For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been studying crude petroleum from the producing fields of the United States. During the past year 10 crude-oil samples have been collected and analyzed from the producing fields of Pennsylvania and New York. This report gives the results of these analyses and for the purpose of comparison also analyses of samples of crude oils taken previously from some of these fields. This survey includes samples from normal producing properties as well as from properties using stimulative production methods such as water flooding and repressuring. The outstanding feature of the survey is that the crude oils from tine various fields throughout this general area are similar in character and uniform in quality although they were produced from different sands and by various methods. Samples from fields in Venango County, Pa., however, appear to have a lower gasoline content than the others. This report includes two analyses reprinted from Bureau of Mines Bulletin 291.4/

Enxofre e alumínio são dois elementos adicionados ao banho líquido, que têm papel importante na obtenção destas propriedades, mas que dificultam o processo de produção por lingotamento contínuo por favorecer a formação de partículas sólidas de alto ponto de fusão, que podem prejudicar a limpeza inclusionária e provocar a obstrução das válvulas de lingotamento. O objetivo do presente trabalho é analisar e classificar as inclusões de corridas do aço DIN 38MnSiVS6 em escala industrial e avaliar estes resultados em conjunto com os dados de processo de aciaria e com os resultados de simulação termodinâmica utilizando o software FactSage 6.4. Foi observado que as corridas apresentaram tanto sulfetos de cálcio quanto espinélios, mas as primeiras, associadas a uma fração líquida menor na escória, tiveram uma correlação mais perceptível com a má lingotabilidade.

Since coal -mining records have been kept , reports of all mining States show that each year the lives of many workers have been sacrificed in the production of coal , and Illinois has contributed its share , Illinois reports for the 50 years 1882 to 1932 , inclusive , show that 6,673 men were killed -- 6,121 underground , 340 in the shaft , and 212 on the surface . Of the fatalities underground , 3,116 were caused by falls of roof or sides , 1,111 by haulage , 630 by explosives , 577 by gas explosions , 139 by electricity, and 548 by other causes ; 166 of the shaft fatalities were caused by falling down the shaft , 143 by the cage , and 31 by other causes ; 108 of the surface fatalities were caused by railroad cars , 46 by machinery , and 58 by other causes . Most of those engaged in mining are still of the opinion that it is an extremely hazardous occupation and that it is practically impossible to operate without accidents ; however , students of safety in mining now believe that with the proper attention to accident prevention mining may be conducted with little , if any , greater accident rate than that of other supposedly hazardous industries . There is no mystery connected with accidents in mining ; reports show that the majority are due to two main causes , falls of roof and sides and haulage . Mining companies in Illinois , as well as in other States , have proved in the past few years that the hazards of mining , like those of other industries , can be controlled to a large extent and the mines operated with few if any accidents , provided a great enough effort is made by employer and worker . Although the past accident rate of Illinois may compare favorably with that of other mining States it is higher than it should be ; the fact that 6,673 men (an average of 133.46 per year) were killed in and around the mines of the State between 1882- and 1932 indicates that accident prevention should receive more consideration in the future than in the past .

Podiform chromitites are commonly found in the Moho transition zone to the mantle section of ophiolites, but have been very rarely found from the current ocean floor, even though some ophiolites are considered as a slice of oceanic lithosphere. One of the factors controlling podiform chromitite formation is the chemistry of host mantle peridotite; an intermediately refractory harzburgite is the optimum host for chromitites. This harzburgite represents the most common lithology of the oceanic lithosphere, where the peridotite-melt reaction, which is another condition, is possibly common there. The oceanic lithosphere mantle is thus a good host for podiform chromitites. The apparent rarity of documented oceanic chromitites is solely due to under-sampling of mantle materials from the fast-spreading ridge and the segment centre of slow-spreading ridges. Some ophiolitic chromitites formed not from genuine mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB) but from wet MORB due to the situation of typical ophiolites, which formed not at ordinary mid-ocean ridges but at supra-subduction zone spreading centres.CITATION:Arai, S, 2015. The paper presents a geotechnical simulation of the "Mavropigi" open pit mine (Western Macedonia Lignite Center, Greece), using the finite element method. The simulation was based on the initial planning of the pit using Mohr-Coulomb and Soil Hardening models. Results indicate high stability factors as well as the magnitude of the expected horizontal displacements and floor heaving. However, these deformations do not influence decisively the overall stability unless locally adverse tectonics are encountered. Results can be used in the ongoing update of mine planning and stability evaluation.

