A theoretical radiation mine model, suitable for underground uranium nines, has been investigated. In this model, the rate of ventilation and/or the radon (thoron) gas emanation from mine walls are time-dependent. Several cases of practical interest have been investigated including sinusoidal, linear, exponential, stepwise, or a combination of two or more of the above. Analytical solutions were obtained for the time-dependent radon (thoron) gas emanation rate. However, because of the extreme analytical complexity of the solutions corresponding to the time-dependent ventilation rate case, numerical solutions were found using a special Runge-Kutta procedure and the Hamming's modified predictor-corrector method for the solution of linear initial-value problems. The mine model makes provisions for losses of radioactivity, other than by ventilation and radioactive decay, by, say, plate-out on mine walls, and by other mechanisms. Radioactivity data, i.e., radon, thoron, and their progeny. obtained with the above mine model for a number of ventilation and emanation conditions, are presented. Experimental data obtained in an inactive stope of an underground uranium mine for a time-dependent air flow case are shown. Air flow conditions (ventilation rate) were determined by tracer gas techniques using SF6.

Steady-state material balances calculated from data measured at various locations around process units are useful for many purposes, such as metallurgical accounting, on-line control, and the development of mathematical models. Often it is possible to calculate material balances by several independent procedures when excess measurement information, i.e., redundant data, is available. Clearly, if the data were collected without measurement errors, a theoretical condition never found in practice, all material balances calculated from redundant data would be in agreement. The real situation is that error exists in practical measurements, so that the results of material balances determined from available optional procedures differ. Consequently, best fit computational procedures to improve the material balances by taking measurement errors into account have been formulated. Such procedures can be used also to judge whether measurements are grossly in error due to either faulty observations or defective data sensing devices. A variety of mathematical techniques are available which serve to adjust raw data. The adjusted data permit mass balancing that does not depend on the computational method. To illustrate the need for an adjustment procedure, Table 1 shows a raw data set acquired around the Brenda Mines Ltd. No. 4 grinding circuit shown schematically in Fig. 1. Cyanidation processes for the extraction of gold or silver frequently involve the processing of sulfurcontaining solids that react with cyanide to form thiocyanate. The formation of thiocyanate is an undesired side reaction, and in many cases thiocyanate formation results in a prohibitively high cyanide consumption. With the increasing number of gold and silver mining projects that involve the processing of sulfide ores or concentrates or that utilize a biological sulfur oxidation process, more attention is being focused on minimizing thiocyanate formation and in treating solutions to eliminate toxicity associated with thiocyanate. Though not yet commercially applied, there are several processes available to recover cyanide from thiocyanate to reduce tailings toxicity and to allow the reuse of cyanide otherwise lost to thiocyanate formation. This paper presents an overview of processes available for recovering cyanide from thiocyanate along with estimated operating costs for the processes. Pilot testing data suggests that in some cases cyanide can be recovered from thiocyanate for approximately the same cost as newly purchased cyanide.

Direct mineral carbonation was investigated as a process to convert gaseous CO2, into a geologically stable final form. The process utilizes a slurry of water, with bicarbonate and salt additions, mixed with a mineral reactant, such as olivine (Mg2SiO4) or serpentine [Mg3Si2O5(OH)4]. Carbon dioxide is dissolved into this slurry, resulting in dissolution of the mineral and precipitation of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). Optimum results were achieved using heat-pretreated serpentine feed material and a high partial pressure of CO2 (Pc02). Specific conditions include 155°C, PC02 = 185 atm and 15% solids. Under these conditions, a 78% conversion of the silicate to the carbonate was achieved in 30 minutes. Process mineralogy was utilized to investigate the appropriate feed characteristics, identify the process products and interpret the mineral dissolution and carbonate precipitation reaction paths. Combustion synthesis, or self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS), reaction systems are discussed with respect to thermodynamics and kinetics. In particular, the effect of the process parameters, e.g. particle size, [All] ignition and combustion temperatures, on these self-sustaining reactions is discussed. Combustion theory is used to investigate the effect of the overall actuation energy of the SHS reaction on the combustion front propagation rate and in obtaining a clearer understanding of the transition from stable to unstable propagation. Finally, examples of the application of combustion synthesis to advanced materials processes are made, in particular the synthesis of Ni-Ti-X intermetallic shape memory alloys, TiC-AI2O3 and ZrB2-AI203 ceramic composite materials.

