In order to assist better countermeasures for ventilation control in normal/abnormal condition of mine ventilation network in real time, branch relation table derived from a macroscopic characteristic of ventilation network is introduced in this study. The main results in this study are as follows; 1) One of macro characteristics of a ventilation network, as a relation between airflow rates in two branches chosen arbitrarily, is specified under the change of aerodynamic resistances in a branch. Airflow rate in a branch can be estimated by airflow rate in other branch changing aerodynamic resistance by using empirical formula. The empirical formula by computer simulation of the Horonai coal mine, Japan is considered to be a one-valued function with monotone or extremums. 2) A branch relation table shows the macro characteristics, mentioned above, of all the set of two-branch combinations in a network. Elements in the table give both information of control possibility range of airflow rate and total number of extremums in an empirical formula. 3) It is important that when aerodynamic resistance change in a branch is estimated by measuring airflow rates in two typical branches, the two branches should be chosen from branch combinations with monotonous relation in the branch relation table. 4) A flexible expert system to assist ventilation control in the specified branch in real time has been developed by using a branch relation table for a ventilation transfer diagram of the specified branch, such a coal face and an advancing face. A fuzzy reasoning is utilized in the recognition of the safety factor, methane concentration, in the system. And when conviction degree in recognition for methane concentration at the specified branch is too low, the system searches for other branch combinations in the branch relation table stored in the system, to use other ventilation transfer diagram of the specified branch. When a needed ventilation transfer diagram is not stored in the system, the expert system asks automatically the ventilation simulation from other computers linked to the main computer automatically. The system repeats consultation until conviction value of safety in the specified branch approached

The southwestern United States has an abundance of natural lightweight aggregate (NLA) deposits of volcanic origin that are being used in the construction industry within the region. New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California utilize NLA in portland cement concrete and concrete masonry units for weight reduction and related economic reasons. The geological environment of the western United States is amenable to the occurrence of natural lightweight rocks because it contains Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic products that include low-density glass and vesicular material. There are two major classical types of natural lightweight materials of igneous origin; pumice and cinder. These account for the vast majority of volcanic rocks that are presently utilized as NLA. Pumice is an ejecta product generally found as part of tuffaceous units associated with nearby siliceous volcanic centers. Cinder, also an ejecta product, is associated with mafic volcanics and is most often found as a cinder cone. Both are highly vesicular. A third type of natural lightweight material, though also associated with siliceous volcanics, is less vesicular than pumice. It is best described as being a slightly pumiceous rhyolite or rhyolite-tuff breccia that occurs as a siliceous dome or tuft unit that is most likely to be glassy. Uses of these natural lightweight rocks center on the construction industry where they are utilized in lightweight portland cement concrete and lightweight concrete masonry units. The major reason for usage in portland cement concrete is cost saving effected by weight reduction in high-rise construction. The major usage in concrete masonry units, or "block", is for weight reduction that enables a mason to lay more lock.

There is currently some pessimism over mixing of net-acid-neutralizing (NAN) and net-acid-generating (NAG) rock to obtain indefinite near-neutral seepage from mined-rock piles. This is due in large part to the lack of well- documented, successful cases of blending and layering, and to the knowledge of unsuccessful attempts. Past work often defined a potentially successful mix in terms of the ratio of net-acid-neutralizing rock to net-acid-generating rock. For example, one case study indicated the bulk pile-wide ratio was approximately 3: 1. Since this exceeded a common ratio used in acid-base accounting, no acidic drainage was predicted. However, acidic drainage appeared within two years. A large part of the ambiguity in mixing arises from attempts to predict success based on a ratio. This paper looks in detail at simple discrete-zone mixing, where at least one truckload of NAG rock is placed in a particular location with no further rehandling or dozing. The lack of acidic drainage in this scenario is dependent on the intervening distance between the discrete NAG zones, along flowpaths occupied by NAN rock. Calculations show that the bulk mixing ratio of a mined-rock pile is not an accurate indication of whether near-neutral drainage can be maintained. For example, a pile with a bulk ratio around 300: 1 could still release some acidic drainage. Calculations also show that the minimum separation distance of the NAG zones (L) can be so great, even with typical NAG and NAN rock, that the mixed pile could safely contain only a few percent of NAG rock, which would not be sufficient for many minesites with NAG rock. The comparison to a more elaborate, computer-based statistical model shows that the simple discrete-zone approach will provide a reliable yes-no indication of whether any acidic drainage will leave a pile. However, predictions of whether combined downstream drainages will be acidic depend on numerous site-specific physical and geochemical factors within and below a pile that cannot be modelled in a general way, like the number of flowpaths and the nature of their intersections.

