Recent advances in virtual reality (VR) have resulted in major opportunities for improving the safety training of mine workers, supervisors and managers. VR has the potential to expose mine personnel to hazardous situations in a safe, highly visual and interactive manner. Customized simulations of mine layouts, dynamic operations and mine environment can be set up, and mine personnel can be allowed to move around the virtual mine, making decisions at key points. The consequences of both correct and incorrect decisions can be immediately fed back to the trainee.

Introduction Mineral recovery from an in situ leaching operation is determined by the often complex interaction of hydrology, mass transport, and chemical kinetics. The operating conditions of many pilot and production scale uranium leaching operations involve heterogeneities in aquifer permeability. Differences in permeability may be naturally occurring, the result of differences in main size or cementation, or they may be induced by leaching activity. Variations in permeability directly affect the fluid flow streamline pattern, fluid flux, and so also leaching geochemistry and uranium recovery. An in situ leaching hydrology model (ISL) and a mass transport-oxidation rate model (ISLGC) have been developed for use in making site specific predictions of the leachability and productive potential of heterogeneous ore deposits, and for the optimal design of leachant injection and recovery operations. The two models are linked by output and input requirements. The ISL hydrology model generates a leachant flow streamline pattern between injection and recovery points in a flow domain incorporating regions of arbitrary permeability. The ISLGC transport model describes the changing solution concentrations of uranium and oxygen and the changing mineral concentrations of uranium and pyrite resulting from convection, longitudinal dispersion, and oxidation reactions. Batu Hijau is a new copper and gold mine located on the island of Sumbawa in the Republic of Indonesia. This paper details the design and construction of the Batu Hijau overland conveyor, one of the most challenging efforts of the project. The 1.8 m wide, 5.6 km long conveyor has a design capacity of over 10,000 mtph and carries primary crushed ore through the steep mountains of Sumbawa, which necessitated a 160 m vertical downhill section, a 75 m vertical uphill section, ten vertical curves and one horizontal curve.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the dust control effectiveness of two-phase flow systems in a full-scale model mine using a mockup of a Joy 14CM continuous mining machine. In a two-phase flow system, air and water flow simultaneously through the nozzle. Air pressure varies from 10 to 60 psi, and water at 30 to 50 psi. Coal dust was introduced at the face, and dust concentrations were monitored at the operator locations and in the return. When compared with a conventional spray system, a symmetrical two-phase flow system reduced dust levels during the box cut by 43 pct at the operator location, and 30 pct in the face return. Dust levels, however, increased at the off-operator position during the slab cut. A directional two-phase flow system reduced dust levels at both operator locations by more than 90 pct in the box cut mode. While the use of two-phase flow systems will reduce respirable dust levels and water usage, it requires an air supply to the miner. Moreover, the ability of the two-phase flow system to redirect the dust cloud makes nozzle orientation a critical factor.

