This Bureau of Mines study surveys the current state of technology and the various research efforts that have been undertaken to dewater the dilute phosphatic clays generated in the production of phosphate rock. The research described includes early dewatering experiments, fundamental studies of clays and of flocculation, and minor dewatering techniques such as freeze-thaw methods, the ANDCO process, moving screens, sand wick, crust development, and overburden pumping. Some methods that are currently being evaluated are described. They include the Estech sand-clay mix process using the Enviro-Clear thickener, sand-clay sandwiching, dredge mix, dredge process, and the sand-spray process. Developing technology for dewatering phosphatic clays also is described, including the Bureau of Mines rotary trommel method and the Gardinier process.

A statistical analysis of silver assay data from rotary-drill-hole cut-tings and diamond-drill-hole cores from the Round Mountain prospect, Custer County, Colo., demonstrates several useful methods for estimating grades and tonnages of ore from the drilling of wide-spaced holes in disseminated deposits of precious metals. A new method of are appraisal is introduced which estimates grade and tonnage of are by calculating convex hulls (smallest convex polygons) for sample points with assay values above specified cutoff grades. Analyses of variance compare the consistency of data from rotary-and diamond-drill holes, from rotary-drill holes sampled at 2-and 4-foot intervals, from two methods of sample preparation, and from atomic-absorption and fire assaying. Evidently, data from the two types of drill holes, from holes sampled at the two intervals, and from different methods of preparation are in agreement. Atomic-absorption silver values are consistently lower than fire-assay silver values.

Slope failure accidents were responsible for about 12% of U.S. surface mine fatalities between 1995 and 2003. Small surface movements on a mine highwall may be precursors of failure that, if detected, could provide sufficient warning to enable workers and machinery to be withdrawn to safety. Radar interferometry offers the necessary precision to detect these movements. Radar has some advantages over other methods in its ability to cover large surface areas for true two-dimensional monitoring day and night under almost any weather condition. Radar’s active transmit/receive mode of operation provides for more direct sampling than do passive optical methods that depend on solar illumination. Improvements in microprocessor speeds and capacities have led to the development of a number of small, portable, ground-based systems; such systems are now being deployed at several locations around the world. As part of an ongoing study of monitoring technologies, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Brigham Young University, Provo, UT, cooperated to assess the feasibility of using interferometric radar to monitor mine slope stability. Field tests of a device incorporating prototype equipment were successful in that small, centimeter-scale displacements on rock slopes were detected.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Robena No. 4, located near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief tine periods. With present instrumentation, the spectrum can be covered from 40 Hz to 400 kHz. It is recorded using broad-band analog magnetic tape, and the noise data are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise envelopes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of tine to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots. The general results are that at frequencies below 10 kHz, power line noise within the mine is severe. Impulsive noise is severe near arcing trolleys, and at lower frequencies near any transmission line. Carrier trolley phone signals and harmonics are strong throughout the mine whenever the trolley phone is in operation. Additional information beyond that included in this report may be obtained from the authors, who are with the Electromagnetics Division of the National Bureau of Standards.

From the chemist's point of view it would be ideal if specifications for coke for any stated purpose could be written on the basis of chemical composition and burning characteristics. Unfortunately this is not possible. In fact, the physical properties of a coke are often of such major importance as to render any specified chemical requirements totally inadequate to show the quality of coke desired. For example, a furnace coke may admirably fill all chemical requirements, such as for low phosphorus, sulphur, moisture, and high fixed carbon, and still be too soft to support the burden of the furnace without excessive crushing. Again, a domestic coke though a good fuel as judged from Chemical analysis, may be of unmarketable size. Thus one can not define the quality of a coke for a specified purpose without taking into account both its chemical and physical characteristics even when this has been done the specification may fail because neither coke user nor producer can accurately define by quantitative tests the qualities most desired. In other words, there is need of accurate test methods for measuring the properties of coke and, what is equally important, for correlating the results with the behavior of the coke in use. Coke quality is determined by the kind of coal used, the coking process, and the type of equipment used in the coking process. Chemical analysis of the coals, together with small-scale coking tests, will give a good indication of their suitability; but, in general, coke must be produced on an industrial scale and tested in the equipment for which it is intended before conclusive information as to its quality is obtained.

