Most of the coal reserves in India are of drift origin and have very poor washability characteristics and a high level of near gravity materials. At least 30 new coal wash plants are expected to be set up in the next 5years.In such a scenario, adequate sampling followed by sink float test work for washability analysis becomes very critical for designing these new plants. For coal sampling purpose, stipulations of different standards are sometimes formidable and on the border of ?impracticality?; sometimes are self contradictory in terms of gross sample weight vis-a-vis minimum number of particles required in each size fraction and in each relative density fraction and also the minimum mass in the latter. Validation of the generated data is another important aspect of washability analysis. These issues can easily be addressed by using straight forward mathematical relationships, well known RR plots and by using simple MS Excel tool, etc.

THERE are about sixty bodies which chemists call elements ; the simplest forms of matter which they have been able to extract from the rocky crust of our earth, its waters, and its atmosphere. These substances are distributed in very unequal quantities, and in very different manners. As regards the frequency of these elements in nature, neglecting for the present those which constitute air and water, and confining ourselves to the solid matters of the earth's crust, there are a few which are exceedingly abundant, making up nine-tenths, if not ninety-five hundredths, of the rocks so far as known to us. The elements of which silica, alumina, lime, magnesia, potash, and soda are oxides, are very common, and occur almost everywhere. There are others which are much rarer, being found in comparatively small quantities. Many of these rarer elements are, however, of great importance in the economy of nature. Such are the common metals and other substances used in the arts, which occur in nature in quantities relatively very minute, but which have been collected by various agencies, and thus made available for the wants of man. It is chiefly of the well-known metals, iron, copper, silver, and gold, that I propose to speak to-night ; but there are two other elements not classed among the metals, which I shall notice for the reason that their history is extremely important, and will, moreover, enable , us to comprehend more clearly some points in that of the metals themselves. Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal were mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-year periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to increase. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu yd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu yd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining; 4) Surface mining normally recovers a- much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can be recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures can best be extracted by surface mining [ ] methods because of geologic reasons such as the nature of the roof or bottom, thickness of the seam, multiple bedding, etc.

This paper outlines the concepts used to correlate rock failure with microseismic events and presents examples of microseismic monitoring together with associated computer modelling of the rock failure. This study is motivated by the need to develop improved ways to reduce ground control hazards in underground mining. Toward this end we present and compare results from numerical modelling and micro- seismic monitoring studies conducted at several different mine sites. Emphasis is on integrating results obtained with these tools to characterize, and thus increase our understanding of, important mine deformation processes. The ultimate goal is to use this knowledge to design mine structures, and develop mitigation measures, that minimize specific ground control hazards.

Because of the absence of an iron-producing industry, the Pacific Northwest is working under an economic handicap. This is particularly apparent in the gray-iron-foundry industry because of the high price of pig iron imported from foreign sources or shipped in from producing ?areas within the United States. The high prices and sometimes short supply of ferrous metal products has put a brake on industrialization, which has been only partly compensated by the availability of cheap electric power. The economic condition of the gray-iron-foundry industry could be improved by establishing a small iron-producing industry based on the locally available ores. Moreover, establishing a local iron smelter would create a market for resources now dormant. Low-grade ores of manganese, chromium, and nickel would become usable in industry when combined with the iron ore from Scappoose. Pig iron produced in even limited quantities would level out the fluctuation in supply. The ore deposits, being small, would not supply enough pig iron to satisfy the entire demand. This condition necessitates designing special pig irons that will carry abnormally high proportions of scrap in the cupola charge.

This paper is one of a series being published by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and practices used in mining and preparing crushed stone for market. Performance, in terms of units of work or tons produced per machine and per operator man-hour, is given whenever that information can be obtained. Direct operating costs are useful for comparing different methods and are included, if available. In addition to describing equipment and methods used} the Bureau considered it desirable to discuss the engineering reasons for the choices that have been made. This paper is particularly concerned with operation of the Camak quarry and plant of the Weston-Brooker Co. The quarry and plant are near Cedar Rock, north of State Highway No. 80 and east of Middle Creek in Warren County, Ga., and about 40 miles west of Augusta. Rail access is by a spur line of the Georgia Railroad from Camak, 5 miles southwest. The main office of the company is at Cayce, S. C.

