Introduction Ball mills are lined drums, either cylindrical in shape or modified cylinders that have either one or both ends of the shell, consisting of conical sections, that rotate about the horizontal axis. Fig. I I shows a cylindrical mill, Fig. 12 a conical ball mill, and Fig. 13 a Tricone ball mill (Hardinge tradename). Steel or iron grinding media, generally in the shape of spheres, are used to grind the ore to the specified product size. In order to obtain more contact area for grinding and to simulate the shape of worn balls, balls have been made with two concave surfaces diametrically opposite each other. Some concentra¬tors, such as Erie Mining Co., have used slugs cut from worn and broken rods to supplement the balls in ball mills and save money otherwise lost as rod scrap. Cylindrical and conical shapes have been tried instead of balls, but balls remain as the most common shape grinding media used in ball mills. Ball mills were a logical development from the earlier pebble mills that used hard natural pebbles such as flint pebbles or sized ore pebbles (obtained from the ore itself) as grinding media. In the early 1900s36 it was found that when cast iron or cast steel balls were used in place of flint or ore pebbles, the mills drew more power and gave greater production capacity. Advances in technology have resulted in the manufacture of ball mills up to 18 ft diam inside shell, drawing up to 8,000 hp. Ball mills are employed to grind ores, especially the more abrasive ores, to finer sizes than can be produced economically in other size¬reduction machines such as roll crushers, hammer mills, and impactors. Ores can be ground dry-dry grinding-or in a slurry-wet grinding-using ball mills. Dry grinding nominally refers to less than I %v moisture by weight. If the moisture content increases by several percent, dry grinding capacity is significantly reduced as shown in Table 17. The usual range of solids content in wet ball-mill slurries is from 65 to 80% by weight. Wet grinding is used to prepare the feed material for unit opera¬tions such as flotation, magnetic separation, gravity concentration, and leaching that require a slurry of liberated valuable mineral and unwanted gangue particles. Dry grinding" is employed to produce feed for agglomeration, pelletizing, and pyrometallurgy processes that require feed that is dry or nearly so and for finely ground industrial mineral products used in the dry state. Dry grinding is also used when minerals cannot be dewatered economically to the required moisture level or when the ground product reacts unfavorably with liquids. For example, cement clinker must be ground dry. Dry grinding requires about 30% more power than wet grinding for comparable size reduction .28 The total power required in a dry¬grinding ball-mill plant including drying may be double that required for a wet-grinding plant. Grinding-media and liner consumption in dry grinding reported as pounds of metal consumed per kilowatt-hour per ton of ore" is 10-20% of that used in wet grinding. The Wabush pellet plant, Point Noire, Que.3o reported ball consumption dropped from 6.3 lb per ton of ore ground to 2.5 lb per ton of ore ground when they converted from wet to dry grinding, and a 30% increase in power consumption. A number of comparisons made on wet and dry grinding of cement raw materials show metal consumption in dry grinding to be 10% of that in wet grinding. The capital costs for wet grinding are generally lower than for dry grinding. When thickening and filtering of the wet-ground product are required, dry grinding may have a lower capital cost. With open-circuit grinding the ball-mill discharge passes directly to the next processing step without being screened or classified and no fraction is returned to the ball mill (Fig. 14). In closed-circuit grinding the ground material, undersize, in the ball-mill discharge is removed either using a screen or a classifier with the oversize being returned to the mill for additional size reduction (Fig. 15). The over¬size material that is returned to the ball mill is called the circulating load. Open-circuit ball-mill grinding requires more power than closed¬-circuit grinding for products containing similar amounts of top-size material. The less the amount of oversize allowed in the product, the longer the ore must remain in the ball mill when grinding in open circuit. This increases the production of extreme fines and thus the consumption of more power. The power required for open-circuit ball-mill grinding can be estimated using the multipliers listed in Table 18 and knowing the power required for closed-circuit grinding to yield the desired product particle size. For example, assuming the desired grind size is 90% passing some specific top size, open-¬circuit grinding would require 1.40 times the power to achieve similar results as closed-circuit grinding.

