Mineral Changes that Occur During Coal Gasification

Traditionally, mineral processing plants are designed to achieve the highest recovery of valuable material with limited regard for the cost of managing waste products-both solid and water components. As an industry, we are confronting ever more stringent environmental standards and lower grade deposits requiring more intensive processing. The most profitable processing route can, in fact, lead to costly issues downstream. Issues or risks associated with waste management include water treatment and handling and storage of potentially acid generating material. The capital and operating costs of dealing with these issues are significant and should be considered as a consequence of plant design and optimisation. The authors of this paper are involved with a number of projects where process operation changes offer opportunities to mitigate risks associated with water and waste management. Examples of these changes will be discussed along with the estimated benefits to the value of the project and reduction of long-term environmental risks. Process changes include 1) the application of in-plant water treatment as opposed to dealing with the entire tailings management facility and 2) the potential to reduce metal leaching and acid rock drainage through the preferential liberation of carbonate minerals in the grinding process.

The Sc-Y and Sc-Zr systems were studied by thermal and X-ray methods. Both systems are characterized by complete solid solubility in the low temperature hexagonal form and in the high temperature bcc form. In the Sc-Y system, there is a minimum in the solidus at 50 at. pct and 1365°C, while the solidus in the Sc-Zr system follows a nearly straight line relationship between the melting point of scandium and zirconium. There is a minimum in the temperature of transition from hexagonal to bcc in the Sc-Y system at 43 at. pct Y and 1175°C; while the temperature of transition is raised in the Sc-Zr system to a maximum of 1415 °C at 30 at. pct Zr. INTEREST in the metals of the first transition series has usually stemmed from their useful properties; however, there is now a great deal of interest in determining the fundamental nature of these metals. Since scandium is the first of these transition metals, a study of the preparation and Properties1 and the alloying behavior of scandium2 was initiated. In a continuing study of the alloying behavior of scandium, the systems of scandium with zirconium and yttrium have been established. Extensive solid solubility in both the Sc-Zr and Sc-Y systems was expected from application of the classical rules of Hume-Rothery. Also, the modified Darken and Gurry plot as suggested by Gschneid-ner3 showed ideal conditions for solubility in the Sc-Zr system with less favorable conditions in the Sc-Y system. The effect of scandium on the transformation temperature of zirconium and yttrium was of interest, since a recent empirical observation by Uly and Burr4 predicted that the solute scandium would raise the transformation temperature of zirconium and lower the yttrium transformation. In addition to noting the validity of the above predictions, the SC-Y and Sc-Zr systems were established. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Materials. The metals employed in this investigation were crystal bar zirconium, distilled scandium prepared by the method described by Spedding, et al.1 and yttrium prepared by the method described by Carlson, et a1.5 The major impurities present in these metals are listed in Table I in ppm. Alloy Preparation. All the alloys examined were initially formed by comelting the two metals in a nonconsumable electrode arc-melting furnace under an atmosphere of purified helium or argon. The buttons were inverted at least five times and re-melted each time to ensure homogeneity. During preparation of Sc-Zr alloys, approximately 1 wt pct was lost which was attributed entirely to the loss of scandium by distillation. When preparing Sc-Y alloys, approximately 1.5 wt pct was lost, but it was assumed that the intended composition was maintained, since the relative weight lost when arc melting the component metals was nearly the same. Samples weighing 15 to 20 g were prepared for time-temperature thermal analysis, while only 1- to 2-g samples were prepared for the optical pyrometer and X-ray diffraction studies. Thermal Methods. The solidus and the melting points of the metals were determined by an optical pyrometer method described previously.2 The temperatures at which the transformation from hexagonal to bcc occurs were determined by differential thermal analysis. Several points on the solidus and liquidus in the Sc-Y system were also determined by this method and are in good agreement with those obtained by the optical pyrometer method. The procedure followed in the preparation of samples for thermal analysis and the furnace used have been described elsewhere.2'6 Since a limited quantity of scandium was available, most of the alloys were not melted during thermal analysis, thus avoiding contamination by the crucible. The alloy could then be reused and the composition changed by adding the desired quantity of solute to obtain the next alloy. Heat Treatment and X-Ray Methods. In order to ensure homogeneity, the "as arc-melted" alloys Were wrapped in tantalum foil, sealed in quartz capsules and heated at 1100°C for 15 hr and then cooled at a rate of 8 deg per min. Wet-drum magnetic separators are used extensively for upgrading iron ore and for magnetite recovery in dense-medium circuits. In this study the performance of a continuous, laboratory wet-drum magnetic separator was evaluated with and without the application of ultrasonic energy when processing dense medium slurries. Test variables included magnetic-to-nonmagnetic ratio, solids concentration, and nonmagnetic materials. The results indicate that under certain conditions, the purity of the magnetic material increased after ultrasonic treatment.

