This is a subject which our Institute has made peculiarly its own. In the first volume of its Transactions the analysis of steel received attention, and every subsequent volume has borne witness to the acuteness and industry of our members in the investigation of this subject. The keynote mas struck, in this as in so many other lines of progress, by A. L. Holley, in his paper on " Tests of Steel," read at the Easton meeting of October, 1873 (Trans., ii., 116)—an essay which may rank as a classic by reason of .its elegant form, logical force, and clear prevision of all the bearings of its theme, Taken together with the brief report of the discussion which followed it (in which Dr. Drown emphasized the effects of heat-treatment and mechanical handling, and Dr. Sterry Hunt the importance of minute variations in chemical composition, and of possible isomeric and allotropic conditions), it constitutes, after the lapse of twenty-five years, an admirable and adequate introduction to the long list of technical papers which have succeeded it. Three years later came the epoch-making papers of Dr. C. B. Dudley on the relation between the chemical composition and physical properties of steel rails, which, with the voluminous discussion they evoked, constitute a special volume, published by the Institute, and full of useful suggestions. If Dr. Dudley could be induced to resume this investigation, he would doubtless be able to solve many points still uncertain or disputed. But I cannot undertake to review the history of this subject, as represented in our Transactions—still less to restate all the contributions to it which have been made in books or in papers before other technical societies, since the initiative was taken by the Institute. "Roasting of sulfide concentrates and refractory ores is an important process step in the production of metals and chemicals. Sulfides of iron, zinc, copper and other metals are oxidised with air between 600 and 1000¦C into metal oxides or sulfates and gaseous sulfur dioxide. Roasting of gold concentrates and ores is a typical processing step used to produce a porous calcine suitable for cyanide leaching. During roasting, elements posing problems are removed through: oxidation (carbon, sulfur, arsenic and antimony) or volatilisation (mercury, chlorides and tellurides, as well as arsenic and antimony).This paper focuses on the environmental aspect of roasting using fluidised bed technology. The approach is to show that roasting is an attractive solution for refractory ore pretreatment since, on the one hand, it is an efficient technique yielding high gold recovery rates, while on the other it is able to comply with current stringent international environmental regulations. In that respect, roasting is compared to alternative processes, ie pressure oxidation (POX), bio-oxidation (BIOX) and ultra-fine grinding (UFG). Roaster high gold recovery rates are ensured through roasting-leaching test work, which allows the derivation of respective roasting parameters that are easily achieved in an industrial plant. On the other hand, key elements of the roasting process are analysed, which make it an efficient and sustainable technology, ie the possibility for energy recovery, the removal of off-gas impurities during the different gas cleaning steps (handling of arsenic, mercury emissions and further hazardous dust and gas emissions) and the treatment of the SO2-gas in order to produce sulfuric acid, and finally the treatment of the effluent produced. The addition of a thallous salt to the cyanide leach of a calcined pyritic concentrate causes a marked increase in the"rate of extraction of gold. This probably is due to the activation of passive gold by.th,e. thallous ions'.''Lea'd, bismuth, and mercury salts, which should produce ' a, similai effect, fail to do so. It is postulated that'this latter result, together with'the reprecipitation of silver at low cyanide levels, is due to the presence of soluble sulphide. The use of thallous salts to reduce leaching time is discussed briefly.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.

Grinding in steel mills adversely affects the flotation removal of pyrrhotite from magnetite ores. To elucidate the effect of grinding media on the floatability of pyrrhotite, rest potential and short-circuit current measurements were made on electrode combinations of pyrrhotite-mild steel and pyrrhotite-stainless steel. Galvanic contact of pyrrhotite with mild steel increased the rate of surface reactions on pyrrhotite in air-exposed and oxygenated solutions. It was postulated that the formation of ' an iron hydroxide coating on the pyrrhotite adversely affected its floatability. Its formation was minimal when pyrrhotite was contacted with stainless steel. Fine magnetite particles caused slime coating on pyrrhotite surfaces by magnetic interaction and impaired the flotation of pyrrhotite.