The mineral engineer needs to develop an optimum operating strategy to meet his overall objectives, One would expect that, In the modem era of complex computer models, it would be easy to develop an economic model to maximize profits and/or cash flow. Discussions with mill managers Indicate that one mine/corporation's optimum operating strategy is not necessarily optimum for another. This paper approaches the problems from basics "Economics 101" and Illustrates the complexity of developing a universal model which can be applicable to all mines. Case examples are used to illustrate the need for better communication to avoid the basic economic fallacy “that optimization of segments leads to optimization of the whole system.” TECHNICAL MODELS Technical models are a prerequisite to the development of economic models because they provide the necessary Input data to these models, The flow of material from a mine through the sale of the finished product is shown In Figure 1. The ore Is mined and milled, and the concentrate can be stored for sale or smelted and refined In-house or at a toll facility. The finished product(s) are held In Inventory until sold either through existing contracts or in the spot market. [ ] Fairly reliable technical models have been developed for mining, milling and smelter operations. Mine plans are developed to provide a good Indication of the relationship between production and cut-off grade. It is easier to change surface mine plans than plans for underground mines. However, there are limits to maximum production that can be achieved with existing equipment. It Is possible that mine benches may not be developed to handle additional equipment, even If It was purchased to enhance production. More often than not, the cut-off grade Is lowered to Increase throughput goals.

"On underground construction projects, effective Quality Management is essential for ensuring facility durability, life cycle performance and low maintainability. Furthermore, follow on contracts also rely on an effective quality management system for interface congruency. An effective Quality Management System (QMS) is also essential in mitigating risks and meeting schedule and budget performance objectives. For the past 15 years Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority’s Link Light Rail extension has successfully completed over 10 miles of twin bore tunneling and associated underground features including cross passages, deep sump structures and shafts. After the completion of each segment, lessons learned have successfully been implemented to improve the quality of delivered projects. This paper presents the Sound Transit QMS with regard to a number of project elements of tunnel construction projects, with specific focus on quality performance of slurry wall construction, TBM tunnel excavation assessment, segment production and segmental lining installation, and other associated construction features. A collaborated total QMS will be presented in this paper that will serve as a guide for successful implementation of Quality Assurance and Quality Control processes. INTRODUCTION Implementation of a robust Quality Management System reduces defects, errors and omissions, identifies and addresses nonconformance in a timely manner and increases stakeholder confidence in the project. In fact and effective QMS helps ensure that optimal project outcomes are realized both in terms of project delivery and life cycle performance. The two key components of QMS are quality control and quality assurance. Quality Control (QC) is the procedure implemented to achieve a certain level of quality and ensure that products, processes and services meet specific requirements. Quality Assurance (QA) activities are carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the quality control measures and ensure that the QC process is working. A team obligation that recognizes that quality is built into every aspect of a project is the basic concept of a successful QMS."

Particle-size Distribution Specifications for Particulates. Feed to and finished products from size-reduction operations are defined in terms of the particulate sizes involved. It is also well to know whether the ultimate individual particle is being measured, or, if any aggregation or agglomeration of particles exists, whether this has been created by the size-reduction operation. The most complete description of a powder is given by its particle¬size distribution. This can be plotted in terms of cumulative percent oversize or undersize in relation to the diameters of particles, or it can be plotted as a distribution of the amounts present in each unit of diameter against the several diameters. It is common to employ a weight basis for percentage, but there are some data in the literature where frequency, or number of particles, is used. The basis of percent¬age, whether weight, frequency, or some less commonly used factor, should be specified, as also should be stated the diameter, its units, and preferably whether determined by sieve, settling velocity, or other¬wise. Fig. I presents two sets of distributions-ore cumulative and the other in unit intervals. The slopes of the 5-µ intervals of the cumulative curves are converted to percent per micron and plotted as a block, or histogram, from which smooth curves are derived. Powder A has a narrower, or tighter, size range for the bulk of its weight than powder B. Both materials have the same weights below and above the size marked by the arrow. Simpler treatments of distribution are possible. In some cases the significant value is the top size. Since the 100% point is dubious, some amount, as 95 or 98%, so specified, can be called top size. In other cases the percent on some sieve helps define coarseness. Merely stating that all, or all but a small percentage, passes a given sieve is inadequate for defining the true fineness or a material. In 1961. American Smelting and Refining Company was conducting exploration for lead in southeastern Missouri using several geophysical methods. Electrical methods were used in almost every hole drilled during this period. These methods met with only limited success, with one exception. This paper deals with that exception: An Electrical Potential Method used at a single hole to indicate direction to better mineralization. This method was notably successful in the program.

