The semi-autogenous grinding mill is the bottleneck whenever treating hard and finely fragmented ore at Benguet Corporation's Kaline Concentrator. Low milling rates result from very high and fluctuating mill power draw. Attempts to use a mill horsepower control loop to regulate feed rate were unsuccessful because of operational upsets caused by fluctuations in feed rate on downstream operations. The objective of the computer control was to maximize tonnage throughput by stabilizing the power draw at a high but safe level without upsetting subsequent operations. The semi-autogenous mill is operated in closed circuit with a stationary screen. Instrumentation consists of a feed weightometer, a power transmitter to measure mill load, a headwater flowmeter and an ultrasonic level sensor to measure the mill discharge sump level. A 64 k-byte FOX-3 Foxboro computer processes field data from various sensors and manipulates the input control variables. These variables are the fresh feed rate and the headwater flowrate. Feed rate is controlled through a supervisor-type computer program aimed at maximizing and stabilizing power draw. The control scheme was according to how the operators responded during an operator-directed automatic control mode. Mill dilution is similarly controlled. Results achieved reflect a 3% increase in tonnage milled because of the reduction in control variability that ensued.

In this study, the efficacy of Providencia vermicola KUBT-1 in the leaching and beneficiation of Agbaja iron ore was evaluated under varying conditions of temperature, ore particle size, and pH. Agbaja iron ore is a Nigerian low-grade ore containing about 43%–52% iron and a high amount of gangue materials, including phosphorus (1.4%–2.0%) and sulphur (0.12%). The study was organised in triplicate in shake flasks with 48 samples. One millilitre of washed cells of Providencia vermicola KUBT-1 suspended in normal saline at 0.5 McFarland standard (108 cells ml-1) was introduced into each flask containing 50 g of sterilised ore in 100 ml of bioleaching medium, and the samples incubated at room temperature for eight weeks. The levels of upgraded iron, mobilised sulphur, and phosphorus were determined by atomic absorption and ultraviolet spectrophotometric analyses, respectively. Results showed that a particle size of 0.8 mm was optimal for iron upgrading and sulphur mobilisation while 1.0 mm ore size was optimal for phosphorus mobilisation. Up to 89.60% of the iron was upgraded while phosphorus and sulphur were mobilised, leaving residual values of 0.223% and 0.02%, in the ore, respectively. The organism produced best beneficiation results at a pH of 2.5 and a temperature of 3ºC. Correlation analysis with the Pearson’s correlation model showed a positive correlation between iron upgrading and sulphur-phosphorus removal (r =1.000, and r =0.967), respectively. These results present Providencia vermicola KUBT-1 as a promising candidate for large scale leaching and beneficiation of Agbaja iron ore.

In 2015, after amendments to the explosives regulations, stemming became a mandatory activity for all South African mining operations. There are, however, circumstances in which it is thought stemming has an adverse impact on the blasting outcome. Some of these circumstances include blasting in hot holes, in reactive ground, or when blasting a pre-split. In order to determine when stemming is necessary, its role in the control of adverse blasting phenomena and impact on explosive performance were reviewed. Stemming was found to play a significant role in the fragmentation process and burden movement. Additionally, stemming significantly influences the control of flyrock, air-blast, and toxic fume generation. The review of the literature indicates some motivation for not using stemming for presplit, trim, hot hole, and reactive ground blasting, provided the benefits associated with not stemming the holes outweigh the risks of stemming them. Best practice for stemming from the literature indicates a stemming length of 0.7 × burden is best for larger hole diameters, and 20 to 30 × Ø for smaller hole diameters. Crushed aggregate appears to be the most effective stemming material. The South African explosives regulations pertaining to stemming were found to be consistent with those of Australia and the USA.

