Heightened environmental consciousness has resulted in the development of various international accords dealing with natural resource management. This international awareness is now being translated into regional and local initiatives that proactively implement collaborative environmental management programs. One such program was recently initiated in northern Chile in recognition of the interconnection of Andean salars. Cooperative efforts between industry, governmental agencies and academic professionals have resulted in the implementation of simultaneous environmental monitoring of flora and fauna in the salars of northern Chile. This coordinated effort is leading to an improved understanding of the migratory patterns of South American fauna, as well as improved access to an expanded database for the multiple user groups associated with the Andean salars. The El Abra Mine is actively participating in these coordinated monitoring efforts.

"Continuous miners are often equipped with a flooded-bed dust scrubber to clean the air from close to an active underground coal mining face. However, its impingement screen is prone to clogging due to an accumulation of dust, thereby lowering the scrubber’s efficiency and potentially exposing the mine workers to higher levels of dust. Fans can compensate for the increased resistance by varying their operating parameters, but the scrubber screen needs significant maintenance which leads to downtime. The authors have proposed a suitably sized Vortecone as an alternative to the conventional flooded-bed dust scrubber system. Water is used as the filter medium, which is replaced and recycled continuously. Preliminary CFD investigations of Vortecone scrubbers have indicated higher cleaning efficacies, especially in the respirable range. This paper presents the results including the flow characteristics and capture efficacies of a full-scale Vortecone. Multi-phase flows, including free-surface modeling and particle tracking methods, have been adopted. These miners extract coal by the shearing action of the wethead cutting drums. Strategically placed water sprays on the drum not only cool the bits extending their useful service life, they also suppress the dust at the point of generation itself. A flooded-bed dust-scrubber (Campbell, et al. 1983) is usually integrated onto the continuous miner to arrest dust from close to the active face. These fan-powered scrubbers have an impingement screen flooded with water, which also serves as the filter element. A demister downstream of the screen removes the excess water from the air cleaned. These conventional scrubbers have been found to be very effective in alleviation of respirable dust levels underground (Chao and De-sheng 2000) (Colinet, Reed and Potts 2013). However, the inefficiencies of the flooded-bed dust scrubbers arise out of their internal components. Depending on the mining conditions, the screen may be clogged by the accumulation of the trapped dust particles. The resistance of the scrubber system is increased reducing the airflow. The flooded-bed dust-scrubber system would, therefore, require frequent maintenance of the screen and the demister (Listak 2010). Since any maintenance needs to be carried out under supported roof, this leads to loss of availability of the equipment as well. In addition to this, the continuous miner operators could be exposed to elevated levels of dust when satisfactory airflow at the face is not achieved."

Microbial leaching is being investigated as a method for recovering the metal values from a domestic low-grade manganese wad ore. Early work showed that heterotrophic microorganisms present in the ore solubilized manganese when cultured in a glucose-mineral salts medium. More recent shake-flask tests using molasses as the sole nutrient source extracted 97 pct of the manganese from minus 300- µm ore in 4 weeks. Column bioleaching with the molasses medium solubilized 99 pct of the manganese from minus 6.3-mm ore in 50 weeks. The results of flask, column, and lab-scale heap bioleaching studies are presented.

"Within the framework of the European project NeTTUN, the Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Building Sciences of ENTPE in Lyon (France) is in charge of a large experimental campaign to investigate the impact of tunneling on neighbouring piled structures. For this study, an original reduced-scale (around 1:10) physical model of EPBS is used. This ""1g"" laboratory model is able to reproduce the main features of the excavation method. For this new experimental program, the miniature EPBS advances inside a large tank filled with a model soil (dry sand), in which instrumented piles were pre-installed. In this paper, the authors describe briefly the original 3D device and present results concerning the impact of tunneling on a single pile located above the tunnel. Different tunneling face pressure are studied in connection with the practice. Machine parameters, pile solicitations and stress-strain behavior of the soil mass monitored under real time conditions are discussed. INTRODUCTION When tunnels are constructed in urban areas, they often come close to pre-existing structures, such as pile foundations. Perturbations of tunnel construction on these neighbouring structures must be considered during design and construction of the tunnel. Ground movements due to tunnelling may induce bending moments, lateral and vertical loads, settlements and lateral deflections in the piles, which may lead to structural damage or failure of the piles or the supported structure. The interaction between piles and a tunnel in construction is a complex three dimensional problem. To date, several experimental approaches have been carried out to analyse the effects of tunnelling on piled foundations (Bezuijen et al., 1994, Loganathan et al., 2000, Jacobsz et al. 2004, Lee and Basset, 2006, Marshall and Mair, 2011, ). These different studies carried out in the laboratory on 1 g or centrifuged models aim at a better understanding of tunnel - piles interaction and a quantification of the influence of each dominating parameter on the structural responses. Parameters like foundation type (single pile, group of piles) and geometry, relative tunnel – pile position, volume loss induced by tunnelling, ground characteristics, pile loading history were considered. However, most of these experiments were carried out under plane strain conditions by modelling the volume loss due to tunnel excavation by decreasing the tunnel diameter or the radial support pressure. As a result, these models do not adequately account for the variations of settlements both in the longitudinal and the transverse direction, which can induce significant flexional and torsional effects on the structures. These effects are particularly critical and detrimental in the case of historical monuments."