The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of recommended existing criteria of ground vibrations generated by blasting. It is shown that these criteria have limited liability because they were found for specific categories of structures. A new approach based on measurement of structure vibrations is suggested for assessment of damage in structures subjected to blasting vibrations. This approach provides the flexibility of implicitly considering a variety of soil-structure interaction and structure conditions. It is explained a new frequency-independent safe-level criterion of 51 mm/s (2 in/s) for the PPV of structural vibrations. Attention is brought to use seismographs properly calibrated for the required frequency range. Positive flexibility is demonstrated in assessment of structure and component of concern vibrations from blasting.

Hydraulic mining has been practiced in the United States since 1852 and many mineral commodities, such as gilsonite, phosphates, lead-zinc, silver ores and St. Peter Sandstone can be mined in this manner. In 1958, the U. S. Bureau of Mines initiated research into the mining of coal using these techniques.1-4 These early investigations were conducted in the 5000 psi pressure range. The large nozzle diameters used in this pressure range produced extremely high flow rates which created visibility problems at the coal face, and required removal of large amounts of water from the mining area. Besides, the production rates were not much better than with mechanical methods. This indicated that with higher pressures the water quantities might be reduced using the same or higher horsepowers but enhanced breakage. For this reason intensive investigation in material removal using fine water jets at extremely high pressures (50,000 psi to 100,000 psi) has been undertaken. This was not the entire reason for this contract from the Bureau of Mines, however. The contract objective is outlined later. IIT Research Institute has done pioneering work in high pressure jet development in the United States.5-8 Similar schemes have been investigated abroad. 9-13 Hydraulic mining of coal at relatively low pressures is successfully being done in the Soviet Union, Japan, Canada, and most recently, in Germany.

"Several plant studies have been conducted at the Zinifex Century Mine over the past 5 years. For each of the plant studies, surveys of the zinc primary circuit were conducted, characterisation measurements for each operating cell taken, and the floatability components of the ore mapped to develop a model of the circuit. The floatability components and machine parameters were then used to simulate changes in circuit configuration and operating conditions, enabling further potential improvements in circuit performance to be identified.This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the mine, as well as various circuit changes and developments implemented by site. The application of the methodology and the evolution of the standard procedure are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONBase metals were first discovered in the Lawn Hill region of Queensland’s North West in 1869 and the first mining lease in this area was pegged in 1887 over what is now known as the Silver King vein deposit. The area encompassing these veins, which includes the Century deposit, was proclaimed the Burketown Mining Field in 1899. Exploration titles were granted to CRA in 1987, precisely 100 years after the initial discovery at Silver King, hence the name ‘Century’.Century was commissioned by Pasminco in late 1999, with the mine becoming fully operational on 1 March 2000 and the official opening taking place in April. Pasminco had bought the Century and Dugald River deposits from CRA in 1997 for A$345 million, and invested some A$710 million in bringing Century into production. Today, Century is the world’s second-largest zinc mine in terms of its output, having reached full capacity in 2003.The Zinifex Century Limited (“ZCL”) lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 250 kms north-north west of Mt Isa in north-western Queensland. The deposit is a large flat-lying ore body covering an area of some 1.2 by 1.4 km, the 45 m-thick stratabound sulphide orebody is hosted within an 850 m-thick sequence of Proterozoic siltstone, shales and sandstone, amenable to open-cut mining methods. The mine has ramped up to full production delivering five and a half million tonnes of ore per annum, yielding approximately 900,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 90,000 tonnes of lead concentrate. Mine life is expected to be about 8 years"

