This circular has been prepared for the guidance of safety engineers, shot firers, and coal-mine inspectors concerning multiple blasting with short-delay (millisecond-delay) detonators. These special precautions are suggested in addition to those normally followed in blasting, as outlined in the Federal Mine Safety Codes 5 6/ and in Miners' Circular 58.7/ INTRODUCTION The use of short-delay blasting has been proposed for promoting safety and increasing the rate of production in coal mining. Ideally, short-delay blasting, as compared with equivalent single-shot blasting, reduces exposure of the shot firer to dust, fumes, and weakened roof; as compared with equivalent simultaneous blasting, it reduces roof disturbance.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), with US Foam Technologies, Inc. and On Site Gas Systems, Inc., conducted research on the remote application of extinguishing agents with the intent of improving deployment strategies to limit miner exposure and to help ensure the best possible outcome during a mine fire. Full-scale in-mine were conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to determine the flow characteristics, stability and fire-suppression capability of gas-enhanced foam. The in-mine experimental work was designed to evaluate movement of gas-enhanced foam through mine workings closely simulating an underground coal mine environment and how long gas-enhanced foam would remain stable. This paper presents results of the experiments and provides valuable insight into mine fire deployment strategies for gas-enhanced foam technology.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted benchmarking surveys at longwall operations across the country to identify current operating practices and the types of controls being used. Gravimetric and instantaneous dust sampling was completed to quantify dust generation from major sources and determine the relative effectiveness of the different control technologies. Results from the underground dust surveys will be presented as an update on longwall dust control technology and operating practices.

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Information organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7. 1882 (22 Stat. 829) to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Minerals Information activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

Helium shipments for 1965 exceeded the volume shipped during the previous year for the 16th successive time. Shipments from Bureau of Mines helium plants were 698.6 million cubic feet, 2 about 4.7 percent more than in 1964. Production at Bureau of Mines plants totaled 757.4 million cubic feet, and an additional 3,549.6 million cubic feet was produced by private companies participating in the helium conservation program and purchased by the Bureau of Mines and stored underground for future use. The Bureau of Mines continued to sell helium at $35 per thousand cubic feet, the price established in 1961. Production and sales of helium increased from the one private plant operating entirely outside the Government's helium program. A second private plant was virtually complete at yearend, although actual production had not commenced.

An experiment is described in which hollow inclusion cells (HICells) were used to measure stress in a jointed rock mass during drift development at the Stillwater Mine, Nye, MT, USA. Two HICells were installed in the footwall approximately two drift widths ahead of the face. One HICell was over cored and then immediately tested in a biaxial chamber. The other HICell was left in place and monitored as the drift was excavated in three advances, each one-half the width of the drift. Strains were recorded hourly by a datalogger. Results show that there was little stress change during the first and second drift advances, but that a large stress change occurred after the third advance. The measurements also showed that the in situ principal stress directions lined up with regional geologic structures. Stress changes during face advance were likely caused by deformation along localized joint sets and inelastic deformation near the face.

The Rickard mine in York County, S. C., named for the original owner, Alexander Rickard, was operated about 50 years as. No records are available of the quantity of corundum shipped. Pratt states, "Many tons were picked up from the surface and shipped." The mine was visited on August 6, 1943, by the author, accompanied by Gilbert W. Withers of Atlanta, Ga. Investigation of the property was begun by the Bureau of Mines after some initial work by the Mi-Cor Corp., a company organized by Gilbert P. Withers of Atlanta to explore the property. In conducting the Bureau program, 754 linear feet of trenches were dug, 110 feet of old drifts cleaned out and examined, and 38 feet of shaft retimbered.

