Statistical metallurgical plant trials are becoming more widespread, as a valuable tool for increasing plant profitability. Generally, a single parameter like metal recovery varies under the trial condition while all other variables such as average metal feed grade or average metal concentrate grade are equal for the two test conditions during the period of the test. Metal recovery is usually the measured variable because concentrate grade is fixed by smelter terms, and plants operate to maximise recovery at the required concentrate grade. However, in all flotation plants there is a relationship between concentrate grade and metal recovery, and under the same conditions increasing one results in a decrease in the other. At MMGÆs Rosebery Mine the zinc concentrate produced is generally above smelter specifications, so zinc concentrate grade can vary during a test. During trialling of magnetic conditioning in the Rosebery zinc circuit, the difference in both zinc recovery and zinc concentrate grade were analysed. The analysis of changes in zinc grade and recovery during the trial raised some interesting questions about the relationship between concentrate grade and recovery. A paired statistical method was developed and tested to combine in each pair the change in concentrate grade and recovery in a single result that could be analysed by a paired t test. This method was found to be very sensitive to combined, varying changes in concentrate grade and/or metal recovery. Most tailings storage facility (TSF) failures occur in active, upstream-type TSFs, often due to extreme and unexpected weather conditions—specifically, heavy rainfall and strong winds. This case study of a TSF in southern Arizona examines the use of the optimum safe beach distance (Doptimal, the optimum distance between the crest and decant pond) as a tool for monitoring geotechnical stability and reducing catastrophic failures. A digital model of the TSF was used to determine the critical beach distance (Dcritical) under normal weather conditions, and Doptimal was then determined by adding incremental distances to account for the effects of heavy rainfall (Drainfall) and strong winds (Dwind). To overcome accessibility issues, a drone was used to map the TSF geometry and create a digital model. This model served as the basis for conducting a coupled stress-seepage, finite-element (FEM) analysis with a safety factor of 2.0 to assess geotechnical stability (Dcritical). The safe beach distance increments were determined using the PMP (probable maximum precipitation) and possible maximum wind speed. Based on this analysis, the optimal safe beach distance at the study site was identified as 202.2 m. Since the current beach distance (371 m) exceeds this value, the TSF was considered to be stable and satisfied the design safety factor of 2.0. However, this distance should be reassessed periodically to account for changes in the TSF geometry and other conditions. Furthermore, it applies only TSFs that are well-managed and feature a smooth, non-undulating beach surface with a consistent slope.

THE White Knob copper-deposits are situated about three miles south of Mackay, on the Salmon River .branch of the Oregon Short Line Railroad, in Custer county, Idaho. An outline-map of this district is given in Fig. 1. The deposits have been known and spasmodically worked for many years, and a total of over 3.5 miles of tunnels, shafts and other workings has been driven with a view to their development. These extensive excavations have exposed the deposits sufficiently to permit a careful geological examination. The peculiar features which give special interest to this paper are the branching, free-like form of the ore-bodies; the absence of zones of secondary enrichment in the partly oxidized pyritic deposits, and the fact that while the deposits are associated in a general way with the contact of an eruptive rock with limestone, which it penetrates, the garnetization has taken place not in the limestone, as is the usual case, but in the igneous

The Glacier View RARE Ii further planning area contains no identified mineral deposits, other than stone, which cannot compete favorably with similar deposits closer to major markets. Pierce County mining claim records show six coal claims were located in the study area between 190b and 1907; however, no coal was found at the described locations. Two coal prospects, the H.O. Lamming and Floyd Rice, are within 0.5 mi (0.8 km) of the area's west boundary (fig. 1). At these prospects, impure bituminous coal beds strike approximately north and dip east toward the study area. Analyses of samples 1/ indicated an average heating value of 2,767 BTU 2/ per pound (6,436 joules per kg). Because of the low heat value, this coal is subeconomic. Intense folding and faulting which disrupted the beds would limit the use of conventional coal mining equipment, making future economic development even less likely. Trinity Resources of Houston, Texas has leased approximately 1,404 acres (568 ha) inside the study area and an additional 1,020 acres (413 ha) adjacent to the study area for oil and gas exploration. However, no oil or gas wells are known to have been drilled in or around the study area.

