"For a good many years the Bureau of Mines and various state mining experi¬ment stations have endeavored to develop some method of utilizing the immense deposits of lignite in the United States. Work in relent year has indicated that the best method of this is to drive off the moisture and most of the volatile water from the lignite in some form of carbonizing apparatus leaving a residue high in fixed carbon and low in moisture and volatile matter, which by briquetting can be made into a high-grade fuel. The earlier forms of carbonizing equipment tried were complicated, costly to build and keep in repair, and could not be operated intermittently without being seriously damaged. During the year 1922, however the Bureau of Mines devised a very simple carbonizing oven which produces a uniformly well carbonized product. This oven is essentially a vertical shaft with means for supplying raw lignite at the top and discharging the carbonized limited at the lower end. Air in regulated amount is admitted to the shaft at two horizons, and a zone of combustion maintained through which the column of lignite passes. The lignite is thus carbonized by construction of its contained matter and a small proportion of its fixed carbon, leaving most of the fixed carbon in the carbonized product or ""char"". The degree of carbonization can be closely controlled by varying the volume of air supplied to the oven and the rate of travel of the charre down the shaft.The ""lignite char"" produced is a soft material resembling charcoal more than coal or coke, but somewhat harder than charcoal. "INCRAMUTE alloy (nominally 45Mn-53Cu-2Al wt. %) has a specific damping capacity as high as 0.4, through a solid-solution and aging treatment. The damping behavior of the alloy is highly temperature-dependent and shows a peak near room temperature. The inadequate strength in the high damping condition restrains the practical application of the alloy, as structural components. Ferromagnetic MnB particles are dispersed in the alloy during induction remelting the matrix alloy in an argon atmosphere. Surface modification of the MnB particles by mechanical alloying (MA) and suitable control of the addition process cause a homogeneous distribution of MnB particles in the alloy. In the composite containing 2 wt. % MnB particles, temperature dependence of damping capacity is improved, and higher damping capacity is still retained in the temperatures over 60 °C. Meanwhile, the Young's modulus and tensile strength were also increased by about 20%. The roles of the MnB particles in improving both damping behavior and mechanical properties were also discussed.IntroductionMany viscoelastic materials, such as rubbers, polymers and plastics, have the superior ability to damp vibration and noise. However, in the applications as structural materials the high damping capacities of materials are pursued upon the satisfactory mechanical properties, especially those at elevated temperatures. Damping alloys are finding more and more applications in structures where noise and vibration ·should be ·eliminated. Specific damping capacity (SDC), defined as the ratio of the energy dissipated to the maximum vibration energy stored per cycle, is usually used to evaluate the damping capacity of alloys. INCRAMUTE damping alloy, developed by the International Copper Research Association, Inc., has a nominal composition of 45Mn-53Cu-2Al in weight percent. The high damping· microstructure of this alloy is obtained through the solution treatment at 820 °C followed by a water quench and aging at 400°C for 10 hours followed by cooling to room temperature [1]. With the heat treatment, a SDC peak ·vs. temperature of as high as 0.4 was observed in the alloy at the strain amplitude of about 10-3 while a tensile strength of about 500MPa was sustained."

The concentrated coal-water slurry has been receiving considerable attention recently due its ability to replace fossil fuels. Attainment of stable and concentrated slurry has been succeeded so far through several physical and chemical techniques. The present article reports the formulation and stabilization of a highly concentrated coal-water slurry formed from five varieties of non-coking coals with variable ash contents obtained from Eastern part of India, employing three varieties of starch esters, such as starch benzoate, starch formate, and starch carbamate as dispersant. The apparent viscosity of the modified coal-water slurry has been measured by varying coal loading, dispersant percentage, pH, temperature, etc. The apparent viscosity of the slurry has been found to be decreased substantially on addition of 0.8% of adsorbate in the slurry. The particle-particle interaction has been considerably decreased and stable concentrated coal-water slurry containing high weight fraction of coal (61.5-63.5%) has been achieved in each case. The slurries stay in a non-settling form for about a month with viscosity in a permissible low range. The coal-water slurry has been found to behave as a non-Newtonian liquid. Comparison of the zeta potentials of the naked and modified coals evidences that adsorption of the dispersants at coal-water interface results in inhibition of the agglomeration of coal particles through mostly steric repulsions.