The ventilation measurements by tracer gas method at Pongkor gold mine show that effective diffusion coefficient, E, at straight airways indicated a similar range of measured one by the laboratory experiments which can be estimated by Taylor equation. On the other hand, E of the curved airways in the mine was estimated as larger than that of the straight ones (1.5 to 32 times than that obtained by the Taylor equation and these have been compared with the data measured in Kushiro coal mine, Japan). The curved mine airways, with small curvature against airway radius and complex velocity profile, possibly give concentration ? time curves with long tailings, thus those airway conditions could make larger E. Laboratory experiments of gas diffusion by a pulsed injection of small amount gas, into straight and curved airways, have been conducted in order to investigate a range of E in mine airways. The plots of E against Reynolds number show that the present laboratory results of straight-long airways are almost close to one calculated by Taylor equation. On the other hand, the values of E measured at curved single-direction airways were smaller than that of the straight airways, which may be due to effects by secondary vortexes flow in the curved airways.

In Bangkok due to the prevailing condition of subsoil (existence of considerably weak stratum at top part) deep-seated large diameter bored piles of over 50 m depth with 0.8 -1.8m in diameter have been mainly used for heavy structures such as high rise buildings, elevated expressways, flyovers and more recently for underground subway stations of the first Bangkok MRTA system. As a part of pre-planned quality assurance regime and retrospective investigation, integrity of the piles are tested to obtain the information with regard to the potential deficiencies of the constructed piles which may have formed during pile construction process or may have been attributed by other activities after construction of the piles. An overview of three commonly used non-destructive tests such as sonic integrity, sonic logging and high strain dynamic load tests on deep-seated piles in Bangkok subsoil is presented in this paper. Advantages and limitations of each integrity test are discussed.

Some mines after passing through the prospecting stage and becoming sizable enterprises still adhere to the development program of the prospect, extending their workings without definite plans. In mining operations where definite structural conditions do not exist, a prearranged layout of mine development is not feasible; but where exploration and preliminary development have indicated the extent and probable limits within which the ore is expected, careful planning of development will result in a lowering of mining costs and a consequent increase is profits. A lack of definite plane for laying out mine workings is one of the contributory factors to unnecessarily high costs. Although this paper deals primarily with the influence of level spacing on mining costs, still other phases of mine development, such as the proper spacing of ore chutes and raises, can be analyzed on a cost basis in a similar manner, as shown herein. LEVEL SPACING The problem of establishing a new level or levels in order to exploit steeply dioping ore deposits and prospect the ground at depth recurs at intervals during the active life of mines. Driving levels is largely "dead work" and therefore costly. By the judicious selection of the proper level interval after balancing the opposing factors involved in the problem, a considerable saving in mining costs can be effected. Although much has been written in regard to the various methods employed in ore extraction, mining literature is still incomplete in regard to the factors-influencing level spacing at various mines. Level spacing involves procedures not lending themselves readily to description, and, moreover, it is a phase of mining operations that is apt to escape criticism, because only those in close contact with the operations are equipped with the necessary familiarity with the conditions to pass judgment.