INTRODUCTION THE purpose of this chapter is to present the diagnostic features (geologic, mineralogic, chemical, and physical) of the principal types of hypogene ore deposits recognized in current genetic classifications, and to classify the ore deposits of the western United States into those types. The genetic divisions used and the criteria determining them are essentially those followed by Lindgren in his Mineral Deposits. Deviations from Lindgren represent either changed conceptions since 1928 (the date of the third edition of Mineral Deposits) due to advance in knowledge or the inevitable differences of opinion between experts in active fields of investigation. Though nineteen economic geologists have been given free hand in presenting their particular topics, there are no fundamental departures in the chapter from the principles set forth by Lindgren. It would be entirely beyond the capacity of a single chapter to give a comprehensive geologic description of all the ore deposits of the western United States. Descriptions of individual deposits have been restricted to those features that are of most diagnostic genetic value. All of the more important deposits receive that much attention. Deposits of lesser economic importance and those inadequately known geologically are treated more briefly or merely cited under what seems to be their proper genetic assignment. The geographic limits of the descriptive matter are the Black Hills and the United States between the Rocky Mountains and the pacific Coast. Capacity of the chapter has made it necessary to impose these geographic limits.

"A stream sediment geochemical survey covering an area of 13.000 sq. km near Churchill Falls. Labrador. was conducted for Brinex (British Newfoundland Explorations Ltd.) prior to partial flooding by the Churchill Falls power project. Stream sediments (minus 80-mesh) were analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Ag, Mo. U and Mn, and the heavy mineral, nonmagnetic fraction (minus 60-mesh) for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Ag, Mo, Ba and Mn. A binocular examination of the concentrates for sulphides and pyrope garnet was done on the heavy mineral concentrates. The concentrates were also examined for fluorescent minerals.Two distinct areas with high trace-element values indicate the need for follow-up studies. The first is in an area of gabbro erratics containing massive and disseminated sulphides (pyrrhotite, pyrite and minor chalcopyrite) on the western edge of the survey area along the Esker Road. The second, largest area (several hundred square kilometres) is anomalous in U and Mo and associated with felsic intrusives (Red Wine Complex?), syenites. granite gneiss and sedimentary rocks (Seal Lake Group?).The binocular study showed that almost 15% of the heavy mineral concentrates contained pyrite and no other sulphides. This indicates that this technique may be worthwhile in determining the presence of sulphide minerals in stream sediments from glaciated environments. The only fluorescent mineral observed in the study was zircon."

Modelling stockpiles is a key factor of a project’s economics and operation in mining, because not all the mined ores are not able to mill for many reasons. Furthermore, the financial value of the ore in the stockpile needs to be reflected on the balance sheet. Therefore, automatically tracking the boundaries of the stockpile facilitates the mine scheduling engineers to calculate the tonnage of the ore remaining in the stockpile. This paper suggests how the dynamic of stockpile shape changes caused by dumping and reclaiming operations can be inferred using polygon models. The paper also demonstrates how the geometry of stockpiles can be inferred in the absence of reclaimed bucket information, in which case the reclaim polygons are established using the digger’s global positioning system (GPS) positional data at the time of truck loading. This work further compares two polygon models for creating 2D shapes.

