Com o objetivo de estudar a interação da hematita com biorreagente de flotação (Bacillus subtilis), foram realizados experimentos de ângulo de contato. Após a interação com o biorreagente, a superfície da hematita apresentou uma hidrofobicidade apresentando um valor de 46,0º. Os experimentos de potencial zeta mostraram uma interação acentuada entre o reagente e o mineral na faixa de pH alcalina com deslocamento do ponto isoelétrico da hematita. Ensaios de microflotação foram conduzidos em tubo de Hallimond modificado, em pH 6, com uma recuperação de, aproximadamente, 80%. As teorias DLVO e X-DLVO foram aplicadas para avaliar as energias de interação entre o reagente e os minerais. As duas teorias foram capazes de prever a interação que ocorre entre o biorreagente e a hematita. Os resultados evidenciaram o uso promissor do reagente na flotação direta de hematita.

An 8.5-km (5-mile) conveyor has gone into operation in western Turkey to eco¬nomically transport crushed lignite from the mine area to a power plant. This conveyor has replaced trucks as the principal mode of transporting the lignite. One principal element of Turkish govern¬ment policy is the country's commitment to increase electricity supplies for mining and other industries. Lignite is an important source of electric power supply in Turkey. Production was about 48 Mt (53 million st) in 1987, amounting to more than 20% of the total power supply in Turkey. In the western Anatolia supply network, it plays a major role for power generation. Deposits are located in the Soma region of western Turkey. The lignite is of low quality, deposits are scattered, and the terrain is dif¬ficult and hilly. These conditions demand an economical and technically feasible method of transporting the raw material from mining areas to the central thermal power plant. The Soma power plant is located about 120 km (75 miles) northeast of Izmir, near the coast of Aegean Sea. An overland conveyor of a unique design has gone into commercial operation at the Soma power plant facilities of the Turkish state electricity organization, Türkiye El¬ektrik Kurumu (TEK). The conveyor re¬places truck transport to ensure economical use of the lignite deposits. Computer-aided design (CAD) added more precision, qual¬ity, and flexibility of engineering in design activities. It also helped quick realization of the project that was executed in cooperation with the German company Krupp Industri¬etechnik and the Turkish firm Gama Endüstri AS. Unique features The conveyor includes several major features rarely combined in a single flight: Overland long distance conveyor. • Horizontal curves. -Steep vertical concave and convex curves to match the difficult terrain. Down-hill conveying. Frequency converter drives with vari¬ able belt speed. Generating operation mode to backfeed the energy to the network. Layout The 8.5 km (5 mile) long conveyor takes the -200 mm (-8 in.) lignite from the primary crushing plant located near the mine to the central, final crushing plant located in the stockyard area near the power station. The drive and belt tensioning assemblies are situated near the tail end of the flight. The high voltage switchgear is housed in a room in the primary crushing plant build¬ing upstream from the conveyor flight. The frequency converters are installed in the low voltage switchgear room located below the control room within the primary crushing plant building. Petroleum technologists and progressive operators constantly are striving to increase the percentage of oil that may to recovered from reservoir rocks through wells. The exhaustive studies that have been made of the function of natural as in the production of oil, for example, have aided operators greatly in increasing the quantity of oil recovered from reservoirs. Natural gas dissolved in and otherwise associated under pressure with oil in reservoir rocks, however, is not the only source of energy available for moving oil through sands to wells. In becoming "reservoir—energy conscious" engineers have learned that in many petroleum reservoirs the edgewater flanking the oil accumulation constitutes a potential source of energy capable, through proper control, of increasing oil—recovery efficiencies materially. No longer is the encroachment of water into the oil— and gas—filled tart of the reservoir considered as an evil to be combatted by devious methods but rather a natural consequence, incident to the withdrawal of nil and as from the wells, that may be used advantageously in lengthening the flowing life of wells and increasing the economic recovery of oil and gas.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated potential availability of domestic nickel from 23 deposits, Evaluations included an estimation of in situ and recoverable resources, applicable mining and processing technologies, and capital and operating costs. Discounted cash flow analysis with a 15-pct rate of return was used to determine the average total cost of production of each operation, Identified in situ resources contain 9.0 million metric tons (t) of nickel; 5.5 million t is recoverable as nickel metal or ferronickel. Demonstrated in situ resources contain 8.2 million t of nickel; 4.8 million t is recoverable as nickel metal or ferronickel. No nickel is available at a total cost of production equal to the January 1983 market price of $3.24 per pound. Analyses indicate that potential annual production can only meet current consumption levels at a total cost of production of $7.60 per pound of nickel, Nickel's availability is contingent on (1) successful adaptability of nickel processing methods to domestic resources, (2) location of a smelting facility, and (3) marketability of byproducts and coproducts. Analyses were performed on the effects of byproduct and coproduct revenues, energy, labor, and transportation costs, and metallurgical recoveries on nickel's availability.

