Carbonaceous and metalliferous black shales occur in close proximity to Mercur-type gold deposits in the southern Oquirrh Mountains, Utah. These shale units, the Manning Canyon shale and the Long Trail shale, have undergone regional hydrothermal alteration. Hydrothermal solutions oxidized organic matter and pyrite, replaced shale by hydrothermal phyllosilicates and silica, and replaced fossils by phyllosilicates. The shales are depleted in organic carbon, calcium carbonate, alkali and alkaline earth metals, and enriched in aluminum and hydrogen. Hydrothermal veins containing illite, chlorite, pyrophyllite, kaolinite, Fe-oxides, and sulfides are present throughout the study area.The illite in veins is an ammonium illite that contains up to 2 % NH4 and is correspondingly depleted in K. Correlations among Au, As, Hg, TI, Sc, and rare earth elements indicate that hydrothermal fluids responsible for formation of ammonium illite were gold bearing. K/Ar ages of illite veins and illite-rich, clay-size separates of altered shales indicate hydrothermal activity occurred in the time range 193 to 122 Ma. Several ages from clay-size separates within the Mercur district cluster near 160 Ma. These ages are coeval with thrust faulting recognized to the north and west.

The success of any industrial mineral project requires an accurate forecast of the demand fir the material as well as accurate projections of costs and prices. This paper develops a general method of predicting mineral requirements and applies it to the case of graphite. The basic method is to explain graphite consumption in each of its major uses by the output and manufacturing technology of the using industry. Once these underlying factors are determined, they can he projected to establish future requirements. This forecast is critical to the evaluation of a new source of supply, such as the graphite resources of Upper Michigan.

The past 15 years has .seen a dramatic increase in the use of computers in the mining industry. Sanford (1) has provided a comprehensive listing of available programs by application within the mining industry as a whole. Figure 1 below illustrates some of the primary uses and computer techniques currently in application in surface coal mines. As shown in Figure 1, computers have been applied to virtually every facet of surface mine development and operation. In particular, many programs presently exist to significantly reduce the time and effort required during the, planning and design phase of a surface mine. Close examination of the approach taken to utilize existing programs, however, reveals that in most instances applications have been implemented piecemeal with the result that users must be fairly sophisticated in their knowledge of computer applications.

The transition from centrally planned to market economy affects methods of economic analysis. The models which were used in the past are riot valid presently, however they we're the seed which initialized the development of methods and applications. There is more than twenty years of experience in modeling of coal mining development. The first attempts were devoted to select the moment of mine construction commencement in order to meet planned output. In Poland significant development of such models began in 1986. Within the Central Research and Development Program there has been a continuous development of models. These models from econometric to optimization ones, were a certain sequence which, in accordance with changing economy system, led to the last version of the model. It is the most suitable one for contemporary problems of coal mining in present Polish circumstances.

This paper discusses the results of an investigation carried out in an underground mine to characterize the volatile by-products adsorbed on airborne particulates following the detonation of four common explosives including ANFO. The primary objective of this study was to determine if any organic amine compounds, particularly nitrosamines, and any polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were produced and trapped in the dust that a miner might inhale during the workday. The production of these substances is of great concern because of their suspected carcinogenic nature. The results of the study indicated that a large variety of the by-products are adsorbed on the particulates generated, and thus remain airborne following the detonation of explosives. The major by-products retained by the dust were bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, and aliphatic hydrocarbons with carbon chains ranging from C12 to C28. One explosive, a water gel, produced the polycyclic aromatic compound, trimethylnaphthalene. No nitrosamine compounds were detected.

The declining grades of surface deposits have re-confirmed the need for greater production rates. Large scale production requires increased investments in expensive and sophisticated equipment. The key to successful operations can depend entirely on proper equipment utilisation and in this program of research at the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, University of Queensland, much emphasis has been placed on the analysis and improvement of this aspect of a load-haul-dump operation. For a model to be successfully integrated into a mine engineering function and readily accepted by mine operating personnel, it has to offer more than just results. The concepts used in its design and construction must include sufficient detail to enable engineers to apply it usefully and with confidence.

Deep, stable, unlined space promises secure, efficient, acceptable solutions to several current problems. With truly favorable conditions, it can be economic as well. The basic requirement is sufficient sound, tight rock at required depth. This and unusual surface requirements point to special testing. An objective is to describe conditions for planners, estimators and contracts. A first stage concept study needn't be prolonged but should overlook nothing significant. Although observations and tests on core are considered essential, time and expense can be cut by supplementing then with tests on walls of rotary or percussion holes. In some places initial drilling could be shallow.

