The bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans triggers the surface modification of sulfide minerals to provide hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity for the flotation of sphalerite and galena. The effects of initial cell concentration, period of biotreatment and pulp density on the floatability of the minerals are discussed. With galena, flotation enhancement obtained through sulfuric acid treatment was retarded by biotreatment at all cell concentrations due to chemical effects. Such a decrease occurred for sphalerite only at cell concentrations sufficiently high for bacterial attachment to the mineral surface. The variables affecting surface modification (and, thus, flotation response of the minerals) include the cell concentration used for bacterial conditioning, the period of biotreatment and the pulp density. Although bacterial growth during biotreatment was observed even in the absence of nutrients, such growth was more common in the sphalerite suspension than in the galena suspension. Cell protein estimations suggest that more cells are attached on galena than on sphalerite. Probable reaction mechanisms associated with bacterial modification are discussed.

There has been some confusion over the selection of discount rates when performing stochastic simulations of a project's net present value (NPV) using risk- adjusted discounting techniques. Some argue that lower discount rates should be used when performing stochastic valuation simulations. This creates higher NPV values and improves the attractiveness of a project. Others argue that the discount rate should not be lowered for these simulations. This paper exposes the source of this confusion. It demonstrates that stochastic simulations do not remove the risk inherent in a project and, therefore-do not improve a project's value to the risk-averse investor. Risk-adjusted discount rates should, therefore, not be adjusted downward when performing stochastic NPV simulations. Stochastic simulations are, however, shown to he useful in several aspects of project valuation.

The so called 'SISCOM' is a General Purpose, microprocessor-based Monitoring and Control System, developed by AITEMIN to meet the requirements of Spanish Mining Industry in - the field of automation and data -transmission. Typical applications -are automatic control of pumps, compressors, fans and conveyors, as well as environmental monitoring and production monitoring. In relation with the last, the - System has been succesfully installed in a full section roadheader and in a mechanised steep coal face. In both cases, the main objective is to get information about running times, down times and causes, -and monitoring of other important parameters such as ventilation, methane content, power consumption..etc. Measurements concerning the face behaviour from a geomechanical point of view are also monitored. These are different pressures and stresses. All data is transmitted to the - surface and on-line analysed by a -desk-top microcomputer. The paper shows the system structure and the requirements that have - been considered on its design. Attention is given to the mechanical data acquisition problem, involving special development of some transducers. The information provided by the surface microcomputer is shown and its utility discussed.

Underground mining is relatively safe today, but no technique or equipment is completely fool proof and 100% reliable. The only sure way to prevent accidental death or injury to underground workers is to remove them completely from the hazardous environment. This alternate approach to underground work is now feasible. Tunnelling and mining systems can be built that could be remotely controlled by men operating consoles in a surface control room. This concept, called a teleminer, would use recently developed remote control technology to remove man from underground work but still give him the capability to remotely operate mining and excavating equipment as if he were actually in the working area. It is appropriate to present this concept in the session "Environmental Controls" because the rationale for environmental control in underground areas can be significantly modified if man is excluded from the underground operation. The development of teleminers cannot only reduce or eliminate most of the requirements for conventional environmental control, but it can also create new and powerful techniques for rapid tunnelling and excavation. TELEMINER CONCEPT The concept of remotely controlled mining machines is neither new nor untried.(1)(2) Conventional remotely controlled mining equipment employs the standard techniques of extending the controls of the equipment to a remote console. For example, the rotary cutters on a remotely controlled tunnelling machine are started or stopped by a human operator turning a switch on the remote control console.

In this investigation, the differences in the absorption spectra of etheramines, fatty amines and condensates, mostly present as acetates, from several suppliers are characterized by means of infrared spectrometry. Sharp differences were observed in the absorption spectra of three types of amines and derivatives. Etheramines show a characteristic and well-defined peak at 1,114 cm-1. This peak is due to the ether C-O group and differentiates etheramines from the other classes. The absence of such a peak indicates that the species is not an etheramine. The distinction between condensates and fatty amines is made by the presence of a sharp peak around 3,200 cm-1. This peak is probably due to the proximity of the N-H amine groups and C=O carbonyl groups in the amide portion of the condensate's molecule and by different and better-defined bands in the 1,800- to 1,500-cm-1 range. The flotation performance of these amines was evaluated by means of the laboratory-scale flotation of an itabirite ore. The etheramines proved to be the most effective collectors for this system. Monoamines presented better performance than diamines for the ore under investigation.

