This paper describes work carried out to obtain a heat balance in the B3 shaft longwall stope at Blyvooruitzicht gold mine. Recordings were made of the temperature of the air and chilled water entering and leaving the section during three periods, August 1 September 1977, November 1 December 1977 and March 1978. These recordings, together with numerous other measurements were used to determine the rate at which heat was being removed from the section by the various fluids flowing through the section. The rate at which heat was entering the section was then calculated, by considering each source in turn. These two sets of figures made it possible to draw up a heat balance, and also obviously gave vital information on the magnitudes of the various heat sources and on the methods used to remove heat. In general reasonable heat balances were obtained, the errors being in the range -6 per cent to +22 per cent.

The molecular form of aliphatic amines precipitates in alkaline solutions when the amine solubility limit is exceeded and forms a typical colloidal system. The zones of mines precipitation and micellization are defined and it is shown that the appearance of a colloidal system in a certain pH range is a unique feature that makes weak electrolyte type surfactants differ from strong electrolytes. The formation of iono-molecular complexes reported in the literature is shown to be a pre-precipitation phenomenon. The zeta potential - pH curves for minerals and bubbles in the presence of amines in the pH range where the amine forms a colloidal precipitate are entirely determined by the precipitate. The pH dependence of the flotation of certain minerals using amines is discussed in the light of these findings.

Derivatised 2,4-diketopyrimidine groups have been anchored to planar gold surfaces as self¬-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for chemical and photochemical studies. Three derivatives, 5-methyluracil (thymine), 5-trifluoromethyluracil and 5-nitrouracil, were chosen for the specific moiety present at position C-5, which can exert strong or weak inductive effects on the adjacent aromatic ring. The measured acidity constants decrease from 5-methyluracil to 5-nitrouracil as the inductive properties of the group at C-5 position increase. When grafted to the surface the acidity constants increase, albeit still adhering to the expected inductive trend. The functionality also exerts an influence on the surface wetting properties. Surface wettabilities indicate that the orientation of the pyrimidine groups at the surface occurs so that the C-5 position has a direct effect upon the surface chemistry. Upon dimerisation the surface contact angles increase signifi¬cantly. At pH 11 the contact angle changes reflect that the dimer has a higher pKa than the monomer. The monomer surface is deprotonated at this pH while the dimer surface is partially deprotonated, leading to changes in contact angle of up to 22 degrees. Large changes in contact angle were observed for 5-nitrouracil which were independent of surface charge and were appar¬ently due to conformational changes alone. Electrowetting of three fluoropolymer surfaces by electrolyte solutions was studied with the sessile drop method. The electrowetting curve (contact angle/potential) is analogous to the elec¬trocapillary curve (surface tension/potential) and may be described by a combination of the Young and Lippmann equations. We demonstrate that for some specific surfaces a systematic deviation occurs at positive potentials. This departure is attributed to double layer effects, namely the adsorption of hydroxide and halide anions. pH, ionic strength and polymer composi¬tion can all influence electrowetting behaviour.

Brazil is presently among the seven largest gold producing countries in the world. This paper discusses the evolution of gold mining through the history of Brazil. It also gives a general account of the present practices for mining, processing and extraction of gold. Flowsheets of some selected plants are presented. The environmental aspects involved with gold production are also considered.

Recent land ban act has put pressure on industry to decontaminate the waste streams before they could be discharged. However, for both metal and organic contaminated wastes, there are commercial incentives to recover usable resources. Recent technology developments have helped meeting such objectives. This paper reviews developments in treatment technologies for industrial wastes. Major chemical groups used in waste treatment are summarized.

If the economic situation in the Western World evolves on a path similar to that of the past decade, then we Mining Engineers must accept that one of the major cost factors in the production of deep mined coal is going to be that of labour. Whilst not trying to over-simplify matters it does appear that one of the ways of maintaining acceptable coal costs is by obtaining more coal without increasing manpower. One such way could be an increase in the use of the retreat method of mining. The paper theorises and illustrates case studies to show that as the Mining Industry extends the use of Longwall retreat mining systems in coal seams where the risk of spontaneous combustion exists, then the use of bleeder entries should be questioned. In addition to the spontaneous combustion risk, bleeder entry systems where the ventilation flow is not fully controllable cannot be construed as a safe and reliable method of controlling high rates of methane emission. These two major aspects alone should be sufficient ground for Mining Engineers to re-consider the practice of using bleeder entries. An alternative "The Back Return System" appears to offer most of the advantages for controlling the environment, without the disadvantages of the other system.