Modern mechanized mining with high-speed machines, multiple-entry systems, multiple blasting, high-velocity air currents, and rapid haulage has brought many economic benefits and has on the whole enhanced safety in the coal-mining industry. It has, however, also introduced some added hazards, the control of which requires concerted effort and ingenuity. Mechanized mining has greatly increased the production and dissemination of fine coal seam or in mine entries. Use of high-speed machines has increased the probability of formation of incendive sparks, which are produced by frictional contact between moving metals and certain mineral substances in the coal seam or in the adjoining rock strata. In gassy seams rapid extraction of coal has increased the rate of gas evolution. These facts have made more urgent the need of preventing the ignition of coal dust and the development of widespread mine explosions. The ignition hazard can be controlled best by eliminating all potential igniting sources and by careful attention to ventilation designed to prevent accumulation of gas capable of triggering a coal-dust explosion. Frictional spark ignition by mining machines and suggested safeguards are discussed in a recent publication. Extensive research and long experience have shown conclusively that the propagation of coal-dust flames can be arrested and the development of widespread explosions prevented by properly applied, generalized rock dusting.

The Bureau of Mines as part of its research effort to minimize the generation of hydrometallurgical waste, investigated a sodium sulfide leaching-electrolysis procedure for treating hydrometallurgical residues for elemental sulfur and base-metals recovery. Research was conducted on a leaching residue from a lead concentrate. The following procedure was developed. 1. The elemental sulfur was dissolved as polysulfide with an Na2S solution. 2. The resultant metal sulfide bearing residue was oxidatively acid leached in a cationic membrane electrolysis cell; the metals were solu¬bilized at the anode, and a base was generated at the cathode. 3. The elemental sulfur was recovered from the polysulfide solution by neutralizing with the acid in the anolyte. Byproducts of the neutralization were H2S and a sodium salt solution. 4. Sodium sulfide was regenerated by reacting the H2S byproduct with the base in the catholyte. 5. Lead as PbCL2 was recovered from the anode residue by brine leaching, and the other metals were recovered from the sodium salt solution as metal sulfides. 6. The barren filtrate from the metal sulfide precipitation constituted the recycled electrolyte. Ninety-eight percent of the elemental sulfur, 98 pct of the lead, and up to 80 pct of other accessory metals were recovered from a residue obtained from the FeCl3-NaCl leaching of a lead concentrate.

In August 1984 the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study of the mineral resource development potential of the Badger Canyon-Antelope Creek area, within the Boulder-Pioneer wilderness study area, about 5 miles northeast of Ketchum, 10. The purpose of this study was to investigate in greater detail an area which was designated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Bureau as having a moderate mineral resource potential for zinc, molybdenum, lead, and silver, and a low potential for copper. One hundred twenty-eight soil samples were taken along a 6,2S0-ft traverse on the ridge separating Badger Canyon and Antelope Creek. 5 Five rock samples were collected from old prospect pits and mineralized outcrops. All samples were analyzed for gold. Silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, arsenic, antimony, vanadium, and mercury. The metal concentrations in the soil samples along the traverse are irregularly distributed. Samples collected near old prospect pits tend to be high in lead and zinc, undoubtedly a reflection of underlying galena-and sphalerite-bearing quartz veins. All of the copper and mercury values in the soils are less than the detection limit, as are most of the lead, molybdenum, and antimony values. Except for lead and zinc values, the metal concentrations in the rock samples are low. Galena and sphalerite were observed in quartz vein samples collected at the old prospects. The results of the study indicate that the galena-sphalerite-bearing quartz veins and veinlets are too narrow, widely-spaced, and low in metal values to be economic. Low concentrations of metals in the soil and rock samples, combined with the lack of major mining activity in the past, indicate that the area has a low likelihood for economic development.