Allis Mineral Systems' Grate- Kiln system can economically convert low-grade iron ore into high- grade iron-ore pellets suitable as feed material for blast furnaces for making steel. These pellets can also be fed to a direct reduction process for making sponge iron. The Grate- Car system combines the company's [ ] Grate-Kiln system for iron-ore pelletizing and Accar system for iron- ore reduction. The Grate-Car system consists of a traveling grate, a ported rotary kiln and a rotary cooler that are coupled in series. This system eliminates the pelletizing plant's rotary kiln and annular cooler. It reduces the need for some auxiliary equipment. This results in lower capital cost and lower energy consumption. The traveling grate provides that static bed handling necessary for heat hardening pellets before their discharge into the kiln. The ported kiln provides the reducing atmosphere with a more precise means of controlling the kiln axial temperature profile than conventional rotary kilns.

INTRODUCTION The tailings, or solid waste, remaining after uranium has been extracted from an ore and the liquid wastes associated with it contain both radioactive and other substances which, if released to the environment, may have a detrimental impact on man and his environment. Although the radioactivity of the waste is of natural origin, the mining and milling process results in bringing the radioactive ore to the surface, changing its chemical and physical form, increasing its mobility and, therefore, enhancing the potential radiological exposure to man. Exposure to radionuclides released from a tailings impoundment, while small as applied to any one generation, can be made large by counting far into the future, large enough to be the dominant source of exposure from the nuclear fuel cycle, Cunningham (1978). Increasingly it is being found that where the prime concern was initially the radionuclide releases, the release of other pollutants and contaminants may be of equal or greater concern. While there is a definite benefit, at least to present generations, resulting from the recovery of uranium, current and long-term concerns require that consequential present and future releases be kept as low as is reasonably achievable. Design practice, to minimize this release, is currently passing through a technical revolution; precipitated by public and institutional concerns. New techniques and methods are, therefore, being actively sought and continuously implemented. Because of the complexity of the pollutant release mechanisms and the sitespecific nature of each impoundment site and tailings product, a wide variety of site selection and design options have been implemented or considered. It is often possible to design a number of satisfactory tailings disposal schemes which differ widely in nature and cost. This paper outlines the principal areas in which options are available and discusses some of these options. Both operating and post-decommissioning conditions are consi-

Zinc-lead ores of the Pine Point District, Northwest Territories, Canada, are hosted in paleokarst cavities within a Middle Devonian carbonate barrier complex. Of the nearly 100 deposits found, most are irregularly distributed along two main regional stratigraphically controlled trends. The ores, which occur predominantly as open space filling, form deposits most of which average one million tonnes in size with an average grade of 10% combined zinc plus lead. Geological features related to karsting control not only distribution of deposits but also their shape, size and grade. The higher grade ore in these deposits generally occurs in a relatively small core area. Consequently, accuracy of reserve estimation is dependent on drill-hole density and understanding of karst geometry. Several case examples will be reviewed to demonstrate the relationship between shape, size and grade of deposit, geological reserves and drill-hole density, along with a discussion of geological ore reserve estimation methods.

In contrast to pyrometallurgy's six thousand year history in the production of metals, that of hydrometallurgy is of relatively recent origin. The earliest reference to it at all was in the 16th century, with the first applications to copper in the 17th and 18th. In the 19th century, increased demands for pure metal resulted in development of electrolytic refining, and early in this century electrowinning. The rapid growth in wpper production in the present century, paricularly in the United States and Chile, stimulated the development of new technology for leaching, and for the recovery of copper from leach solutions. Solvent extraction has become a major factor during the past quarter century by permitting novel leaching technology which produces dilute or complex solutions. In addition, solvents other than sulphuric acid, and chemical methods for precipitating copper metal are now of increasing interest. These are trends which should grow in importance in the future with the need to process lower grade and more complex materials. The evolution of copper hydrometallurgy is reviewed briefly and key factors in recent major developments are presented with details of specific operations and with trends for the future indicated. The relative importance of copper hydrometallurgy is compared to that of pyrometallurgy in the light of probable changes in ore supplies and character.

Thirteen kinetic models that mathematically describe the flotation process have been statistically evaluated for the flotation of copper, lead and zinc ores. Comparisons have been made for a variety of circuits involving roughing, cleaning, scavenging and regrind followed by cleaning. Variations in collectors, frothers, depressants and activators have been considered. Based on the statistical criteria used for the evaluation, and the reagent, circuit and ore variations studied, the most reliable flotation models have been identified and subsequently used to characterize the metallurgical results.

