Analyses of accident records show that a better understanding of very basic strata control principles and practices, by production personnel, will improve worker safety. Workers, lack of knowledge, with respect to aspects of strata control, increases their exposure to such strata control risks. The primary objective of the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) project 02 02 07 was to develop tools for the transfer of strata control knowledge. Four such tools were developed, three of which focused on illiterate underground mine team members who are not yet able to take advantage of the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) learning process (see project outcomes 2, 3 and 4 below). The tools were designed to equip these workers with sufficient knowledge and ability to work safely underground until such time as they can take advantage of the MQA system. Project outcomes: 1 A four-minute video using animation to illustrate the causes and prevention of falls of roof in South African collieries. 2 Software to demonstrate the capability of reconstructing, interactively, accident scenes and actions that have taken place underground in stopes. 3 A strata control bridging course for illiterate mine team workers. 4 Small-scale wooden models that will be used to design life-size mock-up facilities to assist with the above mentioned bridging course. 5 Workshops and presentations to demonstrate the outcomes 1to 4 above.

Ticor South Africa is currently involved in the mining and processing of a heavy mineral oredeposit at Hillendale Mine on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. The orebody is characterized by a high ultra fine fraction (-45µm) that has a variable rheological behaviour when subjected to shear and hydration. Experience at Hillendale has shown that the ultra fine mineral tailings are sensitive to shear history in terms of shear intensity and shear duration as well as hydration history. This phenomenon expresses itself right through the primary beneficiation process influencing the mineral separation, but is especially prevalent on the residue disposal i.e. slurry transport and deposition on the tailings impoundment. Tube viscometer test work was conducted on the flocculated fine tailings that indicated that there was a change in rheology as a result of shear. This paper presents the results of the on-site test work conducted at the mine to measure the rheology at various stages in the process.

In 1992, a paper was compiled highlighting a common-sense approach to electric smelting at Impala Platinum. Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes. Solvent extraction of Cu from acidic leach, using an oxime extractant, e.g. LIX 984 or Acorga is a well-known and establishedprocess. As the process advances, Cu is extracted to the solvent and is replaced by H+in the aqueous phase. At high acidity the distribution coefficient of Cu between the solvent and the aqueous phase decreases, and eventually a relatively high concentration of Cu remains in the raffinate, regardless of the number of equilibrium stages. In many processes this phenomenon is immaterial, as the raffinate returns to the leaching and no copper is lost. But when the copper raffinate is used for processing of additional metals, minimal concentration of Cu in the raffinate is essential for an effective process. The recommended process includes three steps: SX-1?standard extraction of Cu with oxime. The resulting raffinate contains about 6?8 g/lCu and 50 g/lH2SO4. SX-N?Extraction of most of the acid into an amine-based solvent, and stripping it with a base, e.g. aqueous ammonia, caustic, Na2CO3etc. The extraction removes no metals, but decreases the concentration of acid from 50 to10 g/l. SX-2?Extraction of the neutralized solution once more with oxime, to remove the residual copper. Such a process enables one to get down to 100?150 ppm Cu in the final raffinate. This process was developed and tested in the R&D facility at Chambishi Metals plc, by a joint team of Chambishi & Bateman, using Cognis LIX 984N and real solutions from the plant. In the laboratory the equilibrium isotherms for SX-1, SX-2 and the neutralization were developed. Computer simulation of the results showed that the optimal configuration is two stages for both extraction and stripping for SX-1. For SX2, 2?3 stages of extraction and two stages of stripping are needed. The stripping stages may be common to both SX-1 and SX-2. The neutralization of SX1 raffinate was tested both by conventional precipitation with lime and by extraction with alamine-based solvent extraction and stripping with a solution of 10% NaOH. For the SX-N only one stage was needed for both the extraction and stripping. The bench scale pilot plant was run for both SX-1 and SX-2. The results were very similar to the simulated ones, and the configuration of 2E2S for SX-1 and 3E2S for SX 2 delivered the required raffinate with less than 150 ppm Cu.

The Palabora Mining Company has successfully extended the life of its operation by developing a 30 000 tpd block cave underground mine below the now closed open pit. The process of transitioning from surface to underground mining has been technically, operationally and managerially challenging. This has been due to a number of factors, in particular, the development of a block cave in a very competent rock mass. The competence of the rock mass is clearly demonstrated in the open pit that preceded the block cave, one of the steepest deep open pit excavations in the world. With cave breakthrough, however, the pit was ?instantaneously? deepened by 400 m causing a major failure of the north-west wall involving close to 100 Mt of waste material.