Knowledge of the types of naturally occurring sulfur compounds in petroleum is of both theoretical and practical interest to petroleum chemists and geologists. This knowledge has been extended by the identification of 77 sulfur compounds, including 36 thiols, 23 chain sulfides, and 18 cyclic sulfides in a 111° to 150° C boiling range distillate of Wasson, Texas, crude oil. The characterization procedure used in separating and identifying these compounds included isothermal distillation, vacuum fractionation, liquid-solid chromatography (alumina adsorption), chemical treatment, gas-liquid chromatography, microdesulfurization, and infrared analysis. The procedural steps described represent a systematic method of sulfur compound analysis considered applicable for determining the nature and concentration of the sulfur constituents present in any straight-run petroleum distillate of the above-boiling range.

In 2003, a high-temperature pressure leaching circuit to treat copper sulfide concentrates was commissioned at the copper/molybdenum operation at Bagdad, AZ. In late 2007, a medium-temperature pressure leaching circuit was commissioned at the Morenci mine in Arizona. The Morenci circuit was shut down in mid-2008, following a fire in the autoclave circuit. The onset of the global financial crisis in late 2008 resulted in significant changes to the operating profile in the Southwestern United States with respect to concentrates production, concentrates treatment, acid production and acid consumption. As a result of these changes, the Morenci concentrator was shut down, and the pressure leaching circuit remained offline. In late 2014, the increasing acid requirements in the Southwestern United States prompted a reevaluation of the Morenci concentrate leaching facilities. As a result, the pressure leaching circuit was restarted in high-temperature (200 °C) mode in May 2015 and has operated successfully for three years since recommissioning. This paper describes the current pressure leaching circuit configuration and the factors leading to the successful application of copper sulfide concentrate leaching at this location.

Presence of the ground water, especially flowing water, causes limitations in the type of the explosives, which can be used for the blasting development in the open cats and quarries. This presents really big problem in Russia, because more than 70% of the blasting holes are wet and filled by flowing water. The waterproof explosives need to be used in these conditions, which increases the cost of the blasting development. So the search of the methods to remove the water from the blasting hole and to prevent direct contact of the explosive material with the water is important. It will give possibility to use nonwaterproof explosives (such as ANFO) and decrease the cost of the blasting development.

In many papers concerned with fundamentals of the froth flotation process, authors have considered the contents of a flotation cell to be comprised of two immiscible phases, the froth and the pulp. I (Of course, each of these phases is in turn made up of several solid phases plus air and water.) This generalized concept of the flotation system can be extended by considering the cell contents to include two phases: an extracting phase, the air bubbles plus the collector, which removes a selected mineral component from the second phase, the ore pulp. Thus, there is an analogy between a flotation system on the one hand, and chemical extracting systems, such a solvent extraction system or a leaching system, on the other hand. Such extracting systems may be operated in cocurrent or countercurrent fashion. This paper includes first a brief discussion on the general nature of cocurrent and countercurrent operation as applied to froth flotation, and then presents the experimental results of flotation of a specular hematite ore by each method, using a tall oil fatty acid as collector. Cocurrent Flotation A conventional flotation circuit involving roughing, scavenging, and cleaning flotation is illustrated schematically in Figure 1. In such a circuit the col¬lector, or extractant, and new feed ore enter together at the head of the rougher circuit, and flow cocurrently to the scavenger circuit where more collector is added. According to this practice, sufficient collector is added to the head of the rougher (and scavenger) so that the final tailings are of low enough grade to be discarded. Since the flow of collector and ore is cocurrent, the process consists of single stage contact between the extracting phase and the ore pulp. If the scavenger concentrate is recycled to the head of rougher, the overall circuit has some of the characteristics of countercurrent flow. A significant emerging recycling, waste minimization problem stems from legacy waste from the nuclear weapons program and from production of power using nuclear fuel. Premium quality metals used in nuclear plants become contaminated, making them unsuitable for reuse. Consequently, decontamination studies were conducted to evaluate the decontamination capacity and partitioning effeetiveness of Electroslag Remelting (ESR). Eight laboratory melts were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of using ESR to transport radionuclides from the liquid metal phase to the liquid flux or slag phase. To determine the decontamination effectiveness, several surrogate compounds for uranium, plutonium and other fission products were added to the melts. During the melts, the melting rate was varied, typical slag additives were used, and two different slag compositions were evaluated. The resultant post-test ingots and slag were then analyzed to determine the partitioning of the surrogates. ESR generally proved very effective in removing contaminates from the metal with a few noted exceptions. -