1. INTRODUCTION The Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) is a computer based model whose objective is to quantify the risks of hard rock tunneling in terms of cost and time to completion. The main feature of the TCM is the simulation of the tunnel construction. The simulation makes it possible to incorporate in the time and cost computations the effect of uncertainties in geologic conditions and in productivity rates and costs. The cost and time computed with the TCM will be in form of distributions that allow a quantitative risk assessment. The TCM will be useful as an estimating tool permitting the estimator to rigorously relate uncertainties of individual factors to the end result. The TCM will also make it possible to evaluate technological innovations and to identify problem areas in existing technologies. The TCM consists of three interacting submodels: the geologic submodel, the construction operations submodel and the tunnel simulator. The goal of this paper is to describe the geologic submodel, whereas the construction operations submodel and the tunnel simulator will be described in the following paper by Moavenzadeh et al. First it will be shown how interactions between the geologic submodel and other parts of the TCM will impose certain requirements on the geologic submodel. These requirements, which relate primarily to the description of geologic conditions by a set of problem-oriented parameters and the quantification of uncertainty associated with geologic conditions, will then be discussed. INTRODUCTION The measurement of displacements in soil or rock in the vicinity of underground openings provide valuable information for a better understanding of the behaviour of the structure. On the basis of systematic observations conclusions can be drawn concerning - safety of the opening in the various stages of excavation - effectiveness of the support measures - nature of the rock pressure to be expected - influence of the construction of the opening on neighbouring structures (settlements of foundations, underpassing other tunnels etc.) - comparison of theoretical predictions with the actual structural behaviour (1). Today there are several types of suitable instruments available that can be employed at reasonable costs for such investigations (2). The most important ones are the multiple point borehole extensometer, the inclinometer and the multiple point borehole deflectometer. As is well-known, the extensometer only measures the displacement component in the borehole axis, while the inclinometer and the deflectometer provide monitoring of rock mass movements normal to the borehole axis. In the following a new instrument is described, which has been given the name Extenso-Deflectometer ISETH. In this single piece of equipment certain features of the above-mentioned three types of borehole instruments are incorporated. it enables the measurement of all three components of the displacement vector at consecutive points along the borehole, the axis of which may have any direction in space. The storage of energy in one form or another is a well established practice, demonstrated by the familiar sight of large oil storage steel tanks. Today, however, the problems of energy storage are taking on a new complexion. Increased emphasis on large and sometimes untried forms of energy storage is being generated by: (1) The uncertainties we face concerning future oil and gas supplies. (2) The growing need for the storage of peak-shaving energy on large utility systems. (3) The growing volume of highly toxic and energy generating wastes resulting from nuclear power plants. Concurrent with the growth of these pressures, legitimate environmental concerns now demand that the methods of storage which are utilized meet adequate criteria of safety and preservation of surface land, as well as fulfilling technical and economic functions. From these elements, increasing awareness has grown of the potential role that can be played by underground space in providing a storage medium for energy related materials. The vessels which must be built for underground energy storage will be built by the tunnel engineer, and the design requirements of such vessels will go far beyond the classical tunneling requirement to drive a stable, reasonably dry tunnel between two points. Depending on the nature of the material to be stored, the manner in which the storage is to be operated, and the specific risks to the environment which are involved, rock chambers must be designed as special purpose storage vessels. The tunnel engineer may be required to demonstrate that unusual pressure and temperature conditions can be sustained by the rock, or that containment of a toxic material can be assured. INTRODUCTION The Newtown Creek Pollution Control Project (P.W. 53) is a major system of facilities designed to collect wastewater from large areas of the Boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, then channel it to a treatment plant where the wastewater is processed and discharged. The North Branch interceptor collects wastewater along the east side of Manhattan and transports it downstream to a Junction Chamber at Avenue "D" near East 13th Street. The South Branch interceptor similarly collects wastewater from the southern part of Manhattan Island on both east and west sides of Manhattan and transports it to the same Junction Chamber from where both flows are delivered to the adjacent Manhattan Pumping Station which pumps the wastewater under the East River to a treatment plant in Brooklyn. This system is shown in Figure 1. Construction of the Manhattan Pumping Station began in the Summer of 1966 and was delayed by a number of mishaps. In the vicinity of the North and South Interceptors, approximately 3,060 cubic meters (4,000 cubic yards) of soil flowed into the excavation: 765 cubic meters (1,000 cubic yards) at the North Branch Interceptor, and approximately 2,300 cubic meters (3,000 cubic yards) at the South Interceptor. These movements were accompanied by surface subsidence, collapse, or both. On June 4, 1973, while pumping station construction was underway, approximately five to seven cubic yards of sand entered the junction chamber through a temporary bulkhead valve in the North Branch Interceptor.

The Alcan Smelter project at Lynemouth on the Northumbrian coast draws cooling water for the power station through shafts and tunnels from the North Sea. The sea at this part of the coast is frequently very rough and even in calm weather the coastal currents are strong. The adjacent coal mine makes use of these currents to disperse colliery waste and discharges into the sea some thirty thousand tons each week. In consequence the sea bed is continuously shifting and the sea is black and turbid. Construction of sea shafts under these conditions presents difficulties as drilling from a floating vessel is hazardous and sea bed activity of divers is greatly hindered by the entire absence of visibility. After considering several alternatives a method of construction was agreed with the Consultants in which the drilling and also the lining of the shaft would be completed in sequence from an eight legged work barge (GEM 126). Each shaft would be drilled to full depth and a steel cylinder, with its ends closed temporarily, would be lowered into the hole and grouted into the formation to form a full-length permanent lining. The bell mouth for each shaft would be constructed in advance to form part of the cylindrical casing. On interception of the shaft by its appropriate tunnel the lower end of the cylindrical casing would be cut away and the internal walling of the shaft installed from below. After completion of construction the shafts and tunnels would be flooded and the bell mouth sealing covers removed by divers.