"INTRODUCTION Uncontrolled mine fires originating in exposed coal beds through the acts of careless or irresponsible persons present a serious threat to buildings, surface property, and the life and health of persons near the affected area. Apparently, the seriousness of such fires is not fully understood by property owners or those residing in the vicinity, as practically nothing has been done to alleviate conditions. In many instances, such fires have been active for several years before property owners or civic organizations have shown any interest toward having the fire extinguished. Recommendations by Bureau of Mines investigators in the interest of controlling such fires are seldom followed, as the Bureau cannot provide the funds for doing the work.Several uncontrolled and widespread fires are burning along the outcrop of coal beds and in underground abandoned mine workings within a 25-mile radius of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pa. If these fires are permitted to continue to burn unabated, the ultimate results may be far-reaching. Most of the outcrop fires investigated are believed to have originated from burning rubbish, forest fires, or workmen, hunters, or others building fires near the outcrop of ,the coal beds. In other instances, smoke and fumes have suddenly appeared in the vicinity of abandoned coal-mine openings, indicating that a fire has either burned its way along the outcrop of the coal bed or has traveled through the abandoned mine from another location. An underground or outcrop coal-mine fire will be very likely to continue to burn as long as an oxygen supply is present.; and, so far as is known, such fires do not stop burning automatically until virtually all combustible matter is consumed."

Reduce dust on long wall faces by using a gob curtain to lower air leakage Into the gob and raise the airflow along the face. Approach A brattice curtain (gob curtain) Is hung between shield #1 and the rib in the headgate entry forcing the ventilating air stream to make the 90° turn and stay on the face side of the shields rather than leaking into the gob. How It Works Air leakage is greatest in the headgate area because the gob behind the first few shields remains open due to the roof bolts in the headgate entry. In addition to the open gob, there is a large gap between shield #1 and the rib. Prevention of air leakage behind the shields is accomplished by the Installation of a curtain between the first shield and the rib extending from the roof to the bottom. The curtain Is advanced with the shield line each pass and is helpful In maintaining a sufficient air quantity along the face. The biggest Improvement due to this curtain is seen in the first 25-30 shields where the Increased air volume lowers dust concentrations through dilution.

"Natural gas-gasoline is made by collecting in the liquid state the condensable hydrocarbon vapors that exist in different natural gases in varying amounts. In the richer type of natural gas the gasoline is generally recovered by compression and cooling. If exceedingly high pressure or low temperature is used, there is dissolved in the gasoline a large amount of very volatile material, which evaporates rapidly at atmospheric temperature and pressure.In the leaner type of natural gas, the gasoline vapors are selectively absorbed from the permanent gases by passing the natural gas through an absorbing oil. The gasoline is recovered by distilling the saturated oil, and as compared with ""compression"" gasoline is of high Baume' gravity and low vapor pressure. Before a volatile gasoline can be transported in tank cars, it is necessary to decrease its volatility in order to lessen the risk of fire or explosion, as well as to prevent excessive evaporation in transit. This can be accomplished either by weathering the gasoline, or by blending it with a more stable material, naphtha being commonly used in the weathering process the more volatile portions of the gasoline are allowed to evaporate and the losses in volume are very large, therefore, blending is preferable, wherever possible.It is very difficult, however, to produce by blending, in gasoline plants, a motor fuel which is equal to straight-run refinery gasoline. In order to make a blended motor fuel of a grade equal to straight-run gasoline, only a small percentage of natural gas-gasoline can be blended with the naphtha, consequently it is customary to blend the gasoline with only enough naphtha to enable It to be shipped to an oil refinery when the material is again blended to form a finished motor fuel."

