously in an unknown non-linear fashion for the determination of the final extraction efficiency. In practice, it is quite difficult to develop a model for predicting various properties of such process. Therefore, an alternative approach based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is considered to assist in the simulation process. Artificial neural networks (ANN) are powerful tools that can be used to model and investigate various highly complex and non-linear phenomena. This paper presents application of Multi-Layer Perceptions (MLP) to construct relationship that will be employed to develop a quantitative method for the estimation of the extraction efficiency as a function of hydrodynamical parameters such as stirrer speed, [AuCl4]- and DBC concentration, organic and aqueous flow rate. The model is shown to be in excellent agreement with the experimental data (R2 value for training and testing data was 0.9992 and 0.9915 respectively). Therefore, it can be used to optimize the parameters of liquid?liquid gold extraction with dibutyl carbitol (DBC).

Bureau of Mines research in in situ uranium leaching includes injection well construction and environmental aspects. Clogging of injection wells is a common problem, and is affected by construction techniques. Part of the clogging can be caused by a low-permeability skin left on the borehole wall if the drilling fluids are not thoroughly flushed out. Certain polymer drilling fluids are less prone to cause clogging than bentonite muds, since a lower solids content can be used. The environmental research primarily involves two contracts. The first describes the environmental impact of in situ leaching and the effect of environmental legislation on leaching; the second describes the cost effectiveness of various methods of restoring ground water quality.

This paper compares the ash slagging potential of Illinois No. 6 seam coal as raw coal, as commercially cleaned coal processed in a baum-jig plant, and as coal cleaned to a reduced ash specification at the Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) Coal Cleaning Test Facility. The comparison is based on ASTM ash fusibility data, a slagging index, gravity fractionation analyses of critical mineral matter compounds, and comparative pilot combustion tests. The first three grounds of comparison are laboratory data. The final comparison involves burning about 13.6 t (15 st) of each coal at Conoco's 4.40-kW/h (1.5 million-Btu per hr) test combustor. The evidence of these four comparisons indicates that lowering the ash specification of coal before combustion can significantly improve the ash slagging characteristics of Illinois No. 6 seam coal.

Lithium battery electric powered vehicles and machines (BEVs) continue to gain traction inunderground mining use, with predictions they will dominate the underground light and heavy vehicle fleets for some mines within the next decade. There are clear advantages for ventilation systems through reduced heat output and the elimination of harmful exhaust gases and diesel particulates. However, the risks and effects of BEV fire emergencies for underground personnel and ventilationsystems are still largely in the early stages of analysis and understanding. This paper conducts an industry review of a selection of lithium battery fire incidents and research.A research paper review on lihthium fire behaviour, intensity and toxicity will be analysed and comparisons made with equivalent diesel machinery fires for context. Guidelines for mine firemodelling parameters will be offered to assist in predicting the behaviour, heat and emissions from BEV fires, and recommendations and conclusions will be drawn on the specific hazards of lithium battery fires compared to conventional diesel powered machines.

"Water is a primary commodity for most industrial processes. It has become a global focus in light of climate change and population growth. Reuse of process water has two major benefits - minimize the amount of fresh water added now and minimize the amount of discharge water that requires treatment later.Mining and mine product processing has its share of reused water. For example, reclaim water from a tailings impoundment, overflow from thickeners and leach solution to raffinate and back again all demonstrate the use and reuse of water in mining circuits. Eventually, a mine reduces production or ceases operations completely, eliminating the option to reuse the impacted water and, thus, requires treatment of the remaining water.Current methods of water treatment remove the impacts, providing clean water for discharge, but leaves behind a concentrated waste that requires further treatment or disposal of a hazardous waste. Freeport- McMoRan is currently testing three water treatment technologies specific for sulfate and/or metal removal from mine impacted water with the approach of transformation not concentration. These technologies provide clean water for alternative use while creating byproducts that could be marketable, or disposed as a nonhazardous material, thereby reducing the cost and longterm liability of disposal.The selection of a water treatment process is site-specific. The volume of water, contaminant to be removed, disposal options, length of time for treatment, location of plant and reagents and discharge requirements are some of the factors that need to be considered when selecting a water treatment process. Common water treatment technologies for mine impacted water consist of low- or high-density sludge (LDS/ HDS), reverse osmosis (RO) and evaporative technologies. In addition to operating costs, these processes require additional handling of the concentrated sludge or brine. Advanced water treatment technologies include ion exchange, solvent extraction and metals precipitation with or without the aid of a biological system. Some of the more complex systems have a series of unit operations to achieve required discharge regulations."