THE {120}(001) texture has been reported in near 50 pct Ni-Fe alloys <0.004 in. thick1,2 and in copper 0.014 in. thick.3 This texture is one of two types of secondary recrystallization textures observed to replace a cube texture matrix and is desirable in Fe-Ni alloys because of its unique magnetic characteristics.1,2 However, the conditions for and mechanism of the {120}(001) formation are not well understood.3 During an investigation of the influence of alloying elements on the magnetic characteristics of 49 pct Ni-Fe alloys with a sheet thickness of 0.014 in., we have observed the growth of {120}(001) secondaries when strong deoxidizers such as aluminum and calcium were present. It is believed that this observation in unique and provides additional insight with regard to the mechanism for {120}(001) texture formation. Three alloys were prepared with electrolytic iron and nickel and contained a nominal 49 wt pct Ni. Alloy A was a straight binary Fe-Ni alloy, whereas intentional additions of 0.013 wt pct Ca to alloy B and of 0.59 wt pct A1 to alloy C were made. Ingots were forged at 1100 C, hot-rolled to 0.150 in. gage, pickled, and cold-rolled to 0.014 in. Ventilation-pressure surveys are required to determine the rates of pressure losses in various parts of mine-airway systems. These may be determined directly by differential pressure measurements or deduced from absolute pressure measurements, Despite the confusion caused by its inverted nonlinear scale, the altimeter has special application to pressure surveys in mines in which only small differences in elevation are involved, as is true for most of our large bituminous-coal mines in these, the judicious use of information obtained by pressure surveying can result in greatly improved working conditions as regards health and safety and, in many instances, can yield large financial returns. The main purposes of this report are to discuss methods of using altimeters for pressure surveys and to present the particular methods of making surveys and calculating the results of surveys used by the Mine Ventilation Section of the Bureau of Mines.

This paper addresses the impact of the variable speed drive on the particle size distribution in the product of a fully autogenous UG2 grinding circuit. It further discusses the impact of a varying particle size distribution in the product of the mill on the downstream classification and milling circuits. An industrial case study was used and data is presented to illustrate the techniques applied to identify the root cause of the shift in operational efficiency. The results achieved from both the investigation into the shift in plant efficiency and the sub-sequent corrective action taken illustrate that the root-cause methodology used in advance control can be effectively applied on production sites to both detect the shift and identify probable root-causes. The industrial example used confirms that the variable speed drive in a UG2 autogenous milling operation is a critical control parameter to ensure that the plant operates to design specifications.

In association with this, use of process optimization controllers enables to achieve specialised functionalities of the submerged arc furnaces like material management, lining management, electrode management, power management, overall production management etc.

"It is widely accepted that the type of grinding media has an impact on the grinding chemistry and subsequent flotation behaviour of the sulphide minerals being separated. There are countless laboratory investigations demonstrating that inert grinding media produces more oxidising pulp potentials, reduced levels of grinding media corrosion products and superior concentrate grades and valuable metal recoveries. However, taking these results to industrial scale has proven difficult.Work conducted at the Ernest Henry Mine, in north western Queensland, Australia, at laboratory and pilot plant scale clearly indicated that using a high chrome grinding media resulted in significant improvements in both copper and gold recoveries. However, advancing this work to plant trial represented considerable financial and technical risk to the mine.This paper provides details of the protocol developed and used during the high chrome grinding media plant trial. It describes the test regime employed to measure changes in pulp chemistry, and the statistical methodology utilised to interpret the results. The work also highlighted the need for close cooperation between the metallurgists on site and the researchers conducting the trial.To date, the trial has produced excellent results: indicating that the copper recovery has improved by about 2 percent. The successful application of high chrome grinding media to the Ernest Henry ore has increased metal value by $18.7 million USD per annum based on current spot price for copper.INTRODUCTIONTheoryThe application of electrochemically inert grinding media to mineral systems has been extensively studied (Table 1). A table of factors, for rapid, accurate calculation of the volume of pure helium in cylindrical steel containers, is presented. By use of the table the volume of helium in a container, at base conditions of 14.7 psia and 70° F, can be calculated from the observed pressure and temperature of the helium and the known internal volume of the container. The table covers a pressure range from a to 4,500 psia in 10 psi increments and a temperature range of 0° to 120° F in 2° increments. The calculation of volume requires a single multiplication, using a factor from the table and the known internal volume of the container. A discussion and evaluation of the accuracy obtainable and a derivation of the formula used (which takes into account compressibility of helium, thermal expansion of steel containers, and the stretch of steel due to internal pressure) are presented. An example showing how the table can be used is given also.
