In order to keep good air condition in any specific branch such as coal face and/or heading in an underground coal mine, effective factors of all the branches with respect to the specified branch have been investigated, using computer simulation. Main results of the paper are as follows; 1) A branch in a network is classified to one of three classes of effectiveness to increase, to decrease and not to change airflow rate in the specific branch by altering aerodynamic resistance in the branch. 2) Distribution of position of branches, belonging to each class, related to a specific branch is one of the macroscopic characteristic of a network which is the inherent property of every network. 3) A relation of the aerodynamic resistances of any two branches to keep a constant airflow rate in the specified branch is shown as a monotonous curve. 4) Ventilation transition diagram with the rate of airflow in the two branches as coordinates, and for different rates of airflow in the specific branch as the parameter, is found to be straight lines. 5) Existing range of airflow rates In the specified branch is given as a parameter in the enclosed area in the ventilation transition diagram. Moreover, an expert system to assist ventilation control using a transition diagram of airflow rate is introduced in this paper.

Historian and storyteller, Duane Smith, will be the keynote speaker at the National Mining Hall of Fame's 10th anniversary induction banquet on Saturday, Sept. 6,1997 in the Museum Convention Center at Leadville, CO.Smith is a professor of history and southwest studies at Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO. He is also an award-winning author of 28 books about the West and mining. Hall of Fame Board Chairman Richard Moolick said the induction banquet event will mark the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum's 10th anniversary in its Leadville facility, a century-old Victorian schoolhouse. Karl Elers, chairman of Battle Mountain Gold in Houston, TX, will be the master of ceremonies. He is a member of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum's board of directors. The six inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be enshrined by Thomas Falkie, president of Berwind Natural Resources of Philadelphia, PA. He is also chairman of the Mining Hall's board of governors. The six inductees will join 132 mining greats who were previously honored. The black-tie (optional) banquet will be highlighted this year by guests who prefer to don 1890s dress for the occasion in the old silver-mining boomtown. A cocktail reception and open house will precede the banquet, with tours of the district and special events to follow on Sun- day, Sept. 7.

In the hierarchy of performing mine planning tasks, production scheduling is naturally at the bottom. Yet good production scheduling is probably the most demanding and difficult task to achieve for various reasons. Being the last task in the mine planning hierarchy, a proper production schedule must not only conform to both the long-range and the short- range mine plans but also satisfy many practical details that are unique to day-to-day operations. For example, the averages which were good enough for both long-range and short- range mine planning are no longer good enough for production scheduling. Instead, the variations become the overriding concern. The answer must also be obtained quickly and on time, thus adding another dimension to the overall problem. Because of these considerations, many production scheduling problems have been begging for solution during the past decade. Many attempts were made to solve the production scheduling problems in the past using computers and the available operations research (OR) techniques, particularly among academic groups. However, it is probably true that, compared with the current full-time computer usage in long-range and short-range mine planning, very little computer usage is being made in production scheduling to date.

The White Mesa uranium/vanadium mill is six miles south of Blanding, UT, on the Colorado Plateau, which has historically spawned more than 200 uranium mines. As uranium prices approached an all-time high during the mill planning period, Energy Fuels Nuclear Inc. anticipated the reopening of many of these mines, whose low grade ore suddenly looked economic. The company located the White Mesa mill close to these mines, to minimize hauling distances to the mill and give vendors added incentive to reopen or expand mine operations. A receptive local community, a relatively unencumbered trip through the regulatory maze, and some mill circuit innovations all helped to make the White Mesa mill a well functioning reality. From a strategic standpoint, and to begin ore stockpiling as early as possible, Energy Fuels constructed two ore buying stations and began receiving ore in early 1977. The buying stations were located at Hanksville and at what is now the Blanding mill site. Ore receipts at Hanksville did not materialize as anticipated and the facility has since been closed. The Blanding ore buying station is now an integral part of the milling operation. All ores, whether company, vendor, or for toll milling, are received at the Blanding station. The Blanding site was central to the plateau mines, and was well received by area residents, who encouraged the introduction of industry to the area. Residents viewed mill construc¬tion as an economic blessing and were prepared to accept the associated im¬pacts. Energy Fuels hired as many local people as possible for mill opera¬tions.

