INTRODUCTION Geophysical applications to engineering projects are usually considered for reconnaissance exploration, and for some preliminary design phases. Recent experience indicates a growing need and a greater number of requests for measurements during construction. This is particularly true where seismic velocity values are related to strength properties of rock. Typical project objectives during construction are: dike and tunnel realignments required by surprise conditions encountered during foundation preparation; checks on grouting effectiveness which require velocity measurements before and after grouting; and dynamic moduli measurements along the walls of tunnels and deep excavations. This paper considers one of the on-site seismic applications that is rather simple and straightforward, and yet has few references in the literature. The specific objective is the measurement of seismic velocities (both "P" waves and "S" waves) for determining the thicknesses and dynamic moduli values of loosened zones of tunnel wall rock. Fifteen samples of chert from seven localities in Ohio were tested for potential durability and reactivity in concrete. The tests determined are porosity, pore-size distribution, relative degree crystallinity, specific surface area, and degree of dissolution according to the ASTM C289-71, Potential Reactivity of Aggregates, Chemical Methods. The results of these tests were compared with petrographic, electron optical, physical-chemical, and engineering properties of the chert samples. Based on these tests, the important properties that affect the durability and reactivity of chert in concrete were observed to be: (1) porosity, (2) pore-size distribution or pore spectra, (3) relative degree of crystallinity, (4) grain size, (5) specific surface area, (6) impurities, and (7) amount and species of quartz present-all of which are functions of original composition, time (geologic age), depth of burial, tectonics, and diagenesis. Preliminary results of this study indicated that the geologic history and physical-chemical properties of chert vary from one sample to another, and any one or combination of these parameters affect the performance of the chert in concrete. These complex interrelationships are difficult to ascertain; if the performance of the chert in concrete is to be predicted, it is necessary to study in detail this enigmatic material.

Innovative designs, mining, construction and reclamation practices are used at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara's Batu Hijau mine on Sumbawa Indonesia to develop a cost-effective, environmentally sound, stockpile and dumping system. The mine production rate is over 200 million tonnes per year (50 million tonnes processed with 150 million tonnes being stockpiled for processing later or placed in waste dumps). Dump development for over 150 million tonnes per year in a mountainous, tropical environment, while meeting environmental and permitting requirements is not an easy task. The effective implementation requires innovative techniques and practices from every department of the mine.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc.’s Betze open pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, NV. Ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County (Fig. 1). The final pit will be about 2440 m long x 1550 m wide (8000 x 5100 ft), elongate in a west-northwesterly direction and about 425 m (1400 ft) deep. The pit straddles the Barrick-Newmont Gold Co. property boundary. History The first hole at the Goldstrike Mine was drilled in 1962. Between 1963 and 1964, 17 shallow holes were drilled with little encouragement, in view of the price of gold at $1.12/g ($35/oz). From 1962 to 1975, several different companies explored the Goldstrike property. In 1975, Pancana Industries acquired the property. Like Russia and Ukraine, Kazakhstan is one of a few former Soviet republics well-endowed in mineral and energy resources (Fig. 1). Kazakhstan is the second largest newly independent Commonwealth state. It possesses major fuel and power centers, including 20 electric power facilities that operate on the more than 300 kt (330,000 st) of coal extracted daily. These power stations supply Central Asia, the Urals and Western Siberia with much needed electricity. Kazakhstan plays a critical role in Central Asia as it serves as both the regions' economic and political hubs. While Kazakhstan already contains a robust and diversified minerals industry, the government is actively pursuing foreign investment to boost production capacity and improve efficiencies in operations. A primary objective of the Kazak government is the expansion of metal processing facilities to improve the country's long-term export potential. Since 1991, international mining companies have found the investment climate of Kazakhstan relatively favorable. This is due to tremendous efforts by government officials to create sufficient investment legislation and a national minerals policy, while eliminating bureaucratic bottlenecks common to most other former Soviet republics.

