Bendigo Mining Limited has established a modern underground gold mine and processing plant at Bendigo in central Victoria. The Bendigo goldfield produced around 22 000 000 oz of gold between 1851 and 1954. Approximately 4 000 000 oz were sourced from surface alluvial workings with the remaining 18 000 000 oz won from underground quartz reefs. The modern mine is accessed via the Swan Decline, which commences at the Kangaroo Flat site on the southern outskirts of Bendigo and progresses in a north easterly direction between the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines, reaching a depth of almost 1000 m below the City of Bendigo. Development of this decline commenced in 1998. Since that time 20 km of underground development has been completed. Exploration drilling, on-reef development and bulk sampling carried out between 1999 and 2005 resulted in the estimation of a Probable Ore Reserve of 700 000 tonnes at 9.0 g/t gold for 207 000 oz of gold. These Ore Reserves were contained within four reefs located on the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines. Reef mining commenced in late 2005 from the Shywolup and Greater Garrard reefs. Material mined was stockpiled on the surface in preparation for commissioning of the process plant which commenced in mid 2006. Mining and processing were carried out between August 2006 and May 2007 during which time 176 000 tonnes were processed at an average grade of 5.4 g/t gold to produce 26 735 oz of gold. Plant feed was sourced from four reefs. This paper discusses some of the issues which were encountered with the definition and mining of these geologically variable and nuggetty reefs. This paper covers exploration techniques, grade estimation, mine geological control, mining methods, geotechnical issues and reconciliations. It will also discuss some of the lessons learnt and how these will be applied to future Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation, as well as underground operations.

"To explore blast furnace slag as a secondary resource for rare earth elements (REEs), blast furnace slag containing lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), erbium (Er) and neodymium (Nd) in concentrations of 17, 16, 4 and 44 ppm, respectively, was processed with sulfuric acid while optimizing the parameters of acid concentration, temperature and pulp density. The experiments showed that recovery rates of 92, 36, 35 and 52 percent for La, Ce, Nd and Er, respectively, were achieved at 1 to 5 weight/volume (w/v) percent pulp density using particles smaller than 250 µm and treating with 1 M sulfuric acid for one hour at room temperature. Raising the temperature to 95 °C promoted the dissolutions of Ce and Nd to 89 and 84 percent, respectively, for the same 1 M acid concentration and one-hour duration at 5 w/v percent pulp density. Cyanex 923 was preferred over Cyanex 301 for the purification of REEs from leach liquor. In another route, the leach liquor was subjected to precipitation with 0.5 to 1 M oxalic acid, resulting in a product with 4 to 5 percent concentration of REEs.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) are important materials in numerous high-technology applications, but they have high supply risk, giving rise to the study of new sources. The recycling of REEs has been well researched, especially on a small scale, but has not been widely implemented. Less than 1 percent of REEs were recycled in 2011 (Binnemans et al., 2013). REEs occur in a large number of minerals in oxidic compounds, such as oxides, carbonates, phosphates and silicates, and are present as mixtures at 10 to 300 mg/kg concentrations in many rock formations, such as basalts, granites, gneisses, shales and silicate rocks. The most abundant REE in the Earth’s crust is cerium (Ce), at a concentration of 20 to 70 mg/kg, followed by neodymium (Nd) and lanthanum (La), with heavier REEs being less abundant (Binnemans et al., 2013). Illinois produced 5 per cent more crude oil in 1934 than in 1933, because there was less curtailment, and. the value of the year's production at the wells was 35 per cent more than that of the previous year. The average price of Illinois crude oil in 1934 was $1.13 as compared with $0.87 in 1933, an increase of 30 per cent. The quotas of allowable production for Illinois during 1934, as authorized by Oil Administrator Harold L. Ickes, were as follows: January, February, March, 12,000 bbl. per day; April, May, 12,500; June, July, 12,600; August, 12,500; September, October, November, 12,000; December, 11,700. No other restrictions on production were in effect during the year until Oct. 11, when it was found necessary to prorate the fields to 75 per cent, a curtailment of 25 per cent below the quota fixed by the Federal Administrator. On Dec. 1 the curtailment was reduced to 18 per cent and on Dec. 18, to 15 per cent. Of the 26 wells drilled, 10 were oil producers, 8 were in proved fields and 2 were in a new pool in Wabash County, l½ miles south of the nearest production, one was a small gas well on the Stubblefield anticline in Bond County, one was an input well for repressuring in the Colmar-Plymouth field, McDonough County, and 14 were dry holes, mostly scattered wildcat tests.