In 1911, Miami Copper Co. began a block caving operation at its Miami, AZ property. A gravity mill was used to separate copper minerals from the Pinal Schist host rock. Until 1932, the mill tailings were deposited by the upstream method using perimeter launders and spigot valves in six canyons adjacent to the mill. In 1928, the larger and more distant Solitude tailing pile was developed. By 1932, it was receiving all tailings. In 1925, Miami Copper converted the gravity mill to flotation with sulfide copper recoveries. From 1934 to 1943, Miami, Copper ran a leach-precipitate float (LPF) circuit on mined ore and, in 1943, began sulfuric acid in-place leaching of a portion of the caved area formed by block caving. The pregnant solutions were collected underground and pumped to the LPF precipitating drums to harvest copper. In 1954, the company started mining low-grade ore. This led to the running an old LPF plant on select mill tailings from April 1957 to March 1959. In 1959, block-cave mining ceased. Solution mining became the only source of production using a launder precipitation plant. In the mid-1960s, Miami Copper merged with the Tennessee Corp. In the latter part of the decade, Cities Service Co. bought the combined properties. In 1976, Cities Service commissioned a 15-t/d (16.5-stpd) solvent extraction electrowinning(SX-EW) facility at its Miami copper property to replace the precipitation plant. In 1982, Occidental Petroleum Co. bought Cities Service. In 1983, the Miami operations were sold to Newmont Mining Corp. and set up as a subsidiary company, Pinto Valley Copper Corp. Finally, in 1987, Newmont Mining spun off a combined Pinto Valley and San Manuel unit as Magma Copper Co.

Transporting goods from producers to consumers is a fundamental part of the US economy. The demand for transportation closely reflects the economic health and well-being of the nation's industrial, commercial, and agricultural sectors. The inland waterway barge industry has traditionally played a key role in transporting needed commodities to industries on an economical basis. Barges account for 10% of the domestic intercity tonnage carried by all transportation modes. Water carriers operating on inland waterways hauled more than 450 Mt (500 million st) of cargo in 1980-up from 428 Mt (472 million st) in 1970. Inland Waterway Shipments Metallic and nonmetallic minerals comprise one of the largest commodity groups moved on inland waterways. As illustrated in Table 1, metallic and nonmetallic mineral shipments accounted for more than 69 Mt (77 million st), or nearly 15% of all commodities shipped in 1980. Putting this tonnage in perspective, coal and petroleum represent the two largest commodities moved on inland waterways. In 1980, petroleum and petroleum products accounted for 138 Mt (152 million st), or 28% of all commodities shipped. Similarly, coal represented 120 Mt (132 million st), or 25% or all commodities shipped. Even though shipments of metallic and nonmetallic minerals are smaller than coal and petroleum, they still account for a sizeable portion transported. The inland barge industry moves a variety of metallic and nonmetallic minerals ranging from manganese ores to building cement. Minerals transported by barge include: • iron, copper, bauxite, and manganese ores for metal production; • lime and limestone for construction and electric utility scrubbers; • phosphate rock, natural fertilizers, and gypsum for agricultural needs; • sand, gravel and crushed rock, clay, asphalt, tar, and pitches, and building cement for construction purposes; and • a host of other minerals to meet industrial needs. A few mineral commodities are responsible for a large proportion of waterborne mineral shipments.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the leaching of phosphate values from Florida phosphatic clay wastes using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the leaching agent and methanol as the solvent. Acid-alcohol leaching studies were done using research-grade apatite to investigate potential causes of flow extractions. It was found that a barrier layer formed on the surface of the apatite. Initial discovery of the barrier layer was made by analyzing pure apatite samples before and after leaching using an optical microscope. Subsequent Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analyses proved the coating was calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4•1/2H2O) and that unreacted apatite existed beneath the coating. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs depict the CaSO4• 1 /2H20 morphology as long slender crystals adhering to the apatite surface. It was also shown that grinding the leached tailings and leaching again in the H2SO4-methanol system resulted in additional phosphate extraction.

