Subsidence profiles above two adjacent panels in Illinois are compared with pro- files predicting subsidence behavior obtained using the (i) National Coal Board (NCB, 1975) method, (ii) the profile function method and (iii) the influence function method. The NCB method predicts the maximum subsidence values at the center of the troughs accurately, but, the overall shapes of these predicted profiles do not match the profiles from the measured data well. Consistent values for the angles of draw were measured but these angles were different in the transverse (average value 43 degrees) and in the longitudinal (average value 17.5 degrees) directions. Time dependent subsidence effects are shown to be small but measurable. These displacements continue at a linear rate for at least a 12 month period. A comparison of measured horizontal distances, interpreted as horizontal strain, and the NCB predictions for strain shows that the peak measured strains are greater by a factor f about four than the predicted strains. The relationship between surface curvature and strain is investigated. Problems associated with calculation of surface curvatures from vertical displacement data are highlighted and a recommendation is made for future studies to consider direct measurement of this parameter. Surface curvatures above a moving face are found to be about three times less than the curvatures at the stationary end of the panel. On the other hand, a hyperbolic tangent profile function is shown to serve as an accurate predictive tool for subsidence behavior in two adjacent longwall panels at Old Ben Number 24 mine in Illinois. This function predicts not only the vertical displacements but also the surface curvatures above both panels. Influence functions are shown to be more problematic, although potentially more flexible, in their application than the profile functions.

There are two places in the world where potash, trade name for potassium chloride, is economically recovered from naturally occuring brines by solar evaporation. One is at the Dead Sea and the other at Wendover, Utah. American Potash and Chemical at Trona, California recovers potash from natural brines, but uses fuel to accomplish evaporation. Under proper meteorological conditions the use of solar evaporation might be desirable from the economical standpoint. Of course, this may not be true when, if by artificial evaporation, a group of very valuable salts are recovered. This is the case of the American Potash operation at Trona. Solar evaporation has its limits. The working temperature is low. We may say, just to cover most areas of the world where solar evaporation may be practical, that it will take place between 18°C and perhaps around 45°C. In most cases the average working temperature expected will be around 25°C.

The Mine safety and Health Administration (MSHA) formed the Mine Ventilation Bleeder and Gob Training Committee in 1993. This committee was charged with developing a training course designed to enhance the knowledge and understanding of practical bleeder ventilation systems. The course will probably include a discussion on the theory behind bleeder system design, an in-depth look at the strengths and weaknesses of the basic bleeder system types, case studies, and a review of the systems currently in use. A database on active underground bituminous coal mines, gob areas, and the bleeder systems presently used was developed from questionnaires distributed to nine Coal Mine Safety and Health (CMS&H) districts. Representative systems were selected for thorough investigation to develop case studies. This paper introduces some of the material to be included in the course, including a description of basic bleeder system designs, a review of a portion of the database, and facts about the gob areas and bleeder systems investigated for the development of case studies.

A novel liquid-liquid separation for the recovery of free or liberated gold from mixtures of fine particles was evaluated. The separation, conducted at ambient temperature and a pressure of about 1000 psi a, was based on the difference in wettability of precious metals and minerals. Contact angle results indicated that in the presence of water and liquid CO2, gold, platinum and silver had intermediate wettability. Minerals such as quartz and magnetite, however, were hydrophilic. Therefore fine gold particles. -325 mesh, that were mixed with water and liquid CO2 dispersed in the CO2 or agglomerated at the H2O-CO2 interface while the minerals tended to remain in the aqueous phase. Best results were obtained when these fine gold particles were liberated, were not agglomerated in slimes, were not adhering to minerals, and were not coated with minerals.

Lead anodes are used in commercial copper electrowinning operations, yet there is no method to calculate anode life. To be discussed in this paper are operating characteristics of rolled plate (Pb,Sn,Ca) alloy anodes at Morenci's electrowinning tankhouse along with fundamental operating conditions and how the anode reacts to these conditions. These include anode maintenance, electrolyte temperature and viscosity, cobalt concentration, and manganese concentration. Also to be discussed are anode substrate characteristics under normal operating conditions and how the corrosion rate is affected by changes in operating conditions.

