Relatively simple techniques have been developed which enable the electrochemistry of sulfide minerals to be studied with particles varying in size from above 100 pm to less than 1 pm. Both oxidative and reductive processes have been studied wing the minerals pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite. It has been shown that it is possible to completely oxidise or reduce the minerals during a single voltammetic sweep. The resulting voltammogram produces peaks which are characteristic of each mineral and can be used to qualitatively identify the minerals. In the case of chalcopyrite, it has been demonstrated that the charge involved in the anodic oxidation can be quantitatively related to the amount of copper dissolved. Quantitative information can be obtained using peak fitting techniques. Interesting differences in the behaviour of the minerals in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids have been observed, particularly in the case of pyrite for which a second major peak is obtained which has been attributed to the oxidation of elemental sulfur in the presence of chloride ions. The technique offers the possibility of providing mineralogical information of individual particles based on an electrochemical voltammetic finger print.

A rapid, bench-top analyzer has been developed to determine P2O5 content and CaO/P2O5 ratio in phosphate ores. The analyzer utilizes a portable computer equipped with a frame grabber to measure the reflective intensity (gray level) of phosphate samples placed in front of a television camera. P2O5 content is related to the average gray level of the sample, while CaO/P2O5 ratio is determined from the amount of bright material present. The sensor is currently being used to analyze flotation concentrate samples at Texasgulf's phosphate operation near Aurora, North Carolina. Sensor development along with results from laboratory and in-plant testing are discussed.

Cathodoluminescence microscopy (CLM) is uniquely applicable to the study of carbonatite-related fluorspar ore deposits. The mineralogy of the carbonatites, sodic and potassic fenites, marbles, quartzites and fluorite ores are readily determined and characterized. Calcite, dolomite, apatite and fluorite were deposited dominantly under high-temperature conditions, and they exhibit strong cathodoluminescence (CL). At the Okorusu, Namibia, carbonatite complex and fluorspar mines, three types of carbonatites have been recognized by field mapping and laboratory CLM. The main carbonatite intrusion is fine grained and consists mainly of calcite. A later phase of pegmatitic carbonatite consists of calcite, magnetite, Fe-rich pyroxene, apatite and pyrochlore. Pyroxene carbonatites were recognized mainly through their study by CLM.

The City of Los Angeles will rehabilitate approximately 9 miles of its North Outfall Sewer. This sewer was constructed in the 1920s as an unreinforced concrete semi-elliptical sewer. One of the methods for rehabilitation is to approach the sewer as a pre-excavated tunnel and install pre-cast segmental liners to provide a single pass corrosion resistant, structurally self sufficient project. The estimated cost for this project is $46 million. The project has completed the pre-design study, and the design is now underway.

This paper documents empirical evaluations of geochemical data that was recorded during a seven year pilot scale experiment. The experiment was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of natural soil covers for rehabilitation of coal discard facilities. Ten test cells were constructed using different natural soil cover materials and configurations. Results of the evaluation indicate that, although a pH breakthrough was not recorded for the single layer soil cover cells as was the case with the uncovered cells, single soil covers were not effective in preventing ARD oxidation processes. Multi layered soil covers were found to be able to create anaerobic conditions leading to a reduction in ARD oxidation processes and an improvement in leachate quality.

Between 1991 and 1994, metallurgical residues from a pressure-oxidation autoclave at the Campbell Au-quartz mine at Red Lake, northern Ontario, were neutralized with dolomite-rich flotation tailings and were deposited in a polyethylene-lined disposal area. Mineralogical analysis indicates that most of the As occurs as a crystalline ferric sulfarsenate, and some is associated with Fe oxides and with K-H3O jarosite. Field pore-water geochemical data from 1994 and 1995 showed increases in Fe(II) and As(III) concentrations, suggesting that the sulfarsenate and jarosite are dissolving; none of the discrete As phases included in a thermodynamic database limit dissolved-As concentrations, and these concentrations may continue to increase. These results demonstrate the potential for Fe and As loading through groundwater systems.

