The recent establishment of an official price of 64.64 cents per ounce for silver by the President's order of December 21, 1933, has provoked discussion as to the effects of this move on the various metal-mining industries. To assist those of the mineral industry who are interested in this problem, the Bureau of Mines presents the following analysis of basic statistical data concerning; the relation of the silver price to the value of copper ores mined in the United States. The term "copper ore" as used herein includes all ores in which copper is the most abundant base metal paid for. In 1928, this class of ore contributed 98 percent of the total copper output of the United States.

Preliminary examination of the north-central Kansas clay deposits was made by the junior author during March 1943. He was accompanied by Norman Plummer, ceramist of the State Geological Survey of Kansas. Three areas Nacre selected for further investigation. Detailed field investigation by the Bureau, consisting of hand auger drilling, trenching, anti. test pitting to obtain representative samples of the clays was carried on from April to June 1943. Field .work was under the direction of Edgar B. Butte and Richard L. Schumacher, former Bureau of Mines engineers. The samples taken were analyzed at the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Rolla, Mo. Factual data obtained from the field investigation and laboratory work are set forth in this report.

"A limiting factor for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) performance is the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode surface. Changes in the surface composition and structure on annealing at 800°C has been studied, since these can influence the ORR. Idealized single crystals of cathode materials La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSM) and La1-xSrxCoyFe1-yO3 (LSCF) were grown as heteroepitaxial thin films on lattice matched single crystal substrates. Changes upon heating the films to operating temperature and pressures were characterized using various synchrotron x-ray techniques. Total Reflection X-ray Fluorescence (TXRF) measurements, which probe compositional changes, were made at high temperature in real time. The LSM surfaces were found to develop manganese enrichment when heated. Highly strontium doped LSCF were found to develop strontium-rich surfaces. HArd X-ray PhotoElectron Spectroscopy (HAXPES) was used to investigate the electronic structure of the materials. Highly strontium doped LSCF precipitates a surface strontium phase that contains both oxide and carbonate contributions.IntroductionSolid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are chemical to electrical energy conversion devices that could potentially reshape how energy demands are fulfilled. SOFCs have a potential efficiency over 70%, fuel flexibility, low emissions, and low degradation over long time scales. Commonly, SOFCs are operated at high temperatures (above 800°C). At these temperatures expensive housing is needed to contain an operating stack as well as coatings to contain the oxidation of the metallic interconnects. Lowering the temperature of an operating device would allow for more conventional materials to be used, thus lowering overall cost. Understanding the reaction kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction at the surface of the cathode is vital to designing a system that will perform well at lower temperatures. A commercialization goal is to reduce operating temperatures without sacrificing performance.In order to exploit the advantages of SOFCs, an understanding is needed of the surface chemical states of cations on the surface of the cathode and how this relates to the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR):"

Critical minerals are nonfuel minerals, essential to the U.S. economy and national security, whose supply chain may be disrupted. Mine wastes are potential sources of critical minerals. The goal of this project is to estimate and characterize critical minerals endowment in three mining districts in New Mexico: Black Hawk (Grant County), Hillsboro (Sierra County), and Magdalena (Socorro County), and assess their acid-generating potential. The Black Hawk district is an arsenide five-element vein deposit (Ag, Ni, Co, As, U, Bi, and local minerals like Pb, Cu, Zn, W, and Sn). The Copper Flat mine in Hillsboro district is a copper porphyry deposit. The Kelly mine in Magdalena was first mined at 1878 and are carbonate-hosted Pb-Zn deposits. Mine waste rock piles and tailings are sampled using USGS Beta sampling procedure. Geochemistry results show that Black Hawk district mine wastes samples are elevated in Ag (>200 ppm), Co (290 ppm), Ni (2,130 ppm), and Zn (8,463 ppm). Copper Flat mine tailing is elevated in Bi (111 ppm), Cu (7,453 ppm), and Zn (2,360 ppm). Downhole profile plots in Copper Flat show the positive correlation between Cu, S and Te values. Magdalena samples are elevated in Cu (5,700 ppm), Zn (129,500 ppm), and Pb (58,100 ppm). Determination of acid-generating potential in these areas suggests that Black Hawk district mine wastes are non-acid-forming while high S present in some Copper Flat and Magdalena samples can potentially cause acid mine drainage.