In, any open pit mine the ability to make accurate production estimations for the shovel-truck system is an important asset. This is true in an operating mine wishing to estimate production under a set of system modifications (i.e. more trucks, fewer loaders, change in roads, etc.), as well as in the pre- mining planning stages of a property. Many different methods have been proposed for solving this problem; some of the methods rely heavily on "rules of thumb" while others are highly mathematical and require access to a high speed digital computer. Analysis of shovel-truck systems with the use of simulation models is a widely accepted technique within the industry. Through the use of such models it is possible to account for much of the inherent variability of the system and thus produce meaningful results. However, simulation studies are expensive. Formulation and setup of the actual simulation model requires a significant commitment of time and energy. In addition, the cost of the necessary computer runs is often of considerable magnitude.

The most important type of potash ores, sylvinite, contains sylvite, halite and a small percentage of insoluble gangue [sulfates (anhydrite), carbonates (dolomite), and clay minerals]. Primary normal long-chain amines are exlusively utilized to float sylvite from halite, but since mines are also adsorbed by insoluble slimes, the process requires prior desliming. This is carried out either by mechanical means, or by flotation of slimes and blocking off the adsorption centers on clays with the use of polyelectrolytes. Fractional crystallization is employed to produce fertilizer grade KC1 from disseminated ores with a high content of slimes. An extender oil is needed in addition to mine to float coarse sylvite fractions. The process is carried out in a saturated brine at mine concentrations exceeding the solubility limit and is strongly affected by temperature fluctuations. All these important features, which make this process differ from a conventional flotation, result from a high electrolyte concentration.

A mathematical model is described for the transfer of hydrophobic compounds from aqueous to an immiscible organic phase using fine bubble aeration; the process otherwise known as "solvent sublation" an adsorptive bubble separation process. The limitations of the model are explored by simulating experimental results both for a batch scale process and a continuous process. The qualitative predictions of the model with respect to the influence of the organic layer (mineral oil) are tested by performing experiments using chloroform and 2,3,6-trichloroanisole as hydrophobic compounds in the aqueous phase. The continuous process is seen to be limited by the requirements of fine bubble generation and the ratio of influent feed rate to air flow rate.

The US economy grew at a rate of 4% in 1994 and the gross domestic product rose to $6.74 trillion. With 261 million people - 605,000 in mining, including petroleum -the United States has l 10 million dwelling units and 200 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing units authorized in 1994 rose 14% to 1.4 million units. New car production rose 11 % to 6.6 million units, while truck and bus production rose 30% to 5.2 million units. The inflation rate was less than 3% and the prime rate of interest averaged 7.15%. The producer price index (1982 = 100) for fuels and related products and power was down 4% to 78, while metals and metal products rose 5% to 125. Chemicals and allied products rose 3% to 132, and non-metallic mineral products rose 3% to 124. The merchandise trade deficit rose 25% to $166 billion. Disorder in the former Soviet Union led to substantial dumping of mineral materials. With vast mineral resources, the former Soviet Union land area totaled 22.4 million km2 (8.6 million sq miles). In comparison, the North Ameri¬can Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) area (United States, Canada and Mexico) totals 21.4 million km2 (8.3 million sq miles).

Froth flotation has been used to improve the recovery of fine coal, for minimizing the sulfur and ash content of clean coal and for the removal of fine coal from recycled or discharged backwater from coal preparation plants. Though froth flotation and allied processes for ores date from the turn of the century, with the first U.S. commercial application in 1911, coal flotation has been introduced into U.S. practice much more slowly. The first European coal flotation plant was started in 1920, and by 1933 Europe had 60 operating plants while the United States had only one plant, newly commissioned. Over the years there has been a steady increase in coal flotation so that today one-third of the 345 U.S. plants employ the process. This report traces U.S. coal flotation practice and technological improvements from early laboratory experiments in 1915 up to today's extensive use of the process.

Polymers of a wide variety of composition are used in coal and mineral beneficiation. Applications include flocculation and coagulation in thickeners, filtration enhancement, mill scale control, dust control, ore leaching improvement, and pond management. The proper chemistry of the polymer is determined by many factors, including the nature of the process, mineral type, and respective performance requirements. This paper provides an overview of the various current applications of polymers in mineral processing, and a description of the applicable polymer chemistries which find utility in these applications. Examples of structure/performance relationships are discussed.

The structure of a mine ventilation network (M.V.N.) can be represented graphically using either the mine plan (map) itself or a number of other types of diagrams. In the U.S., the two most common approaches are the line and the schematic diagrams (see Figures 1 and 2). The purpose of this paper is to introduce another type of diagram, called the canonical diagram (6). The method of M.V.N. representation which uses canonical diagrams is used extensively in Europe, and especially in Poland, where it was developed. The canonical diagram is a noncalibrated topological image of a ventilation system. It gives a simple representation of the ventilation network, allows for the classification of currents within it and enables rapid computer analysis and computation, as well as the representation of the results. It is especially useful in studying and controlling the air flow, and it may be a life saving tool in conducting rescue operations during and after mine fires.

