NiTi shape memory alloys (SMA) have been widely used as construction materials due to their shape memory and superelastic properties. Usually the application of the NiTi alloy is in the wire form, which is ideal shape to make springs, orthodontic arc-wire and endodontic files. Since our research group (ITASMART) started producing NiTi wires, it was noticed that NiTi SMA produced by Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) presents carbon contamination, which is due to the melting process. Therefore, alloys rich in carbon remove titanium from matrix, forming precipitates of TiC (titanium carbide). Also, Ti2Ni precipitation removes titanium from the matrix and these two precipitates TiC and Ti2Ni can produce internal volumetric defect in the wire drawing process. Seeing the importance of NiTi wires as base of many applications, this work studies the formation of volumetric defects caused by precipitates in the wire drawing process of a NiTi wire drawn down to 0,39 mm in diameter.

"Sulfidization-amine is the most effective method for the recovery of smithsonite (ZnCO3), however the interface interaction details remain unclear. The sulfidization-amine flotation mechanism of smithsonite has been studied by Density Functional based Tight Binding (DFTB+) method in this paper. The slab model of ZnCO3 (101) surface was built and the adsorptions of a monolayer of HS- and S2- ions were conducted to model the sulfidization effect on the ZnCO3 (101) surface adsorption. DDA hardly interacts with the hydrated ZnCO3 (101) surface. Under the low concentration of Na2S, HS- ions form a Zn-SH-SH structure on the ZnCO3 (101) surface, which hinders the interaction between DDA and surface Zn atoms. Under the high concentration of Na2S, a layer of ZnS is formed on ZnCO3 (101) surface, which is favorable for the adsorption of DDA on the surface. This is consistent with the flotation practice where smithsonite flotation requires a large amount of sodium sulfide. The results could provide a microscopic investigation into the sulfidization-amine flotation mechanism of smithsonite.INTRODUCTIONSmithsonite (ZnCO3) is an important and typical oxide mineral of zinc. It is a semi-soluble salt mineral with a solubility product constant of 1.46 × 10-10 (Weast, 1973). The most common and effective method to recover oxidized zinc ores is froth flotation (Caproni et al., 1979; Pereia and Peres, 2005; Kashani and Rashchi, 2008). It is well known that the flotation of oxidized zinc minerals is much more difficult than the flotation of zinc sulphide minerals (Hosseini and Forssberg, 2007).The recovery of zinc oxide ores with poor floatability attracts more and more attention due to the depletion of easy-recovered of zinc sulfide ores.Sulfidization-amine flotation, which using Na2S as sufidizing agent and amine as collector (Mckenna et al., 1949; Rey, 1954; Abramov, 1961; Rey, 1979; Hosseini and Forssberg, 2007). This method is the most successful technology used for zinc oxide minerals flotation in large-scale industrial applications since it was invented in the 1950s (Önal et al., 2005; Pereira and Peres, 2005). There have been numerous experimental researches on the sulfidization-amine flotation of smithsonite. Shi et al., (2013) studied solution chemistry of smithsonite flotation system. Feng and Wen (2017) studied the formation of zinc sulfide species on smithsonite surfaces and its response to flotation performance. Wu et al., (2017) investigated the sulfidization behavior of smithsonite with the use of zeta potential, inductively coupled plasma (ICP), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS). Their measurement results confirms the chemisorption of sulfur ions and the formation of ZnS film on the smithsonite surface after Na2S treatment, however the influence of HS- ions on the surface and the influence of sulfidization on the amine adsorption have not been discussed."

The underground metalliferous mining industry continues to change under the influence of many factors including, to name a few, new mining techniques and equipment, new approaches to risk management, more stringent safety and health standards, new employment practices and orebodies become deeper and often lower grade. In addition, the same technological revolution and plummeting cost of technology that has brought the GPS, smart phones and digital cameras to the general population is also working its way through the mining industry impacting on communications, automation and process control as well as introducing major efficiency and productivity dividends. However, not all factors are positive including, in particular, the issues of carbon costs and electrical power. This paper explores some of the trends affecting ventilation in hard rock mines, some of the existing and likely future challenges and some of the potential future solutions to these issues.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2013. "INTRODUCTION In December 1942, the-Bureau of Mines reported favorably on a proposal to grant Government assistance-in constructing an access road (consisting principally of a timber-pile bridge across the Rio Grande at Hot Springs, N. Mex.) to the property under lease to the United States Fluorspar Co. At that time the property was being developed actively, and there appeared to be no immediate-need for exploratory or metallurgical assistance by the Bureau of Mines.Because milling facilities were inadequate; the access-read project was eventually disapproved, but prior to disapproval the company had discontinued operations. In June 1943, exploration was resumed by the Humphreys Gold Corporation of Denver, which had subleased the property. Difficulty of access continued to interfere with exploratory progress. In July 1945, at the request of the lessee, the Bureau of Mines directed sampling, using company employees.At the completion of this sampling program, the Bureau of Mines concluded that the property was potentially a important source of fluorite but that further development for production appeared to depend largely on the establishment, by exploration, of adequate reserves. Because of the relatively easy position-of metallurgical-grade concentrate and ores, it also was deemed advisable to investigate the possibility of producing acid-grade concentrate from the ore, for which a demand was becoming evident. Accordingly, a program of trenching, diamond drilling, and metallurgical testing was undertaken by the Bureau. The results of its investigation are reported herein."

