HAVING had occasion while in Europe during the past summer to visit some of the foreign mints and assay offices connected with the same, I thought a brief description of the general process of coining employed, and such items connected with assaying as were new, might prove interesting to the Institute. The principal foreign mints are: the Royal Mint, London; and the mints in Paris, Brussels, Utrecht, Berlin, Vienna, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Madrid, Milan, Rome, and Constantinople. My time only permitted my visiting a few of the principal and largest given in the list, and for a description of the remainder I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. James M. Napier, who in company with the deputy master, and chemist of the Royal Mint, made a complete inspection of all the European Mints in 1870.

The explosive-anchored rockbolt was field tested in six mines where rock conditions varied from incompetent shale or mudstone through fairly soft sand-stone to firm sandy shales. The purpose of the testing was to document, under a wide variety of conditions and in comparison to other rockbolt anchors, the quality of the anchorage produced by the explosive-anchored bolt. In addition, the length, strength, and design of the explosive charge necessary to produce positive anchorage up to the yield strength of the weakest component of the bolt were determined. A l4-inch length beaded explosive charge was found to be suitable, in general, in relatively weak strata, and the length can be reduced in more competent strata. Of the 127 explosive?-anchored bolts tested, 118 bolts produced an evaluated anchorage in excess of 17,000 pounds. Only 4 of 43 expansion-shell bolts and 4 of 14 wedge bolts produced anchorage this good. In preliminary tests, properly coupled explosive-anchored bolts did not ignite an explosive gas mixture. Some minor phases included in the investigation were as follows: (1) effect of explosive-anchored rockbolt on surrounding rock; (2) effect of time on anchored bolts based on torque tests; (3) effect of submersion in water on rockbolt anchorage; (4) pull tests to higher loads; and (5) ignition tests.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The central Nanling region in South China experienced multistage granite intrusive events and corresponding metallogenic processes during the Early Yanshanian period (190–140 Ma). In this study, a wide variety of published data on age determination, petrological characteristics, major and trace elements compositions, whole rock Sr–Nd contents and zircon Hf isotopic composition of the representative granite composites were systematically collected to estimate their cooling-uplift rates, granite evolution processes and mineral deposit formation. These granites have been classified into two groups based on their age and geochemical variations: Group 1 (180–165 Ma) and Group 2 (165–150 Ma). Major and trace element geochemistry suggests that Group 2 experienced more intense magmatic evolution and differentiation than Group 1. In addition, Group 1 granitoids are classified as A1-type alkaline rocks with faster cooling and uplift rates, whereas Group 2 granites are considered as A2-type aluminous rocks with slower cooling and ascent rates. Furthermore, the Group 1 granitoids have younger Nd and Hf two-stage model ages but higher eNd(t) and eHf(t) values, indicating influence from crust–mantle interaction. In contrast, the Group 2 granites show different values, suggesting stronger upper crustal contamination or assimilation. The slowly cooled and ascended Group 2 granites experienced much heavier crustal contamination (or assimilation) and crystal fractionation, contributing to the large W–Sn mineralisation in the central Nanling region. The Green Mountain Copper Prospect is an unusual stratiform base metal occurrence located in the California Foothills Copper-Zinc Belt. Mined for rich secondary oxide-carbonate ores since 1863, the first serious exploration of the primary ores was in the 1970's. Unlike typical volcanogenic deposits of the district, stratigraphy consists of greywackes overlain (?) or intruded by an intermediate to felsic volcanic unit. Shales and siltstones overlie the volcanic unit. Massive pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur at the top of the volcanic unit. Later intrusion and deformation metamorphosed the sequence and created a SW plunging anticline. Characteristic magnetic and electrical geophysical signatures are present and reviewed.