Surface tension of mold flux is a key factor affecting optimum casting conditions. A thermodynamic model was developed to determine the surface tension of mold flux containing fluoride based on the ion and molecule coexistence theory of slag structure and Butler’s equation. The relationship between composition and surface tension was investigated by this model. Results indicated that the calculated values showed good agreement with literature data, and the average error was 8.19%. The surface tension value of the CaO–Al2O3-based mold flux was larger than that of the CaO– SiO2-based mold flux. The surface tension in a multi-component system decreased with increasing contents of SiO2, CaF2, and Na2O, which are considered surface-active components. This trend was more significant in the CaO–Al2O3-based mold flux.

Hydrocyclones are widely used in wet mineral classification applications and can be notoriously prone to wear. The methods currently used for quantifying hydrocyclone wear profiles are mostly twodimensional. In this paper it was attempted to quantify and monitor wear in three-dimensions, using a micro-CT scanner (Nikon XTH 225 ST). Hydrocyclone wear and, more specifically, spigot wear was investigated on a Multotec HC250 (Dc 250 mm, barrel diameter) hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone is lined by a vulcanised natural rubber compound within a metal shell, with a thermosetting polyurethane spigot and vortex finder. Tests were conducted on the hydrocyclone in a pilot-scale recirculating test setup. The wear rate of the spigot was quantified by measuring the volume change within the spigot over 122 days in operation, using the micro-CT scanner. After 122 days in operation (recirculating feed materials) the wear in the hydrocyclone led to only a 13.67% loss of spigot volume. The relatively low wear rate could be related to the fact that material recirculation led to particle smoothing and a reduction in size, thereby decreasing the wear rate. This also shows the enormous influence that particle shape and size have on wear. The research was conducted with the support of Multotec, NECSA and the University of Pretoria. "The ventilation system of the Pyhasalmi Mine is described. The mine is located in an area where the annual atmospheric temperature may vary from +30°C to -30°C. Natural ventilation causes serious difficulties because the underground mine is connected by drifts and finger raises to the bottom of the 120 m-deep open pit.The natural ventilation tends to make the ventilation net unstable. The paper describes how the instability characteristics of the ventilation net can be studied and how they have been taken into account when automating the control of the ventilation. In addition, the software, hardware and costs of the system are described. The system consists of 12 automated ventilation doors, two mine fans, 8 elements for sensing the air flow and temperatures, a control panel and a process computer."

Jackleg rock drills expose their operators to high hand-arm vibration levels. To address this problem, an antivibration handle has been developed. The antivibration properties of the handle were achieved through a suspension based on a hinge design, achieved with a torsion spring and o-rings. To provide some bench marking for this new handle and to follow the evolution of its performance over time, a test bench was developed to characterize the vibration emission values of jackleg drills under controlled operating conditions. Testing of four antivibration handles on the test bench have shown reductions of the overall weighted acceleration level in the order of 54 % to 60 %, with most of the attenuation occurring in the zh-axis at the rock drill percussion frequency.

Tribo-electrostatic separation is a promising method for effectively utiliing low-grade magnesite resources by removing quartz and improving the grade of magnesite. To determine the chargeto- mass ratios of pure magnesite and quartz, a triboelectric measurement system was employed, and a laboratory tribo-electrostatic separation system was used to separate low-grade magnesite. The results showed that the maximum difference in charge-to-mass ratio between pure magnesite and quartz particles was observed after friction with polyvinyl chloride. The grade and recovery of magnesite increased with temperature and initially increased with increasing voltage, feed rate, and air flowrate before gradually decreasing. The optimal conditions resulted in a concentrate with 46.91% MgO content and 77.36% recovery, while the quartz content decreased from 7.02% to 1.95%. These experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and potential of tribo-electrostatic separation in removing quartz and upgrading magnesite.