ERPM was formed in 1893 and as a result of its age, a large volume of data exists in a paper-based format and it was decided to electronically capture data in one of two critical mining areas?namely at Far East Vertical (FEV) Shaft Area (Lower Areas) and Hercules Shaft Area (Upper Areas). The life of mine is dependent on tonnage and grade from these areas. Geostatistical evaluation of the gold reserves has been applied on an ad hoc basis in the Hercules Shaft Area and on a continuous basis in the FEV area. This is the first evaluation using geostatistics that was performed on the Upper Areas. This paper is based on the premise that regardless of cut-off grades, geostatistical estimation (kriging) estimates and locates reserves better than ?traditional? methods e.g. polygonal method, inverse squared distance method and it endeavours to estimate and locate the high grade reserves in the Main Reef Leader of Upper Areas.

A low noise blast hole drilling system was developed to limit the risk of noise induced hearing impairment in mining operations. Noise induced hearing loss has been identified as a major occupational health risk in SA mines. The noise generated by pneumatic percussion drills is a major contributor to such noise induced hearing. This motivated the South African Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) to commission the development of a low noise rock drill system. The system had to be designed, manufactured, tested and demonstrated in a simulated underground mining environment. The specification required noise levels below 90 dBA. Other important design considerations were ease of manual transport, setting up and operation. The primary design concept was to encapsulate a standard Seco S215 pneumatic rock drill in a composite material tube. The tube is pushed onto the rock face by a pneumatic cylinder and is sealed at the rock face by an elastic seal. The drill is pulled towards the rock face by a rope and pulley mechanism fitted inside the tube. This mechanism is powered by a second pneumatic cylinder. The actions of moving and setting the drill require two persons. However, the team can carry out the drilling function itself on several drills simultaneously because of the self-thrusting design. The drill is supported by two camlocks. The exhaust (air containing dust, water, rock shavings, oil and grease) is removed from the encapsulating tubes via exhaust tube to the end of the stope. In this way exhaust noise and air pollutants are disposed of away from personnel. Tests were conducted in a test stope. Noise levels of under 90 dBA were achieved, thereby attaining the primary design specification. This was achieved without materially compromising ease of handling. Penetration rate was somewhat improved compared to that of the standard drill, so that productivity could be maintained. Keywords: Drill, rock drill, quiet, noise, mine, underground.

In addition to a range of pyrometallurgical options, Mintek specialises in DC arc furnace technology and has pilot plant facilities up to 5.6 MVA, as well as a strong base in process and arc modelling. Industrial processes have been developed for ferrochromium production, ilmenite smelting, and cobalt recovery from slag. Recent work has been done on such processes as the production of ferronickel from laterite ores, the fuming and condensation of magnesium, and the recovery of platinum group metals from 'difficult' feedstocks.

Mechanization in low-stope panels situated in hard rock infers roof support by tensile bolting to allow free passage of trackless mining equipment in the production areas. This is in sharp contrast to conventional mining, where compressive roof supports?such as timber and grout packs?have traditionally been used, up to 1.5 metres from the production face. Bolting is a hazardous operation because material is dislodged from the roof during the drilling activity. Even with temporary roof support installed, small pieces of rock are dislodged by the percussive action of the drifter. Operations with the man situated directly under the drill, during the drilling activity, are hazardous. The only way to remove the hazard is to move the man away from the machine for as much as possible throughout the complete cycle Costs associated with safety cannot be quantified, but need to form part of the decision-making process. Machine selections based on purchase and running costs alone do not justify the investment cost of mechanized bolters. The equipment selection process needs to take into account the total cost of mining as well as the human safety impact and loss of production costs from having to re-bolt roofs in a production panel to prevent falls of ground. Labour costs in mechanized low-stope bolting are between one-quarter and half the labour costs of non-mechanized bolting. This paper reviews the mechanized bolting option versus handheld bolting from a mining process and cost perspective in a hard rock, low-stope room-and-pillar mining operation in the platinum and chrome industries.