Establishment and monitoring of revegetation in areas affected by mining activities is quite often a difficult task. The efficiency of the scheme applied can be substantially improved by using simple adequate indicators so that progress and trends can be plotted, elucidated and assessed over time. Sustainable revegetation management indicators should take into account soil quality and area characteristics, as well as social, economic and political aspects. In the present paper an interactive prototype Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) is presented. The system, based on methodological studies, has been designed to identify and interpret indicators that can be used for the evaluation of revegetation efficiency. It provides a platform for formulating indicators describing biophysical, socio-cultural and economic processes during the entire revegetation period. It integrates modular assessment, database management sub-systems and Geographical Information System (GIS). It is structured in a way that takes into account the project environment, soil quality, land characteristics, data acquisition control, output engines and spatial analysis. The output generates visual quality diagrams and interactive attribute quality maps that elucidate revegetation issues.

The Paso Diablo coal project is located in the Guasare Basin in the northwestern region of Venezuela near the border with Colombia. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare SA, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia and A.A. Antilles Coal (an Arco and AgipCoal joint venture) was formed to develop the Paso Diablo coal reserves for world markets. Regional drilling has indicated a coal resource of more than 6 Gt (6.6 billion st). Further exploration has delineated the Paso Diablo deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated economically minable reserves of this area (200 Mt or 220 million st) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs. Initial coal mining operations began in August of 1987 and the mine is presently producing at a rate of 1.5 Mt/a (1.65 million stpy). The coal is hauled about 85 km (53 miles) to a barge loading terminal at Santa Cruz de Mara using highway-type haul trucks. Geothermal energy is an important energy asset which can play a significant role in providing energy resources to cover energy needs of a country while it can play a primary role in a particular region where it is abundant. Greece is especially rich in geothermal energy. The collision of Euroasiatic and African plates coupled with the strong tectonic tension, particularly in north Greece, resulted in the formation of important geothermal fields of low, medium and high enthalpy. These fields are in the Aegean islands, in central and east Macedonia, in Thrace and in central Greece. This work presents and analyzes information about the drilling activity for exploration and production of geothermal fields of low, medium and high enthalpy in Greece for the past thirty years. The number and type of wells drilled together with the spatial and the yearly distribution are given. Depth data has been analyzed according to the fluid temperatures and to the geological formations. Cost data are presented and analyzed for the total number of wells drilled giving also the cost per meter drilled.

The 1982 recession set the US mining and metals industries reeling. Will the oncoming recession of 1991 hit as hard? Probably not, thanks to a shallower downturn, a weaker dollar and remarkable lower costs. Effects of the last recession That the 1982 recession was traumatic to the American mining and metals industry is an understatement. Quantities of metals consumed dropped. Metals prices fell despite continuing general inflation. The resulting real gross revenues of producers of each of the major metals plunged, in the trough of 1982, to levels one-fourth to two-thirds of those of the peak of 1979 (Table 1). By contrast, most industries in the United States were not hit anywhere nearly as hard. Real GNP, the aggregate of all production, slipped only 1 % from 1979 to 1982. Metals are most sensitive to the business cycle because of their applications. All metals but gold are raw materials to downstream industries. Raw materials are victims of strong fluctuations. This is because buying industries try to hold high inventories in boom periods when goods are in short supply. They reduce inventory levels in buyers markets when suppliers have idle capacity and raw materials are in ample supply.

