The mining, metallurgical, and petroleum industries can be viewed as financial or as social institutions or both. The differences between these two conceptions of their businesses will influence their environmental 'and social actions. During the next 10-20 years western industry will be subject to a drop in the growth of a more highly educated labour force and to the emergence of holistic economics, new national goals, and a new ecological perspective. The profitability of the mining industry may therefore be influenced by the human side of its business to a greater degree. The increasing human, social, and environmental responsibilities can be discharged by improving the miner's equipment; by learning to look at situations through the eyes of all those involved; by developing common 'languages' which governments and the public can understand; and by mediating where feasible on the international scene.

O desenvolvendo da indústria de eletroeletrônicos associada ao barateamento dos produtos tem reduzido a vida útil de equipamentos levando a uma geração elevada de resíduos de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos (REEE). Um componente desse resíduo são as placas de circuito impresso, que possuem em sua composição altos teores de metais, que podem ser recuperados através de processos de reciclagem. O presente trabalho busca caracterizar placas mãe de computador, determinando sua quantidade de material orgânico, cerâmico e metálico. As placas foram direcionadas para cominuição, que foi realizada em moinho de facas com grelha de 9mm, seguida por um moinho de martelos, atingindo uma granulometria menor que 2mm. A amostra foi então quarteada, para uma maior homogeneização e passou por ensaio de digestão em água régia. O licor resultante foi diluído para determinação do teor dos metais Ag, Al, Au, Ba, Ca, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Sn, e Zn utilizando espectrometria de emissão óptica por indução de plasma (ICP-OES). O sólido filtrado, também resultante da digestão em água régia, passou por um ensaio de perda ao fogo a 800°C por uma hora, para determinar o teor de material orgânico. Os resultados indicaram que o Cu é o metal de maior concentração com 22,5% na placa de circuito impresso e que a mesma possui 43,7% de metais, 31,9% de polímeros e 24,4% de cerâmicas. A prata representa 0,04% dos metais e sua obtenção será realizada na forma de nanopartículas a partir de rotas hidrometalúrgicas.

Modern-day direct reduction of iron first developed as a small-scale, low capital and operating cost alternative to the blast furnace. Since commercialization of continuous DR technology in the late 1960s, the market for the products of direct reduction has grown to more than 74 million tonnes in 2012. The initial advantages of DR plants over BF facilities have grown over the years, for several reasons, including the increased size of DR modules, lower energy and emissions (particularly CO2), along with the flexibility to use a number of different reductants. The development of DR technology over the past forty years will be emphasized in this presentation, including recent developments that allow for even more direct sustainability comparisons with the iron blast furnace – and even combine the two technologies for improved synergies. Also briefly discussed will be the possibilities of using direct reduction for non-ferrous ores.

. RECENTLY two papers on the structure of eutectics were read before the British Institute of Metals, one by F. L. Brady1 and the other by A. Portevin.2 In the preparation of photomicrographs of laboratory specimens as illustrations for student work, and in connection with various researches; the writer has been working along the same line for some, time and, therefore, was much interested in the results given, especially those of Portevin. He has correlated the information on the subject and has outlined a broad scientific basis for future work along this line. It is largely with the idea-of adding something by way of illustration to the work already done that this paper is written. The eutectic is generally understood to mean the alloy having the lowest melting point of any alloy of the system, and in which the melt becomes supersaturated with reference to the two or more phases which, separate out simultaneously (or alternately). From the surface pattern, the eutectic means; a structure with no primary crystals. It is not always easy to get the exact eutectic composition in making any alloy; in fact, a slight range in composition may be expected and some of the coarser particles may be richer in either of the composing metals. Even when chemical analysis shows the right composition, differences in density of the pure metals may cause segregation, or. supercooling resulting from different crystallizing properties may give a surface pattern the appearance of being on one side of the eutectic point. However, the alloys on either side of the eutectic composition, showing primary crystals of one of the phases and the effect of the pro-eutectic form on the surface pattern of the eutectic make a very interesting study, which is slightly touched upon in this paper. The phases, or microconstituents, of a eutectic may be pure metals (Pb-Sb, Tl-Au), solid solutions (Cd-Zn), a pure metal and a solid solution; (Ag-Sn), or a pure metal or solid solution with an intermetallic compound (Sb-Mg, Sb-Cu, As-Cu, Bi-Te, etc.).

"Metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) is an ideal technique for the deposition of conducting and non-conducting oxide based thin film materials. In this paper we have presented a study of photo assisted MOCVD for the low temperature deposition of a number of oxide based advanced materials. We have used incoherent light sources as the source of optical and thermal energy in our MOCVD system. The vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and ultraviolet (UV) photons can enhance the surface reaction of the absorbed molecules through the perturbation of the electronic state of binding between the absorbed molecules and the solid surface. Unlike plasma process, no surface damage is expected and high quality materials have been deposited. At a given substrate temperature, the performance of deposited film depends on the lamp configuration.INTRODUCTIONMetalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) has become the standard manufacturing technique for the deposition of large area thin films of compound semiconductors. l.(.w-cost, high crystalline quality, atomically clean and sharp interfaces, atomic layer epitaxy, high throughput rates and potential for direct writing are some attractive features of MOCVD. Due to a number of potential advantages mentioned above, MOCVD is considered as an ideal technique for the deposition of various electronic and optical materials for a wide variety of applications. Rapid isothermal processing based on incoherent radiation as the source of optical and thermal energy is emerging as the key low thermal budget (integral of processing time and temperature) processing technique for the fabrication of current and next generation of microelectronic and optoelectronic devices and circuits [1]. In this paper we have demonstrated that the design of the lamp assembly plays an important role in determining the properties of the materials deposited by RIP assisted MOCVD. We have studied the growth rates, structural properties and electrical properties of Y2O3/Si structure. At a given substrate temperature, best results are obtained for the lamp assembly that provides maximum number of VUV and UV photons."

THE experiments reported in this paper have been fruitful in disclosing the mechanism of the deformation of iron in compression. They have established the nature of "deformation bands," "etch bands," or "X-bands," that have been a recognized but little understood feature in the structure of cold-worked metals since the early days of metallography, and have shown the role of the bands in the development of preferred orientations by cold-working. The work has also shown the relation of the orientation of individual grains to the preferred orientation of the aggregate. Some of the methods previously used in the determination of the indices of slip planes and slip directions are shown to be untrustworthy in the presence of deformation bands. The conclusion is reached that many slip planes and slip directions must operate during each stage in the compression of a single crystal, and that theories failing to take account of this require revision. In conducting the experiments a method of compression has been used by which extreme reductions can easily be reached, even to the limit set by the metal's capacity to deform without fracture. The work is a portion of a research program on the plastic properties of iron and steel. It is being used as a foundation for studies of orientations resulting from recrystallization and is being extended to other metals and other types of deformation. PREVIOUS WORK The previous experiments are few and have given confusing results. Ono1 compressed a polycrystalline alpha-iron specimen between two flat plates of a testing machine and found that severe deformation oriented the crystals into a duplex preferred orientation, one set of crystallites having a cube diagonal of the body-centered cubic lattice parallel to the compression axis, and another set having a cube axis parallel to the compression axis. TiO2 is an ideal material for catalytic technology due to its unique properties. In this paper, Sm3+ doped TiO2 photo-catalyst was developed to improve the efficiency of TiO2 and to use the natural light as irradiation source, which was made from Titanium Tetrabutoxide and Samarium Oxide with the Sol-Gel process. The Sm3+-TiO2 photocatalyst was used to degrade reactive orange 4 (RO4) in Azo Dyes. The effects of solution pH, Sm3+ concentration and catalytic time on the degradation rate of RO4 were studied. The characteristics of the catalyst were analyzed with XRD and TEM. The experimental results show that the catalyst has high activity in the degradation of RO4. The Azo bonds of RO4 are active and easily broken by oxidation. The catalytic activity of the Sm3+ doped catalyst greatly depends on the pH of solution. The catalyst has high photo-catalytic activity at both neutral and alkaline conditions. The degradation mechanism of the Sm3+ doped TiO2 photo-catalyst was also discussed.

Proper stemming not only affects the rock breakage process, but also controls the unwanted side effects of blasting such as airblast, ground vibration, and flyrock. Little research has been conducted on the behavior of borehole stemming material under high pressure loading conditions. The methods of selecting stemming particle size and necessary stemming length were previously determined only by trial and error in the field.

The single six-in-line furnace of the Polokwane Smelter is the largest installed high-intensity furnace for platinum group metals (PGM) base metals sulphide smelting in the world. The Marlin deposit is a low sulphidation Au-Ag, epithermal system, with reserves of more than five million ounces gold equivalent. Marlin was discovered in December 1998, after a nine months grassroots exploration program in western Guatemala, focused on volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre. Before the Marlin discovery, several gold prospects were found along an east-west corridor of approximately 70 kilometers long, associated to regional faulting systems. The deposit is hosted in faults, within Tertiary andesitic rocks and bedded volcano-sediments. Host-rocks are argillized closer to the surface and propyllitized at depth. Mineralization occurs in multi-stage quartz stockworks and breccia veins.

An upsurge in demand for Australian coal has seen a much needed programme for a new generation of coal ports. This paper discusses design concepts in planning a large modern terminal, with the 25 Nt/a Port Kembla and the 50 Mt/a Newcastle facilities as practical examples. The need is emphasised for a studied Master Plan, in-built materials handling flexibility and staged development. Trends in bulk ship design and loading methods are noted. Features of these Australian designs include methods of dealing with poor ground conditions, functional civil engineering for environmental protection and optimal marine structure designs.

