A Method to Calculate Hydrodynamic Loads on Underground Bulkheads Bulkheads are structures built in openings in underground mines to impound water, preventing the water from entering the active mine workings. These structures not only have to be designed to withstand the static, hydraulic pressure, but also the dynamic or seismic pressure, which would be generated by an earthquake. Bulkheads can be considered underground dams. Unlike dams on the surface, bulkheads are often subjected to hydraulic heads that exceed the heights of the bulkheads. Theodor von Karman in 1933, and Westergaard earlier, developed the equation by which the hydrodynamic pressures on surface dams could be calculated. Civil engineering handbooks of today contain this equation. In this paper, using the methodology developed by von Karman and Westergaard, the authors have developed an equation by which the hydrodynamic forces on bulkheads could be calculated when the hydraulic head exceeds the height of the bulkhead.

In early 1970, General Mills Chemicals, Inc. announced the availability of en improved liquid ion exchange reagent, LIX® 64N, for the recovery of copper from various solutions, such as dump leach liquors. LIX 64N has been shown to be a considerable advance over LIX 64, and is presently in use in three commercial plants. Results have been very gratifying. For example, one of the plants was designed for operational production of 40,000 pounds copper per day, and in fact reached this output within the third week following startup of the plant. In addition to the operating plants, another is scheduled to come on stream this month with L D( 64N being used to extract and recover both copper and nickel. The chemical properties and operating characteristics of this reagent have been fully described in a previous paper. 1 LIX 64N is quite an effective and selective extractint for copper, even with copper contents as high as 15 g/l, but the reagent is somewhat limited in pH range, and loses some of its extraction efficiency as the pH drops below 0.8. Liquors derived from vat leaching, electrolytic tankhouae bleed streams, or some of the new leach schemes derived to solubilize copper from sulfide concentrates are examples of the liquors that present major problems when treated via liquid ion exchange. LIX 64N could extract some of the copper from such streams, but recovery was limited to about 75 percent. Also, in some parts of the world there are streams which are relatively low in copper (-5 g/l) but which are very high in acid (25-50 g/1 H2SO4). Again, LIX 64N can attain only about 75 percent recovery from such streams. Electrowinning consumes a substantial amount of electrical energy, and owing to the ever-increasing unit cost of electrical power there is a need to improve current efficiency in the process. This research was carried out to design a continuous quality improvement framework for improving electrowinning current efficiency by applying statistical process control (SPC) on an online industrial copper electrowinning operation. A sequential mixed research methodology was applied and a statistical software package utilized for analysing data. It was concluded that metallurgical short-circuits (hotspots) had the most significant effect on current efficiency. Bringing hotspots under statistical control resulted in a 5.40% improvement in current efficiency, which is equivalent to approximately 74 t of 99.999% pure grade A copper cathode production over a period of 1.5 months.

The purpose of this paper was to compare the covariance and multiquadric functions in same mining and geological applications. The basic principals of the two techniques are covered briefly. Similarities and dissimilarities of the covariance and multiquadric functions are discussed geometrically, mathematically and practically. A 14 by 16 kilometer square area in Baharia Oasis, Western Desert of Egypt, was selected for a detailed comparative test. The gravity anomalies of forty-eight test stations were computed by using the data of sixty-three control stations. The results indicated that the covariance function is quite better than the multiquadric one. On the other hand, the multiquadric function more simple in computation than the other one, which needs to precalculations such as semivariogram and covariogram. Moreover, multiquadric equations are based on geometrical and physical considerations rather than covariance functions.

The suitability of fluid petroleum coke as a blending agent for producing metallurgical coke has been investigated using the Tuscaloosa and sole-heated experimental ovens. From the results of tests with three representative blends, it has been fond that additions of fluid petroleum coke effect the following changes: (1) Increase in size, resistance to shatter, and apparent specific gravity of cokes produced; (2) little or no change in coke hardness and stability or in the amount of breeze formed; (3) increased charge density; (4) modification of expansion characteristics of blends charged; and (5) decreased ash and increased sulfur contents of blends charged and cokes produced. Substitution of a calcined sample of fluid coke of greatly reduced sulfur content resulted in a coke of inferior physical properties. This effect indicates that additions of the calcined product should probably be limited and that other methods for producing a low sulfur fluid coke should be considered.

