The large size of the modern flotation cells and the high product flow rate from them has increased the importance of optimal flotation of all the particle sizes and of process control. By treating all the subprocesses of flotation separately a new family of flotation cells and a new concept of optimizing the flotation of coarse and fine particles in separate units but in the same row of flotation cells has been developed. The paper discusses the possibility to enhance coarse particle flotation by varying the froth residence time. A function has been developed between the residence time of the froth, air rate and the froth removal rate of coarse apatite particles. The response of apatite flotation to different control variables has been studied and modelled. The results show that the BPL assay response depends not only on the control variable used but also on the feed assay to the cell. There exists an feed assay dependent region within which the froth assay can be controlled by using the froth residence time as the control variable. These regions can be used to tune a rougher-multistep cleaner circuit to optimal.

This section deals with the carbon minerals and materials: graphite, tar sands, gilsonite, and diamond. as well as sulfur and the sulfides of mercury, arsenic, antimony, and bismuth. Table I contains the production figures for each of these commodities in the United States and in the world. Specifications for concentrates are also summarized as are prices for concentrates at the time the section was written. In each chapter an attempt has teen made to describe the more common commercial mineral involved with the commodity, the processes used to recover and concentrate the minerals, as well as geographical areas where these processes are utilized.

In off-line training of a rule-based controller, the significant measure of successful training is the quality of control provided by the generated rule set. In an adaptive or on-line control environment, performance is also measured by the ability to accurately maintain a satisfactory rule set, but within constraints on speed and/or resource availability. Very small population genetic algorithms, or microGAs, have been proposed as a means of capitalizing on the hill climbing characteristics of faster local optimization techniques while requiring less memory and retaining much of the robustness of traditional, larger population genetic search. A traditional genetic algorithm and a similar microGA are developed and applied to two control problems. The performance of these algorithms is analyzed with respect to (1) the quality of the rules learned, (2) the rate at which learning occurs, and (3) the memory resources required during learning.

Following the last Cholera Epidemic in 1872, resulting in approximately 400 deaths, the City Council of Munich decided to re¬place the former water supply system within the city limits by tapping new water supply areas outside of the city. Since 1883 Munich has been obtaining its water from the Mangfall River catchment located some 35 km to the south. Its most distinguishing characte¬ristics are as follows: 1) the water is free-flowing, i.e., a pumping system is not required as the catchment area is 100 m higher than the city; 2) the water does not normally have to be treated, meaning "spring fresh" tap water. On a daily basis, 300,000 m3 of water flow through the more than 100 year old pipes, accounting for 70% of the city's daily need. There was originally no requirement of a water tight system as strategically installed drain pipes prevented the build-up of exter¬nal water pressure on the lining. As the qua¬lity of today's water has become significant¬ly worse, the tunnels are now in dire need of restoration or replacement.

Conventional control schemes in use today are not able to produce satisfactory control when high-frequency disturbances are present in the flotation feed. An advanced model-based control scheme is presented here as a promising solution to this control problem. The main feature of this control scheme is the real time identification of the unknown disturbances in the first few cells of the flotation circuit. This information is used to control the rest of the flotation plant in a feedforward fashion. This control scheme also provides flexibility to meet any metallurgical, economical, or management objective.

The P.W. Gillibrand Company holds 705 placer and lode claims in the Precambrian San Gabriel Anorthosite Complex of the western San Gabriel Mountains. These claims contain large tonnages of ilmenite, magnetite and apatite with anomalous quantities of zirconium (zircon), niobium, vanadium and rare earth elements. Stockpiling of heavy mineral concentrates associated with aggregate mining from alluvial pits has occurred since 1984. The limited reserves of material from these alluvial deposits and their relatively low heavy mineral grades caused Gillibrand Company to initiate an extensive drilling and exploration program to develop the hardrock resources of ilmenite, apatite and magnetite.