The history, geology, ore deposits and current mining operations of the Huitzuco district have been described by C. W. Vaupelll and the current mill operations by David Segura.2 This paper completes the story of Huitzuco with a description of the reduction of the flotation concentrates. The predominant ore mineral in the Huitzuco deposit is livingstonite, a rare, mercury-antimony sulphide (HgS.2Sb2S3). Other associated minerals include cinnabar, stibnite and elemental sulphur. The gangue is largely limestone and gypsum. Former operators mined a selected grade of ore, from which the mercury was recovered by an expensive, inefficient operation. A considerable tonnage of rejects and fills, carrying mercury and antimony, was left in the mine. In order to recover both mercury and antimony from these fills and also from newly developed ore, a combination method has been developed, by means of which the livingstonite is concentrated by flotation and the flotation concentrates subsequently reduced to metallic mercury and antimony. An essential part of the flotation treatment, as developed by Segura, is the use of copper sulphate as an activating agent. A typical analysis of concentrates now being produced at the property is as follows: Hg, 7.73 per cent; Sb, 26.40; Fe, 1.20; S, 29.68; CaO, 11.50; MgO, 7.25; SiOz, 1.63; A1203, 0.65. PRocess foR Treatment op Concentrates In the development of a process for treatment of these concentrates, three different methods were investigated: (1) roasting in a Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine with an excess of air; (2) separation of mercury and antimony by distillation in a reducing atmosphere; (3) a third method, which ultimately developed into the present process. The third method involved a slow calcination at a closely regulated temperature with a limited admission of air, which separated the mercury and antimony, the raeroury passing out of the kiln with the furnace gases and the antimony remaining in the calcine or "sinter."

"This paper discusses the experience of Noranda Mines Limited, Matagami Division, with the vertical crater retreat (VCR) method in the mining of narrow-vein stopes. Although limited to only one stope, the viability of this method at the Radiore No.2 Mine has proven that further use of VCR in narrow-vein mining will be made.IntroductionThe Radiore No.2 property is located east of the Bell River in the southeast quadrant of Isle-Dieu Township, approximately 4.5 km east of the town of Matagami. The new James Bay Highway is 2.5 km north of the property and access to the mine is by a 2.5-km logging road.The property was staked by Radiore Uranium Mines in March 1961 and the sulphide body was first indicated by an E.M. survey. Diamond drilling commenced in the fall of 1961 and was completed by the end of 1962. As per an agreement in 1970, the claims were sold and assigned to Orchan Mines Limited. Subsequently, the property was transferred to Bell Allard Mines Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Orchan Mines. Early in 1979, Noranda Mines Limited acquired the property and it is now part of Noranda's Matagami Division.Geology and MineralizationThe deposit is in a band of volcanic rocks north of the Bell River complex. The lens of massive sulphides dips almost vertically and strikes almost east-west. The north contact is essentially sharp against andesite material; the south contact is less well defined, as the massive sulphides tend to grade into more disseminated material.The orebody varies from 5 to 20 feet in width, by 350 feet long and 200 feet in height. The overburden is composed of sand, gravel and clay, varying from 0 to 26 feet in depth. The ore reserves were 153,340 tons grading 1.97% copper and 1.01% zinc including 10% of dilution at zero grade."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a hydrologic monitoring system for in situ leaching operations. This system records and displays flow and pressure information from sensors located in leachant injection and recovery wells. Continuous monitoring of hydrologic conditions is important during leaching operations because hydrologic factors such as aquifer permeability, solution injection rates, injection pressure, and solution recovery rates interact and change over time. This hydrologic monitoring system has been tested in an underground setting at the Cyprus Casa Grande copper mine. The system consists of hardware and computer software components and includes two Bureau-developed software applications. This publication describes the implementation of the hydrologic monitoring system and the software developed at the Bureau in support of in situ leaching research.