In 1986, a cooperative effort by the Homestake Mining company, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah was initiated to determine shaft stability while recovering high grade ore in a nearby pillar. Premining finite element simulations indicated the shaft would remain in elastic ground. Six years have elapsed and, despite some initial concern during the first lifts, it appears that the bulk of the original reserve will be safely and profitably recovered. An integrated application of rock mechanics tools from laboratory testing through numerical modelling to mine measurements and observations contributed substantially to the operational success of the project.

The solvent extraction of vanadium (V) from Na2CO3–NaHCO3 solution was attempted using Aliquat-336 (methyltrioctylammonium chloride) extractant dissolved in sulfonated kerosene as diluent with 2-octanol as phase modifier. The influence factors, such as Na2CO3 concentration, NaHCO3 concentration, temperature, extractant concentration and impurity P, on vanadiumextraction were investigated. The results revealed that the single stage extraction efficiency of vanadium reached above 89%from 20 g/L Na2CO3 – 20 g/L NaHCO3 solution under the following conditions: extractant concentration of 15%, room temperature of 20–30 °C, 2-octanol of 6%, phase ratio (O/A) of 1:1, and oscillation time of 1 min. The addition of NaHCO3 into Na2CO3 solution could lower the pH value of the Na2CO3 solution, improve extraction efficiency of vanadium, and not introduce other impurities. The phosphate anion did not interact with the vanadate anion in the Na2CO3–NaHCO3 solution. The P in the Na2CO3–NaHCO3 solution had little influence on vanadium extraction.

China was nota factor in the supply of fluorspar to the United States until the early 1980's when it shipped in its first package of Metallurgical lump, that not only was higher grade than the Mexican Metallurgical spar but was also about $30.00 a ton cheaper landed at Burnside. Representatives of the Mexican Fluorspar Institute and several producers made trips to see the Chinese operations supplying their once reserved market place. China, an enigma to most Westerners suddenly became the new contender, with prices that were disgustingly low or so thought the other exporters. Of course China has been mining, producing, consuming and exporting from 400,000 to 500,000 tons per year of various grades of fluorspar but until the first partloads came to the U.S., very little attention was paid to their exports by American-continent producers or consumers.

"More than 800 million tons of material will be excavated during large underground projects such as tunnels, undergrounds and power plants by 2030 in Europe only. The raw material excavated is often classified as waste, which involves environmental impact and transport issues: landfill areas, CO2 emissions and noise. But how can such massive amounts of material be transported, processed and deposited? Using the example of the AlpTransit Ceneri Base Tunnel (15.4 km), we show that suitable excavated materials can be used sustainably as a primary resource for tunnel concrete. This requires careful planning of the installations and storage areas by the client, timely building of the processing plants and other handling facilities outside the tunnel and a continuous evaluation of the raw material quality. 1. INTRODUCTION Spoil management is a central element of large construction projects. The systematic reuse of suitable excavated material not only saves natural resources, reduces transport distances and landfill volume, but can also decrease overall construction costs. Ideally, all of the concrete needed for tunnel lining can be produced with this on-site material. Such a natural resource management concept was applied for the construction of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel (L = 57 km). Spoil management concepts are, how-ever, difficult to implement and call for innovative techniques, sophisticated logistics and organization. In the context of large projects, environmentally friendly transport, processing and storage of millions of tons of excavated loose material represent another logistics challenge (Simmen & Lieb, 2010). This paper shows key factors that led to the successful completion of spoil management at the Ceneri Base Tunnel, which constitutes a part of the AlpTransit Gotthard Project (Figure 1)."