"This study was undertaken to provide a more adequate knowledge of the chemistry of the sulfide volatilization process for recovery of tin from low-grade Bolivian ores. The investigation was partly supported by the Department of State under its program for scientific cooperation with South American republics.The results of this investigation demonstrate the conditions under which cassiterite (Sn02) may be converted to stannous sulfide by reaction with pyrite or sulfur vapor. Quantitative data are given on the rate of sulfidization and on the vapor pressure of stannous sulfide.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the United States is the world's largest consumer of tin, virtually no tin ores occur within our national borders. Most of the world's tin supply comes from alluvial deposits in the Far East and in Africa, The major sources of tin ores are Malaya, Indochina, Bolivia, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Thailand, Burma, China, and the United Kingdom. Bolivia is the only important source of tin in the western hemisphere. It was the chief source of tin f or the United States during World War II. The Government-owned tin smelter at Texas City, Tex., was built primarily for smelting Bolivian ores and depends largely on Bolivian ores for its operation. Bolivia is the only major tin-producing country in which the tin ores occur as vein or lode deposits requiring underground mining. Most of the tin from the Far East and Africa is mined by dredges from alluvial or placer depos its. It is recovered as a high-grade concentrate of cassiterite relatively free from impurities. The tin minerals in the lode deposits are more intimately associated with other minerals and more difficult to separate into a clean concentrate. Furthermore, a large part of the tin in the original ore is lost during concentration. The ores as mined contain only a few percent of tin, so they must be milled to separate the gangue minerals and produce a concentrate containing 30 to 40 percent tin before they are shipped to the smelter. The losses of tin that occur during milling vary from 18 to 65 percent. The average recovery of tin from Bolivian ores is probably 50 to 60 percent."

Marshall and Bird have published the results of a cooperative investigation by the Bureau of Mines in which they developed a procedure for measuring the agglutinating value of coal.4 As stated in their paper, the procedure outlined was suggested by the early worn of Richters5 and Campredon,6 whose procedures were hurriedly modified to meet the need of an investigation then in progress. Since the publicatien of that paper, further work has been done in an attempt to show how the variables involved affect the concordance of the results, in order that such results may be obtained in different laboratories. Briefly, Marshall and Bird's method for determining the agglutinating value of coal consists in carbonizing an intimate mixture of 10 parts by weight of sand and 1 part by weight of coal in a porcelain crucible at a uniform temperature of 950° C. in a, vertical, cylindrical, electrically-heated furnace. After carbonization, the resultant buttons are crushed in a testing machine and the breaking strengths recorded in grams. The agglutinating value reported is the average breaking strength of 10 buttons. The coal for the test is prepared by crushing to pass a 100-mesh screen. The sand used as a diluent is sized between 40 and 50 mesh sieves with openings of 0.381 icon and 0.279 millimeters, respectively.

This Bureau of Mines report presents results from experimental studies on wood crib fires in an intermediate-scale fire tunnel. Gas concentrations, smoke particle characteristics, heat release rates, and ventilation rates were determined. These measurements form a data base for wood, which can be used with previous analyses for coal and future studies of other mine combustibles, to comprehend the potential hazards of these materials in underground mine fires. A knowledge of the combustion products emitted from these materials will benefit fire detection and control. Results show the changes in burning rate and heat release rate produced by different crib configurations and ventilation rates. Also included are the effects that the burning rate has on smoke characteristics and gas production.

St. Joe Minerals Corp., a subsidiary of Fluor Corp., treats high-grade gold, silver, and copper ore at its El Indio plant at an altitude of 4 km in the Chilean Andes. The ore is complex, being a mixture of massive pyrite-enargite and quartz, both containing very fine gold and silver. Treatment produces a copper flotation concentrate containing high levels of gold, silver, and arsenic, and also dore bullion. Part of the flotation concentrate is roasted to remove the arsenic content, and arsenic trioxide is collected as a by-product.

Iron-bearing dusts, containing valuable constituents such as Fe, CaO, MgO, C, etc., are generally utilized as raw material in iron ore sintering. However, the dusts characterized by low granulating and refractory performances always lead to negative effects on sintering indexes. As we know, the innovative process named composite agglomeration process (CAP) has a series of advantages compared to traditional sintering process (TSP). In CAP, part or all of the iron-bearing dusts is made into green pellets with 5-15mm in diameter, while the rest of iron-bearing dusts and all of the other fine ores is granulated after mixing with fuels, fluxes and return fines. Compared with TSP, CAP could increase the ratio of iron-bearing dusts from 5% to over 20%. Meanwhile, the yield, ISO tumbler index and productivity reached 75.82%, 65.13% and 1.531t·m-2·h -1, respectively.