The leaching of zinc and copper from Nigerian bulk sulphide ore with sulphuric acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide was studied. The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant for the sulphuric acid leaching of zinc and copper from a complex sulphide ore. Distribution of elementals within the various particle sizes was initially determined by ICP-OES and XRF to provide a basis for explaining the dissolution process. The effects of concentration of hydrogen peroxide, particle size, stirring speed, and leaching time at a constant temperature of 298K were studied. There were variations in elemental and mineralogical composition within the different sizes. The concentrations of zinc and copper reduced as particle size decreased while silica, sulphur, iron and lead contents increased. Dissolution results showed that the leaching rate of copper was lower than that of zinc. The highest recoveries of zinc and copper were obtained at a leaching time of 180 minutes, stirring speed of160 rpm, particle size of 75 µm and a concentration of 1M H2SO4/1MH2O2. It was observed that the leaching rate of zinc and copper increased with increasing hydrogen peroxide concentration. Increased stirring speed had a negative leaching effect as it promotes hydrogen peroxide decomposition. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The Union Section of Anglo Platinum is situated ±18 km west of the town of Northam on the north-western rim of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. Both the Merensky and UG2 reefs are mined. Support of the Merensky stoping areas with rock bolts is specifically problematic due to the stoping width restrictions varying around 90 cm. The installation equipment of in-stope rock bolts and the effectiveness thereof in the Merensky stoping areas was critically evaluated. In order to do this a background research on the need for better on-the-face support had to be conducted. The need for improving the rock bolt drilling and the equipment had to be investigated and the financial implications and justifications for the improved equipment examined. To conduct the search an overall study was done on the rockfalls and safety aspects throughout the platinum industry in South Africa and specifically Union Section. It was found that most of the rock falls in the Merensky stoping areas of which ± 70% are less than 1.2 m in thickness generally occurs within 4 m from the face and causes ± 60% of the in-stope injuries. Serious shortcomings had been identified with respect to the airleg, rock drill machine and the drill steels used in the drilling of the rock bolt holes. Through experimentation, using a testing frame built for this purpose on surface and with the co-operation of mine staff and suppliers, a number of possible modifications were identified and tested. This resulted in the final product with which it was possible to drill a 1.2 m hole in the hangingwall of the stopes ranging with an angle to the hanging from 90° for a 90 cm stoping width and 67° for a 80 cm stoping width. It is confidently concluded that this system will effectively improve the total face support and result in a substantial reduction of rock falls and consequently the occurrence of injuries and fatalities in the Merensky stoping areas. The installation of rock bolts on the face with the modified drilling equipment will increase the direct support, but the system has a potential of a substantial reduction in the profile stick support density and an increase in productivity in the stoping areas due to fewer occurrences of rock falls. It was finally concluded that effective modifications to the drilling equipment for rock bolt in-hole drilling could be made and the installation thereof in the stope face is adequately justified.

Raw material fed into a processing or refining plant is required to be uniform in composition for several reasons. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to the process. The problem is more complicated in the case of multiple ore sources. The idea behind the research is that theoretical blending ratios can serve not only to meet predefined specific criteria but also to reduce grade fluctuations of variables under consideration. In this paper, the problem is formulated as a quadratic programming problem, whose objective function is in quadratic form and constraints are linear. A case study was conducted on a data set from an iron orebody to demonstrate the technique. The objective was to minimize the blend variability in terms of each variable (in this study, iron, silica, alumina and lime) grade of ores extracted in three different production faces. The stockpile capacity, lower and upper limits of each variable satisfying operational requirements and non-negativity were constrained to the model. A modified simplex method developed by Wolfe was used for solving the blending and homogenization problem. The promising results can be used as apart of the stacking and reclaiming design. An independent technical audit by a consultant is part of the accountability process of publicly owned or publicly quoted companies when raising finance through share issues or loans or the sale of equity, and of banks or development funds when granting loans. Africa is undergoing a renaissance in investment in its mining industry. It is forecast that capital investment, in major mining projects in Africa, will be over US$ 4.4 billion, in the next few years. Most, if not all, of the capital to be raised will require an independent technical audit. The aim of this paper is to assist the management of mining companies seeking finance in appreciating the role of such technical audits. The reasons for such audits, especially to attract international investment, are listed. The role of the audit is explained in assessing the underlying robustness of the company as ?a going concern? and the viability of any ?expansion plans?. Its use is emphasised in establishing the underlying value of the company based on the mine life as supported by the mineral reserves. The independent consultant role is stressed as a representative of the parties in a finance deal who cannot, in practice, carry out their own detailed and specialized technical due diligence. The various components of a typical audit are examined with examples of critical matters which may require resolution. The definitions, which are used commonly in audits, in respect of competence and reserves and resources, as stated by various regulatory bodies, are compared.