A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 RC was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique and weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure errosion it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Erosive wear rates are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

10.5-1. Introduction. In the not-too-distant past, maintenance and the facilities for maintenance were considered a necessary evil to be given only secondary consideration in the development and planning of a surface mine operation. With the increasing sophistication of mining equipment and machinery, this concept has been replaced; and today's mine managers recognize that planning for adequate maintenance facilities is as important to a successful operation as a sound mining plan. This chapter will present the basic maintenance facilities and the fundamental considerations necessary to meet the varied requirements of surface mining. 10.5-2. Determination of Shop Facilities. The size, shape, and extent of maintenance facilities are contingent on the general mining plan, the location relative to outside facilities, and to the available capital. The type of construction employed is dependent on climatic conditions and preference. HAULAGE SYSTEMS. The type of haulage equipment used will dictate the kind of shops needed. Truck haulage requires entirely different facilities than rail haulage. Some mines will employ both systems, and can include hoists, skips, or conveyor belts in combination with locomotives or trucks. The requirements of each type will be discussed. MAINTENANCE ORGANIZATION. The pre-planning decision as to centralized maintenance vs. area maintenance, or a combination of both, will greatly affect the maintenance facilities required. A single pit with relatively short travel from shops to pit will probably have a centralized maintenance system. Heatings, fires and explosions in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland coal mines since 1972, are reviewed. Geological and mine settings are outlined. Where available, gas analysis and critical decisions are discussed. This paper updates work by NSW Department of Mineral Resources (1995) and the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy in a report on fires and explosion in Queensland coal mines (Richardson and Ham, 1996). Incident data has important applications in terms of evidence-based risk assessment and identifying key issues to be integrated into competency based training programs. Predictive indicators are reviewed in terms of coal parameters in seams where the incidents occurred.

Renison Limited produces high and low grade tin concentrates at an annual rate of 5000 tonnes of contained tin metal. In spite of the fine average cassiterite grain size, emphasis is placed on gravity concentration methods to produce a high grade final product. Cassiterite flotation is considered and operated as a gravity circuit scavenger responsible for approximately 15 percent of recovered tin metal as a fine grained low grade concentrate. Metallurgical problems mainly result from ore-type variations which may be aggravated by a number of circulating loads. The rationalisation of circuitry is being studied to provide more effective control by operators and to allow exploitation of current control and modelling techniques.

The performance of in situ, shallow water covers in controlling acid generation was evaluated at four recently decommissioned pyritic uranium tailings sites at Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada. The tailings are acid generating, having a pyrite content of approximately five to ten per cent and a very low to non-existent alkaline buffering capacity. Adverse market conditions led to the closure of all operating uranium mines in the early- to mid-1990s, followed by rehabilitation and decommissioning of mine and waste management facilities. In order to control acidic drainage, all new and active tailings areas at Denison, Quirke, Panel, Spanish-American and Stanleigh mine sites were re-engineered to provide in situ submersion of these tailings under shallow water covers. The tailings impoundment dams were upgraded and reinforced or in some cases reconstructed, to minimise seepages and provide a minimum 1 m depth of water cover. With the exception of Stanleigh mine, which was closed in 1996 and rehabilitated during the late-1990s, the water covered Tailings Management Areas (TMAs) at other sites have been in operation for a period of six to nine years. The surface water quality at these sites is maintained at near neutral pH conditions by periodic addition of lime slurry to the established water covers. Additional treatment of effluent is provided as required to meet the discharge water quality standards. The performance of the established water covers at the sites was evaluated by analysing the annual equivalent limestone consumption data. The results were compared with the performance of an older, decommissioned Nordic TMA, which was rehabilitated using revegetation techniques. The water covers at these sites are performing as designed and acid generation has been reduced to low levels. Based on the total amount of yearly equivalent limestone required to maintain water quality in the water cover and at the effluent treatment plant, it is concluded that acid generation rate at the Denison TMA has reduced to less than 0.15 per cent of its pre-water cover conditions during normal operation and rehabilitation periods. In comparison to the revegetated Nordic TMA, the acid generation rates at Denison and Panel TMAs have decreased to less than 1.6 per cent of that at the Nordic TMA. The acid generation rate at the Quirke TMA was comparable or only slightly lower than that at the Nordic TMA because of its unique terraced cell configuration, having tailings in five hydraulically interconnected cells at different elevations. Historic acidity and oxidation reaction products, accumulated during normal operating and pre-water cover periods, are flushing from upstream locations to downstream cells, thus requiring much higher equivalent limestone additions for acid neutralisation and effluent treatment.