The Cuyuna range, located in east-central Minnesota, consists of a sequence of argillite, siltstone, iron-formation, graywacke, slate, and quartzite of early Proterozoic age. Manganese-bearing materials occur within the iron-rich strata of the Trommald Formation and the Rabbit Lake Formation. Computer-assisted resource estimates, based on exploration drill hole information, indicate that the Cuyuna range contains a minimum of 176 million metric tons (Mt) of marginally economic manganiferous rock with an average grade of 10.50 weight percent manganese. The calculated 18.5 Mt of manganese on the Cuyuna range could supply this country's needs for this important and strategic metal for 16 years. An additional resource of 6.9 Mt of manganese metal is available in the lower grade deposits. The majority of these calculated resources are extractable by current surface mining techniques.

Current operations were on a marginal economic basis, and government aid was sought in an endeavor to outline ore reserves so that production might be maintained.

"Indonesia is the second largest coal exporter to Japan, accounting for about 30 Mt annually. They produced over 400 Mt in 2015, over 99% of which is from open-cut mines. However, the conditions of surface mining are becoming worse year by year: the stripping ratio is increasing, the economy is worsening, and the infrastructure for coal transportation from inland mining areas is not being maintained. To meet the demand for coal in Indonesia and the rest of the world, underground mines have to be developed. In consideration of growing need, our research program is conducting a study on the potential for an underground coal mine in Indonesia. This research is being done through the roadway heading research program, which is looking into developing an underground coal mine from an open pit highwall. The greatest challenge for underground coal mine development in Indonesia is the maintaining the safety of the mine roadway during heading because the roof rock is exceptionally weaker. There is a potential for heading below mobile, unconsolidated soft sediment, and instead mining a deep area. This increases the likelihood for problems in the stability of the support system due to increasing ground pressure. The ground behavior around the roadway was measured using telltales, extensometers, and convergence measurements. Moreover, rock property tests were also conducted on exploration drilling cores. Based on the geological dates and monitoring data, a series of numerical analyses were conducted in order to assess support needs in the main roadway under different depths. Results of numerical analyses indicate that the current arch support design is effective when the mining depth is lower than 100m. However, if the mining depth is larger than 100m, the current arch support design should be changed to include the application of higher yield strength material, shorter spacing, etc. Moreover, bolting may also be useful if ground pressure is high locally. Based on a series of measurement data of ground and support behavior, a control criterion for main roadways under weak geological conditions is proposed in this paper."

An ongoing research program at the Spokane Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines is directed toward investigating drilling parameters (thrust, torque, penetration rate, and drill revolutions) during the drilling of roof bolt holes. A system that measures these drilling parameters calculates the specific energy of drilling, and determines drill bit position has been developed by the Bureau and mounted on a roof bolting/drilling machine, through the use of a microcomputer, critical drilling parameters can be immediately interpreted and analyzed. This makes it possible to inform the operator of hazardous roof conditions. Initial results of this program are presented here.

This is a paper demonstrating the steps taken to combine multiple types of piles for a single site to maximize the benefits and characteristics of each method. We intend to discuss the use of grouted displacement piles in lieu of traditional pile types that were specified on an individual project. We will show how implementing this alternate pile type can both supplement and replace the originally specified pile to increase efficiency and lower costs. We will demonstrate a reduction in spoils, vibration, crew hours, and equipment size while employing methods to overcome unforeseen ground conditions.

INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center, has been conducting and documenting rock mechanics research in the Coeur d’Alene mining district for the past ten years (1, 2, 3, 4, 14, 15). A current project combines the information gathered from rock mechanics instrumentation, geologic structure, and analytic techniques to improve shaft and support design for the deep mines of the district (3). This project required knowledge of the anticipated loads and the physical properties of the rock mass to provide accurate input data for computer design models. Several techniques have been utilized to determine the physical parameters including the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) solid inclusion probe, the CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) biaxial and triaxial strain cells, and the CSM (Colorado School of Mines) dilatometer. This paper describes the determination of the in situ modulus of deformation in three mines over a period of three years and the evaluation of these results as they applied to this project. The need for in-situ rock mass properties such as the modulus of deformation has stimulated research and development of a large number of instrumentation techniques. One area of continuing interest involves various methods of radial borehole dilation. This concept was pursued by Menard (9) with an apparatus known as the pressure meter, which is used frequently in soil mechanics. Other developments in rock mechanics include the CPC (cylindrical pressure cell) by Panek (11) and the dilatometer by Rocha et.al. (13) in Portugal. The CSM dilatometer, which also utilizes this technique, was chosen for this project because it required a small amount of background study, was inexpensive, and could easily be combined with other experiments being planned for the test locations. Although no previous field applications to hard rock (compressive strengths greater than 20,000 psi) has been documented, the instrument was selected since good results have been achieved in granite, oil shale, and several coal measure rocks (11, 12).

