In this research, we measured fractal characteristics of over ten typical outburst areas on different scales and related them to their outburst proneness, in attempts to provide new methods for outburst prediction. It was shown that both faults and folds follow the power law on coal basin scale, mine scale or mining district scale, whichever it is. Fractal dimensions are appropriate indices to describe geological structures quantitatively. Preliminary relationships have been established between outburst proneness and fractal dimension. Comparisons have been made among fractal characteristics and degrees of outburst proneness on all three scales. The results indicate that multi-scale assessment of outburst proneness can be made based on fractal measurements independently or supplemented by other assessment methods.

The in situ behaviour of claystone floors associated with the Wallarah, Great Northern and Fassifem Seams has been studied using a comprehensive suite of stress and displacement monitors. The instrumentation was supplemented by in situ and laboratory testing of the claystone materials. The instrumentation demonstrated that the presence of claystone floors is associated with floor heave, extra rib spall, and settlement of the pillar into the floor. Horizontal floor extensometers showed that the depth of extrusion of clay was limited to 1-2 in. A pore pressure transducer installed in a claystone floor demonstrated the possible existence of short-term undrained behaviour of the claystone. Long term swelling of destressed claystone was also documented. Settlement of pillars into claystone floors can be analysed using simple elastic theory. The assumption of plane strain is valid for most claystone thickness/pillar width aspect ratios. Floor heave can be analysed using bearing capacity concepts. However, it is considered that heave is the result of local bearing capacity failure in the rib spall zone. The advantage of this model is that the bearing capacity equation can be applied without resort to unrealistically high factors of safety.

An advanced elasto-plastic finite element model adopting a modified Von Mises yielding criterion was used to simulate progressive failure of the rock strata surrounding a room and pillar mine structure. The model conformed to the strain-softening behaviour of rock and accounted for post-failure residual strength. The simulation was achieved in such a way that material values were updated after each FE run, according to the stress criterion until the solution reached the final equilibrium steady state of the mine structure. The suggested structural stability analysis approach accounted for the main features of the structure degradations produced during loading through changes in rock material stiffness and subsequent evolution of stresses. Comprehensive parametric analysis was performed and the inevitable effect of interaction of the roof, pillar and floor on the overall mine stability limit was investigated. The numerical results clearly showed that linear models could not realistically represent the true behaviour of the mine structure. The results obtained are in good agreement with that predicted in the field.

Underground pillar extraction continues to be practiced in Australia in various forms, in spite of the dominance of the longwall method, which accounts for over 90% of underground production. Australia has been a leader in various forms of pillar extraction, particularly since mechanisation was introduced to the industry during the middle of the 20th century. Historical developments have included a range of thick seam mining pillar extraction methods; the widely adopted Wongawilli method; early adoption of the use of mechanized breaker line supports; and a number of more recent partial extraction systems including what is known as rib stripping. Current pillar extraction practice varies from total extraction panels to various forms of partial extraction, driven by either surface subsidence constraints or by underground conditions. This paper reviews a number of different pillar extraction methods and mining layouts, and also highlighting a number of fundamental geotechnical principles which have been found to be critical for safe pillar extraction ? often through lessons learned the hard way, as a result of back analysis of different accident scenarios. These principles include the all-important understanding of the location of the goaf (gob) edge at any point in the operation, and the management of that goaf edge; the impact of geological structures on local and regional stability; the critical importance of extraction lifting sequences; the role of stooks (remnant pillars); and a number of other factors. The paper will also briefly reference the educational and training practices adopted in Australia aimed at the continuous improvement of pillar extraction safety.

ldentifcation of potential roof problems in coal mines has long been a complex issue due to the wide variety of mining and geological conditions. It is well known that mine roof falls are related to many different factors such as roof strata properties, sandstone channels, regional and localized horizontal stress, vertical stress, and tectonic stress. Many times, a combination of these factors causes roof problems. Through years of ground control experiences, Keystone Mining Services LLC, (KMS) has developed a Roof Instability Rating (TUR) system to predict potential roof problems. The first RIR analysis was presented at the 19th Ground Control Conference (Watts, et al., 2000). The RIR system includes: quantifying each individual factor, weighting each factor, combining individual factors, finalizing the RIR, and setting the criteria for the areas where special support is needed. In this paper, the application of the Roof Instability Rating (RIR) system at Enlow Fork mine will be presented.