The influence of mining on the hydro-geo-mechanical environment can be greatly modified by alternating mining geometries. The limiting magnitudes of surface subsidence and groundwater flow over the mining area, as a result of mine geometric changes, can be reasonably predicted through the coupled finite-element model introduced in this paper. The model has been verified using real and conceptual case studies which reveal that changes in strata conductivities are strongly related to the strata deformation induced by mining. The greatest modification of hydraulic conductivities occurs within the caving or severely fractured zones. The study indicates that narrowing the panel face width will substantially reduce both the intensity and extent of mining damage to the overlying strata, limit surface subsidence and constrain the change in hydraulic conductivity to a reduced scale and smaller extent, particularly as mining depth increases.

Bord and pillar mining at shallow depth (400 m approx. maximum) is widely used in South African coal mines. One of the problems encountered in extracting coal in this manner is the ventilation of advancing bord and pillar headings. The traditional ventilation methods of force, exhaust and overlap (force/exhaust) are reasonably effective but tend to be both cost and labour intensive. Ducting often restricts the available free area of roadways thus impeding the transport of coal and other materials inbye the coal production section. Due to the above facts, ductless fans are currently being used to minimize the amount of ducting required in advancing sections. Two different types of fans are used, namely, vortex fans and the so-called `jet' fans. Vortex fans were developed from the fan blade design used for vertical take-off aircraft. The fans have the capability of delivering air over distances of about 30 m in the underground situation without any ducting attached to it. Jet fans are standard axial flow fans fitted with outlet reduction pieces which increase the velocity pressure at the discharge to such an extent that the air delivery distance is improved to almost match that of vortex fans. The paper describes some applications of both these fan types in advancing bord and pillar sections.

The term "pressure tunnel" in the broad sense includes all hollow spaces, aligned along an axis and surrounded by rock, which are suitable for pressurization. In particular, this category includes: • horizontal or slightly inclined water pressure tunnels; • vertical or inclined pressure shafts; • pressure chambers or shafts of surge chambers; and, • compressed air storage tunnels. The main problems in the design and construction of pressure tunnels result less from their length or size than from the requirement for watertightness and, dependent upon this, reliability in operation and economy in construction. Where the lack of sufficient overburden does not permit the rock to accept the internal pressure in the tunnel, or where this pressure is so high that the watertightness is in doubt although the stability of the tunnel shell is not in question, a pressure tunnel must nevertheless be reinforced. Surge chambers, pressure tunnels and tailraces which are subjected to relatively low internal pressure, usually not much in excess of 1.5 MN/m2, are eminently suitable for construction in post-tensioned concrete. Pressure shafts, which as a consequence of the high water head are subject to a considerable maximum service pressure, are usually lined with a steel tube, a considerable proportion of the internal pressure being transmitted to the rock by backing concrete. Theoretical research, laboratory tests and practical experience confirm the possibility to stabilise the excavated tunnel front by suitably composed slurries even in coarse ground with extremely high permeability. The fluid assures dependable repartition of the pressure, low torque of the cutting wheel and small perturbances of the original ground structure. Very easy access to the front, for tool repair or removal of obstacles, are other features of the WF-Hydroshield concept. For soft ground, the Hydrojet (excavation by immersed slurry jets) permits still further improvements. Field experiences in very mixed face conditions are related. Measured soil subsidences in homogeneous, loose sands above Hydroshield-driven tunnels are compared to calculated values. Dependable shield tail seals, which are a necessary condition for work without compressed air in the tunnel, and an original repair kit are presented. The aim to liberate shield driving from hazards of narrowly defined soil conditions and to broaden the range of applications led to a series of bentonite shield machines, derivated from the initial slurry type, such as Dense Mud Shield, Earth Pressure Balance Shield or shields with hard rock cutterheads. Similar to these constructions, overall stability of the front was the major concern in developing the Hydroshield. OUTLINE Beginning in 1946, a careful geological survey was made of the Tsugaru Straits. In 1964, excavation of the exploratory tunnels were started to observe the characteristics of faults and rock formation directly, and to study construction methods of excavation and sealing water inflow. In March 1971, the investigation stages were over, and in April 1971, the construction project was authorized from the government. The geological features in the straits may be divided into three broad classes. One third consists of andesite on Honshu side. The other two thirds consists of tuff. The middle of the straits consists of tuff, so-called Kuromatsunai-layers. On Hokkaido side, it consists of tuff, called as Kunnui-layers. There are nine noteworthy faults on the route. Prior to the excavation of the main tunnel, the horizontal pilot tunnels and service tunnels are made. Exploratory borings are taken to confirm the geological conditions and the presence of gushing water. Groutings for sealing water inflow are carried out when necessary. In geologically bad conditioned sections such as disintegrated or fractured zones, special methods are applied. In geologically good zones, the tunnels are bored through using the same methods as for a mountain tunnel driving. The pilot tunnel being constructed at the sea bottom is under direct control of the Japan Railway Construction Public Corporation. The service tunnel and the main tunnel are being excavated by contractors.

