This paper describes a new approach for examining the kinetics and mechanism of zinc dissolution from sphalerite concentrate in acidic ferric sulfate solution in the presence of manganese dioxide. A literature search was performed to access the possible action of the two oxidizing agents, i.e., ferric ion and manganese dioxide. The possibility of galvanic coupling between ZnS and MnO2 and the cyclic action of the redox couple, Fe2+/Fe3+, on these two minerals were theoretically examined based on corrosion principles. Expressions for the mixed potential (Em) and the mixed current (im) were derived for the relevant corrosion and galvanic couples. Leaching experiments were conducted to establish which of the above phenomena is operative during leaching. The results indicated that the dissolution mostly occurs by the action of ferric ion on ins producing ferrous ions. The presence of MnO2 enables a quick conversion of ferrous to ferric, which maintains the rate of in dissolution. The process has promising features for commercial exploitation.

In recent years planning of surface mines in general and reclamation and post-mining land uses in particular have become very complex. Due to the lack of suitable techniques, land use plans are rarely based upon structured decisions. Data collection may be conducted in a rigorous manner and certain analyses may be performed on the data; the decision to put the land to a specific use, however, is finally based upon the intuitive judgment of one or several individuals. This paper demonstrates how techniques from fuzzy set theory can be used in order to select an optimum post-mining land use plan. The various land use planning alternatives have been characterized according to both qualitative information and quantitative factors and the "fuzzy" aspects of the collected information are incorporated into the analyses. In a practical application, the methodology is used to obtain the most reasonable solution to a post-mining land use planning problem in Interior Alaska.

Although it may be perfectly acceptable to neglect the belt's elastic behavior for many conveyor designs, this can lead to disastrous consequences for others. So how can a designer know in advance if a dynamic analysis is required? Unfortunately, in many cases it is impossible to foresee or predict dynamic problems prior to performing the actual analysis. However, a basic understanding of the principles of conveyor dynamics, as well as knowledge regarding common problem areas, can significantly help the designer make more educated decisions during the initial design stage. This paper will demonstrate how static calculations alone can incorrectly represent the true behavior of the conveyor system. It will also discuss the importance of correctly sizing and locating the take-up system to provide the most economical conveyor design. The use of capstans will also be discussed followed by two examples demonstrating their proper operation.

When planning for the required amount of storage capacity at a proposed open-pit coal mine or determining when additional storage capacity should be added to an existing operation, the decision must be based on a breakeven- analysis relating the discounted cost of capital for storage capacity to the marginal costs incurred for additional crew call-outs on weekends and demurrage charges. The model developed in this paper uses simulation techniques applied to two coal mines in the Powder-River Basin to determine how much storage capacity is needed and when it is needed. The paper also generalizes the simulation model so that it can be applied to any type of open-pit mining operation. Two important results of the model are (1) all of the mines in the Powder River Basin have excessive amounts of storage capacity, and (2) management is provided with estimates of the total number of hours that crews will have to work on the weekends as annual tonnage increases, and the levels of demurrage costs incurred.

In spite of the increasingly high capital investment required for longwall mining equipment, there continues to be a steady trend towards this form of mining. This move is caused in large part by improved productivity of longwall mining systems combined with greater percentage of coal recovered over room and pillar mining, reduced manpower requirements, and the inherent safety of the system. Longwall mining is most amenable to the greater depths experienced by many mining operations, particularly in the coalfields of the Eastern United States. Two primary problems in the installation of a longwall panel are determining whether a particular seam is suitable for longwall and, secondly, type and capacity of equipment required for such a mining operation. In addition, recent legislation has forced an evaluation of the surface effects of longwall mining with a view to determining what, if any, surface damage might result from extracting any particular panel. These factors must be determined using large and often complex quantities of geological, structural, mining, and surface data. This makes the problem most attractive to solution using the computer.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential for in situ mining (ISM) of gold and silver mineralization. This preliminary study examined samples from several types of deposits. It used light optical microscopy and the electron microprobe to characterize the ore and gangue minerals and textural features of these samples. This included the spacial relations between the target minerals and likely natural fluid channel ways. Low-grade disseminated deposit types from the western US were found to contain fracture- hosted or matrix-hosted gold and silver minerals, some of which are encapsulated by quartz or pyrite. Successful ISM application to gold and silver deposits needs this data in order to understand potential problems of the lixiviant reaching the ore minerals.