Introduction of radioactive elements into ore samples and/or pregnant liquors and radiometric tracing thereof have greatly improved control of fusion and extraction studies on beryllium ores and products. Extractive metallurgical research on beryllium, normally guided by the usual laborious analytical methods, is both costly and slow. Recognition of this problem by the Bureau of Mines led to the development and application of radioisotope tracer techniques" as a substitute for chemical analysis at the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center, The result was that much faster progress at significantly lower cost was achieved. This report discusses the problems encountered and resolved in using radioactive tracers and radiometric methods, defines the conditions and techniques for their effective use, and delineates the limitations and flexibility inherent in applying such methods in laboratory-scale beryllium research.

Mortar is a widely used building material and has its application in buildings in extremely vulnerable environments and susceptible to degradation, such as facades. The objective of this work was to evaluate the loss of mechanical resistance to compression and flexure and the loss of mass of the mortars with effluent sludge from paper industry, when exposed to saline environments. The specimens were done with 0, 5, 10 and 15% of incorporation in lime paste and subjected to saline mist equipment that sprays salt solution in cycles simulating natural degradation conditions using literature data. It can be concluded that mortars with a15%incorporation obtained a significant loss of mass and a decrease in their mechanical resistance, which impairs their use in civil construction and influence in other properties of the material, with a level of incorporation of 10% the results within Brazilian standards.

Cemented tungsten carbides are a sintered powder - metallurgical product essential to modern industry. Because of their moderate unit price and our dependence upon foreign sources for the component raw materials, a growing recycling industry has developed in the United States. There are two basic approaches taken to recycling cemented carbides; those which leave constituting materials unaltered or direct-reuse and those which separate the constitutes back to the raw components. To separate the carbides back to their raw components usually requires expensive chemical processing and is thus confined to the lower value materials such as grinding sludges. The direct-reuse methods recycle cemented carbides back to an intermediate level, a powder capable of being recompacted and resintered into a functional end-product. The three most commonly used methods of direct-reuse recycling, the coldstream process, bloaching and the Bernard or zinc process, are reviewed,

IT HAS BEEN KNOWN for many years that alloy steels can become brittle when tempered in the range of 350-600°C, or cooled slowly after heating to higher temperatures. The metallurgical literature reveals that blacksmiths were aware as early as 1883 that water quenching was necessary after heat treatment above 600°C to avoid brittleness. It has also been known for years that the problem is associated with trace impurities; a paper in the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute of 1894 refers to the brittle, faceted fractures that occur in steels containing arsenic, phosphorus or sulphur. However, definitive investigation of the mechanism of embrittlement has been possible only within the last decade with the introduction of new experimental techniques to investigate surfaces, especially Auger electron spectroscopy. It is now possible to study in detail the chemistry of surfaces with a resolution of an atomic layer or two, and enormous progress has been made recently in studying the segregation of impurities to grain boundaries by exposing the boundaries by fracture inside the microscope. A clear picture of the processes occurring and their interpretation is now emerging, as was particularly clear at the recent 1977 ASM Materials Science Seminar on Interfacial Segregation held in Chicago in October. Recent research in this area has pointed the way for commercial exploitation of this new knowledge and experimental technology. It is the purpose of this article to trace progress in understanding temper embrittlement and to indicate other areas where control of interfacial segregation and its effects can be important in metallurgical applications.

