Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation's newest precious metals property is located in the old Rochester Mining District approximately twenty-five miles northeast of Lovelock, Nevada. Built at an elevation in excess of 6 000 feet, the Coeur-Rochester gold silver heap leach property encountered cold weather operational problems typical of most northern Nevada heap leach properties, soon after the start-up of operations last fall. Due to the size of the heap area under leach at Rochester, it was decided that 1 the usual practice of spraying to an "ice field" and waiting for the spring thaw was impractical. Further, the delivery schedule for a solution heating system of the size required was unacceptable. Accordingly, Rochester personnel embarked on a program to seek out a leach solution distribution system that would enable an operation through the winter and yet be cost effective. The findings of this program were rather dramatic and, as a result, the whole perception of heap leach solution application at Rochester has changed forever.

Accelerated depreciation is available - a 175% declining balance method with an automatic shift to straight line method at the optimum point in the asset's life. Alternatively, a taxpayer can elect to use the straight line method.

The Morenci Open Pit Mine, located in south-eastern Arizona, is owned and operated by Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. The Mine has been predominantly a rail mine since its origin in 1937. However, beginning in early 1986, a program was initiated to phase out the rail mining operation and replace it with a more flexible and productive truck haulage scheme. This transformation from rail to truck haulage will be accomplished when the current in-pit crushing and conveying project is completed in late 1988.

In this work, the block theory was applied to determine the safe limit of the angle of face slope at Limestone quarry of Assiut cement company in order to decrease the occurrence of dangerous potential key blocks. Four joint sets were observed and measured at the face. Computer program based on the vector analysis technique was developed to determine the removable block codes. Stereographic projection was also used in this work to determine the removable block codes and to calculate the maximum limit for the angle of dip of the free face, which was found to be 77°.

Mill ball charging systems have undergone little change during the past two decades. Most operations utilize a locomotive/ball car combination to load and haul charges from the ball storage bin to the mill charging boxes or, alternatively, transport charges to the charging boxes by means of a ball bucket handled by bridge crane. This paper describes a new concept in ball handling systems that is in operation at the Island Copper Concentrator of Utah Mines, Ltd. at Port Hardy, B.C. This system employs a narrow belt conveyor to convey a weighed charge to each of nine belt unloading stations at the mills. In operation, the system has proved to be practicable, trouble-free and economical of operating labor.

Most of us realize that our nation's roadways are under ever-increasing stresses, from higher traffic counts to increased tire pressures and their resulting loads. At a time when the interstate system as originally envisioned is completed, and the National Highway System is being drawn to replace it, it is appropriate that we examine design and construction methods for the next century. The stone industry shares a common desire to produce high quality, cost-effective roadways that perform over time. The superior sub-grade and road base structure provides for the superior roadway. Since I am neither an engineer nor a contractor, I will not attempt to suggest design or construction methods. What I can do is share my company's experience in supplying road base materials by using a historical perspective in Virginia and some trends in the market that we have observed. Road building and related non-building construction are still far and away our largest markets as an industry. If we can help to improve the end product of our biggest customers, we add value to our own product. Indeed, in a time of budget constraints and competing demands for government dollars, we must show value over the life of a pavement structure to ensure their long-term funding.

Western Oklahoma, with an estimated 48 billion tons of minable gypsum, has one of the largest reserves of high-purity stone in the United States (Figure 1). Gypsum beds of the Permian Blaine Forma¬tion are 10 to 30 feet thick in the southwest and northwest regions, and the Permian Cloud Chief Gypsum is 20 to 90 feet thick in the west-central region (Ham, 1962; Ham and Curtis, 1958; Scott and Ham, 1957). Republic Gypsum Company, in the southwest part of the State, is Oklahoma's second-largest gypsum producer. Since opening its plant in 1964, the company has steadily increased production and now accounts for about 15 percent of the State's annual output. The plant and quarry are 15 miles west of Altus at Duke, a small commu¬nity on the Hollis and Eastern Railroad in northwestern Jackson County.

Upgrading molybdenite ore can be technically difficult and expensive if talc is a major impurity in the ore. The layered structure of molybdenite and talc decreases the surface specificity of floatation and suppression agents, thereby making molybdenite ore beneficiation inefficient if under some wet processing methods. However, oxidic talc surfaces may be distinct from the sulfidic or oxysulfidic molybdenite surfaces, such distinction related to electron work functions and/or densities of electron donors/acceptors sites. If such differences are present, the upgrading of finely sized molybdenite ore by dry triboelectrostatic methods may hold advantages over traditional wet methods.