Fourteen reagents that are potentially capable of chelating with a metal ion on the surface of the major copper sulfide minerals and pyrite were evaluated for their effectiveness in floating these sulfides. The reagents studied fall into the classes of mercaptobenzole mutations, thiouronium, thionocarbamates, thiourea, imidazole mutations, oximes, hydroxyquinoline and xanthogen formate. The best overall copper sulfide collector was an imidazoline (1-Hydoxyethyl - 2-Heptadecenyl), but it also proved to be an excellent collector for pyrite. Its potency as a pyrite collector can be reduced by structural alteration, but at some loss in its collecting power for the copper sulfides. The effectiveness of many of these potential collectors can be changed by minor alterations to the collector molecule and, to a lesser extent, by pH adjustment. The general order of mineral floatability with these reagents is chalcopyrite = chalcocite > covellite =bornite >> pyrite. The flotation of malachite is generally similar to that of the copper sulfides, indicating the special effectiveness of copper in the crystal lattice for collector attachment.

Risk can generally be defined as the possibility or chance of a loss corresponding to uncertainty. Analysis is the process for examining the components and relationships of a complex system in order to determine the impacts of its variables. Risk analysis is therefore a course of action taken to analyze multiple variables of a system that is subject to speculative outcome. When risk analysis is applied to mine development, it becomes the means for assessing and measuring those parameters that contribute to economic viability. Mining can be a risky business. It is composed of an assortment of factors that contribute to its financial outcome. Of these factors, the most consequential output is the net present value (NPV). Applying risk analysis in mine development can identify those factors having the most significant impacts and applying limits to those impacts. Mathematical computer modeling using Monte Carlo techniques is available and can be customized to suit specific mine development ventures. Essentially, those parameters that are not fixed values can have input variability. Rationally deduced engineering estimates should be the basis for determining the initial values applied as inputs in the models. Risk analysis therefore provides the user a means to identify, rationalize and assess the risks in mine development in an informed, calculated, and unbiased format for making economic decisions.

A test to characterize the amount of gravity-recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given and possible uses are discussed. The overall database, which includes 68complete tests, is presented. The ore samples treated had an average GRG content of 63% of the total gold in the sample, with a standard deviation of 20% and a range of 3% to 97%. Both the F8(, of gold and the GRG content at a grind of 100% finer than 850 pm correlate well with the overall GRG content (at 80%finer than 75 pm). The primary use of the test is to determine whether gravity recovery should be used and how. Results can also be used to predict gravity recovery, as many of the ores tested are from plants employing gravity recovery. Gravity-circuit simulation can be used to refine recovery estimates or for optimization studies.

"Temporary mechanical ventilation is one of the fundamental requirements in guaranteeing a healthy atmosphere in underground construction works in order to protect the health of persons working on the site. It is therefore essential to conceive a system which meets the requirements of the whole of the worksite and for all phases of work which takes into account all aspects pertaining to its design, dimensioning, justification, installation, maintenance and validation. In doing so, the ventilation design and the selected apparatus to be installed shall meet with the degree of health protection and the quality of air of the worksite as defined by the legislation in force in France, through limiting the concentration of the different pollutants associated with the site activities. Consequently, when presenting a mechanical ventilation project, all of the participating parties and especially the contractor make a commitment to guarantee sufficient volumes (or airflow rates) of fresh (non-polluted and oxygenated) air and extracted (polluted) air in order to meet these limitations and maintain them in all conceivable site configurations. This article sets out the most important aspects of the implementation of a ventilation project from the initial design stage through to its application, discussing French legislation, ventilation principles, calculations and techniques with regards to underground construction sites. BASICS OF VENTILATION Mechanical ventilation studies are concerned with all of the site workstations and work phases which are sources of pollution and apply to all zones of the underground worksite with the goal of maintaining the concentration or composition of this pollution below the permitted levels and comply with the following three basic principles which are complementary to one another without being in contradiction. •,The first principle consists in eliminating or limiting as much as possible the emission of any polluting, irritant, or dangerous substances, by specifying appropriate construction techniques and equipment (use of electric motors, combustion engine equipment: filters, tanks, catalyzers, use of less polluting explosives, damping down dust with water or wetting products, damping down and diluting certain gases using water mists). •,The second principle is designed to capture residual polluting substances emitted close to the source in order to prevent them from spreading into the worksite atmosphere (extraction ventilation with ducting up to the source – upstream of the extractor fan – and use of downstream filters before expelling the polluted air to the exterior). •,The third principle involves accompanying the capture of the pollutants with additional blowing ventilation specific treatment of substances dissipated by and distant from the source of pollution (acceleration of the drift air flow in order to confine dust and better capture it, supply ventilation with ducting in order to dilute the gases emitted and discharge them to the exterior)."