Batch flotation data in an equilibrium cell show that beneficiation improves with froth drainage. The limiting lamella thickness in a well- drained 3-phase coal froth appears to be determined for ultra-fine particles (-45µm) by the d90 particle size. The froth stability is considered to depend on the existence of a very thin liquid film between the outer surfaces of the d90 particles and the bounding bubble interfaces of the lamella in which the particle is held. The dependence of the coalescence rate of bubbles in these froths on the residual surfactant concentration in the lamella liquid is then consistent with stability analyses for two-phase foams.

INTRODUCTION A great deal more is involved in a sampling effort directed at a placer deposit than physically capturing a quantity of representative material and extracting the desired component. The distribution and dimensions of the sample sites must be chosen after consideration has been given to the type of deposit and the concentrating mechanism. Interpretation of the sampling results is likewise an extremely important part of the sampling program. SAMPLE SPACING The interpretation begins with the selection and design of the sampling program. A decision regarding genesis of the deposits and their geometry must be made in order to select a suitable technique and sampling pattern. Deposits differing genetically will have differing distributions and degrees of concentration.

The one-dimensional mathematical model of unsteady-state heat conduct ion through multilayer (wall and floor of airway consist of several layers of material and rock) and two-surface (dry and wet surfaces) airway wall and airway floor with convective heat and moisture transfer between their surfaces and mine air with time dependent changes of temperature and humidity has been developed on the basis of introduction of acceptable simplifications of description of heat and moisture transfer between rock mass and mine air. The analytical solutions for calculation of the surface temperature of any type of surface of airway wall/floor and for calculation of water vapour pressure near the wet surfaces at given time are obtained by means of the model presented. These solutions are illustrated for the case of general harmonic course of air temperature and humidity. Balance of heat and moisture transfer between surfaces of airway wall and floor and mine air is solved by an iterative method in the partial sections of airway. The temperature and the humidity of mine air on the outlet of each partial section of airway at given time are its resolutions and they are the input data for following partial section. By this way it is possible to solve complicated dynamic changes of mine air temperature and humidity in an air way system by relatively simple mathematical apparat.

An overland belt conveyor system is installed for only one reason to save money. It must pay its way on a ton-mile basis over a stated period of time, and do so in competition with other forms of transportation. Such a system with its economies has recently been installed at Simco-Peabody's mine near Coshocton, Ohio by Link-Belt Company. Three miles in length, this system carries coal from open pit and underground mining facilities to the Conesville Power Plant of Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric Company. The coal was formerly trucked from the mine direct to the power plant; but over the years the mining operations have moved progressively farther and farther from the plant, making the over-the-road hauling distance correspondingly greater. Simco-Peabody has mining operations over a considerable area just east of the Conesville Station. The majority of the coal is recovered by conventional strip mining. Some underground mining` is performed by the high wall method.

Abrasives are substances both natural and synthetic that are used to grind, polish, abrade, scour, clean, or otherwise remove solid material usually by rubbing action (as in a grinding wheel), but also by impact (pressure blasting). Facts about the discovery, early use, adaptation, and development of abrasives prior to the 20th century are few. From the sparse, earliest information that is available, it would appear that the science of abrasives began when, to fashion his tools, man began to select certain kinds of rocks in preference to others because of their peculiar properties. There is evidence that stones were sawed by some sort of grinding machine as early as 4000 BC in Egypt. The real expansion of abrasives use coincided with the beginning of metallurgy in the Middle East around 2000 BC. The earliest confirmed use of abrasives for grinding metal comes from a steel dagger found along with a sharpening stone which was dated at about 1500 BC. Natural and manufactured abrasive substances play an important role in fashioning and finishing numerous products with a wide variety of end-use applications. The mining and preparation of crude, natural abrasives for their markets and the manufacture of synthetic and other abrasive materials contribute significantly to the US economy (Table 1). In addition, just as sawing to specific dimensions enhanced the value of the Egyptian stone, the use of abrasives in fabrication of modem products, and the addition of abrasives to others, add value. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS The most important physical properties of materials that qualify as abrasives are hardness, toughness (or rigidity), grain shape and size, character of fracture (or cleavage), and purity (or uniformity). To fabricate bonded abrasive products such as grinding wheels, additional considerations include stability under high heat and bonding characteristics of grain surfaces. The economic factors of cost and availability are always important. No one singular property is paramount for any use. For some applications extreme hardness and toughness are needed, as in diamonds for drill bits. For other uses, factors of greatest importance are hardness and ability to break down slowly and, in the process, develop fresh cutting edges when grains become worn. In garnet sandpaper, for example, highly cleavable, friable, or extremely tough grains are not desirable. For other uses, extreme hardness may be objectionable. Abrasives for dentifrices and for glass-cleaning soaps are cases in point. For the most efficient uses in more critical applications, different types of abrasives are rarely completely interchangeable. While crushed quartz and garnet are both used in sandpaper, the two abrasives are not at all interchangeable in their applications. In the final analysis, the choice of a high-grade abrasive depends upon the quality and quantity of work performed by the abrasive per unit of cost. Initial cost of an artificial abrasive may be much greater than that of a natural abrasive, but the artificial mineral may do so much better work and do it so much faster that the ultimate cost is less. It is for this reason that artificial abrasives have largely replaced natural abrasives.

