Os aços inoxidáveis duplex e superduplex são caracterizados por uma estrutura bifásica contendo ilhas de austenita precipitadas numa matriz de ferrita. Estes aços possuem boas propriedades mecânicas e boa resistência à corrosão. No entanto, estes aços podem apresentar fragilização por hidrogênio. No desenvolvimento deste trabalho se estudou a difusão e fragilização por hidrogênio de um aço inoxidável superduplex SAF 2507 nos estados como recebido e tratado térmicamente. Para avaliar a influência da microestrutura sobre a difusão do hidrogênio foram realizados ensaios de permeação electroquímica de hidrogênio. Observou-se que o coeficiente de difusão aparente aumenta em função da temperatura de recozimento. A influência de hidrogênio na resistência à fratura do material recozido a 1300°C foi estudada a partir de ensaios de tenacidade à fratura (CTOD). Determinou-se que a resistência à fratura do material diminui consideravelmente quando o mesmo é submetido a uma carga de hidrogênio. A presença de hidrogênio também modificou o mecanismo de fratura do material, observou-se uma fratura completamente dúctil no material que foi testado em ausência de hidrogênio e uma fratura frágil, caracterizada por clivagem, foi observada no material hidrogenado. Determinou-se que a fase austenítica pode ser fragilizada sob certas condições de carga de hidrogênio.

Discussion of the paper Of JAMES JOHNSTON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 85, January, 1914, pp. 107 to 133. CHAIRMAN E. GIBBON SPILSBURY.-I would like to call attention to the fact shown in this paper that less than five years or perhaps seven years ago nobody had thought it possible to cyanide with success silver ores. The cyaniding of silver and gold ores was first of all started in Mexico, and gradually extended to this country in the case of the silver ores alone. The average extraction, I think, for the metals in Mexico, in the case of the silver ore, is less than 85 per cent., whereas here, in the case of a very complex ore, carrying a high percentage of sulphur and arsenic, and other objectionable elements, the ore has been treated so as to extract an average of 95 per cent. of the silver contents of the ore. It is really a phenomenal revolution in the metallurgy of silver ores which has been demonstrated and worked out at the Nipissing mines. GEORGE A. PACKARD, Boston, Mass.-I would like to suggest a slight modification, perhaps, of the statement which is made that no one considered cyaniding of silver ores up to five, or perhaps seven years ago, because in 1897, when I was at Mercur, Utah, one mill near there was operating on silver ores. It did not operate very successfully from a commercial standpoint, because they did not have a great deal of ore, but the extraction, I was told, was very satisfactory, and I am quite confident that it was, because, as suggested by the name, Chloride Point, the ores were silver chloride ores, and of course very easily soluble. Some years before that, in 1892, I made some tests myself. I spent three months making tests on more or less complex silver sulphide ores at Virginia City, Mont., and while our tests on the plain sulphide ores, finely ground, were quite successful, on account of the presence of a small amount of copper we did not work out a satisfactory solution of the problem at that time; although since then a cyanide plant has been erected and for at least eight years these ores have been treated by cyaniding at Virginia City, and the mill is still in operation. The period of five to seven years should, therefore, be modified considerably, in justice to the pioneers in the cyanide processes. REGINALD E. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a test procedure to compare the initiating strength of detonators by using adjustable-sensitivity liquid explosives. Various tests of detonator strength are currently used by the industry, but many of them do not quantify the ability of detonators to initiate detonation reactions in an explosive charge. The USBM used mixtures of nitromethane and ethylene diamine, the sensitivity being "fine-tuned" by 2-nitropropane. Military standard J-2, commercial No.6, and commercial No.8 detonators were evaluated using three test configurations: (1) axially immersed in the test explosive, (2) tip just touching surface of the explosive, and (3) immersed transversely in the explosive. Markedly different results were obtained for these three configurations, indicating that the directional effects are important. This explains why different detonator strength tests do not correlate well with each other. Some tests, such as the sand bomb and underwater, measure the total energy out-put, while other tests, such as the plate dent, test measure the energy in the axial direction. The USBM's test data indicate the importance of conducting the experimentation in the manner in which the detonator is actually intended to function.