In this manuscript, the facts about cyanide are presented beginning with a brief history and definition and ending with a discussion on cyanide alternatives. Other topics include speciation, physical characteristics, toxicity, manufacturing, cyanogenics, cyanide cycle, separation, destruction, and markets including those outside the mining industry. Emphasis, of course, is placed on gold production by leaching and how it is influenced by ore type, mineral characteristics and economics as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

The plant and processing site at Porgera has been built on a levelled mudstone ridge about lkm E of the mine. Excavation of 7xl06m3 of soil and rock was necessary to achieve the required area. The exposed mudstone belongs to the Chico Formation and is weak, sheared and readily breaks down by slaking upon exposure. Tectonic uplift and subsequent erosion have produced the present landscape of narrow bedrock ridges, with deep colluvium in the incised valleys. The deep excavation to a maximum of 60m, has rapidly unloaded the mudstone, and subsequent stress relief has caused rebound and dilation of the material. The processes of pore pressure equilibration, softening, progressive failure and loosening, combine to deteriorate the newly exposed rock mass. In this study, recovery of copper from solid material (obtained by leaching of chalcopyrite with oxalic acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide) with a copper oxalate structure was carried out selectively using HCl. The chemical composition of the solid was as 29.3%, 9.7%, and 13.3% for Cu, Fe, and S, respectively. Selective recovery of copper by degrading the copper oxalate structure with a low-solubility product (Ksp = 4.43 × 10−10) was performed by conventional leaching in the presence of HCl. The optimum leaching conditions were determined as 5 M of HCl concentration, 318 K of leaching temperature, 120 min of leaching time, 25 ml/g of liquid–solid ratio and 400 rpm of stirring speed. Under these conditions, approximately 77% of copper and 3% of iron were taken into the solution. According to the characterization of the leach residue that was obtained, the oxalate structure was degraded. Moreover, the results of XRD analysis showed that the sulfur (S) and cubanite (CuFe2S3) phases were mostly observed in leaching residues, and this was supported by the SEM-EDX data. Based on the results, it may be stated that selective copper extraction can be obtained from a chalcopyrite concentrate by a two-step leaching method using a conventional hydrometallurgical technique.

The year 1988 unexpectedly turned out to be a good year for the US coal industry. In fact, it was a third consecutive year of record coal production. Accord¬ing to preliminary Energy Information Administration data for 1988, domestic coal consumption went up 5%, or 41 Mt (45 million st), from 1987. Coal exports were up by a surprising 13.6 Mt (15 million st). In 1988, 22.7 Mt (25 million st) of coal were drawn from stockpiles for consumption. Even so, US coal production increased to 862 Mt (950 million st). That was up 28 Mt (31 million st) from 1987. While coal consumption, exports, and production were up, delivered prices for steam coal continued to slide during the year. Metallurgical coal prices, however, firmed up and showed a moderate increase. This reflected tight metallurgical coal markets at home and abroad. Coal consumption US coal consumption reached 800 Mt (882 million st), compared with 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Increased metallurgical coal consumption was one factor. Most of the rise in coal consumption, however, was due to unexpectedly high electricity demand. Unseasonably hot summer weather al lowed added coal-fired electric generation to supplement the drought-related reduction in hydro-electric power supply. Electric utilities consumed 687 Mt (757 million st) of coal in 1988, 35.4 Mt (39 million st) more than in 1987. Coal-fired power plants remained the primary source of US electricity generation, providing 57% of the total in 1988. Coal consumption at coke plants increased 13%, to 38 Mt (42 million st), from the level consumed in 1987. This increase reflects the recent recovery in the iron and steel industry. Metallurgical coal consumption in 1988 could have been greater. But US coke plants reportedly reached their maximum practical production capacity. As a result, net US coke imports amounted to 1.45 Mt (1.6 million st). Despite increased industrial activities, steam coal consumption by industrial plants was up only slightly from the 1987 level, amounting to 69 Mt (76 million st) in 1988. Residential and commercial coal consumption remained virtually unchanged at 6.4 Mt (7 million st). Coal exports and imports US coal exports rebounded in 1988, reaching 86 Mt (95 million st). It was the highest level of annual US coal exports since 1982, when they reached 96 Mt (106 million st). An unusual set of factors led to an opening for US coal exporters in 1988: • a high level of industrial production in Japan and the European Economic Community, • supply disruptions due to labor problems at coal mines in Poland and Australia, • a drought-related reduction in hydro-electric power generation in Canada, requiring increased coal-fired generation, • China's problems in meeting its export commitments, and • a fall in the value of the US dollar. US metallurgical coal exports in 1988 amounted to 56 Mt (62 million st), 9.1 Mt (10 million st) more than the 1987 level. Europe, Japan, and Canada were the principal importers of US metallurgical coal in 1988. European countries, in particu¬lar, increased their take by one-third of US metallurgical coal. The labor problems in Poland and Australia contributed to these higher levels of imports. So did increases in pig iron production of 8% in Japan and 9% in the European Economic Community. US steam coal exports - including bituminous, anthracite, and lignite-increase to 30 Mt (33 million st). This was up from 25.4 Mt (28 million st) in 1987 Contributing to this overall rise were 1.8-Mt (2-million st) increase in shipments to Canada and a 2.7-Mt (3-million st) increase to Europe. Unaffected by the somewhat tighter world coal market, US coal imports showed a slight increase to 1.8 Mt (million st) in 1988. Colombia continue to be the leading exporter to the United States, followed by Canada and Venezuela. Venezuela's entry into the US market is a relatively recent one, having made its first significant shipment in the fourth quarter of 1987.