"The piles often are also subjected to lateral (horizontal) forces and moments. In fact, there are some structures where the primary function of piles is to transfer lateral loads to the ground. Proper analysis of laterally loaded piles is very important to the geotechnical and civil engineering profession.In the present investigation an experimental study has been carried out with free head short model cast iron hollow piles of outer diameter of 24 mm and L/d ratios of 8, 10, and 15. The experimental results have been supplemented by numerical techniques using PLAXIS-3D Foundation version 2.1 software. The results have been found to agree reasonably well with the experimental results. Further finite difference approach has been adoptedto reduce the computational time and to calculate the coefficient of modulus of subgrade reaction (?h) from the load- deflection data obtained from PLAXIS output at different pile depths. The parametric study has been extended for the non-dimensional form defined as flexibility ratio (F.R.),where ?h, L, Ep and Ip are the coefficient of modulus of sub-grade reaction, the embeddedlength of model pile, elastic modulus of pile material and the moment of inertia of model pile about the central axis respectively).The variation of coefficient of horizontal modulus of sub-grade reaction (?h) has been studied with respect to the following parameters for homogeneous soil system: relative density andL/d ratio. It has been found that the logarithm of flexibility ratio increases with increase inrelative density and increase inL/d Ratio. The values of ?h obtained by the proposed method have been, found to be close to the numerical results.As output of this research, graphs have been generated in respect of different parametric variations to gain an insight into behavior of piles under lateral load for short piles."

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) State Route (SR) 167/70th Avenue East Vicinity Bridge Replacement Design-Build project is located in Fife, Washington. This $40 million project consists of replacing the existing 70th Avenue Bridge over Interstate 5 (I-5) with a single-span bridge of about 220 feet long with approach embankments. The subsurface conditions along the new bridge alignment generally consists of alluvial deposits with high potential of liquefaction overlying glacially overridden deposits. In the early stages of the project, drilled shafts were considered as the deep foundation system; however, after an additional subsurface investigation is completed at the site, driven pipe piles were selected as the deep foundation system. Bridge abutments are supported by 24-inch diameter, 80-foot-long open-end driven steel pipe piles. The pile length was determined to bypass a relatively thick liquefiable zone and to tip the piles above what could be compressible soils. The use of advanced seismic analysis was instrumental in optimizing the pile length. The dynamic testing performed on numerous piles indicated what could be unique soil setup factors compared to those measured in local projects as well as those reported in national design manuals. Detailed discussions of the pile foundations design and construction is presented in this paper.

"In this paper, experiences from Polish non-ferrous metals ores enrichment plants in the copper and blende concentrates quality improvement are discussed. The blende concentrate being produced in ZGH Boleslaw S.A., with Zn content of about 54,5% is characterized by the relatively high magnesium content reaching a level of 1% resulting from the dolomite presence, while for the zinc production by electrowinning a concentrate in which magnesium content should not exceed 0,3% is required. The implemented new technology for the quality improvement of blende concentrate is based on the leaching of zinc concentrate with sulfuric acid aimed at dissolving of the contained dolomite, and then flotation of the leached concentrate. It allows to obtain a concentrate with magnesium content below 0,1% at the simultaneously increased zinc content to about 57,5%. In the paper, laboratory tests results on the development of optimal flotation flowsheet for the gypsum removal and the industrial tests results concerning the process optimization of this flotation are discussed. In turn, the copper concentrate being produced in Polish copper ore enrichment plants KGHM PM S.A., is characterized by the increased organic carbon content - above 8%. It creates problems with the smelting of this concentrate because of difficulties with the heat removal derived from the combustion of organic carbon in the flash smelting process. The implementation of segregating flotation to the industrial practice allows the effective production of two concentrates with the differentiated chemical compositions - a concentrate with increased copper content and reduced organic carbon content for the flash smelting process, and a concentrate with lower copper content and increased organic carbon content for the shaft smelting process. In the paper, conditions of the segregating flotation and the achieved results are described."

Although the number of operating longwall mining systems has remained relatively consistent over the past five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. Longwall production currently accounts for approximately 50% of U.S. underground coal production. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems. This increased longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced. An improved understanding of the longwall face ventilation system and advancement of face ventilation technologies are necessary to ensure all face personnel are allowed to work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of airborne respirable coal mine dust. The Dust and Toxic Substances Control Branch of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory has examined several basic principles of the longwall face ventilation system, and has evaluated the effectiveness of numerous improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall mining sections and investigating the fundamental relationship between face air flow and the entrainment and dilution of respirable coal mine dust. Studies have been completed to determine the impact on face dust levels from using belt entry air to ventilate the longwall. Novel methods have been identified to increase the amount of face air flow and to manage face air flow to most effectively minimize face workers' dust exposure. Unique systems of auxiliary face ventilation have been developed and evaluated at full-scale, simulated longwall test facilities. The theoretical and applied aspects of each of these principles and technologies are discussed. Application of these results, throughout the longwall mining industry, as documented from surveys conducted in the early 1980's and 1990's, have reduced the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust.