After smelting, the associated mineral ore accompanying Valuable Metal Compounds (VMC),such as titania and borate in BF., most of the VMC were separated from the metal into the molten slag that is an associated slags. Based on several case studies in laboratories and in a practice in a pilot plant on the associated slags , there occur a feasibility to recovery VMC from the slags by anew process- Selective Precipitation Technique (SPT) on which three continuous steps are involved: (1) The selective enriching the dispersed VMC into a designed mineral phase in the molten slag; (2) The selective coarsening the designed mineral phase with large crystal grain size;(3) The selective separating the coarsen phase from tailing by mineral dressing or hydrometallurgical process . Some results on the recovering the VMC from the associated slags by SPT were summarized as examples in present paper. Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks for extracting high-level features from image data. In the present study, a soft sensor is proposed for the prediction of the flotation performance through froth features generated by the use of pre-trained convolutional neural networks. Several state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks (AlexNet, GoogLeNet, VGGNet, ResNet, and SqueezeNet) pre-trained on the ImageNet database are used to predict the metallurgical performance of two flotation systems. The first case study is a batch copper flotation system video-captured over a wide range of process conditions. The second case study is an industrial coal flotation column equipped with a continuous video recording system. The pre-trained networks are used to extract features from the froth images, and these features are subsequently used to predict the flotation conditions and performance. The prediction results by the pre-trained algorithms were compared with the traditional image processing algorithms. This demonstrates the ability of the pre-trained structures to generalize to images outside the ImageNet database. GoogLeNet outperforms other network architectures and provides more accurate predictions of the flotation process behavior and performance.

Abstract - The Horne mine was truly a world class Cu and Au deposit. Between 1927 and 1989, it produced some 260 t of Au and 1.13 Mt of Cu from 53.7 Mt of ore that averaged 2.22% Cu, 6.1 g/t Au and 13 g/t Ag. The total value of Au and Cu production from the Horne deposit at metal prices of US$300/oz Au and US$1.00/lb Cu is an outstanding US$5.2 billion. The Horne mine was also a company builder. After optioning the property from Ed Horne (Tremoy Syndicate) in 1922, the Thomson-Chadbourne Syndicate discovered the deposit in 1923 and quickly grew to become Noranda, one of the world’s premier mining companies. This discovery fuelled exploration and, along with subsequent discoveries in the Val d’Or-Cadillac camps, led to the "economic development" of northwestern Quebec. The Horne deposit influenced and continues to influence genetic models for volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. Early observations at Horne contributed to an epigenetic replacement theory for VMS deposits. The most recent genetic model for the Horne, invoking sub-seafloor sulfide replacement of silicified and sericitized volcaniclastic host rocks within a graben, has subsequently been proposed for another giant VMS deposit, the Kidd Creek mine. The Horne and Kidd Creek deposits show many similarities, such as localization within synvolcanic grabens, long-lived hydrothermal activity uninterrupted by volcanism, sub-seafloor replacement sulfides, stacked sulfide lenses, zone refining, silicified footwall rocks characterized by high positive ?18O values, and association with FIII rhyolites. Notable differences between the two deposits include the lack of andesitic, basaltic or komatiitic flows at Horne, different inferred water depths, high Au content at Horne versus negligible Au, but sub-economic to economic concentrations of Sn, In and Cd at Kidd Creek.