"This paper presents an overview and performance evaluation for a reconditioned decades aged open type hard rock TBM utilized for the twin running tunnel excavations of the Second Avenue Subway Project in Manhattan, New York. The TBM tunnel lengths are approximately 2,370 m (7,800 ft, east TBM Tunnel) and 2,190 m (7,200 ft, west TBM Tunnel) with a 6.7 m (22 ft) bored diameter. This “senior” TBM mined through metamorphic rocks consisting of schist, granofels, and pegmatite, and encountered various adverse geological structures, including some relatively heavy groundwater inflows. The ground support was generally pattern friction rock bolts, and steel sets were used in poor ground. This paper presents TBM characteristics and the subsequent performance, such as machine utilization, downtime, cutter consumption rate, net penetration rate, and daily advance rate. Machine operating parameters including thrust, torque, gripping force, and cutterhead RPM, are compared with various accompanying ground conditions. The performance changes between the adjacent tunnel sections are also presented. INTRODUCTION Project Overview The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction (MTACC)’s Second Avenue Subway (SAS) Program consists of four (4) phases from 125th Street to Manhattan Battery Park along the 2nd Avenue (see Figure 1) in Manhattan New York. As a part of Phase 1, Contract 1 was awarded to S3 JV (Skanska/Schiavone/Shea) to build a TBM launch box and subsequent twin TBM tunnels from 92nd Street to 63rd Street under 2nd Avenue. Contract 1 was one of the key contracts in Phase 1 to pre-excavate through the footprint of the follow-on underground stations (72nd St. Station, 86th St. Station, and 96th St. Station) by hard rock TBM excavation. The project team included Client MTACC, S3 Tunnel Constructors, Designer, Aecom-Arup JV, and Consultant Construction Manager, Parsons Brinckerhoff. The major elements of Contract 1 included construction of TBM Launch Box supported by secant pile and slurry walls and mining of twin TBM tunnels with a combined tunnel length of approximately 4,560 m (15,000 ft). The dimension of the TBM launch box was approximately 247 m (810 ft) long from 92nd Street to 95th Street, 21 m (70 ft) to 24 m (80ft) wide along the 2nd Avenue, and 18 m (60 ft) to 21 m (70 ft) deep from the ground surface. The launch box was later used for the follow-on 96th Street Station."