Previous research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines showed that autoclave cyanide leaching of used automobile exhaust catalysts for recovery of platinum group metals (PGM) was technically feasible. This work involves a more detailed investigation of the chemistry of the dissolution of PGM in cyanide solutions. The PGM species in solution identified by ultraviolet spectroscopy. Pt and Pd cyanide complexes were square were The planar in geometry, while the Rh complex was octahedral. The rate of dissolution of the PGM was also investigated using a rotating disk technique. Dissolution rates increased in the order of Rh, pt, and Pd, respectively.

The recent study by R. M. Hays(l) prompted the study summarized in this paper. In his Interesting paper, Mr. Hays shows fine results to be attainable by a relatively complex flowsheet on a semi-taconite, a manifestly difficult ore to treat. We obtained a semi -taconite from Minnesota, and treated this sample by wet magnetic separation alone. The device in which the separation was accomplished is the standard pilot-plant, laboratory separator in use at Magnetic Engineering Associates' laboratory (MEA) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It consists of a cylindrical space which can be magnetized by turning on the magnet of the separator. In this cylindrical space, there is a canister which provides the special configuration of the magnetic field and magnetic field gradients that MEA considers to be required. The ore pulp is made to flow through the canister while the current is on. A portion of the pulp is retained in the canister, and the rest is evolved as a non-magnetic fraction. The laboratory device is cyclic, but it accurately predicts the results obtainable by an Industrial unit of either cyclic or continuous type (moving matrix). The ore tested was 99.5°%o -325 mesh, and approximately 75% -500 mesh. The concentrate from this ore was, therefore, eminently suitable for pelletizing. In passing the ore through the magnet, we had the choice of repeatedly passing the concentrate from the first step through the operation, or of repeatedly passing the non-magnetics. "Stringent regulations and increased arsenic presence in ore bodies being exploited have created the need for cost effective and environmentally compliant technologies to remove selenium and arsenic from mine waters and metallurgical waste streams. Existing treatment methods have high life cycle costs and/or produce residues that, due to their unknown stability over the long-term, may represent future liabilities. This results in high compliance costs and uncertainties which negatively impact existing operations and projects in permitting. Selen-IX™ is a new ion exchange based process that selectively removes selenium from mine impacted waters down to 1 ppb while producing a stable inorganic iron-selenium product. Results of piloting completed on streams generated from coal and copper-gold deposits are presented along with preliminary equipment sizing and life cycle costs of full scale treatment. An example of a commercially available system for arsenic removal using sulphide precipitation is presented. The benefit of this treatment method is discussed based on recently completed technical feasibility assessment including laboratory testing and preliminary engineering design. INTRODUCTION Selenium Due to the chemical similarity between selenium and sulfur, selenium substitutes sulfur in many minerals that can be found in a wide range of deposits including coal, base metal, precious metal, phosphate, and uranium. One of the main environmental challenges facing the industry in North America today is related to the removal of hexavalent selenium, e.g. selenate, to ultralow levels, typically between 1 to 10 ppb, from large flows of often cold water containing less than 1,000 ppb of selenium. Recent studies commissioned by the industry identified biological selenium reduction systems as the best available technology. Although the biological selenium reduction process is commercially proven in certain applications to remove selenium to ultralow discharge levels, the technology has been primarily applied to relatively low and constant flows of warm water produced by the Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers in the power generation industry. The wide spread adoption of this treatment method by the mining industry is hindered by high capital and operating costs associated with treating large flows of cold water, lack of data and knowledge about the long term stability of solid residues produced by this treatment, and limited capacity of biological systems to respond to sudden changes in flow and/or mass load of contaminants. Furthermore, it has been reported that reaching discharge limits less than 3 ppb could be a challenge and that polishing treatment for the removal of BOD and phosphate maybe required to avoid the impact of the biological treatment which requires organics and nutrients, on aquatic environment downstream of treatment plants. Alternate treatment systems are being developed to overcome and/or completely avoid some of the challenges of biological systems. One such treatment system is BioteQ’s Selen-IX™ process which is purely physico-chemical treatment system."