In 1967 the United States consumed 58.8 quadrillion Btu of energy. Both the Atomic Energy Commission and the Resources for the Future, Inc., a private economic forecasting group, predict that the United States energy requirements will reach 135 quadrillion Btu by the year 2000. In 1967 bituminous coal produced 21.4 percent of the energy used in the United States and anthracite coal another 0. 5 percent. Coal Reserves Coal reserves make up about four-fifths of the United States storehouse of fuel in proven reserves. Seventy-five percent of all fuel, likely to be found and recovered is coal. Electric utilities consume more than half of the bituminous coal mined in the United States in generating 53 percent of the nation's electricity. Atomic Energy Commission analysts have proposed the development of a vast "national energy system" based upon long-distance electrical transmission from abundant untapped coal reserves in the western United States. The study predicts that even if uranium supplies are available and economic breeder reactors developed, coal requirements for electricity generation will more than double by 1980 and increase another 50 percent before the year 2000.

Liquid epoxy and polyurethanes are an excellent choice for whatever the aggressiveness of the substance transported and whatever the harmful outside influences, maximum protection is required. They can be used as coatings on all kind of pipelines varying from the mainline coating to the field joint coating. Compared with traditional systems like dual layer FBE and 3-layer polyolefin there are some benefits to be considered like easiness of repairs, amount of coats, application temperature and film thickness. The interior coating renders the pipe surface so much smoother that considerable savings can be realized in pump stations. Apart from the interior of the pipeline, the industry is faced with new challenges like higher operating temperatures of lines and an emphasis on product benefits in order to save money. The contract objective is the development and in mine testing of an Automatic Fire Control System (AFCS) for mobile underground metal mining equipment. The effort described by this report covers the period from June 21,1975 through June 30,1976 and accomplished the following tasks: ? Preparation of Data Handling Plan and data acquisition which included visits to twenty mine sites in eleven states, visits to Bureau and MESA facilities, and a literature survey. ? Data analysis which determined the most hazardous type of vehicle for use in the demonstration, and design requirements for the AFCS, ? Development of recommended design concepts for the AFCS. ? Design and development of the AFCS including tests on a full-scale mock-up of a load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicle. ? Underground fire tests on an ST-2B-LHD vehicle at the Hecla Lakeshore mine Casa Grande, Arizona.

At the pelletizing plant of the Gol-E-Gohar mining and industrial company two parallel dry closed grinding circuits, each with the average throughput of 300 t/h, are used. Each grinding circuit consists of a burner, a dry ball mill (6.2 m×13 m) and an air separator. The ball mill consists of a 2 m-long drying and an 11 m-long grinding chambers. The iron ore concentrate is fed to the drying chamber by a feed chute. The first 1.35 m of the drying chamber consists of 56 flights in two rows to decrease the feed moisture from 5% to below 0.2% and the rest of dryer chamber consists of deflectors to pass the material to the grinding chamber. It was found that when the feed moisture content increased from 1.3% to 3.5%, the throughput decreased by 12% (35 t/h) indicating a low performance of the dryer. Monitoring the wear rate of flights for a period of 12 months showed that the first 0.8 m length of the flights length did not experience any wear. This means that about 59% of flights do not contribute in material distribution and drying. A DEM simulation of feed chute and the drying chamber demonstrated that due to the inappropriate design of feed chute most of materials do not get in touch with the first 0.8 m length of the drying chamber. To overcome this problem, various feed chute designs with different geometries were simulated by the KMPCDEM© software. With the aim of arriving at a proper material trajectory, where the total length of the flights are used, a new feed chute was selected. The simulation results indicated that if the height of the flights is increased from 1.60 to 2.26 m and the slope is increased from 45 to 48 degrees the material arrive at the first 0.48 m of drying chamber. In this manner, the unused part of the drying chamber decreases from 59% to 36% of the length. After installation of the new feed chute, during a period of three months the throughput increased by 36 t/h.

"INTRODUCTION Information on the exploeibility and ease of ignition of acetylene is important in connection with investigations by the Bureau of Mines and others seeking the causes of explosions in medium-pressure acetylene generators.A previous report 6/ gave preliminary results of an investigation made by this Bureau to determine the causes of these explosions. This report indicated the need of amending Federal specifications for ""1/4 by 1/12"" carbide to reduce the amount of fine sizes permitted under the specifications then in force. Tests described in the above report showed that certain sizes of carbide may, under certain conditions, attain excessively high temperatures when acetylene-water vapor mixtures are passed through carbides for extended periods.Federal specifications P-0-101, Amendment 5, June 28, 1944, are now in effect. These latest specifications permit a maximum of 7 percent of ""1/4 by 1/12"" carbide by weight to pass through a 0.0661-inch sieve and a maximum of 2 percent to pass through a 0.0555-inch sieve. Experience has shown that these specifications have insured a safer size range of carbide for medium-pressure acetylene generators.Although the improvement in the size range of the carbides has aided in the prevention of explosions, there have been explosions in which the carbide used at the time of the explosion met the latest Federal specifications."

Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications issued during this period in the Bureau series and in other media. Part 3 describes a short study on the thermal decomposition of RDX and HMX not destined for publication elsewhere. The transportation of cemented and non-cemented mine tailings in the form of paste through pipelines is one of the main stages of paste backfill operations. For the purpose of pipeline design, the rheological properties of the materials, such as yield stress and viscosity must be determined. In this study, the yield stress of two Canadian mine tailings, for gold and copper mineralization, were studied using the vane method and slump tests. The comparison between the vane method and the slump tests indicates that the slump tests generally overestimate the yield stress values for both cemented and non-cemented paste backfills. In addition, the effects of 5% Portland cement (type 10) and mixing time on the yield stress of paste backfills were investigated. The percentage of cement as a binder agent has a direct effect on the increase of the yield stress of paste backfills. Yield stress measurements show that mixing times of 4 minutes and 12 minutes have the same effect on the yield stress values.

This article outlines the results of a computer simulation reproducing the transport of a mixture of air and methane following the outburst on 25 November, 2005 in transport gallery D-6, bed 409/4, at the ?Zofiówka? hard coal mine. Based on a mathematical model, numerical method and boundary conditions from the disturbance caused by the outburst, the Ventgraph system of computer simulation programs was adopted for the study. We performed a computer simulation of the influence exerted by the outburst on the propagation of the air and methane mixture, and compared the results of this simulation with those of the actual event as registered by sensors of the mine monitoring system. A validation of the model allowed us to present temporal changes in the concentration of methane and air along flow routes. It may therefore be of interest to members of our Australasian Institute, who are not members of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, if I give a synopsis of the discussion.My attention was drawn to the fact that my paper did not make clear the extent of the improvement in furnace operations, which followed the use of coke of high quality; this comment applied more particularly to the lead content of slag. "Under contract to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, a study was conducted to investigate the feasibility of using the microorifice. uniform deposit impactor (MOUOI) to measure the size distribution of aerosols containing various mixtures of coal dust and diesel exhaust particles. The project objective was to determine if the mass concentration of diesel exhaust particles, in an airborne mixture of coal dust and diesel exhaust particles, could be determined on the basis of the size distribution of the two aerosols. In general, the mass of diesel exhaust particles is in the submicrometer size range while that of the coal particles lie in the larger size ranges.The MOUDI is a cascade impactor with small diameter nozzles to obtain small cut sizes and rotating impaction plates to avoid particle overloading of the deposit. For this study, a 7 stage version was used. At the sample flow rate of 30 L/min, the cut sizes were 0.10, 0.23, 0.70, 1.0, 2.6, 4.9 and 10 pm.Size distributions of aerosols generated in the laboratory and in several underground coal mines were measured. The primary emphasize of the laboratory tests was to ascertain if the diesel exhaust particles could be separated from the coal dust, regardless of mass fraction of the diesel exhaust particles in the total aerosol mixture. Diesel exhaust, from a Caterpillar Type 3304 NA diesel engine, was mixed with coal dust generated with a· TSI Model 3400 fluidized bed dust generator. Experiments showed the size distributions of the mixed aerosols exhibited two definite modes with the minimum between the two modes in the 0.7 to 1.0 um size range. Distinct modal separation was obtained as the mixture fraction of the diesel exhaust aerosols was varied from 3% to 98%.The field study was conducted in three underground coal mines, two utilizing diesel-powered equipment and the third exclusively using electric equipment. Sampling sites were selected to obtain a wide variety in the diesel exhaust and dust aerosol concentrations. Size distribution data showed these aerosols are bimodal. The mass median aerodynamic diameters of the diesel particulate mode and the coal dust mode were approximately 0.15 µm and 3 to 10 un, respectively. The results, in all cases, clearly show a separation between the two modes in the 0.7 to 1.0 µm size range with the minimum in the vicinity of 0.8 pm. The separation was found to be independent of mass fraction of the diesel exhaust particles, total particle concentration and sampling site."