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Climax mine is located 161 km (100 miles) southwest of Denver on Fremont Pass astride the Con¬tinental Divide. Climax employs 2800 people to pro¬duce 42 670 t/d (47,000 stpd) of molybdenum ore. The Storke level, the main underground level, produces 19 970 t/d (22,000 stpd); the 600 level, the lowest ac¬tive underground area, produces 7260 t/d (8000 stpd); and the open pit presently produces 15 430 t/d (17,000 stpd), Fig. 1. A panel caving method is possible because of the favorable geology and geometry of the Climax ore body. Geology The Climax deposit is composed of three separate ore bodies formed in a massive Tertiary stockwork which penetrates Precambrian granites and schists. The ore bodies are elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 914 x 1219 m (3000 x 4000 ft). In section the ore bodies are arcuate with an overall height of 457 m (1500 ft), although the depth is not firmly ascertained. Ore grade decreases rapidly into a highly siliceous cen¬tral core and more gradually toward the outer bounda¬ries of the deposit. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore zone and contains few dilution-causing waste inclusions. Molybdenite is contained in pre-ore fractures which were largely recemented during the three mineralization pulses. Postore fractures, with a spacing of a few inches to several meters (feet), render the deposit amenable to caving when it is undercut. The peripheral rock caves similarly to the ore, but the central core is competent and is difficult to cave. Caving Feasibility Successful caving action requires an undercut area of approximately 122 by 122 m (400 by 400 ft). When the undercut area exceeds this minimum distance, the arching effect is lost, and the ore column collapses. Ore extensions from the main cave area less than 122 m (400 ft) wide usually cannot be caved. Waste or low¬grade areas within the deposit can be left if they are large enough to carry weight around openings passing through them. Experience indicates that these areas should be over 30 m (100 ft) in length and width. Smaller unprofitable units of waste, such as postore dikes, are mined to avoid weight problems and result in ore dilution. Successful caving and ore recovery are dependent upon timely ore removal from the undercut zone because columns of immobile ore inhibit caving and concentrate weight onto the underlying workings. Climax experience indicates that a finger (drawpoint) spacing* averaging 10.4 m (34 ft) yields an excellent caving action and a 92.5% ore recovery at the estimated grade. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a U.S. Department of Energy research and development facility designed to demonstrate the permanent, safe disposal of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste. The waste storage horizon is 655 m (2150 ft) below surface in bedded salt. To date the WIPP project has not emplaced any waste. There are three intake shafts used to supply air to the underground. All air is exhausted though a single return shaft. The total design airflow during normal operations is 200 m3/s (424,000 cfm). The ventilation system is designed to provide separate air splits to construction, experimental, and storage activities. Separation is achieved by isolating the storage circuit from the construction or experimental circuits with bulkheads. Any air leakage must be towards the storage area of the facility. Field studies have shown that the pressure differential necessary to maintain the correct leakage direction is susceptible to the effects of natural ventilation; therefore, extensive studies and analyses have been conducted to quantity the natural ventilation effects on the WIPP underground airflow system. A component of this work is a monitoring system designed to measure the air properties necessary for calculation of the natural ventilation pressure (NVP). This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure at strategic locations on surface and underground. The psychrometric parameters of the air are measured every fifteen minutes. From these data, trends can be determined showing the impact of NVP on the ventilation system during diurnal variations in surface climate. Both summer and winter conditions have been studied. To the author's knowledge this is the first reported instance of automatic and continuous production of time and temperature variant NVPs. This paper describes the results of the initial monitoring study. INTRODUCTION The ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico, is designed to perform two distinct functions. First, it supports normal mine ventilation requirements complying with all state and federal mine regulations. Second, the system is designed to prevent an uncontrolled release of radioactive contaminants from the storage and transportation areas of the facility. Although a nuclear radiation release in the facility is considered unlikely, many special features are implemented in the ventilation system to prevent the possible spread of contamination. The facility is constructed with the waste transportation and storage areas separated from the mining and non-radioactive experimental areas. The ventilation system is designed such that air leakage is from the mining and experimental areas to the storage areas. Furthermore, radiation detectors are located throughout the storage and waste transportation areas underground and an exhaust filtration building is installed on surface to prevent the possible release of radiation to the environment. For over two years the underground ventilation system has been rigorously tested and balanced. It was during this period that the adverse effects of NVP were noticed and subsequently quantified. From extensive field studies and computer models, several mitigating features were designed and constructed and special operational procedures were implemented to control the impacts of NVP. To quantify more accurately the NVP at the WIPP, a continuous monitoring system was installed. This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure every fifteen minutes at strategic locations on surface and underground. From this psychrometric data, the NVP is calculated. Fan operating pressures and flows and strategic differential pressures are recorded from the site Continuous Monitoring System (CMS). The monitoring system provides a means of evaluating how the ventilation system behaves in regard to climatic conditions and to judge the efficacy of the mitigating features and operational procedures. To the author's knowledge, continuous calculation of NVP as a function of time and surface temperature has not been previously reported. Overview of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant The U.S. Department of Energy determined that the plastic nature of bedded salt may provide the best solution to isolate transuranic (TRU) waste from the biosphere. Initial evaluations at the WIPP site began in 1974. In 1979, the United States Congress enacted Public Law 96-164 for the construction and development of the WIPP project. The mission of the WIPP is to demonstrate the safe, long-term disposal of TRU waste generated by the national defense programs of the United States. TRU waste is classified as a low to medium level waste. The waste is stored in drums and does not produce significant heat (not greater than 1 W per drum). The WIPP site is located approximately 47 km (29 miles) east of Carlsbad, New Mexico in the Chihuahuan Desert. The repository is located in the 630 m (2000 ft) thick Salado Formation. This Permian Basin salt deposit is about 225 million years old and appears to have been minimally disturbed by earthquake, faulting, and ground water activity since it was deposited. During construction of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit System, the hand-mining of a mixed-face condition was anticipated on a portion of tunnel located in the downtown area of Washington, D.C. The Section, consisting of two circular tubes, extends from Station 12+80, heading in a westerly direction, traverses along a curve under Lafayette Square, and ends in a northwesterly direction at Station 37+62 (see Fig. 1a). It was near the northernmost portion of the section that the mixed-face condition was encountered. Decomposed rock was first encountered in the invert at Station 31+00. From this point the rock gradually increased in height until it intersected the springline at Station 37+62, the project limit. Summarized within this paper are measurements of the soil load on a horseshoe-shaped portion of tunnel located in the mixed face condition. These measured loads are compared to the soil load on tunnels as determined by current design methods. The paper also discusses rib and surface movements associated with the post loading process. Comments will be made on how the presence of a mixed face condition might help or hender the tunnel design and construction procedures.