A stepwise arrangement of flotation cells is the most common layout of a flotation circuit in the mineral processing industry. In such a design, slurry flows from upstream to downstream by means of gravity, and the middling products are returned to previous stages by pumps. This paper will introduce an alternative solution in which the forced-air and slurry-induced flotation cells are adopted so that all the flotation cells can be placed on the same horizontal platform and no pumps will be needed for middling product transferring. The technology of the forced-air and slurry-induced flotation cell will be described in detail, including unique features, the working principle and the related fundamental problems. The comparison of capital investment, operating cost and metallurgical performance will be made between the conventional stepwise arrangement and the samelevel arrangement technology based on industrial practice. "TiCl4 slurry containing valuable metals is an unavoidable by-product of the titanium ore chlorination process. The recovery of these valuable metals, which include titanium, niobium, tantalum, and aluminum, is an urgent issue to tackle in the titanium industry. The results of this investigation show that the valuable metallic elements can be recovered from the slurry by evaporation in a sealed container and leaching with dilute hydrochloric acid. After evaporation at 200°C for 60 minutes, nearly 99% of the titanium was recovered in the form of TiCl4, which was formed by the reaction of the TiO2 in the slurry with AlCl3. After evaporation, metals like niobium, aluminum, and tantalum remained in the residue. By leaching with 2.1 mol/L HCl at a L/S ratio of 6:1 mL/g at 80°C for 60 minutes, the soluble metals, such as aluminum, iron, and copper were all removed from the residue, and the niobium and tantalum were further enriched in the leach residue. A concentrate containing 53.40 wt% Nb and 5.57 wt% Ta was obtained by washing the leach residue with dilute aqueous ammonia under stirring. A potential waste water purifying agent containing 263.75 g/L AlCl3 was produced by purifying the leaching solution with Al(OH)3 and modified polyacrylamide. IntrodutionTitanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) is an important intermediate in titanium metallurgy that is widely used in the production of titania and titanium sponge (Akhtar, Xiong, and Pratsinis, 1991). In conventional titanium metallurgical processes, high-titanium materials such as synthetic rutile and high-titanium slag are reacted with chlorine to produce TiCl4 in a fluidized-bed furnace. Accompanying elements, such as Al, Nb, and Fe also react with chlorine to form chlorides, which are mixed with gaseous TiCl4 (Anderson, 1917). In the condensation process, gaseous TiCl4 is refrigerated and high-boiling-point chlorides are precipitated in the liquid TiCl4 to form a slurry containing 50~60 wt% TiCl4 (Wang, Xiang, and Wang, 2012).Various methods have been proposed to recover TiCl4 from the slurry, including microwave heating and spray drying (Wang, Xiang, and Wang, 2012, Wang et al., 2010a). To date, the only way to recover the TiCl4 is to return the slurry to the fluidized-bed furnace. However, this causes fluctuations in the temperature in the furnace, resulting in incomplete reaction between titanium-rich materials and chlorine. Therefore, the slurry is often rinsed with water and neutralized by adding lime, which caused serious environmental pollution and wastes a valuable resource (Roy, Bhatt, and Rajagopal, 2003)."

The effects of utilizing recycled tailings pond water from the flotation plant at the Mining Company of Guemassa (MCG) on galena recovery and selectivity towards chalcopyrite (RPb-Cu) , sphalerite (RPb- Zn), and pyrrhotite (RPb-Fe) were studied at bench scale. The results showed that recycling the tailings pond water in the lead circuit without addition of fresh water gave a good flotation performance in terms of lead recovery (Rpb) (75%) and selectivity towards the other metals: RPb-Cu (54%), RPb-Zn (60%) and RPb-Fe(65%). This allows the water to be recycled at least four times. However, increasing the d80 from 100 μm to 160 μm currently used at the MCG plant had a negative effect on the lead flotation performance.