The successful extension of the applications in which rockbolts can be used in the German coalmining industry is, because of the very great raining depth combined with a high degree of stress in the native rock, only possible on the basis of a comprehensive quality management system. The quality assurance system consists of material tests on the individual component parts of a rockbolt, of test rig trials of installed rockbolts, of suitability tests underground and of measures for quality assurance during roadway drivage. Only on the basis of exact knowledge of the way in which installed rockbolts function in the underground and possible sources of error and faults can quality assurance be guaranteed during roadway drivage.

This paper overviews the recent research progress in predicting cutting performance using fracture mechanics principles. It is emphasised that rock fragmentation due to cutting is mainly a process of chip formation resulting from crack initiation and propagation or crack interaction for multi-tool cutting. This process can be simulated by using the well developed fracture mechanics criteria coupled to numerical methods. Fracture toughness is shown to be an important and useful parameter in quantifying cutting performance and in designing cutting tools. The paper concludes with discussions on the dynamic effects involved in rock cutting processes which should be taken into account for optimum cutting efficiency and tool design.

3-D finite element modeling was performed to study the effect of bedding plane sliding and separation and tensioned bolt in layered root It was found that the major influence zones of a tensioned bolt are restricted to the neighborhood of the anchor points; that bedding plane sliding and separation releases the vertical stress in the roof above entry but greatly increases the horizontal stress within the first layer of the roof, and that there is a triangular zone between the two adjacent bolts at and near the roofline level that is beyond the influence zone of the bolts which is liable to fail if conditions exist. Based on the results, three possible modes of roof failure are proposed for the design of tensioned bolting.

The paper discusses the state of the progress reached in the development of the diamond wire tool for cutting hard rocks. To the advances of this relatively new technology a substantial contribution has been provided by the research being carried out at the University of Cagliari on samples of granite rocks from different Sardinian stone quarries. On the basis of field experiments and laboratory test data, the mechanism of diamond wire cutting has been assessed. In particular the influence of the rock features and operational variables an tool performance (cutting rate and bead wear) has been elucidated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has modeled yield pillars to determine the effects of reinforcement techniques on pillar performance. Model pillars with width-to-height (w/h) ratios ranging from one to four were reinforced using advanced lateral support systems. To evaluate reinforcement and pillar performance, the model pillars were strained up to 18.6 pct in compression. The results show that the reinforcement had a significant effect on the postfailure characteristics of the pillar but had only a small effect on it's maximum failure strength. Pillar residual strengths increased up to 10 times, while the energy capacity increased by a factor of three depending on the reinforcement method. At maximum deformation, the residual strengths of several types of reinforced specimens exceeded the maximum compressive strength up to 2.5 times and resulted in an increasing positive postfailure stiffness. Test results, data analysis, and application of the results to underground mining are discussed.

Conventionally, roadways in South African collieries are 6 to 7 m wide. This dimension is chosen so as to allow maneuvrability of appropriate mine machinery and equipment, to meet production requirements and to ensure roof stability. Over the last two decades, a great deal of research effort has been expended to understand the behaviour of roadways in different strata within this width range. The results have improved the understanding of the strata behaviour to such an extent that 6 m wide roadways are developed with a high degree of confidence. With the advancement of technology and the quest to mine at a lower cost, some mines in South Africa have started considering the benefits of other types of mine machinery that will require much wider roadways to ensure optimum productivity. The roadways required will have to be about 10 - 14 m wide. The challenge confronting these coal mining companies is the potential instability that might be associated with such wide roadways. This dilemma is aggravated by the fact that, apart from theory, nothing is known about the expected behaviour of such wide roadways. This led to experimentation at a selected site in a South African coal mine where 10 m and 14 m wide roadways were developed and monitored. This paper highlights the experimental procedure adopted, discusses the results obtained, compares the prediction of elastic theory to reality and set the precedence towards understanding the behaviour of wider roadways in South Africa.