This paper presents results from pilot-scale and field testing of an innovative technology that uses sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) to treat and control acid mine drainage (AMD). Sulfate-reducing bacteria, a common group of anaerobic bacteria, produce hydrogen sulfide and bicarbonate when supplied with sources of carbon and sulfate. Hydrogen sulfide reacts with metal ions in AMD, precipitating them as metal sulfides. The bicarbonate produced serves to help neutralize the drainage. Pilot-scale metal-removal efficiencies reached 99% for zinc, 99% for aluminum, 96% for manganese, 98% for cadmium and 96% for copper. However, the iron and arsenic removals were not as effective as the aforementioned metals. This was largely attributed to high levels of iron and arsenic that contaminating the organic substrate. There was evidence that both adsorption and sulfate reduction were occurring within the reactors. The SRB field demonstration involved using the flooded subsurface mine workings of the Lilly/Orphan Boy Mine near Elliston, MT, as an "in situ biological reactor." In the mine, high removal efficiencies were observed for aluminum, cadmium, copper and zinc (70% to near 100%) during the four years of monitoring. However, for reasons similar to the pilot scale testing, low removal efficiencies were observed for arsenic and iron. Sulfate reduction was evident by measured decreases in sulfate and the detection of soluble sulfide within the mine water.

INTRODUCTION The need for Government-sponsored research and development to increase excavation rates and lower costs for tunneling and mining operations in a variety of rock types has been emphasized in a wide range of publications from advisory panels, symposiums on rapid excavation, and individuals. In response to the predicted demands for mining and construction-oriented underground excavations for the next two decades (1970-1989), a comprehensive 10-year, $200-million research program in rapid excavation was proposed by the National Academy of Sciences in 1968 (1). Although the large program recommended by the Academy has not been funded, substantial Government-sponsored research in rapid excavation has been conducted during the past several years. This paper reviews some of the significant research accomplishments obtained under a three-year, $6.6-million research program in rock mechanics and rapid excavation sponsored by the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and managed by the Bureau of Mines. In addition to the rock mechanics research, five major phases of excavation; systems analysis, geologic prediction, rock disintegration, ground support, and materials handling were represented by the projects funded under the ARPA program. In 1991, most industrialized countries, except for Germany, were in a recession or a period of reduced growth. The US economy, already in recession, suffered from mounting banking system losses and the uncertainty brought about by the Persian Gulf War. However, US and worldwide minerals exploration did not collapse as it did during the mid-1980s. Even though gold and base metal prices declined, prices were still above cash costs for most operations. This allowed the continuation of established exploration programs but sharply limited new initiatives. Exploration 1990-1991 Planned worldwide 1991 exploration expenditures declined by about 8% from 1990 levels, according to a survey of 153 companies by the Metals Economic Group (MEG). Canada was the leading exploration target with 23% of the total, followed by Australia and the US (19% each), South Africa (13%), Latin America (11%) and the South Pacific (7%). The remaining 8% was split evenly between Europe and the rest of Africa. In Latin America, Mexico and Chile are the most attractive countries for exploration. Recognizing the risks involved, the industry has been cautious about ventures in the former Soviet Union. Survey results also showed that while the majors expected to maintain exploration spending, smaller firms were cutting back or actively seeking farm-outs from the majors (personal communication, M. Wegener, MEG).

"The Montreal Metro Blue Line Extension Project is part of a metropolitan Program that was launched in 2009 by the Transportation Ministry of Quebec to add additional extensions to existing metro lines in the cities of Montreal, Longueil and Laval with the intention to meet current demand and future growth within the Montreal agglomeration. Specifically the Blue Line Extension Project will add five underground stations to the East of the Montreal. The paper addresses the preparation and the implementation of a three-step geotechnical and geo-environmental investigation program and preliminary design considerations such as the selection of a preferred horizontal and vertical alignment, the selection of construction methods based on previous local experience and current industry trends, as well as preliminary sizing of underground infrastructures. PROJECT BACKGROUND An agreement between the three mayors of the Montreal Metropolitan City agglomeration, namely, Montreal, Longueil and Laval prompted the Government of the Province of Quebec to create a project office to oversee the studies of extending the existing metro network. The last extension of the existing metro network was completed in 2008 with the Laval extension, which consisted of adding three stations from the existing Orange line. The current extension Program consists of three different extensions, namely extending the Orange Line to Laval and finishing the loop, extending the Blue Line to the East of Montreal by adding five stations, and adding five stations on the Southshore of the St-Lawrence River for the Yellow Line extension. The extension program also requires the construction of an underground storage and maintenance garage located to the north-west of the existing Cote-Vertu station on the Orange line. Figure 1 shows the overall extension program with the existing network."