"While the uniaxial compressive strength of rock has been extensively investigated, the relation between the saturation and natural compressive strength is relatively unexplored. This paper studies on 1865 statistical data of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 6, which located in the Middle Jurassic of Shaximiao formation. The research focuses on the relation between the saturation and natural compressive strength. The statistical data are categorized and quantified in order to ascertain the softening properties of sandstone and sandy mudstone. The findings suggest that the saturation compressive strength is significant effected by its natural compressive strength, and an empirical formula is introduced to explain the relation. These findings have implications for researchers and engineer who concerned with Chongqing rail transit construction.INTRODUCTIONIn the engineering construction and surrounding rock classification, the uniaxial compressive strength index (Ministry of Water Conservancy, 1995; Ministry of Railways, 1999) is one of the essential parameters of rock mass. Usually, there are two types of the uniaxial compressive strength index, natural and saturation compressive strength, and the ratio of them is the softening coefficient. Most of the previous studies on rock strength had focused on the influence factors (Liu et al., 2008; Liu et al., 1998; Liu et al., 2013; Wang, 2013; Zhang et al., 2008; Zhang et al., 2010; Zeng & Lin, 2003) with experiment and in-situ tests. But few publications that reports a long and formal research project on the relationship between natural and saturation compressive strength. In order to figure out this issue, this study investigated the distribution of Solidity Classification of Rock Mass and softening coefficient based on the statistical data of Chongqing Rail Transit Line 1 and Line 6. Based on the analysis, an empirical formula was proposed to explain the relationship."

The passage of an ore pulp through the froth flotation process results in the production, after dewatering, of a finely divided concentrate. This intermediate product Trust be handled to the subsequent process facilities via belt or other types of conveyors, hoppers, bins, chutes and feeders, and the like, Flotation concentrate has some difficult handling properties such as abrasiveness, sluggishness when moist, or fluidity when dry, These characteristics require the judicious selection or design of handling, equipment and the careful engineering of transfer chutes. It is to the special problems which are encountered in this in-plant handling procedure that this paper is addressed. The methods which will be discussed have beer. developed primarily for the handling of the froth flotation concentrates of copper, leap, and taconite iron ores, but may be generalized, with appropriate modifications, to apply to other similar metallic concentrate&. The controlled feeding of concentrates frog: bins and hoppers is covered alone with some of the techniques used to transfer concentrates from ore belt conveyor to another. Methods are described for unloading belt conveyors into bins or storage tiles, The reclamation from storage piles is also treated.

Investing in a mining venture can be risky and stakeholders need transparent, unbiased reports to understand the Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves a mining company holds. Readability and textual choice can be used consciously to manipulate perceptions, or it can be done unconsciously. This exploratory study investigates the readability and textual choice of supplementary Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Reports of companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The results indicate that narrative manipulation occurs in these reports through word choices that make the reports difficult to read, as well as specific narrative selections. This reduces the informational value of the reports. The results of the study will be useful to various stakeholders, such as mining company management, investors, investment specialists, financial analysts, and even employees and the general community, who all use these reports to make important decisions. It is also useful for the preparers of the Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Reports, Competent Persons, and other technical specialists to be aware of readability and that certain textual choices can affect the interpretation of these reports. It is recommended that bodies such as the JSE and the SAMREC and SAMVAL Code committees consider adding a plain language requirement to regulations, guidelines, and codes to ensure transparent, unbiased, and objective reports.

Although the technology involved in removing material from below the earth's surface has a long history, communication systems in underground workings are relatively new to the industry. Communication equipment did not begin appearing in underground mines until the early 1900's. Figure 1-1 shows a miner using a Western Electric standard telephone set for underground mines in 1913. These early phones were essentially the same as those used aboveground, except that they were enclosed in cast-iron boxes as protection against moisture, acid fumes, and gases.