Very little information is available concerning the magnetic properties of minerals and only recently has there been any attempt to correlate magnetic susceptibility with varying chemical composition1. The work described here covers a study of the relationship and chemical composition of both the rutile and sphene types of titanium minerals. The relationship between the magnetic susceptibility of three selected mineral specimens and the applied field strength is also presented. Experimental: The equipment and procedures used in this in- vestigation for crushing and cleaning the mineral specimens and for determining the magnetic susceptibilities were the same as that employed by Spokes and Mitchell1. The particle size of-the measured specimens was limited to 270/325 mesh.

The problem of effective utilization of fly ash has been given wide attention for a number of years. Although the effort devoted to the problem has led to some applications of demonstrated usefulness, the full utilization of fly ash has been held back by lack of concerted research and development activity, by lack of effective dissemination to potential users of fly ash of the knowledge that is available from laboratory and field studies, and by the obvious variability of the product. Because of the variability in fly ash from one power plant to another and from time-to-time in the same plant, specifications have been set up defining compositional or property limits within which a fly ash must fall to be used in certain applications. This paper discusses the bases for such specifications and examines them in the light of recent research on the characterization of fly ash. Other limitations and restrictions on the use of fly ash and what is being done to overcome them are also discussed.

"INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been increasing focus on environmental and social impacts of the extractive industries, climate change and resource scarcity. The concept of the circular economy aims to replaces the “take-make-dispose” economic model with one that eliminates waste of all kinds and is restorative by design. Such closed-loop systems implicitly aim to reduce the quantity of primary extracted materials entering the economy, thereby affecting supply and demand dynamics, hence mining industry economics. For the metals industry, the ability to engage in, or adapt to the circular economy can be heavily affected by industry structure and geographical factors. Eco-efficiency initiatives that reduce waste and environmental impact may help the mining and metals industry align with some of the goals of the circular economy. This paper focuses on base metals, and explores case studies in copper, lead and zinc. It analyzes primary and secondary metal production, and recycling. It examines company structures and how these affect engagement with the circular economy. CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRINCIPLES Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2012) describes the circular economy as “an industrial system that is restorative or regenerative by intention and design”, which “replaces the ‘end-of-life’ concept with restoration”, and “aims for the elimination of waste through the superior design of materials, products, systems, and, within this, business models”. The concept is systems focused. For materials such as metals, a series of loops are considered, including maintenance of devices, reuse, refurbishment and recycling. Potential methodologies to achieve circular economy outcomes include disassembly and reassembly of manufactured goods, leasing rather than buying major appliances, and converting to renewable energy sources. The circular economy is partially aligned with the principles of eco-efficiency, which relate to reducing the environmental impact per unit of a material produced. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY METAL PRODUCTION Base metals (copper, lead, zinc and nickel) are essential ingredients in modern economies and are key commodities produced by the global mining industry. Metal production can be categorized as primary or secondary. Primary metal comes from the processing, smelting and refining of metal content extracted from ores, while secondary production comes from metals recovered from recycled streams (e.g. recycled lead-acid batteries, copper wire scrap, etc.). Metals are stored in natural, anthropogenic in-use and anthropogenic waste stocks. An example of the stocks, flows and processes associated with global copper extraction and use is shown in Figure 1."

Acid mine drainage (AMD) occurs in high sulfur coal and heavy metal mining environments. We show remediation methods using 3D numerical ground water flow models and chemical kinetics of pyrite oxidation for acid leaching of pyrite during air and ground water flow. A recently developed numerical model couples air and water flow with kinetics of iron-reactive bacteria, oxygen transport, specific chemical reaction rates, and pyrite oxidation to calculate migration control of pollution. A model is presented which considers diminution of acid mine drainage in pyrite rich ore bodies by raising the potentiometric surface through a vadose zone to reduce acid mine drainage. A ground water model is presented of an initially saturated mountain, containing an adit, with a sloping ground water table. Ground water recharge consists of snowfall and normal precipitation. Simulations indicate that the historically open adit creates a desaturated mountain above the adit. Significant air saturation ranging from 10-90% oxygen can occur to depths of the adit (-270 m). Remediation consists of plugging the adit, which fill s adit and mountain with water from recharge. Plugging the adit required <10 years for resaturation and rise of the water table in the mountain.