"A fixed grid numerical model for phase change problems is proposed. The model solves for heat transfer and fluid flow, via the coupled solution of the energy, continuity and momentum equations. In addition, the numerical scheme accounts for temperature varying thermophysical properties and determines the shrinkage profile resulting from phase and density change. Simulations are run to determine the effect of varying model parameters and wall cooling rates on the location and shape of the shrinkage void formation in cylindrical casts. Results are shown for both aluminum and magnesium.IntroductionThe mathematical modeling of phase change processes (be they solidification or melting problems) entails solving for many interrelated phenomena. A comprehensive numerical simulation of the casting of a metal, for example, would have to account for: (a) heat transfer in both the solid and liquid portions of the metal and in the mold, (b) the release of latent heat during phase change, (c) fluid flow behavior in the liquid portion of the metal, (d) temperature induced shrinkage caused by liquid contraction and solidification contraction, and (e) the development of thermal stresses with accompanying shrinkage in the solid portion of the cast and mold. The smelting processes discussed; include updraught sintering, blast furnace and reverberatory smelting, and converting. Selected examples are given of methods implemented, and options available, to improve the productivity and efficiency of conventional smelting processes.

The eutectic morphology is influenced by the presence of lhree-nned dendrites 0-f MgzZn11 which may conlrol /he rricroslrccture by acting as nuclealion sites. In recent years there has been much interest in eutectic solidification and several theories have been proposed. One of the confusing factors is the existence of various morphologies in which the solidified phases may form. The lamellar microstructure seems to be most common in metal eutectics, and it has been claimed' that all regular eutectics should be lamellar if sufficiently pure. However, there still remain eutectic alloys which are not lamellar or which change their morphology as a function of growth conditions. The eutectic between zinc and the intermetallic phase Mg2Znll was chosen for this investigation because it has been found to solidify in more than one morphology. The diagram in anssen' locates the eutectic point at 3.0 wt pct Mg and 367°C. lliott gives 364°C as the eutectic temperature, leaving the phase compositions unaltered. Since the growth conditions determine the micro-structure of the solidified alloy, the factors controlling the transition from one morphology to another could be studied. The lamellae to rods transition is of particular interest. PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared from carefully weighed portions of 99.999 pct Zn and 99.97 pct Mg by melting in Pyrex containers under argon and casting into graphite boats. The resulting ingots were remelted under argon and solidified unidirectionally in a horizontal tube furnace at growth rates ranging from 2.0 to more than 50 cm per hr under a temperature gradient, measured over a 5-cm length, of 9" to 14°C per cm. The solid-liquid interface appeared to be planar at all growth rates although no attempt was made to confirm this by decantation or quenching. A few ingots were allowed to freeze uncontrolled. Most alloys were of the nominal eutectic composition, 3.0 wt pct Mg according to Hansen2 and lliott, but some contained as much as 3.35 wt pct Mg. Chemical analyses were not run since metallographic examination confirmed that the desired composition was achieved. Specimens were cut from the middle portion of the ingot normal to the growth axis, polished mechanically, and etched with 2 pct Nital. Suitable areas were selected for the determination of crystallographic orientation relationships by a tiontechniqueof described previously by one of the authors.4 The (2310) planes of zinc and the (8701, {944}? (1032) planes of Mg2Znll were found suitable for orientation determination; experimental error was on the order of 2 or 3 deg. RESULTS Three different morphologies were found in the unidirectionally solidified alloys: lamellar eutectic, rod-like eutectic, and a structure whose most predominant characteristic was the presence of three-vaned (cellular) dendrites of Mg2Znll. These dendrites were only found in alloys with more than the eutectic amount of magnesium. In some ingots fine hexagonal needles of Mg2Znll surrounding a core of MgZn2 were observed. They were probably due to incomplete alloying and seemed to have no effect on the eutectic morphology. In addition hexagonal spirals like those discussed by Fullman and wood5 and Hunt and acksonh ere observed in some ingots frozen without directional control. Both MgZZn,, and MgZnz were detected by X-ray diffraction in these alloys. Since the morphology could not be grown unidirectionally and no characteristic orientation relationship between the phases was found, further study was limited to the lamellar: rodlike, and three-vaned dendrite morphologies. Alloys of Eutectic Composition, No Dendrites. The mcrostructures of allovs with no three-vaned dendrites were either lamellar or rodlike depending on the growth rate. At rates below 10 cm per hr the morphology was lamellar, consisting of two sets of parallel plates intersecting at about 54 deg like the Mg-MgzSn eutectic described by raft.7 At growth rates faster than 14 cm per hr the microstructure showed rods of zinc in a matrix of MgnZnll, while intermediate rates yielded mixtures of rods and lamellae in small groups. The lamellar "grains" were often several millimeters in cross section, but contained small irregular areas which divided each grain into perfect islands 100 or 200 p in diam. Lamellae were parallel to each other throughout the grain in spite of these defects in the structure, Fig. 1. Rods, on the other hand, could only be produced in small groups arranged like fish scales and separated by irregular areas of appreciable thickness, Fig. 2. Alloys Not of Eutectic Composition, With Dendrites. In alloys with 3.1 to 3.35 wt pct ME,-. three-vaned dendrites bf MgzZnll were usually found surrounded by eutectic. At growth rates slower than about 10 cm per hr the dendrites were separated from each other by small areas of both lamellar and rod eutectic, Fig. 3.