The effects of certain variables on the extraction of gold by thioureation have been investigated on a quartzose gold-bearing ore using a statistical multifactorial strategy. The factors taken into consideration were milling time (which corresponds to a given grain size), oxidant concentration, thiourea concentration and liquid/solid ratio. The influence of these four variables was ascertained first by a full factorial design at two levels for each variable (16 runs). This permitted the estimation of first-order effects of the factors affecting the process. Then 9 runs were added whose levels were both in the centre of and outside the axes of the previous plan thus originating a central composite design. This permitted estimation both of second-order effects of the factors involved and of parameters of a second-order polynomial model. The results show that extraction of gold depends only on milling time and oxidant concentration, at least in the experimental range considered. The equation fitting experimental data, as calculated by the least squares method, allows a response surface to be drawn. Due to the low gold grade of the ore (6 ppm) statistical analysis could lead to contradictory results, hence strict observance of Gy's rules for sampling and very accurate and precise chemical analyses were required.

This study deals with the development and utilization of computer models for evaluating the extent to which variability of raw material grades can be reduced from the deposit to the processing plant. The specific case of a cement works is examined. The deposit and the elementary quarring operations were modeled for the medium and long-term planning of production with the objective of predicting grade variability of the flow stream in time. The feeds inferred from previous modellings were used for simulating storage operations. In particular, the storage process (linear stockpile, as an alternative, blending from various heaps) was modelled in order to select the main parameters of the process to minimize grade variations of the feed to mill. The ways followed for modelling the prehomogenization process are described. The homogenization performance and efficiency in the silo stage has also been studied and an estimate made of the distribution of residence time on the basis of input and output sampling.

In this paper we apply continuous-time option pricing theory (Dixit 8 Pindyck 1994) to show how to obtain an optimal investment rule for a mining project which requires sequential in- vestments. The application per se is to some extent very simple. The main purpose of the paper, however, is to draw the attention of mining people to how the option pricing theory may be used to capital investment decisions. This topic in economics is quite new but is attracting a lot of attention.

Construction records from six projects which employed full-face TBMs to drive 18 km of tunnel in sedimentary rock have been analyzed. More than twenty individual causes of delay could be identified. Delay causes are characterized on the basis of frequency and duration of incidents. Average utilization and downtime distributions are presented for each project, and frequency distributions of downtime per shift are discussed.

The Central Florida Phosphate District is located in southwestern Polk, southeastern Hillsborough, Manatee, and Hardee Counties, Florida, flanking the.southern end of a major structural uplift known a the Ocala arch. Ore control problems here are varied and unique due to non-homogeneity of matrix and high volume mining operations. Overburden stripping and matrix mining are performed by large draglines, the matrix being slurrified and transported to the processing plants hydraulically. Production geologists' responsibilities include, 1) prediction of special mining problems, 2) prediction of ore quality and quantity, and 3) the physical control of the ore quality and recovery during mining. prediction is based on core drilling and visual inspection and analysis of the core samples. Basic economic, and physical minability criteria are thus established. Ore grade and tonnage recovery are of particular importance with emphasis being placed on coordination between mining and processing personnel. Routine inspection of the working pit face is of prime importance and both physical and quality variations are pointed out to the mining supervision. Physical problems in ore control occur due to erratic clay, dolomitic limestone and sand lenses. Near surface ground water is abundant, posing a threat to recovery. Contaminants of the phosphate ore are large quartz grains, pebbles of cemented quartz sand, clay balls, iron oxide laminac and dolomitic limestone particles. Success of the ore control program is predicated on a balance between predicted ore tonnages and grade and actual production. The geologists' primary attention is directed toward this balance.

Since the advent of longwall mining systems in the United States, mine operators are increasingly relying on methane drainage techniques to supplement the ventilation system. The most commonly used technique is the vertical gob borehole. The number and spacing of vertical gob boreholes per panel is generally based on experience and underground conditions. To design a more efficient methane drainage systems, mine operators must accurately determine methane gas produced. Thus, mine operators must monitor gas flow and methane gas concentration on every vertical gob borehole on active panels at least once or twice during each 8-hr shift. As the mine grows, it is possible to have more than one operating longwall and many vertical gob boreholes. Thus, daily visits to each vertical gob borehole site can become very time consuming. During weekends when methane gas concentrations typically drop because there is no mining activity, borehole sites may not be visited. To obtain accurate gas flow data, a gob borehole monitoring system was designed and constructed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). Gas flow, methane gas concentration, gas temperature, barometric pressure, and vacuum pressure of the exhaust fan are the parameters collected by the system. The system also includes circuitry for automatic shutdown of the exhaust fan and an alarm system before an unsafe condition is created. Telemetry components were also integrated into the system to allow for transmission of borehole data to the mine office. As a test, the system was installed and operated on a vertical gob borehole for six months. Test results indicated that intermittent measurements with hand-held instruments from vertical gob boreholes were always higher than gas flows measurements made by the gob gas analyzer system. This paper describes the system components, operational characteristics, and the results of the test program.

