The 19th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Civic Center, Charleston, w. Va., on October 2, 3, and 4, 1961. The meet was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with State mine inspection agencies, management and labor of the mineral extractive industries, and other groups interested in safety. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1961 contest. Members of the Arrangements Committee were: George Trevorrow (chairman), Bituminous Coal Operators' Association; James B. Benson, Southern Coal Producers' Association; Charles Ferguson, United Mine Workers of America; Harry Gandy, Jr., National Coal Association; and James Westfield, Bureau of Mines.

For most practical rock engineering purposes, stress versus strength conditions around underground openings for which rock masses fail and their various modes of failure, are reasonably well-understood and predictable. Some rock masses and particular rock types fail slowly and relatively quietly. However, others can fail rapidly, violently and maybe with the ejection of significant broken rock. In some countries and in some mines, the latter style of violent fracturing and failure of the rock mass is referred to as ‘strain bursting’. It can be alarming and extremely hazardous to nearby miners and machines. For such situations, the design and installation of appropriate ground support, to provide a safe work place, can be challenging. At any particular mine site, it’s often generally understood which local rock masses (rock types) are prone to strain bursting. Competent and strong siliceous rocks and some massive sulphides are often the main offenders. While some neighbouring, equally-competent and strong rocks might also fail, they do so more quietly and without ejection. To understand this contrast, a better understanding of the fracturing process is required other than simple and standard strength versus stress considerations. Suites of standard intact rock properties from numerous Australian mines have been used to define and help understand different high-stress failure styles for component intact rock; especially those prone to violent fracturing (strain bursting). Simple considerations of micro-fracturing (defects in the intact material), plus the available energy at failure versus the energy consumed during fracturing, distinguishes between over-stressed and competent rock types that fracture violently and those that don’t. Mining faces many environmental, social and regulatory liabilities of which water management is just one. Others include site rehabilitation, carbon emissions, biodiversity offsets, strategic cropping land, subsidence, and noise and dust generation. Management of these liabilities is commonly seen as a cost of doing business and each is often independently addressed, bypassing the opportunity to reduce costs through integrated approaches. Furthermore, approaches to dealing with these liabilities tend to be constrained by a prevailing culture of engineered solutions and lack of appreciation of risk associated with alternative and hybrid alternative-engineered solutions. Suboptimal outcomes can also be reinforced by rigid regulatory constraints. While the cost of addressing operational liabilities may be a small proportion of overall mine management costs, failure to do so effectively may influence social licence to operate and, as recently demonstrated by the decision of the NSW Land and Environment Court to block expansion of the Warkworth Mine near Singleton, absolute licence to operate.Integration of environmental, social and regulatory liabilities with value-creating and risk-reduction opportunities such as beneficial water use, carbon bio-sequestration, habitat connectivity, keyline farming, improved grazing design and management systems, windbreaks and visual screens, presents opportunities to reduce risk and create value. This potential may achieve overall improved outcomes in both economic and non-economic mine performance criteria.Two case studies in beneficial use of waste water from the mining and coal seam gas (CSG) sectors (which operate under different legislation) will be used to illustrate the potential to address mine development, operational and closure liabilities by understanding opportunities to reduce risk and create value through a holistic water management framework. The technical requirements and alternative approaches to beneficial use of mine water are addressed, along with the direct economic benefits for mine operational costs and opportunities to positively engage communities and build resilience into social licence to operate. This Bureau of Mines report investigates shield mechanics by describing the elastic response and interaction of shield components to applied vertical and horizontal displacements for various canopy and base contact configurations. This research provides information on generalized shield mechanics, which is applicable in describing the behavior of all two-leg shield supports. Utilizing mechanics of materials concepts and known kinematic relationships for two-leg shield supports, free-body diagrams are constructed for each shield component illustrating internal axial, shear, and bending moment responses required to maintain equilibrium for each load case evaluated. Predicted shield (component) responses are verified by controlled displacement of instrumented longwall shields in the Bureau's mine roof simulator (MRS). Conclusions drawn from these analyses include shield structural responses are significantly dependent upon canopy and base contact configurations. Applied displacements also significantly affect shield responses. Horizontal displacement produces different responses than those produced by vertical displacements. The direction of horizontal displacement is also significant in evaluating shield response. Applications of shield mechanics to in situ support monitoring are also discussed. An objective of this research program is to establish unique shield responses to identify in situ load conditions.