The complex refractory Cu-Pb-Zn polymetallic ore in Xinjiang, China is a massive sulphide ore with complex mineral components. In the past two years, the ore mineralogy has changed, resulting in a decline in metallurgy, with too much zinc reporting to the lead and copper concentrates. A detailed mineralogical study indicating the presence of secondary copper minerals, which could be activating the sphalerite early in the present circuit, was used to develop a novel reagent and flotation flowsheet termed “Pb-Cu co-flotation, Cu intensified flotation, Zn flotation”. It was tested and found to significantly contribute to improving the flotation performance of the ore. In the Pb-Cu co-flotation circuit, successful depression of pyrite and sphalerite was achieved using a BK612- Na2S based depressant system. Most of the galena and some of the Cu bearing minerals with excellent floatability were collected with the use of the selective collector BK906. The rest of Cu bearing minerals were floated in a copper Z200 circuit using a BK537-lime-zinc sulphate based depressant scheme. Zinc flotation from the copper tailing was performed in a SIBX circuit using lime as a pyrite depressant. Using the proposed flowsheet, overall Pb, Cu, and Zn recovery increased significantly to 88%, 87%, and 90% respectively. Fluorination of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) by NH₄HF₂ was investigated using simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), and observing the morphology and phase changes using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicate that fluorination with the involvement of oxygen begins at room temperature, peaks at 178.40C, and is completed at 2000C with the formation of only (NH₄)₃FeF₆. On heating, (NH₄)₃FeF₆ gradually releases NH₄F by the formation of NH₄FeF₄ at 2590C, then (NH₄)0.18FeF₃ at 3270C, and finally FeF₃ with minor FeF₂ at 4000C due to the partial reduction of Fe (III) to Fe (II). At 5500C, FeF₃ is oxidized to FeOF/Fe₂O₃.

Artisanal and small-scale miners in Nigeria struggle to attract formal financing to upgrade their operations to a more sustainable form of small-scale mining operation. Literature shows that for an investment to attract formal sources of financing; the business must be considered creditworthy by potential lenders. This means that the credit risks associated with the investment must be bearable for the potential lender. This study looks at how artisanal and small-scale miners can attract formal funding, which will help them take the leap from artisanal state to a form of sustainable small-scale mining operation. This study evaluates the creditworthiness of artisanal and small-scale mining operators using key credit risk parameters identified in the literature and through primary investigation. A quantitative study is conducted on a sample of 100 artisanal and small-scale miner establishments in Nigeria to evaluate the effect of these identified credit risk parameters on creditworthiness. It is shown in this study that being a member of a mining cooperative society, which is a form of social collateral, best improves the chances of access to formal financing for miners within the sample group. This underpins the role of social collateral, in both the formal and informal economy, and its influence in improving the creditworthiness of a typical artisanal and small-scale miner.

"In low-carbon energy-efficient basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking processes, limestone partly or completely replaces the active lime. The effects of limestone calcination temperature (1200–1500°C) and time (5–15 minutes) on lime reactivity and CaO grain size were investigated. The reactivity was evaluated by titration with hydrochloric acid, and the CaO grain size was analysed using scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed that for calcination temperatures higher than 1300°C, the reactivity reached a maximum and then decreased . The higher the temperature, the earlier the peak of reactivity appears. The CaO grains grow with increasing temperature and time, which leads to the decrease of reactivity. Notably, the effects of temperature on CaO grain size and reactivity are more marked than that of time. To obtain active lime calcined at ultra-high temperature by flash heating, the calcination conditions should be 1300–1400°C for 10–15 minutes, or 1400–1500°C for 8–10 minutes. IntroductionLime is one of the most important slag-making materials for dephosphorization and desulphurization in the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking process. The reactivity of lime is a measure of its capability to take part in slag-making. Lime having a reactivity of more than 300.0 mL (4 N HCl), determined by hydrochloric acid titration is generally referred to as active lime (Rusjan et al., 2007; Zeman, 2008). At present, the active lime used for BOF processes comes primarily from a kiln or shaft kiln, where limestone is preheated at 700– 900°C, and then calcined at 1050–1200°C (Drenhaus et al., 2010; Oates, 2007)."