The authors are to be congratulated for presenting a simple and practical tool for quick estimates of ground water flow rates. At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. Reaction kinetics of metallurgical physical chemistry which was successfully applied in metallurgy (as ferrous metallurgy, non-ferrous metallurgy) became an important theoretical foundation for subject system of traditional metallurgy. Not only the research methods were very perfect, but also the independent structures and systems of it had been formed. One of the important tasks of metallurgical reaction engineering was the simulation of metallurgical process. And then, the mechanism of reaction process and the conversion time points of different control links should be obtained accurately. Therefore, the research methods and results of reaction kinetics in metallurgical physical chemistry were not very suitable for metallurgical reaction engineering. In order to provide the definite conditions of transmission, reaction kinetics parameters and the conversion time points of different control links for solving the transmission and reaction equations in metallurgical reaction engineering, a new method for researching kinetics mechanisms in metallurgical reaction engineering was proposed ,which was named stepwise attempt method. Then the comparison of results between the two methods and the further development of stepwise attempt method were discussed in this paper. As a new research method for reaction kinetics in metallurgical reaction engineering, stepwise attempt method could not only satisfy the development of metallurgical reaction engineering, but also provide necessary guarantees for establishing its independent subject system.

The demand for high-grade iron ore has increased the importance of beneficiation of low-grade iron ores. The captive mines of Tata Steel Limited, India has reserves of Banded Haematite Jasper (BHJ) ore assayed 40% Fe, 40% SiO2 and <1% Al2O3. QEMSCAN study has revealed haematite and quartz as a major iron bearing and gangue mineral phases respectively. Liberation characteristics have showed 80% liberation can be obtained at particle size below 10µm. In the present study, reverse cationic froth flotation of BHJ using ether diamines is explored in Denver-D12 flotation cell. Polynomial response surface regression equation coupled with six-factor Box-Behnken design of experiments is used to generate the correlation between process separation efficiency and flotation parameters. Flotation studies of BHJ indicated that concentrate of 62% Fe can be achieved with 62% Fe recovery from Jig concentrate at optimum conditions. Ultrafine copper, gold and silver minerals flotation has become increasingly important because of the rising demand for processing finely disseminated ores. This paper investigates the improved flotation of ultrafine ores from a Troilus Gold project. Troilus is primarily an Au-Cu deposit but contains minor amounts of Ag, Zn and Pb, as well as traces of Bi, Te, and Mo. As a result of ultrafine Cu-Au-Ag dissemination and associated grinding requirements, Eriez’ column/StackCell and Denver benchtop cells were utilized to optimize their respective flotation responses. Enhanced flotation results were achieved using column and StackCell technologies. KAX 51 and SPRI 206 collectors, Na2SO3, and ZnSO4 depressants were the primary reagents employed. In column/StackCell flotation of three main mineral deposit ore composites, the rougher-scavenger-cleaner circuit Cu, Au and Ag flotation recoveries were 90.4~95.8% at a copper grade of 13.6-17.4%, 87.5-95.1% at a gold grade of 101-145.9 g/t, and 88.6-91.8% at a silver grade of 62.6-251.4 g/t, respectively. The benefits of Eriez Column/StackCell flotation technologies include high flotation selectivity and increased recovery due to unique hydrodynamic designs. Specifically, the StackCell design facilitates high turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates to improve fine particle recovery and incorporates countercurrent wash water to significantly reduce hydraulic entrainment of the finest size gangue minerals to the froth product.