"This work has as its objective to evaluate the effect of the incorporation of a glass powder waste obtained from discarded and Hg-cleaned fluorescent lamp into clayey ceramics used to fabricate bricks and roofing tiles. Formulations were prepared with incorporation of the waste in amounts up to 10 wt.% into the clayey body. Rectangular specimens were prepared by uniaxial mold-press at 20 MPa to fire at 850 and 1050°C. The physical and mechanical properties evaluated were: linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength. The microstructure of the fired ceramics was evaluated by optical microscopy. The results showed that the waste incorporation significantly improved the evaluated properties mainly at 1050°C.IntroductionFluorescent lamps use mercury as a main component for its operation. This metal is potentially toxic and can contaminate soils, animals and water bodies. The problem is aggravated if considerations are made with respect to the amount of lamps that are commercialized and discharged in emergent countries like Brazil [ 1].By using appropriate recycling processes applied to discharging fluorescent lamps it is possible to reuse most constituents of these lamps into new productive processes. A study has shown that one million common fluorescent lamps can generate 900,000 tubes of clean glass [2]. Moreover, this Hg-cleaned gloss may be recycled in different products.In fact, to recovery and recycle all materials that constitute the lamp instead of discharging them. This action protects the soil avoiding the formation of environmental passives [3]. It is also relevant to mention that the glass from fluorescent lamps is 100% recyclable while its permanence in the environment would correspond to very long time pollution, since its decomposition time is undetermined [4]."

A series of laboratory evaluations examined the impact of water spray pressure, curtain setback distance, and external and underboom spray use for controlling respirable dust levels and sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas concentrations around a continuous mining machine. This mining machine was equipped with a flooded-bed dust scrubber and was positioned in the box or slab cut. Exhaust line brattice was used for all tests. Dust levels were measured in the return airway and at locations representing the operators of the continuous mining machine and the standard and off-standard shuttle cars. Increasing water pressure or using the underboom sprays produced no significant impacts on dust levels, although their interactions did produce some significant impacts. Increasing curtain setback distance often elevated dust levels, likely by reducing the amount of airflow reaching the face. Use of the external sprays created additional airflow around the mining machine that pushed the dust cloud past the scrubber inlets. This significantly increased dust levels at all sampling locations. Tracer gas levels were measured on the off-curtain and curtain sides of the cutter head and in the return airway. Increasing water pressure generally led to significantly increased gas levels on the curtain side, although a slight decrease was observed on the off-curtain side with the machine in the box cut. Increasing setback distance elevated gas levels on both sides of the cutter head and in the return by limiting the quantity of ventilation airflow reaching the face. Use of the external sprays provided additional airflow along the off-curtain side of the machine, significantly reducing gas levels in this region. These sprays adversely impacted the dilution and removal of gas on the curtain side of the cutter head. Use of the underboom sprays adversely impacted gas levels on both sides of the cutter head. Use of the external sprays provided the best control of respirable dust and face gas concentrations. The smaller increases in miner operator dust levels produced by these sprays were offset by larger reductions in face gas levels on the off-curtain side of the cutter head. Although the underboom sprays minimally impacted respirable dust levels, use of these sprays was not recommended because they increased face gas levels.

