Grinding with steel media adversely affects the flotation response of galena. Electrochemical measurements, flotation tests, and AES, XPS, and STEM examinations were employed to identify interactions between galena and mild steel. Iron oxide, hydroxide, or sulfate species that formed on the galena surface upon contact with mild steel decreased its floatability, with the time of contact and aeration condition affecting the severity of the flotation depression.. Parallel tests performed with an active metal, magnesium, indicated that floatability was also affected by the presence of a surface coating involving lead species.

Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent upon the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features; in order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application.

Tellurium (Te) is one of the least abundant elements in the crust and tends to form minerals associated with copper, lead, zinc and iron sulfide deposits. Today, most tellurium production comes from the anode slimes and other wastes generated in metal refining. Most of the current tellurium produced in the world is used as an alloying agent in iron and steel, as catalysts, and in the chemical industry. However, future demand and production could increase because tellurium is increasingly used in solar panels and some electronic devices. Tellurium minerals are found in Au-Ag districts in New Mexico, but were not considered important exploration targets in the past. In New Mexico, tellurium is found associated with porphyry copper deposits in southwestern New Mexico and with Au-Ag veins in the Eureka, Sylvanite, Organ, Lordsburg, Steeple Rock, Wilcox, Mogollon, Chloride, Cuchillo, Hillsboro, Zuni Mountains, White Oaks, and Nogal-Bonito districts. The only tellurium production from New Mexico has been from the Lone Pine deposit (Wilcox district), where approximately 5 tons of tellurium ore was produced. Gold-tellurides are found with gold, silver, pyrite, and fluorite in fracture-filling veins in rhyolite at Lone Pine, with reported assays as much as 5,000 ppm Te. Other districts in New Mexico have potential for tellurium, but require field evaluation.

The first power transmission cable tunnel in Singapore was the 2.6km long undersea tunnel between Pulau Seraya and mainland Singapore, constructed in the1980s. Ten years later, similar concepts were used for the Tuas Cable Tunnel. The tunnel, which includes a 2.2km long immersed tube section, was designed to accommodate 10power circuits of 400kV and 230kV capacity. It is fully equipped with sophisticated control and communication equipment, fire suppressant and life safety systems plus a maintenance vehicle which runs on tracks through the length of the tunnel. The paper discusses the planning, design, and construction of the Tuas tunnel, and the development of these concepts for future tunnels.

Editor’s note: This is the second part of a two-part series on longwall mining in the United States. Part one was published in the December 2005 issue of ME (pp. 21-26). It provided a history of longwall coal mining in the United States. It also discussed the technology involved in the productivity gains and operational improvements. Boyd anticipates that U.S. coal production will increase by 61 Mt (67 million st) (6 percent) from 2004 to 2010. A combination of higher surface and underground mine production will be required to meet the projected market demand. Boyd’s projections of coal production by major mining methods are shown in Table 1.