The Williams Mine is Canada's largest gold producer, with annual production of 14,000 Kg (450,000 ounces) from 2,300,000 tonnes of ore. Highly mechanized and automated underground mining practices are employed in order to achieve and maintain high levels of productivity and minimize costs. The Mine Ventilation System is modified to include a new Vent Raise and Variable Pitch Vane-Axial Fan. This addition allows several fan installations underground to be decommissioned. A substantial net savings in installed horse power is achieved. Heating costs associated with underground ventilation air are a significant portion of mine operating costs. Air heating costs are substantially reduced by recovering heat from upcast exhaust air, mine water and compressor cooling circuits. This waste heat is used to supplement propane fired air heating systems for underground ventilation air. An additional benefit is the availability of a heat sink for summer cooling of the compressors. System design, energy savings data and payback calculations are presented.

A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the effects of various kinetic test protocols on sulfate production, NP depletion and time to acidity. Six test protocols were evaluated including standard humidity cells, non-aerated cells, tall cells, shaken cells, simulated precipitation cells, and NP depletion columns. The study indicates that test protocols which disrupt the oxidizing environment, such as extreme wetting and drying cycles, shaking the cells, or the high addition of acidic water will create an unnatural environment that affect the results. Trickle leach and non-aerated test protocols create an oxidizing environment that more closely represents field conditions and are therefore recommended.

Cement production involves the processing of raw materials that contain - Si02, A1203, Fe203, CaO, MgO, LOI (loss of ignition), S03, K20, Na2O, Ti02, P2055 and Cl- to produce the synthetic mineral mixture called "clinker". The use of other additives - sandstone, flyash, iron ore, and clay - is also mandatory in order to achieve the optimum blending requirements of cement. However, the use of these additives needs to be minimized due to their significantly higher costs ($/Ton). This paper presents a mixed integer programming (MIP)-based optimum quarry scheduling algorithm, which is used to generate quarry plans, satisfying geometric and production capacity constraints while providing minimum cost/optimum blend of raw materials mix to a cement plant. The benefits of this new methodology are demonstrated on a case study.

A metallurgical control application can only succeed if the system's lowest common denominator, its instrumentation and regulatory control is implemented and maintained correctly. This paper describes the basics of regulatory control implementation including some practical guidelines for instrumentation installation, operator interface design, loop tuning, and continuous loop performance analysis. Tuning and analysis techniques are illustrated by step-by-step industrial examples. A small investment in basic control pays dividends in better overall plant performance and provides a solid foundation for advanced control efforts such as expert systems.

A study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of large wheel loaders (Caterpillar 994 Class) for use as primary loading equipment in open pit iron-ore operations. Field visits were made to taconite and gold mines that used large wheel loaders. Information was gathered on loader selection rationale; operation and maintenance experience; and production, availability and costs. Brief time studies were conducted to indicate machine performance and utilization. This paper summarizes the field data that was collected including an economic comparison of wheel loaders and cable shovels in an iron-ore application.

Sevim and Wang (1988a) have presented a model for designing haulage systems in underground coal mines. The authors contend that their model uses a heuristic algorithm to optimize various haulage system parameters. In reality, it would be nearly impossible to optimize a haulage system, because mining plans are uncertain and often change with respect to time. Therefore, haulage system design poses both a stochastic and a dynamic design problem, and its optimization appears to be well beyond the scope of heuristic algorithms. In regard to the authors' design model and its practical significance, a number of additional issues warrant further discussion and clarification. These issues include: l) their model's alleged advantage over simulation models, 2) the correctness of their belt network design, 3) the correctness of their bunker design, 4) the necessity of their proposed bunker clearance policies, 5) the correctness of their shaft-bottom bin design, and 6) the

Various techniques used in the removal of metal ions from effluent streams have been reviewed. These techniques include recovery of metals by biological treatment, chelating agents, adsorption, ion- exchange and chemical precipitation. The main thrust of this paper however, is concerned with the removal of cadmium and zinc ions from the solution by adsorption utilizing liquid fluidized beds. The bed particles used were silica of 150x200 mesh. The range of the concentration of these ions studied was 10-3 to 10-5 M. Important variables examined included flow rate, concentration of metal ions and amount of bed particles. A mathematical model describing the concentration profile of metal ions in the axial direction in liquid fluidized beds has been developed. The equation of continuity was solved numerically and the results were used to predict the recovery of metal ions in fluidized beds.