"Abstract -The East Bull Lake gabbro-anorthosite intrusion is one of several Early Proterozoic layered matie intrusions occurring along the Southern Province - Superior Province boundary in the Elliot Lake - Sudbury region, Ontario. The base of the East Bull Lake intrusion comprises abundant plagioclase cumulates (Leucogabbronorite Zone) hosting two distinct styles of sulfide mineralization: (1) disseminated magmatic sulfides, and (2) disseminated to massive, structurally controlled sulfides. Both types of mineralization are enriched in Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni. The host rocks to the sulfide mineralization display a range of interesting features including nodular textures, dendritic­ pegmatitic matie pods, inclusion-rich zones (pyroxenite, anorthosite and granitic inclusions) and mag­ matie breccias. Disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite occur in concentrations of up to lOOJo within erratically distributed gossan pods near the base of the intrusion. The sulfides were originally precipitated from intercumulus liquids, but were subsequently recrystallized and locally remobilized along fractures during the major period of metamorphism and deformation that af­ fected the East Bull Lake intrusion. The base- and precious-metal tenor of the structurally controlled sulfides can be explained by extensive remobilization and reconcentration of the pre-existing magmatic sulfides in the vicinity of a major shear zone. Both styles of sulfide mineralization locally contain ppm abundances of POE + Au and are generally Pd- and Cu-rich, although both display large variations in Pd :Pt and Cu:Ni ratios. The magmatic sulfides are more strongly enriched in POE and contain up to 1470 ppm Pd in 100% sulfide. Severa! factors, including source characteristics, magmatic processes (crustal assimilation, fractional crystallization) and post-magmatic inter­ action with hydrous fluid, have influenced the present distribution of POE, Cu and Ni in the East Bull Lake intrusion .The magmatic sulfide occurrences from the East Bull Lake intrusion compare favorably with marginal-type deposits from rift-related intrusions (Noril'sk-Talnakh region, Siberia; Duluth Com­ plex, U.S.A.) in terrns of their distribution, but are most similar to reef-type POE deposits with respect to their base- and precious-metal geochemistry. The combination of high POE tenors and large tonnages that is observed for the POE-Cu-Ni mineralization from the East Bull Lake intrusion suggests that a good potential exists for the presence of economie concentrations of Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni in the intrusion. On a global scale, the East Bull Lake intrusion is part of a suite of Early Proterozoic plutons, many of which contain significant volumes of stratiform and/or marginal­ type POE-Cu-Ni mineralization. The East Bull Lake intrusion is also one of the oldest mineralized intrusions derived from a sub-Superior Province mantle source region that has given rise to several significant magmatic POE-Cu-Ni deposits during the period 2.5 Ga to 1.1 Ga."

Desliming is a method of classifying mineral particles, which aims at removal of slimes so as to prepare the slurry to downstream concentration processes. It is a common item in mineral processing flowsheets, being mostly carried out in hydrocyclones, in which separation is result of complex fluid flow and its interaction with the mineral particles. When dealing with particles contained in size ranges relevant to desliming, the challenge in describing the process is even greater. The work deals with the fitting of the Narasimha-Mainza model of classification in hydrocyclones to data from desliming an itabirite iron ore, for prediction of feed slurry flowrate, corrected cut size and short-circuit to the underflow. As such, tests were conducted at both pilot and industrial plants in KREBS 2.7” and 4” cyclones operating under a variety of conditions. In the validation of the model, deviations between the predicted and measured values were lower than 34% for feed slurry flowrate, less than 22% for corrected cut size and less than 18% for short-circuit for underflow.

Both immediate and long-range economic factors are associated with blending anthrafines to produce metallurgical cokes, and they warrant careful consideration of the technology of carbonization of blends containing significant proportions of inert substances in general and anthrafines in particular. This situation has resulted in numerous publications dealing with various phases of the overall problem, particular emphasis being placed on the effects of inert substances on the yields and quality of cokes produced. Because relatively little attention has been given to the expansion behavior of coal blends containing inert substances, an investigation of this problem was undertaken using the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. Since experiments in the sole-heated oven do not measure wall pressures directly, a new method of interpretation of sole-heated oven data, which permits estimates of wall pressures, has been proposed.

Eveleth taconite company was formed in 1963 to mine and beneficiate taconite on the Mesabi range of Minnesota. Its thunderbird mine is located midway between the cities of Eveleth and Virginia, Minnesota, and the crude ore is transported by rail to its Fairlane plant approximately ten miles to the south of the mine, "figure 1". As is implied by the names of the mine and plant, the ford motor company is the principal owner of Eveleth taconite company, with an 85% interest, Oglebay Norton company holds the remaining 15% interest and also is the managing agent.