In traditional construction contracting practice, the owner allocated almost all risks to the contractor, saying in effect, "you deal with all construction problems and all third parties, and don't bother me." In this same tradition, the architect or engineer designed a structure in its finished condition, and if he thought about the construction problems that might be involved in building it, he was careful not to express any opinions on these matters in the contract documents. This feudal attitude fostered two results: 1. Contractors added high contingencies to their bids to cover the costs of risks. 2. Litigation of construction contract claims blossomed. Broadly, the owners lost--the courts reallocated many risks the owners thought they had laid on the contractor. Thoughtful owners and engineers recognized that owners were paying for risks twice --once in bid contingencies and a second time in court. Meanwhile, contractors were not getting rich; they were losing money on delays and disputes, and just about getting even (if they were lucky) in court. And construction law was becoming an increasingly lucrative field--for lawyers. Furthermore, with the growing influx of lawyers onto the construction scene, the owner-contractor-engineer relationship became increasingly an adversary one. The emphasis came to be on culpability rather than capability--who could be held responsible for breaching some contract clause, not who might find a solution to some common problem. This game was played with equal vigor by owners and contractors.

The metallurgical performance of column flotation is determined by the concentrate grade and recovery. Although the former can be continuously measured using an on-stream analyzer, the latter must be estimated by a material balance calculation based on seldom verified steady-state assumptions. Consequently, the automatic control and optimization of flotation columns should be performed using secondary variables having a strong influence on the metallurgical performance, such as froth depth, gas hold-up or bubble surface area flux and bias. The aim of this paper is to present a method to get froth depth and bias measurements using virtual sensors. Fractional factorial experiment design for the neural network calibration of the bias sensor, pilot plant results, and eventual industrial applications – including the possibility of achieving effective real-time optimization from bias and froth depth measurements – will also be discussed.

Systematic planning of underground work is increasingly important in this era of advancement of rapid underground excavation techniques. The day when planning consisted of deciding which men would shovel and which would push wheelbarrows - and the answer to any problem was more men - has faded into the past. The modern underground constructor faces economic and competitive conditions which demand exacting planning, logistics and scheduling; the most efficient operating methods and equipment known; and realistic, comprehensive, analytical risk evaluation with adequate contingencies or other protection. Proper planning to cover all these elements - plus one other element: old fashioned "good luck" - will insure a successful underground project. Underground work, because of its inherent characteristics, is among the most risky types of construction. The forecasting of underground conditions is at this time only educated predictions based on sometimes faulty data, insufficient data, or no data at all. The predicted conditions of numerous operations have deviated far from the actual conditions encountered. Opportunities for error exist in profusion seldom present for surface operations. Other than this unusual risk factor, the planning for underground work does not differ greatly from planning for surface work. In planning and starting an operation there is seldom available the information or time to thoroughly analyze all unknowns. It then becomes necessary to develop a plan predicated on assumptions and trade-offs that appear to be safe and economical and to add time and cost contingencies that will provide some degree of protection. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT While Holmes & Narver is better known in other fields, the company has been active in many phases of underground excavation for over twenty years. In the 1950's, H&N participated in design and construction of nearly twenty miles of waste disposal tunnels in Southern California. As Architect-Engineer for the Atomic Energy Commission, we had design and management responsibility for many miles of tunnels and for thousands of feet of exploration and big hole drilling, from coast to coast in the States, and for gas well completions and exploration drilling for the Navy and the National Science Foundation from Pt. Barrow to Byrd Station in Antarctica. In my ten years with the company, we contributed to the development of big hole drilling techniques at a number of sites and analyzed the capability of boring machines for many of the tunnel projects. The Vernal phosphate rock concentrator is located in the Uinta Mountains near Vernal, Utah. Ore is sedimentary rock from the Phosphoria Formation. Truck and shovel mining is done at a rate of 11,500 TPD. Run of mine ore is crushed and then milled through a SAG mill and ball mill to minus 16 mesh. Milled ore is deslimed using cyclones and hydrosizers. Sands are conditioned with fatty acid, petroleum sulfonate, diesel fuel and frother prior to primary rougher and cleaner flotation. Primary flotation tailing is milled to 95% minus 48 mesh, deslimed in cyclones, conditioned using reagents previously described, and then processed through rougher and cleaner scavenger flotation. Product of scavenger cleaner concentrate is upgraded by reverse flotation of dolomite. Flotation concentrates are combined and dewatered, pulp being milled to 99.5% minus 65 mesh and then thickened to 65% solids. Product is pumped from storage through a 10 inch, 94 mile pipeline to a conversion plant at Rock Springs, Wyoming. Mill tailing is stored behind an earthen dam, water from the settled tailing being reclaimed for mill use.