Nearly every community in the United States is dependent on aggregate (sand, gravel, and crushed stone) resources to build and maintain its infrastructure. Unfortunately, developing aggregate resources to meet societal needs causes environmental impacts. Most environmental impacts associated with aggregate mining are benign. Extracting aggregate seldom produces acid mine drainage or other toxic effects commonly associated with mining of metallic or energy resources. The most obvious environmental impact of aggregate mining is the conversion of land use, most likely from undeveloped or agricultural land use, to a hole in the ground. This major impact is accompanied by loss of habitat, noise, dust, blasting effects, erosion, sedimentation, and changes to the visual scene. Some of the impacts are short-lived, and most are easy to predict and easy to observe. Most impacts can be controlled, mitigated, or kept at tolerable levels and can be restricted to the immediate vicinity of the aggregate operation by employing responsible operating practices and available technology. The intensity of environmental impacts generated as a result of mining are determined in large part by the geologic characteristics of aggregate deposits (geomorphology, geometry, and physical and chemical properties). Mining deposits that are too thin, or contain too much unsuitable material, results in the generation of excessively large mined areas and large amounts of waste material. Mining aggregate can lead to serious environmental impacts in some situations. Some geologic environments such as active stream channels, slide-prone areas, and karst terrain are dynamic and respond rapidly to outside stimuli including aggregate mining. Some geomorphic areas and (or) ecosystems underlain with aggregate serve as habitat for rare or endangered species. Similarly, some geomorphic features are themselves rare examples of geologic phenomena or processes. Mining aggregate might be acceptable in some of these areas, but should be conducted only after careful consideration, and then only with extreme prudence. Failure to do so can lead to serious, long-lasting, and irreversible environmental consequences, either in the vicinity of the site or at locations distant from the site. Environmental impacts caused by irresponsible aggregate mining can compromise mining in an entire region.