A nano-scale investigation has been carried out by applying an AFM (atomic force microscope) to study in situ the adsorption of various collectors, i.e., oleic acid, octanohydroxamic acid (HA), and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), on bastnaesite in aqueous solutions. The obtained AFM images show that the surface morphology of bastnaesite changes greatly after it contacts the solutions of the collectors, suggesting that all these collectors can effectively adsorb on bastnaesite. Increasing temperature can help increase the adsorption of oleic acid on bastnaesite. FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) results also show that all these collectors adsorb strongly on bastnaesite with a strong absorbance spectra being detected, which confirms with the results obtained with AFM imaging analysis. In general, hydroxamic acid collector (HA and SHA) adsorbs on bastnaesite mainly in the form of insoluble metal hydroxamate. This specific adsorption mechanism explains that a high selectivity with a moderate collectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of bastnaesite. INTRODUCTION Rare earth metals, which are very important to modern industry, are generally extracted from numerous rare earth minerals. In practice, however, the actual extraction of rare earth is mainly from bastnaesite, monazite and xenotime. The Mountain Pass mine is one of the largest rare earth mine in the world, at which the main rare earth mineral is bastnaesite. In the past years, froth flotation has been applied to the beneficiation of Mountain Pass ore. In practice, the rare earth ore is usually crushed, milled and further separated from calcite, barite and other gangue minerals by froth flotation, in which the rare earth oxide-bearing minerals stick to aerated bubbles in the pulp and float to the surface, leaving the gangue at the bottom of the flotation cell and disposed of as tailings.(Bulatovic, 2010) In spite of the fact that froth flotation has been applied to treat the bastnaesite ore at the Mountain Pass mine, the rare earth oxide (REO) recovery is still low,(Anderson, 2015) especially compared to the one obtained with sulfide flotation. For example, the typical recovery obtained at the Mountain Pass mine was only about 70%. This may be due to the low selectivity of the collector (oleic acid). In addition, to enhance the flotation selectivity, the pulp in the mine circuit has to be heated up to 70 to 90°C and it involves a lot of energy consumption. Last but not the least, a lot of depressants have to be added to improve the selectivity of flotation process. Therefore, it is critical to re-examine the existing flotation process at the Mountain Pass mine and seek any chance of improvement. (Anderson, 2015)

"One method to increase the exploitation rate of a mine is the use of backfill with residual materials in exploited areas. The backfilled material is meant to support both, the walls of galleries and pillars as well as the roof of mining openings. With increasing depth, the exploitation rate diminishes fast, thus the application of backfill in order to change the layout of the mine is crucial for economic success. In result of using backfill, it is possible to change the layout of the working area with a higher ratio to excavated areas and less area occupied by pillars. Thus it is possible to boost the output of a mine by using backfill. Setting the criteria for the selection of the best possible materials and whose improvement, it is useful to know about their qualities and handicaps. The Mining Department at TU Bergakademie Freiberg is analyzing the parameters of residues from different processing methods, accrued in plants of different potash mines and blending different residues for optimization of material attributes. These were significantly characterized by basically parameters like the size and the distribution of different diameters of the grain material. INTRODUCTION The chair for underground mining methods at TU Bergakademie Freiberg is tasked with the sufficient and sustainable supply of economics with raw materials. The steady high demand, the rising prices and the finiteness of the deposits are reasons for the need of an optimized economic utilization of natural deposits, a continuous improvement of mining technics and technology. From an ecological and economical position the best possible utilization of the resources has to be achieved. Many mining operations are by reasons of the deposit not able to haul valuable minerals only, they have to haul a mixture of valuable minerals and waste rock. This hauled combination is given into the processing plant for separation and enrichment of the valuable mineral. The residuals of the processing are commonly dumped to a waste rock pile. For minimizing the size of such a waste rock pile and also minimizing the ecological footprint of a mining operation the only way is minimizing the quantity of accruing waste rock material. Both, optimization of economic utilization and also minimization of waste rock dumps can be realized in one by backfill with processing waste rock material in mined out areas. Especially in mines, mined by room and pillar method, smaller dimension of the pillars are sufficient for safety and stability. By the way less valuable minerals have to be leaved back in the mine and the mine outcome is increasing."

A detailed laboratory study was carried out to investigate the effect of the particle size distribution on the grinding rate parameters, Si, for the dry ball milling of quartz and limestone. Contrary to the present belief, the Si values were found to vary strongly with the particle size distribution. In particular it was observed that: (i) the Si values increased with the fineness of the particulate charge - the increase being more pronounced in the case of the coarser sizes, (ii) the next finer size class had the maximum effect on the breakage of the particles of a given size class, while the coarser size classes had only a slight effect, (iii) the effect of two or more size classes was non-additive, and significant higher order inter-size interactions were indicated. The importance of these results in the context of the analysis, design and scale-up of the comminution systems is discussed.