Fully mechanized top caving mining of steeply inclined extra-thick seams with variable angles has complex roof rock movement, failure, caving, and filling mechanisms. Moreover, the variable-angle coal seams make rock–equipment stability control challenging. We analyzed rock deformation and failure mechanisms, overburden bearing structures, and working characteristics of supports through physical simulations, field tests, and theoretical analysis of the no. 120210 working face of Zaoquan Coal Mine. Overburden rock movement has distinct regional characteristics, with a large caving height (to the main roof layer) in the upper area, and lower caving height (to the lower main roof) in the lower area. Support loading is regional and unbalanced along the inclined direction. The critical layer of overlying strata migrates, and bearing structures formed by breaking the critical layer exhibit cross-layer generalization along the inclination. The upper region has a cantilever beam structure in the basic roof rock layer; the lower region has an inclined masonry structure with multistage ladders in the breakage basic roof rock layer. Application of a false-inclined working face layout with the tailgate ahead of the headgate and an arc arrangement (radius 28.65 m, arc length 10–20 m) in variable angle areas, and regional control of support working resistance and top-coal caving amounts, control regional failure overburden. Safe and efficient mining was achieved, with the monthly production and recovery rates reaching 344,900 t and 85.86%, respectively. Our results expand the scope of fully mechanized top caving mining and have important theoretical and technological significance.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. Investigaciones preliminares sugieren que bajo esquemas de dosificación normales los contenidos residuales totales de DRO en aguas de procesos deben estar limitados a la fracción soluble en agua (WSF por sus siglas en inglés) sub-ppm. Es más, los hidrocarburos aromáticos poli-cíclicos (PAH por sus siglas en inglés) debería segmentarse de manera proporcional con los compuestos orgánicos de diesel (DRO). El propósito de este estudio fue confirmar estos resultados en pruebas de flotación realizadas en laboratorio. Se midieron los contenidos totales de DRO Y PAH en aguas asociadas con los flujos o corrientes de concentrados y relaves. Los resultados muestran que las aguas con concentrados tenían de manera consistente mayores cantidades de DRO que las aguas de relaves. Es más, los contenidos de DRO en ambos flujos generalmente se incrementaban con el aumento de la dosis de diesel. De acuerdo con la investigación preliminar, los DRO parecían estar limitados a la fracción soluble en agua (WSF) y los PAH tendían a segmentarse proporcionalmente con los DRO. In England, the provision of aggregate is determined by the historical relationship between construction and aggregate consumption. This approach does not necessarily lead to sustainable decision-making and can be seen as being driven by political expediency, rather than reasonable environmental consideration. The introduction of the statutory requirement for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) in the UK has provided the opportunity to examine this issue on a more rational basis. This paper provides a practical application of a SEA based approach, to the provision of aggregates at a regional level. The process, underpinned by relevant information on resources and environmental assets, suggests that alternative supply scenarios for aggregate provision are tested in a transparent, consistent manner with increased genuine stakeholder consultation. It supports a move away from "predict and provide" approaches to one where aggregates are sourced with the best balance of environmental costs and benefits.

Coal and coal combustion byproducts are potential candidates for alternative resources of REEs (rare earth elements). The Illinois Basin is a major coal-producing district in the USA, but little work is available on speciation of REEs in the basin’s coals. In this study, a total number of 382 samples from known locations in the Illinois Basin coal beds were acquired, analyzed for their REE contents, and investigated for any spatial trends or chemical correlations. This study includes Springfield, Herrin, and Baker coal beds—the most heavily mined coals in the basin. An average coal ash from the basin contains 320 ppm REE, with Baker being the highest (407 ppm on average). However, the distribution of REEs in the coal beds was laterally and vertically heterogeneous. A number of trends were found in the REE variations. The most important trend was the relationships of the REE concentrations and fractionations with the distance from the syndepositional sandstones. The total REE concentrations were higher in the proximity of the sandstones, likely due to the increased deposition of detrital material. This increase was the most significant in Springfield coal (90%) and least in Baker (6%). Those coal samples from the Springfield and Herrin coal beds distal from the syndepositional sandstones had a heavy to light REE ratio (H/L ratio) of 0.40 on average, whereas in proximal locations, the ratio was dropped to an average of 0.30. This trend was not significant in the Baker coal bed. In general, higher mineral matter in the coals was associated with higher REEs. In coal preparation plants, refuse rocks can have up to 360 ppmREE. However, the ashes of the cleanest coals had higher REE levels. Such ashes also have a higher ratio of heavy to light REEs. The highest REE concentrations were found in the claystones and the shales associated with the coal beds. Since the naturally occurring calcite, quartz, and pyrite samples were depleted in REEs, an association of REEs with the clay minerals can be suggested.

Mining and processing of raw materials is one of the earliest activities of man for survival and development. The products are used for making jewelleries, metal tools, and for exchange of goods and services. However, despite the benefits of mine recoveries, it’s negative and long term effects on the environment and lives remain the point of discussion throughout the world. This study summarizes findings of researches in active/abandoned lead–zinc mines in Enyigba and Ishiagu mining districts including social surveys in the localities surrounding the mines in order to ascertain the effects on the inhabitants. Lead–zinc mining in Enyigba and Ishiagu, southeastern Nigeria has lasted for decades and has affected the socio-economic well-being of the host communities. There are evidences of soil, water, and plants contamination by Pb, Zn, Cd, and Mn in these mining communities. The mining activities also affect the overall social development of the host communities. These effects include retardation in educational development, health care provision, unemployment, and access to potable water supply. Others are rise in poverty level, social amenities, sanitary/hygiene level, high cost of living, and fertility rate. Possible mitigation strategies such as to liaising with relevant government agencies in collaboration with mine owner, mine workers, and host communities can ameliorate these negative effects and promote environmental sustainability.