O desenvolvimento de impressoras 3D permitiu uma maior produção de peças e próteses médicas provenientes de polímeros termoplásticos como PLA e ABS, para produção de filamentos. Este trabalho avaliou as características mecânicas de próteses impressas, em determinada temperatura, de filamento PLA. Foram impressos diversos corpos de provas, para a realização de testes de tração, verificando que a configuração com densidade 100%, espessura de 0,4 mm e direção de impressão de 45° e 135° apresentou melhor resultado de resistência mecânica. Realizaram-se também, simulações matemáticas para análise de resistência à queda e flambagem. O conjunto de testes físicos e matemáticos determinou que o PLA não atendeu os requisitos para aplicação deste como próteses.

Os aços de alta resistência microligados ao nióbio tem se demonstrado uma solução ótima na fabricação de aços para utilização em perfis estruturais utilizando os conceitos já desenvolvidos para a indústria de gás e óleo. O nióbio com seu efeito refinador de grãos, com redução da temperatura de transformação entre austenitaferrita, endurecimento por precipitação e retardamento da recristalização da austenita, usado em equilíbrio com titânio, manganês e silício e os novos processos de produção com resfriamento controlado torna possível a obtenção de aços com microestrutura bainítica, baixo carbono e alta resistência mecânica. Este trabalho demonstra os pontos de destaque referentes ao projeto de estruturas utilizando estes aços, bem como uma avaliação quanto ao processo de soldagem durante a fabricação das mesmas. É possível evidenciar que a estrutura final se torna ideal para aplicação em diversos ambientes devido a sua baixa temperatura de transição dúctil-frágil, produção de uma estrutura com cerca de 10% a menos em peso, 5% a menos em custo e com excelente soldabilidade.

IT is now generally admitted by experts that at least so far as rapid progress is concerned the Alpine system of tunnel-driving is superior to any other. This is perhaps natural in view of the record of experience in driving tunnels through the Alps. These great mountain-chains cannot be treated in the ordinary way by shaft-sinking and driving headings, thus multiplying the points of attack. The work must be done from the ends only, hence speed in driving is of the utmost importance; and, as necessity is the mother of invention, the concentration of effort to make progress has resulted in an organization and in mechanical appliances that have produced results so much in excess of the usual practice, even in America, that a discussion of the subject in detail should be of much value to the engineer and contractor. The first Alpine tunnel was the Mont Cenis, length 7.5 miles, driven with a progress that averaged about 7.75 ft. per day. Next came the Saint Gothard, 9.5 miles long, 18 ft. per day; Arlberg, 6.5 miles long, 27.25 ft. per day; Simplon, 12.25 miles long, 36 ft. per day. The figures represent progress when driving from two headings, so that by dividing them in two we get the daily single-heading progress. The latest of the Alpine tunnels is the Loetschberg, now being driven. In this work the world's record has been beaten by a single day's record in one heading of 36 ft. and by an average daily record in. one heading of 29.5 feet. The Alpine range forms a natural barrier between a large section of northern and southern Europe. Laboratory tests were performed to explore the effects of frequency on the deformation property of rock salt subjected to cyclic loading under confining stress condition. A two-stage (transient and steady) evolution law of axial cumulative strain was obtained through cyclic stress-strain curves complied from the loci of minimum load of each cycle. The unloading modulus decreases with loading cycles/time as a negative exponential function. The damage of rock salt under cyclic loading is reflected by the degradation of elastic modulus. A unified damage evolution equation considering the effects of frequency and time was established based on the experimental results. A new creep damage model for rock salt was proposed by introducing the non-stationary modular components in Burgers creep equation according to the Lemaitre equivalent strain theory. Comparative study indicates that the new model can accurately describe the creep deformation and damage evolution of rock salt under different loading frequencies. This paper provides a more reasonable model and relevant mechanical parameters for the stability analysis of compressed-air storage cavern in the injection and withdrawal durations.

The ASTM B108 Mould and a Modified Mould were used to cast test bars under a variety of conditions: mould and pouring temperatures, mould coating and tilt. Mechanical properties were determined in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions. The ASTM Mould is less sensitive to casting variables. Enlarging the gating system and adding additional gates to the ASTM mould can improve properties in the tilt position. The reproducibility of properties in as-cast and T6 heat treated bars was investigated.