We Americans pride ourselves that ours is the greatest, most advanced and most civilized nation in the world, yet statistics indicate that apparently we have little appreciation for the lives and limbs of the people whose efforts give us whatever greatness we possess. The latest available statistics indicate that the annual accident death rate per 100,000 of population is nearly 80 or far higher than that of any other country in the world except Chile; is more than double the rate in Hungary, Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Finland; is nearly double that of England, Wales, the Union of South Africa, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, and Scotland; and is 25 to 40 percent greater than Switzerland, France and Canada. To make matters worse, from the viewpoint of mining; the latest available statistics give mining by all adds the worst accident rate of the major industrial occupations in the United States, the accident severity rate for mining in 1935 being listed by the National Safety Council as 10.14, the next highest rate being 4.52 for construction, and the average rate for 30 main industries being 1.58. IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY RECORDS Offsetting to a slight extent this rather dark picture is the fact that starting about 1930 the mine-accident rate in both coal and metal mining began to fall, reaching an all-time "low" in metal mining in 1932 and in coal mining in 1933. It now appears probable that the year 1936 has again lowered the accident rate in coal mining and this, together with the fact that the years 1933, 1934, 193 5, and 1936 all set much lover accident rates in coal mining than ware achieved for any similar previous period, gives hope that the trend is definitely in the right direction, though from the above figures mine-accident severity has a long, tedious road to travel before it becomes as low as the severity rate of all other major industries in the United States.

"Geotechnical stability analysis and design in open pit mines requires access to representative geological, structural, hydrogeological, and rock mass models. The quality and quantity of collected geomechanical data used to build such models can have significant implications in the design of safe and economically viable slopes. Data collection is a continuous process throughout the life of a mine. The process starts from exploration to conceptual/preliminary feasibility, feasibility, design and construction, operations (early production/late production), and mine closure.As geomechanical data is often limited at an early stage of a project, the estimated variability of the geotechnical factors may be larger than the actual data variability. This can potentially result in a conservative selection of the pit slope angle. Collecting additional geomechanical data at later stages of the mine development may contribute to reducing the uncertainty associated with the geotechnical properties and a steeper slope angle may be used for the design. This can result in significant economic benefits.This paper investigates the impact of access to new data over time, following a series of geomechanical data collection campaigns, on design decisions. This is illustrated by comparing the resulting slope design, at three stages of the mine project, at a South African open pit mine. To demonstrate this, a series of slope stability analyses were performed using limit equilibrium tools. For each project stage, the slope angle design was modified until a similar probability of failure of 5% or less was obtained. The corresponding factor of safety distributions for each project stage were then compared to evaluate the impact of collecting additional data on the resulting slope design.The results showed that data variability can differ significantly from one project stage to another. Data variability may be greater at more advanced project stages (i.e. a wider distribution of the factor of safety). Furthermore, the results showed that, even for the cases with greater variability, steeper slope angles were possible at more advanced stages for the proposed design requirement (probability of failure < 5%). In this investigation, as more data became available, the uncertainty associated with data variability could be sufficiently reduced to allow the selection of less conservative slope angles. This can be used as a managerial tool in developing data collection strategies and allocating the necessary funds, and can lead to important economic benefits to the mining operation."