The La Fontaine Tunnel in Montreal, Quebec is currently undergoing major structural rehabilitation work and systems upgrade work to comply with current codes, standards and best practices in fire life safety and to extend its lifespan of this 55-year-old immersed tube tunnel for at least another 40 years. The paper discusses design consideration of ongoing works that include structural analyses to evaluate repair strategies for the post-tensioned reinforced caissons, the scheme to repair two leaky joints between caissons, the design of passive fire protection that involved in situ and real scale laboratory tests, and other tunnel systems upgrades.

This paper presents a nonlinear integer goal programming model that optimizes a mineral production schedule while considering the penalties and bonuses based on quality variations in the final product. It involves five coal quality goals plus a profit objective in its formulation and uses the weighting method of goal programming for a solution. The goals to be sought involve the sulfur, ash, heat content, moisture content, and ash softening temperature of the blended coal product. The model is linear in its handling of most of these goals but uses a piecewise linear integer formulation for the sulfur and heat content bonus and penalty schedule. The model is applicable to any mineral product blended from several different sources and subject to a varying price dependent on blended product quality or qualities. However, it seems to be most pertinent to optimizing production schedules for coal deliveries to power plants. Accordingly, the model is applied to a hypothetical coal production problem where multiple coal mines are operated to supply a final blended product to a power plant. In this example, the price paid for the coal is assumed to be a function of five of the most important coal qualities. The problem is solved as a direct function of the coal supply contract, thus removing the necessity of determining the weighting coefficients on a subjective basis.

Cyprus Sierrita Corp. has developed a training program that has led to several significant improvements in safety performance and productivity. Truck productivity has increased 6% as measured by truck cycle times. Increased skill levels and awareness on the part of the mine's operators are due to the new training effort. Costs associated with productivity training have been about $185,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1.9 million in savings attributable to the increased skill levels of technicians due to the training effort. Cyprus Sierrita is a subsidiary of Cyprus Amax of Englewood, CO. The company operates a copper and molybdenum mining and processing facility south of Tucson, AZ, near the town of Green Valley. The Cyprus Sierrita operation produces about 109 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of copper, 11.3 kt/a (25 million lbs/year) of molybdenum, 31.1 t/a (1 million oz/year) of silver and 1.8 t/a (4,000 lbs/year) of rhenium. The opera¬tion employs 770 people at the site. About 200 of these employees work in the mine operations. Mining at Sierrita uses standard open-pit techniques. Crews of 43 people rotate on 12-hour shifts. Hourly technicians are nonunion and do not use rigid job classifications to define pay. Rather, the system is designed to pay employees for what they are able to do. Administering this effort requires that training opportunities are provided to those people who desire them. Successful training opportunities al¬low people to gain skills. The more skills an employee can demonstrate, the higher his or her "tech level." The world-famous beryllium deposits at Spor Mountain, northwest of Delta, Utah, are the principal resource of beryllium in the United States. Beryllium metal, beryllium-metal alloys, and beryllium oxide ceramics have a long history of specialty applications. Beryllium is used in X-ray windows, nuclear reactors: and a wide variety of industrial and electronic products. The Spor Mountain deposits are located on the western rim of the Thomas caldera, one of at least three volcanic depressions that subsided during voluminous eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuff in early Oligocene time. Beginning in early Miocene time, the caldera rim and its volcanic fill were cut extensively by basin-and-range faults. Basin-and-range faulting was accompanied by local eruption of high-silica rhyolite. High-silica topaz rhyolites at Spor Mountain (21 Ma) and Topaz Mountain (6 to 7 Ma) are especially rich in fluorine and lithophile trace elements such as beryllium. Topaz rhyolite of the Miocene Spor Mountain Formation, or its magma was the source of the Spor Mountain beryllium deposits. At Spor Mountain, deposits of beryllium, as submicroscopic bertrandite, Be4Si207(OH)2, occur in rhyolite tuff beneath flows and domes of topaz rhyolite. The beryllium deposits also contain minor disseminated fluorite, lithium, uranium, and anomalous traces of other lithophile elements. The host tuff, originally composed of glass, zeolite, and abundant clasts of carbonate rock, has been altered to clay and potassium feldspar. Fluorite, quartz, and opal replaced carbonate clasts in the tuff. Beryllium was deposited with fluorite in altered clasts and in the matrix of altered tuff. Fluorspar and uranium deposits are spatially and genetically associated with the beryllium deposits at Spor Mountain. Fluorspar deposits at Spor Mountain occur mostly in breccia pipes. Some fluorspar pipes contain uranium, thought to be dispersed in the structure of fluorite. Secondary uranium minerals are dispersed throughout the tuff that hosts beryllium deposits and comprise lenses of ore-grade uranium at the Yellow Chief mine.