AN important regional meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held, at Salt Lake City on Aug. 22 to 26, jointly with the fifth annual meeting of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress. The whole meeting was marked by enthusiasm, keen attention to the subjects under discussion, and many renewals of personal contacts. The trips to the various plants were well attended and the local press paid much attention to the meeting. The A. I. M. E. sessions began Aug. 23, with a non-technical morning session. J. 0. Elton, manager for the International Smelting Co., presided. The purpose of this session was to present in a non-technical manner the relation of flotation to mining, smelting, and the State. Ernest Gayford, metallurgist with the General En-gineering Co. of Salt Lake City, gave the definitions of flotation as suggested by Rickard, the dictionary, Weinig, and Taggart. The active agent in flotation is the air bubble, and the two prime requisites are the formation of bubbles and the creation of selective action of the bubbles for metallic particles instead of for gangue particles. Broadly, all the sulfides are floatable minerals, but the oxides, carbonates, silicates and sulfates are not. As far as Utah is concerned, flotation has been one of the greatest means of conserving its natural re-sources, because it has converted millions of tons of waste rock into pay ore; it is recovering millions of pounds of metal formerly lost in tailings; it has con-verted the zinc from a liability into an asset; and has kept thousands of men at work and distributed millions in dividends for the benefit of the State. As to the future of flotation, Mr. Gayford can con-ceive that the next 5 or 10 years may see as much, if not more, advance than was made in the preceding period. The big problem is dressing oxides, carbonates, silicates, and sulfates, and simplification of the number of reagents, also the separation of different gangue min-erals from one another.

Since the annual meeting held in February, 1917, when the Woman's Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E., was formed, the work of organization, which of necessity must be slow, has steadily gone forward. Under the Chairmanship of Mrs. C. C. Burger of the Welfare Committee, three active sub-committees have been formed: that of Americanization; under Mrs. Levi Holbrook, who is eminently fitted for such a position, by her active and valuable work in a number of the fine patriotic societies of our country; the Belgian Relief Committee, under Mrs. Henry H. Knox, which has clone phenomenal work in the three months of its existence, and whose report is later given in detail; and the Emergency Committee under Mrs. Herman A. Prosser, which has a fund already established, and is. in close touch with Major Arthur S. Dwight, ready to act when necessity arises. The officers of the Auxiliary feel more than gratified at the response so far received, and in a later issue will print extracts from letters, if permission can be gotten from the writers, showing the interest and enthusiasm that have beer aroused by the formation of a Woman's Auxiliary. Answers have even come from far Korea "the hermit nation," from Australia, from South America, showing what a bond of sympathy and, helpfulness is in process of growth. It is our sad duty to announce the death of our Treasurer, Mrs. George D. Baryon, who, from the very inception of our plan to organize, was an inspiring and valuable co-worker. Her place will be difficult to fill. Mrs. Arthur S. Dwight is Acting Treasurer at present. The Auxiliary wishes to express its heartiest thanks to Mr. Stoughton, the genial and efficient Secretary of the A. I. M. Early detection of spontaneous combustion is of utmost importance in underground coal mining to prevent major disruptions of production and to ensure a safer working environment. This paper presents the work done in developing a suitable system for the early detection of heating in a hydraulic coal mine. Laboratory studies on the products of oxidation for Balmer 10 seam coal showed that a significant amount of carbon monoxide is produced during the early stages of heating and that detection methods based on the analysis of other gases, such as hydrogen, ethane or ethylene, are not a better alternative for this coal. The four-point carbon monoxide monitoring system recently installed at the hydraulic mine is discussed in this paper. It is believed that by studying the trend of carbon monoxide concentration in the mine air, it will be possible to detect heating at an early stage. Field tests carried out so far have indicated that infra-red technology will prove to be a powerful tool in the hydraulic mine, particularly for locating hidden oxidation or fire in cracks, fissures, underground workings and coal outcrop areas before it spreads extensively. The project is jointly sponsored by EMR, CANMET, Mining Research Laboratories and Kaiser Resources Ltd.