A Votorantim Metais processa pós de aciaria elétrica (PAE) e outros resíduos contendo zinco em sua unidade de Juiz de Fora, por meio do processo Waelz. Devido ao alto teor de óxido de cálcio (CaO) nos resíduos processados, a etapa de desalogenação apresenta baixo rendimento de remoção de fluoretos -aproximadamente 20%. O processo de lixiviação sob pressão foi testado para o tratamento de amostras de óxido Waelz (O.W.) da Votorantim Metais com o objetivo de lixiviar os cloretos e fluoretos contidos nesse material. Os parâmetros avaliados foram: temperatura de lixiviação (120°C a 180°C) e razão de carbonato de sódio (Na2CO3) adicionado (100kg/t a 200kg/t óxido Waelz), em um reator piloto com capacidade de 10L. A técnica mostrou-se eficiente para lixiviação de cloretos, com remoção acima de 94,2%. Os resultados para fluoretos obtidos apresentaram variação entre 63,0% e 96,2% de rendimento de lixiviação e uma forte correlação dos resultados com a temperatura. Esse processo mostrou-se eficiente em escala de bancada, apresentando rendimento de extração superior a 90% para a remoção de halogênios em temperaturas acima de 150°C e adição de Na2CO3 de 140 kg/t O.W.

The Bureau of Mines is studying possible modifications in conventional ore-processing methods that will confine and permit controlled disposal of radioactive liquid wastes. Stream and ground water pollution from radio-active nuclides, principally radium 226 and thorium 230, in liquid wastes from uranium mills can be minimized by reusing the waste solution within the mill. Such reuse of waste solution in an acid leach-resin-in-pulp flowsheet was investigated in the laboratory. The process consists of acid leaching for dissolution of the uranium, sand-slime separation and countercurrent decantation washing for recovery of a pregnant slime slurry, and the use of ion-exchange resin for recovery of uranium from the slurry. Reuse of clarified barren effluent for washing in the simulated mill circuit was carried through 55 cycles. Dissolution of uranium from the ore averaged 97.5 percent. Washing efficiency of 99.9 percent was attained when using 4.35 volume tons4 of combined barren effluent and makeup water per ton of ore. Absorption of uranium from the pregnant slime slurry by an ion-exchange resin averaged over 99.9 percent.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fifth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in Volume I. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion of that area.

When producing high grade mattes in smelter plants, copper losses in the slag are inevitable. Hence, the recovery of copper from slag has been the focus of many research projects, copper flotation being a widely used process. In the Khatoonabad converter, 200 t/d of slag are presently produced with a grade of 2.3% Cu. Assuming a 85% recovery by flotation, about 3.9 t/d copper could be produced, which is of prime importance economically. In the present work, a sample of this slag was crushed and ground in the laboratory to liberate the copper-bearing minerals. Following mineralogical studies, optimum laboratory flotation parameters were obtained, resulting in 90.27 % recovery and 9.42% of copper grade for the rougher stage. At pilot scale, a pulp of 28% solids was floated at ph 10.5 using 40 git of Z6, 25 git of R407 and 20 git of MIBC and A65. A recovery of 83.52% was obtained for a concentrate grade of 28.36% Cu. In the rougher cells, the feed consisted of particles 94% finer than 74 microns whereas in the cleaning stage, particles were 95% finer than 44 microns. Based on the obtained results, the Sarcheshmeh Khatoonabad converter slag is presently being fed to the Chargonbad flotation plant, where a concentrate of 32% copper at 86% recovery is being produced.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 419 natural gas samples from 22 States collected during calendar year 1964 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863/ and 576.4/ Six previous publications have been made to present the results of 6,293 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines, Helium Activity, prior to 1964. Two of the most critical concerns a blaster faces today are airblast and flyrock. Airblast, sometimes called noise or overpressure, can cause damage to neighboring structures, especially windows. It also is the cause for many vibration complaints. The human sense of hearing is often more acute to identifying source than the sense of touch. When a blast occurs, the airblast is what identifies the event. The vibration that may be felt is then associated with the airblast. Vibrations of greater magnitude, such as passing trucks or construction work on the house, go unnoticed because their sounds are familiar or expected. Flyrock is the number one killer and cause of damage. Elasting laws provide limits for these two concerns. Failure to comply may result in fines, closing of the operation, and even prison. Airblast and flyrock originate from two distinct areas, the open face and the bench surface. Each of these areas is addressed in the detailed proven procedures that follow, and if used by the blaster in conjunction with his own blasting knowledge, a sound blasting plan can be developed to minimize the occurrence of airblast and flyrock.