This paper review s several new applications of solvent extraction developed in conjunction with a research project carried out under the AEC Raw Materials Division by the Dow Western Division laboratories during the last two years. A process for recovery of uranium from ores by contacting the solid directly with organic solvent without a prior aqueous leach and a process for uranium recovery by contacting thick, unfiltered leach slurry with the solvent were studied in an attempt to simplify ad reduce the cost of ore treatment procedures. Processes to produce pure UF4 products at the concentrate mills thus eliminating the production and subsequent dissolution of the concentrate were investigated. Since many of the leach liquors contained vanadium as well as uranium, solvent extraction processes for by-product vanadium were also studied.

INTRODUCTION The term, chelate, from the Greek for 'claw,' has its origin in the pincer-like representation of more than one atom of a single ligand bonded to the same metal atom, forming a ring-like structure. Depending on how many attachments exist on the sphere of coordination around the metal ion, ligands are referred to as bidentate, tridentate, tetradentate, pentadentate and hexadentate According to Calvin and Martell (1952) and Somasundaran and Nagaraj (1984), chelating agents must contain suitable functional groups, and their location within the ligand molecule must enable ring formation that is sterically possible. Typical structures that meet these requirements have been given by Fuerstenau and Herrera-Urbina (1988) and are listed in Figure 1. As noted, the functional groups of these reagents contain electron donor atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur. Basic groups, such as amino (-NH,), are those that contain an atom with a lone pair of electrons. Acid groups are those, such as carboxylic (-COOH) which lose a hydrogen ion and coordinate with the metal atom. Examples of each of these types chelating reagents are given in Tables 1-4. The specificity of chelating agents for various metal ions has long been known and was utilized early in the search for new flotation collectors. In 1927, Vivian used ammonium nitrosophenylhydroxylamine as a collector for cassiterite. Holman (1929) tested dimethylglyoxime as a collector for nickel oxide. He also suggested taurin as a collector for oxidized lead ores. DeWitt and von Batchelder (1939) suggested the use of oximes as flotation collectors. Gutzeit (1946) conducted an extensive investigation on the use of chelating agents as collectors and as depressants for gangue minerals. Few, if any, of the non-ionizing radiation health hazards to be found in either surface or underground coal mining are uniquely different because of their being found in the work environment. Hence, they can be considered generally for their bio-effects on the worker when found in the mining work environment. The same may not be said, however, for the lack of non-ionizing radiation and its bio-effects, particularly as it relates to underground coal mining. The term "non-ionizing radiation" refers to various forms of electromagnetic radiation of wavelengths longer than those of ionizing radiation. As the wavelength gets longer the energy of electromagnetic radiation decreases. Therefore, all non-ionizing forms of radiation have less energy than cosmic, gamma, and X-radiation. In order of increasing wavelength, non-ionizing radiation includes ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, microwave, and radiofrequency radiations. The energy frequency and wavelength range of both the ionizing and non-ionizing electromagnetic forces are shown in Table I. To convert the wavelengths of various radiations to Ångström units, one multiplies millimicrons by ten. In a vacuum, all electromagnetic radiation has the same velocity, namely 3 x 1010 centimeters per second. The natural source of radiant energy here on earth is our sun which emits radiation continuously over a wide spectrum. This radiation on average reaching earth ranges from 290 nm in the ultraviolet range to over 2,000 nm in the infrared range with a maximum intensity of about 480 nm in the visual range. You will note this falls into the visible blue wavelength and accounts for our blue sky and blue ocean and deep water effects. We are all familiar with the fact that the passage of solar radiation through the atmosphere to the earth changes the spectrum considerably because the atmosphere absorbs and scatters many of the sun's rays. The ozone in the upper atmosphere absorbs the shorter ultraviolet wavelengths and water vapor absorbs some of the infrared wavelengths. Smoke, dust particles, gas molecules and water droplets scatter the rays, especially those of shorter wavelengths. In addition to the sun, every gas, liquid or solid object at a temperature above absolute 0° radiates energy. Solid objects emit almost continuous spectra. At low temperatures only radiation of the longer wavelengths in the infrared range is emitted, but as the temperature of the object is increased, more and more of the shorter wavelengths are added. This fact is most readily demonstrated by heating a piece of steel. When a piece of steel reaches a temperature of about 1,700° Fahrenheit, it gives off radiation at the red end of the visible spectrum and appears dull red. As the temperature is further increased, the shorter rays are also emitted, until at about 2,100°F, the metal appears white, due to the emission of wavelengths throughout the entire visible range. Gasses, on the other hand, when heated emit radiant energy only at certain wavelengths, which are characteristic of their chemical structure. This latter fact is of importance in underground coal mining as high intensity gas and vapor lamps are becoming more and more utilized for illumination in underground coal mining. The biologic effect of non-ionizing radiation exposure depends upon the type and duration of exposure and on the amount of absorption by the miner. The effects of this radiant energy on the miner fall into four distinct types: (1) the heating effect of infrared radiation, (2) the effect on the eye of visible radiation, (3) the effects of ultraviolet radiation, and (4) the growing potential effects of the misuse of microwave radiation. Each non-ionizing type of radiation will be considered individually. ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION The sun is the major source of ultraviolet radiation, which is of concern in open pit and surface mining at certain seasons and in certain climes necessitating protection for the surface miners under those conditions; nonetheless, there are some man-made sources such as electric arc lights, welding arcs, plasma jets, and special ultraviolet bulbs for illumination underground that demand surveillance in the underground environment to be aware of whether the miners are at risk above the threshold limit values allowable. Since ultraviolet radiation has little penetrating power, the organs that are affected are the skin and the eyes. Ultraviolet radiation is strongly absorbed by nucleic acids and proteins, and the effects in man are largely chemical rather than thermal. Short-term effects on miners include acute changes in the skin. These are of four types: (a) darkening of pigment, (b) erythema (sunburn), (c) increase in pigmentation (tanning) and (d) changes in cell growth. Ultraviolet radiation also causes acute effects on the tissues of the eye. Overexposure can lead to keratitis, inflammation of the cornea, and conjunctivitis. Long-term effects of ultraviolet exposure include an increase in the rate of ageing of the skin with degeneration of skin tissue and a decrease in elasticity. Late effects of ultraviolet on the eye include the development of cataracts. The most serious chronic effect of ultraviolet exposure is skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation effects are increased by some industrial materials and drugs. After exposure to such compounds as cresols, the skin is exceptionally sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. Photosensitivity reactions occur after exposure to a variety of other chemicals and drugs including dyes, phenothiazines, sulfonamides, and sulfanylureas. This paper presents an overview of some of the basic issues related to tunnel construction in the presence of flammable and toxic strata gases. Gas properties and possible sources are outlined for the various gases that are commonly encountered underground. Assessment of potential gas hazards prior to construction is discussed. Measures for mitigating the problem during construction are summarized. This RETC Session on Gassy Ground has been organized by the Underground Technology Research Council (UTRC), Technical Committee on Gassy Tunnels.