"Electron spin resonance measurements provide evidence for the formation of long-lived Cr(V) intermediates in the reduction of Cr(Vl) by glutathione redtuctase in the presence of NADPH and for the hydroxyl radical formation during the glutathione reductase catalyzed reduction of Cr(Vl). Hydrogen peroxide suppresses Cr(V) and enhances the formation of hydroxyl radicals. Thus Cr(V) intermediates catalyze generation of hydroxyl radicals from hydrogen peroxide through a Fenton-like reaction. Thus the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity might involve the interaction between macromolecules and the hydroxyl radicals.C(Vl) compounds have been found to exert serious toxic and carcinogenic effects on humans and animals (1-3). In contrast, most Cr(III) compounds are relatively nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, and nonmutagenic (1,4). Cr(VI) and Cr(III) oxidation states are different in their metabolic pathways: Cr(VI) , ions are rapidly transported across cellular membrane (1,4,5), while Cr[III) moieties do not easily penetrate cells and are not oxidized by cellular constituents (!). Since it is known that the reduction of Cr(VI) ion is required for its reaction with DNA (1), the molecular mechanisms for the intracellular Cr(Vl) reduction has been the focus of current studies but the details are still not understood.Earlier studies on the mechanism of Cr(Vl) reduction include those on the reduction of Cr(VIJ by glutathione (GSH) .0,6-8), ascorbic acid (9), glucose (10), lactose (IO), galacturonic acid (11), microsome (12), and mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes (13). These studies have shown that the Cr(VI) reduction involves the formation of Cr(V)-containing species which are often considered to be the toxic form of chromium. Thus far, however, no information is· available on the subsequent fate of those biologically formed Cr(V) species, in particular employing well defined biochemical systems. In this context, we report here our investigations of the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione reductase (GSSG-R). This enzyme was selected because it is ubiquitously present in cellular systems and it has been postulated to be involved in the Cr(VI) reduction (14-17) but the underlying mechanism has not been clarified. We find that the reduction proces·s involves not only Cr(V) but also ·OH radicals. We further investigate the reactivity of Cr(V) and find that it catalyzes generation of OH radical from H2O 2 through a Fenton-like reaction. The role of ·OH in Cr(VI) carcinogenicity is suggested from this study."

The Cu-Au flotation cleaning circuit at Freeport Indonesia consists of three stages: two flotation column stages, in series, followed by one stage of mechanical cells. Concentrate from both column stages is combined as final concentrate. The mechanical cell stage has two parallel rows of seven Wemco 500's. The Wemco concentrate is recycled to feed of the second column stage and Wemco tails report to final tailings. This paper examines cleaner circuit performance, focusing on size-by-size performance of the individual stages and the individual mineral groups -copper sulfides, gold and in sol minerals. The recovery mechanisms of insol minerals are examined.

An accelerated and coordinated program of coal research is believed by many to be a necessary step in assuring coal's proper position in the expanding energy market. The President's Advisory Committee on Energy Supplies and Resources Policy, for example, made the following recommendation: We recognize that coal is a great national asset and endorse a cooperative study to determine what research and development could be undertaken. The coal industry and both Federal and State Governments should participate in this study and its costs. Representatives of the coal industry have agreed that such a study should be initiated. Accordingly, Felix E. Wormser, Assistant Secretary - Mineral Resources, United States Department of the Interior, requested the Bureau of Mines and Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., to conduct a survey of current research on bituminous coal. In addition to this survey, studies were made to determine research projects that would be of value to the coal industry.