Austar Coal Mine (formerly Southlands and Ellalong Collieries) has had a long association with difficult strata control conditions associated with mining depth and a highly jointed/cleated coal seam. The conditions include poor longwall face conditions, cyclic loading, heavy tailgate (TG) roadway conditions, and difficulties in maintaining stable roadways on development at 5.2 m (17 ft), as well as the geotechnical challenges of an 8.5-m (27.9 ft) -wide roadway required for installation faces. The introduction of Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC) to this environment has aided in the management of some of these issues, but LTCC has also given rise to other geotechnical considerations. Additional geotechnical issues associated with LTCC not only require management during operations, but also require consideration when evaluating new mining areas at Austar Coal Mine or potential LTCC extractable resources throughout Australia and the world. In September 2006, LTCC commenced at Austar Coal Mine in longwall panel A1. Since this point the LTCC face has been increased from 147 to 216 m (482 to 709 ft)and finally to 227 m (745 ft) in width, and it has also been rehanded and modified in the three fully extracted panels to date. The application of LTCC in panels A1, A2, A3, and now A4 has been very successful, both from a coal resource recovery point of view and in the management of the principal hazards of spontaneous combustion and strata control. This paper focuses on the geotechnical aspects of the application of LTCC at Austar Coal Mine and also reviews some advances in general strata control management at the mine.

The mining industry would benefit greatly by imaging geologic conditions well in advance of mining. In layered deposits such as coal, trona, quartz, and potash, natural waveguides form and enable electromagnetic seam waves to travel great distances. In the early 1980s, the Radio Imaging Method (RIM) was developed to capitalize on electromagnetic seam wave propagation in the assessments of seam conditions in longwall panels. The initial applications of RIM tomography and comparisons to in-mine mapping of geologic conditions proved that faults, paleochannels, and rapidly thinning coal could be detected and imaged with seam waves. This paper describes the application of electromagnetic seam waves in mapping the margins of a paleochannel crossing a longwall panel and the interesting possibility of adopting the newly developed Full Wave Inversion Code (FWIC) )Newman 1995) to significantly improve imaging resolution. When tomography images are combined with ground control science, a significant reduction in cost, roof fall potential, and waste rock in underground mining may be realized.

Researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health installed 39 instrumented, fully grouted bolts at six test sites in a trona mine retreat panel to study mine roof stability for the improvement of workplace safety. Variables at each test site included bolt spacing, bolt length, roof span, and location in the panel layout. At most test sites, two rows of instrumented bolts were installed, one in or near the intersection created during development and the other in or near the intersection created during second-pass mining. The most significant factor affecting bolt load was roof span. The highest loads were on the bolts installed in the intersections of the 6 m-wide entry. Mining-induced stress resulting from panel layout was the next most significant factor affecting bolt loading. Minor varia¬tions in bolt loading could be attributed to changes in bolt spacing and bolt length. Gas pressure release in the immediate roof contributed to some bolts showing compressional loading during gas bleed-off.

In early 1997, Twentymile Coal Company took a dramatic departure from traditional longwall recovery methods. Previously, Twentymile's standard longwall meshing procedure included the use of chain link fencing material. Beginning with the 9-Right to 8-Right longwall recovery operation, Twentymile incorporated a polyester geogrid mesh system supplied by DYWIDAG-Systems International. This paper discusses the subsequent utilization of the polyester geogrid mesh system at Twentymile.

Coal and gas outburst is one of the serious natural disasters in the coal mines of China. Since 1950, more than 10,000 coal or gas outbursts have occurred in more than 200 underground coal mines of different types. The outburst prone coal mines are widely spread out. It occurs in different types of coal -ma and is very serious in some areas. Most outbursts occurred at the time of roadway driving in coal seam, serious outbursts occurred mainly when entering the coal seam during the cross-cut driving; of the outbursts, coal and gas outbursts We UP major proportion, while pressing out and pouring out ah account for a large proportion; outburst. occur under different operating conditions, but mostly occur during shotfiring. This paper introduces the prevention and control measures as practiced in China and illustrates the three types of outburst cla8sification. Both technology and management are equally important in outburst prevention and control. Measurement of the volume of drilling cuttings and the initial gas outflow rate fm- boreholes have proven to be effective. A special team and organization must be set up to deal with the problems.

Australia is well endowed with extensive reserves of thick underground coal scams, particularly in the range of 4.5m to 9m thicknesses. (For the purposes of this paper, thick scams are defined as being greater than 4.5m thick.) At the present time, the thickest, high production, high productivity underground mining operation in Australia operates at a maximum of approximately 4.8m using single pass longwall methods. In a number of instances, conventional' height operations are mining thick seam coal, effectively sterilising considerable reserves - either because of financial or technical risk concerns, or in some cases poorer quality coal at some horizons in the scam, UNSW has been involved in thick scam mining research over many years, most recently through an ACARP -funded project, jointly with the CMTE in Australia. A key part of that project involved the assessment of the relative geotechnical risks associated with the various methods under consideration. The methods were: single pass longwall; multi-slice descending longwall; soutirage and related caving methods (including the Chinese Longwall Top Coal Caving method (LTCC)): and hydraulic mining. A formal risk assessment process was adopted to review the risks, relative to a conventional 4m high longwall operation. This paper presents the findings of that risk review and discusses the geotechnical issues (and some possible solutions for risk management) which need to be dealt with in order to bring these methods to fruition in the context of the Australian coal industry environment.