Micropiles are ideally suited to seismic retrofit applications. Their high tensile and compressive capacity can sustain the large concentrated loads induced during seismic events. Micropiles can be drilled through and grouted into the wide variety of soil and rock materials encountered in seismically active zones, using equipment that operates effectively within existing structures. Micropiles have seen increased acceptance and are now widely specified for retrofit work in the San Francisco Bay Area. While installation equipment and the structural configuration of micropiles have been largely unchanged since the early 1990?s, market forces have pressured both engineers and contractors to continually optimize the cost and performance of seismic upgrades. Instead of the contractor simply developing stronger, stiffer and cheaper micropiles as isolated structural elements in response to a specification, focus has shifted to maximizing the efficiency of micropiles within the overall foundation system. The case history of seismic retrofit project in Berkeley, CA is presented to illustrate the collaboration between designers and drilling specialist which resulted in a structurally efficient and cost effective design. The seismic retrofit program for this 6-story concrete building was developed through careful consideration of the geotechnical and structural mechanisms of resistance, in combination with the deformation response of high capacity micropiles (2670 kN) under ultimate loading conditions. This case history describes the interactive project development emphasizing performance-based design and field testing to optimize the micropile foundations and the overall structural system.

THE following is not offered as an extended paper on the subject of shaft sinking, but more as a description of the present practice of shaft sinking in the Butte district. The Anaconda company is sinking at present the following shafts: Badger State, Moose, Mountain Consolidated, Mountain View, Pennsyl-ania and Tropic. At the High Ore and Leonard mines the shafts are being deepened by sinking two compartments and will subsequently be enlarged to the full working size by raising alongside the compartments which are now being sunk. The following other companies are also sinking shafts: Butte-Alex Scott, Butte and Zenith City, Boston and Corbin, North Butte Mining Co. (at the Granite Mountain shaft), East Butte Co. (at the Pittsmont shaft), and the Rainbow Lode Development Co. Shaft Timbering. The shafts of the Butte district, generally speaking, are of three compartments arranged in a straight line, and the pump compartment is usually arranged for the use of an auxiliary hoisting cage, as well as for carrying pipe lines and electric wires. The Rainbow shaft is practically square, and of three compartments. The length of the shafts outside of timber will vary from 17 to 22 ft., and the width from 6 ft. 6 in. to 7 ft. Fir timber is used in all shaft work. This may be obtained from the Coast, when it is known as Coast fir, or from Idaho or Montana, when it is known as native fir. The native fir seems to be the tougher wood, but it is hard to obtain clear lumber in the lengths and sizes necessary for shaft work. Some of the shaft timber of the Anaconda company has been treated with creosote as a preservative, but this practice has not come into general use, as the ground of the camp is so heavy that the timbers usually crush before they rot. The size of timber most .used for shaft work is 12 by 12 in., while 10 by 12 in., 10 by 14 in. and 12 by 14 in. are used for some of the special pieces around the shaft. The new Leonard shaft is timbered with 14 by 14 in. wall plates throughout.

This paper was prepared at the request of Capt. A. F. Lucas, Chair man of the Institute's Committee on Petroleum and Gas; as a pre1iminary.discussion of the fuel oils which are used in the Southwest, giving their composition, uses, prices, etc. Should it afterward be found desirable, these observations may be extended over a larger area. In this connection, I suggest that samples of all kinds of fuel oils, including various tars, from all over the country, be collected and sent to some testing laboratory for examination. We would be glad to extend the facilities of the laboratory of the Bureau of Economic Geology and Technology, at the University of Texas, for this purpose, and to do the work free of all expenses. After such examinations are made and the results classified and studied, it would be possible to suggest specifications under which fuel oils should be purchased, and to arrive at some conclusions respecting the uniformity of such specifications, with due allowance for climatic and other more or less local conditions. While such specifications do not now depart from a common standard anything like as much as specifications for illuminating oils do, yet there are discrepancies which should not exist. Some of these discrepancies are of lessening importance, due to the pronounced tendency to distill every crude oil that can be distilled with profit, and to send residues into the market for fuel oil. Residues from the refineries are of a more uniform chemical composition and physical nature than many of the crude oils that go direct into the fuel market. The lower flash-point oils are disappearing from the fuel trade and in place of them we are getting oils that do not flash below 220" F., nor burn under 320" F. In the Southwest, it has not been long since we had fuel oils that flashed as low as 110" F., and the average flash point over a considerable period was 151" F. Now we are using oil that flashes at about 30" lower than the former burning point, which was 258" F. In other words, the flash point has risen, on the average, 100"; and the burning point about 75".