In May of 1996, Twentymile Coal Co. began Longwall mining in the Foidel Creek Mine's East Mine District. These Longwall panels are some of the longest in the world (5.48 km/18,000 ft) with very difficult and challenging geometry. The conveyance system is 1,800 mm (72 in) wide, has a 4,500 mtph (5,000 stph) capacity and employs multiple tripper drives. The trippers include traditional powering designs as well as unique regeneration and braking designs. Several components were developed specifically for this application including a mobile tail brake. Control algorithms were carefully developed and tested via computer modeling. A world production record was achieved in the third month of operation and over 1 million tons were mined in June 1997.

R. B. T. KILIANI, New York, N. Y.-I wish to present some figures based upon actual observation extending over a few months time which seem to prove the author's conclusions. It is a comparison of two machines operating on the same ore, in the same plant, one taking the undersize of ½ -in. screen and the other taking the undersize of 8-mesh. Each of the machines was first operated as a pebble mill, with flint pebbles, in open circuit, then with metal pebbles in open circuit and, finally with metal pebbles in closed circuit. For the first case, the percentage of oversize on 48-mesh, Tyler screen, in the discharge, varied, in the mill taking ½ -in- feed, from 37.2 to 19.9 per cent. The second mill, taking the 8-mesh feed, had a variation in oversize on 48-mesh, from 36.8 per cent: to 0.5 per cent.; so it is seen there is considerable variation in these figures. I have computed the tons per kilowatt-day reduced through 48-mesh for each machine under each one of these conditions, giving 6 sets of figures. The first of these I called 1.0 and determined the ratio of the others to this.. In the snipe way, I figured the relative mechanical efficiency according to Kick's law, using' the figures given by Mr. Taggart in his paper, for ordinal numbers of the Tyler screens. I have also figured the efficiency in mesh-tons per horsepower according to Gates' method by plotting the screen analyses of feed and product and multiplying the area by a constant dependent on the scale used. The commercial efficiency of tons per kilowatt-day reduced through 48-mesh checks very closely with the efficiency by Rittinger's law, within 1 per cent. except in one case. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo adequar às características superficiais e mecânicas dos perfis ASTM A572 G60 para atender uma solicitação específica das indústrias de fabricação de torres de transmissão. A solicitação consiste em um ensaio do “achatamento”, que proporciona ao produto um tensionamento e uma deformação com um ângulo de aproximadamente 150º. A metodologia utilizada neste trabalho foi DMAIC (definir, medir, analisar, melhorar e controlar). Esta ferramenta é utilizada para melhoria de processos. Através desta ferramenta foi possível identificar as principais variáveis de processo de Aciaria e Laminação, o que possibilitou a determinação de um plano de ação direcionado às causas raízes. Com a implementação do plano de ação, obteve-se melhorias significativas na qualidade superficial e interna do material, como por exemplo a redução no nível inclusionário da classe 4 para a classe 3.

Having had occasion while in Europe during the past summer to visit some of the foreign mints and assay offices connected with the same, I thought a brief description of the general process of coining employed, and such items connected with assaying as were new, might prove interesting to the Institute. The principal foreign mints are: the Royal Mint, London; and the mints in Paris, Brussels, Utrecht, Berlin, Vienna, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Madrid, Milan, Rome, and Constantinople. My time only permitted my visiting a few of the principal and largest given in the list, and for a description of the remainder I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. James M. Napier, who in company with the deputy master, and chemist of the Royal Mint, made a complete inspection of all the European Mints in 1870.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a profitability analysis of producing crude oil by waterflooding. Included are the estimated costs of installation of water injection and producing equipment for waterfloods at 2,000 and 4,000 feet and the estimated annual operational expenses for each in west Texas. Using these cost estimates as a base for selecting a range of costs that are indicative of producing crude oil by waterflooding, a simulation technique was derived for determining the profitability under various conditions. Because of the large number of combinations of variables used in this study, a high-speed digital computer was utilized for the calculations. The variables include operational expenses, capitalized costs, price of the oil, annual production, and leasehold acquisition cost. The results obtained from the simulations are presented Fn the appendix. In addition, a nomographical approach was chosen for presentation of the profitability. Five nomographs are presented that can be used for fast estimation of the discounted cash flow (DCF) rate of return that might be expected from a prospective or active operation under various sets of assumed conditions.