One of the major improvements in ore grinding economics in North America has been the introduction of autogenous grinding. The history of this has been well documented in previous AIME presentations and in the literature. Pickands Mather & Co. has been very active in the development of autogenous grinding since 1957. This early work led to the application of autogenous grinding to the Wabush Mines ore in 1965, with the installation of 6-24 ft. diameter by 8 ft. long - 1,750 HP mills. Development work recently completed in 1971 on another ore has led to the decision to install 5-36 ft. diameter by 15 ft. long - 12,000 HP mills when this project goes ahead. Between these two decisions lies a tremendous amount of research, development, and application of autogenous grinding to a variety of ores. The Pickands Mather Metallurgical and Research Laboratory in Hibbing, Minnesota has tested, in its pilot plant facility, ores from 9 different deposits. Some of these deposits have as much difference within their own ore types as there is between the various deposits. Therefore, it is safe to say that over 20 different ore types have been tested and flowsheets developed for commercial applications. Of the 9 projects, 3 are in operation. These are Wabush Mines in Labrador, Canada, (1) Savage River Mines in Tasmania, (2) and The Griffith Mine in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada. (3) Pilot plant work has encompassed over 300 individual tests. These tests were carried out in mills that were 5-1/2, 8, and 12 ft. in diameter. Grinding power requirements for the primary autogenous milling has varied from 2 to 30 KWH/Lt of crude ore.

In order to protect coal mine owners, operators, and lending institutions from potential environmental liabilities, responsible parties must maintain a thorough understanding of the environmental disposition of the property they control, and the ramifications of impending laws and regulations. The best way to accomplish this is to periodically conduct a Phase I Environmental Audit. The systematic approach of an audit will reveal areas of DOD compliance with SMCRA and EPA regulations which the coal owner and/or operator will be able to use to correct deficiencies and prevent the occurrence of conditions which could lead to permit block, fines, and ultimately reduced productivity.

A micro-scale investigation was carried out by applying atomic force microscopy (AFM) to study in situ the adsorption of various collectors, i.e., oleic acid, octanohydroxamic acid (HA), and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), on bastnaesite in aqueous solutions. The adsorption behavior of silver in ammoniacal solutions on to activated carbon has been studied. The parameters affecting the adsorption of silver on to activated carbon included temperature, agitation speed, concentration of cations and anions as well as that of ammonia. It was found that the adsorption of silver from ammoniacal solutions was dependent upon the initial silver concentration in the solution and other factors. The recovery of silver from ammoniacal solutions was found to be not so effective as the case with gold reported earlier. The adsorption rate was relatively slow overall, despite a rather fast initial adsorption. The apparent activation energy for the adsorption was measured to be 30.2 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of the silver adsorption on activated carbon was limited by a mixed control mechanism.

The decision to accelerate development of Stillwater Mining's East Boulder Mine was made in March of 1998. It required the completion of conceptual designs by July of 1998. This was accomplished through teamwork and close cooperation of mine personnel, engineering firms and vendors, all working toward the common goal of developing an efficient and workable design. Early in the project, representatives of Stillwater Mining, Kilborn International, Parsons Brinckerhoff Transit and Rail Systems, Continental Conveyor, and H.A. Simons met to develop methods to bring the mine into production at a highly accelerated rate and to solve potential bottlenecks, including the movement of personnel, materials, and muck through a 5.6 km (3-1/2 mile) adit. This interaction, including companies not normally associated with the mining industry, led to innovative approaches and designs produced by Kilborn Engineering and Stillwater Mining.

Meramec Mining Company, owned 50% by St. Joseph Lead Company and 50% by Bethlehem Steel Corporation,- is engaged in the mining, concentrating and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine which is located in the rugged, wooded Missouri Ozarks about 15 miles from the town of Sullivan or 75 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the middle 1950's by the St. Joseph Lead Company during the Company's intensive exploration program to discover new lead orebodies to replace the declining reserves of the famous Southeast Missouri Lead Belt. An airborne magnetometer survey was run by the U.S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Survey and several mining companies, (of which St. Joseph Lead Company was the principal supporter). The survey was published in 1950 and disclosed an anomaly in the vicinity of Pea Ridge. In 1950 test drill holes disclosed that under some 1300 feet of sediments there did exist an iron deposit of probable commercial significance.