Before the first shovelful of dirt is removed from a developing mining property, a wide range of data must be collected, organized and analyzed. Among the key steps in this process are: • Visualization of the deposit from drill hole data and geologic interpretation, using all available information, including surface geology, geochemistry and geophysics. • Drawing of vertical and horizontal sections. • Construction of a 3D solid model of the deposit. • Contouring of deposit outlines and geological structure until the model represents best estimate of reality. • Estimation of grade and quality distribution. • Calculation of reserves. • Examination of possible mining methods. • Determination of economic feasibility. Many techniques are available to aid in this process of mine project feasibility analysis, from quick pencil calculations to sophisticated computer methods. However, time races faster in the complex modem business world than it did 50 years ago. Tried and true pencil methods take too much time. Opportunity may pass a mine developer by while a property is still in the first stages of analysis. In the days of hand techniques, initial analysis of the economic feasibility of a mining project usually stopped with reserve calculations and broad mine planning. Further planning was not done or was done only for the short term. Manual techniques require too much time and manpower to evaluate a longterm mining program. Mining-industry recognition of computer utility has increased. Most companies now use computers in technical applications and could not conceive of working without them. Building initial computer models of a deposit may take nearly as long as hand techniques. But the payback comes when changes are needed and a variety of mine plans are quickly tested.

The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has developed the Mine Emergency Responsiveness Development (MERD) program to improve the reaction and re¬sponse of mine personnel in mine emergency situations. The MERD program simulates problems that may occur in underground mine fires and explosions or surface mine accidents. Since its inception in 1982, the MERD program has been presented to MSHA, industry, labor and state government personnel. This versatile program is easily adapted to suit various training requirements. In 1992, a Mine Simulation Laboratory was built at the Natinal Mine Health and Safety Academy, Beckley, WV, to improve training for mine emergencies and prevention and fighting of mine fires. This facility is capability of simulating a coal mine and metal-non-metal mine for training purposes. It has been included in the MERD program to provide realistic and practical training for mine rescue teams and MERD partici¬pants in advanced mine emergency operations. The objectives of the MERD program are to improve the organizational and management skills of the participants in a rescue and recovery operation and provide a better understanding of the importance that various roles have on the overall organization and the importance of their interaction. The MERD program is not intended to provide the participants with all of the abilities and knowledge required to respond effectively to a mine emergency. Rather, it is intended to give the participant an opportunity to experience the emotions, frustrations and successes of a mine emergency without having to actually be involved in one. The participants are expected to return to their regular jobs with a greater appreciation of the environment in which emergency operations take place. Experience in mine emergencies is extremely limited in the industry today. The participants are encouraged to use the knowledge gained during a MERD program to develop or enhance a mine emergency plan suitable to their needs.

Two years ago, AlliedSignal embarked on a journey to improve QUALITY. However, the focus of this endeavor was on the CUSTOMER and not the traditional product focus. It wasn't that a focus to improve product quality wasn't fruitful in the past. We've practiced it in the chemical industry for many years with significant results. But our industry today is in a survival mode and yesterday's way of doing business is simply not good enough. In the mining industry, we have to make lug strides in how we do business or face losing our customer base. As you are well aware, other parts of the world are importing our technology at a rapid rate. We must work smarter to stay ahead of our customers ever more demanding need for higher quality at lower prices. With this as a driver, throughout the Corporation we reviewed in depth how we support our customers to keep them competitive and sought to eliminate work which did not help them reach this goal. Our first year of emphasis was on tools: how to hold meetings, gather data, and how to make decisions. This sounds very basic, I know, but you can't begin to imagine how productive meetings can become when you start with an agenda and prework delivered days in advance, and agree at the start of the meeting what should get accomplished. In the second year, we applied these tools to our work processes. We mapped how we do our work, scrutinized each step for value to the customer, and then set to work on how we could do things better. The areas we concentrated on were customer linked commercialization of new products, manufacturing and materials management. Our discussion today will focus on the commercialization of new products.