Methane Rating has been developed from a need, in South Africa, for quick and simple measurement of coal face methane characteristics. It employs proven existing direct measurement methods, adapted specifically for rapidly advancing coal face conditions, to deal with the short term high release rates encountered during continuous miner coal cutting. The Rating is a comparative value, relative to the normal or average conditions encountered within a maintained data base. The seam gas content and the initial emission rate are plotted against each other on a graph, where they are compared with the average conditions to obtain the rating. The higher the seam gas content, and the higher the initial methane release rate, then the higher the Methane Rating, on a scale of 1 to 4. Methane being released from a newly mined coal sample is measured once underground, from a sealed gas-tight canister. The sample is returned, still sealed, to surface and milled to rapidly release the remaining methane. It is later intended that the milling process is also completed underground. Applications include the identification of changing methane conditions, outburst prone conditions, methane emission against advance, and mining in devolatilised coal.

The Floridan aquifer, which underlies all of Florida, yields water with a sulfate content of less than 50 parts per million in the north-western part and throughout most of the center of the State. In the southern part of Florida and along the most of the east coast, the sulfate concentration generally exceeds 100 parts per million and is as much as 1,700 parts per million. The sulfate concentration tends to be higher in the deeper zones of the aquifer. This map shows the sulfate concentration in the upper part of the aquifer. Sulfate is found in almost all natural water. Sulfate in rainwater is dissolved from impurities and gases in the atmosphere. Rankama and Sahama (1955, p. 314) report that the average sulfate content of rainwater is two parts per million; however, concentrations have been as high as 283 parts per million. Much of the sulfate in rainwater comes from hydrogen sulfide gas which is generated in shallow water on the continental shelves. The combustion of bituminous coal used for heating and industrial purposes seems to be an important local source of sulfate.

Nearly all of the sulphur produced in the world today is converted to sulphuric acid and 49 % is used in the manufacture of fertilizers. In the last few years we have seen the beginning of another chapter in the volatile history of sulphur as the severe shortage of 1963:-67 has been transformed into present-day surplus. Prospects for further aggravation of this situation in the years ahead seem assured. In 1970, western world production showed a rate of increase of 4 -5%, which 1S somewhat less than that of 8% for the period 1963-1967. The rate of growth of consumption dropped considerably in 1968 when the demands of the fertilizer industry fell. During the same period of time, wide-spread demands have been set in motion for a clean environment which indicates that a fundamental change in sulphur supply, demand, and even sources, is likely to result from this upheaval. The sale of sulphur by Poland to the western world has increased and for 1970 was estimated at over one million metric tons. In the next few years, increase in Canadian sulphur supply will stern from two sources;

Projections of coal reserves in Central Appalachia are essential for long-term planning in the region. Annual production is declining in some states, such as Virginia, and mineable reserves for the Central Appalachian Coalfield are challenged by difficult geological, mining, and market conditions. In order to project coal mining longevity in this region, interviews with mining companies were conducted to assist in the determination and assessment of technical and economic factors that impact coal seam mineability. This information was applied to seam and coal reserve data developed by state and federal governments. The results were carefully analyzed to determine the effects of various factors on the overall mineable coal reserve base.

Regulations on sulfur emissions have caused the electric utilities to evaluate various methods of meeting them. Low-sulfur, low-volatile coals can be burned alone or blended with high-volatile? coals. This option may be a cost-effective alternative to the installation of scrubbers on coal-fired combustion systems. In some blending applications, problems may be encountered because the low sulfur content and high calorific value of the low-volatile or other clean coal allow it to economically upgrade extremely poor quality coal. While this is done to meet specification purposes, actual boiler performance may be dominated by the poorer quality coal. Thus, the reputation of the low-volatile or other clean coal suffers. As a result of laboratory and full scale testing, conducted over the last five years, a model has been developed to evaluate the relative combustion characteristics of various coals and coal blends. A database for different coals has been gathered. This paper presents the model and shows how power plants and coal mine personnel can use it to evaluate their coals from different sources. It can be used to blend two or more coals from different sources so that thee blended coal has flame stability characteristics which are similar to those of the baseline coal.