Of the 28 accident/injury classifications listed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, handling materials is second only to roof falls in terms of generating the highest number of reportable accidents in active underground coal mines. Two materials-handling activities that cause numerous injuries each year are the categories of ‘handling supplies or material, load and unload’ and ‘moving power cables.’ Mechanization and mine worker activity training are two methods that can aid in preventing these injuries. This paper describes three mechanical methods – the mobile manipulator, the in-mine hoist, and a cable-handling system - being developed and tested at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Two of the devices are specifically designed for loading, unloading, and moving supplies and materials, and the third device is for handling trailing cables in the confined spaces of coal mines. Also described are safety solutions developed for underground coal mines geared to showing miners safe and unsafe ways of performing various materials-handling tasks.

The effects of postmining land use planning are addressed in this paper. These effects may include savings in reclamation costs and increased value of reclaimed land. However, this may result in greater planning costs and possible delays in production. Therefore, an economic analysis was undertaken in an effort to determine the importance of each potential result and to quantify the overall economic impact of postmining land use planning. A discounted cash flow analysis was performed using a surface mine cost model to analyze the sensitivity of selling price to changes in various postmining land use planning parameters. As a result of this analysis, it was determined that the profitability of a project is most sensitive to delays in production, particularly if the delay occurs after major investments have been made. Many methods have been proposed for evaluating postmining land use alternatives (Sweigard and Ramani, 1981). Both quantitative methods, such as benefit-cost analysis (Brock and Brooks, 1968), and nonquantitative methods have been proposed. The application of one specific analytical method is pursued in this paper.

In the course of the last decade, the concept of sustainability has turned from a catchword into a vision - a vision to which politics and industry feel increasingly committed. In terms of the energy industry, the key criteria for sustainable development are supply security, economic efficiency and social responsibility. Coal is able to meet all these criteria if it is produced in conformity with high safety standards through the use of modern mining technology and converted into electricity with the aid of environmentally friendly methods. Among the fossil energy resources, coal will, according to the vast majority of global energy scenarios, continue to be the most important input energy in power generation for the foreseeable future. Coal is therefore today, and will in future continue to be, an important element in ensuring sustainable energy and raw material supply, worldwide, in Europe and also in Germany.

To provide basic information on the processes occurring during in situ leaching, the US Bureau of Mines developed a geologic characterization research program. This includes laboratory experiments wing leaching apparatus that can accommodate whole core samples. Whole core experiments result in a higher proportion of ore mineral contact by the leach solution than packed column experiments. They also allow for the assessment of permeability changes taking place as the result of mineral dissolution, precipitation, and clay swelling within the flow channels of the rock. The leaching apparatus developed can be wed for either constant-pressure or constant- flow rate experiments and allows for the control of flow rate, pressure, and temperature during the experiments. Details of the experimental apparatus are presented, as well as preliminary results from the first series of experiments on an oxide copper ore from the Casa Grade, AZ area.

Decisions affecting ground control design require detailed knowledge of roof rock geology. This is especially true when weak roof materials and anomalies create hazardous conditions and. if not properly supported, result in roof falls. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a system to evaluate geological conditions by using a roof drill that will provide an estimate of the compressive strength of the roof rock in real time. Through the use of sensors and a microcomputer on the roof drill critical drilling parameters can be interpreted and analyzed almost instantaneously, making it possible to inform an operator of hazardous roof conditions such as voids and changes in strata during the drilling process. Geotechnical data can be downloaded to a portable semiconductor memory device, which is brought to the surface so that data can be directly accessed with a personal computer for further analysis. Results from field tests are presented.