A job analysis is a written list of the tasks associated with doing a particular job. In drilling, describing the steps associated with adding rod to the drill steel would be an example of a task associated with the job. How to hammer casing or fish a lost drill bit out of a hole would also be job tasks. Develop a written list of job tasks. Ask drillers in your company if the tasks listed are correct and accurately reflect how to perform the job. While each driller may do the job a little differently, some tried?and?true methods are required to perform certain tasks safely and correctly. You may find a separate analysis is needed for different drilling jobs (e.g., a residential well or a monitoring well). Also remember to include the tasks of both the helper and the driller.

Purification of Nickel and Cobalt from Heap Leaching Effluents Using Ion Exchange Resins A comparative study among several chelating resins for purification of a heap leaching effluent from a nickel laterite ore has been finished. Chelating resins with iminodiacetate (IDA) and bis-picolylamine (Bis-PA) functional groups, from different suppliers, have been evaluated for their selectivity and loading capacities for nickel and cobalt over impurities. The two evaluated IDA resins, Amberlite IRC 748 and Monoplus TP 207, showed very similar results for both loading capacity and selectivity. Better performance was obtained at 7 BV/h at a pH of 4. Evaluation of Bis-PA resin showed that XUS 43578 has better performance than TP 220, with a 30 per cent higher loading capacity and superior selectivity for nickel over impurities.

The estimated value of natural gemstones produced from U.S. deposits during 2004 was $12.9 million. This was a 3-percent increase from that of 2003. U.S. gemstone production included agates, amber, beryl, coral, garnet, jade, jasper, opal, pearl, quartz, sapphire, shell, topaz, tourmaline, turquoise and other gem materials. More than 60 varieties of gemstones have been produced commercially from U.S. mines. But commercial mining of gemstones has never been extensively undertaken in the United States. Most of the deposits have been relatively small compared with other mining operations. In the United States, much of the current gemstone mining is conducted by collectors, gem clubs and hobbyists rather than business organizations.

This Tunnel Connection project will include construction of two short tunnels to connect the existing subway tunnels (Red and Blue lines) in the northern loop area of downtown Chicago through a new station. The Southeast Tunnel will connect the Red Line to the new station below the intersection of State and Washington Streets and the Northwest Tunnel will connect the Blue Line to the new station below the intersection of Dearborn and Randolph Streets. The connection tunnels are located in a very dense urban area of downtown Chicago and under several important historical buildings. Both tunnels are curved at the intersections and located at a depth of about 7.5 m below ground surface in saturated soft clay with an average undrained shear strength of approximately 25 kPa. The design calls for minimizing surface disruption and ground displacement while maintaining normal operation of the existing subways during the construction of the connections tunnels. This paper presents mining and cut and cover tunneling alternatives for the project.

The Brandon lignite is a small deposit of very low rank coal near the village of Forestdale in the town of Brandon, Vt. It occurs in association with other sediments, principally sands and silts. This lignitic coal has attracted considerable scientific interest since the middle of the 19th century because of the abundance of fossils in the sediment and the rarity of lignite in New England. A cooperative investigation has been developed by E. S. Barghoorn, W. Spackman, and the author in which different phases of the problem have been worked on in a coordinated research program. This paper presents results of an investigation of the very abundant fossil pollen and spores and some other microfossils of the deposit. The studies on which this manuscript is based were made in large part at Harvard University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Ph. D. degree.