Underground bituminous coal mining is a large and significant industry within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and it has a legacy of environmental consequence. For example, in 2008, 13.5 acres (5.5 hectares) of land were undermined by longwall mining every day. Laws and regulations have been promulgated requiring companies involved in this industry to remedy mining damage caused to homes, businesses, and land; replace impaired water supplies; and repair impacts to streams and wetlands. The regulations and technical standards set by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) have been put in place to assure that coal operations comply with ACT 54 of the Bituminous Mine Subsidence & Land Conservation Act and other related legislation. These regulations and standards require operations to address impacts when a mining permit is submitted and as permits are modified and extended. One of the special provisions of ACT 54 is the requirement by the PA DEP to produce an assessment of the surface impacts of mining every five years. The University of Pittsburgh was contracted by the PA DEP to perform the 3rd assessment, which spanned from August 21, 2003, to August 20, 2008. This paper details the findings related to surface structure undermined during this period. A total of 3,735 structures were tracked. Four-hundred-fiftysix reported effects were found, and each required additional information and analysis. The majority of the reported effects were associated with eight longwall mines. Characteristics of the structures were analyzed and discussed, with special attention to those with reported effects. The number of undamaged and reportedly damaged structures (i.e., dwelling, barn, commercial building, etc.) undermined during the assessment period were listed. Lastly, the resolution status and type of resolution were analyzed for all structure reported effects.

Despite more than half a century of experience with roof bolting, no design method has received wide acceptance. To begin to improve this situation, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a statistical study of roof bolt performance at a number of mines throughout the U.S. Case histories were collected from 37 mines with a variety of roof bolt types and patterns in a wide range of geologic environments. Performance was measured in terms of the number of roof falls that occurred per 10,000 ft of drivage. The study found that roof falls are rare when the roof is strong and the stress is low, even with light roof bolting patterns. The focus of this paper is on the more difficult conditions, where the roof is weaker and/or the stress is higher. Analysis of the results led to guidelines that can be used to make preliminary estimates of the required bolt length, capacity, and pattern. The guidelines are based on the depth of cover (which correlates with stress) and the roof quality (measured by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), and the intersection span. Another contribution is a formula for estimating the horizontal stress level in the eastern U.S. coalfields as a function of the depth of cover. The design guidelines are currently being implemented into a computer program called Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS).

Mine planning for a new reserve is based on information obtained from exploratory coreholes. A critical component of an exploration program is the geotechnical evaluation. Poor assumptions about roof conditions greatly add to the risks of mining. Rock mechanics testing is central to a geotechnical exploration program. Typically, 3 to 5 uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests are made to characterize a particular roof unit at a given corehole. The average (mean) of these tests is taken as "The UCS" for that location. Isopach contour maps are then used to show spatial trends in roof strength. Two issues are raised by this traditional approach. The first is due to the large variability in UCS values that is typical even within a single unit from a single hole. The average UCS might be higher at Corehole A than it is at Corehole B, but the difference may not be statistically significant. The second issue is whether widely spaced coreholes can identify valid spatial trends in rock strength. The answer depends upon whether rock strength changes over distances that are longer or shorter than the corehole spacing. This is a classical geostatistical problem. While geostatics have been used to investigate many coal quality parameters, they have seldom been used to evaluate rock strength. This paper describes an extensive investigation of these issues conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in collaboration with Peabody Energy. The study employed the Peabody Rock Mechanics Data Base which contains more than 10,000 individual test results. Data from four important roof units were subjected to statistical analysis: ? Brereton Limestone above the Herrin 6 seam (Illinois) ? Turner Mine Shale above the No. 9 Seam (Kentucky) ? Sandstone above the Eagle Coal (West Virginia) ? Shale above the Eagle Coal (West Virginia) The study did not find significant spatial trends in rock strength in any of the cases. Perhaps there are none, or perhaps the exploration coreholes were just too far apart to see them. These results have valuable implications for the design of geotechnical exploration programs.