A two-step approach has been developed for surface mine short term planning by the authors. The first step is mid term control and planning by the use of Goal Programming. This step gives optimal results for mid term planning (i. e. yearly or quarterly mine plan) as well as a macro control for short term planning (i. e. monthly or weekly plan.) The second step of the approach deals with short term production scheduling by the application of CAD technique and Systems Simulation. An interactive color character graphic design system has been developed with a software package. The menu-driven and module- structured package provides sufficient functions for surface mine short term planning and makes the model very flexible and user-friendly. This model has been applied to a large surface coal mine for short term planning optimization. Satisfactory results have been obtained. It is concluded that for complicated mining conditions this two-step combined approach gives an optimal control of mid term planning, makes the short term planning easier to avoid blindness; it has been proven that the Goal Programming is a powerful tool for solving multi-objective decision-making problems; guided by GP mid term planning, the CAD technique and simulation software package for short term planning are able to be concentrated on their practicality and flexibility.

Many public domain programs useful in mining engineering, e.g., MULSIM, DZTAB, and EXPAREA, require tedious data input and generate pages and pages of printed output. To eliminate the tedium and to enhance the output, ETI U.S., Inc. developed GEM, Graphics for Engineering and Mining, a collection of application programs and underlying interface tools for VAX/VMS computers. This paper presents an example of how an application program in GEM enhances a specific public domain program. It describes how GEM provides automated graphics assisted input and output. The paper describes how this program uses the GEM User Interface: the 3D GKS device independent graphics, server and drivers, various mining, mathematical and statistical algorithms, the means of handling graphics, data including IGES, and the foreign language interface.

World trade has increased significantly during the last quarter century. However, a new rational for protectionism is emerging which argues for the restriction of trade as a means of preserving and protecting the environment. Fearing lower environmental standards in the Third World, environmentalists are calling for new trade barriers between the developed countries and the developing countries to combat what they see as "eco-dumping." The "greening" of protectionism and the merging of environmental standards into international trade agreements could fundamentally change the world trading system as well as seriously impact the availability of raw materials to provide for the needs of the peoples in both the developing and the developed worlds. This discussion will deal with the agreements and regulations that promise to influence the trans boundary shipment and recycling of scrap metals and wastes containing metals and their projected impact on world trade and metal prices. Emphasis will be placed on the Base1 Convention, whose restrictions concerning trans boundary shipment of scrap metal and metal-containing wastes for recycling took effect on December 31, 1997.

A literature review on quantitative analysis of mine safely studies revealed that numerous investigators explored a wide- range of techniques, including the investigation of bivariate and multivariate statistical models. Although these researchers addressed various issues of accident causation and prevention, they, in general, did not investigate through the use of quantitative models the multivariate relationships of several factors affecting mine safety in a causal framework. In this paper, systems dynamics and structural equation modeling are presented to simultaneously represent and study the effect of policy variables related to accident prevention along with the factors causing accidents and injuries. The application of these models to a group of mines revealed that current training practices at these mines do not appear to alleviate accident occurrences. It is inferred that the use of these quantitative techniques can provide a new direction of research in mine-safety studies.

The combined Bootstrap and Capstone deposits, located in the Bootstrap subdistrict (Section 10, T36N, R49E, M.D.B.M., Elko County, Nevada), are approximately 27 miles northwest of Ca-1I: Nevada. The contiguous Bootstrap Capstone deposits are located along the northeastern and northern flanks of Round Mountain, a horst block separated by grabens from the sheep Creek Mountains to the north-northwest and the Tuscarora Mountains to the east. Open-pit-minable gold reserves as of December, 1989, were 13.27 million short tons with an average grade of .057 troy ounces gold per ton and an overall waste-to-ore strip ratio of 2.5:1. Ore zones in Bootstrap are concentrated along north striking high-angle dikes localized along faults, while ore zones at Capstone are strata form and structural, occurring at the Devonian limestone/siliceous sediment interface and in high-angle fault-filling dikes. Pre-ore faulting produced a complex structural setting for Capstone, dominated by strong northwest fault sets cross-cut by northeasterly structures. Alteration associated with both deposits is silicification with a-strong argillic overprint. Dike emplacement, which post-dates silicification, marked the onset of mainstage gold deposition and argillic overprinting of silicified lithologies. Gold displays an affinity for moderately argillized sedimentary and igneous lithologies. Mineralogic and geochemical analyses of rotary percussion drill samples show good correlation between gold, silica, antimony, and arsenic.