In the 21st century, dynamic, accurate digital 3-D geological models are essential to the pursuit of safe, efficient and profitable mining. This is particularly true for the deep-level underground mines in South Africa. The Sirovision® solution is a collaboration project between the Australian CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), Datamine Software Ltd. and AngloGold Ashanti Ltd (AGA). The purpose of the project is to provide a fully integrated digital rock face imaging, geological mapping and modelling system for the AGA gold mining operations. The CSIRO-developed Sirovision® Stereo Camera Rig (SCR) consists of two digital cameras, alighting system, a laser guidance system and image processing software. The imaging system works on the principles of photogrammetry, i.e. overlaying of two 2-D images with a central focus point, with mathematical algorithms extracting 3-D information from the 2-D image pair. The output from matching several image pairs is a computer-generated, full 3-D, virtual copy of the mining excavation. The image resolution and relief ares of sufficient quality to distinguish different rock types and structural contacts. Functionality within Datamine Studio3 is used to add geological intelligence to the 3-D images provided by Sirovision®. The geologist identifies and ?draws? lines representing geological features directly onto the image. By utilizing the inherent ?topography? of the 3-D image, the software is able to convert the lines into 3-D surfaces, ready for use in the 3-D geological model. Subsequent to promising underground test results from AGA?s Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM) in Australia and other mining operations worldwide, it was decided to test the Sirovision® system in the South African deep-level gold mines. The first underground tests at Moab Khotsong Mine began in January 2009. The objectives of these tests entailed the capturing of 3-D images of selected development ends, mapping of geological features onto the 3-D images and integration of the mapping data with the 3-D geological model. Some downsides have cropped up during the feasibility testing, related to practicality of the SCR for acquisition of 3-Dimagery in the deep-level underground operating environment. These constraints will have to be addressed prior to operational implementation. Facing such difficulties is not unusual when attempting to implement new technology in such a challenging working environment and testwork is still in progress at the mine in order to prove the concept of using this technology in a Witwatersrand underground gold mine. The great advantage of the Sirovision® solution is that it offers the geologist the opportunity to work remotely on a 3-D virtual copy of a mining excavation, without the heat, humidity, hazards and time constraints associated with physical mapping in an underground workplace.

It is known that an addition of rigid particles into a fluid medium changes the flow field. Therefore, the rheological behavior of suspensions will be hardly Newtonian, such as their continuum phase. This phenomena was studied by Einstein in 1906 (Einstein, 1956) for the single case of spherical particles in a continuum liquid of a very dilute suspension. The final analysis applied for suspensions was derived from the evaluation of the behavior of ideal gases, finding a simple expression for the viscosity of the dispersion. All the following works about the hydrodynamics of suspensions at low and high solid contents was based in the Einstein´s model. For clay minerals suspensions where the physical and chemical properties of the particles are complex, it was found that the Einstein´s model is not a good approximation, even so for the most dilute dispersions. The present paper shows a new approximation that describes the non-Newtonian behavior of the suspensions of clays, and the attempt of understand how the different fine sizes, shapes and physico-chemical properties of clay particle surfaces give specific characteristics of plasticity, viscosity or visco elasticity to suspensions. During recent years the designing of mine cars has become a very highly specialized art. Mechanical methods of mining, constantly increasing speeds of transportation and thin seams of coal have made it absolutely essential to develop low cars of maximum capacity. The producer of coal from thick seams, because of mechanical mining, which he is already employing or con- templating adopting, is now as much interested in low cars of high capacity, as is the thin seam operator. The mine car builder has been alert to this trend and is equipped with a specially trained corps of engineers and salesmen, who receive the necessary information from the producer and develop therefrom a suitable car design to fulfill the conditions.

Spiral concentrators are one of the flowing film gravity concentration devices used to beneficiate coal and mineral ores. The aim of the current study is to understand the particulate flow and separation performance of an LD9 spiral concentrator using a multi-phase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. The CFD model utilises the Algebraic slip mixture model to simulate particulate flows. The model employs the Renormalisation group (RNG) k-ɛ turbulence models to resolve the fluid turbulence. Initially, the volume of fluid method was adopted to track the water-air interface. Simulations were then carried out at low (0.3 and 3 wt.%) and moderate (15 wt.%) solids concentrations. Multiple particle-phase representing particles of poly sizes (75–1400 µm) and multi-densities (1450–2650 kg/m3 ) were simulated to study the particle segregation on the spiral trough surface. The numerical predictions are compared with the literature performance data at a diluted pulp flow rate of 6 m3 /hr. The results were found in close agreement. Further, the same CFD model is used to study the change in pulp velocity, streamflow rates, and separation performance at increasing solids concentration. For the same density particles, Fine particles mostly show higher volume concentration in the middle and outer trough regions, whereas coarse particles show higher volume concentration in the interior and central trough regions. It implies that the fine particles mostly segregate towards the outer region, and dense particles segregate towards the axial column.