Regional characteristics in the coal resource base have resulted in application of different mining methods across Canada. Longwall methods predominate in eastern Canada, whereas open pit, hydraulic and room-and-pillar methods are utilized in the west. Both provincial and federal agencies have regulatory responsibilities and both also share in the development of R&D programs. This paper outlines the scale and scope of the various agencies involved with health and safety R&D in our expanding coal mining industry. Specific R&D activities in ventilation, dust control, explosion hazards, tunnel boring, strata control and truck braking, which form part of the national program, are outlined.

[Methods of distilling topped crude oils and distillates under vacuum, accompanied by good fractionation, have taken a place of major importance in the refining industry. In the refining of petroleum products it is generally desirable to produce a distillate of good quality, and this objective is attained by fractionation of a high degree. The laboratory and commercial practice have proved chat by varying the amount of fractionation the quality of the distillate car be changed, and refiners are cognizant of the advantages of good fractionation. Distillation-under high vacuum, however, is a relatively new practice in petroleum refining, and only during the last few years has there boon an indication that that this method ray become a general practice in the industry. Vacuum distillation offers many advantages over older methods of distilling petroleum products. Vacuum combined with steam distillation, for example, is replacing straight-stream distillation because the quality of the products of vacuum and, steam distillation surpasses that of those produced by straight-steam distillation. Although the injection of varying amounts of steam in a vacuum unit is common practice, the amount of steam used is becoming less as the vacuum within the unit is increased. The work in this paper describes the theory, development and analysis of a computer model simulating a mine operation moving material using concurrent decline ramp truck haulage and skipping practices. This simulation was designed specifically to assess the performance of the truck haulage component and to expand on the scope and capabilities of traditional TKM fleet calculations. Haulage fleet simulation results were similar to TKM calculations for the lower to moderate production rate cases. However, comparisons of ramp-up and high production rate scenarios indicated that the simulation model was significantly more sensitive to operating practices and factors not accounted for by calculations derived when using a single TKM figure. Given the proper calibration of inputs and logic, the simulation model was additionally capable of providing information associated with general mine operations efficiency. Further benefits of the simulation model over a TKM approach included logistical assessments such as production schedule feasibility, productivity trade-off quantifications for proposed operating practices, and the validation of mine resource utilization scheduling. The simulation model was able to expand on traditional methods to approach planning and logistics by considering factors such as truck queuing, real-time traffic interactions, random events, and competition for resources on mine productivity.