At FHC Gold Company's Paradise Peak Mine gold and silver are produced. Precious metals recovery rates are very satisfactory along with the recovery and production of a relative high volume of mercury. At Paradise Peak precious metals are recovered via the Merrill-Crowe process and delivered to the refinery area as a mercury-bearing precipitate cake. The recovery of mercury is then obtained through a vacuum retort system. The balance of the material is mixed with fluxes and then melted and cast into dore' bars for shipping. Issues of retort capacity and concerns over efficiency led to research into the retort process itself.

Myuna Colliery long term ventilation requirements were included as part of the overall planning of colliery construction and underground development. Ventilation, during the simultaneous sinking of two drifts and the downcast shaft, was accomplished by established methods of ducted exhaust and blower fans. Drivages for the 3 seam interconnections of shaft and drifts were ventilated by extension and duplication of the exhaust systems. Ventilation, for the below seam extension of the belt drift, construction of between seam and below seam bins, and the completion of a circular between seam drift, required a step by step changeover to a temporary main ventilation exhaust fan mounted adjacent to the top of the completed downcast shaft. The second, permanent upcast, shaft was commenced and colliery production started one seam at a time, using the transport drift, while the underground bins, belt and between seam drifts were completed. The uocast shaft was completed and a connection made in the upper seam, completing all contract mining and allowing the main fan to be erected. M.S. Azun The article unfortunately has some serious flaws negating the usefulness of the paper. The authors claim that kriging (linear kriging) is superior to other methods such as polygon. This is not the case. The deterministic methods (referring to polygon, ID, IDS, etc.) should not be compared with the statistical methods (linear kriging, disjunctive kriging, etc.) because they differ not only in their assumptions, but also their tools used in estimation. Thus, they give different results. By comparing the results of deterministic methods and linear kriging, the authors conclude that polygon, IDS, and linear kriging give an average thickness close to the value obtained from realizations. Besides, they argue that linear kriging gives less variance than the others (Fig. 2). The first conclusion is expected, due to the well-known central limit theorem. The second is the result of the statistical properties of different estimators. Thus, the comparison presented in the paper is rather meaningless because the authors have failed to follow basic statistical procedures. The numerical results of different approaches to an estimation problem cannot be generalized. In conclusion, the paper is not a meaningful contribution, and sadly, quite erroneous. Reply by E.Y. Baafi and Y.C. Kim The two key contentions made by M.S. Azun regarding the paper are: deterministic methods should not be compared with statistical methods and, hence, the results are erroneous; and the paper does not make a meaningful contribution. The first contention is an academic one. Most practitioners in ore reserve estimation could care less whether the tool they are using falls under a deterministic or a probabilistic method, so long as it gives the desired answers. It is probably for this reason that, whenever any new tool such as linear kriging is introduced to practioners in the mining industry, they would like to see a comparison test performed between the existing and the more familiar tools with a new and "strange" tool. Only when a new tool passes such a test, the generally conservative mining community would begin to utilize the new tool to its advantage. The second contention, is a subjective one. The final judgment should be left up to the readers within the mining community. If kriging is accepted more among practitioners, partly due to the paper, then the paper makes a practical contribution to the state-of-the art in ore reserve estimation. Finally, M.S. Azun entirely missed two main points in the paper. The first is that any comparative study of kriging vs. Polygonal or IDS should be performed for local estimation and not for global estimation. In the past, kriging was frequently compared with other existing tools in its performance on global estimation. Such results were nearly identical due to the central limit theorem effect, which further prevented the acceptance of kriging by practitioners. The second point is that a single case study using an existing property, as it was frequently performed in the past, is not sufficient because results depend not only on the tool itself, but also on the nature of the mineralization.