Provide a coalbed methane data source for industry use in mine planning. Approach Coalbed methane data have keen collected and formatted into a computer implemented data base with software developed for storage, retrieval, and generating files of selected data in response to information requests and for statistical analysis of relationships among various coal parameters. How It Works Coalbed methane data is obtained by the Bureau's direct method test on exploration coal cores. The test involves sealing fresh coal cores in desorption canisters and periodically bleeding the gas into a water-filled, graduated cylinder to measure the volume of gas released. Coalbed methane data collected over the past 9 years have been entered into a computer-implemented data base for efficient retrieval and statistical analysis. Data base processing is accomplished with a commercially available storage, sorting, retrieval, and report writing software package (Datatrieve 11). Information requests from the coal industry are processed with the system, and the data in the desired output format am printed and forwarded to the requestor. Information such as coalbed name, location (state and county), depth of sample, gas content, and coal rank are available from the system. The data can be used for

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale explosion experiments, to evaluate the strength characteristics of various seal designs, used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests conducted within the multiple entry section of PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) is currently the only accepted test method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), for deeming a seal design suitable for use in American mines. These explosion tests are labour intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. The PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept that can facilitate the in situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within PRL's Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from these chamber tests compare favourably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the chamber test approach also allows for the determination of the seal's ultimate design strength. Six-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of seal designs as a function of entry size are also presented.

"INTRODUCTION The most productive area of the eastern Virginia pyrite belt lies to the north of the village of Mineral., in Louisa County. The largest producers of pyrite ore in the area were the Armenius, Boyd Smith, and the Sulphur mines.The Boyd Smith mine started production about 1890 and operated more or less continuously until 1922, when competition from the Gulf States and Spain closed the pyrite mines in Virginia. There are no reliable records of production or value of minerals produced.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the most effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they take the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The heats of solution of erbium chloride in water and in hydrochloric acid and of erbium oxide in hydrochloric acid were determined. The results reveal a discrepancy of 10.5 kcal. per gram-atom between the heats of combustion and solution of erbium reported in the literature, the heat of combustion being more negative. The heat of combustion of erbium t4)4 and its heat of solution in hydrochloric acid (1, 18) have been reported in the literature. The heat of solution of erbium chloride was determined in two studies (2, 19). The present work was undertaken to check the reported heats of solution of erbium chloride and to determine the heat of solution of erbium oxide in hydrochloric acid. The latter quantity permits the heats of combustion and solution of erbium to be compared for mutual consistency. It was also desired to determine the degree of similarity between the thermochemistry of yttrium and erbium.

Data or input files are used to describe the mine's ventilation system and physical characteristics necessary for ventilation calculations as well as the physical or mechanical disturbance to be modeled and simulated Data files are organized into lines of categories or groups of information Each line contains multiple sets of information or data items Data lines are read by the program, and the data items provide information to the program variables The data file is in American Standard Code for Informa¬tion Interchange (ASCII) format, sometimes called a DOS text format Creation or modification of a data file is accomplished with text editor software Most word pro¬cessors are also capable of making the required ASCII type files A sample data file and its associated output are included in appendix B. When selecting software for editing the data files, the user should be aware that the software will also be used for viewing the output of the simulation The output file can be quite large (several megabytes), if a lengthy simulation is performed The output can be sent to a printer for a hardcopy fisting, however, the user should also be aware that most printers currently used with PC's print at rates of 100 to 300 characters per second and large output files may take several hours to print Viewing the output with a text editor can save much time and paper DATA FILE MANAGEMENT The data files describing the event and mine to be simulated can reside either on a floppy disk or in a directory on the hard disk drive When the program starts, the user is prompted for the data file location and name The user response is in the form of a standard DOS path and file name For example, if the data file is on a floppy disk located in drive B and the disk has a directory MYMINE with the data file MYDATA DAT in that directory, then, at the prompt