The influence of microwave treatment on copper flotation has been investigated. Comparative batch flotation tests carried out on ore treated at 5?12 kW for 0.1?0.5 s showed that improvements in copper recovery of between 6?15 % could be achieved compared with untreated ore. Both recovery and cumulative grade increased with increasing treatment time and power. A preliminary economic analysis showed that microwave treatment will be economically viable if recoveries similar to those determined on laboratory scale can be achieved on a plant. The present paper provides a brief overview of the thermodynamics of titania rich slags, an outline of the Multi-Phase Equilibrium (MPE) package and its application to ilmenite smelting. Through assessment of published experimental data on various systems containing TiOx, it was found that despite considerable scatter in measured phase equilibria data for the binary Ti2O3-TiO2system,the behaviour of binary and higher order titania rich slags and oxide solid solutions phases could be represented by solution models in the MPE package. Results from the applications of the MPE model on the stability of solid phases and slag-refractory interactions will be presented and discussed. Parallels will be drawn between the predictions by the model and observations made during pilot plant tests. Splashing and wave formation has been studied experimentally by using one-seventh water model of CLU (Creusot-Loire Uddeholm) reactor with two different tuyere configurations by using paraffin and water as simulated slag and simulated metal respectively. Experimental results have been discussed in terms of total splash volume, relative slag volume in splash (dispersed-slag phase holdup in splash), wave frequency and wave amplitude with respect to gas injection rate and tuyere configuration at bath heights between 0.25m and 0.38m. Gas flow rates ranged from 0.00599m3/s to 0.01312 m3/s. The results of splash measurements showed that splash volume increased with increasing gas flow rate and decreasing bath heights for both tuyere arrangements. However, off-centre configuration resulted in relatively higher amounts of splash. The slag volume in splash (Dph in splash) was also found to increase with decreasing bath heights and increasing gas injection rates. The high speed photography revealed that the frequency and wave amplitude increased with gas injection rate. The experimental results also showed that the frequency and vertical displacement of the rotating wave increased when the tuyere orientation became off-centered. This might be used to explain why off-center configuration resulted in generating higher splash volumes than the center configuration.

There are practical indications that flotation recovery of palladium bismuth tellurides is poor. This work tested whether this can be caused by a lack of interaction of the collector with the telluride. Impedance measurements, voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy were performed to determine the interaction of dithiocarbonate collectors (KEX) with Pd-Bi-Te. Impedance measurements showed lower capacitance values in solutions containing KEX, indicating the formation of a continuous surface layer. Anodic and cathodic polarization diagrams show the mixed potential to be higher than the reversible potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen equilibrium reaction; hence the formation of dixanthogen on the surface is possible. Electrochemically controlled in situ Raman spectroscopy did indicate the presence of bulk diethyl dixanthogen on the surface. Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the co-presence of xanthate with dixanthogen, indicating that xanthate retains its molecular integrity when it adsorbs on the surface of the Pd-Bi-Te. As a result, the mineral surface is expected to be hydrophobic and alack of collector interaction with the mineral is not the reason for the low PGM recoveries experienced. Carbothermal reduction of manganese oxides and manganese ores in the solid state was studied in hydrogen, helium and argon at different temperatures, ore compositions and carbon to manganese oxide ratios. Wesselsore (South Africa) and two grades of the Groote Eylandt ore (Australia) with different level of impurities were examined. Ores were characterised by XRD, X-ray fluorescence, optical microscopy and scanning electronmicroscopy. Isothermal and temperature programmed carbothermal reduction experiments were conducted in a fixed bed reactor in a vertical tube furnace, with on-line monitoring of gas composition by the CO-CO2 infrared sensor. The reduced samples were characterised by XRD, SEM and LECO analyses. Extent of reduction was calculated using data on the off-gas composition, and LECO carbon and oxygen contents in the reduced sample. Manganese oxides in the ore were reduced to a-Mn and carbides Mn23C6 and Mn7C3 depending on the carbon to ore ratio. The Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) offers a core first-year engineering design and innovation course, ENGG1000, undertaken during the first and second semesters. This course is highly regarded in the sense that it provides an introduction to many concepts and activities that students will experience over the four-year minimum for which they are undergraduates at UNSW. Approximately 1400 students enrol in the semester 1 course across the Faculty, typically 80 of which undertake the Mining Engineering stream. Students in teams of between six and eight design and construct a physical model to represent an aspect of their chosen discipline. For example, in 2013 the mining engineers designed and built a model dragline. This paper concentrates a major aspect of the course ? the involvement of team members in group activities and the development of the associated skills of peer assessment and peer review as the course progresses over a period of 12 weeks. The term ?peer assessment? in this paper refers to the requirement for students to assess the design components of their peers. This course has a structured requirement in terms of how a successful design is a result of a sound design process rather than a ?try and see? approach. Each student must describe in detail the process they undertook to achieve their final design ? hence the approach is independent of the discipline and/or project selected. Peer review is a process whereby students review the contribution of their team members to the overall design. This activity encourages team involvement and interaction. The final assessment mark can be moderated by the outcome of this peer review, although it is run twice during the semester. The first ?run? is for feedback only during week six and hence no moderation is undertaken. It was found through consultation with students and from questionnaires that both processes are well accepted and highly regarded by students, as they give them a degree of ownership of the assessment process. In addition, the processes provide rapid and relevant feedback on the progress of individual students. Peer review and peer assessment are also considered to be very valuable tools for use in courses in succeeding years. For instance, many of the courses in mining engineering rely heavily on group assessment tasks.