DOUG HALBE: I've decided that we're going to change tactics here and we're going to be nice to people from now on. [Co-chair makes gesture of intense disbelief; laughter] I've also decided who's not going to be a co-chair next year. [laughter] We thought we'd get a couple of experts for our next presentation: some people with a lot of experience. We've asked them to tell us some of the things that all of you operators out there might be able to apply immediately to your plant. Our next two speakers have a tremendous amount of experience, and I think you'll find what they're going to say is highly pertinent to most plants. I looked through their paper and found some things that I could have used in the plants I operated in the past. Our first speaker is Terry McNulty. A lot of you know Terry. He was with Anaconda for a number of years as director of research. He then was president of Hazen Research. I'm going to continue with our new custom of saying nice things. Terry is the guy that I call when I don't know something, and he's always got the answer. SPEAKER: Who do you work for, Doug? [laughter] DOUG HALBE: Remember that we're being nice to people here, Joe. I know that's a stretch. [laughter] TERRY McNULTY: Thank you, Doug. I'm a little bit mystified by this sudden switch of tactics just before I get to the podium. Doug's been a good friend for a lot of years so I guess I do have to be nice. I won't say anything deprecatory about him, but I would have to comment that the observations made by earlier speakers have been far too generous. [laughter] During nine years of consulting as a mineral processor and extractive metallurgist, I have often conducted audits of the performance of client's plants. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a testing program to assess the effects of lateral loading on various standing supports used in underground coal mines. This study is not intended to endorse a particular type of standing supports nor to provide a comparison between different types of standing supports. This paper aims to measure the lateral loading capacity of two types of standing supports and evaluate how it affects their vertical loading capacity and yielding mechanisms. The study utilizes the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at NIOSH Pittsburgh. Type-1 support is characterized by telescopic tubes made from ASTM A-513 steel with a specified locking mechanism, and Type-2 support comprises a single component constructed from ASTM A500 Welded Grade C pipe. Vertical load tests were carried out to assess the designed performance of Type-1 and Type-2 props. Type-1 props demonstrated a "constant yielding" behavior, achieving an ultimate capacity of up to 140 kips. Type-2 props showed a "load shedding" behavior, reaching peak verti- cal loads of up to 191 kips. Buckling analysis revealed that Type-1 props were not designed to buckle, and Type-2 props failed due to buck- ling rather than material yielding. Under vertical pre-loading, lateral loading tests showed that Type-1 props can withstand about 9 kips, and Type-2 props can withstand about 10.79 kips of lateral load. This represents roughly 6% of their vertical loading capacities. Testing props under lateral loads in addition to their intended vertical loads showed that the lateral loads could influence their loading mechanisms. Type-1 props did not exhibit the expected "constant yielding" behavior under lateral load but instead showed "load shedding" decreasing their rated vertical capacity by 70%. At high vertical pre-loading, Type-2 props demonstrated "constant yielding" behavior instead of the anticipated "load shedding," leading to a 60% reduction in their rated vertical capacity. These findings provide valuable insights into the behavior of these props under different loading conditions, aiding in their efficient use and design in underground mining operations.

This study emphasizes the importance of understanding the factors that influence the throwing of flyrock in mining operations, a significant hazard to both workers and nearby structures. Moreover, it highlights how blasting engineers, when estimating flyrock occurrences and their travel distance, typically rely on input parameters such as powder factor (PF), hole length (HL), subdrill (SD), spacing (S), hole diameter (D), burden (B) and stemming length (ST), while overlooking crucial factors like velocity of detonation (VOD) and charge per bank cubic meter (CPBCM). Through analysis using support vector machine (SVM) modeling in MATLAB, the study underscores the impact of including or excluding VOD and CPBCM on flyrock throw distance.

The packed column flotation cell is an awesome separation device. Virtually unknown and untested, the packed column flotation cell is one of the ten most important developments in mineral processing of the 21st century. Though experimental and industrial data is limited, it is clear that the packed column flotation cell is two to three orders of magnitude better than the conventional flotation cell and one to one and a half orders of magnitude better than the open column flotation cell. With the modern packing taking up less than one percent of the packed column, column blocking does not occur. For a packed column operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the estimated mean time between failures (MTBF) is one hundred thousand hours or roughly twelve years. With no moving parts, lower maintenance costs, lower power consumption and inherent operating stability, the packed column is a powerful separating machine. Because there is little meaningful data for comparing the packed column to the conventional flotation cell and the open column flotation cell, much of the material presented in this paper are guesstimates. They are disinterested guesstimate made by the authors after extensive theoretical work and reviewing the known facts. In the authors' opinion, no available data contradicts the guesstimate. The authors expect that there may be errors as large as three hundred percent. Even three hundred percent errors will not change the conclusions of this paper. The packed column flotation cell is a formidable separating device. To understand the problems of comparing the three types of flotation cells, consider the fact that the three cells may have different modes of separation. One of the authors, Meloy, believes that in the conventional cell, the primary particle separation takes place in the liquor with secondary separation taking place in the froth, while for open column flotation, all the separation takes place in the froth. However, he believes that in the packed column a large part of the separation may take place on the walls of the packing. If this is true, not only is the method of modeling each type of cell different, but the method of particle selection in the cell is different. This means that one type of cell may be better at differentiating between two different types of particles. There is a growing body of literature on open and packed column flotation. This paper is concerned primarily with the kaolin deposits extending northwestward from Macon, Ga., which is in the western part of the Irwinton district (fig. 1). These deposits are in a belt of kaolin districts extending along the inner edge of the Coastal Plain from the Aiken district, S. C., southwestward to the vicinity of Macon, a distance of 150 miles (250 km). Large kaolin deposits associated with bauxite also occur in an extension of this belt southwestward from Macon as far as the Eufaula district, Ala., a distance of about 130 miles (208 km). The belt splits away from the inner edge of the Coastal Plain in a southwesterly direction from Macon; the Eufaula district is approximately 50 miles (80 km) south of the contact of Coastal Plain sedimentary rocks with much older crystalline rocks. Structure The strata of Cretaceous and Tertiary age containing the kaolin deposits all dip gently seaward irom the landward edge of the sedimentary rocks. The dip of the Cretaceous strata is about 25 feet per mile (4.9 m per km). The dip of Tertiary strata is about 15 feet per mile (2.1 m per km). In places, the Tertiary strata overlap the older sedimentary beds and rest directly on the crystalline rocks. Faults having a few feet of displacement have been observed in several mines, but no major faulting is known in the area.