Kelsey Lake kimberlites are a cluster of eight diamondiferous pipes that occur in the northern State Line kimber lite district of the Colorado-Wyo¬ming diamond province (Coopersmith 1991, 1993) (Fig. 1). This is located at the southern margin of the Wyoming Archean province. Two relatively large pipes and a few smaller bodies define the cluster (Fig. 2). The Kelsey Lake kimberlite cluster has been developed as the first diamond mine in the United States. The cluster was discovered in 1987. Full-scale production began in the spring of 1996. Mining has produced gem-quality diamonds up to 28.3 carats in size. The 30 State Line kimberlites, intruded about 390 million years ago into Proterozoic crystalline rocks, were presumed to be underlain by Archean basement of the Wyoming Province. Nearly all the kimberlite pipes contain diamond but only the Kelsey Lake pipes are economic. The Kelsey Lake kimberlites contain predominately diatreme facies kimberlite, with minor hypabyssal and crater facies rocks locally occurring. Alteration and weathering of the kimberlites is extensive. Petrologic studies indicated an underlying lithosphere that has a largely Proterozoic signature and shows evidence of deep melt and metasomatic events. Current development has concentrated on the two largest pipes. These have been bulk-sampled after geological study (1987) identified the presence of small diamonds and mineral chemistry indicating favorable diamond conditions. A 10-t/hr (11-stph) rotary pan plant was established in 1992 to process thousands of tons of bulk-sample material. Grades and gem-quality diamonds to 14.2 carats in size were recovered. Early in 1995, it was decided to move from evaluation to commercial mining. Production began in early 1996. A 195-t/hr (215-stph) rotary pan plant was built. A water supply system and tailings disposal have also been incorporated. The project straddles the Colorado/Wyoming border. Existing mining permits were amended to incorporate the increased scale and new plant facility. The permits for this project included the following: Colorado mining permit, Wyoming dozing permit, Corps of Engineers Section 404, Colorado NPDES, Wyoming NPDES, Storm water Management Plan, Air Pollution Emission Notice, various Colorado and Wyoming State Engineer and well permits, Substitute Water Sup¬ply Plan, Larimer County Special Use Review, and US Forest Service road use permits. The temporary destruction of a wetlands area was a sensitive issue. It has been addressed through the Clean Water Act Section 404 permit administered by the US Corps of Engineers. This use will be mitigated by creating new, self-sustaining wetlands in the immediate drainage system. A comprehensive and bonded reclamation plan is incorporated in the permits. Diamond mining and ore processing is environmentally benign. No chemicals are used in processing the diamonds. The plant is a water wash facility. The kimberlite ore is inert, as is the granite wall rock. The exposure of the ore body and the subsequent ore processing and waste rock and tailings containments pose no threat of release, leaching or dispersion of any detrimental elements. There is no acid-forming waste. Even a prolonged acid rain environment will not produce a harmful leachate. Slimes containment and clarification ponds will prevent unacceptable levels of suspended solids in water discharge. Federal regulations require that methane liberated at the face be diluted and removed to maintain methane gas concentrations below 1pct (CFR) in working places and intake air courses. The delivery and distribution of intake air at the face is critical for effective face ventilation. Improved techniques for monitoring the movement of intake air to the face are needed. A test system was developed and a computer program written for using a three-axis ultrasonic anemometer to measure airflow in a simulated mine entry. Results of tests conducted in the entry showed that the anemometer is a valuable tool for measuring mine airflow conditions near the face.

The Study concerns the estimation of fair market value (FMV) of non-producing mineral rights. Two approaches to value are used and the values determined by each are compared. The Study area environment is unusual. The tectonics is visible on surface rocks throughout much of the study area. The effect on mineral values in the exposed areas has been compared to areas where the tectonics is not visible.