Clay minerals can be a source of problems in heap leaching operations. The ore for many heap leach operations is commonly acid-sulfate alteration zone rocks which may be found in hot springs deposits as well as the supergene zone of other near- surface gold deposits. Clays can be important constituents of these ores. Swelling clays, such as smectite, can come loose from the agglomerated ore, migrate within the heap, concentrate in pore spaces and often plug up flow channels in the heap Cement is often added to the ore as a binder during the agglomeration process. Lime is added for pH control. Their presence, combined with the sodium cyanide commonly used to leach, can raise the pH of the leach solution to 10 or even 12. This very alkaline solution can cause dissolution of some mineral Some clays, such as kaolinite, are not very stable in high pH solutions. They can be dissolved and reprecipitated as other clay species if sufficient silica and the appropriate cations are available in solution. Silica gels and amorphous materials can also be created from the dissolved kaolinite and other minerals and act as retardants to the flow of leach solutions in the heap. Therefore, before a heap leach operation is built, the operator should evaluate the clays in the ore and test the agglomeration procedure. It is important to know not only the mineralogy and the chemistry of the leach environment but how the minerals and solutions interact and what the products of this interaction are. A hypothesis is presented in this paper that expanding smectite- bearing clays can be generated within the heap. How and why this happens will be explained.

In attempting to assess the contributions of Antoine Gaudin to the profession which he illuminated for almost a half-century, we will need to examine a very broad canvas. He was active in three significant areas: as a teacher; in research, both through his own endeavors and those of his students; and as a consultant to the mining industry and to the Government. Beyond these specific contributions, there was the major personal influence he had on scores of students, friends, and colleagues in the profession. If a single measure of the man's contribution is to be found, it will be the extent and direction in which he influenced the practice of his profession. To find this we should examine the state of miner- al processing when he began his activities in the 1920's, the progress which has taken place over the past half-century, and the part his activities played in this advance. However, there is a provocative and broader examination which I have chosen to make instead. This is to examine the past century in mineral processing through the lives of three men who, by common agreement, stand on the heights, both in teaching and in their contributions to industry: Robert H. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart, and the man whose memory we honor this evening, Antoine M. Gaudin. Their careers, by coincidence, cover just a century. This is also AIME's first century, and the first century of mineral industry education in the United States. In fact, mineral processing itself on any significant scale in the country encompasses only a century and a quarter. BEGINNINGS OF PRACTICE IN THE U.S. Before the 1840qs, U.S. mining, except for coal and iron ore, was on a small scale and was confined to the eastern states, with processing practically nonexistent. The 1840's saw the beginning of Michigan native copper production, including ore dressing; the 18501s, iron ore production in Minnesota; and the 18601s, lead production and processing in Missouri. But the most explosive event was the California gold rush after 1848, which not only brought tens-of-thousands of fortune hunters to the West, but also catalyzed broad mining activities and processing within the following decades. Production In 1993, it was estimated that United States mine production of barite increased 24%. Barite consumption, either sold or used by grinding plants, increased by 39% and imports increased 4%, according to the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 80% of the total, followed by Georgia. It is estimated that 83% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 17% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Prices The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 1%, according to the USBM. The declared value c.i.f. US port of all imported crude barite during 1993 decreased from $40.09/t ($36.37/st) in 1992 to $37.72/t ($34.22/st). Uses Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals, fillers in paper, plastics, brake shoes and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market increased due to the higher average rig count during 1993. The average number of rotary rigs operating in the United States was 754, 5% greater than the 1992 average of 717. Imports Crude barite imports in 1993 were 443 kt (488,000 st) greater than 1992, representing an increase of 137%. Imports accounted for 67% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States.