This review work reports the recovery of potassiumfromdifferent rocks and mineral sources. The global demand for potassiumis rising consistently due to the growth of agricultural production. A major portion of the world potassium production is consumed in making of fertiliser; however, other uses include those in pharmaceutical, glass, ceramic, food and detergent industries. The availability of soluble potash minerals (sylvite, kainite and carnallite) in different countries like Canada, USA, Israel and Russia makes them as major potash producers, whereas agricultural-based countries like Liberia, Somalia, Central African Republic, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia including India meet their potassium requirement through import only. On the contrary, the availability of huge potassium-bearing rocks/minerals (like nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica, glauconitic sandstone) in these countries containing around 4–17% K2O would be a prospective for commercial production of potassium. The potassium recovery from minerals/rocks is very complicated due to the uniform distribution of potassium throughout the crystal structure. Different physico-chemical separation methods like bioleaching, chemical leaching, flotation and roast leaching have been discussed for the successful recovery of potash values from these rocks/minerals. However, the recovery of potassium from hugely available seawater using the chemical precipitation, solvent extraction,membrane separation and ionic exchangemethods is not cost-effective due to the low concentration of potassium.

There is an increasing requirement for mines to meet a certain minimum criteria for sustainability within the context of the physical environment, ecosystem and socio-economic system in which they are located. The mining industry has wrestled to develop methods for assessing the ‘sustainability’ value of a mining project and indicators of ‘sustainability success’. A methodology for the evaluation of sustainability of a mining project using the Multiple Accounts Analysis (MAA) system was developed. The MAA is a platform for engagement of stakeholders and for the assessment of site-specific alternatives based on both qualitative and quantitative indicators of success.

Coal has been mined in the central Appalachian coalfields of southern West Virginia, western Virginia, and eastern Kentucky for more than a century. The dwindling reserve base consists in large part of coal that would have been considered unmineable by earlier generations. Nearly every current operation is working on a property where coal has been extracted in the past, from seams either above, below, or both. NIOSH is conducting research aimed at helping mine planners prevent hazardous conditions due to multiple seam interactions. To-date, more than 300 case histories have been collected from underground mines, mainly from central Appalachia. This paper focuses on several of the more challenging situations that have been encountered, including: • Room-and-pillar development 20 ft (6 m) beneath full extraction workings at a depth of 1,000 ft (300m) of cover (Virginia) • Pillar recovery 45 ft above full extraction workings at 900 ft (270 m) of cover (Virginia) • Near-simultaneous room-and-pillar mining with pillar recovery with 40 ft (12 m) of interburden and 1,500-2,000 ft (450-600 m) of cover (Kentucky) • Longwall mining directly beneath main entries in overlying seams (West Virginia) • Some of these operations have been highly successful in overcoming the challenges, others less so. The lessons learned from their experience will help ensure that these and similar difficult reserves can be mined safely.

The recovery of coarse particles has been widely recognized as being limited by the froth in mineral flotation. In response to this, FLSmidth has developed the Selective Froth Recovery (SFR) System. The SFR System is an extraction system that vacuums material from select locations within the froth and separates the recovered solids into coarse and fine fractions with a hydrocyclone. The SFR is supported and located by an actuator connected to the cell?s level control so that the suction heads are maintained at an offset distance from the slurry level. This can increase the recovery of coarse material by selectively recovering the material close to the bottom of the froth where drop-back of coarse particles typically takes place. The SFR System has been tested at two separate mine sites, and has been proven to increase the copper recovery in both trials. TEST RESULTS The SFR prototype was installed in a copper recovery circuit, on a rougher scavenger 160-m3 flotation cell. Figure 1, shows the SFR System, which consists of four conical skimmer heads that are plumbed together and share a common actuator. The SFR System, raised out of the froth prior to a test, can be seen in Figure 2. The SFR prototype was able to maintain a variety of set points using the level control to determine the slurry height.