"Les avantages de l'électricitéLe thème de la réunion 1982 de l'ICM District No. 2: "" Le défi des années 80 pour l'industrie minière de la Côte-Nord"" exprime trè s bien la réalité . En effet, la récession économique qui touche présentement tout le monde industrialisé, frappe de façon particulièrement sévère le marché du fer et de l'acier. Il est donc primordial pour les industries minières de la CôteNord de minimiser leurs coûts de production. Comme on sait, une bonne part des coûts de production est directement reliée à la consommation d'énergie.Si on retourne en arrière de quelques années, les prix des produits pétroliers étaient beaucoup moins élevé s que maintenant . Par exemple: A Philadelphie, en janvier 1930, le prix de l'huile no. 6 (bunker C) était de 1.22$ le baril. En 1940, le prix mondial du pétrole brut se situait aux environs de 1.80$ le baril et augmentait très lentement jusqu'en 1973. A la mi-octobre 1973, l'organisation des pays exportateurs de pétrole (O.P.E.P.) surprend le reste du monde en annonçant que le prix du brut grimpe à S.12$ le baril. .. on connaît la suite.On sait qu'au point de vue énergétique, le nord du Québec est l'une des régions les plus avantagées au monde. Malgré le fait que notre climat soit plutôt défavorable, nous sommes assurés d'une alimentation électrique à toute fin pratique éternelle, contrairement aux autres régions du globe. En effet, l' hydro-électricité ne représente que 2.S070 de toute l'électricité produite dans le monde.Une bonne partie de l'énergie consommée dans les industries minières de la Côte-Nord est utilisée pour produire la vapeur. Or, il y a plusieurs avantages à produire de la vapeur à partir de l'électricité:1. Le prix d'achat d'une chaudière électrique peut être moins de la moitié de celui d'une chaudière à carburant fo ssile.2. Le prix de l'électricité est plus bas que celu i des autres sources d'énergie disponibles dans notre région.3. Hydro-Québec offre un programme spéci al de subventions et un prix garanti de l'électricité, inférieur de 10070 à celui de tout autre combustible (1982).4. Souvent il est possible d'utiliser l'énergie hors pointe à un coût minime.S. L'espace requis pour un chaudière électrique est beaucoup moindre. Par exemple: une chaudière d'une capacité de 120000 Ibs/hre ne demande que SO pi? de plancher, c'est-à-dire un cercle de 8 pieds de diamètre comparativement à environ 600 à 700 pi2 pour une chaudière au ma zout.6. Aucun espace n'est requis pour l'entreposage du carburant.7. Aucun espace n'est requis pour la cheminée.8. Il n' y a que très peu de pièce s mécaniques, donc ces chaudières demandent très peu d 'entretien .9. Les chaudières électriques ne génèrent aucune pollution, donc on n'a pas besoin d'équipement coûteux de contrôle de la pollution.10. Ces chaudières sont extrêmement rapides. En effet, on peut passer de zéro à la production maximum en moins d'une heure si la chaudière est froide et en quelques secondes seulement si la chaudière est à sa température d'opération.11. L'efficacité de ces appareils est au moins de 9S% par rapport à 80-8S% pour les chaudières au ma zout. De plus, cette efficacité demeure la même quel que soit le niveau de production de la chaudière. Il faut faire attention ici: les manufacturiers proposent des rendements de 99% et plus, mais ceci ne tient compte que des pertes de chaleur à travers l'enveloppe, et de l'énergie nécessaire au fonctionnement de la pompe de circulation. Il faut ajouter à cela l'énergie perdue à cause de la vidange qui varie selon le type de chaudière et selon la qualité de l'eau d'alimentation.12. Ajoutons simplement que ces appareils sont très facile à opérer du fait qu'il n'y a aucun système complexe à manipuler.Cependant, il y a un inconvénient non négligeable à utiliser l'électricité comme source d'énergie: comme on ne peut pas emmagasiner l'énergie électrique, nous sommes à la merci du fournisseur."

[Several new oilfields have been developed in northwestern Wyoming during the past 10 years, production is obtained from discontinuous, permeable sands enclosed within impermeable shales. The energy to drive the oil to producing wells in supplied by gas in solution in the oil. Most of the wells had high-initial potentials, but rates of oil production have steadily declined, indicating a dissipation of the driving energy and the possibility that large volumes of oil will remain unrecovered in the reservoirs. The studies reported in this paper were undertaken to develop laboratory data of the type most likely to be needed by persons studying the susceptibility of the Newcastle sand reservoir to secondary-recovery methods.]

The safety record of the metal mining and milling industries in 1965 is reviewed by the Bureau of Mines. The overall injury-frequency rate of 23.77 per million man-hours was 5 percent lower than in 1964 and was the lowest annual rate in a statistical history beginning with 1931. The injury-severity rate of 3,521 days lost per million man-hours in 1965 represented a 5-percent improvement over 1964. However, the total of 3,825 disabling work injuries comprised 61 fatal and 3,764 nonfatal injuries, one and 92 more, respectively, than in 1964. At primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants, the injury-frequency rate of 8.97 per million man-hours in 1965 was 13 percent lower, but the severity rate percent higher than in 1964. these plants in 1965, 4 more of 1,173 days lost per million man-hours was 17 There were 12 fatal and 971 nonfatal injuries at and 28 fewer, respectively, than in 1964.

The anchorage capacity of four types of bolting systems was investigated in two mines with thick coal roofs. In conjunction with the in-mine tests, a simple axisymmetric finite element computer program was developed. Both the field and computer results indicated that thick coal roofs can be effectively supported entirely by the coal member.

Process performance can be significantly influenced by proper design of hydrometallurgical reactors. Optimal reactor configuration is case specific and depends on process requirements such as reaction rate limiting factor and particle size distribution. Choice of materials and manufacturing methods also play important roles in highly corrosive and abrasive environment often involved in hydrometallurgical industry. In this paper performance of different reactor designs has been compared in some typical hydrometallurgical applications. Results show that significant improvement in energy consumption, gas utilization efficiency and equipment lifetime can be achieved with process specific reactor design.