The White Pine room-and-pillar mine started in 1955 from a suboutcrop, down gentle dips, and with a competent sandstone roof. As mining depths increased, extraction decreased 1% every 35 feet. Moreover, roofs became shaly and less competent, and regions of high fault and joint densities, sometimes with and some- times without high lateral stresses, increased the tendencies towards roof falls. Instinctive reactions towards narrower openings did not alleviate the problem. Careful consideration of rock mechanics principles culminated in the development of two variants to the conventional room-and-pillar mining system based on the concept of stress relief through load deflection. The two systems-EquiAdvance Cave, and PressureArch Panel Mining-are complementary. The objective of the former system is to provide relief from lateral stresses through advance caving and in the process also to achieve higher extraction at depth. Where surface subsidence cannot be allowed, the alternative PressureArch Panel concept is utilized to provide stress relief and moderately high extraction ratio. Both systems have been under trial for over three years and, together, produced over three million tons of copper ore. These two systems, and their production test results to date, are described.

Particle shape and size distributions are among the most important parameters that affect the filtration efficiency of phosphogypsum in wet- process phosphoric acid production. Cost-effective enhancement in filtration rate is desired by phosphoric acid producers for higher plant capacity and lower operating costs. In this regard, numerous research efforts have been carried out in different laboratories as well as in pilot and plant testing. Nevertheless, changes in phosphogypsum crystal shape and size distribution deserve special attention. In this study, the results obtained in the presence of Crysmod and Hiflo-S5 surfactants are discussed. The influence of such additives on crystal morphology and size distribution are studied under different sulfate contents (supersaturation). The obtained data are correlated with process efficiency parameters such as filtration rate, digestion of rock, and recovery of phosphate values. Up to 60% increase in filtration rate is obtained. In addition, an increase in digestion efficiency and P205 recovery is achieved due to addition of surface active agents. The observed beneficial effects are explained in the light of the changes induced in crystal habit, size, and size distribution.

More than 55 km of tunnels have been constructed by TBM in the last 12 years to refurbish and upgrade the high voltage cable network in London. These include a tunnel of 20km length using EPBM machines in both clay and granular soils. Route selection was made with reference to subsurface structures, existing ground conditions, using suitable shaft locations addressing environmental concerns. The complex interfaces to manage included obtaining of consents to the coordination of multiple suppliers. The paper describes how all these challenges have been met successfully and how technology has been employed to provide for safe construction and operation in the congested urban environment.

Toxic metals entering surface or ground water from sources such as metal finishing shop spills and abandoned mines can pose a significant threat to public health and the environment. Ion flotation and similar foam separation techniques show great promise for treating dilute, metal-contaminated solutions, and could also be used to treat effluents from many minerals and metallurgical processing operations prior to discharge. In ion flotation, an appropriate collector is added to the solution to form hydrophobic complexes with the metal ions. These metal-bearing species are then removed by flotation, usually with trace addition of a frother to stabilize the foam. In an effort to better understand the underlying scientific and engineering principles that determine the performance of ion flotation, the removal of Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Cr(II) and Cr(VI) has been studied using laboratory scale flotation columns in batch mode. The effects of the superficial air velocity, solution and froth height, nature of the collector, collector: metal-ion ratio, ionic strength and several frothers at low concentrations on the flotation kinetics are reported. Finally, results are presented on methods that might allow regeneration of collector and recovery of by-product metal from the foam product.