"Inhalation of certain forms of silica, asbestos and some other respirable dusts can result in pulmonary fibrosis, characterized by destruction of the surfaces of alveoli and respiratory bronchioles. Fibrous thickening of the alveolar septa decreases the lung's capacity for gas exchange.Pulmonary macrophage damage by respired dust may initiate the fibrotic response.In one proposed mechanism, dust particles interact with the plasma membrane of a macrophage. This damages the cell or induces some hyperactivity of the cell, resulting in excessive release of lysosomal enzymes and reactive forms of oxygen (1). These reactive enzymes or radicals then damage the alveolar surface epithelial cells. A second mechanism has also been pro¬posed (2,3) in which dust damage to the macrophage causes the release of mediator substances which induce pulmonary fibroblast cell proliferation and increased collagen synthesis. This produces fibrous tissue in the terminal air spaces (4,5).Mineral surface interactions with plasma membrane lipoproteins have been proposed as a mechanism of lytic damage of pulmonary cells by silica dust in numerous models (6,7). The significance of dust surface proper¬ties has been further revealed in studies showing significant changes in dust induced cytotoxicity as a function of dust surface crystallinity and organic or inorganic contamination or coating of mineral surfaces (8,9). Such modification of the mineral surface might interfere with surface sites responsible for the toxicity of dusts for pulmonary macrophages, thus interrupting the early stages of the process of fibrosis.In vitro cellular assay systems using erythrocyte hemolysis or the release of macrophage cytosolic or lysosomal enzymes following dust challenge, have been used to analyze the initial mechanism of dust damage to cells. However the ability of these assays to predict the pulmonary disease producing potential of various dusts is imperfect owing to some ""false positive"" results. These assays as performed are therefore questionable models for the initial lesion in pneumoconiosis or silicosis. In particular, kaolin frequently is found to have comparable biological activity to silica quartz in these assays (10,11).Silica and kaolin have distinctly different fibrogenic potentials. Silica is highly fibrogenic, resulting in both acute and chronic silicosis (12). Some epidemiological data and animal experimentation data have indicated that long term exposure to kaolin can result in pneumoconiosis; however, kaolin is relatively benign as compared to silica (13-18). Kaolin is also of interest because it is one of the major mineral inclusions in Eastern U.S. bituminous coals. We have observed that exposing respirable sized native silica or kaolin for two hours to pulmonary macrophages results in a greater enzyme release for kaolin exposures, on a dust mass basis. Exposure of erythrocytes to the dusts also results in greater levels of hemolysis by kaolin for equal mass respirable dust doses. Therefore, these results do not correlate positively with known disease inducing potentials of the two dusts.Characterization of physical and chemical surface properties of dusts involved in occupational exposures, and characterization of the alteration of those surface properties which are likely to occur upon deposition of the dust in the lung, should improve the identification of respiratory disease hazards.Inhaled dust particles deposited in the lower respiratory tract will come in contact with pulmonary surfactant. This surfactant forms a surface film on and emulsion in the liquid hypophase coating of the alveoli and respiratory bronchioles. The primary constituent of this pulmonary surfactant is the lipid diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, lecithin (19). Because this lipid is also a major component of cell membranes, it is possible that surfactant can interact with mineral dust to alter its Interaction with macrophages and other pulmonary cells and, thus, it"

In order to evaluate the corrosion resistance of zirconium in mineral extraction processes, such as a clay-hydrochloric acid leaching process for extracting alumina, the Bureau of Mines conducted corrosion studies in HCl-AlC13-FeC13 environments. A series of weight loss and electrochemical tests were conducted at 25° and 65° C in aluminum chloride (AlC13) plus hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions containing 0 to 1,000 ppm ferric ion. It was determined that zirconium, which normally exists in a passive state in chloride-containing solutions, undergoes pitting attack in solutions containing more than 100 ppm of ferric ion. It is also shown that an oxide film prepared in air at high temperature offers protection in acid solutions containing levels of ferric ion from 300 to 1,000 ppm.