In his keynote address at the 18th International Minerals Processing Conference (IMPC), R.P. King, director of the University of Utah Comminution Center, said "it will be the application of very fundamental physical principles that is likely to bring major advances in comminution technology (IMPC, pp. 39-45)." It is evident from the literature published in 1993 that many of these fundamental studies, particularly as they relate to single-particle fracture mechanics and mineral liberation, are starting to bear fruit. The beginnings of fundamental mathematical models for design, scale-up and control of comminution systems are now taking shape. Modeling/fundamentals Population balance models (PBM) have been used to describe grinding systems for 20 to 30 years. However, Williams and Meloy (IMPC, pp. 73-79) pointed out some of the inherent problems with this modeling approach and that there is no unique solution for the unconstrained PBM for grinding. Many of the current constraints used to back-fit selection and breakage functions were also shown to have problems. The need for a more fundamental means of determining these parameters was indicated.

The study area is located in the Alpine-Himalayan zone in Turkey. Geologically, this is a very complicated region, and the rock units generally are divided into two groups as either allochthonous and autochthonous. Tectono-stratigraphically, the units are Paleozoic quartzite, black limestone, arkosic sandstone, interlaminated radiolarite and Triassic limestone, thick Jurassic limestone, detritic limestone with alternating Eocene Nummulites beds and cream-green marl, Miocene siltstone, and ophiolite. Trachyte, trachyandesite, feldspathoidal trachyandesite porphyry, tuff, and pumice formed by volcanism during the Plio-Quaternary also are present. Recent alluvium and slope detritus locally cover all the other rock units. A number of sulfur outcrops occur in the area. Among them are outcrops at Keciborlu, Yelliyatak Hill, Buyuk, and Kucuk Kukurt Dere. The most important sulfur deposits are found in volcanic tuff and siltstone-marl, and they include highly organic material. Sulfur may accumulate around recent gas diffusions and also as massive formations. The information about local geology and sulfur isotopes shows that the sulfur originated From the crust and probably comes from organic-rich Paleozoic and Triassic units. The sulfur did not move between Triassic and Pliocene time. However. Plio-Quaternary volcanism did cause movement of the sulfur, and this was followed by formation of the secondary sulfur due to post-tectonic thermal activities and the mixing of other surface waters.

The Crosstown 7 Collector System, Contract C28G11, is part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's Waste Pollution Abatement Program. The contract involves the construction of 1.6 km (1 mile) of 3 m (10 ft.) diameter tunnel in soft ground. The tunnel is 10 m (35 Ft.) below surface and passes through a variety of soils. The eastern leg of the tunnel along Bruce Street is mainly in till material, a stiff, relatively dry clay. The northern leg along 16th Street starts in till, and continues in estuarine deposits - moist sticky clay, with intrusions of alluvial sand and gravel. The contract specifications required that the tunnel be constructed either under compressed air or with an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. The S. A. Healy Co., the general contractor, chose the latter option. Additionally, a single pass, pre-cast concrete segmental liner was selected as the lining system. The mining machine was manufactured by Lovat Tunnel of Canada and the segments were made by the Sehulster Company of Milwaukee. The use of this combination of machine and lining is relatively new to the United States and this tunnel is the most extensive built to date with a gasketed, segmental single pass lining for transportation of fluids. This paper details the various aspects of the construction of the tunnel and associated shafts.

The 199O Clean Air Act Amendments specify national objectives for reducing sulfur dioxide emissions from coal fired power plants. System-wide reductions can be achieved by combining various emissions control technologies and allowances, or compliance credits, that can be purchased, sold or traded. As part of the Coal Quality Expert development project funded by the US Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Black & Veatch has developed an interactive computer tool, the Acid Rain Advisor (ARA). Through this program, integrated, system-wide compliance plans are generated by comparing the costs and emissions reduction benefits of emissions allowances and various SO2-control technologies (coal cleaning, fuel switching, scrubber retrofits, etc.)

The influence of passageway fires on ventilation flows was investigated in three horizontal fire tunnel s: 1. a laboratory-scale fire tunnel network, 2. a small-scale fire-plume tunnel, and 3. a large- scale simulated mine gallery. Wood was used in the first and third tunnel and gas-burners were used in the second one to generate passageway fires. Experimental measurements included gas mass flow rate, velocity, temperature and pressure in the passageways and exhaust fans. The overall and local effects of the fires were investigated by comparing these measurements obtained before and during the fires. Results show that a passageway fire essentially increases the flow resistances of the passageways of a tunnel flow network by virtue of volatile fuel mass injection and high combustion temperatures. The ventilation air flow rate is consequently throttled to lower values than that before the fire. At severe throttling, reverse flow occurs. Conditions for reverse flow are characterized by two Froude numbers based on gas velocity and density upstream of the fire, and height of the passageway. The Froude numbers and the characteristics of the passageway fire are necessary to analyze mine ventilation/fire interaction and to predict mine ventilation patterns during fires.