A principal requirement in the design of a backfill transportation pipeline is the accurate prediction of the values of key slurry flow parameters. Input variables, such as particle size and solids concentration, are usually determined by the load-bearing requirements of the placed fill. It is therefore necessary to identify the optimum conditions of transport for a particular combination of input variables. This paper critically reviews the methods available to predict the values of flow parameters in slurry pipeline systems in the light of experimental data generated at a test facility. Particular reference is made to rod milled waste and deslimed tailings transport systems and, in the case of the former, it is shown that both pumping and load-bearing requirements can be optimized.

Rotary kilns are used for a variety of mineral processing operations. Hatch makes use of a kiln model developed from first principles to evaluate designs for its clients. This tool has been applied to a variety of pyrometallurgical applications. This paper illustrates the application of numerical optimization techniques in combination with the kiln model in the interrogation of a generic iron-ore reduction process. The fundamental modelling concepts are explained, followed by a description of the optimization approach. The results show how the combination of the two methods, with modern computing power, can generate a large number of viable design and operating candidates.

"The South African ferrochrome industry has been faced with various challenges during the past few years, such as influences from the market, manpower strikes, China’s control over the demand for both ferrochrome and chrome ore from South Africa, and electricity supply constraints, placing increased pressure on the local industry to improve output in order to remain globally competitive. The year 2016 brought a dramatic change in the local ferrochrome industry, being marked by higher chrome ore prices and the takeover of some idle smelters.This study investigates the methods of technology acquisition used in various parts of the ferrochrome smelter value chain throughout a business cycle, and whether there is a preference for a specific acquisition in an explicit part of the value chain. The study also considers whether companies prefer to partner with local or global institutions for collaborative development, and the methods used by companies to protect their technologies.IntroductionSouth Africa holds the world’s largest chrome ore reserves and was the world’s largest producer of ferrochrome until 2012, when China became the leading ferrochromeproducing country. South Africa’s chrome ore (chromite) supply into the Chinese market has risen significantly from 36% of China’s total chrome ore imports in 2010 to more than 70% in 2016 (Fowkes, 2014; Creamer, 2017). China controls the demand for both ferrochrome and chrome ore from South Africa (Fowkes, 2014). China’s high import rate of chrome ore has resulted in ferrochrome prices being driven down and a depressed ferrochrome market. The South African industry meets the chrome ore demands but loses out on ferrochrome beneficiation.Furthermore, the local ferrochrome industry has been threatened with the overall poor competitiveness over the past few years, resulting in four of the eight producers ceasing operations at the beginning of 2016. Challenges experienced by the producers, some of which are directly linked to production costs, include influences from the market, productivity that was affected by wildcat strikes, China’s control over the demand for both ferrochrome and chrome ore, and electricity supply issues (Fowkes, 2014, 2013; Biermann, Cromarty, and Dawson, 2012). Ferrochrome production is energy-intensive and South African producers have faced higher electricity costs, electricity supply complications, and a weaker currency exchange rate since 2009."

It is well known that the ability to influence project value reduces significantly as planning progresses and decisions regarding project parameters are made. However, at the prefeasibility stage in particular, where one of the main aims should be to evaluate a wide range of options in order to select the best for more detailed further study, there is often a reluctance to spend the time and money needed to do this rigorously. This paper demonstrates, by a number of case study examples, how significant increases in value may be obtained by fully evaluating the combinations of alternatives for various project design parameters, including (though not limited to) mining methods, haulage methods, mining rates, processing methods and rates, sequencing of mining, and cut-off grades, with changes and upgrades over time where applicable. The additional value unlocked is typically orders of magnitude greater than the additional cost of the more comprehensive study. The dangers of misuse of simplistic sensitivity analyses and failure to identify how strategies might change in response to changes in external factors are also illustrated, and the importance of selecting the best `grade descriptor' is discussed.