El Abra is one of the world’s premier copper de-posits. The project is located in northern Chile, 140 km (87 miles) inland from the Pacific coast. It has the same geologic age and structural setting as the world-class Chuquicamata copper mine located 42 km (26 miles) to the south. The current development plan for El Abra extracts798 Mt (879 million st) of high-quality oxide ore. This will require building a solvent extraction/electrowinning(SX/EW) facility that can produce 225 kt/a (248,000stpy) of cathode copper. This will make El Abra the largest SX/EW copper operation in the world, and the world’s seventh-largest copper producer.

In the dimension stone industry, workers in processing shops may be exposed to harmful levels of respirable silica dust when conducting the different tasks in stone preparation, which include cutting, grinding, polishing, and thermaling. To protect workers from this health hazard, operators sometimes ventilate processing shops using fan-powered dust collectors to capture and filter dust. To investigate this issue, NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, in cooperation with a dimension stone operation, upgraded an off-the-shelf dust collector the operator was utilizing in a polishing/cutting shop. Initial dust surveys showed that the unit was under-designed for the amount of dust being generated in the shop. The objective of the research was to cost-effectively increase the air cleaning volume and improve dust capture efficiency of the unit with a larger motor and blower. The unit?s original stock 0.56 kw motor and blower was replaced with a 2.24 kw motor and matching blower to increase airflow. The unit was evaluated both in the laboratory and the shop before and after the retrofit to determine the improvement of the upgrade. The study showed that the 2.24 kw upgrade improved the performance over the original 0.56 kw motor resulting in more dust being cleaned from the ambient air in the shop. The 2.24 kw unit cleaned 19% more air and captured 32% more respirable dust than the 0.56 kw unit.

The Zoro pegmatite project in east-central Manitoba occurs 20 km east of the historic mining town of Snow Lake. A composite sample (Master Comp) was prepared fromthree pegmatite zones within Zoro Dyke “D1” including the North, Central, and South Zones for mineralogical analysis and heavy liquid separation (HLS). The mineralogical examination was conducted on a subsample crushed to ca. P80 of 600 μm to determine the overall mineral assemblage, liberation of spodumene, and assess the potential recovery of spodumene by flotation. XRD and QEMSCAN results show that the sample consists of spodumene (10.5%), quartz (29.3%), plagioclase (29.0%), K-feldspars (21.3%), micas (5.1%), tourmaline (2.9%), and Fe-Mn-phosphates (0.1%). Spodumene is well liberated (88%), but also forms complex particles (7%), and middlings with quartz (4%). Liberation of spodumene increases from 81 in the + 600 μm to 95%in the − 106 μm size fraction. Liberation of quartz, feldspars, and micas account for 89%, 94%, and 83%, respectively. Electron probe micro-analyses and LA-ICP-MS showed that the average Li concentration is 3.7% in spodumene, 2196 ppm in micas, 1001 ppm in tourmaline, and 115 ppm in K-feldspars. Thus, spodumene accounts for 96%, micas 2%, Fe-Mn phosphates 1%, and both K-feldspars and tourmaline for < 1% of the total Li in the sample. The mineralogical data indicate the potential to recover spodumene by flotation with minimal Li losses due to other than spodumene carriers. Heavy liquid separation was conducted on the Master Comp which was crushed to − 6.4 mm, while the − 600 μmfractionwas removed fromthis test. The coarse fraction − 6.4mm/+ 600 μmwas subjected to HLS tests with eight heavy liquid-specific gravity cut-points (2.65 to 3.10 g/cm3). HLS indicates that it is possible to produce a high-grade lithium concentrate (close to 6% Li2O) after the rejection of iron silicates with magnetic separation.

The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in&apos; the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. Cleveland-Cliffs’ Northshore Mining Company operates a magnetic iron ore (taconite) concentrator and pelletizer in Silver Bay, MN. These are two recent cost reduction projects: 1. Rougher Magnetic Separators were upgraded throughout the concentrator; throughput and recovery were simultaneously improved. 2. Green Ball Roll Screens on one agglomeration circuit were upgraded from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch rolls. Throughput improved by 24% from 62 to 77 LTPH. Green ball size distribution improved as an added benefit.