The experimental system for mine venti1ation control in Staszic colliery has two - level structure. In the lower - measuring 1evel the existing computer - based early fire detection system has been used completed with a number of additional sensors needed for ventilation parameters monitoring. The higher 1evel is a secondary computer equipped with a suitab1e dedicated software performing data processing according to the control a1gorithm. Direct control of air flow in a selected mine district is performed by means of a remotely controlled automatic regulator. Apart from functional tests of the system and its elements some research work has been carrying out in the colliery based on observations of transient effects caused by changes in air flow distribution.

There are many methods available for the estimation of geologic parameters (Popoff, 1966; Barnes, 1980). In the last decade a new and relatively sophisticated technique using statistical theory has emerged: geostatistical kriging (David, 1977; Journal and Huijbregts, 1978; Rendu, 1978). An interesting property of geostatistical estimation is that when a geologic parameter is estimated for a given volume, not only is the estimate generated but an associated measure of certainty is produced as well. This statistical measure of estimation confidence is called the estimation variance. While the concept of an estimation variance is universally considered to be a good idea, mining engineers and geologists do not currently have the tools to incorporate it into their planning and quantitative analysis. This paper attempts to develop and present some of the necessary tools required to incorporate estimation uncertainty into mine planning. Geologic uncertainty is portrayed as an economic business risk. This risk is objectively characterized, and-the associated cost is quantified. Geologic delineation sampling is viewed in this light as an economic commodity with an associated cost and value. A coal mine planning example is used as a focus in this presentation. The data used is real, though it has been modified to maintain data security and project anonymity.

Recent ore pass failures have underlined the need for improved designs, standards, structural monitoring methods and better hang-up prevention and removal techniques. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating methods to improve safety during the transport of ore in ore passes. Design criteria and hang-up prevention and remediation strategies involve studies of the effects of static and dynamic ore and waste-rock loads on chutes, walls, gates and support structures. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate the response of various ore pass designs to a wide range of ore loading conditions. A full-scale mockup of actual ore pass and chute assemblies was duplicated and tested for load response.
