The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health investigated how the starting of induction motors may cause nuisance tripping of short-circuit protection on coal mine power systems. This research had a dual purpose: 1) to identify how motor-start waveforms differ from those for short circuits and 2) to devise a method to provide short-circuit protection without intentional time delays to account for motor starts. This technology will help ensure that surface temperatures of energized electrical apparatus will not exceed gas or dust ignition thresholds when short circuits occur.

Cerro Vanguardia SA (CVSA), property of AngloGold Ashanti, mines gold and silver from a system of vetiforme orebodies located in the south of the Argentine Patagonia, in the Province of Santa Cruz.Surface mining techniques are applied to develop a series of narrow pits with an average waste to ore ratio of 26:1. This quite unique constraint brings into focus the need to maximise inter-ramp and final wall angles, leading to a strong need to optimise wall control drilling and blasting in order to reduce back-break damage to an absolute minimum.The paper describes a program of applied investigation and design modification implemented during?2008?and?2009 in?two?separate pits of Cerro Vanguardia. Three distinct yet complementary damage mechanisms were identified and observed during the field components of the work; vibration induced strain fracturing, surface cratering around blasthole collars and quasi-static loading and unloading of the surrounding rock mass as a consequence of poorly controlled confinement.With these mechanisms identified, a measurement, modelling and modification campaign was conducted in order to reduce the incidence of each source of damage. Interactive design analysis and modelling, near-field vibration measurement, video capture and the application of electronic initiation technology were supported by seed wave modelling and topographic evaluation of the achieved results.Results point to the usefulness of simulation techniques for determining optimum delay timing to reduce vibration impact, while the visualisation of explosive energy distribution produced by drilling and explosive loading decisions assists in reducing the probability of over-confinement.This paper presents relevant aspects of the two fieldwork campaigns:1) describing the application of the techniques, and2) summarising the results obtained.

THE northern anthracite fields, although facing the same economic problems as the southern fields, are confronted with the additional problem of fast dwindling reserves of anthracite which can be conventionally and economically won. The mining of coal which remains in thin beds and the recovery of pillars from areas heretofore considered unrecoverable, either by reason of cost or surface restriction, pose problems of in- creasing importance to the economic life of the northern field operations. Successful approaches have Been made to this problem and other work is being performed that holds promise. There exists in the northern anthracite field millions of tons of solid coal, the recovery of which has not been too successful due to the following inherent operating faults: inability to concentrate producing areas; the great quantities of rock to be cut and handled, lack of consideration of proper sequence and speed of second mining, and the continued use of the mine car as the basis of payment. A mining system that has successfully solved these major problems has been in operation in the Scranton area since 1944. Over 1% million tons have been produced from veins varying from 3 to 4% ft thick by this method, which is known as the multiple panel-triangular system-conveyor mining.

Recently artin has indicated that the recovery of resistivity at 145°C following elongation of molybdenum at room temperature was the result of the annihilation of vacancies. The activation energy for this process was, according to Martin, 1.26 ev. This energy seems to be a reasonable one for the activation energy for the diffusion of vacancies in molybdenum. However, impurity atoms such as carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen4 have an activation energy for diffusion in molybdenum of the same order of magnitude (i.e., 1.45, 1.15, and 2.09 ev, respectively). Cottrell and Churchman have already correlated the return of impurity atoms to dislocations in cold-worked iron with the return of the upper and lower yield point. According to cottrel16 the diffusion of carbon atoms to dislocations results in the return of the yield point. As the carbon atoms become trapped by dislocations, Bhatia has shown that a decrease in the electrical resistivity is to be expected. Cottrell and Churchman were able to correlate experimentally the decrease in electrical resistivity with the return of the yield point. Since one would expect strain aging to occur in molybdenum, an experiment was performed to determine whether the resistivity recovery at 150°C for molybdenum cold-worked at room temperature can be correlated with the return of an upper and lower yield point. For this experiment 3/16-in. tensile bars of Climax molybdenum, 99.961 pct pure, were used. The specimens were annealed at 1000° C for 1 hr in an argon atmosphere and then were elongated up to 10 pct on a Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton FGT

