INTRODUCTION Controlled ground freezing for mining and construction applications has been in use for over a century. Despite the great technological evolution which has occurred during this period, ground freezing is still used on projects today with much the same basic technology as that used originally over 100 years ago. Major developments have occurred in the separate fields of frozen soil mechanics, refrigeration, and heat transfer analysis. However, except for a few projects in Europe and Asia, these developments have not been combined to upgrade ground freezing techniques to their potential level. In view of this situation, it is believed desirable to examine the art of ground freezing in light of recent technical developments, together with highlights on some of the apparent advantages, disadvantages and economics of the various alternative approaches. The purpose of this paper is to attempt such an examination, with particular emphasis on the practical application of presently available technology. GENERAL ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES Ground freezing may be used in any soil or rock formation, regardless of structure, grain size or permeability; however, it is best suited to soft ground rather than rock conditions. Freezing may be used for any size, shape or depth of excavation and the same physical plant can be used from job to job despite wide variation in these factors.

Marble is a preferred surfacing material in up-scale buildings. Its use increased in the 1870's with rising national wealth and declined in the 1950's when synthetic materials for these applications were developed. Natural marble is now limited to high-end domestic and commercial structures. Cultured marble is a paste of white marble dust and polyester resin cured in molds yielding fixtures of specific finished dimensions. Dyes incorporated at different stages in the mixing cycle mimic shades and veining of natural marble. This paper discusses the filler requirements for cultured marble production and reviews new techniques to cut and finish natural marble.

INTRODUCTION The Milwaukee, Wisconsin Metropolitan Area provides an ideal opportunity to review the advancement of the art and science of mixed face tunneling in the past 65 years. Although there were earlier tunnel projects in the Milwaukee area, by other agencies, the majority of those driven in the Twentieth Century have been done under contract with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District through the agency of the Sewerage Commission of the City of Milwaukee and the Metropolitan Sewerage Commission of the County of Milwaukee. Legal Description of District The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District was created by the Wisconsin Legislature in 1921 together with the Metropolitan Sewerage Commission of the County of Milwaukee. This concept of subregional wastewater control was an outgrowth of an investigation and report from a commission appointed by the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee in 1909 to study final sewage disposal for the City. In 1911 that Commission, comprised of J. W. Alvord, George C. Whipple and Harrison P. Eddy, recommended that the City construct a water filtration plant, construct a Menomonee River flushing works, expand the intercepting sewer system and, after a thorough study of the then existing and developing methods of sewage treatment, construct a sewage treatment plant. In response to those recommendations, the Wisconsin Legislature, in Chapter 608 of the Laws of 1913, created the Sewerage Commission of the City of Milwaukee. Recognizing that the improvement of surface water quality would require action on a watershed basis, the Legislature, in Chapters 554 and 590. of the Laws of 1921, created the

Labor costs, which have rapidly increased in the industrial countries for several years, have forced the mining industry to develop new methods and cost saving systems. Also, because mining is basic to meeting the increasing requirements for raw materials, the mining industry is guaranteed a key position in cost cutting efforts. Although this report aims to describe major recent developments in the Federal Republic of Germany, it is restricted to a limited number of them in view of the wide variety of current innovations. The most important mining activities in West Germany are concentrated in the coal mines on the Rhine, Ruhr and Saar, in the lignite open-cast mines west of Cologne and in the potash and salt mining region in Lower Saxony and Hesse. This report will only discuss developments in the underground coal mines and the potash and salt mines, and focuses on projects of Salzgitter Maschinen and Anlagen AG (SMAG). HYDRAULIC DRILLS Drilling strata of varying strength One special difficulty faced in European coal mines is the varying of compressive strength of strata that occurs even over a few meters. The strata associated with the coal measures ranges from hard and tough sandstone or conglomerate to very soft carboniferous shale. It is often difficult to use continuous miners or roadheaders so that drifting by blasting still predominates. But the varying compressive strengths of the strata makes it difficult to choose the best method to drill the rock. For example, it is best to penetrate hard sandstone or conglomerate with heavy percussion drills. The soft carboniferous shale on the other hand, should be penetrated by high speed rotary drilling to obtain optimum performance.