Most of the iron ore washing plants set up in India consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers followed by multi-stage hydrocycloning of screw classifiers? overflow. The underflow of the hydrocyclones forms the concentrate which is used for pellets making. As the cut-point of hydrocyclones is generally at 20 microns, relatively lower diameter cyclones in a cluster with parallel feeding are used. This is found to, often, result in choking of the spigots, at times, by extraneous material as well reporting along with the slurry. It is observed to lead to sub-optimum performance of the cyclones with loss of iron values into cyclone overflow and thereafter into tailings. Analysis of data of an operating beneficiation plant (Beneficiation Plant - 1, BP - 1) of M/s Jindal South West (JSW) Steel Limited, Karnataka, India over a period of one year indicated that weight recovery of the concentrate from two-stage hydrocycloning was 45% (with respect to feed to the cyclones) and assaying 63.43% Fe, 4.43% SiO2 and 2.32% Al2O3. CSIR - National Metallurgical Laboratory - Madras Centre (NML - MC), India developed flotation process for processing screw classifier overflow with a view to improve the recovery of ultrafine iron values from it. Detailed investigations at laboratory scale flotation column and on-site pilot plant trials proved that the production of the concentrate and productivity of the plant could be enhanced by adopting reverse cationic column flotation technology. It was established that a typical screw classifier overflow analyzing 60.54% Fe, 5.95% SiO2 and 3.67% Al2O3 could be upgraded to 64.21% Fe, 2.64% SiO2 and 2.20% Al2O3 with 82.7% weight and 84.7% Fe recovery. This translates into an increase of 80% in weight recovery of the concentrate compared to what is being obtained, at present, by two-stage cycloning. It had an added advantage of reduced SiO2 in the concentrate. Thus, SiO2 in the final concentrate could be reduced to 2.64% from 4.43% by adopting column flotation. The concentrate so generated meets the stringent specifications, especially in terms of alumina in it(should be less than 2.50%) for pellets making. Later, JSW Steel Limited set up the flotation plant in BP - 1 based on the process developed by NML - MC and was commissioned in 2010. "In the last decade Afitex developed the Draintube™ geocomposite, which provides simultaneous drainage and waterproofing functions. This new type of drain tubes planar geocomposites (DTPG) differs from other geocomposites as the drainage core is composed of multiple corrugated and perforated pipes instead of biaxial or triaxial nets. It is furthermore associated with needle-punch stitched layers of non-woven geotextiles, which act either as capillary mediums or as filters.In this paper, the structure of the Draintube™ drainage composite is presented along with its key properties and the drainage mechanism associated with its particular structure.The relevance of this kind of structure is then reviewed based on past and current laboratory bench evaluations and field installations for mining applications such as the covering of acid rock drainage (ARD) tailings for the Central Manitoba Mine (Canada) site-rehabilitation; and as a pregnant solution collection layer in heap leach pads.Some of the demonstrated critical advantages of Draintube™ in the mining industry are as follows: reduction of the thickness, hence lower volume of granular drain layers improvement of fluid and gas collection and reduction of the hydraulic load reduction of secondary collector network mechanical protection of the sealing membrane fast and economical installation of interlifts stability under extreme conditions (compression, temperature, pH) increased stability of entire covering system and reinforcement of protection of dykes filtration of the covered material customised drainage positive connection of the geocomposite to collector pipes enable leaks detection (using a conductive textile layer) with an electrical test.CITATION:Saunier, P, Ameglio, L and Durkheim, Y, 2015. O consumo de refratário na produção de aço é parte significativa no custo de produção. Por este motivo, é usual nas aciarias a oxigênio empregar os processos de slag splashing e slag coating, visando à formação de uma camada de escória sobre o refratário de MgO-C. Os dois procedimentos diferem, principalmente, pelo seu objetivo: o slag splashing visa a proteção do revestimento como um todo, enquanto o slag coating busca proteger principalmente o fundo do conversor e as ventaneiras do sopro combinado. Para a efetividade destes processos, é necessário adequar a escória para que a camada formada resista a temperatura e condições do processo, seja compatível quimicamente com o refratário e tenha boa aderência ao tijolo do forno. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados do desenvolvimento de um modelo matemático que orienta quanto a adição para o tratamento do revestimento refratário do conversor pela projeção de escória.