"Nickel saprolite ores are normally mined as feed to Fe-Ni smelters or Ni matte smelting operations. The smelting processes typically require high Ni cut-off grades of approximately 1.5 to 2.2% Ni, depending on the operation. These very high cut-off grades result in a significant portion of the saprolite profile being regarded as “waste” and hence having little to no value. The Starved Acid Leach Technology (SALT) was developed to recover nickel and cobalt from nickel saprolites and Caron plant residues. Relatively small amounts of acid are applied to ground saprolites or Caron residues in order to selectively leach nickel and cobalt. The leaching is performed atmospherically under low free acid conditions. Nickel and cobalt may be recovered from the leachate as a mixed hydroxide. The mixed hydroxide may be added directly to a saprolite smelting operation or refined separately. InCoR Technologies is advancing the application of SALT at a number of sites. Bench scale testing has provided a relationship between acid addition and nickel extraction in leaching. Conceptual engineering studies have been completed by SNC Lavalin. The simplicity of the SALT technology provides the benefits of low capital and operating cost and an expected rapid ramp up to full production.INTRODUCTION The recent history of hydrometallurgical nickel laterite treatment plants has demonstrated mixed financial and operational performance. Table 1 summarizes the next generation plants built after the financial and/or technical failure of the Bulong, Cawse and Murrin-Murrin plants in Australia. The Coral Bay plants (Line 1 and 2) stand out (and now Taganito) as relatively low capital cost, simple (no acid plant, production of mixed sulfide product), and modest in scale (10, 12 and 36 kt Ni/a). However, the other plants in the list (Ravensthorpe, Ramu, Goro and Ambatovy) are all characterized by financial and technical challenges. All plants have a very high capital cost ($67,000 to $120,000 USD/annual t of Ni production). Ravensthorpe was sold by BHP Billiton after a poor startup. Ramu has had a steady ramp up but only produces mixed hydroxide for refining by others. Goro has had an extended construction period (since 2001), is high cost and has been very slow to ramp up to design production rates. Ambatovy has had a steady ramp up."