Two modes of collector addition techniques are applied in the column flotation for cleaning ultra fine coal. The collector can be: 1) added directly into the coal slurry through the feed system; and 2) gasified collector and transported in the gas phase through the bubbles. Operating parameters of the column flotation were investigated through three phases of work plans for Pittsburgh No.8 seam coal. In present study, the column flotation using two modes of collector addition techniques were tested and compared. Ninety percent or higher combustible recovery can be achieved by using both methods. However, utilizing the gasified collector addition technique in column flotation has more potential than direct liquid addition technique to obtain the higher recovery at same collector dosage.

INTRODUCTION High in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, some 50 airline miles (80 km) northeast of Fresno, and near the John Muir Wilderness and Kings Canyon National Park, a large underground hydroelectric project is under construction. Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) Company's 1,125 MW Helms Pumped Storage Project exhibits a number of impressive statistics, unusual features, and other characteristics of interest to the tunneling or power plant designer and construction contractor. The most significant underground facilities include almost 20,000 ft (6,096 m) of 27-ft (8.2 m) diam concrete-lined pressure tunnel; 3,700 ft (1,128 m) of access tunnel; 1,600 ft (488 m) of steel-lined high-pressure conduit, 2 major underground chambers more than 1,000 ft (305 m) below ground; 3 deep vertical shafts, and one steep inclined shaft. Maximum static pressures within the conduits range from 200 ft (61 m) to 1,744 ft (532 m), with hydraulic transients that increase pressure to 2,500 ft (762 m). The purpose of these underground works is to provide 475,000 hp (354,350 KW) of water power to each of the 3 reversible pump-turbines, each connected to a 375 MW generator motor. The units, rated at 1,744 ft (532 m) maximum static head, are among the world's front-runners, considering the size-head combination. The Helms Project develops the existing power drop between two of PG&E's reservoirs, Courtright Lake and Lake Wishon. These reservoirs are retained by two concrete-faced rockfill dams completed in 1958, each storing approximately 125,000 acre ft (154 x 106 m3) of water. INTRODUCTION Thermally induced fracture of rock is one of the oldest rock breakage techniques known to man. Primitive underground miners used fires to heat and crack rocks as early as the third century B.C. (Ref. 1). History aside, however, present-day tunneling and mining interests are reconsidering the use of modern heating units for rock fracture for some very good reasons. One of the most important advantages of many heating techniques is the lack of direct contact between the heating device and the rock. This means a lower wear rate relative to mechanical cutters, and no large reactant force to be supplied by the tunneling machine. In addition to avoiding physical contact, some heating systems (e.g., electron-beam guns and lasers) can deliver energy to a rock face much more intensely than can be conveniently handled mechanically. Thus, heating power densities of the order of lob to 107 watts/in.2 and greater can be achieved with high-power lasers. These high power levels allow much higher instantaneous penetration rates than can be achieved by mechanical cutting. Another advantage that accrues to some thermal techniques, such as, for example, surface spalling, is that the thermal fracture process works particularly well in certain rock types (e.g., granite) that are particularly hard to cut mechanically. The complexity of surface mining operations is increasing as attention is directed towards mining larger tracts of lower grade, higher cost deposits. Large tonnage requirements from these mines necessitate utilization of many large pieces of equipment. This equipment must be utilized efficiently, with production maintained at or near designed capacities. Basically, the problem is to select, size, and schedule equipment to maximize profits and minimize adverse environmental impacts (Anon., 1977). The time, manpower, and cost limitations required to analyze a wide variety of situations and alternatives in planning surface mines have been sidestepped with the application of simulation methods using a digital computer. Since a simulator can be programmed to represent the situations which are to be analyzed, many alternatives can be evaluated in a relatively short time. Input variables are easily changed and the resulting changes which take place in the system can be analyzed. When standard methods of analyses are applied, weeks and many man-hours are involved in analyzing large-scale mining operations. At the same time many simplifying assumptions must be made since these operations are dynamic and transient. Hence, it becomes difficult to make sound engineering decisions and take proper and timely corrective action in the absence of simulation methods. This chapter is concerned with the application of one such method, namely, the open-pit materials handling simulator (OPMHS) developed by the Mining Engineering Section, The Pennsylvania State University (Manula, Albert, and Ramani, 1977).