The purpose of this investigation was twofold: (1) To devise a rapid method for determining quantitatively the porphyrin-carboxylic acid content of a particular crude-oil porphyrin aggregate, and (2) to isolate porphyrins in the crystalline state from crude-oil porphyrin aggregates. The first purpose was accomplished by applying adsorption chromatography. In fulfillment of the second aim three different crystalline porphyries were isolated by methods which involved both adsorption chromatography and fractionation of benzene solutions with hydrochloric acid of varying strength. The three porphyrins had etio, rhodo-, and phyllo-type absorption spectra, respectively. INTRODUCTION Many samples of petroleum have, as interesting minor constituents, chemical compounds known as metalloporphyrins. Their presence in crude oil and other bituminous materials was first discovered by Treibs a quarter century ago. Much experimental work has been done on metalloporphyrins because of their importance to the petroleum industry. They have a deleterious effect on refining catalysts. The ash resulting from the burning of heavy fuel oil is very reactive, We to the presence of metallic constituents, particularly vanadium. In oil-fired gas turbines, the ash may build up on the blades, causing imbalance of the rotors and, in addition, severe corrosion. In industrial boilers, the ash residue is responsible for severe damage to boiler tubes and to the refractory brickwork (15).4 Through study of the chemical constitution of the various metalloporphyrins found in petroleum, much can be learned concerning the origin, migration, and history of crude oils.

Therefore, the possibility of a mine fife occurring is of particular concern.The first objective is to prevent a fife.The second objective is to design the ventilation system so that a positive fresh air supply can be ensured on each main level regardless of the location of the fife.The third objective is to be able to detect the fife at an early stage and to extinguish it before it can develop into a major fife. Best practice for the submission of samples to an internal or commercial laboratory requires quality control materials to be included for the purpose of independently and comprehensively assessing laboratory performance. These quality controls include the use of certified reference materials (CRMs) and may be blind to the laboratory. Iron ore companies purchase these materials from reputable manufacturers from stock of run-of-mine materials at the appropriate grades. The international standard, ISO 17034 (ISO, 2016), specifies the competency requirements for organisations manufacturing reference materials, and includes rigorous requirements for the assessment of homogeneity, stability and establishment of property values and their uncertainties. Homogeneity is one of the most important measures of suitability for all certified reference materials and refers to the degree to which the composition and properties of a sample are uniform throughout the batch, relative to the analytical precision of the method. More specifically, homogeneity studies of candidate reference materials should be assessed for both within sample variance and between sample variance with appropriate statistical controls. The design and application of homogeneity studies are discussed as they apply to both crushed and pulverised reference materials. Crushed certified reference materials have been utilised by the iron ore industry for a number of years and provide the user with a critical assessment of variances in sample preparation in addition to analysis. Crushed reference materials are similar in presentation to an RC sample and are generally used as discrete parcels of material submitted to the laboratory from the field. Pulverise certified reference materials miss the sample preparation step and are subsampled from th delivered sachet at the point of analysis. This paper compares the relative homogeneity performance of crushed and pulverised certified reference materials by grade across key iron ore chemical constituents. Outcomes are benchmarked to the international standard ISO 9516 (ISO, 2003) for the determination of various elements in iron ores by lithium borate fusion and X-ray fluorescence. Practical implications are discussed with reference to a case study from an iron ore laboratory in the Pilbara.

Ageing tests on a crushed Cu-porphyry ore were conducted to assess the impact of sample oxidation on flotation performance. The objective of the testwork was to simulate ageing of ore that would be blasted through block caving but not milled for possibly several months. Ageing was performed in specially designed columns, using site and deionised water to keep the samples moist over the entire ageing period. Samples from each ageing interval (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 months) were examined for physical and metallurgical changes resulting from the ageing process through chemical analyses, size analyses, and batch flotation tests.

This report presents observations made by Bureau engineers regarding hydraulic-powered roof supports that are currently being used or have been used on nearly all operating longwalls in the United States, A comparative summary of specifications for various types of powered supports with a brief description of the mine conditions has been compiled to enable mining engineers and mine operators to readily evaluate the differences in design data. Some of the support data furnished in the field may vary from those listed in manufacturers&apos; brochures because of the trend to customize various support components to meet specific mine conditions. A method of estimating support requirements for different assumed operating conditions is presented. Similar computations for specific mine conditions may be used to make preliminary estimates of support requirements.