Argonne National Laboratory is conducting research to develop a cost-effective and environmentally acceptable process for the separation of high-value plastics from discarded household appliances. The process under development has separated individual high purity (greater than 99.5%) acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) from corruningled plastics generated by appliance-shredding and metal-recovery operations. The process consists of size-reduction steps for the commingled plastics, followed by a series of gravity- separation techniques to separate plastic materials of different densities. Individual plastics of similar densities, such as ABS and HIPS, are further separated by using a chemical solution. By controlling the surface tension, the density, and the temperature of the chemical solution, we are able to selectively float/separate plastics that have different surface energies. This separation technique has proven to be highly effective in recovering high-purity plastics materials from discarded household appliances. A conceptual design of a continuous process to recover high-value plastics from discarded appliances is also discussed. In addition to plastics separation research, Argonne National Laboratory is conducting research to develop cost-effective techniques for improving the mechanical properties of plastics recovered from appliances.

Algumas qualidades de aço UltraBaixo Carbono têm exigido teores de fósforo cada vez mais baixos. Quando se obtém teor de fósforo fim de sopro no convertedor acima dos níveis exigidos pelo cliente, faz-se necessário realizar um retrabalho na corrida ou promover desvios, utilizando-a em aços para outras aplicações. Para reduzir ainda mais o teor de fósforo durante o vazamento do aço do convertedor para a panela desenvolveu-se uma escória sintética desfosforante a ser utilizada quando o teor de fósforo não atende ao especificado no fim de sopro. Foram comparadas corridas com utilização da escória sintética e corridas utilizando somente cal. Obteve-se um aumento de 28,2 pontos percentuais na taxa de remoção de fósforo durante o vazamento com a utilização da escória sintética. Diante dos resultados obtidos, o produto foi aprovado para utilização na Aciaria 2 da Usiminas Ipatinga

"A South American nickel mine has been producing a nickel concentrate that also contains copper and iron (15 percent nickel, 5 percent copper, 28 percent iron) for the end use of stainless steel production. A critical specification for the quality of the steel is the iron to magnesium oxide ratio (Fe:MgO), with a ratio of below 3.5:1 having a substantial impact on the nickel value. This nickel concentrate producer historically mined the sulfur-rich mineral pyroxenite but had been forced to move to a magnesium oxide/silicate (MgO/SiO4)-rich mineral harzburgite, resulting in nickel recovery being reduced to around 50 percent to maintain the required Fe:MgO ratio. In this study, ore mineralogy, water chemistry and the chemistries associated with the flotation process were evaluated in an effort to increase nickel recovery while maintaining the Fe:MgO ratio according to specification. New chemistry was introduced with the specific goal of complexing with the MgO and retarding its interaction with the bubble flow in the flotation process.IntroductionGlobal nickel production in 2011 totalled to 1,770,000 tons, according to the Raw Materials Group (2013). From 1950 to 2005 there was an aggregate 4.4 percent increase in nickel production, with a market-value high of $1,000/ton nickel reached in 1998 (Mudd, 2010). Approximately 65 percent of nickel production is consumed by the stainless steel industry, with 12 percent of the remainder used in super alloys or nonferrous alloys. Nickel imparts corrosion resistance, temperature resistance and other benefits to its alloys (Table 1) (Oberg, 1996; Cáceres, 2003). The dominant types of nickel-bearing ores are classified as either laterites (limonite: nickel-iron oxide; and garnierite: nickel hydrosilicate) or magmatic sulfide deposits (pentlandite: iron-nickel sulfide) (U.S. Geological Survey, 2013a, 2013b). In 2012, about 40 percent of the nickel ore mined was sulfidic-type ores and about 60 percent was laterite. The processing of laterite ore is expected to continue to increase as the availability of sulfidic ores continues to decline."

Data are presented on the global warming issue to reinforce the decision by the U.S to reject the Kyoto protocol. The evidence that CO2 is a problem rather than a benefit is inconclusive and will be discussed in this paper. Nevertheless, for economic reasons alone, the US steel industry will continue to minimize CO2 emissions (and the release of real pollutants) per ton of steel through energy reduction programs. However, relative to inevitable increases in absolute CO2 emissions from the utility industry and the transportation sector, future reductions by the steel industry will be inconsequential in the "big picture."

The Iron Ore Company (IOC) of Canada Mining and Operations Departments expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1 m × 1 m × 1 m) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment, and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine and to date has significantly improved upon baseline measures.One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion into the blastholes provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduced the infi ltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rock mass. Blast results showed reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muck piles. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realised.To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used shovel based camera technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A digital vision system (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with global positioning system (GPS) locations. A large population of digital images was analysed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

Orebodies at or near the surface are generally amenable to open pit mining. The development of a mining program involves designing an ultimate pit and a production schedule. This pit maximizes total profit while the production schedule maximize6 the present value of the property. Optimum pit limits can be approximated by two-and three-dimensional numerical techniques. These techniques presuppose that the mineralized area has been sufficiently sampled to allow a reasonably accurate prediction of grade at any spatial location.