Control of respirable dust produced by auger type continuous mining machines is normally attempted by water sprays from fixed nozzles mounted on the frame of the machine. In tests conducted under this contract, a 'wet auger' system was used, where the spray nozzles were mounted on the rotating auger itself. The tests were conducted at the Hunter mine of Smith and Stover Coal Company using a Jeffrey 1.00L auger miner. Operating the mining machine in the wet auger mode, it was found to produce 47 pct less respirable dust than when the fixed conventional sprays were used. On section dust levels were reduced too 3.5 mg/m3 which is equivalent to approximately 2.0 mg/m3 for a full shift portal to portal sample. The major difficulty that had to be overcome was the development of a simple reliable water transfer mechanism to get the water into the rotating augers. This was successfully achieved by the development of a water-through-the-shaft water system. This system can be retrofitted to existing machines and is available in kit form.

Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a soldabilidade a pontos entre os aços 22MnB5 e Dual Phase da classe de 800 MPa de limite de resistência (DP800), ambos com 1,8 mm de espessura. A intenção foi determinar os parâmetros adequados de soldagem para esse tipo de junta soldada, que vem sendo progressivamente utilizada na estrutura de veículos automotores, em virtude do uso crescente de peças fabricadas a partir do aço 22MnB5, submetido ao processo de estampagem a quente (hot stamping). Foram avaliadas as propriedades mecânicas através de ensaios estáticos de cisalhamento e de tração cruzada, em juntas soldadas produzidas a partir da variação do tempo de soldagem e da força aplicada pelos eletrodos. Percebeu-se que as juntas confeccionadas com o tempo de soldagem com múltiplos pulsos (9/2/9/2/9 ciclos) e a força de 5,0 kN obtiveram os melhores resultados em cisalhamento. Em contrapartida, os corpos de prova produzidos com a força de 6,5 kN atingiram os maiores valores em tração cruzada. Independentemente dos parâmetros aplicados, todas as condições avaliadas permitiram alcançar o valor mínimo de carga de ruptura necessária para garantir a qualidade de uma junta soldada a ponto entre os aços avaliados.

EVERY man connected with the mining industry should take a significant pride in the fact that he belongs to an industry and to a profession that, from the beginning, has been constructive. The miner digs his ore and he gives the metal to art, to industry, and to commerce. The nature of our business is destructive only in that we deal with a wasting asset. That should be a source of great pride to those who belong to the profession. But unfortunately, the product of our mines, our smelters, and our re- fineries does not always go to constructive purposes. There are times when, in the administration of the affairs of men, our product chiefly goes to purposes which are destructive. When we look upon the panorama of horror that is being enacted throughout the world today, we wonder whether any effort toward the development of civilization and culture and education and well-being has been worthwhile. We are appalled to see the things that have been developed, through the application of science, toward progress and efficiency, now used for the catastrophic destruction of those things which are the most valuable that man has built. We must find hope that this is but an episodic thing; that it must, in the infinite wisdom of the Almighty, usher in a period of peace and progress, of civilization and development that will make man's existence upon earth worthwhile.

An expert system advisor consultant to assist a coal mine section foreman is described in this report. The system is designed for an underground continuous miner section that is being specifically used for longwall development. The system provides three methods of operation that include normal operational mode for use underground, a training mode for use in training section foremen under controlled classroom conditions, and a demonstration mode that is free running. The Face Decision Support System or FDSS, is designed to interface with section environmental monitoring equipment and section production monitoring equipment that may appear in the future. This provides automated reprioritzation of the section foreman's job list from the system. The system 1S written in LASER which is written in C and is operated under the UNIX operating system. The objective of the entire FOSS system is to ensure that no job or piece of information important to safety or to production is forgotten because of the immediate problems confronting the section foreman.

As new legislation drives to lower SO2 emissions from metallurgical plants, plant managers face the challenge of keeping their costs under control. The Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System has been broadly adopted in the non-ferrous industry as a cost effective solution for smelter operators to meet the new SO2 emissions targets. The Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System is an amine-based regenerable process that selectively absorbs SO2 from a variety of gases, including dilute smelter gases, such as furnace and converter gases. The system produces a pure, water-saturated SO2 byproduct stream, which can then be directed to the front end of a sulfuric acid plant for conversion to sulfuric acid. When deployed in a smelter complex, the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System may also be used to process acid plant tail gas, allowing single absorption sulfuric acid plants to achieve emissions an order of magnitude lower than that of a double absorption acid plant with a lower capital investment. Depending on inlet gas temperature SO2 emissions in the treated gas can be controlled to as low as 55 mg/Nm3. This paper will describe some of the applications where customers have or are planning to use the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System and what as well as which features and cost advantages for the treatment of smelter gases were key to the technology choice.