This paper describes the development of a life-of-mine schedule (LOM) for one of the world's largest known sedimentary copper-cobalt districts located in the Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A particular feature of the Tenke Fungurume LOM schedule is the considerable number of pits/phases for scheduling, each competing to provide the best ore available to a capacity-constrained process facility. This paper discusses the LOM scheduling objectives and constraints, data preprocessing steps such as ore binning, block aggregation and clustering analysis as a scheduling aid, the mine scheduling approach and results and conclusions. Ventilation on demand (VOD) has been demonstrated to significantly reduce operating costs for ventilation fans, by reducing fan output to meet demand. The most effective method for reducing operating costs is to use variable speed drives to adjust the speed of ventilation fans as required – this achieves significantly larger power savings that damper or vane control alone.However, this mode of control will significantly increase the number of speed cycles the ventilation fans will experience. Fabricated impellers have a limited number of start stop cycles based on the materials and method of construction, and the operating stresses due to centrifugal forces. This means that fans experiencing constant or regular speed changes will experience a reduced fatiguelife compared with fans that are run at constant speed.The fatigue life of fans operated under various speeds using VOD is difficult to predict, as it is dependent on the magnitude of speed changes, and the frequency, which will be varied to meet demand. It is important to be able to estimate remaining fatigue life to assist in maintenance planning and avoid unplanned maintenance activities.This paper will review extensive VOD data on fan operating conditions from two primary mine ventilation fans. This paper will demonstrate how this data can be used to calculate accumulated fatigue and predict the remaining fatigue life, and how this compares with fixed speed or non-VOD controlled fans.The increased maintenance costs for the impellers will also be estimated, and compared to the operating cost savings using VOD, to determine if the savings outweigh the additional maintenance costs.

This paper presents measurement and analysis of the dynamic response of a five-storey building to very high frequency excitation (>100 Hz) from blasting vibrations originating from a contiguous excavation of rock. Velocity response measurements in the rock and on the structure were employed to calculate the time-correlated dynamic displacement response of the building to blasting. Time-correlated structure response measurements are needed to advance the understanding of the response of urban structures to high-frequency excitation. Current regulations and understanding are based upon measurements of the response of one- to two-storey residential structures by 10 to 40 Hz excitation. The extension of these observations to taller structures when excited by high-frequency excitation needs to be investigated further.Measurements show that the amplification patterns at the ground level and top of the structure match or are lower than that observed by the US Bureau of Mines (Siskind et al, 1980) for the shorter residential structures. They decrease with increasing peak particle velocity. From the measurements, the global transverse shear strains found by differentiating ground floor and top displacements were calculated to be 12 µstrains. Time-correlated bottom and top of structure displacements show that building response may be more reflective of wave propagation up the structure than whole-structure inter-storey drift.In addition, a 3D model was used to compare computed displacements and strains to measured results. Modelled responses varied considerably, both in magnitude and location of the maximum strain. No conclusion can be made regarding the best 3D model to employ to simulate building response. More data such as motions measured at many points in the structure are needed. Maximum inter-storey transverse shear strains calculated with the model were found through the acceleration excitation and were less than 12 µstrains for 37 mm/s rock motion excitation. Bureau of Mines research on the mining, preparation, and utilization of coal is directed toward developing and encouraging safer and more efficient mining practices and preparing and utilizing coals to the best advantage.

When I retired in the fall of 1998, I looked forward to spending a lot less time traveling and a lot more time around home. After 4 years, I’m still traveling and still wondering how to find a few more hours in the day.

Some of the challenges facing the flotation of base metal sulphides are the opening of new and varying ore bodies as well as maintaining essential skills in plants. Flotation reagent research focuses not only on improving flotation grade and recovery, but also on producing reagents robust enough to cope with changes. A group of recently developed co-collectors, activators, depressants and frothers are described together with a summary of results measured on base metal sulphide ores.

Activated nanoporous biocarbon (aNBC) was prepared using E. grandis wood as a precursor material. Oxidated activated nanoporous biocarbon (ox-aNBC) sample was obtained from the aNBC by oxidation with nitric acid. The samples were tested as Pt nanoparticles catalysts support for ethanol oxidation reaction and as electrode materials for supercapacitors. The porous structure, chemical properties, and the structural and morphological characteristic of the materials were correlated with their electrochemical behaviour. Biocarbon materials showed similar high specific surface area. The oxidation treatment increases the content of the oxygenated and nitrogenated surface functional groups but without appreciably change in the nanostructure characteristic. The aNBC supported Pt nanocatalyst has better electrocatalytic performance for EOR. Oxygenated functional groups have a marked effect on the supercapacitors electrode behaviour, increasing the total electrical capacitance by pseudocapacitive contribution, but with a negative effect on the cell electrical resistance and cell response time.