The term bentonite was first proposed in 1898 by Knight, a year after he had named this clay taylorite, because taylorite had been previously used for another mineral. The name taylorite was after the Taylor ranch, the site of the first mine, near Rock River, WY, and the name bentonite is from the Benton Shale in which the clay was thought at that time to occur. The Benton Shale was, in turn, named after Fort Benton, MT, located more than 640 km miles north of Rock River. Early in the 20th century, several geologists recognized that bentonite, mainly in beds in Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks, originated from transported volcanic materials. This recognition led to definitions based on origin, the one most widely quoted and generally accepted by geologists is the following definition by Ross and Shannon (1926): "Bentonite is a rock composed essentially of a crystalline clay-like mineral formed by devitrification and the accompanying chemical alteration of a glassy igneous material, usually a tuff or volcanic ash; and it often contains variable proportions of accessory crystal grains that were originally phenocrysts in the volcanic glass. These are feldspar (commonly orthoclase and oligoclase), biotite, quartz, pyroxenes, zircon, and various other minerals typical of volcanic rocks. The characteristic clay-like mineral has a micaceous habit and facile cleavage, high birefringence and a texture inherited from volcanic tuff or ash, and it is usually the mineral montmorillonite, but less often beidellite." The difficulty in applying the foregoing definition to bentonite as an industrial mineral commodity is that it is based on origin and is restricted to an ash, tuff, or volcanic glass parent material. Therefore, deposits consisting of the clay minerals required by this definition, but having uncertain origin or parent materials, cannot properly be called bentonite. Furthermore, many deposits in the western United States and in other countries that have formed from rocks other than the types required by the definition are being mined and sold as bentonite. Perhaps the best definition of bentonite as an industrial mineral is one given by R.E. Grim in a plenary lecture at the International Clay Conference (AIPEA) at Madrid, Spain, June 27, 1972. According to this redefinition, which will be used in this chapter, bentonite is a clay consisting essentially of smectite minerals (montmorillonite group of some usages), regardless of origin or occurrence. This definition solves the problem of the difference between the geologic and industrial usages of the term and overcomes the difficulty in assigning a name to smectite clay that formed from igneous rock other than ash, tuff, or glass, or those of sedimentary or uncertain origin. However, bentonite, when used with this meaning is still a rock term (consisting of more than one mineral), and it will not be possible to distinguish it from fuller's earth in many instances. One way of classifying bentonite is based on its swelling capacities when wet or added to water. Bentonite having sodium (Na+) as either the dominant or as an abundant exchangeable ion typically has very high swelling capacities and forms gel-like masses when added to water. Bentonite in which exchangeable calcium (Ca++) is more abundant than other ions has much lower swelling capacities than sodium varieties. Some calcium types swell little more than common clay, and most crumble into granular masses in water. Intermediate calcium-sodium bentonites, the so called mixed types, tend to swell moderately and to form gels of lesser volumes than equal masses of the sodium type bentonite. Because of the general relationship of swelling and exchangeable ion characteristics bentonite is commonly divided into the high swelling or sodium, low swelling or calcium, and moderate swelling or intermediate types. The term sub-bentonite (Davis et a]., 1940) is used inconsistently in industry for the low or moderate swelling varieties. The authors believe the use of this term should be discouraged because of its implication of low quality or low value and the lack of a mineralogical or use basis for it. In the United States bentonite is also classified by geographic location and the uses for which it is sold. Inasmuch as most of the low swelling calcium type occurs in states bordering the Gulf of Mexico, this variety is commonly called Southern bentonite. The largest high swelling sodium bentonite deposits and the major producing districts are in Wyoming and adjacent states. Therefore, this bentonite is commonly called the Wyoming or Western type. Such terms as drilling mud bentonite, foundry bond bentonite, and taconite bond bentonite relating directly to use are applied in marketing. Other terms including high and low yield bentonite, high and low gel bentonite, and high and low strength bentonite are also used to distinguish different grades. The varied classifications notwithstanding, bentonite occurs in so many different varieties that some cannot logically be classified according to any of the foregoing groupings. One of these types is hectorite, which is a high swelling lithium-bearing variety of smectite occurring mainly in California and adjacent states. It is, therefore, not a Wyoming type, and it occurs even farther west than the so called western bentonites. Others are bentonites having magnesium (Mg++) or hydrogen (H+) as the most abundant or dominant exchangeable ion. These types are neither sodium nor calcium varieties, and apparently some are low swelling, whereas others have rather high swelling capacities. Only a few delimiting parameters have been established. This paper will discuss briefly the highlights of a functioning ion-exchange cloth. Throughout the paper this fabric will be referred to as "Fabric Z".

A number of important studies, ongoing environment monitoring efforts and mining and road construction projects in the lignite based electrical power production area of Amyntaio ? Ptolemais in North West Greece require an accurate and up to date model of the topography. In recognition of the importance of such a model, a project was initiated by the Laboratory of Mining Information Technology and GIS Applications in the Department of Geotechnology and Environmental Engineering of the Technological Educational Institute of Western Macedonia. A massive surface triangulation model was generated from vector data using an optimized Delaunay based method. Combined with aerial and satellite imagery, the triangulation model provides a complete 3D terrain model of the area characterized by high levels of accuracy, detail and realism. The generated model is easy to modify with new data in order to improve its detail and keep it up to date with ongoing earth moving and development operations in the area.