No economic activity would take place without human ingenuity, driven by our needs and wants. Economic activity is made possible by the energy from fossil and other energy sources, our technological hardware, the buildings and infrastructure made from materials such as metals, plastics, wood, water, and numerous industrial minerals. Industrial minerals are difficult to define; however, they generally include utilitarian minerals other than metals and fuels. Some of the industrial minerals form an exception to this categorization and, as explained elsewhere in this book, belong to more than one category because of the manner in which they are used. Industrial minerals are so numerous, and their applications so ubiquitous that they often do not receive the attention given to metals or fuels. Nevertheless, without industrial minerals, many of our most fundamental economic activities such as construction of our cities and towns, control of floods, transportation of our people, the search for minerals, the smelting of metals, and the delivery of supplies of clean water would be impossible. How then do we assess the economic importance of such a variety of materials lumped together under the general designation of industrial minerals? The price per ton or the total amount consumed do not satisfactorily explain the relative value of these materials to the economy. For example, the current price of limestone is about $5/t and the price of fluorspar is about $190/t. However, nearly 1.1 Gt of limestone, valued at about $5.5 billion, are consumed in the United States annually, compared with 590 kt of fluorspar, valued at about $1 12 million. It would not, however, be accurate to conclude that the mineral with the higher total value is always more economically important. Many other questions must be answered before making judgments of this type. These questions include how many people are employed in the production, processing, and distribution of the mineral? How is the mineral used? Is it partly or entirely imported? Where do the imports come from? How is the mineral transported? Is the mineral considered critical to national security? Is there a substitute material available in case the mineral supply is interrupted? Where would the substitute be produced? What would be the basic material from which the substitute will be produced? Even when these questions have been answered satisfactorily, the economic importance of the mineral is not completely known until the consuming sectors are studied as well. For example, even though the manufacture of fighter aircraft is vital to the national security, it employs only a fraction of the number of people employed in the housing and construction industry or the automobile industry or the appliance industry. Mineral commodities consumed in these latter sectors of the economy are more significant than those consumed in the production of fighter aircraft, because nearly two-thirds of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) depends on the purchasing power of individual consumers. In comparison, the entire defense budget accounts for only 6% of the GDP. There is no easy way to present the importance of industrial minerals to the US economy because most minerals have diverse applications and products made from industrial minerals often con- tribute to the production of other goods and services. One way of highlighting the value of a mineral would be to relate it to the GDP reported by categories such as construction, machinery, stone, clay and glass products, electrical and electronic equipment, paper and allied products, and chemicals and allied products. These GDP categories represent industries fundamental to the economy totaling $644 billion, or about 12% of the GDP in 1990. However, these categories are not convenient for discussion of the many minerals that are used in our complex economy. In a general way, minerals are the 5% of our economy that make the other 95% possible. This chapter, therefore, discusses a selected few industrial minerals to illustrate their importance to various sectors of the economy.

INTRODUCTION Mineral ore comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding - primary and secondary), natural or manufactured nonmetallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media - steel rods, steel or iron balls, or a combination of autogenous media and steel balls (SAG milling). This chapter covers rod and ball mills utilizing manufactured metallic grinding media. MILL DESIGN The interior surface of rod and ball mills exposed to pulp and/or grinding media are protected from wear and corrosion by rubber, metallic or a combination of rubber and metallic wear resistant materials. Rod and ball mills essentially draw constant power, thus are well suited for use of synchronous motors with power factor correction capabilities as drive motors. A net of approximately 120 to 130 percent of running torque is required to cascade the charge in these mills. The pull-in torque is about 130 to 140 percent with the pullout torque to keep the motor in-step (in-phase) generally in excess of 150 percent. When rod and ball mill are started across-the-line the starting and pull-in torques result in inrush currents exceeding 600 percent which possibly result in high voltage drops. To deliver 130 percent starting torque to the mill the motor design must take into account the maximum anticipated voltage drop. Motor torque decreases as the decimal fraction of the voltage available squared. E.g., a motor rated 160% starting torque with a 10% system voltage drop will deliver 160% x or 129.6% torque to its output shaft When it is not possible or practical to start a fully loaded synchronous motor across-the-line it is possible to utilize the motor's pull- out torque to start the mill. By using a clutch, normally an air clutch. between the motor and the mill, the motor is brought up to synchronous speed before the clutch is energized. If the motor has an adequate amount (175 or greater) of pull-out torque the pull-out torque starts the mill without major disruptions on the electrical system. Since the energy release at initial cascade of the mill charge is an inverse function of acceleration time, a minimum acceleration time of 6 to 10 seconds or more is recommended to prevent damage to the mill or the mill foundation. Economics at the time of plant design and mill purchase determine the drive to be used. The simpliest drive is the low speed synchronous motor with speeds in the range of 150 to 250 RPM connected to the mill pinionshaft by either an air clutch or flexible coupling. Using a speed reducer between the motor and pinionshaft permits using motors having speeds in the range of 600 to 1000 RPM. In this speed range, if power factor correction is not required induction motors can be used; squirrel cage where there is no restriction on inrush current; slip ring where a slow start and low inrush current is required. Air clutches can also be used to ease starting problems with squirrel cage motors. In some areas of the world induction motors and starters are less expensive than synchronous motors at a sacrifice of motor efficiency and power factor correction. Dual drives, that is two pinions driving one gear mounted on the mill, become economical for ball mills drawing more than 3500 to 4000 horsepower (2600 to 3000 kilowatts). Further developments of the low frequency, low speed synchronous motors with the rotor mounted on the mill shell or an extension of one of the mill trunnions could improve the cost picture for these "gearless drives", making them practical for large ball mills. The percent of critical speed, which is the speed at which the centrifugal force is sufficiently large to cause a small particle to ad- here to the shell liners for the full revolution of the mill is given in mill specifications. In the context of this session on "Practical Placer Mining," a projection of the present into the future first assumes that there is a future for Placers. The second assumption is that there is the combination of adequate reserves and a willing, mining investment source to finance placers. This paper will point out the opportunities on both assumptions, illustrating my positive position on the future of gold placers. In order to focus this paper more effectively, I have chosen GOLD as the subject mineral. However, it is recognized that much of the technology for exploring and mining gold placers has been applied to other alluvial deposits; including platinum, diamond, tin, and various industrial minerals (which are often referred to as "placers" though this contradicts historical definitions). Over the past 10 years I have presented several papers on the general subject of placers, most of which are listed under References. These have included topics such as exploration, evaluation, small-scale gold placer mining and decision-making, mining and processing equipment designs, and dredge-mining operations. In an attempt to identify the more promising, undeveloped placer potentials in the world I have usually mentioned the USSR and China but qualified them as being either inaccessible, or, politically difficult to obtain. However, with recent developments in the USSR, the obstacles appear to be somewhat diminished.