A relatively inexpensive and reliable method of using liquid phase tracers to aid in the solution of material balance problems is introduced. The method is of value in situations where one is required to calculate a material balance around a process that has the operating appearance of a "blender" or "splitter" with respect to the available slurry sample data. The paper briefly reviews material balance development and tracer applications in mineral processing, introduces the problem to he addressed, and provides both theoretical and industrial evidence establishing the potential of the method.

1. INTRODUCTION In April 1979, the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued the Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS) on Uranium Milling (NUREG-0511) for public comment. While the GEIS is a broad environmental impact assessment of the U.S. uranium milling industry as a whole, its primary focus is on the issue of uranium mill tailings disposal and long term isolation. In August of 1979, proposed regulations (U.S. Federal Register Notice 44FR50012), incorporating both conclusions of the GEIS and provisions of recent U.S. legislation on uranium mill tailings (Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978--UMTRCA), were also issued for public comment. This paper (1) briefly reviews the major conclusions of the draft GEIS, (2) summarizes the major elements and rationale of the associated, proposed regulations, and (3) reviews some of the major issues raised during the public comment period and changes which the NRC staff expects will be made in finalizing the GEIS and regulations. The risk in summarizing a document of such broad scope and complexity as the GEIS is that the depth of evaluation and the full technical bases for conclusions reached may not be adequately conveyed. Recognizing this, those Sections of the draft GEIS where a more complete discussion of the issues is presented are parenthetically noted in this paper in order to facilitate location of additional background and supporting material. 2. GENERAL CONCLUSIONS In the GEIS, a full range of tailings disposal alternatives was considered. These alternatives ranged from the past practice of doing little or nothing to control tailings, to advanced treatment alternatives such as nitric acid leaching to increase removal of radioactive elements and fixation of tailings in cement or asphalt. Our broad conclusions were: -Any alternative which results in the need for ongoing, active maintenance to assure long term containment, is unacceptable. (12.3.2.1) -Advanced treatment alternatives are unwarranted since they offer uncertain incremental benefits yet involve costs which may be as much as an order of magnitude greater than costs associated with acceptable alternatives. The day after I reached New York, on January 30th, John Ryan of Anaconda told me where they wanted me to go. Late in 1916 the Russian Czar, desperate for money and supplies with which to carry on his unhappy share In the first World War, sent emissaries to the United States to see if our great mining companies might be interested in trying to find mines and to bring them to production in the millions of acres of the Imperial Estates in Russia and Siberia. It looked like a long chance as no one knew whether or where there might be important ore bodies. Even if they found them it might be a hopeless task to equip them under wartime conditions But the American copper companies had plenty of money and they were used to taking risks. They made a supersecret agreement with the Czar's deputies to send an exploring expedition to Russia at once I never learned the names of the other companies but Anaconda was to man- age the venture. Horace Winchell, then the leading mine geologist In the United States, was to be in charge of operations. Charles Janin, an eminent placer and dredge expert, was to study chances for producing gold and platinum. Mining of Molybdenum at Questa, New Mexico has been accomplished by block cave methods since August, 1983. As caving progresses, a periodic geologic evaluation is made of the rock types present in finger raises on the Grizzly Level of the mine. The production maturity of the cave can be monitored by relating this data to geologic cross-sections through the orebody. The draw point mapping program is a simple and effective tool that is used in making draw control decisions at Questa.

This paper describes the application of the Graphics Assisted Under Ground Engineering (GAUGE) software to a 2-layered room and pillar hard rock mine. The graphics- assisted mine modeling and mine planning capabilities of GAUGE are demonstrated. The system uses polygons to model the room and pillar mine design and displays the model in plan view on the graphics screen,. The planning engineer interactively specifies areas to be mined in the medium or long term. The system calculates and accumulates tonnages and grades for the user-specified areas based on the layer being mined and the particular unit operation (drifting, widening or benching).

Lithium-bearing lepidolites from three deposits in the province of Goias, Brazil, were investigated to determine whether there is a correlution between the lithium content of the mineral and the color of lepidolite and associated tourmaline. Such a correlation can be a useful guide to field geologists for outlining high-grade lithium ore zones. It was found that mauve-pink lepidolite associated with pink tour-maline, and brownish lepidolite associated with black tourmaline have high lithium contents, but that the color of lepidolite is not due to lithium. The pink color of lepidolite and tourmaline is likely due to Mn3+, and the brownish tint of lepidolite and black color of tourmaline to Fe3+. Lepidolites appear to be lithium- rich when the lepidolite and associated tourmaline contain relatively high amounts of Mn3+ and/or Fe3+.