Outotec has developed an operator training simulator (OTS) platformsuitable for various hydrometallurgical processes. The complete solution is run in the cloud, where virtual client instances can be managed on-demand. The aim is to build a generalizable model that produces coherent results even when operating outside of ideal parameters, allowing the operator to train in unsteady state conditions such as start-up and shutdown. Complex software products are commonly associated with significant development time and cost. Utilizing modular software architecture, only the control system and processmodel are tailored for theOTS,whereas modules such as user administration and cloud-based client machine spawning can be imported, shortening development time. A generic acidic pressure oxidation process (POX) operator training simulation consisting of feed preparation, autoclave, dual-stage flash evaporation and off-gas scrubbing is described. Process is simulated using Outotec HSC Sim 9 process simulator and controlled by Siemens Simatic PCS7 control system.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar e comparar a composição química e microestrutura de dois fabricantes (nacional e importado) de haste femoral fabricados em aço inoxidável austenítico ABNT NBR ISO 5832-9. As análises químicas dos principais elementos foram realizadas utilizando espectrometria de emissão ótica por descarga luminescente. A microestrutura das hastes foi caracterizada por microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e difração de raios X. Medidas de dureza Vickers também foram realizadas neste estudo comparativo. As hastes nacionais e importadas exibiram pequena quantidade de partículas de nitreto (fase Z) dispersas na matriz austenítica e tamanhos de grão similares da austenita. Por outro lado, o aumento de 32% observado nos resultados de dureza da haste importada em relação à haste nacional foi atribuído às diferenças de composição química entre estas hastes. Foram identificadas microinclusões ricas em Al nas hastes importadas e microinclusões ricas em Mg nas hastes nacionais. Embora tenham sido observadas algumas diferenças entre as hastes nacionais e importadas, ambas atenderam os critérios de composição e microestrutura da norma ABNT NBR ISO 5832-9.

Due to its versatility and low cost, polypropylene (PP) is one of the most widely used polymers in the world, consequently in research and development of new products. The polypropylene modified was prepared by gamma irradiation in acetylene at 12.5 kGy dose, technical polymer also known as high-melt-strength-polypropylene (HMSPP). It was mixed with montmorillonite (MMT) clay and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for bactericide activity. HMS-Polypropylene-clay-silver nanocomposites were manufactured using twin-screw extruders. Those materials were prepared by a melt mixing process via twin screw extrusion with a wide range of processing conditions. The polypropylene nanocomposites (PPNC) surfaces were exposed to gamma-radiation (60Co) source in presence of nitrogen as inert atmosphere at 1; 3; 5; 10; 20 and 50 kGy doses for modified the surfaces in order to enhance biocide activity. The samples surfaces were characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDX) and evaluated by determination of bactericide effects. The results indicate the formation of structures predominantly intercalated of HMSPP nanocomposite. Contact tests for antibacterial activity of the hybrid polymer were applied against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) bacteria. The irradiations on the samples surfaces were insufficient to promote activity on contact biocide tests.

South African coal discards derived from feed coal for thermoprocesses pose human health and environmental problems and incur high disposal costs. These issues need to be resolved. Coal fines and a coal fines/ K2CO3 blend were combusted at 700°C in a laboratory rotary kiln to produce ashes containing metakaolinite (Al2O3.2SiO2) and illite/muscovite/orthoclase amorphous materials. The blend ash and coal fines ash, containing 18% K2O and <1% K2O respectively, were leached with water and with 1 M and 8 M NaOH at 80°C for 4 hours using a solid to liquid ratio of 1:5. The 8 M NaOH leach yielded 17% sodalite (Na8Si6Al6O24(OH)2) formation through SiO32-, Al(OH)4-, and Na+ precipitation in the leached ashes. The 1 M NaOH leach yielded no sodalite. X-ray fluorescence analysis of the original ashes and leached ashes showed low Al and Si dissolution efficiencies due to the sodalite formation. Sequential NaOH leaching resulted in the highest potassium dissolution efficiency of 89% for the ashes of fines/K2CO3 blend and 59% for the fines. It may be possible to increase the ash-derived zeolite concentration by using even higher NaOH concentrations (12–20 M NaOH) during leaching. Sodalite derived from coal ash could possibly be utilized for water purification in industrial applications, or as molecule separators. The potassium-containing liquid could be used in fertilizer manufacture.