Large roof outbursts began occurring in November 1986 at Domtar's Sifto Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario, Canada, working the bedded Salina A-2 Salt unit. The outbursts, measuring about 13-20 m in diameter, released high concentrations of methane from cavities that extended into carbonate roof units. Spontaneous ignitions of methane gas during an outburst seriously burned a mine technician. The Canadian Ministry of Labour contacted the U.S. Bureau of Mines for technical assistance to aid in mine managements1 efforts in alleviating the problem. Initial gas content determinations of salt samples from the outbursts by acoustic test methodology revealed no methane enrichment. In- mine core drilling and subsequent methane content testing indicates the main source of methane in overlying roof units. Drilling the roof units demonstrated the potential of draining methane from areas showing signs of impending outbursting and alleviating the danger. Three mechanisms are considered the most likely means by which methane was introduced to the mine environment. These are (1) hydrocarbon gases released from brines, (2) gas transport along horizontal bedding planes or gas accumulations in bedding separations, and (3) mining-induced fracturing. The abundance of higher hydrocarbons in gas yielded by non-evaporite rock samples from the Goderich mine may be indicative of a former association with liquid petroleum.

In the UK as existing face capacity is replaced, many of the new faces will have higher installed powers and be located in zones of higher strata temperature. These factors coupled with the need to increase production will result in more faces experiencing environmental difficulies, especially with respect to climatic conditions. In many cases these problems are unlikely to be solved, as in the past, by simply increasing the face air quantity. Therefore other techniques including refrigeration will be necessary, possibly requiring major capital and operational expenditure. It is easy to spend large capital sums and incur high operational expenditure without achieving the desired amount of climatic control. There is therefore a great need for reliable prediction techniques to aid in the making of sound, informed decisions which will have a significant influence in the long term on the level of production costs. A computer program able to predict the heat flows and resultant climatic conditions on a long¬wall coalfaces has been developed. Throughout it's development underground measurements have been used to validate the computer model and it has been shown that for an advancing coalface under normal production conditions that the program predicts the climate to within 1°C of the measured conditions. This paper outlines a number of methods available to improve climatic conditions on longwall faces. The coalface temperature prediction program is used to quantify the effects of these methods on the climatic conditions for a model coalface and a comparison is given. In conclusion a cool¬ing strategy for longwall faces is outlined.