On the basis of metallographic and cooling-rate studies of 15 U-Zr alloys, a new version of the 6 phase region of the U-Zr phase diagram is proposed. IN several published diagrams of U-Zr alloy system:' there is good agreement that at elevated temperatures complete solid solubility exists between y uranium and ß zirconium. Similarly, there is reasonably good agreement concerning the uranium-rich and zirconium-rich ends of the diagram. However, there is no agreement concerning the nature of the diagram at intermediate compositions and at temperatures below about 650°C. The early work of Saller et al.8 hows an intermediate phase, 6. In a later diagram by Saller and Rough' shown in Fig. 1, the d phase field is drawn with dotted lines, indicating doubt that this phase exists. The diagram of Summers-Smith2 does not show the d phase. More recently Holden and Seymour' have shown that in the composition range 40 to 60 wt pet Zr, the high-temperature ? phase, which is body-cen-tered-cubic, transforms to an ordered structure, 8. They found that the order-disorder transformation occurs between 595° and 610°C, and presented a diagram based on the study of four different alloy compositions. Most recently Saller et a1.5 presented a new diagram which differs with respect to the composition limits of the 8 field from the others proposed by these authors. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the boundaries of the d phase field. Experimental Procedures and Results Alloys—Buttons, weighing 80 g of 15 different alloy compositions were prepared by arc melting Mal-linckrodt uranium and iodide-process zirconium in a water-cooled crucible. A controlled atmosphere of argon and helium was maintained in the furnace. Prior to making each button, a sacrificial button of zirconium was melted to increase the purity of the furnace atmosphere. Each alloy was then melted six times to improve its homogeneity. Subsequently the alloy buttons were jacketed in copper and hot rolled to slabs at 775°C. From these slabs, specimens were machined for chemical, thermal, and metallographic analyses, Table I gives both the estimated chemical composition of the alloys, and the values which were obtained by analysis. The oxygen contents varied from 0.013 to 0.032 pet, nitrogen from 0.0014 to 0.014 pet, and carbon from 0.0013 to 0.011 pet. The purity of the alloys ranged from 99.947 to 99.975 pet. Thermal Analysis—The specimens for thermal analysis were blocks 11/4 x 1/4 x % in. The bead of a calibrated thermocouple was placed between two of these blocks and molybdenum wire was wrapped around the assembly. Each assembly was sealed in a quartz capsule having an argon atmosphere. The capsule was placed inside a refractory crucible which was heated in a furnace. "A pneumoconiosis is best defined as the accumulation of dust in the lungs and the tissue's reaction to iu presence. Thus, silicosis is the name given to the fibrotic disease of the lungs caused by inhalation of dust containing silicon dioxide, primarily in the free crystalline form. Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), which was originally thought to be a variant of silicosis, results from inhalation of coal mine dust that usually contains relatively small amounts of free crystalline silica.HISTORYSilicosis is the older and more well known of these mineral pneumoconiosis. In contrast, CWP was not recognized as different from silicosis until the pivotal work of Collis and Gilchrist. 26 They noted that coal trimmers, i.e., special stevedores who leveled coal in the holds of ships at the Cardiff and Swansea docks in Wales, developed identical nodules on the chest radiograph to those of underground miners. The difference was that these men had never worked underground and that the coal was washed before it was loaded into ships; thus, it was unlikely that these men were exposed to silica. Gough54 examined the lungs of coal trimmers who died and found that the histologic appearance of the pulmonary lesions was distinctly different from the whorled nodules seen in silicosis. Gough,"" and subsequently Heppleston,"" then showed that the lung lesions in coal trimmers were similar to those in underground coal miners and different from those of classical silicosis. Nagelschmidt 78 analyzed the mineral content of miners' lungs that became available at autopsy. These studies caused him to propose a scheme in which the relative proportions of silica, other minerals, and/or coal deposited in the lungs determined the type of pulmonary response which develops, i.e., classical silicosis, mixed-dust disease, or CWP."

"INTRODUCTION Peat is the accumulated mass of plant materials that remain after partial decay under specific conditions. In the swampy peat bogs dead material which falls on the surface immediately is attacked by fungi and aercbic bacteria. Decay under these conditions is rapid, but of relatively short duration, since the constant addition of new material soon forces the older layers below the water level, in this position, without access to oxygen, the plant constituents are attacked mainly by anaerobic bacteria, and decomposition proceeds slowly. The largest part of peat is contributed by the woody tissues of plants, the chief constituents of which are cellulose and lignin, together with a small proportion of hemicelluloses. During the normal process of biological decay celluloses disappear more rapidly than lignin. The result is a complex substance known as humin, from which the humic acids may be extracted.In 1826, Sprengel 5 found that when decayed plant materials were extracted with alinnli and the resulting black liquid acidified with mineral acid a brown gelatinous precipitate was formed. To this product, which was a brown amorphous powder when dry, he gave the name ""humic acid'. Since that time, chemists have used the name rather loosely to designate products which have been isolated by very diverse means from soils, decayed woods, peat, lignite, and coal. An excellent review of the early work on humic acids was published by Baumann 6 in 1909. This publication aroused the interest of Oden, who then investigated the humic acids. An account of Oden’s work, as a good survey of the literature, is contained in his monograph “Die Huminsauren”. 7"