In simpler times, construction was a cooperative undertaking. The frontier tradition of barn-raising is the construction equivalent of the academic ideal of a single student seated on a log with Horace Greeley. In a more complex world, ideals become more elusive. Still, it was only a generation ago that toll revenue bond financed projects generally involved a team composed of investment bankers, engineers, and construction contractors, who all shared a common objective -- to create something useful, at minimum cost and in minimum time, with fair compensation to all involved. In an increasingly contentious public climate, the team has too frequently been splintered into separate camps of owners, engineers, and contractors, who have lost the old objective of creation and have, under the guidance and control of the lawyers, substituted two new primary objectives: 1. To protect one's own skin. 2. To detect and punish culpable negligence of one of the other parties. This process has become so ludicrous that a number of thoughtful observers from all of the camps (including even some lawyers) have come to recognize that there must be a better way to undertake construction works than to use them as wrestling arenas. The road to improved contracting methods starts with mutual understanding of each other's problems and viewpoints. To this end, discussions such as this RETC session make a useful contribution. To

Performance monitoring, operational practices and ongoing collection of geologic data in open pit slopes all provide valuable information for quantifying potential steepening of subsequent slopes. Mining at the Goldstrike open pit has been ongoing since the early 1980’s, with its share of slope instabilities. In areas where slopes have remained stable, consideration has been made for potential slope steepening of final walls. With the proper available equipment, steepening of bench face angles via pre-split blasting is not an uncommon method for steepening of inter-ramp slope angles. As an alternative at Goldstrike, the commonly used Modified Ritchie Criteria for empirical catch bench width has been adjusted resulting in quantified, rock specific formulas for bench width and rock fall berm placement. The result is an inter-ramp slope angle increase of 2 degrees on a 300m high slope, without the necessary purchases and procedural changes that would be required for pre-split drilling and blasting. The result has shown significant net benefits through reduction in mined waste tons and an increase in gold reserves. Location The Goldstrike open pit is located on the Carlin Trend gold belt in northeastern Nevada USA (Figure 1). The mine has produced over 43 million ounces (1.2M kg) of gold during the past 30 years. Engineering Geology Stratigraphy Figure 2 is a stratigraphic section of the rocks in the Goldstrike open pit. Quaternary alluvium and Miocene materials typically are poorly indurated stiff soils and are not present in all locations. Bedrock units consist of siltstones, mudstones, sandstones and cherts. From top down the major units exposed in the open pit are the Vinini Formation, the Rodeo Creek Unit, and the Popovich Formation. In general, rock mass strength increases with depth.

"INTRODUCTION The recent drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a co-product of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut-off 10% of the world’s vanadium output. Earlier in February, 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation. This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries namely, China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 98% of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains by far the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage. This paper summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal. TREND IN VANADIUM EXPLORATION The most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grade than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers. The 10% shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the State of Bahia in Brazil, which commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to reach design capacity of 11,400 tonnes of vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) by the end of 2015. The estimated production1 for 2015 is 6,500 tonnes of V2O5 at a target production cost of $3.60/lb. This is the first vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in over 35 years."

Road construction in the near future will require contractors to guarantee that a project will remain trouble free for years after the project has been completed. These guarantees will challenge aggregate producers to become technically proficient in judging performance of their products. Testing procedures are described that may be used to predict performance of concrete and asphalt pavements before being committed into a construction project, and may also be used as quality assurance tools during construction to monitor performance as construction proceeds.