The South African mining industry continues to be a major source of employment at a time when at least 25 per cent of the working age population is unemployed. At the same time the industry faces a skills shortage in many of the disciplines necessary for its future health. The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa have historically produced mining graduates for the South African industry, with any shortfall being met by the recruitment of overseas graduates. More recently the global shortage of engineers and other mining industry professionals has seen a reversal of this trend and a very significant emigration of well-educated and highly skilled personnel. The traditional career path for mining graduates is in production and mine management. However, there is the parallel and possibly more pressing need for specialized skills in such fields as ventilation, rock engineering, mine planning, mineral resource evaluation, and mineral asset valuation. It is in these essential areas that chronic shortages continue to hamper the development of the industry and may well frustrate its ambitions to be safe, healthy, and profitable into the future. The permeability of skills across sectorial boundaries within the mining industry requires that skills shortages in the platinum sector are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of the entire industry. This paper reviews the efforts being made by the universities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels to meet the needs of the South African mining industry, in terms of the required numbers and the range of specialized skills.

In this paper, an evaluation about the process mineralogy of the rich iron mine in Mongolia with comprehensive methods is given; this provides foundation of the comprehensive recovery of iron and cobalt in the ore. The research shows that the iron?s grade is 61.23%, Co?s grade is 0.02%, the ore is rich iron ore and its Co content also reaches border mining grade. For the ore, if want get high grade iron concentrate powder, must identify the mineral composition and the occurrence of iron and take into ac-count the recovery of Co content as associated resources. Chemical phase analysis results show that 86.35% of iron exists in magnetite, which means that the theoretical recovery ratio of iron is close to 86%. Minerals spectrum analysis confirmed that the magnetite containing a small amount of Mg, Al, and other impurities, the actual iron minerals to 70.28%, which means that theoretically iron grade iron concentrate only close to 70.28%. Based on the result of iron chemical phase analysis, by investigating the liberation of sulfide minerals and gangue, the recovery index of iron can be forecasted, when grinding fineness is 35%, 45%, 55% and 65% bellow 0.074mm,theoretical content of Fe in iron concentrate separately is 67.71%,67.88%,68.78%,and 69.43%,accordingly the theoretical recovery of Fe is 87.38%,87.05%,86.92% and 86.63%. From the perspective of process mineralogy, the forecast mineral beneficiation indicators show that the ore is easy sorting ore, iron processing operations have higher recovery rate, but wants sorting of high-grade iron ore concentrate still need appropriate grinding fineness. Furthermore, associated element Co, existing mostly in pyrite and pyrrhotite, is valuable in the ore. Pyrite and pyrrhotite have ideal liberation under grinding, so cobalt can be easily enriched in sulfide concentrate.

There is general agreement among scientists that global surface temperatures have been increasing during the past decades. The increase in temperature is postulated to be the result of either an increase in greenhouse gases emission or climate variability (i.e., due to variations in sun or volcanic activity or El Nino and La Nina events) during past decades and may continue to increase. The effects of a predicted rise in the Earth?s surface temperature include an increase in average global evaporation and increase or decrease in precipitation (Bloomfield, 1992; Mann et al., 1991; Vinnikov et al., 1990; Gan 1995; Zhang et al., 2000a). The general circulation models (GCMs) project a global warming due to greenhouse effects of 1.5-4.5°C by the mid 2050s, with the most pronounced changes taking place in northern latitudes (Nicholls et al., 1996). However, similar predictions at a watershed scale or even a regional scale using GCMs are mot possible yet (Arnell et. al., 1996; Georgievskii et. al., 1996; Zhang et al., 2000a). Detection of historic trends, changes and variability in climatic variables is another indirect means of understanding potential future changes or variability at regional and local scales. The main objective of this paper is to review studies related to climatic change or variability and associated hydrologic changes at a regional scale and local scale, particularly those studies applicable to the Oil Sands Region (OSR) of Alberta. This paper identifies gaps in our current understanding of the hydrologic processes that may be affected by climate change; it discusses potential implications to developments in the OSR; and it explores mitigation opportunities including several that have already been implemented.