Based on the premise that understanding the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal will lead to reducing coal dust problems in mines, a thorough study of the mechanics of crack propagation in coal was undertaken. Two approaches were considered in an attempt to understand and quantify the fracture process as it relates to fine fragment formation. In one approach, theoretical models are used which describe the size of the fracture process zone which may relate to the amount of structural damage and fine fragment formation on the new crack surface. The other approach is based on the relationship between crack tip stress intensity and new surface appearance for mixed mode crack propagation. Preliminary observations with a scanning electron microscope support the premise that fine fragment formation is related to fracture surface appearance and fracture initiation conditions. An experimental program designed to supply the input parameters for these approaches is presently underway. The experimentation features mixed mode fracture toughness testing, using a special mixed mode testing rig, and fracture velocity measurements with a crack propagation gage. The interpretation of this data via the approaches discussed will provide further under- standing of the mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal.

INTRODUCTION Selective Reduction of Nickel in Oxidized Ores Oxidized nickel ores, either garnieritic or lateritic, contain much more iron than nickel. The regular carbon reduction in an electric furnace is operated in such a manner that the greater part of iron oxides is reduced simultaneously with nickel oxide, resulting in a low nickel content ferronickel. In order that the nickel content of residual slag may be suitably low, -excess carbon must be fed so that the carbon content of the ferronickel thus obtained is that of casting iron. The metal also contains other impurities such as silicon, chrome, etc. In order to convert the casting iron into slightly carburized ferronickel with high nickel content, the greater part of the carbon and more than half the iron contained therein must be oxidized by means of oxygen. Energy is thus consumed as carbon, and power to reduce iron oxides, and more energy is consumed as oxygen to re-oxidize the iron contained. This method can be economically adopted for nickel ores with grades ranging around 2. 5 to 370, but it gets excessively costly when nickel grade falls below these values. This is why, for nickel ores with low nickel grades and high iron content, studies were conducted to develop a selective reduction process which, while reducing only a small part of the iron oxide, would provide efficient reduction of nickel oxide. DOUG HALBE: Our next topic is one that I would think everyone might want to contribute to. I'm sure everyone here has had some experience in this area. If you haven't, I'd suspect you've never really run a mill. This is what we call "Horrible Spill Areas We Had When We Started Up the Plant and How We Fixed Them." Our next speaker has had a really great operating career. He had many years with Newmont in the Carlin area, and now he's executive vice president and chief operating officer of Independence Mining Company: Jim Komadina. I don't have to be nice to the speakers anymore, do I? [laughter] You may wonder why we picked Jim Komadina to give this talk. I was involved many years ago in the start-up of Newmont7s Gold Quarry plant. Jim held quite a responsible position there. I'm not going to say anymore, but I have in the back of my mind this picture of the pump floor and a rowboat and a guy rowing around on the pump floor. [laughter] Jim, was that you? [laughter] JIM KOMADINA: Probably. I wasn't responsible for the design. [laughter] Actually it's amazing. I've seen a lot of these plants and actually had the opportunity to walk around them, so when I say this, "Horrible spills I have seen and done," it's because I've been responsible for more than my fair share of them. But having seen a lot of spills, I will present a little bit of wisdom about how to prevent them.