Earlier work at Mintek on the development of gold-selective resins culminated in a plant-manufactured batch of the first generation of Minix resin. A subsequent pilot-plant campaign at a South African gold mine identified some problems with that resin. These included lower capacity and selectivity for gold compared with the laboratory prototype, and a slow but progressive loss in capacity as the resin was eluted and reloaded cyclically. These problems were overcome by chemical modification of the resin structure. Examples of these improvements are presented. The commercialization of a new resin for a new metallurgical application presents problems, which are exacerbated by the initial lack of demand for the resin because the process is unfamiliar to the mining industry. Progress in the commercial development of Minix is discussed in this context.

The concept of flying employees in and out of remote mine sites on a regular rotation basis, rather than establishing permanent support communities nearby, has gained increasing acceptance by mine operators, unions and regulatory agencies in Canada. The development of successful fly in/fly out programs and resultant compressed work schedules is dependent on meeting design requirements through comprehensive research of worker profiles to ensure the selection of suitable employees and the implementation of satisfactory working conditions. This paper presents an overview of Canadian mine industry practice with regard to the fly in/fly out mode of operation and compressed work schedules.

The flotation process developed at Falconbridge laboratories utilizes sulphur dioxide and diethylenetriamine (DETA) reagent combination in the depression of pyrrhotite to allow its separation from pentlandite and chalcopyrite. DETA by itself has failed to produce flotation selectivity with samples from plant and pilot plant streams which showed relatively high redox potentials. However, DETA was found to function effectively on laboratory-generated samples under certain conditions. The results of poor depression are in keeping with thermodynamic calculations which indicate that in the presence of sufficient xanthate and DETA, the formation of ferric dihydroxy xanthate and dixanthogen is possible under oxidizing conditions. The use of sulphur dioxide alone has also resulted in a rather poor depression of pyrrhotite. However, the combined use of these reagents has resulted in an efficient and consistent separation of pyrhotite from pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Various aspects of this selective flotation system are presented along with a discussion on possible operating mechanisms.

The US Bureau of Mines con¬ducted research on underground stope leaching of metalliferous ores. Leaching underground would minimize the environmental impact of ore processing on the surface and would maximize minable reserves. An important aspect of this process is the minimization of pregnant solution losses and groundwater contamination by leach solutions. Bulkhead design and construction are important issues for solution control and stope-leaching economics. A reinforced-concrete bulkhead was designed, constructed and tested for solution control in an underground mine near Idaho Springs, CO. This paper presents the bulkhead-design methodology and construction procedure.

ABOUT BENTONITE TUNNELLING Much has been written and many learned papers given on this subject whose generic term is Slurry Tunnelling. This paper is about the particular form of slurry tunnelling known as the Bentonite Tunnelling System. This method. of tunnelling was invented by J.V. Bartlett of consulting engineers, Mott Hay and Anderson in 1964. The general principles are incorporated in British Patent No. 1083322. It was not until the early 1970's that serious experimental work was started to prove the technical feasibility of the process. In the U.K. in 1971 Edmund Nuttall Limited started on an experimental length of 3.8m diameter tunnel at New Cross in London. In Germany at about the same time Wayss and Freytag were starting on a 3.7m diameter collector sewer tunnel in Hamburg. In Japan early slurry tunnelling work was carried out in the 1960's. In the early 1970's a large number of slurry tunnels of various diameters were carried out in that country. This paper is being presented at a time when this system of tunnelling has become an accepted method throughout the developed world. As a result of the work carried out so far there is now a large amount of data existing regarding the effects on the ground in the immediate area of the tunnel, settlement at the surface and the ability of the system to cope with ground varying from clays to coarse gravels and containing large erratics such as granite boulders. The set of discoveries for a mining district or camp is a reflection of the exploration history. In the western Abitibi greenstone belt of Ontario, future exploration can be guided by a study of statistical trends of known gold deposits. In this area simple trends indicate a strong decrease in the contained quantity of gold discovered through time. Much of this decrease is attributed not to falling mining grades but to smaller tonnages of ore. A plot of the largest discovery in each ten year time period suggests that deposit discoverability is following a size-biased sampling model. Cumulative ounces of discovered gold indicate that an asymptotic value has been reached where exploration is not expected to add significantly to known reserves. This is substantiated by a downward trend in the exploration success ratio of the number of new deposits discovered versus the number of new mineral prospects. The set of discovered deposits reflects a non-random sampling process where size- biased modeling suggests that the largest deposits will be discovered early in the exploration effort. It is the exceptionally large deposit contributing to the observed size-biased distribution. Although this pattern is observed for the western Abitibi the model is complicated by recent, large reserve additions that are attributed to the original discovery. There is present in this area a subtle learning process in exploration leading up to the largest discovery. For comparison a learning model was estimated using cumulative size of discovery per unit of time. This model yielded results consistent with the statistical trends and is thought to be a superior forecast of future discoveries in this region.