THE development reported in this paper was begun by the author a number of years ago, while he was a lecturer on complex chemistry and metallurgy at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and in charge of that institution's research laboratory. Completion of the development and reduction to practice did not occur until last year at the Westport mill, laboratories and testing plant of the Dorr Company, where this method is now in general use for identifying and localizing the mineral constituents of both metallic and nonmetallic ores. It has proved to be a practical tool of the metallurgical staff at the Westport mill, devising unusual milling flowsheets for complex and refractory ore bodies. In a number of instances the findings have been successfully used as fundamental factors in the design and specification of complete metallurgical plants. Seven examples of the use of this method in solving practical milling problems are included in this paper. GENERAL OUTLINE The microscopic study of an ore, at first only of scientific interest, has proved extremely useful both in practical geology and in ore dressing. The binocular magnifying lenses for rough observation of the products of an ore-dressing plant have been in use for a long time; but only within the last few years has a systematic microscopical examination of ore samples become a normal tool of any research laboratory dealing with ore-dressing problems. Such an investigation avoids considerable loss of time as well as empirical trials and useless experimentation. It will generally indicate the correct grinding and often will suggest the proper method of treatment. The petrographic determination of transparent minerals in thin sections, or even in grains, has been perfected, and very accurate methods have been devised to meet any requirement, such as Feodorof's rotating stage on the petrographic microscope. Almost all transparent minerals can be positively identified by their optical properties; i.e., isotropism, anisotropism, color, pleochroism, refractory index, cleavage, crystal form, birefringence, and others. The identification of opaque minerals is a much more difficult problem and can be done only by using polished specimens. Unfortunately, most of the valuable metallic ores, and even some of the nonmetallic ones, are not transparent; therefore it has been necessary to develop a special technique for the determination of these minerals. Some optical properties-for instance, isotropism, anisotropism, color, cleavage, reflecting power-are often adequate in roughly classifying the mineral. Only "reflecting power" is a measurable value, provided special photometric equipment (ocular photometer or Orcel's photoelectric cell) is available. "The leaching kinetics of zinc sulphide concentrate was studied under total pressures ranging from 0.3 MPa to 0.5 MPa and leaching temperatures ranging from 358 K to 378 K. The apparent activation energy of leaching reaction under different total pressures was calculated. The results show that for the extraction of zinc at low-temperature pressure leaching is controlled by an interfacial chemical reaction. This was supported mineralogical analysis of the leaching residue. The kinetic equation for low-temperature pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrate was further established by quadratic regression on the basis of shrinking core model.INTRODUCTIONThe Roast-Leach-Electrowinning Process (RLE) is the primary route for zinc production and responsible for more than 85% of the total zinc production (Souza et al., 2007). During the roasting of zinc concentrates, fugitive SO2 causes pollution. The prevention of SO2 emissions from the RLE process can be one of the challenges to this technology (Deller, 2005). In the 1980s, the Zinc Pressure Leach (ZPL) process changed the concept of zinc hydrometallurgy, in which zinc sulphide concentrate is directly leached at approximately 423 K and approximately 0.7 MPa oxygen overpressure and the sulphidic sulphur is oxidized into elemental sulphur so that the pollution by SO2 is completely avoided. Since 1981, five zinc plants have adopted the ZPL process either for expansion by integration with existing roasting facilities, or for the production of zinc without any roasting at all (Collins et al. 1994; Barth et al. 1998). The innovation of the ZPL process has made the zinc industries more competitive although it needs an autoclave. The direct leaching technology of zinc is still in development."

THE observation of the flow layers, or Lüders' lines, produced in mild steel when it is stressed into the plastic range often provides considerable useful information for the study of the fundamental mechanism of the plastic flow of metals. It is a commonly observed fact that as soon as the upper yield point in a mild-steel tensile-test bar is passed, an unstable condition develops in the equilibrium, the load on the testing machine drops and if the surface of the bar contains a thin mill scale, the latter begins to flake off rapidly along certain "lines." These "lines" are in reality traces of wedge-shaped flow layers and are formed by the intersection of the surface of slip and the surface of the bar. The average plane of the flow layer itself has been found by various experimenters to be inclined at an angle of approximately 45° to the axis of the test bar. In a body of more complicated shape stressed in possibly a different man-ner, the tangent planes to the flow layers at each point seem in many cases to be inclined at an angle of about 45° to the principal stress direc-tions at the point. As examples of the latter may be mentioned the logarithmic spirals obtained when a rivet hole is punched in a thin plate, or when a tube is subjected to internal pressure only, etc. Hence if the flow layers are observed from an experiment, the shear-stress trajectories -the curves indicating the directions of the maximum shearing stresses in the body-may then be approximately determined. Since the latter curves form an orthogonal family inclined at 45° to the principal stress directions, the family of principal stress trajectories, or the curves indicating the directions of the principal stresses, may be thus obtained. Although the discontinuous type of stress-strain curve at the yield point is commonly observed with test bars of mild steel, more recent experiments have shown that this is by no means the only material exhibiting this interesting phenomenon. A similar effect has been observed in zinc and cadmium crystals, by Becker and Orowan;1 in duralumin and other aluminum alloys, by Dawidenkow,2 Elam,3 Fell, and others; in copper and copper-alloy crystals, by Elam;5 in brass by Elam;5 in brass wires by deForest;6 in higher carbon steels, tungsten steel, and

The market for thermal coal has recently been growing rapidly and it is projected to continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Both the national and international markets often demand high Btu low sulfur thermal coal in order to minimize the cost of utilization and meet the environmental restrictions. High quality thermal coal can be prepared to compete in the utility market by desulfurizing the high Btu midwestern coal and blending it with low sulfur western coal which is usually low in Btu content. The methods that can be used for optimizing the coal preparation plant operating parameters for physically desulfurizing coal is presented.