I have to express my .surprise and must send a note of warning concerning the use of polyurethane foam as described in a paper by R.N. Torbin and R.F. Kovar, entitled "Innovative Shaft Lining Method," published in your February 1989 edition. In September, 1986, 177 miners lost their lives when they were exposed to fumes downwind from a fire in a tunnel lined with polyurethane foam. Whilst polyurethane exhibits reasonable fire retardent properties in small-scale tests, mass use in a tubular configuration, exacerbated by the furnace effect of cross-radiation, can lead to a rapid, uncontrollable conflagration. I do not wish these comments to detract from the engineering achievements of the authors but rather to sound a loud warning as to the application of the system. Any shaft designed for human access- be it for transport or shaft work - and any intake airway, should not consider the use of polyurethane foam. It only needs a slip with a cutting torch or an electric fault to initiate a disaster. Many countries have banned or restricted the use of polyurethane foam in the workings of a mine and maybe alternative foams (e.g. phenolics) can be used or developed

The Department of Mining Engineering, University of Utah, has developed a thermodynamic-based mine ventilation simulator capable of predicting or analyzing the climatic conditions in hot underground environments. This compressible flow model, besides analyzing an operationally and legally-constrained network for mass and pressure balance, also takes into account various existing and anticipated sources of heat. Presently, three major sources of heat have been incorporated in the model. These include autocompression, wall-rock heat, and heat from equipment. A unique feature of this simulator which makes it distinctly different from its existing predecessors is the mathematical technique utilized to solve the network problem. Advantage has been taken of newer, more sophisticated mathematical and programming techniques to accomplish accelerated convergence and network solution generation. This paper describes in detail the development of the simulator including the mathematical relationships and the techniques used to predict the initial and final thermodynamic states of the mine air after its interaction with heat sources. The algorithm for solution to the network, computer model description, and the input data and program execution requirements are presented. A simple hypothetical network is used as a case study to illustrate the application of this simulator.

The reforestation potential of bauxite mining spoils by seeding was examined on this research work. The experimental plot was established on the location Strofi Koukouvista 5, Ghiona Mountain. The experiment consists of 3 species (Pinus nigra, Robinia pseudoacacia, and Spartium junceum) with 4 sowing treatments and 2 sowing seasons (autumn and spring). The treatments were: (1) broadcasting; (2) broadcasting and soil cultivation; (3) broadcasting with straw mulching and straw binding with asphalt emulsion; (4) broadcasting with soil cultivation, straw mulching and straw binding with asphalt emulsion. Third year results show that spring is better than autumn as a sowing season. Only the Spartium junceum species were found to germinate and survive in autumn. The results are better for all the species on the spring seeding. The most effective treatments for Robinia pseudoacacia and Pinus nigra are 3 and 4 while for the Spartium junceum even simple broadcasting shows good results although the best ones are achieved with treatments 2, 3 and 4. The paper?s findings show that reforestation by sowing could be effective for some species but further experimentation with other species is recommended. Concerning Robinia pseudoacacia, testing of different seed preparation treatments is needed in order to maximize the germination of seeds.

This paper presents some of the work associated with the reduction of employee exposure to diesel and blasting contaminants at an underground salt mine. The purpose of the paper is to outline the procedures recommended in resolving the problems associated with these contaminants. The first stage consists of a complete mine ventilation survey. The purpose of the survey is to identify any problems in the mine. The survey consists of air quality, air quality and ventilating pressure measurements taken throughout the mine. After completing the survey, the information is analyzed to identify problem areas and the possible causes. All available solutions to reduce the levels of contaminants are then explored and evaluated for feasibility. The PSU Mine Ventilation Simulator is then used to accurately simulate possible changes to the ventilation system. These ventilation projections are a useful tool to illustrate to the company and union personnel the possible benefits of various ventilation changes. This paper will illustrate the phases involved in making important and sometimes expensive ventilation decisions. Through the cooperative efforts of MSHA, company and union personnel, the levels of contaminants have been reduced by approximately 200 percent. As a result of these ventilation improvements, the company can now safely increase production approximately 25 percent.

"In the mining industry, high-level commitments to adopt sustainability have been made at the corporate levels of mining companies, but there continue to be problems when attempts are made to adopt these high-level sustainability aspirations and translate them into appropriate targets and methods at the more-specific operational level. The integration of sustainability principles into day-to-day minerals processing operational decision-making processes has unique challenges that are not addressed adequately by current tools and methodologies. A proposed methodology to achieve integration of sustainability at the operational level will direct the systematic and rigorous identification and characterisation of sustainability issues in an operation. The methodology allows different approach strategies for assessment, comprehensive accounting of sustainability indicators and has the ability to identify sustainability issues which may have significant business implications that cannot be identified using traditional analysis processes."