6.1 INTRODUCTION The three most critical factors in successful heap leaching operations are: • The methods employed to pretreat ore (i.e, crushing and agglomeration); • Placement of ore on the leach pad (heap building techniques); and • Wetting of the ore with cyanide (solution application techniques). Improper execution of any of these initial steps may result in a substantial sacrifice of total metal extraction or, in the worst case, in project failure. Ore preparation in terms of crushing and agglomeration was discussed in Chapter 5; this chapter therefore focuses on commonly employed techniques for heap construction and solution application. The main objective of heap construction is to obtain the most homogeneous heap possible. "Channeling" of leachate in heaps with preferential seepage paths leads to preferential leachate distribution and uneven/incomplete extraction. The two main contributing causes of channeling are inadequate attention to heap construction and uneven solution application. These pitfall s can best be avoided through a knowledge of the various techniques available and the applicability and success of these techniques with various ore types and site conditions. The remainder of this chapter provides a discussion on these two subjects. 6.2 HEAP BUILDING TECHNIQUES Successful heap building techniques vary with the type of ore and, since no two orebodies are exactly alike, some slight modifications are usually necessary for each specific project. However, it is possible to generalize in terms of the appropriate techniques to be used with ores having similar characteristics. This section discusses the three most commonly used methods of heap construction and provides some guidelines with regard to ore types, construction constraints, and lift height parameters for each of the three. 6.2.1 Run-of-Mine Dumping and Dozing The run-of-mine method of heap building can only be used with ore of a highly silicious nature (i.e., ore which will not generate a large amount of

INTRODUCTION For many years, in Europe and in North America, pre-formed metallic and concrete segmental linings in tunnels have been used extensively as temporary and permanent ground support systems. In the United Kingdom the use of cast iron as a means of ground support in mining shafts dates from the first decade of the 19th century. Although at that time wood tubbing was extensively employed, cast iron was used in shafts at Wallsend and Percy Main collieries in the North East of England. The original form of cast iron tubbing consisted of cylinders which were lowered bodily into the pit and were built from the bottom up, but subsequently they were subdivided into segments which involved the making of vertical as well as horizontal joints. Principally, the practice of providing immediate pre-formed support developed because of the incompetent state of the surrounding ground and, although this still remains the over-riding consideration nowadays, several other factors are examined before finally deciding what type of lining to use. Other branches of sub-terranean technology such as tunnel thrusting or immersed tubes (both of which involve pre-formed linings) can provide alternative solutions to problems hitherto thought better solved by bored tunnelling methods. However, this paper will confine itself to those linings developed for the more traditional tunnelling methods. Usually the shape of segmentally lined tunnels is circular because this profile is the most suitable for bad ground and many tunnelling machines. INTRODUCTION Early rock-bolting practice usually consisted of ran¬domly installing bolts, using hand-held drilling equip¬ment such as air-leg mounted sinkers or stopers. As bolting technology evolved, the practice of installing uniform bolt patterns was developed, utilizing random bolt installation as required within the uniform pattern. The uniform rock-bolting technique, when used as the principal method of rock support, requires drills and jumbos designed specifically for rock bolting. This equipment is similar to conventional face drilling machines, except that the jumbos can orient the drills to obtain any necessary bolting angle; often, this means bolts may be installed at or near perpendicular to the centerline of the drift or stope opening. Fig. I shows a typical rubber-tired rock-bolting jumbo of the type commonly used in drifts and room-and-pillar mining. Modern rock-bolting jumbos are capable of drilling the required holes, inserting rockbolts, and torquing them to proper levels. Jumbos also are available for use with resin-anchored bolts. Probably the most unusual of this type utilizes a rotating bolt turret that carries the rock drill, resin charging unit, and the bolt in a single mechanism. Once the turret is loaded with the resin and bolt, further manual effort is not re¬quired. Drilling and bolt placement are accomplished by the operator from a station remote from the bolt site. Fig. 2 shows this turret device. Roof-bolting jumbos are available mounted on rail, crawler, or rubber-tired chassis. Various types of rock drills are used. Depending upon the type of rock, these may include rotary, percussion, or rotary-percussion drills. Fig. 3 shows a typical rail-mounted jumbo. Splicing methods have undergone considerable developments over the last 2Oyears. Continuous conveyor belt service is dependent entirely on the strength and life of the splice to hold the two ends together. Ultimately, belting performance is dependent on the quality, efficiency, and technique of the splicer. As customers demand better belting performance and running tensions increase, the need for splices that perform as efficiently as the belting has increased also. Higher dynamic belt constructions have also dictated the need for "new"sp1icing techniques. Regardless of the belt type used or spliced, one item that is most necessary with all belt types is the quality of the workmanship and standardized splicing methods that employ all of the necessary elements required to ensure reliable field service. This paper will explore the use of Goodyear-issued internal standards for field splicing following the constraints of quality and efficiency for fabric and steel cord reinforced belting. Also included are the 10 most common mistakes made by splicers, Goodyear-issued Field Quality Assurance Standards, and check lists for end users to adhere to the manufacturers' requirements for splicing including materials and specifications for conveyor belt splicing and repairs.