In this report, the Federal Bureau of Mines presents a summary of the occurrence, properties, and uses of some natural bitumens, using the layman's or dictionary definition of bitumens - that is, naturally occurring hydro-carbons. Emphasis is on the less common solid and semisolid bitumens, particularly those occurring or used to some extent in the United States. This comprises data from many sources and references to these sources for more detail than is given in this summary. This paper was prepared primarily to answer questions about some of the less known bituminous materials. The word hydrocarbons could just as well have been substituted in the title for bitumens, but bitumens was used, since an abstract of the paper was presented at a meeting where the major emphasis was on bituminous materials. The reader will realize that coals, of which only the more unusual such as the cannel coals and torbanites are discussed in this paper, are primarily mixtures of bituminous materials and carbon. The amount of bituminous material, or volatile matter, in coals is greatest in the lower rank coals and the unusual types described in this paper, and decreases as coal rank increases. However, since no method other than destruction of the original coal substance by heat is known that will separate the volatile matter from the carbon, it appears reasonable to classify the coals with other bituminous materials, particularly since bituminous coal - the most widely used coal - by its name indicates the combination of bituminous materials and carbon.

Foi identificada uma trinca no convertedor 2 da ArcelorMittal Tubarão em junho de 2013 durante início de carregamento de gusa, esta se localizava na solda entre o cone inferior e o flange do fundo. A análise abrangeu a avaliação dos danos no vaso, à análise da fratura, análise de material, onde foi verificado que a trinca não foi decorrente de trinca preexistente, nem de degradação do material ou imperfeição de solda. Foi construído um modelo 3D do convertedor considerando-se todos os detalhamentos pertinentes à uma análise termo estrutural. Foram analisadas as seguintes situações: Refratamento conforme projeto do fornecedor – junta de papelão; Projeto de refratamento incluindo influência da junta de dilatação natural 0,2 mm existente no refratário; Carregamento térmico; e situação corrente do projeto considerando proteção de soleira. De acordo com os resultados, verificou-se que a causa da falha do convertedor esta relacionada a esforços oriundos da expansão térmica do refratário.

Foram avaliados os efeitos da tecnologia de laminação seguida da têmpera direta na produção de chapas grossas de alta dureza, resistentes à abrasão, na Linha de Chapas Grossas da Gerdau Ouro Branco. Para tanto, foram analisados os parâmetros de processo e propriedades mecânicas, através da realização de ensaios de dureza, tração, tenacidade ao impacto Charpy e metalografia. A tecnologia de têmpera direta, realizada através do Mulpic, possibilita a fabricação de aços de alta dureza com carbono equivalente significativamente baixo. O mecanismo principal para aumento da dureza, baseia-se em uma laminação com passes de alta redução, iniciando o resfriamento com o aço ainda constituído exclusivamente pela fase austenítica, sendo temperado a baixas temperaturas, ocorrendo a completa transformação martensítica. Tanto o processo de têmpera direta no Mulpic, quanto os processos anteriores precisam ser muito bem controlados, visando uma microestrutura homogênea e um produto com a planicidade adequada.

Viscosity is one of the most important physicochemical properties during pyrometallurgical operations. In the sub-liquidus regime, an important factor is the presence of suspended solid particles, yet its influence is not well-described in earlier literature, despite the significance of this factor. This project aims to determine the influence of spinel particles (Zn(Al,Fe)2O4) on the rheology of a multiphase synthetic PbO-SiO2-ZnO-Fe2O3-CaO-Al2O3 slag system. Three data sets with a wellcontrolled methodology and three different spinel sizes (small (13 μm), medium (34 μm) and large particles (76 μm)) were published previously, using a custom-built high-temperature rheometer. This study presents an additional data set of slag viscosity measurements, performed using a different apparatus, the Anton Paar FRS 1800, to verify the consistency of the earlier determined viscosity behaviour. Within this data set, no consistent trend could be found between the predicted wt per cent spinel and the relative viscosity. Therefore, additional quenching experiments were conducted to identify the morphology and experimentally determined volume fraction of the spinel particles in the slag. These measurements revealed a difference in spinel size across the samples and corresponding viscosity behaviour, emphasizing the importance of spinel particle size on slag viscosity. Once the spinel size was taken into account, consistent viscosity results (relative apparent viscosity and flow index) were observed across the two devices. This study confirms that, once all parameters affecting slag viscosity are considered, the viscosity behaviour of a heterogeneous slag can be uniquely determined. The resulting optimised slag viscosity models can be used to predict viscosity before processing, addressing relevant phenomena such as slag tapping, slag foaming and copper droplet settlement.