Investigations of the dispersion of gold in soils and stream sediments associated with three gold deposits in Thailand indicate the existence of different geochemical dispersion patterns in the three areas, demonstrating the need for the adoption of a variety of exploration techniques. The three gold deposits which were investigated were the Phu Tham Phra-Phu Thong Daeng copper-gold prospect, the Doi Tung and the Huai Hin Lab gold prospects. Overall the investigations at the three localities demonstrate clearly that the chances of exploration success can be significantly enhanced if composite soil samples are analysed to ensure a more reliable estimation of the gold content in soils and if both the 63 micrometre fraction and the field-panned concentrates of stream sediments are analysed because of the variable grain size of the gold characterising different gold deposits and surface environments.

By the very nature of mineral deposits the quality of the raw material generally fluctuates and should be known for optimum processing. Early classification, for example, of limestone into road-metal grade or lime grade or of run-of-mine ores into high grade, low grade and waste as well as information for blending or for dosage of reagents are prerequisite for economic processing. Non-contact, real-time and on-line rock identification or assessment of quality parameters can be realised by introducing the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) into the mining industry. LIF analysis is an optical method evaluating the basically known photoluminescence properties of matter, however, extending the application into hitherto unimagined fields by use of high-energy pulsed lasers and time-resolved analysis of fluorescence in the ultra-violet, the visible and near-infrared domains of light. LIF analysers and test work in a limestone quarry and a cement plant in Germany as well as in an iron ore mine in Sweden are described. First results of test work are available and proof this technology to be promissing.

"With the increase of mining depths, deep-seated coal seams face threats from high ground stresses, high gas pressures, high gas content, and low seam permeability, which significantly increase the likelihood of coal and gas outbursts. Challenges continue to grow in coalbed methane (CBM) extraction fields, especially for short-distance gassy multiple-seams. Research has proved that the most effective way to increase coal seam permeability is to decrease the ground stress. Protective seam mining technology is a surrounding rock control technology, which can effectively reduce the ground stress and increase the permeability of the protected coal seam. In this paper, we try to use upper protective seam mining technology to simultaneously extract coal and gas. Findings are based on a FLAC3D simulation of stress variation during the mining of the No. 12 coal seam in the Daxing coal mine, Tiefa Coalfield, China. Results indicate that, after mining the upper protective seam, the pressure-relief effects of the rock mass generated three belts and five zones below the protective seam, providing the space and time for gas pre-extraction engineering. Within the protected area, the numerical simulation indicates that the stress of the No. 13/14 coal seam reduces 95.84% and 88.25% respectively, while the expansion deformation of the protective seams reach 6.87 ‰ and 6.70 ‰ respectively, which demonstrate that the protective mining technology can provide a significant pressure-relief effect to the outburst-prone coal seam. Combining stress relief in this manner with pressure-relief from engineered gas drainage (performed by crossing boreholes from the floor rock roadway) applied before the mining of the protective seam, it would not only be beneficial to CBM drainage but also can reduce the gas outburst risk of the protected seams.INTRODUCTION Internationally, since France used protective seam mining technology to control coal and gas outburst in 1939, it has been promoted and applied in many countries (?????, 1966). Since 1958, China has taken the mining test and engineering practice of protective seam mining technology in the Beipiao, Tianfu, Nantong, Zhongliangshan, Songzao, Huainan, Huaibei, and other coalfields (Yu, 1992). Long-term theoretical research and mining practice of outbursts and dangerous coal seams show that protective seam mining technology is the most effective, safest, and most economical outburst prevention measure (Cheng, Fu, and Yu, 2009; Hu et al., 2008; Cheng and Yu, 2007). Under the condition of high gas content coal seams, the safety and efficiency of simultaneous extraction of coal and gas can be realized through a reasonable mining sequence and an effective gas extraction method (Cheng and Yu, 2003). The in situ stress distribution of the protective seam (No. 1 coal seam) and protected seam (No. 2 coal seam) during protective seam mining in the Haishiwan coalfield formation (Figure 1) (Li et al., 2014). A comparison of the stress and displacement (five zones and three belts) of the rock mass below the protective seam, and in a multiple-seam context in the Dalong Mine, is shown in Figure 2 (Jiang et al., 2015). After mining protection coal in a close-distance seam group, the small spacing between the coal seams causes the protective coal and the protected coal between part of the rock to crack through each other until the protective layer of gob is through the area. This provides a desorption of gas to the protective layer of the mining space channel, making the coal seam permeability increase to several hundred times and improving the gas discharge capacity (Zhai, 2008)."