The geology of Wyoming has been compared to some of the richest precious metal producing regions of the world including South Africa, Western Australia, and the Superior Province of Canada. These areas are all underlain by ancient cratons that contain some of the oldest rocks on the surface of the earth. But unlike the other cratons, the Wyoming craton (also termed the Wyoming Province) has been greatly modified by Laramide tectonics which thrust slices of the ancient craton through younger Phanerozoic sedimentary rocks. Unfortunately, the nature of the Laramide tectonics left vast regions of the craton at the bottom of the Tertiary basins unavailable to direct examination, but the exposed slices in the mountain cores contain some of the best exposures of Precambrian rock in the world. The cores of these uplifts contain extensive regions of relatively unmineralized gneiss and granite that include scattered fragmented supracrustal belts formed of metamorphosed volcanic, plutonic, and sedimentary rock. Some of these supracrustal belts exhibit similarities to the gold- and nickel- rich terranes of Western Australia. Yet these areas remain incompletely explored. Archean (> 2.5 Ga) gold deposits within the Wyoming craton are primarily confined to greenstone belts and related terranes. These supracrustal belts include relatively narrow vein and shear zone deposits with strike lengths of tens of feet to more than a mile. Some exceptional deposits possess widths of greater than 15 feet to possibly as much as 300 feet, but the majority have widths of± 5 feet. These belts include Cu, Ag, W, Fe, and Cr mineralization, asbestos and pegmatites, and anomalous Ni and Sri in addition to gold. The Proterozoic terrane (<2.5 Ga) exposed in the cores of mountain ranges in southeastern Wyoming includes a thick miogeosynclinal metasedimentary succession which unconformably lies on the Archean craton. These metasedimentary rocks are separated from a predominantly metavolcanic terrane to the south by a major Precambrian suture, or shear zone. The metasedimentary rocks north of the shear include quartzite-hosted stratabound Cu-Ag-Au deposits, Au-Ag veins, and Witwatersrand-type metaconglomerates with isolated gold anomalies. The suture includes scattered base and precious metal deposits in shear zone cataclastics. South of the shear zone, the metavolcanic terrane includes scattered volcanogenic Zn-Cu-Ag massive sulfide deposits, at least one Cu-Au porphyry, and two large layered mafic complexes. The northern edge of one of these layered intrusives yielded some platinum and palladium to miners at the beginning of the 20th century. Phanerozoic sediments host many precious metal anomalies. Some Au-REE anomalies occur in Cambrian conglomerates. Ag-Cu-Zn stratabound deposits are found in bleached Jurassic redbeds in the Overthrust Belt of western Wyoming. The broad Wyoming basins include many enigmatic gold occurrences and anomalies that can only partially be explained by detrital transport in fluvial systems. Many of these anomalies were probably geochemically transported and precipitated. Rocks of Late Cretaceous age along the flanks of the uplifts have numerous black sand deposits. These paleobeach placers contain concentrations of detrital heavy minerals with anomalous titanium, rare earths, and in some cases gold. Gigantic base and precious metal deposits are associated with scattered composite intrusives in the Absaroka Mountains in northwestern Wyoming. This deeply incised volcanic plateau includes several Tertiary age copper porphyry deposits with significant Cu, Mo, Ti, Pb, Zn, Au, and Ag resources that rival the porphyry districts of the Basin and Range Province. In the Black Hills of northeastern Wyoming, disseminated Au-Th-REE mineralization is found in association with fenitized alkalic igneous rock. In addition to disseminated mineralization-scattered gold, fluorite, rare earth and copper veins; lead, zinc, and silver replacement lodes; and tin pegmatites are found in this region.

The successful exploration for Austin Taylor and Gen. McRae from 1931 to 1940 obscured the fact that I was reaching a period of transition. This was true both in personal and business life. It was probably fortunate that I did not realize how great a change must come after I passed the age of 50. In the personal life of our family the change came when both our children left home to go to school or college. This made home a different place and, because of the absence of the children, Dorothy could devote much of her time and attention to the art she loved so well. She could spend long periods in New York, the center of the nation&apos;s art life. Vacations at Tahoe and long pleasure trips made the separation from the children less disturbing but it could never again be the same as it had been in the first 20 years of our marriage. The change In my business life was just as complete, though a little more gradual. While work for Bralorne and General McRae made the "bite" of the Great Depression less painful for us than it was for most consultants and their families, the fact that I was getting older made a new sort of work inevitable. I was 50 years old and the total grew rapidly. Planes and automobiles that made travel easier even in the wilds of Alaska and northern Canada still made it possible for me to look at new prospects, but increasingly often I was exhausted at the end of a day&apos;s climb and, if the nature of my work did not change there would soon be no more work. Fortunately work of a new sort came a little at a time. As I became a director of Bralorne and president of its American subsidiaries I had to take on more administrative work, and success of these operations made others want to employ me to help direct policy and value mines. I was also asked to arbitrate contests between mines when technical disagreements were so great that judges or juries could obviously not understand them My consulting for government agencies helped to