Coal mining is one of the major sources of methane release to the atmosphere by human industrial activities and is believed to contribute to -30% of the total methane emissions from industrial activities. In 1993, world saleable black coal production, attained almost 3.5 billion tonnes from which around 65% was produced underground. Coal in underground mines can contain high quantities of methane and some deep coal seams have methane content as high as 50 cubic meters per tonne of coal. Gas is re- leased during coal mining from the mined seam and in a higher degree from the neighboring unmined seams and gas bearing strata which are fractured as mining advances. This paper de- scribes a study which was undertaken to estimate the extent of methane emissions from coal mining in the world. Measured emission related data were collected from most underground coal producing countries in the world. The data included methane flows in the ventilation system, methane flows in gas drainage system, in-situ gas content, methane utilization and coal production. More comprehensive data were collected from a range of gassy and non-gassy Australian mines. Residual gas content of samples from run of mine were also measured. Using the Australian data, mathematical expressions were established to evaluate methane emissions as a function of coal production and in-situ gas content for other mines. These emission models were then used to evaluate the emissions for the countries or coal basins without measured emission data. Trends in methane emissions from underground mining for the year 2000 and beyond were also estimated.

Phosphorus may be incorporated into sedimentary rocks in at least four different ways: (1) by the accumulation of detrital mineral fragments, (2) by the accumulation of phosphatic organic debris, (3) by diagenesis and (4) perhaps by the primary precipitation of calcium phosphate. Based-on the petrographic examination of Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments from the northern and central parts of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, Diagenesis is the most important of these mechanisms. Both syndiagenesis and epidiagenesis are required to explain the origin of all the diagenetic phosphate mineral species which occur in the northern and central parts of the coastal plain. Syndiagenesis produced much of the coastal plain's apatite. It was operative below the sediment-water interface while the substrate was being compacted. Compaction forced pore waters, which were enriched in phosphate by the decomposition of organic matter, upward through calcareous sediments. The PO43- radicle replaced the CO23- and calcareous nodules, pellets and shell fragments were converted to apatite. Epidiagenetic reactions occurred in the subaerial environment where downward percolating meteoric waters carried phosphate in solution to cites where cation activity was sufficiently high to form new minerals. Vivianite may form where ferrous iron is available and wavellite and variscite may form in the presence of aluminum rich minerals. Textural evidence suggests that many of the reactions were repeated. The present day appearance of apatite, vivianite, wavellite and variscite in the coastal plain may represent several generations of diagenesis.

Pit and underground mine operators typically use a lot of big equipment tires. Just as typically, they spend a lot of money they shouldn't on these tires. That's because tire use and maintenance are not given enough attention. That often occurs because mine management and personnel do not know the basic facts of tire use and care. If a piece of large equipment is damaged or ruined, a good explanation better he forthcoming. A ruined tire is often just a shoulder shrug. But that sort of fatalistic acceptance can cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year extra for big equipment tires. That does not have to be. There are some basic tire considerations that, if followed, will extend tire life and lower tire costs. Most companies have the inevitable conflict between the production department, which resists any restrictions that may reduce productivity, and the maintenance department. Production success is based on meeting a schedule of yards moved, while maintenance success is based on availability and equipment cost. When production falls behind schedule and equipment speeds are increased, maintenance may soon find its tire costs rapidly increasing, unless everyone understands the tires' vulnerability to damage. Unless the production department understands the problem, or restraint is applied by top management, costs may become exorbitant. At one job site, tire costs alone exceeded $250,000, to move 55 dam3 (72 000 yd3) of dirt on an 11-km cycle. The operation temporarily caught up with its schedule, but tire costs and attendant downtime soon made this a not-for-profit exercise. Because an operator must always attempt to move payload at the lowest cost, there are cases when higher than normal tire costs must be accepted. For example, in pioneering work with tandem engine scrapers, steep grades shorten tire life to less than normal. But the steep grades make shorter haul cycles possible, yielding more trips per hour than alternative earth-moving methods.