INTRODUCTION For any identified mineral resource to qualify as a minable reserve, it must contain legally and economically extractable mineral at the time of determination. As competition for land has increased, the legal complexities have more than kept pace, frequently becoming the most important determinant in mineral exploration and development projects. Rarely will developers of a project avoid having to obtain numerous federal, state, and/or local permits while acquiring the necessary legal permission to begin mining. Each site must be selected carefully, not only for economic feasibility, but also for legal feasibility. Although it is impossible to present site-specific solutions for all potential underground developments, certain generalizations may be applied to specific land categories, particularly federally owned land. Such federally owned land includes more than 33% of the land area of the United States and many of the areas potentially attractive for future development. State and local restrictions affect a large portion of the nonfederal land, and those restrictions are equally important even though their diversity and current status require more regional study than can be provided herein (the list of references include sources of additional information). Each potential mining site requires a title search of the land status to determine the land ownership and the conditions affecting development. In addition, appropriate data concerning the mineralogic and economic potentials of an area must be collected. As listed in Table 1, many sources of public information are avail- able to aid potential developers. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical federal master title plat. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE The settlement of the United States reflects a fascinating history of public-land laws and subsequent mineral-disposal laws. Most of the statutes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries sought to dispose of land for the purpose of generating revenue to the federal government. The underlying need for general revenue contributed directly to numerous and often conflicting land policies. More recently, diverse federal programs such as environmental legislation have transcended the need for revenue in forming the framework that determines who has power over mineral developments and where those developments can take place. In 1812, the General Land Office was established under the Treasury Dept. At that time, English common law prevailed, entitling the owner of the surface to whatever was contained within the surface boundaries from the surface to the center of the earth. Unless a distinct title separated the mineral estate, it was included in the surface-land ownership. However, gold and silver were the property of the crown and were controlled by sovereign prerogative. Early state legislation on the subject of mines and minerals may be classified as legislation providing for the sale of state lands with a reservation of the minerals and legislation recognizing or asserting the sovereign prerogative for precious metals. In 1781, a Pennsylvania statute reserved 20% of all gold and silver ore for the use of the commonwealth. Thomas Jefferson suggested that a portion of all gold and silver be retained by the federal government. These early rules affecting land in the eastern states, now privately held, have been re- pealed, declared obsolete, or largely ignored. Federal legislation prior to 1848 and affecting mining may be classified as legislation reserving the minerals to the United States and legislation authorizing the disposition of reserved minerals by sale, lease, or grant. With many modifications, these basic policies remain in effect at the present time. A 1796 act provided for the sale of the Northwest Territory and for the establishment of the present system of rectangular survey for public lands. The Lake Superior copper region was the scene of "wild and baseless excitement in 1837" when the attorney general concluded that the president had the power to lease lands in Wisconsin; this opinion soon was overturned by another attorney general. By 1846, Congress had passed legislation authorizing the president to sell reserved lead mines "as soon as practicable" since the system of granting Leases had proved to be unprofitable to both the government and the lessees, many of whom refused to pay the rent. The general practice of early federal Legislation was to make a distinction between mineral lands and other lands, deal with them separately, and generally withhold mineral lands from disposal except through special legislation dealing with particular land. In 1848, following the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, a vast land area was ceded to the United States by Mexico. This area included the present states of California, Nevada, and Utah, as well as portions of Arizona. Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. This abolished the Mexican laws and customs relating to mining and preceded the adoption of the miners' own rules and customs. The adoption of those rules and customs followed a hard-fought battle between western congressmen and the eastern establishment. The western congressmen advocated adopting local customs through a location patent system, while the eastern establishment, particularly in Ohio and Indiana, favored an all- leasing system to pay off Civil War debts. The first mining law was passed in 1869 as an amendment to an act granting right-of-way to ditch land owners, and it was followed by the 1872 Mining Law. Precedent was established for the first categories of protected lands in the opening words of this act, which included the phrase "all unreserved" lands. Reserved lands subsequently defined included military and Indian reservations and were excluded from location since they were determined to be reserved lands. Many existing tunnels have deteriorated as they age, requiring a massive amount of investment for their rehabilitation. The tunnel of interest in this paper is being rehabilitated by adding precast concrete arch panels under the existing concrete ceiling, and measuring the gap between them was the objective of this research. For this purpose, a mobile 3D laser/thermal scanner was used for scanning the tunnel, especially for the purpose of measuring its profile. To calculate the gap, the distance between the tunnel profile and the theoretical profile of the concrete arches was measured. Additionally, an in-house program was developed using MATLAB to automate the data processing to determine the above-referenced gaps. Results were provided in the form of heat maps showing the measured gap.