The ability of an explosive to break rock is influenced considerably by the extent of confinement in the blasthole. It is believed that confinement is improved by the use of adequate stemming. The aim of this paper is to present the results of the first and second stages of developing a stemming performance testing rig for small diameter boreholes. The rig was used to compare and contrast the performance of different designs of products. The results showed that different stemming products have differences in terms of their functionality, which can have a major impact on the efficiency of rock breaking. Two test procedures were used, one through the exclusive use of compressed air and the second using a purpose-built high pressure test rig with small quantities of explosives. Both tests were used to identify and evaluate the ability of various stemming products to resist the escape of explosive gas through the collar of a blasthole. An investigation was done to determine the types of stemming products most commonly used in South African underground hard rock mines, and these products were used during the tests. The first stage of tests using compressed air only did not prove adequate to predict with certainty the pressure behaviour in the borehole of a particular product under high pressure conditions. The purpose-built high pressure test rig also did not prove to be a very effective tool to test stemming products under high pressure conditions. The test rig incorporated only the effect of gas pressure on the stemming product, and excluded the effect of the shock wave. This study therefore proved that to take into account only the gas pressure generated in the blasthole is not sufficient to effectively test stemming product performance.

Mobile equipment in oil sand mining operations experience more maintenance problems than similar equipment in other surface mines, due to soft underfoot conditions. Oil sand properties are known to vary with temperature, bitumen content and previous loading cycles. One of the challenges is the widely variable underfoot pressure which supports shovels and trucks. In the case of a heavy hauler driving on in-pit roads, each tire is supported by a different ground stiffness resulting in an apparent uneven surface. Driving over uneven ground causes twist in the truck frame, which is transmitted to the dump body. Through a finite element analysis of a haul truck dump body, it was shown that slight frame twists produce localized stresses in the intersections of the floor stiffeners. These stresses are at times greater than those resulting from the maximum ore weight and are primarily responsible for cracking in these intersections. Syncrude maintains high quality haul roads, which are constructed of gravel, and makes every effort to keep the shovel pit roads as smooth as possible. This problem cannot be avoided through operational practices only and must also be accounted for in the design of haul truck bodies.

"Mining companies globally are currently facing severe economic and financial challenges. In addition to global challenges, the South African mining industry has to face other operational challenges that are unique to the country and which threaten the survival and competitiveness of the industry. Profit margins are being squeezed by rising costs and decreasing commodity prices, while labour productivity is greatly affected by intermittent labour unrest. This paper analyses how the South African gold mining industry has performed pre-, during, and post the global financial crisis of 2008. The competitiveness of the industry in terms of labour productivity and industry cost curve position is analysed for the period 2006–2013 to assess the impacts of both the global financial crisis and labour unrest. An analysis of the South African gold mining industry is presented at company as well as mine level. Productivity measure in this paper is limited to labour productivity, in line with limited reporting on productivity. All the data analysed was obtained from the public domain. IntroductionSouth Africa dominated the world as the number one gold producer until 2009 when China took that position, and today South Africa ranks fifth after China, Australia, Russia, and the USA. According to Statistics South Africa (2009), South Africa still had about 30 years of production in the gold sector, a forecast that fluctuates based on the day’s modifying factors. Although South Africa has a comparative advantage in terms of minerals endowment, there are challenges faced by the mining industry that hinder translation of the comparative advantage into a competitive advantage. The industry continually seeks to address these challenges to remain competitive in global markets while addressing national and community needs.Neingo and Cawood (2014) argued that stakeholders in mining are continually concerned with mine management’s ability to translate use inputs effectively into quality outputs. They further suggested close monitoring of effective utilization of people, materials, and money to obtain maximum production of commodities under given conditions. Productivity is measured in various ways, including unit cost, output per employee, and output per unit capital equipment"

This Information Circular covers States west of the Mississippi, and Information Circular 8704 covers States east of the Mississippi. These data replace previously published compilations of energy consumption statistics by States and districts. Future annual studies are planned using the same Btu conversion factors applied in these two Information Circulars.

In November, 1975, Aberdare North colliery was sealed at the surface to extinguish an open fire underground.The fire had developed from a spontaneous heating in one of the open goaf areas of the mine.The mine was re-entered with normal ventilation methods following the isolation of the working district containing the fire. The isolation was accomplished by remotely sealing the open roadways with lly ash emplaced through boreholes from the surface. A subsequent re-entry operation similarly closed the roadways close to the fire and enabled the re-opening of the sealed district.Most of the mine and the underground equipment was recovered after clearing of numerous falls and production recommenced on 25th October, 1976.