"This paper examines the design issues associated with the integration of mineral processing within underground mining using a total systems approach. It demonstrates conceptual integrated system design options appropriate to a range of geological scenarios. Particular reference is then given to a case study of stoping in narrow base metal veins.The performance of such integrated systems in terms of productivity, economical and environmental criteria is demonstrated by means of simulation. Particular attention is given to the potential benefits to mine waste management. Processing technologies appear to offer genuine potential benefits, while underground mining methods may need to evolve further to facilitate full integration. This paper is based on industry supported research aimed at developing selective and clean underground mining systems. IntroductionTotal systems thinking is simple in principle but complex to implement. The premise is that to achieve optimum effectiveness and efficiency from a system, the complete system must be considered. Using this approach will avoid the situation where the optimization of a localized component of any system results in a negative impact on the performance of the complete system. Take for example the parts manager who reduces inventory costs without consideration of the consequences to the plant. If the plant goes down and a part is unavailable, it would then cost significantly more than the cost of having it in inventory (Ackoff, 1994).A tool for applying total systems thinking toward understanding and analyzing different mineral extraction options is the structured analysis and design techniques (SADT). Originally developed by Ross (1977), SADT is a formal systems engineering methodology (FIPS PUB, 1993) for process and enterprise modelling (Marca and McGowan, 1993). Figure 1 presents a highlevel structured analysis of the traditional or conventional metal extraction process. There are three sequential processes with several arrows entering or exiting each process. In SADT, inputs always enter from the left-hand side and exit as outputs of the process on the right-hand side. Constraints affecting the transformation of inputs to outputs enter the process from the top while resources or mechanisms enabling the transformation enter from the bottom. SADT is a hierarchical decomposition technique and further analysis is undertaken by expanding downward into each process."

Throughout all segments of the United States mining industry, 163 independent contractor employees were fatally injured between 1990 and 1997. Factors that contributed to these injuries were identified after reviewing descriptive information contained in Mine Safety and Health Administration fatality reports for each of the incidents. Thirty-three unique contributing factors were identified and multiple factors were noted for each fatality. Those most frequently discerned were "failure to follow `standard operating procedures"', (35% of the fatalities), "poor positioning of employee" (26% of the fatalities) and "failure to maintain equipment" (23% of the fatalities). Contributing factors were then associated with the accident and job classifications of the victims. Factors having the highest frequencies in the top five accident classifications where most fatalities occurred were as follows: powered haulage - "failure to maintain equipment"; machinery - "poor positioning of employee"; slip/fall of person - "inadequate fall protection" and "failure to wear safety line"; electrical - "equipment contact with power line"; and falling/rolling/sliding rock - "poor positioning of employee. " Among the job classifications in which most fatalities occurred, leading contributing factors were as follows: truck driver - "failure to follow standard operating procedures" and "poor positioning of employee"; laborer/utility man/pumper - "poor positioning of employee"; mechanic/ repairman and welder - "failure to follow standard operating procedures." Recommendations for utilizing contributing factor information as a basis for safety training are proposed. Training programs may be developed that inform independent contractor employees of factors which, in the past, have contributed to fatal injuries in their job classifications. Then, by combining this information with contributing factors identified in "related" accident classifications, a truly focused training intervention that addresses very specific workplace hazards may he developed.

The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (58 Stat., 190; 30 U.S.C. Sup., Secs. 321- 325) was approved by Congress April 5, 1944; it directed the Bureau of Mines to build demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and agricultural products. The most important oil-shale de- posits in the United States are in the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The oil shale of western Colorado generally is more amenable to exploitation, more persistent, and apparently richer than elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain Region. It occurs at the top of a high plateau surrounded by bold, nearly vertical escarpments 500 to 600 ft in height. The top 400 to 500 ft of these escarpments comprises an oil-shale measure that averages 15 gal of shale oil per ton; the bottom 70 to 100 ft of the measure, called the Mahogany Ledge, averages over 30 gal per ton. The full measure in a 1000-square-mile area is estimated to contain 300 billion barrels of shale oil;' the Mahogany Ledge is estimated to contain 100 billion barrels of oil. I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon’s pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon’s pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (157. ) of Professor Gershon’s pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