This technical note describes an alternative procedure that can be used in linear programming calcula¬tions where the compliance limit of lbs S02/million Btu for the blending coal is subject to change. Dr. Mateer in his technical note titled "Coal blending for sulfur compliance" (ME, September 1994, p. 1103) defined an "excess sulfur" parameter that provides a valid constraint equation for a linear program optimization. The coals used by Dr. Mateer in his examples are shown in Table 1. "INTRODUCTION Dissolved salts build up in leach solutions over time as leach solutions mature. Iron can be particularly problematic for hydrometallurgical copper production as it can compete with copper for separation during solvent extraction (SX), leading to iron bleed through and reduced electrowinning (EW) efficiency. In its ferric form (Fe+3) it precipitates as a hydroxide at fairly low pH and can promote clogging and disrupted flow within leach pads as a result of localized pH deviations – such as might result from weather events. The solids formed can cause relatively irreversible degradation to pad productivity. The precipitation pH point for solids formation falls as the ferric (Fe+3) concentration increases, making the issue more prevalent as leach circuits for ore bodies containing appreciable iron get older. It can also be more of a concern when leaching lower grade ore like tailings where lower copper content may increase iron/copper ratios which may increase iron accumulation rates. Control of ferric (Fe+3) levels could be used to lower ferric (Fe+3) levels and keep the ferric hydroxide [Fe(OH)3] precipitation pH sufficiently high to avoid the associated solids formation and potential leach pad occlusion. Control of ferric (Fe+3) and ferrous (Fe+2) tenors and ratios may also provide benefit for improving sulfide ore leaching or bioleaching performance and effectiveness. Traditionally options for such control were rather limited with bleeding contaminants off or chemical dosing treatments being prominent methods. Now Blue Planet Strategies introduces a new option. "For the Hollywood International Airport Runway Expansion Project at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the structural fire durability analysis was completed for a series of tunnels formed by roadway and railroad cells located under the runway structure. A systematic design approach was developed to mitigate structural damage during a fire event and arrive at a practical method to structural fire engineering that is compliant to NFPA 502. To ensure the NFPA 502 requirements are satisfied, the performance based approach was implemented and the engineering analyses were performed for the adopted design fire event. The analyses considered the facility’s unique features including its fire safety systems to determine applicable design fire curves for structural durability analyses. The paper also outlines the process of defining the project specific fire curves for a specific design fire scenario and summarizes the results of heat transfer and structural fire durability analyses. This approach was aimed to assist the owner and Authority Having Jurisdiction to achieve practical decisions to the tunnel facility fireproofing.INTRODUCTIONFort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in Broward County, Florida is a major hub facility serving more than 23 million passengers annually. As part of the Airport Expansion Program, the South Runway (9R-27L) Expansion project aimed to meet ever increasing service demands via an increase to runway lengths. This necessitated the placement of one of the reconstructed runways on bridge structures over the existing U.S. Route 1 (US 1), a major north–south U.S. Highway that serves the East Coast of the United States, and the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, thus effectively creating multiple tunnel cells beneath the subject runway. For this project, HNTB suggested a tunnel fire damage mitigation system that would protect the runway major structural elements from the design fire event that may happen within the tunnel cells. This paper addresses the issues related to the fire event originating within the tunnel encompassing the US1 highway only, and deals with requirements of NFPA 502 [5] exclusively. Therefore, while approaching the structural fire protection issues for the specific tunnel cells beneath the runway structure, the requirements of the American National Standard NFPA 502 (Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways, 2008 edition) were followed. The dissolution kinetics of cobalt in iodine/iodide solutions was investigated using a rotating disc technique. Variables studied here included temperature, rotating speed, concentration of lixiviants, and pH of the solution. The overall dissolution reaction was found to be limited by mass transfer of tri-iodide through the diffusion boundary layer with Arrhenius activation energy of less than 16.2 kJ/mol (4 kcal/mol) over the temperature range, 2-42°C. The pH of the solution had little effect as long as the pH of the solution was less than 8. However, when the pH of the solution became greater than 8, the dissolution rate decreased dramatically due to passivation. The rate of dissolution was in good agreement with the dissolution model developed by the authors earlier.

The U. S. Bureau of Mines studied the suitability of using flexible tendon cable supports as secondary roof supports at a western coal mine. The supports were installed in longwall tailgate entries and grouted into the mine roof. This paper quantifies how the use of cable supports can improve ventilation in underground airways. A mine ventilation simulator was used to model the changes in airway resistance and airflow and show potential for further ventilation improvements when cable supports are used. Model results indicated that cable support use translated to savings in air pressure around the longwall panel and increased airflow at the longwall face.