FABRICATION of semiconductor devices.requires the formation of electrical contacts, often involving the use of lead, tin, and lead-tin solders. In several recent instances when germanium had been bonded to nickel with lead, a new metallic phase appeared, unattached to either germanium or nickel, but rather suspended as a continuous foil wholly contained within the lead matrix. Since such metallic structures do not form in nickel-lead or lead-germanium systems under identical conditions, a brief study was made of the characteristics and possible formation mechanisms of this material. "Since the late 1990s, increased prevalence of severe lung disease among US coal miners has been observed, particularly in central Appalachia where thin-seam mining is prevalent. While respirable silica exposures have been implicated in many cases, the available dust monitoring data from mines shows no explanatory trends. One possible factor could be differences in the relative toxicity of silica particles based on their surface condition. Previous research has indicated that particles with occluded surfaces (e.g., by a thin layer of clay) may be less toxic than those with non-occluded surfaces. However, this dust characteristic has not been investigated before now in central Appalachian mines. In the present study, 18 respirable dust samples from seven central Appalachian mines and two northern Appalachian mines were analyzed to assess the relative occurrence of surface-occluded silica. Results showed that the dust from central Appalachian mines actually had higher fractions of occluded silica, which may be due to extraction of large amounts of rock strata along with the coal. However, the central Appalachian mines also more silica particles overall (i.e., occluded + non-occluded) in terms of total number percentage of respirable particles.INTRODUCTIONResurgence of occupational lung disease among US coal miners, especially in the central Appalachian region, has been observed since the late 1990’s (Gibson, 2016; Zosky et al., 2016; Suarthana et al., 2011; Gamble et al., 2011; Antao et al., 2005; Attfield & Sexias, 1995). In addition to increased prevalence of simple Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP, or “black lung”), the prevalence of severe and rapidly progressive disease has risen dramatically (Almberg et al., 2018; Blackley et al., 2018a, 2018b, 2016, 2014; Graber et al., 2017; Cohen et al., 2016). While exposures to respirable silica have long been known to cause or play a role in diseases such as silicosis or progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), which is conventionally considered as the most advanced form of CWP, it is unclear whether silica is the only culprit in the recent outbreak of severe disease. Indeed, as disease rates have risen, both total respirable dust and silica concentrations generally appear to have declined since the late 1980s, based on regulatory monitoring data in the most affected mining districts (i.e., MSHA coal Districts 4, 5 and 12, which cover central WV, eastern KY and southwestern VA, and southern WV, respectively) (Figure 1). Of course, the latency of disease can vary and may be or more 10 years, but many of the most recent cases are likely to have resulted from exposures that occurred since the late 1980s."

Overlying the sulfide mineralization at Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes Mine is an oxidized zone up to one hundred meters in thickness. The principal copper minerals in this zone are chryso-colla, tenorite, cuprite, native copper and copper-manganese-iron wad. This ox¬idized zone also contains minor amounts of uranium ranging in concentration from 0.002 to 0.010 percent. Since pit development through 1980, some 38 million tonnes of oxide ore with copper contents greater than 0.6 percent have been brought to the surface. Copper in the oxide ore is extracted at Twin Buttes in, an agitated sulfuric acid leach plant followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning producing 90 tonnes per day of copper cathode. During leaching of the oxide ores small amounts of uranium are solubilized along with the copper values. This is not limited to Twin Buttes as most acidic copper bearing leach solutions throughout the southwestern United States contain small amounts of uranium.1

The Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) specification B105.1 “Welded Steel Conveyor Pulleys” adequately defines standard pulleys for most aggregate material handling applications. However, many aggregate applications demand pulleys of higher capacity and reliability than that offered by CEMA pulleys. This paper examines the CEMA Pulley Standard and pulley specifications for aggregate applications requiring greater capacity and reliability than the CEMA Pulley Standard. Higher reliability increases the uptime and has a lower total cost of ownership.