1.1. INTRODUCTION Despite indications of a general economic recovery in the U.S. during the mid-19801s, mine operators have not generally shared in the benefits of these reported better times. Budgets have not rebounded, borrowing is tougher, parent companies' pockets are not as deep as in previous years, and margins are not any better -- if there is any left over at all. Managing capital equipment budgets is always a challenge, and the last five years of stretched equipment lives make these decisions more tenuous. Delays and avoidance of replacements due to tough times inevitably makes those decisions increasingly difficult and usually more expensive The purposes of this paper are to present. a brief refresher outline of the fundamentals of equipment replacement analysis, to suggest a number of papers where analysis methods are explained in greater detail. and to recommend the use of a widespread microcomputer software capability (1-2-3) as the easiest path to a much-needed solution for a very difficult, and usually under-supported management decision problem 2. REPLACEMENT DECISION POLICY Investments in equipment replacements must compete for capital with all other investment alternatives. Capital for replacements of ten represents a greater commitment than do the new projects which a company might handle in a given year. But. sadly, formal policies for standardized analysis of replacements rarely exist, even in major companies. Yet this policy can be very significant in determining the competitiveness of a firm. Whereas many replacement decisions are based on cost minimization, economists and financial analysts agree that wealth maximization or return on investment is the superior criterion. Though the difference may seem slight, agreement on a firm's financial objective is vital. Replacement policy should be straight- forward. have a logical basis, and a proper level of sophistication. There are several reasons to develop a policy for replacement decision-making: [I] 1 - equipment's optimal economic life is nearly always shorter than its physical life; 2 - mine life often exceeds equipment life, so management must face these decisions routinly 3 - replacement capital costs, on an undiscounted basis, can run 25 to 75% of original capital 4 - technological changes may result in a newer machine or system which can operate more efficiently, more safely. or less expensively 5 - estimates should be made consistently in the fundamental areas of life expectancy, availability, utilization. price escalation, taxes 6 - long-term and short-term budgeting without decent data and analytical capability is nearly impossible, or at least ineffective Policy development assumptions which must be considered include: the planning horizon, cost patterns, interest rates, availability of capital, replacement vs. expansion, technology advances.

Improperly designed support systems have led to unplanned roof falls in longwall tailgates. To prevent such falls requires appropriate support and adequately designed support systems. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently developing a standing support design methodology based on the ground reaction curve. To design the support system with this methodology requires a quantitative assessment of the ground and support interaction, which is developed from instrumented test sites installed in longwall tailgates. To compliment and expand the field data results and to optimize the support design, numerical modeling is also conducted. The models are calibrated from the test site data. In the present study, data was obtained from a longwall tailgate in the Illinois basin. The test site was located in the Herrin No. 6 coal seam at a depth of 500 ft. At the site, the immediate roof was a weak shale overlain by a competent limestone. Above the limestone, sandstone formed the intermediate roof. The floor consisted of a weak underclay. In the study, the performance and interaction with the surrounding rock mass of two different standing supports, an engineered crib and a conventional 4-point wood crib were monitored. The two cribs have similar load-displacement characteristics at least through 6 in of displacement. Beyond 6 in, the engineered crib becomes unstable and begins to strain soften and shed load. The measurements and developed ground reaction curves indicated that the tailgate at the mine was a low convergence environment until well inby the face. Because the convergence was well below their capacity, both supports provide more than adequate levels of support to the tailgate. Significant convergence and support loading did not occur until 90 to 100 ft inby the face. The results of this study were also compared with results from similar studies conducted in the Pittsburgh seam to further advance the development of the ?ground reaction curve? based support system design.

The mining industry, in particular the coal industry, has experienced the implementation of some major environmental regulatory programs during the past two decades. Over the coming decade the coal industry will probably experience only "fine tuning" of the regulatory programs they now operate under. The rest of the indus- try, however, appears to be on the verge of coming under a major new regulatory effort by the Environmental Protection Agency. Litigation and resulting court decisions will be the main force driving further changes in the SHCRA (Surface Mine Control and Reclamation Act) regulatory program. These changes are anticipated to be minor in compar- ison to earlier changes. EPA, however, is preparing a regulatory program which may carry as much impact to the rest of the mining industry as SNRA was to coal. Details of this program have yet to be worked out. Changes in the way EPAts Clean Air Program is applied to mining could also significantly impact the mining industry.