INTRODUCTION Evaluation and optimization of mineral processes has been going on since the the first plant started hundreds of years ago. A huge mass of knowledge has been collected since then. The main problem with this type of empirical knowledge of complex processes is that it is very difficult to formulate and document. The methods used for collecting the knowledge is not consistent but-varies with "he person" that does it. In the late 60's and early 70's efforts were made to use computer based techniques to evaluate process performance and to formulate process models for mineral processes. Models were developed, such as the flotation model by R. P. King (1973) which is still used to simulate flotation circuit behaviour. During the 70's. a number of mass balancing packages were developed together with process simulation packages. The industrial sector also made great efforts to develop and utilize computer based systems for process control and evaluation. The expert system that BOLIDEN created in 1974 at the Kristineberg plant was a remarkable achievement considering the hardware (CDC 3600) and the software tools (FORTRAN) available at that time. The main obstacle to successfully implement optimizing computer control of mineral processes was and still is the limited knowledge about the dynamics of complex processes. There are, however. many activities going on in this area today and it seems that the technology is very near a break through. Process evaluation is the most important tool to improve and maintain the optimal performance of a process. Today dedicated computer based techniques are used for fast and reliable screening of the processes. The stages in process evaluation consist of three basic steps: - Data acquisition, manually or by data logging. - Data refining, mass balancing and parameter calculation. - Data evaluation. The refined data can then be used for model construction/calibration and subsequently for process simulation. The US Bureau of Mines undertook a study of those factors influencing worker escape from an outby coal mine fire. The results of this investigation were two-fold. First, those factors affecting escape from a mine fire were defined, and second, the relationships between these factors were identified. Although the individual components had been studied before, little information was available on their interdependence. Fault tree analysis was used to evaluate the miner escape scenario. After constructing the fault tree, a two-phase analysis of the tree was conducted. During the first phase, the minimal cutsets of the fault tree were identified and ranked. These sets were the smallest sequence of events leading to fatalities during the fire. This ranking revealed that reduced evacuation delays, improved self-rescuer training, and improved stopping construction were important in controlling fatalities during escape from the mine fire. The second phase involved additional analyses of the fault tree. These evaluations were started by first determining occurrence probabilities for each event in the fault tree. Two types of sensitivity analyses were then conducted. The first analysis dealt with changes in event probabilities and their impact on the likelihood of fatalities. The final sensitivity analysis considered dramatic reductions in the probability of fire fatalities. This revealed what event probability values were necessary to reach this level. These results have revealed various remedial actions that could be used to improve the survivability of an outby mine fire.

Starting up a fan or modifying its setting point either by rotational speed variations or blade angle changes, obviously results in new ventilation conditions in the network, which is, of course, the object of the operation. However, since transient phenomena may then occur, particularly in complex networks, there may be a need to simulate these situations prior to any action. This is all the more true, if we are dealing with a multiple interactive fan sys- tem. Simulations with a transient model have shown that the flow in certain airways could be temporarily reversed due to the pres- sure variations that reach both its ends with a different time lag. This phenomenon may cause dangerous situations to occur in cases of fire or outburst of methane. It is also true that the air flow could be reversed in secondary and less powerful fans, while still rotating in the normal direction. The study and the experimental investigation of the extension of the reverse flow characteristic is therefore justified from two points of view : • a numerical simulation model for transient flow conditions must be capable of handling temporary reversed flows, and thus have appropriate fan characteristic curves available over the entire operating domain; • while operating fans, reversed flows should be avoided or at least reduced. Therefore, the design of start-up procedures or real time control algorithms should take these phenomena into account. A particular interesting application is the operating of two fans in parallel. In order to investigate experimentally the characteristic curves of a fan under reversed flow conditions a small scale model was built. This facility was designed in such a manner that it was possible to carry out experiments concerning flow reversions and to try out sequential start-up procedures for two fans in parallel.