"An airborne dust study was undertaken at a Southwestern Pennsylvania underground bituminous coal mine by the Pennsylvania Department of Mines and Mineral Industries in 1964 for the purpose of making recommendations and requirements regarding compliance with health and safety aspects of The Bituminous Coal Mining Laws of Pennsylvania, approved by the legislature on July 17, 1961. The study was designed to accurately represent the airborne dust conditions of the subject mine. Sampling by midget impinger of specific worker locations throughout the mine was accomplished. Sample analyses yielded dust concentrations to mppcf, particle size determinations in cumulative per cent less than specified cut-off diameters, and determinations of free silica percentages in total dust samples. The data from this study is further analyzed, and the results are presented.INTRODUCTIONThe Bituminous Coal Mining Laws of Pennsylvania, enacted in 1961, prompted a study of respirable coal mine dust by the Department of Mines and Minerals Industry in 1964. In recognition of their obligation for ensuring the health and safety of bituminous coal miners, the department set out to characterize the airborne dust of mines throughout the commonwealth. The purpose of the studies was to make recommendations and requirements for compliance with the law and for control of airborne coal mine dust in Pennsylvania mines.One such study was undertaken at an underground bituminous coal mine operating in the Pittsburgh Seam in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The study was desig11ed to sample specific worker locations throughout the mine site and characterize the respirable dust relative to each of them. A midget impinger was used to gather respirable range dust samples during an 8-hour shift. Continuous miner operator, roof bolter, stoper bolter, loading machine operator, shuttle car operator, gathering motorman, mainline motorman, and rotary dumper jobs were sampled underground. In addition, barge mover, coal sampler, fine coal operator, heavy media operator, and boiler room attendant occupations were sampled on the surface. The surface sampling was over a 71-hour shift because of UMWA contract provisions."

An investigation was undertaken to devise a new method for reducing dust spread during blasting demolition utilising water tube and detonating cord. Modelling of smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) with AUTODYN software was initially completed to determine the expected diffusing behaviour of the water tube. The actual behaviour was then captured with high speed videos during each experiment, and each result analysed in detail. Water mist diffusion was generated and analysed by changing three key variables. In sequence, these included changing the location of detonating cord in the tube, the charge quantity and the tube diameter.As a result of experiments and simulation, optimum design for ideal diffusion behaviour was suggested and each behaviour of water mist was classified by diffusing shape of water tube as the design criteria.CITATION:Ko, Y-H, Kim, J-K, Kim, S-J, Park, H, Kim, H-S, Cho, S-H and Yang, H-S, 2015. The objective of the research performed A for the Bureau of Mines on this contract was to develop a portable instrument for the detection of carbon monoxide (CO) in a mine environment. The desired characteristics were sensitivity and specificity for CO with a stable calibration. The sensor of the instrument was to be of metal oxide composition, requiring low power for compatibility with the types of batteries presently used in personal equipment in mines. The solid state design was also desired for ruggedness and small size. A key design feature of the instrument was to be provided by adherence to the intrinsic safety design requirements for electrical equipments operated in potentially exposive mine atmosphere. The Research Triangle Institute has prior experience in developing a solid state oxygen sensor using a thin film of zinc-oxide (Ref. 1) and experience in fabricating thin film devices. Solid state sensors utilized by other workers (Refs. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) have included metal and semiconductor films and crystals of materials like carbon and aluminum oxide for the measurement of water vapor in the air and have relied upon measuring resistance and capacitance changes in the sensor in response to adsorbed vapors or gases. Since the effect of carbon monoxide in changing the resistance of various materials such as molybdenum, platinum, and zinc oxide had been reported (Refs. 7, 8, 9, 10), the requirements appeared to be realisable, although it was recognized even at the inception of the work that specificity to carbon monoxide might require the incorporation of more than one sensor.

Inúmeras indústrias necessitam de sistemas de tratamento de água que favoreçam o processo de descarte de seus efluentes, além do aproveitamento do reuso de água. A mineração e siderurgia podem apresentar rejeitos com metais, que necessitam de tratamentos econômicos e sustentáveis. A biossorção é um exemplo de técnica que vem ganhando interesse em diversas áreas da pesquisa. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a porcentagem de remoção de íons de níquel de uma solução monoelementar de cloreto de níquel II (NiCl2+) em pH 2, 4 e 6. Para isso, utilizou-se um sistema de batelada, e 1g de consórcio bacteriano liofilizado (sem ser autoclavado) isolado de amostra de terra. Os resultados indicaram que a eficiência da biossorção foi maior para o pH 6, e que o consórcio bacteriano foi eficiente na remoção de íons de Ni2+.