"The permeability of sintering mix is a vital technological property in sintering process. However, it can only be measured by off-line method on samples picked from the production. In order to acquire the properties of sintering mix accurately, on-line measuring of permeability is urgently required. Based on the reflection characteristics of bed permeability on pipe flowing parameters, a new method is presented in this paper for on-line measuring of sintering mix permeability. The measurement can be performed by blowing gas flow in the bed with the measuring pipe. Measuring results are obtained by picking the data on flowing rate and pressure in the pipe. The function of flowing rate to pressure may be certain for samples with the same permeability. Thus, the permeability was determined by contrasting this function to the result of off-line measuring, and the relative coefficient or R2 value was more than 99%.IntroductionThe permeability of sintering mix is a vital technological property in sintering process, which directly determines production and quality of sinter, or even determines whether the sinter production is carried out smoothly [1,3].The permeability have more obvious influence on vertical sintering speed, which is mainly related to air quantity passing through material bed. Under certain inducing capacity and negative pressure, the vertical sintering speed mainly depends on the permeability of sintering mix. Low permeability may make burning through point of sintering move back, and the sinter mix cannot be burnt through. High permeability may make burning through point of sintering move forward, improving production efficiency by increasing the speed of sintering machine [4] Good permeability means a small resistance of fan ,reduction of negative pressure of sintering machine, and full contact between air and sulfide, which can strengthen physical-chemical reaction during sintering process and increase desulphurization rate. In gas well through material layer process, gas-solid desulfurization reaction and gas-solid-liquid heat exchange are completed and hot gas through the combustion zone supplies the sintering process with heat. Finally uniform sintering of the material layer in height and width direction is achieved [5] While high permeability index leads to weak sinter strength, fast sintering speed, short residence time of high temperature region and little liquid phase. Moreover, liquid phase in the fast cooling process is too late to fully crystallize but forming glass phase which is harmful to sinter strength as well. Bad permeability means a big fan resistance and increase of negative pressure of sintering machine, which make the air pass through material layer difficultly. When air and mix contact difficultly, removal of sulfide reduces so that desulfurization is incomplete. Meanwhile, low caking efficiency, slow sintering speed and easily burnt sinter , reduce sinter output. Therefore appropriate permeability of sintering mix is the premise of stable burning through point and satisfactory sinter output and quality."

In order to more accurately predict longwall surface subsidence over the Pittsburgh No. 8 Coal in Eastern Ohio, North American Coal Corporation's Quarto Mining Company undertook or participated in several subsidence studies. Due to the changing roof geology and rapid variations in the amount of cover two separate areas were investigated at two different mines to determine the subsidence response if any to these changes. Data generated from these studies were compared with NCB derived,data for accuracy and then used to predict subsidence under houses, gas lines and other critical man made structures. The following report summarizes the results of these studies as well as the subsidence case histories of gas lines, transmission towers, houses and water wells. Problems that were encountered during both phases of this process (investigation and subsequent application) are also included.

Mass blasts have been the subject of extensive studies because of their potential benefits in mining operations. However, it has not been possible to advance due to the paradigm that states that the blasts near the designed final wall or to critical structures have to be low tonnage. Another reason is the absence of specialised simulation programs to more precisely determine the influence of the energy released by blasting to the rock mass. There are some studies that demonstrate the possibility of massive blasting that maintain the design of the final slope (Farias and Santander, 2014). It should be noted that these studies develop the concept that the size of the blast should not increase the peak vibration in the rock mass.The study was carried out in partnership with Los Colorados Mining Company. Analysis, reconciliation and wall control for two types of blasts were performed:blasting production: approximately 850 000 t, with special wall control considerationsblasting of approximately 950 000 t over the entire width of the bench.Monitoring systems were used in the near field and far field using examination of holes in order to obtain information to assess the impact on the rock mass and then to compare these to conventional blasting combining production and contour blasting.The results show that for a large blasted volume, production and/or those generated from toe to crest on the bench did not produce more impact in the rock mass than the conventional blasting.The conclusions drawn from this study are:an improvement in the excavation rate of 7500 t/h that is higher than the maximum rates normally obtainedthe peak vibrations of the P wave generated by both blasts did not exceed the peak particle velocity criteria (Vergara and Muñoz, 2014)holes examination indicating no difference in their entire length, in pre- and post-blast reviewover US$2 000 000 savings generated in the year (estimated by the client) (Avilés, 2014).CITATION:Vergara, J, Muñoz, C, Ortega, N and Avilés, D, 2015. Abstract. The shaft was drilled on U.S. Government land in the Piceance Creek Basin and was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. It was drilled to 723 meters (2 371') to provide access to rich deposits of oil shale, nahcolite and dawsonite for geotechnical test work and environmental mining research. Rotary drilling and dual string, reverse-air, jet-assist circulation methods were used. Drilling required 8 months. Site preparation, running and cementing the casing required another 4 months. A 2.44-meter (96-inch) ID steel welded casing, 5.1 cm (2 inches) thick was installed and 2 700 tonnes (63 000 sacks) of cement were slurried and pumped into the annulus.