The cross-measure borehole technique is being studied by the Bureau of Mines as an alternative to the use of surface gob boreholes as a means of controlling methane in gobs during longwall mining. Small-diameter holes are drilled from underground locations into strata overlying the mined coalbed. When the roof strata are fractured by the mining opera- tion, a partial vacuum applied to the boreholes draws the methane out of the fractured strata and prevents it from entering the mine ventilation system. Tests in the Upper Kittanning Coalbed showed that 50 pct of the methane produced by the longwall mining operation was captured by the cross-measure boreholes. Borehole inclination and penetration into the gob are two important borehole parameters that affect the performance of the cross-measure borehole system.

The Eneabba deposit, located 280 km north of Perth, Western Australia, and 30 km inland (Fig. 1) is one of the most recently developed deposits of mineral sands in the world. The area has been in production since 1974, while the Associated Minerals Consolidated Limited (AMA) operation commenced production in 1976. Total ore reserves of close to 400 million tonnes contain about 40 million tonnes of heavy minerals (proved and probable).

Two papers have been written previously concerning operations at the Montreal East plant of Canadian Copper Refiners Limited. The first one,1 written in 1932, described silver-refinery operations at the time for producing silver and gold bullion from tankhouse anode slimes; the second,2 published in 1933, consisted of a description of the entire plant. Since publication of these papers the refinery has become the world's largest producer of refined selenium. The first selenium was produced in August 1934. Tellurium production on a commercial scale followed in October 1935. This paper will deal with selenium and tellurium production and also with present operations in the silver refinery. Blister cakes from Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Flin Flon, Manitoba, and commercial anodes from Noranda Mines Limited, Noranda, Quebec, are refined at Montreal East. Both these bullions have unusually high gold, selenium and tellurium content. The average assay of raw slimes produced from domestic and Noranda anodes is about 40 per cent Cu, 3600 oz. per ton Ag, 800 oz. per ton Au, 22 per cent Se and 3.7 per cent Te. EARLY SILVER-REFINERY OPERATIONS From the start of operations in 1931 until July 1934, the raw slimes were oxidize-roasted at 700° F. in a Nichols-Herreshoff furnace, acid¬leached with tankhouse discarded foul electrolyte (20 per cent H2SO4), filtered and charged directly to the doré furnace for refining to doré metal. This is the customary method for treating tankhouse anode slimes but was not suitable at the Montreal East plant because of the high selenium and tellurium content of our slimes. In the acid-leaching process about 50 per cent of the selenium and tellurium in the roasted slimes was dissolved in the electrolyte. The flash furnace is used for smelting concentrate to (i) high-Cu matte and (ii) molten metallic copper. It is also used for converting solidified/crushed matte to molten metallic copper. This is flash converting. It consists (Table 20.1, Fig. 20.1) of: (a)tapping molten 65 to 72% Cu matte from a flash smelting furnace (b) granulating the molten matte to ?1/2 mm particles in a 103 m3/hour water torrent (c) crushing the granulated matte to 50 µm in a vertical roller mill (d)drying the crushed matte (e) feeding the dry particulate matte to a second flash furnace for oxidation converting to molten copper. In 2000, flash converting is being used by Kennecott Utah Copper (George, et al; 1995; Newman et al, 1998, 1999a,b). A second installation is being designed for the Chuquicamata smelter (www.outokumpu.com [October 12, 2000]), The potential uses of flash converting are: (a) as the second half of a flash smelting/flash converting coppermaking sequence (b) as a continuous converting alternative to batch submerged tuyere converting. This chapter uses our flash furnace matrix to determine the %O2-in-blast, industrial oxygen and oil requirements for converting solidified 65% and 72% Cu matte to molten copper. It then discusses choice of feed matte grade and other aspects of the process.

This paper summarises the influence of slurry rheology on the grinding throughput of batch laboratory and continuous plant-scale mills operating in open and closed circuit configurations. The results of controlled changes in percent solids, particle size, slurry temperature, and viscosity control chemicals are demonstrated. An underlying rheological explanation of the above factors is offered which involves tying the specific rates of breakage that are occurring in the mill with the specific rheological character that the slurry is exhibiting at any given set of operating conditions. Some industrial scale operating guidelines are presented which have proven useful in increasing the net pro- duction capability of grinding circuits.

Weak shales refer to those with lower strength, thinly- laminated structure, sensitivity to moisture and weathering as well as significant time dependent behavior. It has been said that many future coal reserves with good quality have weak immediate roofs. Therefore their geo-mechanical properties and behavior must be known before an appropriate support plan can be designed. In this study, four types of shales collected from underground coal mines were tested in the laboratory. Their modes of failures in underground were observed and correlated with their lab behavior. The failure mechanisms of thinly-laminated weak shales were analyzed by the means of numerical modeling.