According to reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, as of Jamary 1, 1930, there were 1,035 natural-gasoline plants in the United States, with a total daily capacity of 10,516,000 gallons. (These data do not include one small plant in Alaska.) The last similar survey, that of Jamary 1, 1928, showed a total of 1,155 plants of 8,048,000 gallons daily capa- city. This in two years time the number of plants has decreased by 120, but the total capacity has increased 2,468,000 gallons or 31 per cent. This is roughly equivalent to the gain in production over the same periodi Over half of the increase in total capacity was registered in California, where the development of flush oil production having a comparatively high gas-oil ratio in such fields as Santa Fe Springs led to construction of some new plants and material enlargement of others. Of the total plants, 999 were operating on Jamary 1, 1930, and 36 were shut down. This compares with 1,060 operating and 95 shut down two years ago, which indicates a tendency to dismantle plants as soon as they become obsolete or umrofitable. The total daily capacity of the plants operating on Jamiary 1, 1930, amounted to 10,278,000 gallons, or 98 per cent of the total, leaving only 238,000 gallons, or 2 per cent, for the shut-down plants. This contrasts with the refining industry, which usually has 5 per cent of its total capacity idle; the difference is due to the relative ease with which a refiner can secure a crude supply as against the difficulty the natural gasoline manufacturer has in reestablishing his gas connections. During 1929 the average total daily capacity of the operating plants was 9,899,000 gallons, while the average daily production amounted to 6,015,000 gallons. This indicates that the plants operated during 1929 at 61 per cent of their capacity. Although over 60 plants were dismantled in Oklahoma during 1929 the State continued to rank first in total mumber. The floodable volume of longwall gob can be of great importance in developing accurate coal mine operation plans, particularly for mine water management and environmental control strategies. Given the inaccessibility and difficulty in direct measurement of gob characteristics following gob recompression, hydrologic, geomechanical, and spatial data and principles were used to solve for the porosity and height of the residual gob using a mathematical model framework and bulking-based techniques. Based on this approach, gob porosity of Appalachian longwalls appears to be tighter than previously reported, ranging between 4.99 and 14.31%. Residual gob height, as normalized with respect to mine extraction height, ranges between 1.90 and 2.45. A novel, bedding-based bulking approach is ampliative with respect to existing roof caving and bulking fundamentals, as it has greater explanatory value compared with the traditional, lithologic-based bulking application. The efficacy of using the residual gob characteristics determined by the mathematical model and bedding-based bulking is examined using a causal comparative method, whereby time series prediction of historical groundwater rebound is compared with observed mine pool elevation data. Prediction accuracy is significantly improved using a prototype model to calculate void volume of longwall gob, specifically, the dependence of porosity of the gob material upon the longwall width to overburden depth ratio for movement basins of subcritical and critical panel widths. The potential implication of these findings toward hydrologic, geomechanical, and ventilation studies of longwall gob could be significant.

EDC established an Environmental Review Framework in 1999. Throughout the early fall of 2001, the Corporation held public consultations across Canada to strengthen that framework, leading to a public release on November 15, 2001 of a report summarising the results of these consultations. Following this, the Corporation implemented strengthened environmental review requirements in the form of its Environmental Review Directive, in compliance with legislated amendments to Canada?s Export Development Act that went into effect on December 21, 2001. Over the past few years, there has been a global trend towards an increase in the social and environmental requirements of multilateral/bilateral financial institutions and export credit agencies. More recently, this activity has focussed on capturing institutions that have not yet adopted similar requirements and, more specifically, on developing a convergence of the requirements from institution to institution. This paper describes EDC?s new ERD and some of the initiatives that have taken place or are in process that are moving international financial institutions toward converging their environmental and social requirements for projects in the private sector.

The Federal Bureau of Mines studied the thermal decomposition of the nitrides of the Group V A metals (CbN, Ta3N5, and VN) with the goal of preparing high-purity metals. Solid-state purification and arc and electron-beam melting were examined. Electron-beam melting proved to be the most efficient means of nitrogen and oxygen removal. Columbium and tantalum of 99.9-pct purity were prepared by this technique; in the case of vanadium, however, nitrogen could not be reduced below the solid-solution level.