Near the village of Villarino de los Aires, in the province of Salamanca, Spain, is an existing underground hydroelectric power plant. A major enlargement was undertaken to increase the electrical generating capacity, under a contract awarded to a joint venture of Dragados & Construcciones, S.A., Entrecanales y Tavora, S.A., and S.A. Conrad Zschokke. The enlargement required the excavation of an underground system of tunnels, shafts and chambers adjacent to existing facilities and interconnected with these facilities. The existing machine hall and transformer chamber were both extended, requiring excavation of the rock that constituted the existing end walls of these chambers. The drilling, blasting and excavating of the underground system had to be done without damaging existing underground openings or any of the existing structures, equipment or instrumentation facilities. This required careful control of vibrations, air waves and dust. The joint-venture contractors preferred to use electric blasting methods, if these methods could be implemented in a safe manner. The safety question had to be evaluated carefully. High electrical potentials existed at the site because of the electrical generating and transmitting facilities that could not be shut down. Electrical fields were carefully studied prior to the beginning of the work. This was done both in the underground environment and above the ground surface. "The Crescent, DM, and Pothook zones are copper-gold porphyry deposits which formed in association with alkalic intrusions of the early Jurassic Iron Mask batholith. The characteristics of the Crescent and DM deposits are nearly identical. Both formed along the contact between the Cherry Creek monzodiorite and Pothook diorite phases of the batholith. Permeable intrusion breccias along the contact concentrated the flow of hydrothermal fluids. Early, pre-ore alteration is represented by pervasive, sulphide-barren potassium metasomatism. The precipitation of copper-gold ore occurred during subsequent fracture-controlled potassic alteration, and is most strongly developed in chlorite-sulphide veins and their alteration envelopes. A central zone of potassic alteration is surrounded by a propylitic, pyritic halo in both deposits. The DM zone is unique among alkalic porphyry deposits in its high abundance of quartz-sulphide veins.The Pothook deposit formed at the westernmost contact of the Iron Mask batholith with enclosing Nicola Group volcanic rocks. Pervasive potassium metasomatism, similar in style to that at Crescent and DM, is associated with intrusion of the Cherry Creek monzonite. Pervasive and fracture-controlled albitic alteration is associated with intrusion of the Sugarloaf diorite and introduced minor copper-gold mineralization. Most of the copper-gold mineralization was introduced during formation of veins and breccia matrices dominated by magnetite/hematite and sulphide. Late-stage chlorite veining may have remobilized or introduced additional gold mineralization.Copper and gold assays in the Crescent deposit are well-correlated and have a nearly constant Cu:Au ratio, suggesting that the metals coprecipitated during a single hydrothermal event. In the Pothook deposit, copper and gold do not correlate closely, lack spatial correspondence, and suggest that transport and/or deposition of the two metals were not identically controlled and that they may have been introduced at different times by separate hydrothermal events."

Wheal Jane, situated between Truro and the Carnmenellis granite, is under development by Consolidated Gold Fields, Ltd., as a tin producer. The main or B lode comprises a complex cassiterite-sulphide ore located in shear zones along the footwall of the lowest of a series of porphyry dykes (elvans) which strike ENE and dip 35° north. Minor mineralisation follows other elvan contacts and sets of later steeply dipping fractures. The localisation and overall geometry of the deposit is explained in terms of the complex structural geology of the Lower Palaeozoic metasediments and the shape and manner of emplacement of the invading Hercynian granite of Cornwall. Variations in the thickness and grade of the orebody, and in the nature of the mineralisation, are shown to be structurally controlled by undulations of the footwall contact of the B elvan.