In the last decade or so, the importance of effective preventive maintenance controls and practices has taken on a new and accelerated emphasis. Advances in technology and changes in equipment and product designs impose more precise and demanding standards of quality, productivity and customer service at a very rapid pace. Daily, it is becoming more apparent that in order to fulfill current requirements, existing manufacturing practices and associated control programs must also be upgraded and expanded. This is particularly true in the field of maintenance services. As production and quality standards become more demanding, effective equipment maintenance takes on more importance and becomes more difficult to sustain. In modern plants, the failure of a single equipment component can shutdown a complete production line causing interruptions to operating and shipping schedules that result in costly downtime, dissatisfied customers, and reduced profits. Introduction Recognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries. Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs. To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made through- out the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous re- search studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984). The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. In a proposed rulemaking regulating asbestos, nonasbestos varieties of Tremolite, Anthophyllite and Actinolite would be excluded from the regulations controlling permissible exposure to asbestos fibers. This proposed rulemaking is perceived as improving the scientific basis of the regulation of asbestos because it recognizes that there are no scientific data, either mineralogical or health related, which support the regulation of nonasbestos Tremoiite, Anthophyllite and Actinolite in the same manner as asbestos fibers. However, the proposed regulation, while representing a major advance in the treatment of AT A for regulatory purposes, does not provide an adequate analytical method for distinguishing between asbestos and nonasbestos particles, nor an adequate description of the regulated minerals. This paper addresses those topics, recommending that OSHA include an appropriate mineralogical definition, and implement a discriminate counting procedure to distinguish asbestos from nonasbestos particles.

This paper presents an analytical technique for prediction of the damaged rock zone (DRZ) around a circular drift subjected to an anisotropic stress field (analytical solution exists only for the case of hydrostatic stress field). The method can readily be adapted to micro or personal computers. Stress concentrations around the drift are calculated at the centers of small rock elements, using the analytical solutions for a hole in an infinite plate. Potential failure of a rock element is assumed to be governed by the Coulomb failure criterion. When the failure condition is exceeded for an element, the excess shear stress is transferred to the neighboring elements. Progressive failure is allowed to occur until convergence is obtained. The final configuration of the damaged rock zone so obtained can be used to assess rock support requirements, as well as modified modulus and permeability of the DRZ.

Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) has recently completed the construction of copper leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning facilities at their Toquepala and Cuajone plants in Southern Peru. Much of the ore for these new operations is the result of the existing mining operations that have been in existence as early as 1959. At Toquepala, pre-conditioning and bacterial dump leaching of the sulfide ore that was too low in copper content to be processed through the copper concentrator began in 1987. The Cuajone heap leach operation is treating copper oxide ore that has been stockpiled since the Cuajone concentrator began operation in 1976. The pregnant leach solutions from the dump leaching at Toquepala and the permanent pad heap at Cuajone are combined into one plant feed solution. Adjacent to the large dumps at Toquepala, a solvent extraction and electrowinning facility has been constructed. The electrowinning facility has a planned annual production rate of35,000 metric tons per year Grade A cathode copper. Initial production of the cathode copper began in November 1995.

Designing an underground nuclear waste repository is a complex process. Although many decisions are involved before the design is complete, the first three--what the target horizon is, what the underground boundary is, and where the entry point will be located--are important because they establish the basis for the entire repository design. Even more important than these decisions, however, is the data on which the decisions are based. Because the current data are limited, an aggressive data gathering program is needed during the next design phase to augment information about the intricate interplay among all facets of the repository design and the geologic medium in which the proposed repository is to be developed. Although unique to modern engineering enterprises, the challenges involved in designing a repository in the unsaturated zone are within current technology and engineering practices.

"Atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) have been widely used in underground coal mines in the U.S. for the detection of fire in the belt entry and monitoring of other ventilation-related parameters such as airflow velocity and methane concentration in specific mine locations. In addition to an AMS being able to detect a mine fire, the AMS data has the potential to provide fire characteristic information such as fire growth (heat release rate) and exact fire location. This information is critical in making decisions regarding fire-fighting strategies, underground personnel evacuation, and optimal escape routes. In this study, a methodology was developed to calculate the fire heat release rate using AMS sensor data for carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and airflow velocity based on the theory of heat and species transfer in ventilation airflow. Full-scale mine fire experiments were then conducted in the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) Safety Research Coal Mine using an AMS with different fire sources. Sensor data collected from the experiments were used to calculate the heat release rates of the fires using this methodology. The calculated heat release rate was compared with the value determined from the mass loss rate of the combustible material using a digital load cell. The experimental results show that the heat release rate of a mine fire can be calculated using AMS sensor data with reasonable accuracy. INTRODUCTION Fires at different stages generate different gases and smoke toxicity hazards. When fires occur in underground mines, a significant amount of toxic gases and smoke enter the mine ventilation system and are carried throughout the mine ventilation network, increasing the hazard potential for personnel even if far away from the actual fire. Although fires that develop to the point of rapid flame spread pose imminent hazards, fires in their smoldering, pre-flaming stages can also contaminate the mine atmosphere with debilitating levels of smoke and toxic gases. The most important parameter for evaluating the fire hazard in mines is the heat release rate (HRR), which is directly related to the rate at which heat, smoke, and toxic gases are produced and transported by the ventilation system, and provides an indication of the time available for escape or firefighting [1]. The HRR is also an important input parameter to mine fire simulation models. Measuring the HRR of an actual fire can be a difficult task. Early experimental measurement of HRR focused on the heat output as represented by the temperature of the product gases. In ASTM E1321 (LIFT test), an array of thermocouples was positioned in a duct which captured all gaseous combustion products to measure their average temperature. This approach assumed the flow is adiabatic, which is never a reality. Significant progress on measuring HRR was made when Huggett showed that, for most common materials containing C, H, O, and N, the average heat release per unit mass of oxygen is 13.1 MJ/kg O2 [2]. Thus, the oxygen deficit is a measure of the HRR in the flow that the duct captures. This approach is termed oxygen consumption calorimetry (or the oxygen consumption method), and is widely used in the fire protection community."