Plans for achieving planned production rates at the Red Lake Mine High Grade Ore Zone required that the mine ventilation system be upgraded. Time constraints required that only a site assessment of the mine ventilation system be performed followed by recommendations for providing adequate ventilation conditions at the production zone. This paper describes the engineering assessment, design and commissioning of the ventilation system upgrade for achieving increased flows at the high grade ore zone. The work was successfully achieved with minimal capital expenditures and disruption to the mining cycle.

PROJECT OVERVIEW As the sun-bronzed San Diego students strolled casually to class, mining crews from Atkinson Construction were working only 9 meters below the surface. The330 meter long, 11.3 meter diameter squat ellipse NATM tunnel is part of the9.3 kilometer Mission Valley East Extension Light Rail Transit (MVE-LRT) being constructed for the San Diego Metropolitan Transit Development Board (MTDB). The SDSU segment of the MVE-LRT was awarded to the Clark Construction Group, the parent company of Atkinson Construction for $82.7 million. URS CORP was the prime designer and Hatch Mott MacDonald performed the NATM tunnel design. The construction managers were Washington Infrastructure Services with Underground Construction Managers, EPC Consultants, and ILF Consultants. A NATM tunnel design was chosen as the most cost-effective way to minimize disruption of the university activities. The tunnel passes close to several buildings and directly below access roads, tennis courts and a baseball field. The NATM method of conventional mining uses shotcrete for ground support often reinforced with steel orplastic fibers, welded wire mesh and lattice girders. The tunnel runs from a cut and cover box up a 4.2% grade in a 217 meter radius left-hand curve with several spirals and ends at the underground station 330 meters away. The depth of cover varies from 16 meters near the west portal to nine meters at the station. The design called for a two-pass system with a primary lining of 300 mm shotcrete with lattice girders at 1 m centers and two layers of welded wire mesh. The lattice girders are used primarily for profile control and are not considered a structural element. The top heading was designed to be excavated in one of three excavation sequences depending on ground conditions and depth of cover. Most coal seams in the United Kingdom contain firedamp, some of which is released into the ventilating airways as the strata around a working relax. The close sequence of seams in carboniferous strata is usually such that seams in adjacent roof and floor strata are also disturbed and potentially large quantities of firedamp can enter the workings from these sources. Since emission depends on the disturbance rate of the seams, higher coal production rates associated with increased mechanisation in the colliery accentuate the problem. Firedamp concentrations in UK underground workings are subject to statutory regulations1. To enable production to continue uninterrupted and in safety the problem is tackled by ventilation engineers by the provision of adequate ventilation in the airway and by the technique of firedamp drainage. In the UK the latter usually takes the form of cross-measure boreholes in roof strata, and increasingly also in floor strata, drilled from the gateroads, especially from return airways. In this way firedamp emitted from disturbed seams in adjacent strata can be extracted directly to the surface or to some safe position outbye, and the airways of the working district are not contaminated. Despite the use of firedamp drainage, considerable quantities of firedamp enter the ventilation air- stream and the concentration levels may be seen to be related to the coal production activites in the district. Figure 1 shows a typical recording of methane concentration obtained by a BM1 methanometer at a position outbye in a return gate where firedamp drainage was operating. The general rise in level throughout the working week may be seen, together with peaks occurring during production shifts and the gradual decay of emission over the weekend. In view of the fact that ventilation and firedamp drainage contribute a considerable proportion to the operating costs of the colliery, it is essential that the ventilation and firedamp drainage requirements be calculated as accurately as possible at the planning stage of the working. In the past the ventilation engineer has had to rely heavily on experience in neighbouring workings but with the development of mines in previously unworked areas there is clearly a need for a methodical approach to meet the requirements of planning. The work described in this paper represents such an approach and it is hoped that successful development and application of the method of prediction will lead to the widespread adoption of a routine procedure. The current development of a method of prediction of firedamp emission into longwall workings is based on the theoretical treatment of gas emission from coal seams proposed by Airey2 in 1971, which was based on his study of gas emission from broken coal 3 which was published in 1968. In common with other experimental methods of prediction, the method enables a calculation to be made of the total make of gas emitted from all sources of gas in the strata per tonne of mined coal.