The data here given were obtained by 1500 tests made by the United Verde Copper Co. to determine the most economical air pressure for the operation of hammer drills under the varying conditions of use, and to investigate the variation in drilling speed at different air pressures. Twelve models of drills were used at gage pressures ranging from 40 to 130 Ib. No effort was made to harmonize theory and practice; but rather to formulate empiric rules that would cover the average variation of the results obtained. These rules on the performance of hammer drills, based on the air pressure as the main variable, however, are not necessarily of universal application, but they apparently satisfy the results obtained in this series of tests. The drilling conditions at this property vary widely; an average of twenty-one machine shifts to a 3-ft. (0.9-m.) round has been found necessary in some of the development work, while an advance of 56 ft. has been made in seven shifts in the "oxide" ground. This range precludes the adoption of one type of drill as a standard; consequently almost every kind of hammer drill sold in this country has been tested. At present, sixteen models are in use, of which two types of the heavy (150 to 160 lb.) mounted drills, one of the light mounted drill, one stoper, and two hand plugging drills are considered as standard. Method of Conducting Tests All machines were of the wet type, and were selected as being representative of the several types in use at this property; all had been in use from two to four months except the Waugh 66 and the Sullivan DX61, which were new. All machines were thoroughly overhauled before they were sent to the testing ground. The same limitations' that characterized 1931 existed in the old fields of Indiana and Illinois during 1932. Prices remained low. The average for the year for Illinois and southwestern Indiana was $1.032 as against $0.852 for 1931 and $1.616 for 1930. In September a curtailment of production of about 25 per cent became effective and was continued to the end of the year. There were no new discoveries and very little wildcatting was done. Considering the age of the wells, and the number still producing, there were few abandonments. The most outstanding thing about the old fields in these states is their long continued productivity. Illinois The fields along the southeast end of the LaSalle anticline had their peak of 33,686,000 bbl. in 1908. In 1932, with a 25 per cent restriction for 355 months, these fields produced 4,661,000 bb1.l There were 52 new completions (most of them in old territory) and of these 33 were dry, 8 were gas, and 11 were oil wells. The new oil wells had a total initial of 102 bbl., or an average of 9.3 bbl. per well. Nineteen of the new producers were in Crawford County. There were about 200 wells abandoned in the old southeast fields in 1932 as compared to 210 in 1931. The greatest number, 86, were in Lawrence County. To the end of 1932, the four major counties—Clark, Crawford, Lawrence and Wabash—had produced almost 394,000,000 bbl. from 92,160 acres. Better than one-half of this was produced in Lawrence County from 26,240 acres. The Dupo area of Sinclair County had no additions to production although four wells were drilled. On the Jacksonville structure in Morgan County, six gas wells with an average depth of 300 ft. were drilled to sands in the base of the Pennsylvanian. They produced an open-flow total initial of 2,000,000 cu. ft. This gas will be developed further to supply a local market.

Capper Pass & Son Limited Was, until its recent closure, the world's largest producer of tin from secondary materials including solder drosses, non-ferrous smelter flue dusts, tin based metal alloys, residues and slags. Polonium-210, an alpha emitting radionuclide, was present in varying concentrations in some of the numerous feed materials processed by the smelter and refiner. The polonium-210 followed a complex path through the process flowsheet. This paper discusses the behaviour of polonium, both from its arisings in other smelters' process streams and through the entire Capper Pass smelting and refining circuit. The consequential personnel safety and environmental precautions necessarily taken in some areas of the process operation are outlined.