"Rock mass classification systems are often applied in many empirical design practices in rock engineering, some contrasting with the original intent and applications of these classification systems, for example, estimation of TBM performance in various ground conditions. While accurate estimation of machine performance is significantly impacted by rock mass properties, parameters used in many of the existing classifications are more related to ground support design and not rock mass boreablity. The results of many investigations on this issue have shown a weak correlation between TBM rate of penetration and rock mass classification. This limitation can be overcome by fine tuning the rock mass classification input parameters to represent influence of rock mass properties on TBM performance as has been the objective of RME or QTBM. This paper will offer an overview of the impact of rock mass on TBM performance and introduces an empirical equation for predicting performance of rock TBMs based on rock mass classification. The results of the preliminary analysis of a new model has revealed that the use of the proposed system can offer a reasonable accuracy for estimation of TBM performance in various rock masses. 1. INTRODUCTION Hard rock tunnel boring has become more or less the standard method of tunneling for tunnels of various sizes with lengths over 1.5–2 km. Estimating the performance of TBM is a vital phase in tunnel design, and for the choice of the most appropriate excavation machine. During the past three decades, numerous TBM performance prediction models for evaluation of TBM rate of penetration and advance been proposed. In brief, all the TBM performance prediction models can be divided into two distinguished approaches, namely theoretical and empirical ones (Rostami et al., 1996). The most common and recent works on this topic are summarized in Table 1. Currently, two models including Colorado School of Mines or CSM (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and Norwegian University of Science and Technology or NTNU (Blindheim, 1979; Bruland, 1998) models are the most recognized TBM performance prediction and prognosis models in use around the world."

Utah produces a wide variety of industrial rock and mineral commodities, valued in 1998 at $534 million (28 percent of the total non-fuel mineral production of Utah). Major commodities produced in 1998 include: halite; potash and magnesium chloride; Portland cement; sand and gravel; car- bonates including lime, limestone, and dolomite; phosphate; crushed stone; clays; perlite; gypsum; and sulfur and sulfuric acid. Commodities produced in lesser amounts include: diatomite; pumice; silica; lightweight aggregate; gemstones, ornamental stone, and mineral and fossil specimens; byproduct sulfur and sulfuric acid; silica; and building stone. The years 1993 through 1998 were a period of steady growth in industrial rock and mineral production. However, some commodities have grown much more rapidly than others. The robust western U.S. economy has stimulated production of construction-related commodities like sand and gravel, raw materials for Portland cement, lime, and building stone, resulting in exploration for raw materials, development of new quarries, and expansion of existing plants. Noteworthy specific developments include: (1) opening of new aggregate operations and buyouts of small aggregate operations by large national and international firms, (2) expansion of a lime operation and two cement plants, and (3) development of several new gypsum mines. The future of the industrial minerals industry in Utah looks promising despite a more restrictive regulatory environment and a growing anti-development attitude among its citizens. While Utah has become less pro-development than it was prior to the 1990s, it is still moderate compared to strongly anti-development states, so companies have some motivation to choose Utah in their strategic mineral development plans. As long as the western states' economies continue to grow, Utah's industrial minerals industry should thrive.

LaModel is a displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary element method, which is utilized to analyze the displacement and stress in flat-lying, tabular orebodies. In coal mining, the accuracy and reliability of LaModel are proven with the utilization of the Mark- Bieniawski coal pillar strength and the stress gradient formula with proposed methodologies. However, the application of LaModel is limited to coal mines due to the default coal pillar strength properties. Recently, the stress gradient functions have been established and used to derive concentric rings of zones to simulate stone mine pillar yielding in LaModel. Also, to gain a robust understanding of the brittle failure mechanism and its effect on pillar strength, an S-Shaped failure envelope, where rock mass' cohesive and frictional strength components mobilize as a function of confinement (e.g., minimum principal stress), has been implemented into FLAC3D software. Therefore, by employing brittle failure criteria, the pillar strength stages at various width-to-height ratios and different pillar dimensions are estimated for four benching stages. The estimated pillar strengths and stress gradients for benching conditions are then used to calibrate LaModel in-seam material properties and compare stresses computed by LaModel and FLAC3D. Consequently, this study aims to increase the safety measures in the stone mining industry by implementing the practical use of LaModel for underground stone mines' initial development to various stages of bench mining.