INTRODUCTION A trend which is obvious in the United Kingdom and is thought to be evident in other parts of the Western world is the disproportionate rise in the cost of tunnel mining labour compared with other tunnel cost increases. This disproportionate increase in labour costs has been accompanied by, and may be the result of, a shortage of skilled working labour. To combat this problem there has been a steady increase in the use of machines for excavation and for the erection of tunnel linings to keep the amount of skilled labour working below ground to a minimum. The typical tunnelling cycle, where the ground needs continuous support can be excavation, temporary support, temporary lining, grouting and permanent lining. It is obviously an advantage to combine as many of these operations as possible and carry out as much as possible by machine. Machines have been developed which will, either alone or used in combination with a shield, excavate and, when necessary, temporarily support the excavation. If a segmental lining is used, it can be so designed that it will form the permanent lining and reduce the cycle time and skilled labour requirement to a minimum. In cases in which the ground can be cut accurately to a smooth profile and will stand without support for a sufficient time, the lining can be expanded against the ground and the necessity of grouting eliminated. In cases in which ground will not stand without support, the usual method is to use a bolted lining and to grout behind it preferably as the shield is shoved forward. INTRODUCTION, CONCEPTS, AND MEASUREMENT Introduction Periods in the history of man, from his earliest appearance to the present, are often characterized by the principal materials used. In nearly all cases, the material or fuel is of mineral origin-stone, copper, bronze, iron, coal, and so forth-indicating the principal ingredient of the tools or source of power of the period. Each of these periods represented great improvement over the preceding one in terms of human well-being, as measured by population growth and other indicators (Cipolla, 1978). A major reason for the improvements in production and well-being was the nature of the material or fuel, each successively superior to the preceding, which made it possible to produce more food, fuel, shelter, and clothing with a given amount of labor. If we accept this well-documented description of economic progress as accurate, we may then turn to the consideration of two related questions concerning this development. The first, easily answered,-is why man spent long periods of time (millenia, in many cases) making tools from inferior materials, such as copper, instead of passing directly to superior materials, such as iron and steel. The second, closely related question, concerns the relation between the rate of economic growth and the quantity of mineral reserves available at any time. For the first question, the answer is that the technology required to discover, extract, and process each successive material had to be discovered and developed before the material could be used. Once the technology was available, the new material could be and was exploited widely, raising productivity-output per unit of labor- and consequent consumption per person. This familiar idea underlies a fundamental principle of the economics of resources, namely, at any time, available resources depend upon available technology. No mineral or other raw material is a resource unless the technology has been developed to utilize it. But once the technology is at hand, the new resources associated with it provide the means for economic growth and rising levels of living. This principle is subject to certain conditions. For example, governments or other institutions may prevent a mineral from being used, even though the technology is available. And, if a mineral is located in a remote place, transportation charges may make it uneconomic to exploit. Such minor qualifications do not, however, change the thrust of the argument that technology is the overriding determinant. With respect to the second question, it might seem apparent that the greater the quantity of reserves available, up to some point, the more economic growth will be facilitated. This line of reasoning leads to the conclusion that as re- serves are consumed the quantity available will be reduced and economic growth will eventually be restrained. Reasoning of this sort underlies much popular (and scholarly) thought, in which depletion of mineral and other resources is assumed to lead to constraints on economic growth, through higher materials costs and absolute limitations on materials use. Dow Chemical Co.'s research in lignite gasification has required that the fuel be upgraded in terms of ash loading and the slagging character of the residual ash. Lignite beneficiation has been shown to substantially reduce the total ash loading and, in some cases, causes very significant reductions in slag viscosity. In support of this work, a slag viscometer was constructed and the viscous flow properties of lignite ash were run as a function of temperature and composition. The flow as a function of temperature was shown to be predictable from the chemical composition.