Gas drainage through surface bore-holes has been the conventional means of methane control for U.S. longwall gobs. However, these vertical boreholes are becoming so costly, and the surface rights so difficult to obtain, that the Bureau of Mines is developing underground gob gas drainage as an alternate means of methane control for U.S. longwalls. Holes are drilled into the roof over the panel and on retreating longwalls, towards the working face from a location inby the face. As the longwall retreats, an increasing portion of the hole intercepts the fracture system over the caved gob. A surface exhauster maintains a vacuum on a pipeline parelleling the panel and draws the methane mixture out of the mine. Auxiliary systems of gob gas drain-age during longwall mining will be essential for an increasing number of coal mines. Deep and gassy mines often find ventilation insufficient for adequate dilution of methane in bleeder entries. Although this cross-measure method of degasification has been used successfully in Europe, some of the European techniques cannot be directly applied to U.S. mines. This is the first study of its kind in this country.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of this circular is to correlate the information obtained during personal investigations at the sites of four rock tunnels in the process of construction and information obtained from the records and personal views of the constructors of two other tunnels that were not visited during the, excavation phase of construction and to present this information for the benefit of those who contemplate future construction of rock tunnels.Modern mechanized coal mining requires better, safer, properly alined haulageways and beltways; consequently, better understanding of tunneling methods by coal-mining men will be necessary. The possibility of future high-speed haulage systems utilizing rock tunnels in the more solid rock strata above or below the coal beds must not be discounted. In the past, tunnels have been driven for use in draining and unwatering inundated coal mines. At present, the need for such tunnels is very evident in some parts of the coal-mining regions, notably in the Pennsylvania anthracite fields, and studies along these lines are in progress. The average coal-mining man has little time or opportunity to visit tunnels while they are being exca-vated; therefore, it is hoped that this information will assist him in constructing tunnels safely if he is required to do so in the future.The tunnels described herein differ in size, shape, usage, and, in many instances, in their geological aspects. Full-face, heading and bench, and pilot-tunnel, and enlargement methods of excavation were utilized.The roof-support methods show diverse designs and materials of construction to suit each purpose and condition. The superiority of steel roof support over wood is demonstrated beyond doubt and is shown clearly in the photographs included in this circular.The illustrations (photographs taken by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Corps of Engineers, and others) show many of the necessary steps taken during the excavation and the erection of roof support in tunnels under construction."

This Bureau of Mines publication describes several fault locators and methods, including time domain reflectometers, a frequency domain reflectometer, tone generators, an infrared method, the Murray loop method, and high-voltage "click" methods. The Bureau of Mines has been conducting research into these methods for several years, to improve mine safety and facilitate production through rapid, safe location of trailing-cable faults. The problems encountered in practical applications are discussed, and schematic diagrams of several instruments fabricated by the Bureau are presented. Since no present single method of locating trailing-cable faults is universally applicable, a kit composed of several of the more promising fault locators is advisable.

An electrochemical process was developed for the preparation of vanadium from vanadium carbide. Commercially available vanadium carbide (V2C) was used as the starting material. Vanadium was obtained by electrolysis of the V2C in a BaCl2-KCl-NaCI-VCl2 electrolyte at 670° C using a helium-atmosphere, molten-salt electrolytic cell. Vanadium products were recovered with purities high as 99.6 percent. Current efficiencies of 87 percent and vanadium recoveries of 84 percent were attained. The cathode products were amenable to electrorefining to high-purity vanadium of 99.96-percent purity.

The Bureau of Mines used mathematical reliability theory to define, for use in the mining industry, the concepts of risk, safety, reliability, hazard, and mean time between accidents. In this report, the definitions are explained theoretically and illustrated by application to actual underground mine accident data extending over a 9-1/2-year period. The theoretical development proceeds along two parallel analytical paths. For each line of reasoning, the data are presumed to be independent. If they are not, the analysis stops, although there are interesting implications when dependency is demonstrated. The first method uses the elapsed times between accidents as the basic data. These elapsed times are fitted to a negative exponential distribution function using least squares and yielding the function parameter, P1 The P1 is used to form the Poisson distribution function for the data, which is then used to define the safety-related concepts. The second method uses the maximum likelihood estimator to formulate a Poisson distribution function for the data. The function is tested for adequacy by a goodness-of-fit test; if the fit is acceptable, the Poison function is used to define the concepts. Both methods were applied to the data base, yielding nearly identical results.

Coal mines comprised 13.7% of all mining operations. • Bituminous mines comprised 92.5% (n = 1,825) and anthracite mines 7.5% (n = 147) of coal mining operations. • More than 70% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (29.0%), West Virginia (20.9%), and Pennsylvania (20.2%). • Bituminous coal mines reported the production of over 1 billion coal tons.

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract No. H0178069. The purpose of this project was to enhance the Bureau of Mine's Cableless Electronic Survey System use to aid in the drilling of long (approx. 2000 feet) boreholes in coal. This drilling is performed as part of the methane drainage program. The system that was ultimately developed was field tested and demonstrated in actual in-mine drilling activities. The significance of this system as compared to previous drill survey systems is the fact that it surveys without having to be inserted and removed for each survey point. It is so designed that it can withstand the shock and vibration experience by the drill string during drilling. This means an increased productivity is now possible in that drill operators can determine drill bit positioning in a near real-time environment.