Reduce well construction and operation costs associated with in situ leach mining while increasing mineral recovery. Approach To accommodate the size of centrifugal pumps presently in use, in situ leaching production wells are typically drilled to 6 inches in diameter, while monitor wells are drilled to measure 4 inches in diameter. However, in order to reduce the cost of drilling these larger diameter wells and to increase recovery, the Bureau has developed jet pumps which have smaller diameters than centrifugal pumps of the same capacity. This allows both production and monitor wells to be drilled smaller. Bureau estimates indicate that the cost of drilling a 3-inch-diameter production well at in situ leaching operations would be about 35 percent less than the cost of a 6-inch well. Similarly, the cost of drilling a 2-inch-diameter monitor well would be about 26 percent less than the cost of a 4-inch well. Such significant savings in the cost of drilling these wells would effect a substantial reduction in total capital cost. Use of the new jet pumps can also increase the percentage of recovery because less costly wells allow closer well spacings, improving the distribution of the leach solution. How the System Works After the borehole is cased, the new small-diameter jet pump, along with piping and accessories, is installed and connected to a centrifugal pumping unit on the surface. High-pressure water from the surface pump is forced through a nozzle into the venturi of the jet type pump injector. This jet action lifts the leach and mineral-bearing solution to the surface.

Effects due to some metal cations, such as Ca2+, Mg2+,Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Al3+ etc., which are produced in the pulp when the complicated ore is dipped in the deioned water, on the flotation of chalcopyrite and galena with the isopropyl thionocarbamate as collector have been studied. It is found that chalcopyrite floatability is not influenced by these cations, and the cations can be di-vided into three types according to their effects on the purified galena?s floatability with the same conditions, as activator such as Cu+; as depressant such as Al3+, Fe3+, Fe2+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ , unaffective such as Mg2+ and Ca2+.

Micropiles are routinely used in the United States for foundation support and stabilization of slopes. In recent years, several retaining walls have been constructed using micropiles in an A-frame type configuration to support temporary and permanent excavations at sites with limited access and limited right-of-way. Typical A-frame micropile walls consist of a row of vertical micropiles at the face of the wall and a row of battered micropiles extending into the soil or rock to be retained. The two rows are then tied together with a pile cap such that the front pile acts primarily in bending and the back pile acts primarily in tension. Because of tight right-of-way constraints at a residential site in Aspen, Colorado, it was not possible to construct the wall using conventional shoring systems or micropiles in the typical A-frame configuration. Rather, the wall was designed such that the row of battered piles was installed at the wall face and the row of vertical piles was installed adjacent to the property line behind the wall. As a result of the reverse configuration of the A-frame wall, FLAC, a two-dimensional, finite difference software program, was used to model the soil-structure interaction. The final wall design consisted of both temporary and permanent retaining wall sections with maximum heights of 26 feet. Inclinometers were installed in several piles to monitor the behavior of the retaining walls during and after excavation. This paper presents an overview of the design method, a discussion of construction techniques, and a comparison between the FLAC model and the measured behavior of the wall in the field.

This study compares the use of an aminophosphonate chelating resin Purolite S950 and a sulphonic acid strong cation exchange resin Purolite C160H to recover nickel and cobalt from the synthetic bioleach solutions. Batch adsorption of metal citrate is performed as a function of metal citrate concentration (15~2000 mg/L) and solution pH (0.01M and 0.1M citric acid). The adsorption mechanism as inferred from the fit to Langmuir (LM), Freundlich (FM) and Redlich-Peterson (RP) models demonstrates that nickel citrate adsorbed onto C160H appears monolayer in comparison to that adsorbed onto S950 exists multilayer. In contrast, cobalt citrate adsorption onto both C160H and S950 agrees with the LM model. The results have shown that loading capacities of nickel and cobalt citrate onto C160H are 60 and 65 mg/g whereas those observed onto S950 are 16mg/g and 6 mg/g respectively. These are achieved in metal citrate prepared in 0.1 M citric acid. Resin regeneration is conducted in using 2 M nitric acid solution. The results show high efficiency of nickel and cobalt citrate elution from Purolite C160H. Findings from this study suggest Purolite C160H is a suitable adsorbent for recovering nickel and cobalt from bioleaching solutions.