To concentrate coarse mica particles using a dry beneficiation technique. Approach Concentrate coarse, II berated mica particles using a Bureau-designed system of crushers, screens, and a two-stage zigzag air classifier. How It Works Because mica has a flat plate-like crystalline structure, mica particles are significantly lighter than blocky gangue particles of the same size fraction. Thus an air classification technique can separate the flat, light mica particles from the heavier gangue particles. The ore, which Is first run through a standard jaw crusher, a roll crusher, and a hammer mill to liberate the mica, enters the rougher Zig-zag section through a rotating air lock. See photograph and diagram of a 2-stage air classifier. Airflow through the classifier can be varied according to the size of the particles being separated. The gangue material falls through the airstream of the rougher zigzag section and is discarded as tailings. The mica flakes are carried by the air-stream to the cyclone shown on the right side of the diagram, where they are collected. This rougher mica concentrate is fed to the cleaner zigzag section through another rotating air lock. The mica particles are again carried by the airstream but they are now collected In the cyclone on the left side. The cleaner concentrate leaves the left-side cyclone through a third rotating air lock and is rescreened to remove under-size material missed by the first screening. The final product of this pneumatic process is generally a high-grade mica concentrate. A generalized flow diagram for the pneumatic concentration method Is shown In the second diagram.

"The Anhydrite ProblemThe Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment station of the Bureau of Mines at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N. J. has recently undertaken a study of the chemical and physical properties of anhydrite having in view its wider utilization anhydrite (CaSO4) in contact with water at ordinary temperature and pressure rehydrates, slowly forming gypsum (CaSO4.2H42O). In nature this is an extremely slow process, and laboratory experiments are being conducted to determine methods of accelerating the rehydration. The tests recorded herein cover one this study, and while they are negative in character in so far as the major problem is concerned, certain facts established by the tests, bearing on the stability relations of gypsum and anhydrite seem sufficiently important to be placed on record.Early Researches on Gypsum and Anhydrite.It is to Lavoisiar that we are the first scientific study of the calculation and hardening of plaster of Paris. He sums up his experiments in the following passage: ""If gypsum, which has been deprived of its water of by means of heat, is again treated with water (to make what is commonly called mortar) it takes it up with avidity, rapid and irregular crystallization occurs, and the small crystals which are formed are so entangled in each other that a very hard mass results."" Later, he observed that the dehydration of gypsum occurs in two stages: three-fourths of the combined water is much more easily driven out than the last fourth. LeChatalier first determined the temperature decomposition accurately, his method was as follows: Pulverized gypsum was placed in a glass tube in the middle of a paraffin bath, the temperature of which was raised in a progressive and regular manner. A thermometer gave at each instant the temperature the salt, and the passage of the mercury column past each division of —co. was cared by a registering chronograph. The rise in temperature was except at 128°C. and 168°C. where breaks occurred."

Laboratory mineral-dressing investigations were conducted on talc-bearing samples from Arkansas and Texas under the Bureau of Mines program of examinations and surveys, which is concerned, in part, with the improvement of conservation and utilization of domestic mineral resources. Two of the soapstones in question were successfully upgraded by flotation, utilizing stage additions of a frother and an amine to promote their talc content. The process could enable the producers to meet more rigid specifications of higher priced talc commodities. INTRODUCTION Talc is an industrial mineral with distinctive properties, such as softness, smoothness, large surface area in relation to mass, chemical inertness, and good retention as a filler, that make it particularly valuable to a number of industries. Sales to 6 industries -ceramics, paint, insecticide, rubber, roofing, and paper -consumed 84 percent of the domestic production of talc, pyrophyllite, and ground soapstone in 1952. Mine production in that year totaled 600,908 tons. Sales of crude and ground material were 593,147 tons valued at $11,347,317.2/

Communication problems are not new. Research in this area goes back as far as 7922 when the US Bureau of Mines performed experiments to detect radio signals from inside their experimental mine in Bruceton, Pennsylvania. Many improvements to mine communications have been made over the years but for any number of reasons the underground coal mining industry has been behind in implementing advances. Present communications systems far underground mines can be hard-wired or wireless. Both types of systems can fail when faced with fires, roof falls, explosions, and power or battery failure. Currently installed wireless communications systems usually employ a special antenna cable called a "leaky feeder" Fiber optic cables are also used in some applications to form a "backbone" for wireless transceivers. Through-the-earth (TTE) and wireless radio systems are less common. Except for TTE systems, most wireless systems require some wire-bound components, which are susceptible to failure during disasters as cable breakage interrupts communications.