Electronic systems introduced for haulage equipment in recent years probably exceed what mine management is prepared to use. Haulpak trucks alone are equipped with General Electric's Statex III drive system controls, Detroit Diesel's DDEC, Cummins' Centry engine management system and the Haulpak Management System (HMS). The future holds promising developments of even more sophisticated electronics that will lead to unmanned truck operation and control. Trolley-assist will finally come into its own due to the importance of environmental issues, as well as the high potential for increased productivity with dramatically lowerfuel consumption. All of these high technology systems do not mean much unless they add value to mining operations. Some of the benefits that can be expected from these systems are reviewed. In the near future, haul truck control and monitoring systems will be fully linked by telemetry to a mine's dispatch system, as well as to its maintenance management information system. The manufacturer and distributor can also be kept in the communications loop, so that they can better serve customer needs. Portable computers will allow technicians to talk to machine systems to quickly locate a problem, look up service information, check what parts are required and electronically order them.

Mining has traditionally been seen as a relatively risky business. Exploration is expensive and the failure rate is high, while start-up costs commonly run to many hundreds of million dollars. To justify the risk and expense, the returns from successful projects must also be high. Accurate estimation of mineral resources and reserves is fundamental to the processes of optimising returns and managing risk in mining developments. Systematic development from initial exploration through a series of development stages enables expenditure and risk to be balanced. As a consequence, large scale modern mine are more akin to manufacturing businesses. This paper examines the life history of a mineral reserve estimate from the perspective of a large mining company against a background of modern estimation and reporting requirements. It will also touch on what constitutes, in the author's opinion, `best' practice in reserve estimation, and how this concept can be spread more widely. There are technical and commercial limitations to using high fluorine copper concentrates in industrial copper smelters. The presence of more than 1,000-ppm fluorine affects the sulfuric acid units generally integrated to copper smelters. Price penalties are normally applied to copper concentrates with high fluorine contents. Several process alternatives to resolve this issue were studied at the Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) Technology Center, Santa Luzia, Brazil. These alternatives included modifications to conventional sulfuric acid plants so that they can use high fluorine concentrates; removal of fluorine-containing minerals by flotation using depressants; selective leaching of fluorine minerals; and sulfuric acid leaching of the copper concentrates. As a result of this research, a hydro¬metallurgical process to remove fluorine and upgrade copper concentrates was developed by the CVRD.

Mining activities involve excavation from underground to the surface of large quantities of ore (e.g. uranium and its disintegration products) (Dumitrescu, 2002, 2007). Material with limited content of uranium, deemed as sterile or low-radioactive is mainly stored on the surface. These wastes modify the configuration of the disposal areas and affect the quality of the environment and the landscape. This paper presents both analytical and numerical models related to stability assessment of uranium mining waste dumps. It is focused on the calibration procedure of the numerical models, in order to minimize risk error during stability prediction and avoid long term environment pollution.

The art of rock mechanics has been applied in various forms since early man first used caves for housing and fashioned rocks into weapons, tools, and utensils. The development of the science of rock mechanics has occurred in a slow but steady fashion due to the complexity of the materials, geometries, and loading conditions involved. It encompasses a great diversity of topics ranging from techniques for rock destruction to those required for rock strengthening or support, and as such enters daily into the life of the mining engineer. Although today rock mechanics can be confidently used in competent geologic structures, the degree of confidence diminishes as the structures become more complex and the number of geologic defects become more numerous. Even so, the principles still give a better estimate of the structural behavior of underground openings than ever before, and the persons responsible for design and control draw freely and often on the subject. Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained.