The Bureau of Mines (Bureau) reviewed all available information regarding geologic and depositional processes contributing to potential coastal and offshore platinum group metal (PGM) placer deposits around the Goodnews Bay Mining District. The Bureau found that favorable environments for PGM along with gold and chromite enrichment include: (1) buried paleofluvial channels; (2) recent paleofluvial channels with little marine sediment overburden, (3) beach deposits, particularly in the upper swash zone and near back beach environments; (4) paleostrand lines; (5) shoal lag deposits inside the mouths of Goodnews and Chagvan bays; and (6) bases of far offshore tidal ridges which may represent reworked glacial deposits. Limited geologic and compositional (assay) data prevent determination of deposit size and grade of PGM mineralization for each deposit class. Future geologic sampling requirements for demonstration of identifiable offshore and beach PGM-bearing placers are discussed. Beach and offshore sampling programs conducted by the Bureau in 1986 will contribute additional information providing verification of specific deposit classes.

A computerized "Decision Support System" was used to evaluate an "Underground Platform Approach to Oil Recovery". Over a billion calculations were required to model the mine layouts; learning curves for shaft, tunnel, and well drilling scenarios; detailed cost, schedule, and resource data; complex oil production and material balance data; varying reservoir parameters; and complex oil pricing curves. Simplified "optimum" solutions were defined in terms of muck hoisting capacity, barrels of oil per day, and present worth. Complex "optimum" solutions were defined in terms of minimal exposure scenarios during development followed by shortest time to full production.

"In order to study the support effect of concrete in the surrounding rock of a metal mine, the concrete and surrounding rock were comparatively studied. Firstly, the general situation of the ultra-kilometer deep shaft in Xincheng, surrounding rock and geological conditions are introduced. Secondly, the experimental scheme of material mechanical properties of surrounding rock and shaft lining concrete based on same standard dimension and shape are examined, and the mechanical tests of rock and concrete based on different shapes and sizes are carried out. The study shows that the compressive strength value and elastic modulus of the rock cube are 1.28 times and 1.78 times that of the cylinder, and the Poisson's ratio is 0.77 times. The dimensional effect law of the concrete cube and cylinder test data is consistent with the rock law. However, the test results of the concrete are less discrete than the rock; the test also shows that the strength and elastic modulus of the concrete lining of the main shaft of the Xincheng are much smaller than the surrounding rock that is also used as the concrete aggregate, which indicates that the support of concrete lining in the surrounding rock shaft behaved weakly. Based on the development of the modern NATM rock support theory, it is suggested that the mechanical test standard of artificial support materials should be unified into the mechanics test standard of natural rock, which will help to improve the accuracy and practicality of scientific calculation of geotechnical engineering.INTRODUCTIONConcrete and rock mass are usually attributed to a class of materials called frictional materials or geotechnical materials, of these two kinds of materials, the first is man-maded and the second is natural. The attentive scholar can find that there are many differences in the test criteria for the mechanical properties of the two kinds of materials among different industries or departments, reflecting the differences in their sources, tradition, and the application thoery of material strength among them.There is a situation wordwide, that there are many testing standards of the same material mechanical parameters such as elastic modulus, compressive strength, etc. The cube with a side length of 150 mm is adopted as a common sample in the architecture department in China, while a cylinder with a diameter of 50 mm and a height of 100 mm is as a standard specimen in geotechnical department.Knowing that mechanical parameter values are strongly affected by the the size, shape of specimen and loading rate etc, that is to say the mechanical parameter values of the same material are completely different when obtained from different test with different standards. However, such a problem has been long neglected in geotechnical engineering."