Three types of communication systems have become popular in solving communication requirements underground: Loud-speaking pager phones, carrier current phones, and magneto ringing phones. Basically, all three are simply single-channel party line systems. Although these systems are quite reliable, the single channel creates a variety of problems. For example- 1. Since no call is confidential, messages are sometimes purposely made vague, especially if accidents or safety topics are being discussed. 2. A potential user must literally "wait in line" until the channel becomes clear for his use; thus, when foremen have to wait to call in reports or supply requests, this single chan-nel creates a serious productivity bottleneck. 3. In many large mines, there are independent branch lines that must be tied together by a dispatcher, adding further delays to the system. To solve these problems, some mines have installed other phone systems-mostly commercial dial phones in industrial enclosures that offer extra channel capacity and private line features. Others have installed a system that combines both dial- and page-phone features in a single unit. Although these do represent improvements, they do not truly solve the overall problems that face modern mines. Besides extra channels, a communication system should have the following features to enhance productivity and safety: 1. A means of paging a roving miner to alert him that he is wanted on the phone. 2. Wireless-to-wired system interconnects by which a miner can talk on the wired phone system by using a remote portable radio. 3. Remote monitors that alert personnel when there is a toxic or explosive gas buildup. 4. Control interfaces that allow remote control of fans, pumps, or other devices. 5. Transmitters and receivers that can serve as emergency links. 6. Loopback that allows an alternate path of communications if the main path is cut. This chapter focuses on equipment and methods to meet the special communication needs of individuals in various places of the underground mine. The communication requirements can be broken down into four categories: 1. The mine entrance (shaft communication). 2. Permanent and semipermanent locations (shop areas, lunchroom, crusher stations, etc.). 3. Mining areas (the room-and-pillar sections, longwall faces, block caving areas, etc.). 4. Haulageways (tracked trolley haulage, diesel, belt haulage). Methods of implementing systems to meet the communication needs of these areas are described in sections 3.2 through 3.5. Section 3.6 discusses methods of satisfying special communication requirements that exist. Major topics in this category include communications with roving personnel, the isolated miner, and motorman-to-snapper communications. OUTPUT of carbon black in 1959 increased in all producing States except New Mexico. The national increase was 20 percent. Domestic sales and exports increased 22 percent and 16 percent, respectively, resulting in a 21 percent gain in sales. Sales to the rubber industry, which purchased 95 percent of the domestic output of carbon black, increased 23 percent. Sales to all other major consumers also increased. "INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYNowata County, in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, is one of the principal oil-producing counties of this stripper area. Many fields in the county were opened and much oil was produced before statehood. The location of the major fields, as defined by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, 2/ the outline of the areas of water-flooding activity, and the location of the several projects described in detail in this report are shown in figure 1.There was some drilling in the county earlier; but it was not until after 1904, when the Secretary of the Interior confirmed as valid the leases granted by the Cherokee Nation, that the major drilling activity began. Initial development in this part of Oklahoma was in the Chelsea field in Rogers County, which adjoins Novata County on the south. The activity spread rapidly northward to the Alluwe and Coody's Bluff fields, and then to the Nowata-Claggett field. Continued exploration resulted in discovery of the Delaware-Childers field, where some wells having an initial production of 1,000 barrels daily were completed. Fields discovered and developed during the next few years included the Lenepah (Elliott), Adair, California Creek, Curl Creek, Woody, and South Coffeyville. The oil-production history of Nowata County is shown in figure 2. In assembling the data for a production curve, it was found that the combined production records for Nowata and Rogers Counties were available for 1914 to 1951, inclusive, and that records for the individual counties were available only from 1926 to 1951, inclusive. The early production figures for the counties from 1905 to 1914, inclusive, except for 1909, were calculated from the initial production statistics of the Federal Geological Survey mineral resources bulletins and production data assembled by C. H. Beal. 3/ The production values for 1905 to 1926 for Nowata County were obtained by dividing the total production for the two counties by a percentage factor derived from known facts regarding the oil industry in the area. Production figures for the individual counties from 1926 to 1933, inclusive, were obtained from the files of the Oil and Gas Journal, and the figures from 1933 through 1951 were obtained from monthly reports of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission."

Hydraulic backfill consisting of siliceous mill tailings was successfully dewatered and consolidated by electrokinetics in a field test conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the Star mine, Burke, Idaho. A stope at the 2,000-foot level was filled in such a way that slimes and coarse sand were retained in the scope. Following settlement of solids and decant of surface water, direct current applied between buried electrodes created a firm, dense material in approximately 3 hours. This rapid densification of fine-grained material demonstrated the utility of this method and suggests other applications, particularly in the control of slime deposits that cause serious problems in many deep mines.