The term ball clay is applied to plastic sedimentary clays that have a high content of kaolinite and that possess white firing properties and high green strength (Mitchell and Stentiford, 1973). However, the name ball clay is not derived from any specific property of the clay. Instead, it comes from the original method of production in southwestern England (Scott, 1929). From open pits, the clay was cut into cubes with hand tools. The sides of the cubes were about 220 to 250 mm (9 to 10 in.) and weighed 14 to 16 kg (30 to 35 lb.). The eventual rounding of the corners with handling before sale gave rise to the term ball clay. Ball clays provide the workability and green strength required by the whiteware section of the world's ceramic industry. The main applications are in the sanitaryware, tile and tableware sectors. Each, though, requires particular technical properties in the ball clay component. The clay has to be as white firing as possible for all applications. However, for sanitary-ware, the rheological properties are most important. For tableware, fired whiteness and freedom from specking are the main criteria. Tiles need a reasonable green strength but the clay also needs to be cost-effective. The technical properties of the individual clays in any deposit depend on the clay mineral assemblage. This, in turn, depends on the geological formation of the deposits. Hence, it is the latter that largely determines the market sector for which the clay blends from a particular deposit are suited. Formation of ball clays Ball clays are formed from three main components - kaolinite, micaceous minerals and quartz - while carbonaceous material is also often present. The crystallinity of the kaolinite and mica varies. There are also occasional minor occurrences of feldspar, chlorite, montmorillonite andmixed. layer minerals. Marcasite, siderite and anatase also occur in small amounts. The properties of the clay depend on its mineralogical composition and its particle size distribution, particularly in the lowest size ranges. The original source rocks and the environment of deposition of the clay are the controlling factors. The importance of weathering processes in the formation of ball clays has long been recognized (Bristow, 1968). The diversity of source rocks produces considerable variation in the clay minerals formed. Therefore, each deposit is unique, with time-related variation within it. The greatest development of a weathering mantle takes place in a tropical climatic environment. Plant remains confirm that most ball clay deposits were formed under hot and wet conditions. Sedimentation of the clays had to be in fresh or low salinity water or clay minerals detrimental to whiteware manufacture would have been formed. Fresh water traps for the ball clay, sand and lignite sequences depended -on tectonic features, such as basin development along fault zones or lakes and lagoons on the edge of a large scale embayment. "Dust pollution is very serious in coal mining process, which is a great threat to the underground staff health and equipment and facilities safety. Coal seam water injection in mining process is an effective way to reduce coal mine dust concentration at the source. However, the effectiveness of water injection is limited in high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam. To improve the moisture content of coal seam, expand the wetting range and enhance the effect of dust reduction by water injection, the injectability and influencing factors of coal water injection are analyzed by numerical simulation method, and the sealing technology under high-pressure condition is studied. Then, according to the practical conditions of Tangkou coal mine, the parameters and process system of process system are designed, the effect of high-pressure water injection in coal seam was determined by testing water injection quantity, water increment and dust concentration. It is showed that the dust-removal rate of the high dust concentration operation such as falling coal and moving frame is 63.49% and 59.72%, the maximum dust-removal rate of multi-processes is 53%, which achieve a high level of application. The research results in this paper is of important theoretical and practical value to improve the water injection effect of high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam and improve the efficiency of dust removal in coal mining process.Introduction With the increasing of the depth and mechanization of coal mining, coal dust, the impact of ground pressure, ground temperature and other natural disasters continue to upgrade the harm degree (Wang 2011, Wu et al 2012), disaster incidents occur frequently, which seriouslythreaten the safe and efficient mining and the physical and mental health of underground staff. Coal seam water injection can effectively reduce the coal dust when coal crushing, prevent the impact of mine pressure, coal and gas outburst disasters, by increasing the thermal conductivity of coal, reduce coal temperature, and prevent spontaneous combustion of coal. In addition, coal seam water can soften the hard coal, so that speed up the recovery rate, improve coal production and efficiency (Wu et al 2008, Nie et al 2007). However, the coal seam in many mining area is with high-pressure and low-porosity feature, Coal joint cracks are not developed and relatively hard, water injection is difficult in these coal seams, then the desired disaster prevention effect cannot be achieved (Jin et al 2001, Zhao et al 2000). In this paper, the numerical simulation and field test methods are used to design the high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam water injection technology, so as to solve the difficult problem of coal dust control in high-pressure and low-porosity in deep well mining process."