Atualmente, tecidos de fibras sintéticas como a aramida (Kevlar®) e o polietileno (Dyneema®) têm sido os preferidos para proteção balística contra munições leves, e para integrar sistemas de proteção contra calibres superiores, como o 7,62 mm. Porém, por apelos econômicos, ambientais e da disponibilidade limitada destes produtos, materiais alternativos têm sido testados. Neste cenário, destacam-se os compósitos reforçados com fibras naturais, que têm demonstrado bom desempenho balístico. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o desempenho individual de compósitos reforçados com fibras naturais de curauá, quando submetidos ao impacto balístico com munição 7,62 mm. Foram executados ensaios balísticos, medindo-se a energia do projétil absorvida pelos materais, e os resultados tratados estatisticamente por Anova e teste de Tukey. Mostrou-se que estes compósitos têm potencial para substituir as fibras sintéticas em sistemas de blindagem para proteção pessoal, com a vantagem de serem materiais leves, de baixo custo, nacionais, de ampla disponibilidade e ambientalmente corretos.

A metallic displacement process, utilizing easily available steel wool or steel window screen, was devised and successfully used for the recovery of silver from waste photographic fixing solutions. Laboratory and prolonged commercial-scale testing established that the iron filament type unit will efficiently precipitate silver, as a high-grade sludge, from acidic waste photographic fixing solutions ranging in grade from less than 1 to over 10 grams of silver per liter. Data and design information are presented to facilitate the construction and operation of a practical unit of any desired size. A smelting process for recovering pure silver from precipitated sludge containing 27 to 80 percent silver was devised.

Belt conveyor transfers are the most likely location for high wear rates and failures. Belt transfers are necessary to change the direction of conveyed material and will remain a part of belt conveyor systems into the future. Burden being accelerated due to fall and changes in direction from one system to the next, prevents steady state flow which introduces component fatigue. The conveyor belt is considered the greatest cost item over the life of a belt conveyor system and consumes considerable downtime to replace, therefore a financial incentive exists to preserve this high-cost item. Other issues created at the transfer include health risks of uncontained dust and product losses due to spillage. Additional consideration to support the belt is one way to improve the life of components and contain dust within the transfer chute. The humble impact cradle/bed has changed little over the years whilst conveyor systems have achieved ever greater flow rates. Further development of the impact cradle is an opportunity to reduce maintenance costs and increase uptime. The peak technology on the market for conventional impact belt support is the dynamic impact cradle, which ensures the belt support area under the chute allows for some dynamic travel, whilst also maintaining a consistent skirt board area. The impact energy at a transfer when installed with Kinder Australia’s dynamic impact belt support system was measured to further understand the forces involved and how they compare with static belt support systems. Adding further dynamic capacity to the load zone has been shown to increase belt life by at least 30 per cent. Other components also benefit from reducing impact energy in the transfer and the incorporation of polyurethane bushes at roller supports has been employed further increase roller and frame life. Crone Geophysics Limited in co-operation with Newmont Exploration Limited has developed a ground Pulse electromagnetic method. This is the first unit in a planned integrated system of surface and borehole Pulse EM equipment. Newmont had previously developed an operational Pulse EM unit for use in areas of very high surface conductivity. The Newmont equipment was large, heavy apparatus that required motorized transport. It operated in the equivalent frequency spectrum of 10Hz to 2.5Hz. The basic aim of Crone Geophysics was to design a Pulse EM system more portable than Newmont&apos;s. We wanted to operate in all types of field conditions including heavily wooded and mountainous terrain areas. We also wanted to record the higher frequency information that is contained in the Pulse EM waveform. There are three reasons why we thought this high frequency information was important in survey applications: (1) Field tests conducted over massive sulphide bodies in the Arizona desert showed that the desert weathering process tended to break down the electrical contact between sulphide crystals. The net effect is to reduce the conductivity of a massive sulphide body, particularly narrow bodies or highly fractured sulphide zones. In order to detect such occurances the higher frequency information is essential. (2) We wanted to be able to detect occurances with sulphide content as low as 5% sulphides that are usually poor to moderate conductors. (3) We also wanted to be able to determine the presence and extent of surficial conductive formations and clay deposits since many airborne EM anomalies are caused by such bodies. If we have the capability of detecting and recognizing these formations we would be able to explain the airborne anomaly.
